News & Views Holmwood House Receives The Good Schools Guide Stamp of Approval

Holmwood House Preparatory School in Lexden, Colchester, has gained the ultimate stamp of approval, by becoming the only independent school in Colchester to feature in The Good Schools Guide, and one of just a handful in the whole of the county. Holmwood House, which accommodates children from age 4 up to 13, was selected for consideration earlier in the summer, whilst a number of current parents were approached for their feedback on the school. Now the review has been published, the Headmaster, Alexander Mitchell, is delighted with the content. “The report has captured the essence of Holmwood, especially the focus on our three Cs – care, courtesy and consideration. Holmwood is essentially a happy school with high expectations and aspirations for all of our children whether they are academic high flyers, keen on sports or talented in the arts. There is something here for every child; we nurture strengths and support weaknesses.”

Butterfly Blue Day Nursery

The school is thriving and the inclusion in the Good Schools Guide follows an incredibly successful summer. In June 2013, not only did every Year 8 pupil secure a place at their first choice senior school, an incredibly impressive 50% of them gained scholarships and academic commendations.

The event finished with a very successful charity balloon race that raised £150 for One By One’s children’s home in Kenya (a charity that the nursery manager has supported and personally visited).

The good news continued in September as the school welcomed two full Reception classes, as well as new children in to most other year groups. Spaces for Reception 2014 entry and beyond are filling up fast. Holmwood House School’s review is live online and will be included in the printed version of The Good Schools Guide in 2014. A link to the review may be found at www.holmwood.essex.sch.uk

This September, Butterfly Blue Nursery took to the sky in an actionpacked family day. Butterfly Blue opened its doors to families and visitors to come and join in on the day of fun activities. The event was full of crafts, activities, bouncy castles, animal corner, and face-painting!

Manager, Grace Charters, said ‘What a great way to celebrate our first summer at Butterfly Blue. All the families got to meet each other, share some food, fun and face-painting with the staff team. Our balloon race was a massive success, with the furthest balloon travelling over 63 miles to Norfolk!’ Butterfly Blue opened its nursery doors in January 2013. They are having a very successful first year, with the further launch of Tree House after-school and holiday club. Butterfly Blue wish to provide the community with a wrap-around care facility that can cater for all the family! The nursery is set in the spacious refurbished Garrison Theatre, with original grand features and large gardens. For more information on the nursery please call on 01206 764191 or visit the website www.butterflybluedaynursery.co.uk

KidAround’s New Charity of the Year Families InFocus (Essex)

KidAround is delighted to announce that our new Charity of the Year for 2014 is Families InFocus (Essex) whose work supports families of children with disabilities and special needs. Families InFocus (Essex) is an active and vibrant parent-led, independent charity offering free specialist advice, information and support to any Essex family who has a child or young person with any disability or special need. Set up in 1996, following intensive research into the needs of families of children with disabilities and special needs, the charity now has over 4,000 families on its books and provides in-depth support to over 900 different families each year. They are unique in what they do, as their support is not limited to a set time. They can help families with children aged from newborn to 19, on any number of presenting issues, throughout their child’s development. They have a committed and dedicated team of staff, trustees and volunteers who are sensitive to disability issues. Their team of highly-skilled and experienced Family Support Advisers provide an outreach service (one-toone support, home visits, attending school and other meetings) which is co-ordinated across Essex. They have an enviable record of making a real difference to children and families. Support includes help with education issues to ensure the child receives appropriate support or additional resources in the classroom, ongoing emotional support, help with obtaining disability-related benefits for the child to help with extra costs, and preparing for and attending appeals and tribunals (both education and benefits). For many they are a real lifeline, summed up by one parent who said “Families InFocus made me feel I was no longer alone. They gave me hope”. They also hold regular fun events which families eagerly look forward to; drop-ins across the county where parents/carers can meet, relax and enjoy some pampering and much more. Families InFocus (Essex) is a registered charity no. 1062311 and a limited company registered in England and Wales no. 3287829. News & Views Colchester High School To Open A Sixth Form

Colchester High School has announced the expansion of the 132-year-old school, with the opening of a Sixth Form at their Study Centre in Oxford Road from September 2014. Significant investment will be made at the Centre to accommodate a student common room, study rooms and new science laboratory, allowing students to study a wide range of A Level subjects.

