“With 134 beds, that is a loss of nearly $100k per week,” says Cllr Brown.

“I am disturbed that the situation is worse than we thought and believe the public have a right to know,” he says.

One measure that was brought home to councillors (that was reported in the Fi nance Advisory Committee’s August Minutes but over looked by some including this paper) is that in July Blue Haven Residential Aged Care Facility was losing $119 per bed per day, compared to the average bottom 25% of the industry benchmark survey showing a loss of $24 per

“With financial transac tions of this magnitude it’s always best to be thorough, and it takes time to do that. It’s time well spent,” says Mayor Neil Reilly.

“I think the community has a right to know what the councillors took away from it.”

Mayor Neil Reilly says he is surprised that Cllr Brown has shared what he learnt.

Cllr Brown says the meet ing wasn’t confidential, and the information the presenta tion by KPMG was based on is publicly available.

Fellow councillors were sur prised when Councillor Matt Brown spoke publicly about what was discussed in the first financial workshop held to assist their understanding of Council’s financial situation.

Brown shares details from financial briefing

“All councillors looked shocked. We didn’t know we were using general ratepay ers’ funds to pay the electric ity for Blue Haven, we didn’t know that Blue Haven didn’t contribute to rates, and we found out that we are not a going concern as a Council. They were the exact words.

Having resolved the legal issues raised after the tender winner was announced on 28 June, Kiama Council has announced that it signed the contract to sell the property to the Level 33 Property Group last week.

The Gerringong Volcanics constitute the oldest onshore preserved record of volcanic sediment which flowed into the Sydney Basin from a series of volcanic eruptions off our coast.

There are three rock types in Kiama: the Kiama sand stone, which is part of the Sydney Basin; Bombo Latite, which are the basalt columns found in the quarry; and the Blowhole basalt which came through later, around 57 million years ago.

The small change deposit ed by members of the public has been collected by Kiama Friends of Vision Australia to add to their fund raising over the years. The group has been going for nearly 60 years. It was originally called The Kiama and District Royal Blind Society Auxiliary and was formed when the Mayor of Kiama convened a public meeting on 30 April 1963 at the request of The Royal Blind Society.

At the beginning the aim was not fund raising, but to be a service to blind people in the district. In the early years the Auxiliary did assist and visit a lot of people in the local area who were blind or visionHoweverimpaired.inrecent years, fund raising has been the primary focus. Street stalls, afternoon teas, raffles, golf days, themed dinner dances and Bunnings BBQs have been held and since 1995 (the only records we have), over $180,000 has been passed on to Vision Australia which changed to this name

Basically, money raised since 2020 has been only from donations by individu als and Kiama Lions Club. Alyson: At Kiama and Jamberoo Cemeteries, most of our burials and ash placements are for people who have purchased and/or reserved in advance.

Team player

Our team handles enquiries and bookings for plots, niches and burials, updating records in cemeteries as well as opening and closing of the graves and maintaining the cemeteries. We spoke to Alyson Hodgekiss – Executive Assistant to the Director of Engineering and Works, who manages our three cemeteries – and our Parks & Gardens Coordinator Guy Stearn about the work they do.

I do my best to guide and help families by giving them their options as clearly and simply as I can. It is very important to me to have clear paths of communication with the family, be understanding and maintain empathy.

How do you assign jobs?

Jaxon has been selected to play for the Australian Universities rugby league side when they take on the Australian Police and Australian Defence Forces sides in a tri-series in October. He also represented NSW Universities against QLD back in June.

It is also important to have good levels of communication with the outdoor cemetery crew and funeral director. We have an excellent outdoor crew at Kiama Council, they are very experienced and do an awesome job.

Guy: Because we’re a small council, it’s the same team doing parks & gardens maintenance and cemeteries. For example, the same machine and operator that digs graves also excavates road drainage and performs clean up after bad weather. However, burials take priority over any other maintenance work and Council recently invested in a second excavator, which certainly makes the juggle a little easier.

Alyson: Normally, if a full burial plot is required, the funeral director will organise it, but families can also come to us direct.

What’s the process for obtaining a plot or niche?

Guy: We are the team behind the scenes making a difficult time possible for families in grief. It’s important to us to ensure that when families visit their loved ones in the cemetery, the place is as well-presented as possible.

Also, this year there has been a lot of inclement weather, which meant some burials were delayed due to sodden ground that was unsafe to excavate, particularly at Kiama’s sea-level Bombo Cemetery.

Providing peace of mind

What does the outdoor team do?

I update the cemetery administrative records, including ash placements done by the crematorium, and keep our cemetery maps and plans up to date.

When not on representative duties he can be seen playing for his long-time club the Dapto NowCanaries.inthe third year of his apprenticeship, Jaxon says he enjoys the variety of work and challenges he gets at Council. This can include anything from fixing gates, to producing signs and Jaxontoolboxes.sayshe chose aluminium work as it’s a good skill to have, and one that’s in a lot of demand. He also credits his works depot colleagues for always being willing to take the time to help him improve his skills and experience.

You’re in touch with people during an emotional time. How do you manage that?

I liaise with funeral directors, families and our Parks & Gardens Coordinator for burial bookings, and organise plaques for families for modular niches.

Guy: People usually book with Aly seven to ten days in advance, which gives us time to inspect the plot and organise the resources. Aly does an excellent job and her attention to detail makes our lives easier operationally and gives us confidence we are digging in the right place.

It is very unfortunate when this happens and we appreciate families’ patience and understanding. Thankfully, we have always managed to find suitable outcomes for everyone involved.

Kiama Council’s apprentice boilermaker Jaxon Lavender is kicking goals at Kiama Council and in the sporting world.

Alyson: It’s hard seeing people hurting and missing their loved ones.

At Gerringong, we can only sell full burial plots on an ‘at needs’ basis because it is nearing full capacity.

What do you find challenging about the role?

Planning new beams and ash placement areas is also an important part of my role.

Do people generally book in advance?

Alyson Hodgekiss and Guy Stearn at Gerringong cemetery

Once I’ve given people the options and a map of the cemetery clearly showing the available spots, I always encourage them to visit and take a look for themselves.

What’s your role in cemetery management?

To reserve or purchase a plot or niche, people can call or email Council, or book a face-to-face appointment with me at our Administration Centre.

Just a quick note: this ice cream doesn’t actually store very well for long periods. It’s great when you first make it but after a few days it seems to get a slightly floury texture. This appears to be mitigated by adding extra ingredients à la my mother, and making it into ice-cream sandwiches. No one has ever complained of a floury ice-cream sand wich. Makes 1.5 litres.

“So, as soon as I could after I retired I got on a plane to see what the place was like.”James and his wife left the quiet town of Gerringong and travelled to the thriving and bustling Guildford, as he describes it, 30km south of Heathrow. “In the research my cousin had done, it appeared that my great grandfather was sent from home at the age of eight to South Africa, where he eventually escaped and ended in a place called Nantucket.”

After returning home from his trip around the world, James published the first book of the series with the second novel, Turner’s Awak ening, published in late 2021.

No trip will be taken to Africa to continue to follow the footsteps of his main character, but James says he has many contacts to call upon to capture the atmo sphere.“Themost rewarding thing for me as a writer is devel oping the characters and seeing them flourish through trials and tribulations. It is a little bit like bringing up your kids.”Aself-published author, James didn’t start promoting the books until he had the second one out for people to get hooked on the series.
