Carve Out More Family Time This Halloween

By the time Halloween rolls around, many families are deep into the hustle and bustle of the school year. The holiday provides a great opportunity to focus on family and spend some quality time together.

Shared experiences bring loved ones closer, and Halloween is a perfect time for doing something with the people in your life who matter most, whether it’s your immediate family, college family, friends, siblings or extended family.

These family-friendly activities can help you create some special spooky memories this Halloween with your friends and loved ones:

Visit local attractions. Our community offer seasonal events or destinations where you can find all kinds of family fun while enjoying a refreshing autumn afternoon. Some popular examples include events like Kiddo-Ween and Spooky Science Monster Mash, corn mazes, pumpkin patches and haunted houses. You might also find other attractions such as hayrides and petting zoos.

Decorate pumpkins. Designing the perfect jack-o’-lantern or pumpkin creation can be fun for the whole family. Toddlers and younger children can express their creativity through painting, stickers and accessory kits while older children and young adults may find carving kits to be more their style. Consider the options from Pumpkin Masters, which creates new products every year so you can always find something fresh each Halloween.

For example, Premium Sticker Patterns make it easy to peel, stick and carve with pattern transfer sheets while options like Mummy Carving and Decorating Kit or Unicorn Decorating let little creatures in on the fun.

Go trick-or-treating together. Participating in this age-old tradition as a family can make for a fun evening of joy and laughter. You can also incorporate numerous teachable

moments, including reminders about safety around strangers and when crossing the street, practicing manners like please and thank you or taking turns ringing doorbells with friends or siblings.

Watch scary movies. Whether you relive your own youth by introducing your kids to the classics or explore more contemporary flicks, gathering the group around the screen for a frighteningly fun movie night can appeal to the whole family. With so many options available, you can easily find something age-appropriate for your little ones – just be sure to add some seasonal snacks to make the night complete.

Recycle Your Pumpkin Once the holiday fun is done, you may wonder what to do with your leftover

Bake the seeds. Whether you eat them yourself or share them with local wildlife, roasted pumpkin seeds provide a tasty treat. They’re delicious with a light coating of olive oil and salt, or you can get creative with seasonings and spices.

Make slime. The stringy, gooey insides of a pumpkin make for a ghoulish bowl of goopy guts, perfect for Halloween pranks. You can use the pulp in its natural form or search for recipes that add ingredients like glue, water and baking soda for even more texture.

Compost it. Pumpkins generate organic waste, so adding them to a compost bin (or burying them) can be quite beneficial for the soil. Either option returns organic matter to the Earth, rather than heaping it into a landfill

where it’s just adding to accumulating food waste.

Create a planter. If you save the pieces carved from your jack-o’-lanterns, you can use a toothpick to secure them in place. Then you’ll be left with a vessel that’s perfect for using as a seasonal planter. Add some mums or other autumn blooms and enjoy them throughout the fall.

Donate to a nearby farm. Pumpkins can be a tasty treat for wildlife and livestock. If you don’t have animals like bunnies and squirrels to share your pumpkin with in your own backyard, check with area farms to see if they’d like your leftover pumpkins to use as food for the animals.

Time and Money: Avoid the Emergency Room

hen you or a loved one is sick, in pain, or otherwise in need of immediate medical care, your first impulse is most likely to visit an emergency room (ER). Emergency rooms have become the first stop for care even if the symptoms don’t warrant such extreme measures.

When emergency rooms are used improperly, they take away resources from patients who need emergency care, contribute to the rise of health insurance costs and could pose as a more costly option for our patients.

According to the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI), approximately 124 million people visit the ER each year and about 30 percent, or nearly $38 billion, of those visits are considered wasteful. A large national survey, of emergency department

conducted by NEHI also found that 56 percent of all visits were avoidable. Below are some common reasons to visit Care Resource, instead of the emergency room:

October is National Bullying Prevention Month

ational Bullying Prevention Month, a campaign established by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center (NBPC) in 2006, kicks off on October 1. The month-long, nationwide campaign has a goal of preventing childhood bullying, and promoting kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

“National Bullying Prevention Month is an important time to elevate the conversation of addressing and preventing bullying by calling attention to the issue, encouraging local action, offering information and education, and providing a platform to host school and community events. News media plays a critical role in sharing bullying prevention information,” said Julie Hertzog, director of PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center.

