FROM THE PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

was a year of many proud accomplishments.

One theme seemed to stand out: our kidney community coming together with passion and energy to speak with “one strong voice” for kidney patients.

Connecting and engaging with each other was a vital step towards our “one strong voice”. Initiatives like our Community Conversations, Patient Journeys and Kidney Summit set the stage and offered a platform for our kidney patients, volunteers, donors, and supporters to speak openly about the barriers, challenges and opportunities for kidney patients, and specifically organ donation and transplantation.

Our Saving Lives through Organ Donation campaign kicked into high gear and kidney patients and volunteers were in full force sharing their stories and advocating about the need for increased organ donor registration across BC and the Yukon. Together we took our message to the Legislature, to mayors and councils, to numerous community events, and to the media. We worked with the Yukon government

about the needs of kidney patients in the Yukon and how to make organ donor registration easier. Organizations were excited to see and embraced our new creative for the Saving Lives through Organ Donation campaign: HEROES aren’t born, they’re REGISTERED. We welcomed several new community leaders to our kidney family from across BC & Yukon, including the BC Association of Chiefs of Police, who were recognized and thanked for their amazing support of our Saving Lives through Organ Donation campaign.

We know our “one strong voice” has made a difference. We have seen success as we applauded and acknowledged the BC government’s efforts to make organ donor registration easier— a key recommendation coming out of the Foundation’s Community Conversations with British Columbians. British Columbians can now register their wishes for organ donation at Service BC Centres and ICBC driver licensing locations. And we are proud to share that the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) passed a resolution

put forth by the BC & Yukon Branch that called for local governments to support organ donation in their communities.

We broadened our reach, and our “one strong voice”, through the launch of an innovative new tv show—PLUGGED IN. Our show airs across BC on SHAW TV and puts us and everything kidney in the public eye.

We are proud of the many programs and services we provide to kidney patients to improve their quality of life—today and into the future. We are able to provide funding for innovative new research that could one day lead to a cure for kidney disease, and to give a helping hand to kidney patients in a time of need through our emergency financial assistance.

We are also proud to offer a comforting home away from home through our 7 kidney suites to help kidney patients who need to stay in Vancouver and recover after their kidney transplant surgery. We also provide a Kidney Camp for Kids, where all expenses are paid and kids just get to be kids.

These are just a few examples of how we support kidney patients, and we know it takes a community to make all this happen. We are so fortunate to have many dedicated, compassionate individuals on this journey with us. Earlier this year, however, we said goodbye to one such individual, Karen Philp, Executive Director of the The Kidney Foundation, BC & Yukon Branch when she assumed a new and exciting challenge in the great province of Alberta. We wish Karen every success, and thank her for her leadership and for helping us forge new opportunities that raised the visibility of The Kidney Foundation.

Our “one strong voice” has put kidney in the spotlight and afforded us new opportunities to advocate, educate and provide strong support to kidney patients and their families. We are excited to continue to build on our strengths and seize new opportunities in 2017.

All this, however, would not be possible without you—our kidney patients, and their families, volunteers, donors, supporters and staff. Thank you.

FOR OUR KIDNEY COMMUNITY

Leadership Weekend Makes Advocacy Training and Kidney Health Education the Focus NE HUNDRED AND FIFTY passionate kidney patients, and The Kidney Foundation volunteers, Board Directors and staff from across BC and the Yukon came together for a jam-packed Leadership Weekend on February 6 and 7 focused on advocacy training and kidney health education.

Participants left the weekend excited, energized and ready to speak with one strong voice for all kidney patients and families.

Guest speakers highlighted personal experiences and spoke about the importance of partnerships, including: Langley City Councillor Charlie Fox, MLA for Kootenay West Katrine Conroy and George Abbott, former BC Health Minister.

Keith Baldrey, Political Commentator with Global News BC and Bill Tieleman, Political Strategist, also shared their insights on the political environment.

