BOOKS TO READ R EV IEWED BY LOCAL CHILDR EN

Dorrie and the Blue Witch by Patricia Coombs RRP £5.99 I was able to read this book myself. It had lots of lovely pictures. I enjoyed it. It was quick to read. It was about Dorrie, a girl whose mummy was a witch. She was visited by a bad blue witch. Dorrie captured the blue witch and put her in a bottle. The next day she got a golden cauldron for capturing her, and they had a party. My favourite character was Dorrie’s cat. He was cute. His name was Gink. Reviewed by Daisy Larkin aged 7

My Funny Family Gets Funnier by Chris Higgins RRP: £5.99

This book wasn’t one of my favourite books because I didn’t really understand it which made it a bit boring for me. I did like uncle vez though he was quite funny and mattie who loved hats because I like wearing funny hats. I felt sad when mattie had an ear infection but it made me happy that uncle vez was looking after her.

Have you Seen Elephant by David Barrow RRP £10.99 From the moment we opened this book Matilda was drawn in. Together we enjoyed exploring the pages and searching for the elephant ‘hidden’ in various places around the home. Matilda enjoyed this story so much that once we had read it once, she wanted to read it again and again. Each time we read the book, we found other characters and objects to discuss. A great book which can be extended through your own game of hide and seek!

The Anniversary edited by Veronica Henry (part of the Galaxy Light Read One for selection) RRP £1 adults Being a busy working mum often means having very little ‘me’ time. This is a great book for a busy mum, who may have 5 minutes when sitting down with a cuppa! Having a book of ten quick reads is great - meaning a sense of achievement once finishing each one. A great combination of stories which will appeal to all. From wartime tragedy to family dramas to tasty recipes! This book is a must read for those ‘on the go.’

Hamish and the Neverpeople by Danny Wallace RRP: £6.99 I found Hamish and the Neverpeople to be funny and a very good book. I hadn’t read the previous Hamish book but this didn’t seem to matter. This exciting story is about Hamish and his friends trying to defeat the Terribles and save King Les of the Other Earth from the evil character, Scarmarsh, who is trying to zap him to cause both of his halves to be blanked. The character names are fantastic and the story has very good descriptions. I would recommend this book to my friends and other children 9+ years old.

RRP: £6.99 We thought the book was great, loved the different names for the dinosaurs. Very funny trying to pronounce them! But a good story that Dexter was captivated by and understood. The illustration and colours were fun too

We sent our little reporters out again and look who they met

KidAround’s little reporters, Holly and Gracie, were invited along to the grand opening of Base Jump Trampoline Park in Rayleigh. They had the opportunity to meet with our very own Essex boys; Joey Essex and gold medallist trampolining star, Josh Newman. Here’s their report: “It was amazing meeting Joey and asking him about his ‘I’m Celebrity Get Me Out Here’ experience. Joey said “it was really tough”. We then got to have a nice chat with Josh and asked him some fun questions:” Holly & Gracie: How many double & triple jumps can you do? Josh: Earlier today I did 3 triple jumps and 7 double jumps Josh Holly & Gracie: Who’s your hero? gettin g rea dy to Josh: Outside of trampolining, it’s got to be Usain Bolt because of the amount of records he has jump from the h igh to set. He is amazing - a great role model. wer. Holly & Gracie: What’s the strangest food you have ever eaten? Josh: Hmmm, whilst in Australia I tried kangaroo - that was pretty strange. (Holly & Gracie giggle and pull a yucky face). Holly & Gracie: Whilst training do you have a strict diet? Josh: Yes, leading up to competitions it’s very strict and I have to cut out all fast food such as McDonalds, not that I eat much of it, but I do have to eat really healthily. Holly & Gracie: If you had a brainwashing machine who would you use it on? Josh: Ooooh, I think I would use it on my teachers at school, so they would think I have done all my work...chuckles all round! Interview ends. What they had to say about Base Jump: “What a fun and amazing place to go, we loved jumping off the high tower into the foam pit. Trampoline parks are a good way to keep kids fit too as you don’t stop jumping.” Thanks for inviting us. Schools Feature

Use this guide to give you information on schools in Essex Is your child starting school this year?

Here are some key questions you could ask when visiting prospective schools.

What’s the child-to-teacher ratio? Classes shouldn’t have more than 30 children. However, there are big differences between schools as to how many teaching assistants they have in each class.

