St Helena Hospice’s Bubble Rush event is back once again by popular demand.

Join hundreds of others on 11th June at Colchester’s High Woods Country Park from 12pm, and get covered in bubbles for a good cause! The hospice is giving you the chance to be a big kid again, so bring friends and family along for a messy, fun, colourful day out. You will run or walk through walls of foamy bubbles on the 5km route and get blasted by giant bubble cannons along the way! The event is open to all ages, and wheelchairs and buggies can be taken with you. Spectators can also go along to watch you get bubbly for charity. Carla took part in last year’s event and says: “We all loved going through each set of bubbles – that was the best part, and the children loved trying to guess what the next colour would be. We’re definitely taking part again this year as we had so much fun last time!” Registration is open until 10th June at 10am. Sign up now at sthelenahospice.org.uk/bubble16. This year the hospice has introduced a new family rate so as many people as possible can join in the fun. There is no minimum sponsorship amount but the hospice is asking that participants raise money to help support the work it does in the local community. It costs the hospice £8.7 million a year to provide its services for free, which include support for those coping with life-limiting illnesses and people dealing with the death of a loved one. Donating money through sponsorship can make a real difference to people’s lives across North East Essex. By raising just £20 you could pay for four memory books for children to use in order to remember a special person. They had the opportunity to meet with our very own Essex boys; Joey Essex and gold medallist trampolining star, Josh Newman. Here’s their report: “It was amazing meeting Joey and asking him about his ‘I’m Celebrity Get Me Out Here’ experience. Joey said “it was really tough”. We then got to have a nice chat with Josh and asked him some fun questions:” Holly & Gracie: How many double & triple jumps can you do? Josh: Earlier today I did 3 triple jumps and 7 double jumps Holly & Gracie: Who’s your hero? Josh gettin g rea dy to Josh: Outside of trampolining, it’s got to be Usain Bolt because of the amount of jump from the h records he has set. He is amazing - a great igh to wer. role model. Holly & Gracie: What’s the strangest food you have ever eaten? Josh: Hmmm, whilst in Australia I tried kangaroo - that was pretty strange. (Holly & Gracie giggle and pull a yucky face). Holly & Gracie: Whilst training do you have a strict diet? Josh: Yes, leading up to competitions it’s very strict and I have to cut out all fast food such as McDonalds, not that I eat much of it, but I do have to eat really healthily. Holly & Gracie: If you had a brainwashing machine who would you use it on? Josh: Ooooh, I think I would use it on my teachers at school, so they would think I have done all my work... chuckles all round! Interview ends.

Holly & Gracie happy having photo with Josh Newman All have socks on ready to jump!

What they had to say about Base Jump: “What a fun and amazing place to go, we loved jumping off the high tower into the foam pit. Trampoline parks are a good way to keep kids fit too as you don’t stop jumping.” Thanks for inviting us. Holly Ellison & Gracie Hurley

The Longest Easter Egg Hunt in Essex?

The Epping Ongar Railway is a fantastic, great value and accessible day out for the family. A day out with the Epping Ongar Railway will give you the chance to explore train and bus travel as it was years ago with a beatutiful backdrop of the ancient woodlands of Epping Forest and Essex countryside – mostly from the comfort of a train seat with a large window! Trains run between Ongar, North Weald and Epping Forest, whilst the buses will pick up from right outside Epping Underground and Shenfield Stations. The Railway hosts events throughout the year including probably the longest Easter Egg Hunt in Essex which stretches the length of roughly 131,579 eggs laid end to end! See website www.eorailway.co.uk for details of all events, fares and timetables.

