Gifts For All Blackwells Farm Shop’s aim is to supply local people with local produce. Traditional farm produce from a real farm...................... Situated at Herons Farm, Colne Road, Coggeshall, Blackwells have been farming there since the 1930s. Howard now carries on the tradition and in addition to the arable farming has grown his own turkeys, geese and large chickens for the Christmas market for the last thirty years. This poultry is all reared and prepared at Herons Farm ensuring minimal stress for the birds.

The poultry is not only for the farm shop, they supply into high end shops and restaurants within the M25 and central London area. Blackwells Farm Shop was developed out of a passion to bring good quality food to everyone at reasonable prices. The majority of the stock is from within a 20 radius; they aim to keep their ‘footprint’ to an absolute minimum. The meat is sourced from local farmers, who are all known and trusted by Howard for their good husbandry skills when caring for their animals. The meat supplied in the shop has not been stressed by travelling long journeys, it is taken straight to their cutting plant from the slaughter house. Every animal has a ‘passport’ and its provenance can be fully traced. Blackwells frequently host tasting days at the shop, inviting their customers to pop along and sample produce from local growers and suppliers. Obviously, Christmas is a big event at Blackwells. Alongside the traditional poultry, they specialise in cooked hams, gammon joints and local beef for the Christmas festivities. On the weekend of November 22nd and 23rd they will be hosting The Christmas Tastings......this gives customers the chance to sample Blackwells home-grown turkey and geese along with all the homemade trimmings, Christmas puds, cakes and mince pies. Blackwells also offer a great selection of Christmas hampers. These contain the best that Blackwells have to offer and can be tailored to your own requirements. The hampers are presented in either a practical wicker shopping basket or boxed. Gift tokens are also available, enabling the recipient to choose their own delights! The vegetables are mainly grown by the Hill family at Tolleshunt D’arcy, delivered to Blackwells just hours after being freshly picked. Soft fruits come from Wickham St Paul, Sible Hedingham, Ardleigh, Great Bentley and Manningtree. Within the farm shop there is a fully functioning kitchen; Mark the Blackwells chef and his staff produce great ‘homemade’ fayre; meat pies, ready meals, desserts, cakes, sausage rolls and pasties etc. He will also make dishes of the customers’ choice by order. Mark also heads up Blackwells Catering Company; producing food for any occasion. He is more than happy to advise on menus........from a picnic to a banquet , a bar-b-que to a full-blown hog roast! Fundraising Activities At St Philomena’s

Children throughout the school at St. Philomena’s in Frinton have been busy raising funds for this year’s charity; Let the Children Live! The charity works with children from the streets and shanty-towns of Medellin in Columbia to help make their lives worth living by giving them love, education and a future.

The youngest children of the school were sponsored to take part in an activity: Nursery children took part in a sponsored bounce and the children in Reception filled Smartie tubes. Years 1 and 2 held a very successful Mini Fête which was held on the playground and the stalls were manned by the children and parent helpers. Favourite stalls included the tombola and the cake stall. There was also a range of activities including ’Beat the Goalie’ and ’Beanbag Throw’ on offer. The children were very enthusiastic and enjoyed taking part. Years 3 and 4 took part in a Sponsored Silence. They were sponsored to keep silent for a whole afternoon by family and friends. The children found it hard work but their teachers were impressed with their dedication and were treated to an unusually peaceful afternoon! The annual Year 5 Sponsored Talent Show also took place. The acts displayed the varied talents of the children, including Irish and Tap dancing, a musical cup routine and an original poetry reading. The children performed enthusiastically and their teacher was very pleased with their efforts. The oldest children of the school opened the Top Class Restaurant to their parents towards the end of term. Year 6 children experienced the responsibility of shopping, preparing, cooking and serving a 2 or 3 course meal to their mums and dads. All events have raised over £1500 for this worthy charity. For more information on St. Philomena’s Catholic School contact 01255 674492 or email: generalenquiries@stphilomenas.com

Schools New Hall School

Choosing a Pre-Reception or Nursery is one of the most important decisions parents have to make. Marisa White, Pre-Reception Manager at New Hall School in Chelmsford, shares her tips for what to look for when making this decision.