How do they settle children? Sending your child off to school can be daunting, they seem so little. they be comforted if they fall over or fall out with friends?

How will

How do they support high and low achievers? Most children fall somewhere in the middle when they start school. How do the school support children who find learning challenging and also those who excel?

Are there School Dinners? Children in the first three years are currently entitled to free school meals. You could ask for a sample menu to see what sort of food is provided.

Are there morning and after school clubs? This can be important for working parents. Are there after school or breakfast clubs? What are the arrangements with local childcare providers? Do they collect from school?

How easy is it to meet with teachers? Is it possible to meet with your child’s teacher or headteacher at short notice if you have concerns or issues?

What is their approach to bullying? Hopefully this isn’t something that you will have to deal with. However, it might be useful to find out if their approach to dealing with occurrences is in line with what you think is appropriate.

Hutton Manor is awarded NACE Challenge Award

Hutton Manor School is the 355th school nationally to achieve the prestigious NACE Challenge Award for More Able, Gifted and Talented Pupils. This Award is given for high quality work by the whole school, teachers and governors, in challenging all pupils, including those with high abilities, to achieve their best. NACE Chief Executive Rowena Gaston said: “Hutton Manor has worked hard to win the NACE Challenge Award status. It has shown itself to be committed to developing a school where all pupils are challenged to be the best they can be. The more able and talented children are challenged and this helps the other learners to see what can be achieved.” The Award is given by NACE: the National Association for Able Children in Education, a leading national education organisation established for over 30 years. The Association exists to provide advice, training and resources for teachers, including the NACE Challenge Award SelfEvaluation Framework which Hutton Manor has used to audit and plan what it provides for more able, gifted and talented pupils. Many thousands of primary schools are using the NACE Challenge Award Framework to develop their work. Assessors judged the quality of the school’s work by observing lessons, interviewing the pupils, teachers, parents and governors and by looking at the pupils’ work. The Award is given when schools demonstrate that they meet the criteria of the Award and will are committed to continuing to ensure high-quality provision for more able, gifted and talented pupils. Hutton Manor School is holding an Open Day on Saturday 19th March 2016 from 10:00am – 1:00pm. SCHOOLS

New Hall School

New Hall School is a day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3-18 years. It is set in a stunning location, dominated by the former Tudor palace of Beaulieu – once owned by Henry VIII – and surrounded by an historic park and gardens. They believe that a New Hall education enables students to confidently meet the challenges of the world. There, students of different traditions are educated in an environment where academic excellence is achieved. This is brought about in surroundings where relationships are based on trust and respect. At New Hall they operate the highly successful ‘diamond model’ structure, that is, co-education in the Preparatory School (ages 3-11), single-sex education in the Boys’ Division and Girls’ Division (11-16) and co-education in the Sixth Form (16-18). In this way, New Hall provides the best of both worlds; the benefits of a coeducational environment, together with the advantages of girls and boys being taught separately at Key Stages 3 and 4. Within the Preparatory School, they offer a rich and varied curriculum within an environment where every child is known. Small class sizes of around 20 children, along with differentiated lessons and setting for Maths and English in Years 3 and 5 respectively, ensure that pupils are appropriately challenged and make exceptional progress. Wraparound care and an optional breakfast club offer peace of mind to busy parents who know their children are in a safe, caring and familiar setting. Go along and visit them to see for yourself why New Hall is such a great place to be educated. The next Open Morning is on Saturday 30 April and our Spring Fun Day is on Saturday 21 May. SCHOOLS “Outcomes for Children at Woodlands School are Outstanding”

Staff and parents are celebrating this week at Woodlands School and Little Acorns Nursery after achieving a superb ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ inspection report. The school and nursery based in Great Warley, Brentwood were inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in December 2015. A team of inspectors spent two days at the school and immersed themselves into busy school life. They interviewed pupils, parents and staff and in conversations with inspectors, parents described the communication at the school as “amazing”, and every parent indicated that they would recommend the setting to other parents. The school’s end-of-inspection report included the following highlights: • Outcomes for children are outstanding. • The quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding. • The personal development, behaviour and welfare of the children are outstanding. • All children make good and consistent progress. • The close-knit supportive community helps children feel secure and happy. As a result their personal and emotional development is excellent. • Children’s behaviour is exemplary. They are polite and considerate to others, spontaneously congratulate each other on the successful completion of an activity. • Evaluation of the educational programmes, including the quality of teaching, learning and assessment is highly effective. • Teachers know the children in their care extremely well and understand how they learn. Head Teacher, Katharine Mansfield commented; “We are delighted with our recent inspection report. Staff are to be congratulated for their dedication to pupils, excellent pastoral care and commitment to the success of our pupils.” Woodlands School, Great Warley are holding an Open Day on Saturday 5th March 2016 from 10:00am – 1:00pm. Ormiston Rivers Academy