Easter fun at Poplar Miniature Railways Now in its third season of operations, the Poplar Miniature Railway at Poplar Nurseries in Marks Tey has proved to be a smash hit with parents and kids alike. Designed from the outset to appeal to parents with young children, real coal powered steam engines pull trains through the delightful landscaped gardens, past such endearingly named features as Orchard Curve, Folly Bank and Cottage Crossing. The children love to look out for the animals along the route, including the giraffe, crocodile, bear and cow, although new animals regularly turn up to see the train pass by. Whilst the little ones enjoy the railway and play area, parents can relax and enjoy the justifiably popular Thyme Out restaurant and other attractions at the garden centre. With over 100,000 people carried by the railway since opening in 2014, the railway is expanding to carry even more passengers on the trains and now has three steam engines in regular service. The railway is open every weekend and school holiday this year except for Easter Sunday. In addition, from Easter onwards the railway will open on Wednesdays and Fridays during the school term time. The Nursery holds regular children’s activities, including the free to enter. Easter Egg Hunt, where every child receives a free Easter gift. This runs from Saturday 26th March until Sunday 10th April. Under fours travel free when accompanied by a fare paying person and discount cards are available all year round. If you are looking for somewhere new to take the tribe, and have not yet met Poppy, Yeo or Alice, come along to Poplar and find out what all the fuss is about. BOOKS TO READ R EV IEWED BY LOCAL CHILDR EN

Dorrie and the Blue Witch by Patricia Coombs RRP £5.99 I was able to read this book myself. It had lots of lovely pictures. I enjoyed it. It was quick to read. It was about Dorrie, a girl whose mummy was a witch. She was visited by a bad blue witch. Dorrie captured the blue witch and put her in a bottle. The next day she got a golden cauldron for capturing her, and they had a party. My favourite character was Dorrie’s cat. He was cute. His name was Gink. Reviewed by Daisy Larkin aged 7

My Funny Family Gets Funnier by Chris Higgins RRP: £5.99

This book wasn’t one of my favourite books because I didn’t really understand it which made it a bit boring for me. I did like uncle vez though he was quite funny and mattie who loved hats because I like wearing funny hats. I felt sad when mattie had an ear infection but it made me happy that uncle vez was looking after her.

Have you Seen Elephant by David Barrow RRP £10.99 From the moment we opened this book Matilda was drawn in. Together we enjoyed exploring the pages and searching for the elephant ‘hidden’ in various places around the home. Matilda enjoyed this story so much that once we had read it once, she wanted to read it again and again. Each time we read the book, we found other characters and objects to discuss. A great book which can be extended through your own game of hide and seek!

The Anniversary edited by Veronica Henry (part of the Galaxy Light Read One for selection) RRP £1 adults Being a busy working mum often means having very little ‘me’ time. This is a great book for a busy mum, who may have 5 minutes when sitting down with a cuppa! Having a book of ten quick reads is great - meaning a sense of achievement once finishing each one. A great combij1nation of stories which will appeal to all. From wartime tragedy to family dramas to tasty recipes! This book is a must read for those ‘on the go.’

Hamish and the Neverpeople by Danny Wallace RRP: £6.99 I found Hamish and the Neverpeople to be funny and a very good book. I hadn’t read the previous Hamish book but this didn’t seem to matter. This exciting story is about Hamish and his friends trying to defeat the Terribles and save King Les of the Other Earth from the evil character, Scarmarsh, who is trying to zap him to cause both of his halves to be blanked. The character names are fantastic and the story has very good descriptions. I would recommend this book to my friends and other children 9+ years old.

RRP: £6.99 We thought the book was great, loved the different names for the dinosaurs. Very funny trying to pronounce them! But a good story that Dexter was captivated by and understood. The illustration and colours were fun too

Schools Feature

Use this guide to give you information on schools in Essex Is your child starting school this year?

Here are some key questions you could ask when visiting prospective schools.

What’s the child-to-teacher ratio? Classes shouldn’t have more than 30 children. However, there are big differences between schools as to how many teaching assistants they have in each class.

How do they settle children? Sending your child off to school can be daunting, they seem so little. they be comforted if they fall over or fall out with friends?

How will

How do they support high and low achievers? Most children fall somewhere in the middle when they start school. How do the school support children who find learning challenging and also those who excel?

Are there School Dinners? Children in the first three years are currently entitled to free school meals. You could ask for a sample menu to see what sort of food is provided.