Indigenous leaders, kidney patients and families identified barriers and well as some solutions to reduce the impact of kidney disease in Indigenous communities. Participants also learned how traditional medicines and foods might improve kidney health, and Dr. Adeera Levin, Executive Director with BC Provincial Renal Agency talked about working with the First Nations Health Authority and outlined the supports currently available.

The weekend included a Cantonese workshop for volunteers with the Chinese Renal Association Chapter—which also included a presentation from a renal dietician from St. Paul’s Hospital as well as a cooking demonstration of renal friendly, festive food for Chinese New Year.

Community Leaders Show Strong Support for Organ Donation Campaign ITH AN ESTIMATED 10% of BC’s workforce having kidney disease, community leaders have been very supportive of The Kidney Foundation’s Saving Lives through Organ Donation campaign—which has a goal to increase organ donor registration and kidney transplantation by 50% over the next 5 years. There is no cure for kidney disease, but a kidney transplant is often a patient’s best hope for their future.

A big thank you to the many organizations across BC who have shared information about the importance of organ donation, and encouraged their employees to register their wishes.

The Kidney Foundation launched their creative for its “Saving Lives Through Organ Donation” campaign with a tagline that puts those who register their wishes at the centre of the campaign:

Heroes aren’t born, they’re registered.

“Our goal is to increase organ donor registration and kidney transplantation by 50% over the next 5 years.”

The BC Association of Chiefs of Police were thanked at a press conference in June for their amazing support of the organ donation campaign, and in particular, Chief Constable Chris Rattenbury, Port Moody Police Department, who was instrumental in bringing the BC Association of Chiefs of Police on board.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that UBCM call upon all Mayors and Council Members to accept The Kidney Foundation’s challenge to Save Lives Through Organ Donation in their communities, and to work with the Foundation to increase the number of people registered as organ donors in their respective communities.

Thanks to all our Kidney Foundation volunteers who met with their local Mayor and Council, shared their stories and advocated for the need for increased organ donor registration.

The Kidney Foundation is looking forward to working with Mayors and Councils and has some exciting plans in place to promote organ donor registration for 2017.

on behalf of the BC Government invited The Kidney Foundation, BC & Yukon Branch to the legislature to participate in the first-ever Red Tape Reduction Day and share how ICBC and Service BC Centres’ adoption of the organ donor registration service has made it easier for British Columbians to register their wishes.

Premier of British Columbia invited The Kidney Foundation’s BC & Yukon Branch Executive Director to a special reception for BC Members of Parliament in February in Ottawa. With the assistance of Dr. Hedy Fry, MP for Vancouver Centre, the needs of kidney patients were discussed including more kidney transplants in our province.

The Kidney Foundation Volunteers Take One Strong Voice to BC Legislature OLUNTEERS FROM ACROSS BC met with elected officials at the BC Legislature on March 9th—during Kidney Health Month. Advocates shared their personal stories with MLAs and asked for support for increasing organ donor registration by 50% in BC.

Kidney patient advocates were welcomed and introduced during Question Period (26 times—but who’s counting?). Greg Kyllo, MLA for Shuswap and Parliamentary Secretary and Katrine Conroy, MLA Kootenay West, both made statements in honour of Kidney Health Month and World Kidney Day.

Organ Donation Advocate Takes Her Story on the Road to Make a Difference

A

T AGE 20, Amanda Poch’s liver failed and she found herself in urgent need of a lifesaving transplant. With 6 hours to spare, her life was saved through organ donation.

After celebrating her ten-year transplant anniversary, Amanda Poch wanted to give back and partnered with The Kidney Foundation to create a “Live Then Give” tour.

Through this tour Amanda would take her story on the road to communities across BC—raising organ donation awareness and registration.

