What's on

Hello Everyone, I can't believe we are now in March and have already been spoilt with temperatures reaching up to 18° (please let it continue). It's been lovely enjoying the garden and parks without the need for hats, scarfs, gloves and blankets. However, whether rain or shine, it's great to get outdoors - especially to help the kids burn off some energy. Which, is why we have contacted some local attractions on page 20 to give you some ideas on a fun family day out. Another way to keep the kids busy and active is by joining them to an after-school activity or Easter camp/workshop see page 10 for our Active Kids Feature. This is the time of year when some schools have their open days. Therefore, if you're looking to change your child's school or getting ideas for September see our Schools Feature on page 17.

Things we like for Spring

Let’s be honest, not all of us are blessed with craft skills. So, we have hand-picked some of our favourite spring ideas that can be easily achieved at home.

Mother’s Day Gift Jar

These gift jars look lovely filled with Mum’s favourite things. They can be used to store other things afterwards. Painting the jar is optional but easy with spray paint. Just mask off the parts of the jar that you want to keep clear and spray the rest, you may need two coats. Fill the jar with lots of lovely things and then tie a ribbon or perhaps new scarf around the top Hang a tag and you are finished.

Mother’s Day Vouchers

Make your mum some personal ’Gift Vouchers’. Print out templates from the internet or design your own vouchers, fill them in with things that your mum would like. How about a manicure, a weekend full of lie-ins, breakfast in bed, a day at the beach, helping with chores, making dinner, the list is endless. Not just for Mother’s day!

Yummy treats

How about making a delicious treat, strawberries covered in chocolate. Easy to make and delicious to eat. Clean the strawberries – don’t remove the stalks, you’ll need to hold these when dipping! Let the strawberries dry completely. Melt milk chocolate in a glass bowl over simmering water. Dip the strawberries in, holding the stem, then place in lines on a flat tray. Melt white chocolate in the same way, dip a fork in and drizzle the white chocolate over the coated strawberries. Allow to set for about 30 minutes and then enjoy.

Spring Flowers

Try filling a variety of glasses and jars with water and a drop of food colouring, pop a flower in each and you have a lovely bright display. Arrange your flowers in a vase and place inside a larger vase. Use whatever you like to fill the gap between vases. For example; for Easter you could use coloured eggs, or sweets. You can do this at any time of year using anything that takes your fancy or suits your theme.

Delicious salads

As it starts to warm up (hopefully) it’s lovely to make some fresh and tasty salads. Our favourite is Greek salad made with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, olives, feta cheese and a dill and garlic dressing or for a more traditional recipe, drizzle the salad with olive oil, white wine vinegar and sprinkle with some oregano. Delicious on it’s own and great as a side dish.

Cupcakes

Easter is a great time for having fun with cupcake decorating. Have a look on the internet for some great ideas. We particularly liked these eggs hiding in the grass. However, you may need be a bit handier with an icing bag! Or the sheep made from sticking mini marshmallows to butter icing on a cupcake of your choice - Yummy. We hope you find these ideas fun and do let us know if you make any by emailing office@kidaround.biz with some pictures. Don’t be scared or upset if they don’t come out like the images - just enjoy! 4 • Spring 19 • www.kidaround.biz

TV presenter Stacey Solomon partners with O2 and NSPCC to highlight online knowledge game between parents and kids O2 and NSPCC upgrades Parents vs Kids quiz to help more families learn from each other in a fun and interactive way This March, O2 and the NSPCC’s quiz, Parents vs Kids, which encourages healthy competition amongst families, will be available on mobile, tablet and desktop. The progression of the game follows its success last year on Amazon Alexa. The game consists of ten questions and is designed to trigger family conversations about the digital world and help inform about topics such as internet safety, online slang, social networks and general online knowledge. Nearly three-quarters of children don’t know Instagram’s default privacy setting, whilst over half (60%) of parents aren’t aware that WhatsApp can monitor your location. These are some of the findings from the adults and children that have played the cross generational quiz, Parents vs Kids, since it launched in October. One of the first families to experience the new version of Parents vs Kids on tablet and all the fun and benefits it brings are the Solomon’s, with TV presenter Stacey and her son Zachary recently going head-to-head to tackle the quiz. Speaking about the game Stacey said: “Zachary and I had so much fun playing the Parents vs Kids game. As you can imagine, our competitive streak definitely came out! Within just a few minutes of playing the game we both found ourselves learning things we didn’t know before…it’s a great educational game, that’s fun and interactive!” The expansion of the online quiz comes weeks after O2 and the NSPCC confirmed it was to extend its award-winning partnership. The telecoms provider and the children’s protection charity are working together across the UK to help parents communicate more confidently about the online world with their kids through a range of tools and services. These include Net Aware, a parents’ guide to 50 of the most popular social media sites, apps and games that young people use, a dedicated advice line, and face to face tech support from digital experts, O2 guru’s, in O2 stores. Nina Bibby, Chief Marketing Officer, O2 said: “Our partnership with the NSPCC plays an important role in helping parents understand the online world. We were delighted that the launch of our Parents vs Kids quiz, in October last year, drove over 1.5 million meaningful conversations between parents and their children about the digital world. We are excited to take it to the next level with the creation of the mobile, tablet and desktop versions.” Laura Randall, Associate Head of Child Safety Online, NSPCC said: “With the digital world, particularly social media, evolving all the time it is vital that parents and their children know how to stay safe online. “By extending our partnership with O2 we aim to reach millions more adults with vital information and advice that will help them make the internet a safer and more fun place to be for young people.” To find our moer and to play the Parents vs Kids quiz visit: www.o2.co.uk/help/nspcc/parents-vs-kids/play#/