The Oxford Road Study Centre – future home of the Colchester High School Sixth Form

Cognita, the school’s parent company, will also use this as an opportunity to improve facilities further on the main school site.

The Principal, David Young, said “We are very excited about this new educational offering. Our Sixth Formers will enjoy a unique experience with many benefits, including our small class sizes, which allow us to offer a tailored approach to learning, treating each student as an individual. Our ambition is that each pupil achieves the best possible grades at A Level and we are all very keen to continue to build on the strong academic success seen at the school over the last few years.” The school will be accepting applications from external candidates from December 1st 2013. Big Garden Birdwatch

It will be eyes to the skies on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th January 2014, as the nation takes part in the RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch. The activity is the biggest garden wildlife survey in the world and last year almost 600,000 people counted the birds in their garden. This year, participants will be hoping that further declines of garden favourites recorded last year have slowed down. Starlings hit an all-time low in the 2012 Birdwatch but their numbers then sunk by a further 16 per cent last year. Numbers of house sparrows, which are of high conservation concern, dropped by 17 per cent in gardens compared to 2012, whilst bullfinches and dunnocks fell by 20 per cent and 13 per cent respectively. Big Garden Birdwatch, which has been running for 35 years, provides the RSPB with masses of information about changes in numbers of garden birds in winter, and helps to alert conservationists to significant declines in UK garden species like house sparrows and starlings. And this year, for the first time, participants are being asked to log some of the other wildlife they see in their gardens too. The RSPB wants to know whether people ever see deer, squirrels, badgers, hedgehogs, frogs and toads in their gardens, to help build an overall picture of how important our gardens are for giving all types of wildlife a home. Participants don’t have to count these other species over the Big Garden Birdwatch weekend, just tell the RSPB whether they have ever seen them in their gardens, at any time of year. To take part, people are asked to spend just one hour at any time of Big Garden Birdwatch weekend noting the highest number of each bird species seen in their gardens or local outside space at any one time. They then have three weeks to submit their results to the RSPB, either online at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch or in the post. From 16th December 2013 you can register to take part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2014 at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

You’d Be Mad To Miss The Voyage of 1001 Nights!

Fame Factory Spotlight are bringing their travelling panto to Charter Hall, at Leisure World Colchester on Saturday 14 December, at 7pm.

Mad spins the Arabian Nights story giving it a modern twist and has churned it through their Mad story-telling machine, peppered with off-thewall comedy, a smattering of music and some good booing, hissing and whatever else you feel like doing!

For years, ugly sisters Verucca and Hernia have been making Cinderella’s life a misery out of hate and jealousy. But Cinderella, a kind and gentle positive girl, never loses hope. She finally discovers something to smile about when she meets a handsome stranger in the woods, whilst collecting firewood for her revolting step sisters. Embarrassed and confused, she flees, leaving the handsome stranger who is, of course, Prince Charming. He falls immediately in love with Cinderella, but what do you do when you fall in love with a stranger, you fear you will never see again? An adventure begins.

The Mad About Theatre Company is swooping onto the West Cliff Theatre stage on their Mad Magical carpet. The Mad crew makes their 28th crazy appearance with “The Voyage of 1001 Nights.”

If that sounds like the perfect start to the festive season and gives you a breather from Christmas shopping or provides some warm and light relief from a cold Saturday, hurry down to the West Cliff Theatre box office. Grab the hottest tickets in town, at a cool £6 for adults and £3 for children. You could even go for complete and utter matinee madness 10 tickets for £30! Performances take place on Saturday 7th December at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. This extra-special show is raising funds for St Helena Hospice, the local hospice service providing free end of life care. St Helena Hospice also provide care to families and patients who have life-limiting illnesses in their own home, at the hospice day centres or within Myland Hall at Colchester. The Mad About Theatre company are a community theatre company that encourages local children and adults to access affordable theatre and learn theatre skills. Along the way we meet: Buttons, Cinderella’s trusty friend who always puts a smile on her face and makes everyone laugh out loud; the dreaded ugly sisters, the zany and dizzy Fairy Godmother. Dandini, the mysterious prince’s assistant who always seems to help, and, of course, Prince Charming, true to his name, and the most handsome man in the land. Last but not least the stunning, yet modest, Cinderella. This is a spectacular and magical panto with added Fame Factory Spotlight Sparkle, which promises comedy, fun, craziness, moments of tenderness and romance. Not to mention lots of topical references, audience participation with songs we all know and love. Families of all ages won’t be able to help but sing along and laugh out loud. Buy tickets: £10 adults, £8 children, or £30 for a family ticket (2 adults/2 children) from the Charter Hall Box Office, 01206 282020 or in person at Leisure World Colchester.