On March 9th on the steps of the BC Legislature, The Kidney Foundation and volunteers joined Amanda to officially launch the tour that included a strong media presence, and several high-profile guest speakers: The Honourable Amrik Virk, Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services; John Horgan, Leader of the Official Opposition and MLA for Juan de Fuca; Greg Kyllo, MLA for Shuswap; and Katrine Conroy, MLA for Kootenay West. Two-year-old kidney patient, Hailey-Ann, marked the special occasion by presenting Amanda with an Organ Donor “Hero Cape” and a group of “Kidney Kids” (children impacted by kidney disease) honoured Amanda with a special performance.

Kidney Patients Focus of Conversation with Yukon Minister of Health

Health, met with The Kidney Foundation’s BC & Yukon Branch Executive Director in January to discuss how The Kidney Foundation might collaborate to ensure the needs of kidney patients living in the Yukon are met. A passionate supporter of organ donation, and the work of the Foundation, Minister Nixon attended several events including the Shine a Light Kidney Gala in Vancouver and the Kidney Walk in the Yukon talking about the need to promote organ donor awareness.

for children impacted by kidney disease to come together and through sharing their stories and special dance performances, help increase kidney health awareness—and the fact that kidney disease can affect anyone at any age.

The Kidney Kids debut performance took place during Kidney Health Month, which was supported by the theme: “Let’s Take the Kid Out of Kidney Disease.”

PARTNERS IN ACTION: MAKING IT COUNT FOR KIDNEY PATIENTS The Kidney Foundation Selected as London Drugs’ Charity of Choice

The Kidney Foundation Applauds BC Government’s Organ Donation Pilot

T

he Kidney Foundation strongly supported the BC government’s efforts to make organ donor registration easier for British Columbians: a key recommendation coming out of the Foundation’s community conversations with British Columbians. In 2015, the BC Government made it possible for British Columbians to register their wishes for organ donation at all 62 Service BC Centres. Last March the BC Government launched an organ donation pilot program in partnership with ICBC and BC Transplant.

ICBC employees at 4 driver licensing locations provided customers with the opportunity to register their wishes for organ donation.

idney was front and centre in 51 London Drugs stores across BC last September thanks to the store’s “at the till” promotion which raised funds for the Foundation through the sale of wristbands and promoted kidney health awareness. This first time in-store campaign for The Kidney Foundation showed impressive results, so watch for us— The Kidney Foundation has been invited back as London Drugs’ charity of choice next year during the month of October.

Family Raises Funds & Kidney Health Awareness within the Indigenous Community

M

arissa Nahanee got a second chance at life after she received a life-saving kidney from her mother, Delhia.

Wanting to inspire and help other indigenous people living with kidney disease—a population at high risk for the disease—the Nahanee family partnered with The Kidney Foundation to host the Inspiration of Hope Gala on September 24 in North Vancouver.

The Gala not only raised funds for kidney patients, it also increased awareness of kidney disease within the indigenous community.

Jua Hua Chinese Opera Captivates Audiences & Raises Significant Funds for Kidney Patients

S

ince 2012, the Jua Hua Chinese Opera has raised an amazing $52,000 plus for kidney patients. Organized by Patricia Leung, Peritoneal Dialysis Nurse at Vancouver General Hospital, along with members of the Jua Hua Chinese Opera and hundreds of volunteers, this annual event is a unique and stunning musical featuring a wide variety of Chinese performances including Tai Chi displays by Master Liu Yan and his students.

Kidney Gala Shines a Light on Kidney Patients and Kidney Research

C

o-Chairs Dr. Adeera Levin and Dr. John Gill, steered this year’s Shine a Light Kidney Gala on March 3rd to a new record, raising $230,000 for kidney patients and kidney research. Over 300 guests joined the elegant cocktail party presented by AG Hair. Joining the Gala Co-Chairs was MC Norma Reid, CTV news anchor, and celebrity columnist Fred Lee. The Honourable Terry Lake, Minister of Health and The Honourable Mike Nixon, Yukon Minister of Health delivered opening remarks. Minister Nixon also presented The Kidney Foundation with a $5,000 cheque to support kidney patients in the Yukon.