International Pillow Fight Day Saturday 6th April

On this date, massive pillow fights will take place in cities around the world including London, New York, Rotterdam and Seattle, to name just a few. The first World Pillow Fight day took place in March 2008, and since then the movement has grown with pillow fighting flash mobs fighting it out in more and more cities every year, all just in the name of fun. So, grab a pillow and get fighting!

National Brother & Sister Day Wednesday 10th April Originally celebrated in the US it is now recognised in many other countries including the UK. It's a great day to share with your sibling and let them know you care. If you are an only child, celebrate it with your closest friend as they are very important too.

Active Kids - Advice and ideas on keeping your kids fit and happy Physical activity guidelines for children and young people How much physical activity do children under 5 years old need to do to keep healthy? Being physically active every day is important for the healthy growth and development of babies, toddlers and preschoolers. For this age group, activity of any intensity should be encouraged, including light activity and more energetic physical activity. Babies Babies should be encouraged to be active throughout the day, every day. Before your baby begins to crawl, encourage them to be physically active by reaching and grasping, pulling and pushing, moving their head, body and limbs during daily routines, and during supervised floor play, including tummy time. Once babies can move around, encourage them to be as active as possible in a safe, supervised and nurturing play environment. Toddlers Children who can walk on their own should be physically active every day for at least 180 minutes (3 hours). This should be spread throughout the day, indoors or outside. The 180 minutes can include light activity such as standing up, moving around, rolling and playing, as well as more energetic activity like skipping, hopping, running and jumping. Active play, such as using a climbing frame, riding a bike, playing in water, chasing games and ball games, is the best way for this age group to get moving. All children aged under 5 Children under 5 should not be inactive for long periods, except when they're asleep. Watching TV, travelling by car, bus or train, or being strapped into a buggy for long periods are not good for a child's health and development. There's growing evidence that such behaviour can increase their risk of poor health.

10 • Spring 19 • www.kidaround.biz

All children under 5 who are overweight can improve their health by meeting the activity guidelines, even if their weight doesn't change. To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, they may need to do additional activity and make dietary changes. Guidelines for 5- to 18-year-olds To maintain a basic level of health, children and young people aged 5 to 18 need to do: at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day – this should range from moderate activity, such as cycling and playground activities, to vigorous activity, such as running and tennis on 3 days a week, these activities should involve exercises for strong muscles and bones, such as swinging on playground equipment, hopping and skipping, and sports such as gymnastics or tennis Children and young people should also reduce the time they spend sitting for extended periods of time, including watching TV, playing computer games and travelling by car when they could walk or cycle. Being active for at least 60 minutes a day is linked to better general health, stronger bones and muscles, and higher levels of self-esteem. More can be found at www.nhs.uk To help you and your family achieve these guidelines, see our range of after-school activities and activity camps to help keep your child stay fit, healthy and happy. For more from our Active Kids advertisers, please go online at www.kidaround.biz where they have written articles to give you more information on what they can offer you and your children.

Theatricool Performing Arts

10 years old and an exciting year ahead. In 2019 Theatricool is 10 years old! Hard to believe that the little company that started with a Summer School and 16 children has evolved into a thriving school with over 150 children aged from 3-18. They have had to expand their lower school by doubling the classes and the upper school now has additional senior classes to keep up with demand. Year on year they have increased their numbers and produced more and more ambitious performances. They have performed at The Mercury, Lakeside and Headgate theatres and the on the stages of Colchester Institute to sell out crowds performing some of the worlds best musicals including, Seussical, Peter Pan, Madagascar, Little Mermaid and Alice in Wonderland. This year they are thrilled to be performing the Essex premier of Wind in the Willows, a show staged in the West End in 2017 starring their fabulous vocal coach Craig Mather as Mole and Sally comments, "how lucky are we to have a Westend star teaching for us?" Next year they are over the moon to have the rights to perform Shrek The Musical, The rights are very rarely granted and they are the only local group given permission to stage the Disney production in 2020, a very exciting show which is already being planned meticulously. They pride themselves in giving their students the opportunity to perform twice a year as performing is at the heart of everything they do, all their children, no matter their ability, are given the chance to shine and this in turn breeds confidence. We do have a waiting list for September but we are expanding further with new classes all the time, so get in touch! www.theatricool.co.uk

