Message from the President and Executive Director Reflecting back on 2018, one theme that seemed to stand out was how, together, we grew our reach and deepened our roots, resulting in significant impacts for kidney patients across BC and the Yukon. We exist to support kidney patients and, in 2018, this support reached new levels. The annual report reflects our collective accomplishments, and we note a few highlights below.

In 2018, we were proud to able to provide $80,000 in emergency support to kidney patients through our Short Term Financial Assistance Program—a program that is completely unique to The Kidney Foundation. We also reached and screened over 1000 at-risk individuals through our Targeted Screening program in 25 communities. At the same time, we continued to send children with kidney disease for a week of fun at Kidney Kids Camp; we matched potential kidney donors with mentors to support them on their organ donation journey; housed 45 kidney transplant recipients in our 7 kidney suites, and supported thousands of kidney patients with information through our manuals and materials—and the list continues. In addition, last year, we responded to over 500 phone calls and emails from kidney patients and their families, providing important information, and access to resources. And while we cannot give medical advice, our staff listen and whenever possible, they use their skills and expertise to offer perspective on a patient’s situation.

A long-standing priority at The Kidney Foundation is our work to provide public awareness and education about kidney health and organ donation. In 2018, we continued to grow our reach in this arena too, reaching people we never thought possible through our Kidney Health TV program, PLUGGED IN, and its ever-expanding airtime on SHAW TV, including those individuals at-risk through our TV program on SHAW Multicultural. In addition, we launched our first-ever kidney e-newsletter allowing us again to reach and engage with more members of our kidney family than ever before.​ One of most meaningful accomplishments, however, was our ability to grow and deepen our roots with our volunteers. We saw evidence of this in many ways including the creation of a new Chapter in Vernon.

And while we said good-bye last May to many long-serving, dedicated Board members—who still remain connected to the organization—we also welcomed new members, new Chapter leaders and new volunteers.

We connected through conversations and deepened those connections through our work at Board meetings, Leadership Weekends, Chapter meetings and coffee meet ups. Our kidney family and supporters came out with gusto again to our Kidney Walks, to our Kidney Gala,

Over the course of 2018, we reached out and created new partnerships, but we also deepened our existing ones.

We shared new ideas, we started new initiatives, but most importantly, we grew and we deepened our passion and dedication for what we, as an organization, do.

Kidney patients, their families, volunteers, members, the renal staff community, long-term funders, donors, supporters, stakeholders, researchers and staff made all of this possible.

You are what defines us as an organization: you help give kidney patients a voice, you help give kidney patients and their families hope for a better future, and at the same time you are there to help provide kidney patients with invaluable comfort and support each and every day.

For all of your unwavering dedication, hard work, advice and guidance, thank you.

Saving Lives Through Organ Donation Organ donation and kidney transplantation saves lives.

With over 80% of all organ transplants being kidneys, The Kidney Foundation of Canada and its volunteers continue to support the work of BC Transplant, and increase organ donation and transplantation through our Saving Lives Through Organ Donation Campaign.

Mayors and Council Members Continue to Show their Support for Organ Donation In 2016, Mayors and Council Members passed a motion at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention to increase their efforts to encourage organ donor registration. This motion was a result of a resolution put forth by the BC & Yukon Branch and submitted to the City of Kamloops and Township of Langley. Since then,Mayors have been active in supporting organ donation by participating and speaking at the Kidney Walks, talking about the importance of organ donation on PLUGGED IN and actively engaging on social media. In 2018, Mayors across BC stepped up once again, with many working with the BC & Yukon Branch to send out a joint press release encouraging residents in their local community to register their wishes for organ donation.

Saving Lives Through Organ Donation

Transplant Recipients Zumba for Organ Donor Awareness The BC & Yukon Branch teamed up with BC Transplant to host a special event in downtown Vancouver during National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week (April 22-29) to promote organ donor awareness and registration. Kidney patients, transplant recipients, kidney donors and volunteers shared their stories and encouraged the public to register their wishes.

Double-lung recipient, Margaret Benson, led two Zumba demonstrations to show how transplants really do save lives, and participants and the public danced along with her. TV, radio and print turned up to cover the event and help us spread our messages to the public-at-large.

The public registration drive coincided with the national LightUpGreen initiative which saw buildings and landmarks across Canada lighting up green on the evening of April 25.

WHL Reaches Thousands of Fans with Organ Donation Message Western Hockey League (WHL) fans embraced the RE/MAX Presents: WHL Suits Up with Don Cherry to Promote Organ Donation-themed events at 17 games during October 2017 to March 2018. Fans not only signed up to be organ donors, but purchased swag, including special Don Cherry suit-themed jerseys, raising a record-setting $265,000 for Western Canada in support of organ donation.

Organ donation is a cause close to Don Cherry’s family, with Don’s son, Tim, receiving a kidney transplant from his sister Cindy.

Kidney Car has Breakout Year You’ve probably heard it on TV, radio, and maybe seen the messaging as you are driving down a BC highway: Have an unwanted vehicle? Donate your car, truck or SUV!! You’ll get a FREE tow, tax receipt and the great feeling you’ve helped the environment and people living with kidney disease across Canada.