Pantomimes

Cinderella – The Magical Family Pantomime Mercury Theatre

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a trip to the Mercury Theatre to watch their annual feel-good festive panto – and this year they’ll be awakening Sleeping Beauty to entertain you! In a glittering castle in a land far, far away, friends and family gather to celebrate a baby’s birth. Never was a child more blessed – beloved daughter of a king and queen, the treasured princess is watched over by her doting family. But not everyone’s in the mood for celebrating. The King and Queen have forgotten to invite one very bad-tempered guest. One day, the beautiful princess will prick her finger and fall asleep for 100 years. The rest, as they say, is…well, panto - and this year it has a futuristic twist! Damsels in distress, heroes coming to the rescue, everyone’s favourite dame and a host of other fantastic characters are at the ready to bring you music and laughter in one of the greatest fairytales ever told. Sleeping Beauty, which runs from December 6 to January 11, is suitable for children aged three and up. There’s a captioned performance on December 18 and an audio description show on January 4. They also have a relaxed performance on January 8 for those with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disabilities, or sensory or communication disorders. The show’s running time is approximately two hours and 15 minutes including the interval, and tickets start at just £10. For full details about performance times and to book tickets, visit www.mercurytheatre.co.uk/event/sleeping-beauty or call the box office on 01206 573948.

Cinderella, the most magical pantomime of all, shall be at the Civic Theatre from Wednesday 4th December 2013 to Sunday 5th January 2014.

Cinderella has just lost her beloved father and has been put in the care of her stepmother who has two daughters of her own. To pay her way, Cinderella is made to live below stairs and do all the cleaning, mending and cooking for her lazy step family! Will Cinderella be rescued by her prince and live happily ever after? Oh yes she will! Meet the awful and elaborately dressed Ugly Sisters, Cinderella’s wicked stepmother, Buttons, the Fairy Godmother, the dashing and handsome Prince Charming and of course, beautiful Cinderella herself. There will also be a special appearance from two Shetland ponies who will be taking Cinderella to the ball in her sparkling coach! In association with the Chelmsford Civic Theatre, One From The Heart brings another action-packed family show to Chelmsford, Featuring all the traditional pantomime ingredients: sparkling storybook sets, energetic song and dance routines, beautiful costumes, plenty of audience participation and the most important ingredient of all – a generous helping of pantomime magic! Reserve your seats NOW by calling the Box Office on 01245 606505 or book online at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres. Tickets are £20.00 (full-price) and £17.00 (concession) with special rates for groups, families and schools.

Book Reviews The Edge Chronicles: Curse of the Gloamglozer by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell rrp £6.99 www.randomhouse.co.uk This book is based in a huge region called the Edge and is set on a floating city called Sanctaphrax. The main character, Quint, is the son of a legendary sky-pirate called Wind Jackal. The lead man on Sanctaphrax, the Most High Acadame, ‘adopts’ him and takes him on as his apprentice. Then weird stuff starts happening to the Acadame, and Quint and the Academe’s daughter try to find out what’s happening. This was a great fantasy book and I think fans of weird and fantasy books would enjoy it. 10/10 stuff, fast-paced humour all the way through! Reviewed by Harry Ikel, aged 12

Fangs Vampire Spy: Operation: Golden Bum by Tommy Donbavand rrp £4.99 www.walker.co.uk I enjoyed both books, but book one was my favourite. They are about ‘Fangs the vampire spy’ and his crimebusting adventures. The bit I enjoyed most in book one was when the main characters asked the zombie questions about a crime and when he didnt want to answer he ripped his own tongue out and threw it in the corner (gross but funny!) My favourite character was the main one, Fangs Enigma, as he was funny and meets weird people. This book is suitable for advanced younger readers (although they might not understand the jokes) or age 8-9+. The only downside is that it would have been brilliant to see more illustrations Reviewed by Samuel Van Vynck, aged 7