“Community involvement is central to National Bullying Prevention month,” Hertzog said. “Bullying affects the whole

community, and PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center offers age-appropriate resources to help students, parents, educators, and community members learn about and take action to prevent bullying.”

Facts about bullying

Bullying is widespread. One in five students report they have been bullied. Chances are a young person you care about has been or is being bullied.

Bullying has long-term effects. When a young person is bullied, it impacts their health, education, and safety when it oc curs and well into the future. The negative effects of bullying can last a lifetime.

Bullying affects others. Those who witness bullying feel less safe, helpless to stop the behavior, and intimidated.

can happen wherever youth come together: at school, online, in youth groups, athletic and academic competitions, and neighborhoods.

“Everyone has a role to play in bullying prevention,” Hertzog said. “National Bullying Prevention Month puts a spotlight on bullying behavior and what we can all do to end it.”

Should Moms Keep Kids’ Secrets From Dads?

Did Mrs. Reynolds call?” It’s the first thing my friend’s daughter Hailey asked when she got in the car after school. She’d gotten in trouble in science class and was checking to see if her teacher had followed through with her promise to phone her parents. My friend replied, “Yup.” Hailey immediately started crying and asked, “Are you going to tell Dad?” My friend said, “Yup.”

It can be tempting to keep your child’s secret from your husband to build trust or have a special understanding just between the two of you, but you’re parenting as a team, right? You’d want to know if your kids confided in your husband. Is this a one-sizefits-all situation, or should you keep your child’s secret from your spouse sometimes? Here are 4 scenarios and whether it’s right to stay quiet or time to share the truth.

1A Bad Grade or a Call From the Teacher – Tell

If your son or daughter brings home a bad test score or you receive a phone call from a teacher, your husband deserves to know. In many homes, Mom is the one who monitors what’s happening at school, but fathers shouldn’t be kept in the dark.

In my friend’s situation, she knew her husband cared more about their daughter’s conduct than academics, so withholding the fact that she was acting out in science class felt like she was undermining him. As much pressure as there is on kids in school today, you and your husband need to be a united front, and keeping secrets isn’t going to achieve that.

2A Personal Issue – Stay quiet, but…

A few months ago, I learned that my 8-year-old thinks a girl is pretty.

I wouldn’t call it a crush. It’s Ginny Weasley from the Harry Potter movies. I’m not sure why, but he asked me not to tell his stepdad about his fondness for the redheaded wizard in training. I told him I wouldn’t say anything because it was so innocent and there are no risks. I wanted him to know he could talk to me about crushes or other personal things without it making its way to my husband.

Some girls beg their moms not to blab when they start their periods. It’s such an awkward time! For personal stuff like body issues and crushes, should you keep your child’s secret from your spouse? I think you tell your daughter you’ll keep it quiet, but hint to your husband privately and ask him to pretend like he doesn’t know. No need to tell brothers!

3A Relationship – Tell

In high school, a friend of mine was dating a boy behind her father’s back.

parenting
16 kiddos | October • November 2022

When the kid’s car broke down one night and she had to call her father from a payphone at a gas station, not only did her father lose trust in her, it hurt his relationship with his wife, who’d been keeping the information from him. He felt disrespected.

If your child asks you not to tell your husband he or she is dating, it should be a red flag. Either this is the wrong person to date, or it’s time to have a conversation about your family’s rules for dating.

4Caught Doing Bad – Tell, but…

The creator of iMOM, Susan Merrill, would say, “Tell, but be careful with your timing.” One Friday night when her older son was in high school, she started mysteriously receiving all of his texts on her phone. All his conversations with friends were right there in front of her. She learned about some behaviors that warranted punishment, but she knew her husband wouldn’t be able to keep quiet about the texts and she wanted to gather more intel before confronting her son.

If your child gets into trouble, your husband needs and deserves to know. Often kids want to keep it a secret because Dad has a temper. If that’s the case, tell him privately and give him time to process alone before having him speak to your child.

But why are they asking to keep it a secret?

If your kids are asking you to keep secrets from your spouse, ask yourself and them why. Is it because she doesn’t want Dad to be disappointed in her? When her dad sees her mistakes and offers forgiveness, she’ll receive the security that comes from knowing the unconditional love of a father. Does your child think Dad is unfair or unreasonable? Then take the time to sit down with your husband and tell him the kids are putting up walls and things need to change.

