ast week I had a moment. I was preparing for my interview with Nicole Livingstone about MOOV head lice treatments (see page 16) when I said to my husband “I never ever would have thought that I would be interviewing a former Olympian about head lice!” It’s funny where life takes you.

I also never would have thought that in six months we would have taken our little website and turned it into a magazine seen by over 60,000 people in the first issue alone. Life does take you down some interesting paths and I hope 2013 brings me many more opportunities to challenge myself and grow Kid Magazine.

MAKING THE MOST OF THE END OF SEASON SALES 1. If you want to stock up on some sale items for the kids for next Summer think classic cuts and basic items such as plain singlet tops, t-shirts, shorts and hats. Avoid impulse purchases for anything that is a seasonal trend as it is likely next Summer it won’t be in fashion and the kids won’t wear it. 2. If you are on an online shopper, set yourself a time limit for your sales shopping and stick to it. The number of online kids boutiques is constantly growing and you could spend hours moving from online store to online store. Once you set your time limit, start with your favourite boutiques first and gradually move through your list. I have a separate email account for newsletter subscriptions for my favourite stores so that I can check it regularly without it cluttering my regular mailbox.

3. If you have friends living in other parts of the World with birthdays in the next few months, start thinking about birthday gifts for the kids. You can easily send lightweight Summer clothing via post.. Look out for Australian labels to showcase our amazing designers!

4. If you have a European Summer holiday planned for 2013 you can also use the current sales to plan the kids wardrobe for while you will be away, particularly if they are younger and moving quickly through different sizes.

WHY DON’T WE TALK ABOUT IT? The note comes home from school and panic sets in. You start to feel your own scalp itching as you carefully check your kids hair for any sign of the creepy crawly enemies of parental sanity. Whether you find any head lice or not, it is a time consuming, energy zapping exercise that you could do without. “Treating my kids head lice brings us closer together”, said no parent ever.

Interestingly, MOOV found that in Australia there are 4.5 million cases of head lice each year. That is 4.5 million moments of panic and if Wikipedia is correct and female head lice lay five eggs per day, that is a frightening number of eggs and live lice combed from hair every year. Not to mention the suffering of that persistent itch!

Given the abundance of head lice

I was shocked to read in the results of the MOOV Head Lice Survey that 57% of mums said they were not comfortable talking to their school or other parents about their kids head lice. Even more astonishing is that 48% of parents admitted to not telling their school when their child has head lice. This perpetuates the problem, as the head lice are able to spread infecting more children.

Nicole Livingstone, former Olympic swimmer, mum of three and MOOV ambassador says that while many people feel it may be a hurdle to overcome to talk about their child having head lice, it is so important in being able to break the cycle.

“If your child had measles you would put your hand straight up and say ‘my son or daughter has measles’ but it just seems to be with head lice that so many mums don’t want to tell their girlfriends or the school that their child has head lice. We talk to each other about so many different things why can’t we talk

about this?” said Nicole.

Livingstone first encountered head lice two years ago in the January school holidays when her daughter complained of an itchy head. Upon closer inspection she discovered the problem but was able to act quickly with the MOOV products and bust the lice.

With back to school just around the corner, MOOV is launching its Defend Your School program aiming to reach 150,000 primary school students nationally. The children will receive information packs with myths about head lice, educational games and quizzes and the chance to win grant and prizes for their school.

Livingstone’s advice to parents is to grab the information kit. She recalls, “When my daughter had head lice,

it caught me by surprise. It can be quite confusing to stand in the pharmacy and know which product to choose”. The MOOV kits are also a useful tool for parents, containing information on treatment and management. The MOOV website is another handy resource for understanding the myths and why head lice is nothing to be ashamed of.

We also asked Livingstone for her tips on preventing and treating head lice. She urged parents to act quickly, “If head lice come into your life don’t wait around, grab the MOOV product and get it in there to bust the cycle of the lice.”