Fairy Animals of Misty Wood (Chloe The Kitten) by Lily Small rrp £4.99 www.egmont.co.uk The books are about animals which live in an enchanted wood. They all have special jobs to do. The books are girly, sparkly and have cute pictures inside. My favourite book is Chloe the Kitten, as Chloe has an important job to do in collecting her dew drops. I found it very funny with her walnut shell basket, and she was so forgetful. I love the cute fairy wings, and wished I could fly too. In the back of the books, there are activities and questions. I can’t wait for the next two books to come out! These books are perfect for any young girl aged 6-8. Reviewed by Sophie Greenhalgh, aged 6

Ever After High: The Storybook of Legends by Shannon Hale rrp £9.99 www.littlebrown.co.uk Happy Ever After was a really good book. I loved the cover and the story kept me gripped. It’s all about an enchanted boarding school where the students go to prepare themselves for their destiny, which is being part of a fairytale story. However, the main character, Raven is suppose to be evil in her fairytale just like her mother was in hers. But Raven doesn’t want to be evil and tries to change her own story/future. It is a very good twist on the usual fairytale story books and I didn’t want to put it down.

Olive & Moss Books (Michael the Monkey) by Olive & Moss rrp £5.99 www.egmont.co.uk This is a beautifully illustrated set of four books, each with a different theme – noises, colours, shapes and numbers. At first, Daniel was a little surprised that they don’t have any flaps or fabrics to feel, but they really don’t need them as this focuses your attention on the lovely glossy pictures. They seem very sturdy but are a good size and weight for little hands and Daniel was easily able to turn the pages himself. Our favourite was ‘Michael the Monkey’ as it gave a good opportunity for making lots of instrument noises together! My only reservation would be that a couple of the books are very pink-biased which may not appeal to some people, but overall a fantastic set of books. Reviewed by Daniel, aged 14 months and mum Vicki

Just Imagine series by Nick Sharratt www.randomhouse.co.uk Just Imagine Coloring Book With Stickers. rrp £3.99 The first thing that Alice noticed was the stickers in the colouring book which kept her busy for hours. The cover is very bright and we both enjoyed colouring in the pictures. It also captured Alice’s attention and made her ask questions such as ‘What’s this Mummy?’ What are they doing Mummy?’ Just Imagine rrp £5.99 Just Imagine book was just as good. Together, they make a great tool to help talk about all of the things that you want to do or be! Alice and I have sat together every night to look and talk about the pictures, the people and places shown in these books. Reviewed by Alice, aged 2 and her mum Kerry

Birth & Beyond Coming Home From Hospital

Lisa Clegg, author of The Blissful Baby Expert, offers the following advice:

Coming home is the most wonderful part but also the most terrifying! All parents look forward to this moment. However, when you get home and close the door, you inevitably wonder, “OK, now what do I do?” You have this little person whom you created, who is relying on you and is your responsibility for at least the next 18 years. What you do and say, and how you love and care for them, will shape the person they become. It is such a scary thought for all of us, but a perfectly normal one, and experienced by every parent in the world. There is likely to be a queue of visitors waiting to pounce on you the moment you get home. Don’t be afraid to put them off for a few days while you settle yourself and the baby. Do whatever you feel is right. People will understand.

Support for all parents

EXTRA provides a range of parenting courses and workshops for parents of babies, pre-school, primary and secondary aged children. Specialist support is also available, i.e. for parents of children who have additional needs. The following comments from parents show how helpful this support is: • ‘I am a calmer, happier parent. My relationship with my daughter is now what I’ve always wished it would be.’ (Step by Step Early Years Winter ’12) • ‘There is a lot less atmosphere in the home; it’s a much calmer environment.’ (SWAN Spring ’13) • ‘It’s great to know you are not alone’ (Step by Step Secondary Spring ’13) For the full range of support: Visit: www.extrasupportforfamilies.co.uk or call 01255 475001, or follow them on Twitter:@Extra2009

Labour and birth is exhausting and traumatic for you and your baby. It is very normal for your newborn to be unsettled for the first week or so following birth. He or she has been used to being nice and cosy inside you for the last 9 months, and being born is a huge change for them. The baby will probably need to hear or feel you close to her for reassurance. Gracefully accept any help that’s offered in the first few weeks. If someone offers to do your ironing for you, or cook a meal and drop it round, then grab the offer with both hands! You don’t need to be some kind of superwoman running around keeping the house spotless, and cooking wonderful meals. This is just a sure-fire way to become stressed, which in turn will upset your baby. Having some assistance will help you recover from the birth, bond with your baby, and try to establish a regular daily feeding routine, whether you decide to breast or bottle feed. The Blissful Baby Expert is published by Vermilion RRP £10.99 and is available to buy at www.amazon.co.uk. For more information visit www.theblissfulbabyexpert.co.uk You can email Lisa for free advice on sleep or feeding issues at Lisa@theblissfulbabyexpert.com

