Kiddos Publisher’s Notes A Season of Gratitude, Family & Giving
PUBLISHER/ EDITOR Veronica Lepere
Dear Kiddos Families, As we welcome the beautiful fall season and prepare to gather around our Thanksgiving tables, this time of year always reminds us of what matters most—family, gratitude, kindness, and the connections we share with one another. Thanksgiving gives us a special opportunity to slow down and appreciate the little things that can sometimes get lost in our busy everyday lives: a meal shared together, laughter around the table, traditions passed from one generation to the next, and simply having a place where we feel loved and that we belong. This November, we also recognize National Adoption Month, a meaningful time to bring awareness to children and families whose journeys may look a little different, but whose need for love, stability, and connection is universal. In this issue, we are honored to shine a light on Citrus Family Care Network and the important work they do supporting children and families in our South Florida community. Our main feature Opening Hearts, Building Forever Families explores foster care and adoption and reminds us that family can be created in many beautiful ways—and that opening our hearts, our homes, or simply offering support can make a meaningful difference in a child’s life. As parents, we have an incredible opportunity to teach our kiddos that gratitude is not only about being thankful for what we have. It is also about giving back, showing compassion, including others, and finding ways—big or small— to make our community a little brighter. Our feature “Beyond the Turkey: 10 Thanksgiving Traditions Kids Will Remember” celebrates the simple moments and family traditions our kiddos can treasure for years to come. Throughout this Fall Issue, you’ll also find plenty of inspiration to enjoy the season together, from family activities and local happenings to Halloween and Thanksgiving ideas, health tips, parenting resources, destinations, and more. As I reflect on this season, I am especially grateful for you—our Kiddos families, partners, contributors, and community. Thank you for continuing to welcome Kiddos Magazine into your homes and for being part of our journey year after year. Happy Thanksgiving!

Opening Hearts, Building Forever Families Understanding Foster Care and Adoption During National Adoption Month
E
very child deserves to feel safe, supported, and loved. During National Adoption Month this November, families have an opportunity to learn more about adoption, foster care and the meaningful role our community can play in helping children find stability and a sense of belonging. In South Florida, Citrus Family Care Network (Citrus FCN) oversees the child welfare system of care in MiamiDade and Monroe Counties, including
foster parent recruitment and licensing, foster care placement, adoption and other services designed to protect children and strengthen families. Foster Care: Providing Safety During a Time of Change Foster parents can make an extraordinary difference during a challenging chapter in a child's life. Foster care provides children with a safe, nurturing and stable home while their families work toward reunification whenever possible. The goal is not simply to provide a place to stay. Foster parents offer children consistency, encouragement and everyday family experiences while supporting their well-being during a period of uncertainty. Citrus FCN says hundreds of children in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties need homes where they can feel safe, protected and loved.
8 kiddos | October • November 2026
Reunification with a child's birth family remains an important priority within the child welfare system. When circumstances prevent reunification and parental rights have been relinquished, however, a child may become eligible for adoption. Adoption: Creating a Forever Family Adoption is much more than a legal process. It is about creating lasting family connections and providing a child with the security of a permanent home. Children awaiting adoption don't all have the same story or needs. They may include teenagers, brothers and sisters who hope to remain together, and children who require specialized care and support. What they share is a need for committed families prepared to provide stability, understanding and love. And there isn't just one type of family that can consider adoption.
More Than a Home For children experiencing foster care, the everyday moments many families take for granted can have tremendous meaning. A consistent routine, sharing dinner together, having someone attend a school activity, celebrating a birthday or simply knowing that a caring adult will be there tomorrow can help provide a sense of stability during an uncertain time. Foster and adoptive parenting also means understanding that every child arrives with a unique story. Children may be adjusting to significant changes, maintaining important connections with siblings or relatives, or learning how to feel secure in a new environment. Patience, compassion and consistency can be just as important as providing a comfortable home. According to Citrus FCN, prospective adoptive parents can come from many different backgrounds. They may be married or single, already have children or have no previous parenting experience, and rent or own their homes. The ability to provide a child's basic needs, love and a lifelong commitment is central to the journey.
to help. Citrus FCN also identifies opportunities for community members to contribute through volunteering, collection drives, activities, mentoring, and other forms of support. Every Child Deserves a Place to Belong National Adoption Month is an opportunity to celebrate families formed through adoption, but it is also a time to listen, learn and better understand the experiences of children and families involved in foster care. Whether your family feels called to foster, is considering adoption, or simply wants to support children and caregivers in the community, becoming informed can be the beginning of making a meaningful difference.
