Roundabout solution to Addos Corner It is finally happening. Beachsiders will lose a daily dose of excitement when Council implements a long overdue solution to the traffic hazard that is the corner at Addisons Service Station.

The concept includes a 10 metre wide roundabout, a crossing on a raised threshold on the school side of the roundabout, a footpath in front of the service station and a pedestrian refuge on the Manning St side. Construction is due to commence in the week beginning 10 June, and will take several weeks. During this time, southbound traffic from Manning St will be detoured down Bonaira, Reid and Marks streets to South Kiama Drive. Other traffic changes will also be needed at various times, so keep an eye out.

We need your support for our Dinners As some of you already know, a complaint from a neighbour about our monthly dinners means we have to apply to extend the hours of operation in our DA so we can continue with our popular events. We’re very grateful for the support we have received so far, and would like to formalise that into a petition to accompany our DA application.

At the moment our hours are 7 to 9, seven days a week (although thankfully for us we don't have to open all that time!). We propose to increase this to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, to allow us to continue with our occasional dinners to a suitably grown-up time. We believe this is a compromise most people can live with.

Cohen's off soon (sob!)

Better pop in soon if you want to say goodbye to Cohen, as he is leaving us on 12 June to prepare for impending fatherhood (he works Weds to Sat).

Cohen has been an important part of our team for three and a half years, making many friends and Cohen sent me this picture impressing many when I was away during the Jazz more with his cookFestival, to show me they were ing skills. We've often doing just fine without me. joked that we feel like we are in an episode of The Cook and The Chef, with both of us learning from each other and relishing the sheer joy of producing delicious food.

For his farewell, I'm taking him on a foodie daytrip to Sydney. We'll catch up with other Cafe alumni (all at USyd) who are keen to show him a good time.

No doubt he'll be popping in with his daughter on a regular basis, to see what things are like from the other side of the counter. We certainly hope so!

In a seamless transition, we've got John Mcfeat starting the next day - but more about him in the next edition, to give him time to settle in.

Where’s the milk?

Frustratingly for the people at The Pines Kiama, the final inspection they need before they can start selling their milk keeps being postponed by the authority in charge. We can't wait to be able to get our hands on it, for use both in our coffee and food, and be able to sell it to you. It has been gratifying to see the number of you who have come in asking for it already.

In the meantime, they have started selling their gelato at the markets in the area, with the debut fittingly being at the Kiama Produce Market, where this pic was taken. We will shortly be stocking tubs of their gelato for sale at the Cafe, in our new freezer.

Celebrate the Winter Solstice with your clothes on As a sign of goodwill following the complaint about our dinners, we cancelled our May Dinner while we worked out how to react. As the issue won't be resolved immediately, we are making the most of the occasion of the Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year) to have a Swedish Night with an earlier start and finish time. The Swedes celebrate St Lucia's Day on their Winter Solstice in December, as you can imagine their joy at the thought of longer days at last.

We've organised a celestial floor show when you come and go, as it is just two days shy of a super moon - the closest, and therefore largest, full moon of the year.

Find out just how much is being Made in Kiama

Catering role puts local food front and centre The Pavilion Kiama recently put its catering out to tender, and we are thrilled to have been successful in our bid to be on the Panel of Caterers for functions other than weddings.

Following the outstanding success of the first Made in Kiama market late last year, a bigger and better event has been organised for June.

This time there are 50 stalls, and the creative market is being held in The Pavilion. Their facebook page shows a wonderful range of items, from jewelery and hats to toys and gourmet food. You can even get gelato there!

The Pavilion has become a popular venue for conferences, dinners and meetings, with state of the art facilities, including the NBN. As our bid stressed our commitment to local food, it is a wonderful opportunity to support emerging producers and showcase the quality and variety of our region's produce to visitors and locals.

We've been doing much more catering of late our customers have had a rash of milestone birthdays, ranging from a rocking party for Chris' 40th to a small family dinner for Peter's 90th.

Fancy our food for dinner? Check out our new freezer next time you are in, as we are now selling our food for you to take home frozen.

Perfect for those days when you don't feel like cooking or just don't have the time to prepare a nutritious meal. All of the food we will sell will be made from scratch, and come with heating instructions and serving suggestions. No preservatives or other nasties, so the contents list will be full of things you recognise, rather than numbers.

Calling all Rodrigez fans Gerringong Pics & Flicks is screening the Oscar winning documentary about cult musician and songwriter Rodrigez, Searching for Sugarman, as its June screening.

Help make a Wrap with Love Kiama Library, in conjunction with local knitting groups, is participating in the national Wrap with Love knit-in for for the first time this year.

Wrap with Love is based on the simple idea of helping as many people as possible around the world by providing warm wraps to ward off hypothermia and show them we care. Volunteers knit squares, and 28 of them are sewn together to make blankets.

The film shows how, while unsuccessful in the US where he lives, he gained legendary status in South Africa. His fans eventually tracked him down almost 30 years after his album was released and resurrected his career. The documentary has built on this revival in a spectacular way. As you read this, he is preparing to be one of the headliners at the Glastonbury Festival. As are the Rolling Stones. A fairy tale ending indeed.

Considering tertiary study online?

Kiama Library is holding an information night for current or prospective distance education students to highlight the way it can assist with studies and explain what resources are available to students.

The night marks the start of the Kiama Library’s association with the Open Universities Australia Connect Program.

The program offers a unique opportunity for the universities to work collaboratively with local public libraries to create community spaces for students. Kiama's NBN access will be a great advantage to our students.

In the past 20 years they have sent more than 300,000 wraps to people in over 75 countries, including Australia, with the help of our hardworking and generous volunteers.

So if you can knit (and it is a skill, like riding a bike, that you never forget) or sew or generally be useful, you are very welcome to come along and help Kiama contribute as many squares as possible to the national effort.

Bring along any 4mm needles you have, and any spare 8 ply wool. The more colours the better. Additional needles and wool will be available from other keen knitters if you have lost yours. The squares are made to a simple, standard pattern so the rugs can be sewn together easily.

Details: Thursday 13 June from 11-2 at Kiama Library. Tea and coffee will be provided, and we'll be supplying some baked goods to keep your strength up.