Running is a great way to stay in shape all year round.

All you require is a good pair of running shoes, the right clothing and you can run at any time, and anywhere, in all types of weather! It’s not only good for your health, it is often a great way to release stress.

Getting outdoors in a natural environment is a great way to clear your head, give you thinking time, and you’ll be working your muscles and your cardiovascular system at the same time!

Running is also an activity that can involve your family or your partner.

Often couples that are both interested in running can train together making it ideal if you are busy, you want to exercise yet you don’t have enough time for each other as well. If your children are old enough they can ride their bike alongside you as you run. So many people are finding ways to incorporate this great activity into their day to day lives.

There is a technique to running though and in order to get the best out of this form of exercise, and to avoid injury, there are some simple observations to follow. To run efficiently you need to ensure your foot lands under the centre of gravity of your body, your arms are kept beside you and move like pistons backwards and forwards, your

posture should be upright, shoulders not hunched and you are taking small steps. Ideally, striking your foot to the ground with your mid sole will reduce the impact throughout your body.

Your legs should kick up at the back as you pull away from the ground, propelling yourself forward. By taking smaller steps you will conserve energy and reduce the impact on your hips and pelvis.

Making sure you have fuel on board is important so eat before and after you run, and always hydrate well By gradually increasing the time you run for or the distances you run, you will become less puffed and able to run for longer. Running for longer distances does need to be respected though. By starting slowly and building up your distance and time, your body will become accustomed to the movement of running and gradually your fitness will increase, and less risk of injury occurs.

The right shoes and clothing are also critically important. Shoes should be specifically designed for running and cater to whether you roll in, out or are

a neutral foot. Having the wrong shoes will impact the muscles groups you use for running. Wearing clothing that wicks away the sweat, such as 100% polyester, will keep your core body temperature down.

1. For those readers that don’t know who you are, tell us about the man behind the brand?

When I completed my schooling I had no idea what I wanted for a career. My first full time position was working at a local irrigation firm selling pipe and fittings to the trade and public. From there I ventured into the finance industry were I have worked in a number of areas.

Founder, David Pearson, answered a few of our questions about the Fitskin brand and the beauty industry. He also shared his five skincare tips you won’t want to miss

I am a family man with four children of varying ages so, there are interesting times. I enjoy watching live sport especially Australian Rules, Ruby League and most competitive sports.

Generally I keep myself reasonably fit and just started yoga to work on my core and flexibility. I love to eat out with family and friends - a great way to catch up especially when times are busy - we all need to stop and eat.

2. How was the Fitskin brand conceived?

We released David Maxwell skin care for men back in February 2010 after extensive research and development over a number of years. Our male offering is for the man who takes pride in his appearance with our anti ageing formulations.

Part of our strategic direction was to release a female range of skincare into the market within three years of David Maxwell being launched. An enormous amount of R&D was conducted. There are new ingredients that appear on the market everyday and we wanted to explore their capabilities and performance.

5. How do you think the health and beauty industry has changed in the last decade?

Focusing on skincare, there are more products on the market with celebrity endorsements and Botox has become a favourite for people who want a quick fix. The biggest change in the market is the growth in male grooming products, especially in anti ageing skincare products.

The delivery of products to consumers has changed dramatically through shopping websites and quick delivery of products. The consumer is savvier in what they purchase and they demand quality products that have quality active ingredients that improve their appearance through a cosmetic approach.

Flying advice for mums to be hours, travel is often not permitted after the end of the 38th week (single pregnancy). Restrictions can change if you’re having a multiple pregnancy • If you are 28 weeks or more, often airlines will ask you to present a letter from your midwife or doctor. This must be dated no more than 10 days prior to travel and outline your estimated due date, the absence of complications, single or multiple pregnancies, and their consent for you to fly for the duration of the flight(s) booked

IIf you are pregnant and planning to travel you will want to read these tips from travel.com.au General Manager Renee Walsh. A mum of two and seasoned traveller herself, she is well accustomed to flying with a bump. “Flying is possible while pregnant. You just need to know when you can go and how to look after both yourself and the baby while up in the air. I’d encourage all pregnant mums to read thoroughly and talk to other women who have done it before. A little tip here and there can make life a lot easier,” said Renee.