Yes, we’re talking about the ever-successful Kidney Car program, which the Kidney Foundation started 25 years ago, and is now the biggest charity-run car program in Canada, not to mention the Foundation’s biggest revenue source.

2018 broke all records at the BC & Yukon Branch with over 4,800 kidney car donors and $1.7 million raised. Don Cherry even lent his support to the cause, and to the idea that it is all about doing the right thing, recycle for the environment and for kidney patients.

The Kidney Foundation presents Financial Burden of Kidney Disease Survey Findings at BC Kidney Days Every year BC & Yukon Branch staff attend and participate in BC Kidney Days, hosted by BC Renal and BC Transplant.

BC Kidney Days is an education and networking forum for renal health professionals to collaborate and share best practices with a goal to deliver optimal care to kidney patients.

In addition to attending education sessions and networking events, the Branch also hosted an information booth and delivered presentations which highlighted how we support kidney patients through various programs and initiatives.

At the 2018 Kidney Days, Heather Johnson (Director of Programs at BC & Yukon Branch) and Shannon Fogarasi (Director of Programs and Public Policy at the Ontario Branch) presented highlights on the “Financial Burden of Kidney Disease”. Last year the Kidney Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Society of Nephrology of Social Workers (CANSW) partnered to administer a survey entitled the “Burden of Out-of-Pocket Costs for Canadians with Kidney Failure” and released the findings in a special report publicly earlier this year.

Over 1,200 people on dialysis from across Canada were surveyed to determine the extent and impact of financial costs related to kidney failure. This report highlights the devastating burden of kidney disease, exemplified by the fact that 20% of respondents go without food, medication and other basic necessities as they struggle to maintain their dialysis regime.

At the same time this report shines a spotlight on BC Renal, and its commitment to kidney patients which has made it a leader in kidney care across Canada.

Kidney Disease Prevention Reaches Far and Wide Across BC

By October 2018, the BC and Yukon Branch successfully screened 1,027 British Columbians at-risk of developing chronic kidney disease at 29 screening events in 25 communities across BC. With funding of $200,000 from the BC Ministry of Health, our targeted screening coordinator made her way around communities across BC bringing the message about kidney health and the importance of knowing your numbers. Screening events took place in towns in Northern BC, the Interior, Vancouver Island and across the Lower Mainland. The population screened included those at higher risk for kidney disease.

A final evaluation report has been completed to inform the response to the screening and identify motivation toward positive lifestyle changes.

KEY FINDINGS • Almost 100% of the participant respondents reported having a better understanding of chronic kidney disease and its risk factors, and lifestyle modifications to reduce the risks as a result of attending a screening event.

Volunteers Make it Happen: Providing Reach and Support Each and Every Day Without a doubt, volunteers are our most valuable resource that drive our mission forward, enabling us to do what we do. We feel incredibly fortunate to have such a remarkable group of people within our kidney community—our shining stars—who help us, each and everyday, support those affected by kidney disease.

Every year the Branch honours its volunteers and supporters through an annual awards evening.

Anne Schultz received the National President’s Award for her outstanding leadership, strategic insight and contributions as President of the BC & Yukon Branch Board of Directors and for her role on the National Board of Directors.

Among her many accomplishments, Anne helped drive the “Saving Lives Through Organ Donation” campaign to a new level by creating key partnerships for the Branch including with the BC Association of Chiefs of Police and Royal Roads University.

Ron Walker was recognized with the Special Appreciation Award for his dedication, passion, guidance and contributions to The Kidney Foundation over 30 years. Ron is a force to be reckoned with locally, provincially, and nationally and we could not imagine the Foundation without him.

Maureen Hobbs took home the Community Leadership Award for her unstoppable passion and commitment. Maureen has done it all from supporting Chapter events, to spearheading an organ donation initiative through the school of nursing, to organizing the Hobbs family’s highly successful “Kidneys on the Move” event which has raised in excess of $100,000 over 10 years.

Kidney Gala Raises Serious Funds for Kidney Patients and Kidney Research Over 300 guests enjoyed a night of glitz and glam as the blue carpet was rolled out at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver for the 6th annual Kidney Gala presented by AG Hair on March 8, 2018 – World Kidney Day. The ever-elegant Gala emcee and CTV news anchor, Norma Reid, opened the evening and introduced Dr. Adeera Levin, Gala Chair, an internationally respected nephrologist/ researcher, who set the stage for the evening and why it is so important to shine a light on kidney disease. MLA for Shuswap, Greg Kyllo, brought greetings and kidney patient, Kate Chong, who spoke at our inaugural Gala, returned to share how her life has changed in so many ways, and she took the audience on an inspiring journey through her powerful story. The Agency Girls entertained guests throughout the evening singing radio hits from the golden era of Hollywood.

Kidney Walk Celebrates Another Successful Year Thanks to the amazing support and efforts of over 1,800 Kidney Walk volunteers, walkers and sponsors, the 2018 Kidney Walk raised $317,000 in 16 locations around BC and the Yukon to support kidney patients. Since the Kidney Walk first began back in 2007, our Kidney Walk Community has continued to step up and make this event a huge success—whether it’s reaching within their network to raise those critical dollars, sponsoring a local Kidney Walk, organizing silent auctions, selling children’s art, hosting beer & burger nights or bake sales, setting up tents, taking down tents—to each and everyone one of you—THANK YOU!
