Podulating House Pods+Circulation The concept of the podulating house all started with the constraints of the clients and the historic wall. These constraints pushed the beginning of my design. The wall acted as an interruption as well as a means of separating both the artist and writer spaces on different sides of the house. Then by using the given opening as their connection to one another and also the only source of circulation from one side to the next. The doorway opening in the wall is the primary circulation and the secondary circulation would be the circulation around the interior pods. The exterior walls are mostly made of louvers which are driven by both ventilation and the direction of the sun in a dry climate.

Brooklyn College Kinetic Gallery

The idea behind this art gallery for Brooklyn College was to create a new space that can draw all types of individuals from different academic disciplines on and off campus into this art space by creating an interactive environment. The form on the outside would appeal to the viewers on the outside and intrigue their interest enough for them to come in. The concept behind this design is to shift perspective view while the viewer walks through. The transition from a darker room to a fully lit space helps to also create this experience of going from darkness to the light at the end of th tunnel. The light always in view at the end but also an objective. You the viewer will feel as you are chasing the light.

Tunnel House

The whole concept the led to the Tunnel House was driven by having an enclosed space and an open space. By compartmentalizing those spaces into the programmatic functions of a beach house in Maui, Hawaii and the use of passive design this house is formed. It is a simple beach house and built in the most efficient way. The fins are both a design element and help block the sun from directly hitting the house inner core. Another grat element of the house is its illumination during the night hours.

INGRESS

After the demographical research on how people live in New York City today we knew exactly how we were going to approach this housing studio and answering the question Housing: What’s Missing? Our research specifically focused on immigrants and from that information we could see the transition of other groups as well. Ultimately, there is a significant amount of exclusion of immigrants today, a lack of housing geared toward them. Our idea was to address this exclusion and grant an admittance, an entry with our project. Our housing project is called IngRess: Intergenerational Housing for IMMIGRANTS & REFUGEES. There were 4 main elements we wanted to focus on: 1) Housing for immigrants and refugees, 2) Bridging a public green space from Tappen Court to Canal St., 3) Creating a focal point on our site that associates with the existing main buildings in the Stapleton, SI area (Library, Historic Bank, and Village Hall) and 4) Creating a community within the housing and in the area. Through bridging the green public space from Tappen Ct. to Canal St. it permitted us to proceed without the 30’ set back required by R6-B zoning laws for Staten Island. By establishing our public space and access our building block was divided into 3 areas we allotted for housing. This allowed for us to explored three different typologies: The Stacked Flat type, the Side Yard House type, and the Villa type. Each typology operates differently in how it is experienced by the inhabitant but all promote, create community living through shared spaces. This is the type of housing we believe is missing in NYC.

Reimagining the Procession As the Hamilton Heights neighborhood becomes more diverse, causing a decline in the member following of a number of primarily African-American churches. This forces these congregations to close their doors, and in many instances to sell the property. This prompted the projects aim to find a way to readapt and reuse the neglected St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Harlem for community usage but at the same time find a way for it to make some sort of income. The challenge lies in finding a balance in the design between the existing and an entirely new program. The program is broken down to 3: st Luke’s church, community involvement, and Active spaces. St. Luke’s Episcopal will act as a community hub for the changing neighborhood to come together, have fun, and get active. The spaces will consist of a roller rink, basket ball court, and volleyball court. the design lies in connecting through old and new construction, access and interaction, and lastly still functioning as multi-worship and event space. This will allow St. Lukes to remain a staple in the Hamilton Heights Neighborhood in Harlem, New York.