Could Your Family Make a Difference? For parents who have thought about fostering or adoption but aren't sure where to begin, learning more is the first step.
Because sometimes changing a child's life begins with something very simple: opening our hearts to the possibility of being there when a child needs us most.
Keeping Siblings Connected For some children, the journey through foster care is shared with a brother or sister. Citrus Family Care Network notes that children awaiting adoption can include sibling groups who hope to remain together, making families willing and able to welcome siblings especially meaningful. Keeping those important relationships intact can give children continuity and connection as other parts of their lives are changing. For prospective parents, learning about the needs of sibling groups is another important part of understanding the many different ways families can be formed through adoption. k
Learn More Families interested in fostering or adopting can learn more visiting www.citrusfcn.com or call 305.455.6000.
Prospective foster parents must be Florida residents age 21 or older, demonstrate financial stability and adequate room in their home, complete required background checks and training, and participate in an in-depth home study. For families interested in adoption, Citrus FCN outlines a process that begins by making contact with the agency, followed by an orientation for prospective foster and adoptive parents and required training. Opening your home is a significant decision, and it isn't the only way

director of Miami Children’s Museum. “As a Certified Autism Center, it is our promise to every family who walks through our doors that they will be seen, understood and welcomed exactly as they are.” Beyond the certification, the museum continues to offer programs specifically designed to make visits more comfortable and enjoyable for families with children with disabilities. On the second Saturday of every month, Miami Children’s Museum hosts Sensory Friendly Saturday, offering a sensory-modified and supportive museum experience with limited admission, lowered sound and lighting, sensory-friendly stage performances and a variety of sensory-based activities.
The program gives children an opportunity to explore, play, and learn at their own pace while also providing families with a welcoming space to connect with one another. Halloween Safety Tips for Kids & Parents
alloween is all about costumes, candy, and making fun memories! Before your little ghosts and goblins head out for the night, a few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe while enjoying the festivities.
Be Seen: Add reflective tape, glow sticks, or small lights to costumes and trick-or-treat bags, especially when walking after dark. Choose Costumes Carefully: Make sure costumes fit properly to help prevent trips and falls. Face paint can also be a safer alternative to masks that may limit a child’s vision. Stay Together: Young children should always trick-or-treat with a trusted adult. Older kids going with friends should have a planned route, stay together, and know when to check in. Walk Smart: Use sidewalks whenever possible, cross designated crosswalks, and remind children to look both ways before crossing the street. Avoid running between parked cars.
14 kiddos | October • November 2026
Check out the Treats: Before kids dig into their candy, parents should check out treats and discard anything that is open, damaged, or looks unusual. Be especially mindful of food allergies. Light Up the Night: Carry a flashlight or use glow accessories so children can see—and be seen—more easily. With a little preparation and plenty of supervision, families can focus on what Halloween is really about: having fun, collecting treats, and creating spooktacular memories together! k

7 Smart Ways to Assign Chores Written By: Abby Watts - Family First
What This Builds: Responsibility Let chores teach natural consequences. This means you might have to bite your tongue and let them make a misstep, but that’s exactly where the lesson is.
4
M
ost days, my sister and I would come home from school to see a list of chores on the counter. We weren’t the best housekeepers. On more than one occasion, we ran the vacuum cleaner without turning it on just to get the track marks on the carpet. Think we fooled our mom? (We didn’t.) She kept giving us chores anyway. Looking back, I realize she wasn’t just trying to keep the house clean. She was teaching us responsibility, perseverance, and how to do our part. Knowing your kids should do chores is the easy part. Knowing how to delegate chores in the household so they actually get done is where it gets tricky. Here are 7 smart ways to assign chores, plus what your child will pick up besides those dirty clothes.