Gosfield School

Gosfield School is a small, welcoming, independent co-educational school for ages 4-18, set in 110 acres of beautiful parkland with an impressive sports hall and sports fields. Your child will have the opportunity to excel academically and participate in a wide range of additional activities.

Quality: Ask to see a copy of the recent Ofsted or ISI inspection report, which highlights the overall quality of the education, care and appropriateness of equipment and facilities.

The Prep School includes the Pre-Prep, for children aged 4 to 7, and the Juniors, for pupils aged 7 to 11. The Prep School will soon be moving into new accommodation: a purpose-built suite of state of the art classrooms, with large, well equipped playgrounds and garden areas. Pupils will continue to have some lessons in Gosfield School’s main building, a delightful, renovated Victorian mansion.

Curriculum: The curriculum should be broad and inspirational, providing your child with the chance to try something new, and should be adjusted to match each child’s abilities; it should cover the seven areas of the Early Years Curriculum. At New Hall, there are additional subjects available such as French, Music, Ballet and Sport which are taught by specialist teachers.

Children enjoy the use of excellent facilities, including: a full-size multipurpose sports hall, a superb all-weather sports surface, rugby, football and cricket pitches, a fully refurbished science laboratory, specialist art, graphics and food technology rooms, a music suite with practice rooms, a library and two state of the art ICT suites.

Staffing: A good Pre-Reception will take pride in their commitment to recruiting the best staff and recognise the clear link between well-qualified enthusiastic staff and quality care.

Their Prep pupils enjoy an education that combines traditional teaching to lay firm foundations, a new creative curriculum to foster independent thinking and forest school activities that take learning into our natural surroundings.

Environment: Children should feel happy and confident in a stimulating and safe environment. The equipment should be of a good quality, clean and appropriate. Ethos: The ethos should indicate to parents what the values, beliefs and aims are of the setting. It should tell parents what principles the Pre-Reception is committed to and what atmosphere they aim to create. Partnership: Parents should have opportunities to be involved and to understand how their child is progressing. Regular parent evenings, dedicated parent notice boards and regular informal discussions will ensure a high level of feedback. Reputation: A good Pre-Reception should have a welcoming, friendly atmosphere and be known for its nurturing environment and stimulating curriculum. Admission into New Hall School starts from the age of 3 years old. To arrange a visit, contact the Admissions Department on 01245 236 098 or visit newhallschool.co.uk.

Prep School children join with Senior School students in whole school assemblies and events, as well as in Houses. The Prep School children learn from and look up to the Senior pupils who, in turn, respond admirably to the responsibility of setting a good example. Class sizes are kept to a maximum of twenty. This, along with a strong learning support department, extension activities for more able children and structured differentiation in lessons, allows the school to accommodate each individual child’s needs. In the year before they start school, children and their parents are invited to come along to regular sessions in the bright Reception class, to meet the experienced Early Years teachers and to familiarise themselves with the school. By the time they join St Mary’s, new pupils are comfortable in their surroundings and their teachers have already got to know and understand them. Many enjoy some time in the purpose-built Kindergarten in the school, which gives girls and boys aged rising-three to four years a flying start to education, with an emphasis on early reading and number skills, as well as dance, drama, art and outdoor sessions to build their confidence and social skills. There is a real emphasis on nurturing each individual at St Mary’s. Classes are small and each girl receives the help, support and encouragement she needs to achieve her academic potential. The results are excellent – SATs scores are among the best in the country, while GCSE results are consistently better than at any other independent school in north Essex. But school is not only about exam success at St Mary’s. Lessons are brought to life with trips, competitions and lively activities. Girls develop their artistic and creative talents and there are regular concerts, drama and dance productions, fashion shows and art displays. They’re also encouraged to be healthy and active - Lower School pupils enjoy gymnastics, swimming, tennis, forest school and even Indian dance and street jazz as well as all sorts of sports, while senior girls compete at a high local level in sports and can take part in exciting challenges such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and outdoor adventures. St Mary’s has a caring, happy and well-disciplined atmosphere and every girl is encouraged to play an active part in school life – girls take their work seriously but there’s also a lot of laughter and fun! St Mary’s autumn open days: Senior School (girls 11-16): Mon 13 Oct 10.30am-12pm, Thurs 16 Oct 1.30-3pm, Sat 18 Oct 12-3pm Lower School (girls 4-11): Thurs 6 Nov 9.30-11.30am Kindergarten Fun Open Morning (girls and boys 3-4): Sat 27 Sept 9.30-11.30am For more information, please visit www.stmaryscolchester.org.uk or telephone the registrar, Justine Tierney, on 01206 216420.

