It can alsoy; of course,be a very lonely time for those of us who have no family or close friends and whose isolation seems so much harder to bear at this particular season.
However, can we not recapture a 1Iittle of that wonderful feeling of excitement and anticipation we once experienced when we see the children in their Nativity playS,o0r the Look of wonder on their faces as the Christmas tree 1ights are turned on or when they catch their first glimpse of Santa Claus in his grotto And somehow making that 1ast batch of mince pies doesn t seem quite such a chore when we can rol1 the pastry out whilst 1istening to the voices of the King s College Chapel raised in the dear, familiar carols.
Above all,Christmas is a time for fellowship . It is a time to go to parties,to carol services and to send each other Christmas cards and gifts as gestures of friendship.
Since I have been a resident of Kibworth, I have found 1ate-night shopping to be a very pleasant experience. This year it wil11 take place on Tuesday,19th December, and the shops will1 be open until 8.30pm. So why not leave the car behind for once and walk down into the vi11age to see your friends and neighbours? Enjoy a comp1l1imentary glass of wine or a mince pie in the shops and exchange good wishes for Christmas ,while you are looking for those 1ast few gifts. Listen to the Kibworth Band and support their collection forhampers for the elderly in the vi11-age and maybe join in with the sing -ingl
And,finally,1let us all look across the fields at the back of Kibworth Harcourt where once more the i1luminated sails of the post mil1 will1 be 1ighting up the night sky for the 12 days of Christmas a constant and beautiful reminder of the true meaning of this season hnd s 1 true2 _4pnd s It Erue, Lhis most tremenadaous ta1e o a17 , seen n a stained-~g1ass Window s hue a baby 10 an 0x s Sta11 7 The o the stars and sea become a on earth for me 7 John Betjeman 7

Dear Editor Campaigners for an A6 pelican crossing in Kibworth are very grateful to the 500 people who signed the petition and the 130 Harcourt households who filled in our questionnaire. The matter was raised by County Councillor Mr. John Waite at a meeting of the County Highways and Transportation Committee on 9th November and invyestigators are to send a report to the Department of Transport, who have the final say
But beware! The report also inc1ludes plans to make a third lane for cars turning right into Church Road This would further speed up traffic; a pelican crossing would not only help pedestrians but would also provide some breaks in traffic to enable cars to cross from Marsh Drive. If not,the inevitable result wil1 be even more accidents at this junction. How long will1 it be before one of these causes serious injuries?
A new survey shows that we stil1 do not meet the criteria for a cCrossing . But official statistics are only a guideline; they do,however, put the onus on Villagers to prove the need for a crossing. We can take heart from villagers in another part of Leicestershire who have been conducting a similar campaign. They have just won approval for a cCrossing although they do not meet the Criteria 0ur questionnaires showed a hidden demand in Kibworth; pedestrians could increase by up to 50 per cent with a Crossing The 89 elderly people and 58 schoolchildren on the Harcourt side are effectively cut off from the facilities in Beauchamp: shops, schools, doctors surgeries , Clubs etc 0ur parish counCils, both district councillors and our county councillor haye all written in support: Even if you signed petition, please write to:

Dear Editor Following our successful planning application to convert the 01d Schoo1 at 2 Station Street into a new surgery,we would 1ike to thank al1 our patients and many others who have supported us in our recent campaign.
The Planning Department at Harborough
District Council received nearly 300 letters of support from 1ocal peop1le, and also a petition with 1,200 signatures helped our Ccampaign.
Without the support of the local population this project would have been further delayed and it is certainly possible it might even have been cancelled.
We are extremely grateful to al1 the many patientsy friends and members of the local community who gave us their support. Drs. Bell,Corbett,Wilson and Kilpatrick. j AXN Editor s Note s E The Planning Department of Harborough District Council usually replies to everyone who has written commenting on a planning application notifying them of the outCome of the decision. In the case 2
D of Dr Bell and partners new surgery application, almost 300 letters were received together with two petitions of 1267_names supporting the new surgery. In view of the wide circulation of the Chronicle in the area,we have been asked to say that the Counci1l do not intend to notify everyone of the decision in this particular instance but anyone who wishes to inquire about further details can of course contact the Planning Department direct. : . TALKING CHRONICLE 0ur know a readers 1ittle may more be interested to about the TalkingChronicle and how it is organised When a new issue of the Chronicle is received,my wife Jackie, and Itelephone the readers on my 1ist and arrange a convenient time for them to come to my house for a reading session. The recording equipment was provided via the Institute for the B1Lind in Gedding Road,Leicester , from funds donated by the Chronic1le. The Institute also provide the cassette players, which they wi11 repair Or replace as necessary . The recorder produces a master tape which is sent off to Gedding Road, from which mini cassettes. are produced. These are sent to Miss Eileen Bromley who distributes them to blind and partially-sighted people and collects the previous recording . We have some feedback from Miss Bromley about our 1isteners,who seem to look forward to receivying their Cassettes In the 0ctober edition of the Chronicle we appealed for more readers and three people volunteered, including one man. Al1 of the readers, apart from myself are women. This is fine but we feel that a wide variety of voices makes for more interesting 1istening. Each person reads as much as they 1ike,usually about two pages, My wife and I fee1 that the Talking Chroniclie is a very worthwhile project and, although it benefits a relative1y small number of people (about 13) those people probably appreciate the effort more than most Denis Shorley PUDDING ON THE RITZ! The three course luncheon was prepared and served by members of the Kibworth branch of Cancer Research in St, Wilfrid s Church Hall on Wednesday November 15th. After 1unch,Mrs Elizabeth Marlow of the Regional Cancer Research Comm-ittee spoke of the resources needed tfight the killer disease and how Cancer Research spends 95p of every 1 donated directly on research. Says Muriel Lyon, chairperson of the Kibworth committee : The event was such a success we hope to repeat it next It makes a change for people to come outand be served a proper three coursemeal (including some wicked puddings!)and have a glass of wine in civi1isedsurroundings - while raising money atthe same time .