• As long as you haven’t experienced any complications, the safest time to fly when pregnant is during the second trimester. By this time, first trimester morning sickness is likely to have subsided, energy levels are higher and the risk of going into labour is low. Some women won’t have this luxury and may need to fly interstate regularly. If you suffer from morning sickness, make sure you have a bottle of water, some snacks and sick bags close to hand • If you can avoid it, it is not advisable to fly during your first trimester as the risk of a miscarriage is still high. Equally, it is not advised to fly throughout your third trimester as the possibility of going into labour increases and you ideally don’t want to be having the baby while in the air!

Commercial planes are fine however flying on smaller planes, non-pressurised planes, is not recommended at any stage of your pregnancy as the lower oxygen levels may impact your baby • If you are required to fly during the third trimester, be aware that airlines have some restrictions in place. Depending on how far into your pregnancy you are and what airline you choose to travel with, you may not be able to fly at all.

For example, the majority of airlines won’t allow pregnant women (single pregnancy) to fly on a flight over four hours if they past the end of their 36th week. For flights under four

• Requirement and restrictions can change from carrier to carrier and from time to time so it’s best to always check with the airline before planning a holiday or purchasing your ticket. If you have any queries, call your carrier to clarify - it’s better to be sure. Wear your seat belt low and around the pelvis so to reduce pressure on the baby • Pregnant women are infamous bathroom goers.

To make getting up to go to the toilet easier, book or request an aisle seat. If possible, request a seat with more leg room – or better still, pay that bit extra and book a premium economy or business class ticket • During pregnancy, your circulation is already under strain and the lower cabin pressure won’t help this. So it’s important to wear in-flight DVT socks and flexible shoes, as well as regularly stretch your limbs and do exercises in your chair and remain well hydrated (sip water throughout the flight. It is also worthwhile taking some small snacks (biscuits etc.) in case you get peckish. Unless going to the bathroom, try to remain seated as much as possible as you may lose your balance walking up and down the aisle, particularly if the plane goes through a sudden bout of turbulence • When flying overseas, be sure to check your travel insurance thoroughly. Worried about your child getting a good night’s sleep when school starts? You’re not alone, and it’s no wonder. A startling 40 percent of children have trouble sleeping within the first six months of starting primary school - sleep problems that affect their mental health, as well as the mental health of their parents.

This is a serious health issue for children and families, and it’s been a particular area of recent academic research by the Murdock Children’s Research Institute. They found that children with sleep problems were associated with poorer child and parent mental health which can hinder the child’s ability to make a successful transition to school.

But perhaps this shouldn’t be surprising. Children, like adults, can find significant life events to be stressful.

Starting school, or even changing grades, is likely to be as stressful for children as starting a new job can be for adults. And on top of this, in Australia the school year starts after children’s normal, healthy sleep routines are likely to have been disrupted with all the activity of Christmas, holidays, and travel.

There are a range of strategies parents can try to help their children get a good night’s sleep, but one of the most effective is the use of guided relaxation techniques.

Recent medical research has shown that relaxation techniques, paired with calming bedtime routines, are more effective in the long term than sleep medication for children without physical health issues. Plus, using guided relaxation as part of a child’s bedtime routine is simple and natural (and even fun).

A lot of inspiration with little liberty A child’s bedroom is the place where dreams happen. It is the one place in the home where a child can feel ownership of everything in that room and be proud of it. Occupational Therapist turned Interior Designer Nicole Rosenberg knows this only too well and so launched her business Little Liberty to create rooms for all ages that are unique, practical, fun and always reflect each child’s individuality and desires.