SCHOOLS

St. John’s School, Billericay

New Hall School

New Hall is a boarding and day school for girls and boys aged 3-18 years. The spacious and scenic school site is dominated by the former Tudor palace of Beaulieu, once owned by Henry VIII. The highly successful ‘diamond model’ structure: co-education in the Preparatory Divisions, single-sex education in the Senior Divisions and co-education in the Sixth Form, enables the school to provide the best of both worlds, the benefits of a co-educational environment together with the advantages of girls and boys being taught separately during the formative years of adolescence. In 2018, GCSE and A Level students achieved impressive results, with over 36% of A Level grades at A*-A and 71% A*-B, whilst 55% of GCSE grades were A*/A or 7+ and 86% A*-B or equivalent. The school has an established Oxbridge programme, with a successful track record of offers from both universities. New Hall is committed to developing its facilities. A Nursery for children aged 1-3 opens in September 2019; Pre-Prep pupils enjoy the use of school woodland, as part of the Forest School initiative; and a new Science Centre is currently being planned. The Preparatory Division at New Hall is going through an exciting period of expansion, with additional classes being added in Years 3-5; places are available for September 2019. The co-curricular provision in music, performing arts and sport is outstanding; national and regional successes abound. Sports facilities include: a national standard athletics track, floodlit AstroTurf pitches, 3G pitch, fitness centre and gym, floodlit tennis and netball courts, cricket and rugby pitches, and a 25m indoor swimming pool. High expectations and achievements, along with outstanding pastoral care, make New Hall a wonderful place to be educated. For more information see their website: www.newhallschool.co.uk

From the moment a child enters St John’s, whatever their age, they are treated as an individual. Kindergarten pupils benefit from having specialist teachers for Music and PE. Junior pupils study verbal and non-verbal reasoning and continue to have specialist teachers for the subjects above and also for French, Art, Computing and Swimming. Senior School pupils follow a broad curriculum, with GCSE courses including PE, Art, Drama, French, Spanish, Geography, History, Music, Computing, Statistics and traditional core subjects. In 2018 96% of pupils achieved 5 or more A*-C or 9-4 grade GCSEs. Their passion is to ensure that when a child leaves St. John’s School they have fully achieved their potential. They instil all the virtues of politeness, integrity and consideration of others into pupils, creating a magical atmosphere where learning, creativity and success is enjoyed by everyone. Open Days will be held on Tuesday 30th April with tours commencing at 9.30am and 10.30am and on Saturday 18th May 2019 from 10am to 1pm. Top first aid tips by the Bristish Red Cross How to help a baby who is choking If a baby is choking, they won’t be able to cry, cough, make any noise or breathe. 1. Give back blows: hold them face down along your thigh with their head lower than their bottom. Hit them firmly on their back between the shoulder blades up to five times. 2. If back blows do not dislodge the object, give chest thrusts: turn them over so they are facing upwards and place two fingers in the middle of their chest, just below the nipples. Push sharply downwards up to five times. 3. Call 999 if the object does not dislodge. Continue with cycles of back blows and chest thrusts until the object dislodges. How to help an unresponsive and breathing baby 1. Check for breathing. Tilt their head back and look and feel for breaths by looking at their chest to see if it’s moving and feeling for breaths on your cheek. If they are breathing, move on to step two. 2. Hold the baby on their side with their head slightly tilted back, supported and lower than their bottom. 3. Call 999.

CHILDCARE

How to help a baby or child who has a burn 1. Cool the burn under cold running water for at least ten minutes. 2. After the burn has been cooled, cover it with cling film or a clean plastic bag. 3. Always seek medical advice if a baby or child has been burned. How to help a baby or child who is having a febrile seizure Febrile seizures are caused by a fever or high temperature. When a baby has a febrile seizure they may arch their back, stiffen their body and have clenched fists. They may be red faced, hot to touch and sweating. 1. Protect them from injury, but do not restrain them. 2. Cool them by removing outer clothing and opening a window if the room is hot. 3. When the seizure is over, help them to rest on their side with their head tilted back. 4. If the symptoms continue or it is their first seizure, seek medical advice. These guidelines was provided by the British Red Cross. More information can be found at www.redcross.org.uk/firstaid
