W Take yourself back in memory or imagi-nation to 1918,when on a November :day the 1st World Nar ended with thesigning of The Armistice 60 yearsls a long time to look back on Buton remembering, our older friends opened windows on a way of 1ife that today seems Very remote and fascin a -ting . Mr Cyril Cox of Tur Langton remembers Armistice Day very well1 He was working as a ploughboy ,walking beside the three horses whilst the farmer followed the plough. They heard fac-
tory hooters and church bells across the fields _to mark the end of that bitter war But the loss of many met: abroad had beertmuchmore poignant by a flu epidemic that had swept away many members of the families at home . Mr Cox started work at the age of 12 , his mother had been left a widow with 8 children and his earnings of 3/\15p) a week helped to keep them and his work included rushing around with a clapper board to scare the Crows from the cornfield at harvest time : STATION KOAD, KIBWORTH

by Colin Tory When this incredible Indian Summer finally ends and more seasonal weathe sets in the annual invasion of our homes is liable to begin The long tailed field mouse,o0r woodmouse to 8glive it its other name ,Wil11 forsake the fields and head for warmer duarters. He s really quite a handsome fellow; a warm brown above which contrasts with his white underside A completely different animal to the more familiar house-mouse This 1atter Pest,a dull grey-brown all ovef , s dependent upon man.Despite this depen dence he has been with us in this country for 500 years and has adapted to a range of manmade environments . They can even exist in cold stores , Pafticularl1y those used for meat The fat on the carcases provides a ready source of heat producing energy and the cloth used to wrap the meat makes excellent bedding: They re even adapted to the extent of growing 1onger Coats . A different proposition is the diminutive harvest-mouse 0nce thought to be rare,it has in recent years been found in virtually every suitable Location . It s simply a matter of people looking hard enough Now is the time to 1ook for its nest,a ball of grasses varying in size from that of a golf ball to is that of a shredded cricket along its ball The grass length into strips 1-2 mm wide and the ball is inside the group of supporting s tems , they don t pass through the nest as in the case of birds It is 1iable to be about half the way up the stems which can be of cereals ,reeds or 8rasSes So off you go,to any area of tallish grass, reeds or hedge, and search who s going to be the first eVer to locate a harvestmouse in the Kibworth area2