Even as a teenager, her talent with interior design was evident. Rosenberg recalls, “When I was about 15 I spent all of my money on three very expensive pillows from David Jones for my new double bed just because I was so in love with the colours in the pillows”. It wasn’t until she had her own children, Ruby (8), Millie (6) and Archie (3) that she became obsessed with all things

décor. After decorating her girls’ rooms in their new home, friends began asking Rosenberg to style their children’s rooms. And so began the Little Liberty journey.

Despite each room she creates having its own unique look and personality, Rosenberg’s signature is clearly evident, displaying clean lines, bright, bold pops of colour and an impeccable sense of style and taste. Take the room Rosenberg recently created for her own daughter Ruby. Starting with a monochromatic background of black, grey and white she then incorporated yellow, a favourite colour of Ruby’s.

Rosenberg also believes that a beautiful room gives a child their own space and teaches them to respect their belongings and be accountable for their mess. Rosenberg always meets with the parents and children before decorating the room so she can get a good idea of what they are looking for. She is proud that the personality of her client has been displayed loud and clear in every room she has created.

After meeting with young Dylan, Rosenberg walked away with the mandate of including world maps, Lego and dinosaurs to feature in his room and this is exactly what she did.

When asked about her favourite creations Rosenberg hesitates to name one but says, “I love the room I just created for a little baby girl which has really natural earthy tones in it and is a real departure from the usual baby nurseries centred around either pink or blue.” Other Little Liberty nursery creations feature similar neutral bases with green or pink accents.

If you are thinking about a bedroom makeover for your little one this year, Rosenberg says that the hot trends are brights and fluro. She also gave the tip that you can find some fabulous pieces for kids rooms at replica furniture stores.

And what does she enjoy most about her job? “That’s easy - the kids faces when they open their door to their new rooms - it’s an amazing feeling and I get goose bumps every time!”

I am a very focused person. I set myself goals with the intention of achieving them. Despite the occasional reset along the way when life gets in the way I do always achieve what I set out to.

However, there is a strange phenomenon that affects me all but once a year. That fateful first day of every year when my goal setting ability is impeded by the excitement of the 12 months of newness ahead of me. The dreaded New Year’s resolution.

Sticky Date Cheesecake Slice

with caramel fudge sauce Serves 8 Preparation time 25 minutes Cooking time 30 minutes

Ingredients 100g butternut snap biscuits, crushed 20g butter, melted 375g PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened 1/3 cup caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 egg 2 table spoons of plain flour 5 (125g) fresh dates, chopped 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed 80g butter, extra 1/3 cup cream Cream, extra to serve

Method 1. COMBINE the biscuit crumbs and butter in a bowl. Press mixture into the base of a greased and lined 9cm × 20cm loaf pan. Chill.

2. BEAT the PHILLY, sugar and vanilla with an electric mixer until smooth. Beat in the egg then stir through the flour and dates. Pour filling into prepared base and bake in a moderately slow oven 160ºC for 25 minutes or until just set. Cool in the oven with door ajar. Chill.

3. COMBINE brown sugar, extra butter and cream in a small saucepan, stirring over a low heat 5 minutes until thickened. Cut the cheesecake into thick slices and place on serving plates with a drizzle of sauce and a dollop of cream. Serve immediately.

Corn Relish Dip

Savoury Fritters

1 cup cream cheese 1 small jar of corn relish

1 pkt 2 minute chicken noodles 4 free range eggs, lightly beaten 2 shallots, finely chopped 2 rashers rindless bacon, chopped and lightly fried

MAKES 1 CUP

Beat cheese until smooth, add corn relish.