1
Let the kids divide up the chores themselves. “The wastebaskets need to be emptied, the lawn needs to be mowed, and the dishwasher needs to be unloaded. You guys decide how to divvy these up. ” My friend said she gave that order and listened as her three kids
16 kiddos | October • November 2026
Post a chore chart that’s visible to everyone. Some days, everyone in my house goes in separate directions like we’re a bunch of roommates. I appreciate a family chore chart because it’s like a team roster or a visual reminder that everyone is needed to make the household function. That creates family loyalty and a sense of belonging.
decided who would do what. They compromised, negotiated a little, and got the work done. What This Builds: Cooperation Kids can discuss each other’s strengths and interests and learn how different personalities help contribute to a job well done.
2
Create specialists. When your kids are old enough, give out titles that make them specialists. The “Trash Specialist” is responsible for taking out the trash, pulling the cans to and from the curb, and adding bags to the grocery list when you run low. It’s his job from start to finish. What This Builds: Accountability Empower your child to manage a job himself. Once he gets it down pat, you’ll have one less thing to worry about!
3
Stay hands-off with low-risk chores. My kids started doing their own laundry this year. That means they’ll have wrinkled shirts if they leave the load in the dryer for 12 hours. If they put the chore off for a week, it’ll be more like three loads instead of one small manageable one.
What This Builds: A Sense of Belonging When the chore chart has all the boxes checked, celebrate! Each person has played a role and contributed to the win.
5
Set clear expectations. I’m learning the hard way that my definition of a picked-up room differs from my 10-year-old son’s. I want the bookshelf to be tidy and the floor under the dresser to be all clear. He thinks putting clothes in the hamper is good enough. I have to communicate what “picked up” means, so he can feel he can do the job well. What This Builds: Confidence Setting clear expectations is one of the most important parts of knowing how to delegate chores in the household. No one wants to work toward unclear goals, and not being specific only creates frustrated kids who question if they’re capable.
6
Occasionally assign grunt work. My kids still whine about the time I made them scrub the baseboards. One says, “We had to get on our hands and knees!” The other chimes in with “Yeah! Around the whole house!” as if he’s corroborating his brother’s traumatic story. But in the subtext of the whine, I
note a little glimmer of pride that they accomplished a task that is universally undesirable. What This Builds: Work Ethic The occasional challenging or icky chore goes a long way. Acknowledge the effort it took. It shows kids they have it in them to do something hard.
7
Give a window of time. While it’s nice if chores get done on your timeline, you might find that giving your kids some wiggle room will help them approach chores more eagerly. I often write a list for my sons and say, “All of these need to be done in three hours. You can do them now or wait. It’s up to you.” What This Builds: Self-Management Give your children autonomy over when and how they get their chores done. Allowing them to manage their own time and tasks is a gift that will benefit them well into the future.
One Last Thing About That Chore List I thought the chore list on the counter was a universal mom thing. It’s not. In a survey of 1,000 adults, 82 percent said they had regular chores growing up, but only 28 percent require their own kids to do them. Figuring out how to delegate chores in the household might be the most underrated parenting move there is. They worked on me. Eventually. And they will be on my kids (and yours) too. Eventually. What is your best tip for assigning chores so they’ll benefit your kids? k Family First is a non-profit organization that provides parenting, marriage, and relationship resources through All Pro Dad, IMom and Family Minute programs, that help people love their family well, and gives them greater hope for the future. memories
The traditions we repeat today become the memories our children carry with them tomorrow.
T
hanksgiving memories are often made up of the small things. The smell of everything cooking. Family gathering throughout the house. A favorite dish that only appears on the table once a year. The time spent together after dinner. The stories told. For children, these small moments often become the big memories. Traditions don’t need to be elaborate or expensive to mean something. Sometimes, all it takes is repeating something year after year until it naturally becomes part of your family’s story. Here are ten simple traditions your kids will remember long after the leftovers are gone.
1
Start a Gratitude Jar In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, have everyone write down what they’re thankful for and place it in a jar. Read them together at Thanksgiving dinner. Save a few favorites each year for a sweet snapshot of what mattered to your family at that moment in time (Think: time capsule).
