Kentucky Horse Park Foundation recently awarded a grant of $90,000 to the Kentucky Horse Park which will be directed toward the purchase and planting of trees.

Through this generous support, only made possible by its family of donors, KHPF funds will be directed toward the purchase of 100 trees, representing a variety of species.

The Kentucky Horse Park recognizes the ever-increasing need to renovate and replace competition barns, and it has placed this effort as a top priority over the next year. The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation stands committed to assist the Park in fundraising for this important project.

Plans are well underway for the 2022 Southern Lights Holiday Festival at the Kentucky Horse Park. Celebrating its 29th year at the Kentucky Horse Park, Southern Lights presented by Friends of Coal is a magical holiday tradition for thousands of families from throughout the Bluegrass and beyond.

The seasons are changing in the Bluegrass, and the Kentucky Horse Park is arguably one of the most beautiful places to experience it! Autumn leaves provide the perfect backdrop for our resident horses, cooler temperatures make traipsing the grounds so enjoyable, and special events are scheduled to attract visitors of all ages.

Here at the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation, we are certainly enjoying the fall, and we are also looking to the future. The 29th Annual Southern Lights Holiday Festival opens on November 25, and we can’t wait to welcome guests from across the Bluegrass and beyond.The KHPF staff is working hand in hand with the Park as we make plans for the expansion of education programs like the Mustang Troop and the Field Trip Fund.

Donor Dollars at Work as KHP Plants 100 Trees Kentucky Horse Park Foundation recently awarded a grant of $90,000 to the Kentucky Horse Park which will be directed toward the purchase and planting of trees. Through this generous support, only made possible by its family of donors, KHPF funds will be directed toward the purchase of 100 trees, representing a variety of species.

Lee Carter, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park, requested the funding, stating, “Over the last several years, we have taken down many trees that were no longer healthy or fallen due to weather conditions. This grant will allow us to maintain one of the iconic elements of the Park, our landscape.”

Carter will work closely with the Department of Forestry and Natural Services at the University of Kentucky and Top Notch Tree Services to ensure that the proper trees are selected and handled with the utmost care. Top Notch began providing tree services for the Kentucky Horse Park earlier this year and has identified and prioritized areas

that need attention. The Park plans to purchase oaks, maples (not red maples), yellow wood, tulip poplar, and eastern white pines.

Kathy Meyer, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation, stated “The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation applauds this effort of the Kentucky Horse Park and is delighted to support this green initiative. We hope this is just the beginning of our shared commitment to enhancing trees and landscaping at the Park.”

This grant was awarded through a formal application process, administered by the KHPF Grants Committee, composed of members of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation Board of Directors.

Update on KHP Barn Renovation Project The Kentucky Horse Park recognizes the ever-increasing need to renovate and replace competition barns, and it has placed this effort as a top priority in the next year.

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation stands committed to assist the Park in fundraising for this important project.

to gather information and research various barn types.

This recently formed KHP Barn Task Force has identified several key items to be addressed when planning location and construction, including how to better separate vehicle traffic from horse traffic.

At a recent meeting, the KHP Commission voted to tear down Barns 8-12 during the 2022 season. Temporary stalls will be used in the coming year to replace the barns that are being removed.

Fundraising for this effort is ongoing, and KHPF is grateful to those individuals that have already made significant contributions which will ensure the launch, execution, and completion of this project. The KHP Foundation toasted the Kentucky Dressage Association on July 7th in recognition of their contribution to the recent Kentucky Horse Park Footing Enhancement Project within the arenas adjacent to the Covered Arena. The arenas are in full use and the improvements have substantially increased the quality of the competition footprint at the Park!

Capital Support from the Commonwealth

The overall allocation of $21 million is allocated in the following manner over this biennium (July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2024) and is in addition to the Park’s General Fund Allocation:

EDUCATION Mustang Troop ($21,555): Funding to support the efforts of the 2022 Mustang Troop program which was held in June and July.

$1.5 million/per year in maintenance pool

Education Program ($30,000): Funding to support the purchase of horses to be used by Mustang Troop participants and the Education Department.