Sandwich Rollups MAKES 12

4 slices bread (seed or wholemeal if you can) 1 tablespoon butter Sandwich fillings; ham, cheese, pastrami, spreads 1 bunch of chives Remove the crusts from the bread. Lay each slice onto a clean, flat surface and with a rolling pin, roll out until each slice is quite thin. Butter lightly and top each with your chosen filling(s). Roll tightly, cut into thirds and tie with a chive. A good lunch box should provide your children with enough energy to sustain them all afternoon. Use fillings rich in protein; chicken, cheese, ham and tuna and loaded with vitamins and minerals; green leaf ettuce leaves, grated carrot and finely sliced cucumber. Cook noodles (without flavouring) then drain.

Combine noodles with flavour sachet, eggs, shallots and bacon. Place egg rings in a non-stick frying pan and spoon enough mixture to fill the ring, cook on both sides until golden.

Caramel Choc Truf fles MAKES 30

400g can caramel top ‘n’ fill 2 tbs. butter 250g plain chocolate biscuits, crushed 3⁄4 cup desiccated coconut Combine caramel and butter in a pan, bring to boil stirring, remove from heat. Add biscuit crumbs and mix well. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Roll heaped teaspoons of mixture into balls, coat in coconut, chill until firm.

Traffic Light Vegetable Cheesy Cornbread Cornbread is easy to make and you do not have to wait for it to rise. This scrummy recipe has red, yellow and green traffic light coloured vegetables on top, finished with some tasty grated cheese and baked in the oven until roasted and crispy. Try it as a snack on its own or dunked into soup.

You will need a Le Creuset Junior 13cm square dish, 1.5L mixing bowl and mini silicone spatula.

INGREDIENTS Vegetables ½ small red pepper 3 tablespoons sweetcorn kernels - frozen or canned 1/3 small/medium sized courgette Cornbread 2 tablespoons softened butter 100ml (3½ fl oz) buttermilk ½ beaten egg 85g (3oz) fine stone ground yellow cornmeal or maize meal ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda ½ teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons grated cheddar cheese Extra things you will need Measuring spoons, brush, scales, round blade knife, chopping board, small bowl, small mug or cup, small jug, oven gloves and a timer.

Ask a grown up helper with areas marked with a star* METHOD Oven: 190°C / 375°F / Gas Mark 5, pre-heated* Fan oven: 170°

1. Chop the red pepper and courgette into small chunks.* Place the vegetables into a small bowl and mix together with the sweetcorn.

2. Measure the butter into a small mug or cup and melt in a pan or in the microwave.* 3. Using the silicone brush paint the inside of the dish generously with some of the melted butter.

4. Measure the buttermilk into the jug, stir in the beaten egg and the rest of the melted butter.

5. Weigh the cornmeal into the mixing bowl and add the bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and salt.

6. Pour in the milky mixture from the jug and mix everything together.

7. Pour the cornbread mix into the buttered dish and smooth over the top with the spatula.

8. Spread the vegetables evenly over the top and sprinkle on the grated cheese.

9. Put the dish into the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until the bread has risen and the top is nicely golden.* 10. Once cooked allow to cool for a few minutes before cutting into squares or fingers. kidmagazine.com.au 52

Chicken Salad PureBred Seeded Wholegrain Sandwich Roll 2 breasts of chicken cooked 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 cup aioli 1 tablespoon Whole-Grain Dijon Mustard 1/3 cup roasted, salted almonds, coarsely chopped 1/4 cup dried cherries, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup small-dice celery 2 tablespoons finely chopped shallot 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme Iceberg lettuce Dice chicken and place in a large bowl. Add the mayonnaise, mustard, almonds, cherries, celery, shallot, and thyme and season with salt and pepper. Stir to evenly combine. Spoon chicken salad mixture into PureBred Seeded Wholegrain Sandwich Roll and top with lettuce.

We are so excited at Kid Magazine to be partnering with Busy Kitchen Mum Blogger, Taneesha Phelps. We love Taneesha’s recipes and how easy they are for anyone to follow.

They look so tasty too! Taneesha will be a regular contributor for Kid Magazine so we asked her a few questions so you could get to know her better.

What daily rituals must you do to feel normal?