Are there morning and after school clubs? This can be important for working parents. Are there after school or breakfast clubs? What are the arrangements with local childcare providers? Do they collect from school?

How easy is it to meet with teachers? Is it possible to meet with your child’s teacher or headteacher at short notice if you have concerns or issues?

What is their approach to bullying? Hopefully this isn’t something that you will have to deal with. However, it might be useful to find out if their approach to dealing with occurrences is in line with what you think is appropriate.

New Hall School

New Hall School is a day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3-18 years. It is set in a stunning location, dominated by the former Tudor palace of Beaulieu – once owned by Henry VIII – and surrounded by an historic park and gardens. They believe that a New Hall education enables students to confidently meet the challenges of the world. There, students of different traditions are educated in an environment where academic excellence is achieved. This is brought about in surroundings where relationships are based on trust and respect. At New Hall they operate the highly successful ‘diamond model’ structure, that is, co-education in the Preparatory School (ages 3-11), single-sex education in the Boys’ Division and Girls’ Division (11-16) and co-education in the Sixth Form (16-18). In this way, New Hall provides the best of both worlds; the benefits of a coeducational environment, together with the advantages of girls and boys being taught separately at Key Stages 3 and 4. Within the Preparatory School, they offer a rich and varied curriculum within an environment where every child is known. Small class sizes of around 20 children, along with differentiated lessons and setting for Maths and English in Years 3 and 5 respectively, ensure that pupils are appropriately challenged and make exceptional progress. Wraparound care and an optional breakfast club offer peace of mind to busy parents who know their children are in a safe, caring and familiar setting. Go along and visit them to see for yourself why New Hall is such a great place to be educated. The next Open Morning is on Saturday 30 April and our Spring Fun Day is on Saturday 21 May. See www.newhallschool.co.uk for details.

Walk to School Week 16th – 22nd May 2016 Walk to School Week is organised by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking. It challenges schools and their pupils to walk to school more during the week. It’s a great way to celebrate walking and can be a stepping stone to yearround activity. The campaign has been running for over 20 years. The fundraising element of Walk to School Week takes place on Tuesday 17 May, or ‘Happy Shoesday’. In participating schools the children and teachers wear the shoes that make them the happiest and donate £1. Money raised will go to Living Streets for work with schools, disability groups and local communities, and campaigning work to make UK streets safer for everyone. Why not see if your children’s school would be interested in getting involved. They should contact Living Streets for more information and for resource packs: 020 7456 9794. David Graham of Living Streets said: “Walking to school is a free and easy way for children to build exercise into their day. Physically active children are more alert, ready to learn and achieve better grades than those who are driven. “The majority of children are not getting their recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise. At Living Streets, we know that encouraging more children to walk to school is one of the best places to start to tackle this inactivity. “Walk to School Week is a really effective way of encouraging families to swap four wheels for two feet. I’d encourage anyone to get involved and take part in something great.” For more information on Walk to School Week see www.walktoschool.org.uk

Felsted Pupils Challenged at Highest Levels

Felsted Preparatory School has been credited for the second time with the NACE Challenge Award for excellence in provision for Able, Gifted and Talented Pupils. Reaccreditation of this Award is given for sustaining high quality work by the whole school in challenging all pupils, including those with high abilities, to achieve their best. NACE comment that Felsted Preparatory School had shown itself “to be committed to developing a school where all pupils are challenged to be the best they can be. The more able and talented children are challenged and this helps the other learners to see what can be achieved.” One of the key aims at Felsted is to differentiate effectively for the individual, providing just the right level of support and challenge. The whole school, including staff, pupils and parents work hard to realise this aim. Mrs Christina Bury, Director of Learning and teacher in charge of Very Able Pupils commented “We are delighted that our provision for our very able pupils is once again deemed to be ‘excellent’. The NACE assessors celebrated the outstanding extension programmes in all subject areas which provide pupils with challenging, creative and innovative opportunities. Our subject specialist teachers have the knowledge and expertise to enable the children to achieve and excel at the highest levels.” This academic excellence pathway extends through to the Senior School, where 50% of all GCSEs taken in 2015 achieved an A* or A grade. SCHOOLS The best beginning for your child’s education at Ipswich Prep School

