But I seem to have a knack for finding ered log cabin, opened the front door to see old homesteads, gold claims and trapper the old red lantern that hung from the log cabins. These picture-perfect log cabins loft above the old stove, that is until last have all had one thing in common. The time I visited. note pinned to the front door congratulating Late one afternoon after visiting the Crowfoot lookout, we decided to head down the back of the mountain, a way I had never gone before. It wasn’t long before the trail began to narrow, and it was clear that we were the first in a very long time to venture down this path. As the trees widened and the trail narrowed, the sound of the branches giving the rigs a good old dose of BC pin striping was all that we could hear. For those unfamiliar with the term, it means scratching your paint to a level that won’t buff out. As I ploughed through the overgrowth, a chainsaw and machete were going to work behind me making more room for the other rigs to follow. We finally popped out and as I looked to regain my bearings, a familiar landmark was visible. We were only moments away from the entrance to the cabin trail. I showed the group the nearby waterfall first and told everyone about what they were about to see. In single file our rigs made their way down the soggy trail to the landing before the cabin.

From there we continued on foot. As I rounded the corner to point out the cabin, an unwelcome surprise lay instead. The burnt, black perimeter of where a cabin used to be. Charred metals and the old stove were all that stood and there in the middle where it used to hang, the burnt red lantern lay. From a dozen years in the fire service and standing beside three other firefighters, two of which are career Kamloops firefighters, we could all agree that the cabin likely burnt when snow was present. The trees were blackened but did not burn, the fire hot enough to burn the big timbers of the cabin to nothing more than ash but stay contained to the structure without any spread. And just like that, I became one of the lucky ones to have seen the cabin that others will now only read about in stories.