Ormiston Rivers Academy is a unique 11-18 co-educational academy which is delighted to be working in close partnership with the Ormiston Trust family of academies. Being smaller than other local secondary education providers means they are able to focus on every student’s achievement and well-being, much like a close family. They want the best for their youngsters and will seek new and diverse ways of achieving this for each individual child. This has proved to be very successful in enabling students to meet their goals. All Ormiston academies share the OAT ethos of: ensuring every child reaches their full potential: being aspirational and committed to academic excellence and being supportive yet courageous in its approach. They were delighted to be identified by Ofsted as a “Good” school in July 2013. Since then the Academy has continued to grow and in 2014 received an award in recognition of being in the top 10% of schools nationally for value-added, an accreditation that has been maintained. They truly endeavour to ensure that the experience of learning with them is positive, and encourages a lifelong enthusiasm for learning in all their students. They are also proud to be an integral part of the local and wider community and enjoy the opportunities this affords their youngsters for extended activities and “real” citizenship. Their 2015 results confirmed their continual improvement, with record numbers of students achieving 5+ A*-C grades (including English & Mathematics) at GCSE or equivalent. Developed by Vicki Scott, Midwife and Parenting Expert 1. If you have problems with low milk supply, or have twins then it can be difficult to meet your baby’s demands. Seek help from a breastfeeding advisor to help get your milk supply up, but as an alternative supplementing your baby’s breastfeeds may be necessary. Using some formula milk does not mean the end of breastfeeding, it is quite possible to do both and continue to give baby the benefits of your milk. 2. In the early months it is a good idea, and sometimes necessary, to express milk at the same time you are giving your baby a bottle. This is to prevent engorgement and to protect your milk supply. 3. Having all of your feeding equipment ready in advance makes things much easier. Breast pumps, milk storage containers and bottles can all be sterilized in advance, assembled and ready to go for up to 24 hours before being sterilized again for the next use. 4. It is important to correctly sterilize all your baby’s milk feeding equipment to reduce the risk of milk bacteria related tummy bugs or gastroenteritis. Before each use wash all pieces separately using a separate brush, rinse in clean water and sterilize. Steam sterilization is easy and efficient. 5. Your breastmilk can be frozen, which makes having a supply of milk ready to use much easier. Express straight into a breastmilk storage container and once the milk has cooled it can then be frozen and stored for up to 3 months in your home freezer. 6. Always keep breastmilk chilled until your baby is ready to feed, then warm it to body temperature by using a bottle warmer or standing the container in warm water. Take a small flask of warm water if you are out & about and carry milk in a ThermaBag to keep it cool. 7. Be sure to use the correct teat size for your baby’s needs. If the teat is too slow your baby may become bored or frustrated during his feeds. A teat which is too fast may mean your baby struggles to keep up with the flow of milk, taking in a lot of air as he gulps. The flow should be steady and your baby relaxed during the feed. 8. If your baby is having a bottle feed then it is a lovely opportunity for dad, or another family member to be involved. Of course bonding happens in many ways but feeding is a very nurturing and special way to interact with baby. 9. When bottle feeding, hold your baby close in a more upright position than you might for a breastfeed. Hold the bottle at an angle which keeps the teat full of milk, and your baby’s head in a slightly backward tilt so that he can feed comfortably. He will be looking at you intently as you feed him so enjoy this special nurturing time. 10. When taking a bottle some babies are good at knowing when they need to burp and will push the bottle away with their tongue, or with their hands if they are older! Other babies keep drinking and then are sick so you may need to stop your baby at times during the feed to sit up for a burp.

To help you get the most out of breastfeeding, we are giving away an Avent Single Electric Breast Pump worth £115. To be in with a chance please email your name, address, and contact number to: comps@kidaround.biz or visit us online at www.kidaround.biz For more information about the Avent