I don’t really have any daily rituals or any real concrete routine. I’m pretty easy going and generally take things as they come. Although every night my son and I have a sweet little goodnight ritual and he won’t go to sleep until it’s done.

What’s your mantra/personal philosophy?

I think Dr Suess said it best, ‘Today you are you that is truer than true.

There is no one alive more youer than you’. In other words, always be yourself.

Who inspires you?

In the kitchen I am inspired by Jamie Oliver, a man changing the lives of millions with healthy eating and education, and Nigella Lawson, a woman who isn’t afraid to gorge on deliciously rich food.

What always puts you in a good mood?

Singing in my car always puts me in a good mood. It helps me relax and unwind on my way home at the end of a long day. Baking cupcakes is always guaranteed to put me in a good mood too and nothing can make me smile more than hearing my son laugh.

How would you describe your style?

My day to day style is pretty casual. I don’t have a lot of time to get ready in the morning so I generally live in jeans and t-shirts. But I do love the Rockabilly style and own a few rockabilly dresses that I like to break out for special occasions complete with retro hair and makeup.

What would we find inside your handbag?

Probably not a lot compared to most women. I always have my phone and my purse wherever I go. I also carry paw paw ointment because that stuff fixes practically anything, headphones; for music on the go, tissues; for little goobey noses, spare hair ties, usually a bottle of water and occasionally some mentos.

What do you and your son like to do together?

During summer we love to go to the beach together. We explore the shallow water for little creatures and interesting shells and then we sit in

a little interest on the side. When I started telling people about it, I would usually get a response like ‘Oh I can’t cook’. I never understood that. A recipe is essentially step by step instructions. I then made it my mission to blog about simple, quick and delicious meals, to prove anyone can do it.

Do you have a favourite kitchen appliance you can’t live without?

It has to be a tie between my two newest appliances; a multiprocessor and stand mixer.

The multiprocessor makes it so much easier to quickly grate veggies for hiding in dinner.

But the stand mixer means no more dead arm from holding an electric beater.

What is your favourite cuisine to cook?

It changes all the time. I go through phases where I love to cook Italian or Chinese (BTW I could live on pasta and dumplings alone) but one of my favourites is Mexican and I am on the hunt for an authentic chilli con carne recipe so if you have happen to have one be sure to let me know.

What is your favourite meal?

It’s hard to pick just one. I think my absolute favourite is lamb roast with all the trimmings. I am also a massive fan of toasted sandwiches. Two crunchy buttered toasted pieces of

How did you learn to cook?

My mum who also happens to be a pretty good cook herself taught me most of what I know. I still go to her now when I’m unsure of something or if I want some ideas. She is my biggest fan.

Do your kids like getting involved in the kitchen?

He loves to help me cook. Ever since he could crawl he would find his way into the kitchen while I was cooking. Now he has a little step that he gets out when he wants to help.

He is particularly good at licking the bowl and the egg beaters. Plus he is a fantastic little taste tester, and an honest one at that.

How were you inspired to start Busy Kitchen Mum? I have always loved food and cooking.

What has been your proudest moment since starting Busy Kitchen Mum? I have had lots of proud moments since starting Busy Kitchen Mum. The blog itself, I am really proud of. It is growing into something I never thought possible.

I also once had a recipe featured on a very popular Australian blog, The Organised Housewife. I was so excited when I saw it.

How do you balance your life as a blogger, woman, mother, and friend?

It can be really tough and takes alot of hardwork, organisation, and support from loved ones and of course alot of love. You need to love what you do to make all the sacrifices and hard work worth it.

What plans do you have for the future of Busy Kitchen Mum? I hope that Busy Kitchen Mum continues to grow and gain more exposure and popularity. I love sharing the things I love to cook and I love knowing there are people out there cooking and enjoying those recipes. I’m also hoping over the next 12 months to begin selling home baked treats and maybe some crafts at local markets in my area.