Birth & Beyond Come and explore with your little treasures

Colchester and Tendring Children’s Centres

Parenting can be one of the most difficult things we undertake in life. Children’s centres offer information and support for families with children under 5, through both professional support and the opportunity to share the ups and downs of parenting with other families. Regular parenting courses for families are available and weekly groups offer peer support and contact with trained staff who are able to provide information and signpost families to other agencies where required. “This parenting group has been really rewarding in all areas of raising my children. I feel pretty confident in every aspect of discipline, my children’s way of thinking, emotionally and developmentally; that makes us all happier as a family so thank you truly” (Parent). Services are planned to support child development holistically through the different stages; from weaning and healthy eating to socialising, play and physical development. “It is nice to know there is help out there and it is alright to ask for help. It builds my confidence no end.” (Parent). Children’s centres work with partner agencies to offer a range of information and activities including baby clinics, adult learning drop-in, Jobcentre Plus outreach, support for young parents and healthy eating and cooking sessions. Story sessions are held in the library and there are drop-in sessions for parents with babies, childminders and stopping smoking. For details of what services are available at your local children’s centres in Colchester and Tendring and for contact details see: www.colchester.surestart.org

Many mother and baby groups can be quite high-noise and high-pace, designed as much for us to mix with other adults as they are for our children to have fun. In our busy world, it is easy to miss the small but significant steps that our children take, particularly if we work or have older children. Little Treasures classes are different, they give you the time to focus purely on your child, celebrating with them each step of the way.

Little Treasures is a series of three classes designed to meet the developing needs of children from about 6 months to 3 years. They provide invaluable tools for laying down the foundations for future learning in all children. The benefits to the child are numerous and the beauty of the concept is that it is easily transferable into the home environment. The children show an incredible ability to self-direct, access, explore and manipulate an amazing variety of safe, attractive everyday objects. A baby’s brain is growing fast, developing in response to their surroundings through the senses of touch, smell, taste, hearing, sight and movement. The classes create a calm and secure environment for you to watch and consider those changes in your child over a period of time, as well as sharing experiences. Trained staff are present to share their valuable knowledge, to support you and your child alike. This is a way of giving your baby a wide range of experiences that help the brain to make connections and develop, the chance to explore and decide for themselves what they want to play with and the levels of concentration that evolve are remarkable. Come and see for yourself. The first session is free and you can be sure of a warm welcome, call Joahnne on 01206 827126.

Grandma’s Diary

Grandparents play an important and often formative role in the lives of many children. KidAround asked grandmother of four, Harriet Miller, to share her experiences of modern grandparenting. She gives us her thoughts below. Denny sits on my lap. He’s a skinny little boy with silky brown hair and a cute turned up nose, and reminds me keenly of his Mummy at the same age. At four and three quarters, he’s just started school. Today is the first day I have collected him instead of Mummy. After relaxing against me for a quarter of an hour, reading together his favourite book, he looks at me with his soft brown eyes and says in a low voice, almost whispering, “Grandma, do you know how much – much – MUCH I love you?” Later, Mummy tells me he says he loves her “the whole world and all the biscuits!” Denny’s just figuring out who Grandma is and how the whole family fits together. “I’m Mummy’s Mummy” I say helpfully, and he looks at me slightly disbelievingly. “Who’s Grandad then?” he asks. Ah, that’s a bit more complicated. “He’s Mummy’s Daddy. But Grandad and Grandma don’t live together like your Mummy and Daddy do…” Hmm!

a huge presence and role in children’s lives. If we were lucky enough to have them, we never forget them, and they shape not just our childhood but also the kind of parents we become and later the kind of grandparents we are in turn. In the best of worlds, they provide a context for who we are and where we come from. They can be the baton-holders and signposts of each generation, giving us the roots of our family history and a map for our journeys through life. And now it’s not “them” but “me” and “us”, as, inexplicably and, it seems, in the blink of an eye I have reached that time of life!