$2 million for Rolex Stadium/Covered Arena

MOUNTED POLICE Saddle and helmet ($3,845.55): Funding to purchase saddle and helmet for KHP Mounted Police.

EQUINE OPERATIONS Horse Drawn Tours Vet Expense and Horse Shipment ($1,549.74): Funding to ship horses and cover vet expenses for horses used in Horse Drawn Tours Stall fans in Big Barn ($371.96): Funding to purchase stall fans for Big Barn INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE HORSE Mold Remediation ($50,000): Funding to support mold remediation, partially funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences.

These grants were awarded through a formal application process, administered by the KHPF Grants Committee, composed of members of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation Board of Directors.

$2 million for roofs (Visitor Center, International Museum of the Horse, Gate House)

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is delighted to support the Park by awarding grants through a formal application process. Projects funded during the Spring, Summer, and Fall Quarters of 2022 include:

$4 million for International Museum of the Horse Renovation $10 million for Barn Renovation In many cases, the projects mentioned above are long overdue, but have been cost-prohibitive until now. The KHPF and the KHP Commission are immensely grateful for this support and encourage those that love the Park to vocalize their gratitude to Kentucky legislators and lawmakers when the opportunity presents itself.

This investment in the Park makes the work we do at the KHP Foundation that much more important.

The KHPF is committed to offering its assistance in maximizing the Park’s potential in the months and years ahead.

Kentucky Horse Park Foundation Celebrates the Return of Field Trips

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is delighted to report that fields trips have returned to the Kentucky Horse Park!

Schools were unable to visit during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but beginning in September 2021, the Park welcomed a number of school groups to its grounds.

Over the course of the 2021-2022 school year, nearly 1,500 children visited the Kentucky Horse Park through a school field trip. Through the support of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation and its generous donors, all public Kentucky schools are eligible to visit the Kentucky Horse Park free of charge and apply for bus transportation assistance.

Since its inception in 2016, the program has allowed over 15,000 Kentucky school children to visit the park. During their time at the park, students tour the International Museum of the Horse, meet retirwed racehorse champions, and are introduced to horse breeds from around the world. They gain exclusive access to the one of the world’s most renowned horse facilities, and they are given an experience that otherwise would be unavailable to them.

Mustang Troop is Back in the Saddle

The Kentucky Horse Park Mustang Troop celebrated another successful summer as outstanding youth from the Lexington community gained exposure to horses and riding, many for the very first time.

The KHP Mustang Troop serves disadvantaged youth, providing free of charge a life-changing summer horse camp experience. Through a partnership with Consolidated Summer Enrichment Program, the KHP Mustang Troop identifies at-risk youth from Fayette County and invites them to the KHP for a summer horse camp. Mustang Troop participants learn how

to groom, clean stalls, lead a horse, and ride. Special activities throughout the experience include visits to the International Museum of the Horse, lecturedemonstrations from equine professionals, and arts and crafts activities with trained and compassionate staff members.

This beloved KHP education program has been in existence for over twenty-five years and is made possible through the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation.

Visits with Santa, the Exotic Animal Petting Zoo, and elaborate mini train displays are just a few of the attractions included with admission.

The Southern Lights Stroll serves as the unofficial kick-off to the holidays for thousands of families from across the Bluegrass, and this year promises to be more festive than ever before.

On November 20, the Kentucky Horse Park is thrilled to welcome guests of all ages who will catch the first glimpse of the Southern Lights while they run, walk, and stroll through three miles of dazzling lights displays. In addition, the Holiday Village will be open for Stroll participants, giving walkers and runners the first opportunity to delight in visits with Santa, and rides on mini train!

Participants may either enter the competitive 5K race or the untimed and leisurely “Stroll”. Participants are invited to don their holiday apparel, as the event always attracts festive costumes, including Santa and his merry ole elves. Staff also recommends to dress for the weather (Jack Frost seems to always visit on the night of the Stroll).