Should you keep your child’s secret from your spouse? Are there times when it’s OK? k

Thanksgiving Traditions:

10 Ways Americans Make Memories and Give Thanks

E

ach year, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. Many families still follow traditions that stem from the very first Thanksgiving, but others have created their own! Here are some traditions that are followed and carried on each year to celebrate this day of Thanks:

1The Feast. One of the first things that comes to mind when we think about Thanksgiving is the food! Traditional foods play a big role in holiday celebration including turkey, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, cranberry sauce, cornbread and pie. And part of the fun is including the entire family in meal prep!

2Travel. Family takes center stage when celebrations abound. For some, one of their favorite aspects of Thanksgiving is spending time with loved ones. Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year, as many drive or fly to be with those close to them.

3Parades.

The New York City Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade features giant inflatable balloons that float between the skyscrapers, marching bands and performances. The first parade marched down Broadway in 1924, and has since grown to an event with more than 3.5 million spectators.

while making a wish. Whoever breaks off the larger part of the wishbone will have their wish granted.

4Football.

In addition to watching the parade, many families enjoy watching football on Thanksgiving. And some even play their own game outside! Football is one of most popular sports to watch in the USA and games being played on Thanksgiving dates back to as early as 1876, shortly after the game was invented! This year, as usual, the Cowboys and Lions are playing, as well as the Bills, Giants, Patriots and Vikings!

6Paying it Forward. Part of giving thanks is appreciation for all we have, but it also includes helping others that may not be as fortunate. Some families volunteer to serve food at homeless shelters, some donate to shelters and others participate in food drives.

5Wishbone.

Breaking the wishbone is a tradition many families uphold. families include breaking the turkey's wishbone as part of their celebration. Two people each grab a side and break the bone apart

7Homeland Helpings. Pilgrims were immigrants when they celebrated their first Thanksgiving, leaving everything behind to reinvent themselves in a new country. Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated for many immigrants, regardless of their ancestral land. New American families often transform the Thanksgiving table with flavors from their homelands.

8Friendsgiving. Friends + Thanksgiving = Friendsgiving! Friendsgiving combines the best aspects of this holiday with a great guest list! Usually celebrated in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, it’s a tradition to spend some QT with your closest pals.

9Sharing Gratitude.

giving is the perfect time to reflect on the year, surrounded by the love and support of family and friends. Some choose to go around the room and share something that they are grateful for. It’s heart-warming to hear everyone talk about their favorite moments, experiences, people and places.

time relaxing together or playing games, inside or outside. Some may even choose to take a nap (thanks to tryptophan)!

10Quality

Time. After the food is eaten, the table cleaned, and dishes washed, many families spend

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate, remember our blessings, and to spend time with loved ones. There are so many ways to honor this holiday, and each family makes it their own and special to them. Despite all the differences, and the many traditions that may be adopted or followed, there is one thing that remains the same: there is always a reason to give thanks, including the priceless gift of life, laughter and love. k

Fall Camping at Jellystone Park

bookings for Halloween fun are still available

If this summer’s high travel prices took a toll on your family’s vacation plans, this is the perfect time to book a last-minute camping, glamping or RV trip to a Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park location.

There are more than 75 Jellystone Park locations nationwide that are known for their fall and Halloween activities and events. You can enjoy trick-or-treating, magic pumpkin patches, costume and site decorating contests, arts and crafts, haunted hayrides and, of course, interactions with Yogi Bear, Boo Boo and Cindy Bear.

This year, many families are finding that camping, glamping and RVing are the cure to “vacation inflation,” as they are a great value compared to other types of trips. Most Jellystone Park locations are located within a two-hour drive of major cities, making access easy and affordable.

Most families choose to stay in glamping cabins which feature all the comforts of home, includ ing kitchens, heat and air conditioning, bathrooms, flat panel TVs and Wi-Fi. The cost of a

Jellystone Park cabin compares favorably to a hotel room. With most activities included in the price of a cabin or RV site rental, there is no need to leave the campground to visit other attractions, saving you time and money. According to family camping expert and outdoor TV host Jack Steward, fall is one

of the best times of the year for families to camp.

“Temperatures are cooler, there are fewer bugs and campgrounds are less crowded,” he said. “And all the activities are so much fun. Campers really know how to get into the spirit and celebrate Halloween!”

Steward noted that in addi tion to the Jellystone Park activities included in the cost of a cabin or RV site, you can avoid the high cost of eating out by cooking at your campsite or in your cabin or RV. Fall also brings lower rates, especially on weekdays, which are ideal for parents who are working from home