2
Give Everyone a Job Let the kids be part of creating the holiday. Have your children make place cards or set the table. They can help cook, decorate, greet guests, or choose the music. It doesn’t have to be perfect; being included is what matters and what they will remember.
3
Make the Same Special Recipe Choose one recipe that appears every Thanksgiving. Maybe it’s a family member’s stuffing, homemade pie, or cinnamon rolls. Let the kids help make it until, eventually, they know the recipe by heart and can carry the tradition on.
4
Take the Same Family Photo Choose one spot and snap a picture there every Thanksgiving. Over the years, you’ll watch little kids become big kids, hairstyles and clothing change, and your family grow. What takes a few seconds today becomes priceless later.
5
Take an After-Dinner Walk Head outside together after dinner. Walk around the neighborhood or a nearby park. It’s a chance to slow down, talk, laugh—and make a little more room for pie!
6
Make a Thanksgiving Time Capsule Ask everyone a few questions each year: What are you thankful for? What do you love right now? What made you laugh this year? Write down the answers and date them. Reading old responses can become part of a wonderful tradition.
7
Let the Kids Choose the Fun Ask the kids to choose an activity everyone does together: a board game, backyard football, charades, a movie, karaoke, or even a dance party. Sometimes the silliest traditions become favorites.
8
Remember and Honor Someone You Love Holidays can make us especially aware of the people who are no longer at the table. Make their favorite recipe, look through photographs, or tell a funny
story about them. It’s a simple way to keep family stories—and the people we love—part of our celebration.
9

Ask, “What Was Your Favorite Part?” Before Thanksgiving night ends, ask everyone what their favorite moment was. You might be surprised by the answers! Children may not remember whether the table looked perfect or dinner was served exactly on time. But they will remember laughing, helping, playing, and being surrounded by the people they love. In the end, the best traditions aren’t really about what we do. They’re about creating the feeling and warmth that our children will one day remember as home. k

How to Plan the Perfect Dinner Party Written By: The Real Food Academy
Divide your tasks into two categories: “Do Ahead” and “Finish Before Serving.” It’s a simple way to reduce last-minute kitchen chaos. Let the Food Decorate the Table Skip elaborate decorations. A beautiful platter, fresh herbs, citrus, colorful vegetables or flowers can make the table feel special without creating extra work. Let the Kids Participate Give children a job: tearing lettuce, arranging vegetables, assembling skewers, setting napkins or helping with dessert. Kids are often more curious about real food when they help prepare it.
A
memorable gathering doesn’t need an elaborate menu or hours in the kitchen. The best meals are often the simplest: fresh ingredients, dishes you can prepare ahead, and food that brings everyone around the table. At The Real Food Academy, we believe entertaining should follow the same philosophy we teach in our cooking classes: keep the food real, choose ingredients wisely, and don’t make cooking more complicated than it needs to be. Start With Better Ingredients You don’t have to change the foods your family loves to make them better. Often, you simply need to change the ingredients. Instead of bottled dressings, make a quick vinaigrette with extra-virgin olive oil, fresh lemon and herbs. Choose fresh vegetables, recognizable ingredients and minimally processed foods. When buying packaged foods, read the ingredient list—not just the claims on the front.
A good question to ask is: Could I reasonably use these ingredients in my own kitchen? Keep the Menu Simple More food doesn’t necessarily make a better party. Build your menu around protein + vegetables + quality carbohydrates + healthy fats.
At The Real Food Academy, we believe cooking is about more than making a meal. It builds confidence, independence and smarter food choices. We don’t have to change the dish, we can change the ingredients. Keep it Real at Every Meal.® k

Grilled chicken or fish, roasted vegetables, homemade pasta, quinoa, beans, avocado, fresh herbs and seasonal fruit can become an impressive meal without complicated techniques. Choose a few things and make them well. Prep Before Guests Arrive The secret to relaxed entertaining is mise en place—having everything prepared and organized before cooking begins. Wash and chop vegetables, measure ingredients, prepare sauces and dressings, set the table and make dessert ahead whenever possible. it’s just about kids | kiddosmagazine.com 31