BATTLE IN THE SADDLE! The ninth annual Battle in the Saddle Team Penning, presented by Mt. Brilliant Farm proved to be one of the most popular – and most fun! - events at the Park in 2022. Held on September 2, 2022 and benefitting the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation, a record crowd enjoyed an entertaining night of fierce competition and After Party featuring The Ranahans.

The 2022 Champion team was sponsored by Park Equine Hospital and included Jamie Ballard, Wes Kincaid, and Austin Nettleship.

Each of the winning team members received a custom silver belt buckle, along with a custom padded halter from Wise Choice Tack & Supply, a gift certificate to Horse Cents, McCauley Feed products, and Dimples Horse Treats.

The second-place team was sponsored by Futurity Hill Farm, which included Bedell Conboy, Bill Hilliard, and Polly Hilliard. The thirdplace team was sponsored by Spy Coast Farm and featured Codie Rayfield, Cyler Rayfield, and Kiowa Waters.

Trotting Triple Crown Winner Joins the Hall of Champions

2016 trotting Triple Crown winner and triple millionaire Marion Marauder joined the Kentucky Horse Park’s prestigious Hall of Champions this summer. Owned

by Jean Wellwood and Devin Keeling and campaigned by trainers Paula Wellwood and Mike Keeling, Marion Marauder become the first Hambletonian winner to occupy the famous barn.

Marion Marauder reached the pinnacle of trotting greatness when he swept the 2016 Hambletonian, Yonkers Trot and Kentucky Futurity with regular driver Scott Zeron to become the ninth trotting Triple Crown winner in history.

“The Kentucky Horse Park Hall of Champions recognizes some of the finest horses who have competed on the track. We are excited to welcome Marion Marauder to this exclusive group,” says Kentucky Horse Park Executive Director Lee Carter. “Having won the 2016 Trotting Triple Crown, he has earned his place in history, and we are honored to be entrusted with his care. We look forward to introducing Marion Marauder to our guests for years to come.”

The son of Muscle Hill­­­out of Spellbound Hanover raced for six years and retired in October of 2020 as the richest active Standardbred and eighth richest North American based trotter in harness racing history, with $3.39 million (USD) in earnings. He achieved a mark of 1:50.2 at the age of seven.

The determined trotter won 22 of 69 lifetime starts and was named the 2016 O’Brien Award winner for Three-Year-Old Trotting Colts & Geldings, the USHWA Dan Patch Award winner for Trotter of the Year and Three-Year-Old Male Trotter and the 2017 USHWA Dan Patch Award winner for Older Trotting Horses.

Marion Marauder joins retired Standardbreds Western Dreamer, Pacing Triple Crown Winner; Mr. Muscleman, Trotter of the Year; Won the West, two-time Breeders Crown Champion; and Thoroughbreds Funny Cide, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes Winner, and Point Given, Preakness and Belmont Stakes Winner, in the Hall of Champions.

Go For Gin Memorial Fund The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation seeks to honor the life of former Hall of Champions resident Go For Gin through a permanent memorial to this great horse. The KHPF has launched a campaign to raise $30,000 which will enable the Park to acquire a stunning bronze of Go For Gin, sculpted by the late acclaimed artist Edwin Bogucki. This piece will not only celebrate our beloved Gin, but it will also enrich the artistic landscape of the Kentucky Horse Park.

Gin won the 120th Kentucky Derby with Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron. He followed that win with a second in the Preakness Stakes (G1) and the Belmont Stakes (G1) losing both of the races to Tabasco Cat. From age 2 to 4, Go For Gin won 14 out of his 19 races, earning $1,380,866. He lived at the Park’s Hall of Champions since retiring from stud duty in June 2011 until his death in March 2022. During residency at the Kentucky Horse

Park, hundreds of thousands of individuals from around the world had the unique opportunity to meet this Thoroughbred racing legend.

“As you might expect, Gin’s presence is missed by both the staff and the public”, stated Rob Willis, manager of the Hall of Champions. He continued, “During his tenure here at the Park, he became one of the most charismatic and endearing residents. He also became one of the most accessible horses at the Hall of Champions due to his gentle demeanor and love of attention. With him being a Kentucky Derby Winner, it made it even more special.”