I asked Sophie (aged eleven and just started secondary school) to tell me something important about being my granddaughter. “You live in England and me and Joe live in Wales” she said. “And your other two grandchildren live up the road from you”. All true, and my reply was “but I love you all just the same!” Yes I do, but it is also different. Denny and Rudy (two) are part of my daily life and I babysit a lot for them. When I see Sophie and Joe (eight) it’s nearly always holidays or Christmas, or those special in-between weekends when we dash down and spend an intense 36 hours with them and then don’t see them for months. The “we” is myself and “Gramps”, my husband Robert. Robert has leapt straight from having no children of his own to being very much a grandparent of four, who all love him and have their own relationships with him. We grandparents come by a variety of names, each of which is infused with love. Grandma (Nanny, Granny) and Grandad (Grandpop, Grandpa) can have

Cranial Osteopathy

Not all babies cope well with the powerful processes of birth, as they pass down the birth canal. For example, mechanical stresses affecting nerve supply from the neck and head can affect the tongue, causing feeding problems, or the gastric nerves, causing colic. Tension in the skull can keep the baby in an alert state so the baby has difficulty sleeping. Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle, safe and effective form of osteopathy, and is offered to babies to help them overcome these difficulties. A baby is never too young to be treated and cranial osteopathy is also effective when dealing with toddlers who may have ear infections, sinus and dental problems, asthma and headaches. Often the best results are achieved before the age of five.

Wellbeing Childhood Cancer Awareness Month This December marks the annual Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, CLIC Sargent, is ready for a month of awareness and fundraising. Between 1,500 and 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer each year with up to 50 per cent of them being under five years old. Last year, CLIC Sargent supported more than 6,600 children and young people across the UK. In Essex alone last year, the charity was there for 198 families and provided a total of 155 grants, amounting to £43,470 across the county. Every day, ten children and young people hear the shocking news they have cancer. CLIC Sargent is there to provide practical, emotional and financial support, from diagnosis onwards. To mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, CLIC Sargent is asking people to join its Big Bucket campaign and become a Bucketeer by giving up a small amount of time to collect donations for the charity. You can join the fun for just a couple of hours or make a day of it. The charity is also releasing a report, entitled ‘No young person with cancer left out’ which focuses on the effect of cancer on 16-24 year olds going into further education, training and employment.

“How Do I Care for my Children’s Teeth?” 1. When should I take my children to the dentist?

It is recommended that children go to the dentist with their parents as soon as possible. You should take them on average once every six months, to let them get used to the noises, smells and surroundings and prepare them for future visits. The earlier visits begin, the more relaxed the child will be. 2. How should I clean their teeth? Cleaning your child’s teeth should be part of their daily hygiene routine. You may find it easier to stand or sit behind your child, cradling their chin in your hand so you can reach their top and bottom teeth more easily. When the first teeth start to come through, try using a children’s toothbrush with a small smear of toothpaste; it is important to supervise your child’s brushing until they are at least seven. Once all the teeth have come through, use a small-headed soft toothbrush in small circular movements, concentrating on one section at a time. Brush gently behind the teeth and onto the gums. If possible make tooth brushing a routine – preferably in the morning, and last thing before your child goes to bed. Remember to encourage your child, as praise will often get results! 3. When do my child’s teeth come through? All children are different and develop at different rates. Teeth can also come through in a different order so do not be worried, as your dentist will be able to keep a check on your child’s teeth, and they will be able to highlight any developmental problems.

CLIC Sargent Community Fundraising Manager Karen Roberts said: “We would love to see more people signing up to volunteer at this year’s Big Bucket Campaign. At the moment we can only give two out of three children and young people with cancer, and their families, all the support that they need throughout treatment and beyond. We want to be there for more of them when they need us most, but we can only do this with your help.”

Regular visits to the dentist are essential in helping your child to get used to the surroundings and what goes on there. A child can be much more anxious if it is their first visit to a dental practice. Pain and distress can happen at any time, and it is important to prepare your child with regular visits. If your child already has a good relationship with the dentist, it is much easier for the child, parent and dentist if treatment does become necessary later on.

To find out more about becoming a Bucketeer or getting involved with any fundraising events for CLIC Sargent contact Community Fundraising Manager Karen Roberts on 01284 829090 or email karen.roberts@clicsargent.org.uk

If you have any questions or concerns about your children’s teeth, then contact one of the team at The Dental Studio on 01206 845891.