There is a superb new Junior School building, complete with dedicated Early Years facilities, which offers Friends’ youngest learners the best possible start. There is also a Forest School which is used by all sections of the school, from the youngest to the Biology A Level students for their fieldwork. Pastoral care at the school is excellent because the staff really get to know each pupil well and there is always a listening ear or a helping hand. The school also has a medical centre, staffed by two qualified nurses. The Good Schools Guide summed up the school when they said, “a calm, caring place for individuals who benefit from bespoke push, stretch and support.” See this in action on their Open Morning on 11th October. Minimally Invasive Dentistry Equals Modern Dentistry

White spot lesions on your teeth can be the beginning of cavities. They can be found on the front, back and sides of a tooth and are most noticeable when seen on the top front teeth, especially when smiling. White spot lesions are common in children, adults and patients who have worn fixed braces for a long time. The Dental Studio are pleased to introduce ICON, a revolutionary and clinically proven product which allows them to treat white spot lesions, and early tooth decay hidden between teeth, in a minimally invasive way without any need for drilling or anaesthetic. ICON treatment is a great way to get rid of unsightly white spots on teeth, stop cavities from progressing and save natural tooth structure. ICON’s micro-invasive infiltration technology bridges the gap between prevention and fillings. ICON is designed to treat early tooth decay that is contained in the outer third of a tooth – the E1 to D1 level. Your dentist will first need to examine your teeth to evaluate your suitability for ICON. If there are white spots on your teeth or clinical and radiographic signs of early decay then ICON may be right for you. The results of ICON treatment are often dramatic. White spots on the teeth virtually disappear and patients also love that treatment is completed in a single visit, about 15 minutes per tooth, without anesthesia or drilling. ICON is a patient friendly way to treat unwanted white spots and hidden early tooth decay helping return your teeth to optimum dental health, function and aesthetics. Please contact The Dental Studio on 01206 845891 to find out if ICON is suitable for your family!

Book Reviews by local children WENDY QUILL IS FULL UP OF WRONG Ever After High A Wonderful World Hardback £9.99 www.littlebrown.co.uk

I loved the first two books in the series, and I loved this one too. They are really cool books with beautiful coloured pages and there are a lot of characters with mad names so I do have to concentrate when I read them. The story is great because strange magic takes over the school. My favourite person is Lizzie Hearts. I can’t wait for the next book.

by Wendy Meddour and Mina May RRP: £5.99 Available from all good book stores Wendy Quill is a girl who gets things wrong sometimes but then always tries to put it right. This book is hilarious. The illustrations are really good all the way through and really help the story and they are all done by the author’s 11 year old daughter. The writing is a little tricky sometimes as she says things in funny ways and sometimes she invents her own words, so there were a few bits that I had to read twice to understand what she meant.

Ashlea and I read this book together. Ashlea loved the pictures and really enjoyed lifting all the flaps (which are thankfully quite sturdy) to find Mungo’s friends, his spider and all the other bugs in the story. Beautiful bright colours and fun illustrations which kept Ashlea focused on the book. There are lots of details to find and talk about with young children, a really nice book.