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is proud to lead the effort to memorialize this Champion.

Pony Parents’ Land The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation and Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC teamed up for the 10th year to host Pony Parents’ Land during the USEF Pony Finals. Parents of competitors were treated to a hospitality area to build awareness about the work of the Foundation.

What was your first position at the Park?

I was a combination equine worker/ backup announcer for the Parade of Breeds shows and the Hall of Champions shows during my first summer at the Park.

What does your job currently entail?

I am the announcer for the Parade of Breeds, Hall of Champions and Trolley Tours, and write scripts for all of the shows, every breed of horse, and each of the Hall of Champions residents. I also produce the videos for the Hall of Champions, design print collateral

and signage, source and arrange music for each horse in the Parade of Breeds and help to produce special night and corporate shows and the annual “Hallowhinny” show. We have a Breeds Barn weekend guest program for drill teams, breed associations and equine performers, and I manage that as well.

In the Park’s winter season, I assist with the “Stall-Side Chats” at the barns, work on the guest weekend recruiting and planning, produce new/updated videos for the Hall of Champions, write and update scripts for the Parade of Breeds, source and arrange new music for the Parade of Breeds show and work with the barn managers and others to plan the summer season.

What do you like most about your job?

I really enjoy entertaining the crowds of folks from all around the country (and world) who visit the Park, but I couldn’t do my job, and certainly wouldn’t enjoy it, if not for my very hard working and kind coworkers in the Equine Operations Department, especially Barn Managers Andy Freitag, Rob Willis, and Mindy Welch.

Favorite season at the Park?

I always look forward to “opening day” in the Spring, prior to looking forward to the end of the hot and humid Summer months in the Fall!

What phrase or cliché do you most live by?

One day at a time, unless I’m under a deadline, and “two days at once” is necessary.

Who is the most famous person you have met?

Cigar, the Racehorse. Though not human, he had more personality than many people I have met.

If you were a horse, what breed would you be and why?

A Miniature horse. I’d get tons of love and attention without having to do anything spectacular.

What movie can you rewatch over and over again?

The Red Violin or Goodfellas.

Depends on my mood.

What is an insider tip for someone that has never been to the Park?

During hot and humid weather, make sure to bring plenty of water! with you!

Kathy Vespaziani has spent the last nine years supporting the Kentucky Horse Park in a variety of roles.

She first landed at the Park as a guest staying at the campground during her self-dubbed “midlife crisis tour.” After attending a Professional Horseman’s Course, she spent two seasons working with the Park’s horses before officially becoming part of the team. Today she writes scripts and announces for the Parade of Breeds, Hall of Champions, and Trolley Tours along with organizing and planning the entertainment at the Park.

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation congratulates Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital on its very successful Hats Off Day and Rood & Riddle Kentucky Grand Prix at the Kentucky Horse Park on July 30! The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation was honored to be named one of the beneficiaries of the live and silent auctions held at the Sponsors’ Tent. Guests enjoyed thrilling competition in a festive atmosphere, while raising valuable funds for charity. The evening also honored Rood & Riddle co-founder, Dr. Tom Riddle, for his service to the horse industry. Rood & Riddle announced the creation of the W. Thomas Riddle Perpetual Trophy which will serve to celebrate Dr. Riddle’s legacy for years to come. The KHP Foundation would like to congratulate Dr. Riddle on his retirement and thank him for his generosity to the Kentucky Horse Park over the years!

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation hosted two trail rides this year-a beautiful early summer ride on June 4 and a crisp fall trail ride on September 10. Guests enjoyed a six-mile trail ride throughout the Park’s greenspace, including its world-famous cross-country course and steeplechase course.

Proceeds benefited the KHPF Tree Fund-an ongoing effort to nurture existing trees at the Kentucky Horse Park, as well as plant new ones. Follow the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation on social media for information about upcoming trail rides in 2023!