It can be an exciting but somewhat daunting time: the start of your child’s first school years, and making the right decision on the best learning environment for them. Head of Ipswich Prep, Amanda Childs, believes that ensuring all pupils are happy at the school is undoubtedly her most important role. She said: “One of the main ways we achieve this is that we care about the pupils and give every single one the opportunity to be their best. All the staff here have a passion for teaching and for sharing their passions in other areas as well, and passing on this enthusiasm nurtures potential and really does help ensure we have happy people here.” Mrs Childs added that education is about forging foundations so that children develop a desire for lifelong learning. “The Prep School is all about encouraging children to do well at school, to enjoy their learning and to grow in themselves, from the youngest girls and boys in the nursery, through to the oldest pupils in Year 6, and then continuing their journey in the Senior School next door.” Ipswich Prep School has outstanding purpose-built facilities and also enjoys the use of extensive sporting facilities, green fields and drama venues offered by Ipswich School’s Senior School. Class sizes are small and pupils’ learning areas are challenging and fun, with a wide range of co-curricular activities to choose from – including clubs such as sewing, cooking, percussion and skiing. The school prides itself on having a caring school community with an exemplary approach to pastoral care. You can follow Amanda Childs on Twitter: @IpswichPrepHead. Fun And Easy Party Food Ideas

Fruit kebabs look fantastic, especially when arranged in rainbow stripes. We have made these several times at children’s parties and there are never any left. Use bamboo bbq skewers and any fruit that you like. We usually cut the sharp

tip off before serving. Another great idea for skewers is to put all the ingredients for sandwiches on them. You can use cookie cutters to make all sorts of shapes with the bread and cheese.

Pinwheel sandwiches always look impressive and you usually end up with far fewer leftovers. To make pinwheels lay out your slice of bread, remove the crusts and then use a rolling pin to gently flatten the bread. Put on your chosen toppings, nothing too lumpy, and then roll up. Wrap in cling film until they are needed and then slice. An alternative to the pinwheel sandwich is the choconana wrap. Cover a wrap in Nutella (or other chocolate spread if you are avoiding nuts which is probabaly a good idea at a big party) Put a banana in the middle and then roll the wrap around it. Wrap it until ready to serve (don’t leave it too long) and then slice. Delicious! Covering or dipping anything in chocolate is generally a winner. How about filling spoons with melted chocolate and sprinkles of glitter. Maybe you could dip marshmallows, breadsticks, bananas or strawberries in chocolate and add whatever decoration goes with your theme. You can involve the children in making these. www.kidaround.biz • Spring 16 • North Essex • 41

Colchester High School - Colchester’s only

independent school for girls and boys from 2½ to 18 years. The Nursery is open all year round and provides the children with an extremely safe and happy start to their education while also developing them socially, emotionally and physically. The Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation stage supplemented with specialist teaching in PE, Music, French and ICT and classes in the Read Write Inc Programme as part of the standard Nursery Provision. The School provides a caring, friendly and happy environment with small class sizes, experienced and professional teachers and an individualised learning program to ensure that each child achieves their full potential. Well-planned, well-paced lessons, based on clear and precise learning objectives are shared with the pupils. Children are encouraged to think aloud, explaining and questioning their work and developing their own learning skills. In addition to ensuring academic excellence, Colchester High School firmly believes in the importance of developing the whole child. They therefore offer a varied and challenging extra-curricular programme of activities and experiences to try to encourage all pupils to try a new sport, learn new skills or contribute to school life, thereby building confidence, well-being and creativity. The Sixth Form offers students a personalised programme of study which has been tailored according to their individual needs and aspirations. Small class sizes, strong pastoral support and a rich and varied enrichment programme all help ensure academic success at A Level and that students are prepared for University or the workplace. Scholarships are available for entry into Year 7 of our Senior School and the Sixth Form. For more information or to arrange a visit, please visit www.colchesterhighschool.co.uk or contact admissions on 01206 217116.
