THE NERU-CITYLAB MAGAZINE The project YEK2.0 should be visible to people. The first visualization is shown in a full version of NeRu Citylab magazine.

This magazine contains a historical research about the connections between the Netherlands and Russia in relation to the Modern movement in architecture; it gives an impression about Eindhoven and the state of its architectural culture concerning Modernist buildings and what re-using these buildings mean in the social context of everyday life in Eindhoven. The magazine creates a framework for the reader about Yekaterinburg and its history of Constructivist buildings and what the mind-set of the inhabitants is about their architectural richness and in what condition the buildings are nowadays.

The new generation, a student and inhabitant from Yekaterinburg, describes this mind-set of present Yekaterinburg and how people deal with their living environment. The magazine also contains the proposals of the students and design offices which entered the workshops.

These proposals show new ideas about the identity of Yekaterinburg. They show how the buildings which are empty now could be re-used. They give inspiring ideas for a step toward a new identity.

Этот журнал содержит исторические исследования о связи между Нидерландами и Россией в отношении современного движения в архитектуре. Он дает представление о городе Эйндховен, состоянии его архитектурной культуры в модернистских зданиях и социальном контексте их повторного использования. Журнал рассказывает читателю о Екатеринбурге и о его истории конструктивизма, о влиянии мышления жителей города на облик архитектурного богатства и то, в каком состоянии здания находятся в настоящее время. Новое поколение, студенты и жители Екатеринбурга, раскрывают новое видение города и то, как они могут влиять на среду, в которой живут. Журнал также содержит предложения студентов и конструкторских бюро, которые стали результатом семинаров. Эти предложения раскрывают вдохновляющие идеи, которые станут следующим шагом на пути к новому пониманию Екатеринбурга.

During that Ural Biennale we were able to present and investigate the similarity of both regions and cities, although Eindhoven is ten times smaller then Yekaterinburg.

The industrial past during the last 100 years and the actual situation makes us partners of a postindustrial family. We could talk in lectures and round table conferences about the lessons we learned in Eindhoven during the last 20 years how to deal with large empty former Philips factory sites.

The project YEK2.0 was born during that visit and started with a cooperation between knowledge institutes in both cities to use the city ‘as a laboratory’ for research and adjustments for new policy.

All based on the awareness of the very identity of the region and city with icons like the White Lady in Eindhoven and the former water tower as the ‘PEARL’ of Yekaterinburg.

За период Уральский биеннале мы смогли представить и исследовать сходство обоих регионов и городов, хотя Эйндховен в десять раз меньше, чем Екатеринбург. Индустриальное прошлое в течение последних 100 лет и современная ситуация делает нас членами постиндустриального содружества. Мы говорили на лекциях и обсуждениях об опыте, постигнутом в Эйндховене в течение последних 20 лет в использовании пустующих зданий бывших заводов компании Philips. Проект YEK 2.0 был задуман во время этого визита и был начат с сотрудничества между институтами знаний в обоих городах, чтобы использовать города как лаборатории для исследования и поиска новых решений. WORKSHOP YEK2.0 Yekaterinburg 2011 In September 2011 we were able thanks to the Dutch Embassy to organize a workshop in Yekaterinburg to ask students to think ‘out of the box’ about three questions in their city: a new life for the ‘pearl’ (white former water tower), the theme ‘history is sexy’ about the new quality of empty factories for students and young starters to live and start their own company and the third project ‘Dream Dare Do’ about dreaming of a new future but start to work on it tomorrow as a adjustment for a new policy. All of these themes concern the transformation and re-use of the existing city instead of demolishing it.

In the frame of celebration in 2013 of Dutch Russian collaboration, the city counsel of Eindhoven and the Brabant Academy, together with the architectural firm UAcrhitects and a design atelier called Tweelink (also present during Moscow Design Act), have initiated this project in the city of Yekaterinburg.

В сентябре 2011 года благодаря голландскому посольству мы смогли организовать семинар в Екатеринбурге для студентов, с целью выработать нестандартные проекты для трех направлений: «Жемчужина» (новая жизнь для Белой Башни), “История может выглядеть чувственно” об использовании пустующих заводов для проживания студентов и молодежи и начала своего дела, и «Осмелься воплотить мечты» о новом будущем, над которым нужно начинать работать уже Завтра. Все эти темы раскрывают идею преобразования и повторного использования существующих построек города вместо того, чтобы сносить их. В рамках празднования в 2013 году 400-летия сотрудничества России и Нидерландов, городской совет Эйндховена и академия Брабант, совместно с архитектурным бюро UAcrhitects и дизайнерским бюро Tweelink (которые также присутствовали на Московском Фестивале Дизайна), начали осуществление этого проекта в Екатеринбурге.

RUSSIAN SPRING

by Galina Kozulina An information compass is represented on a White Tower as a tabloid with the references and announcements, meeting places around the Tower and space for cultural events. Tetrahedron, a living symbol of friendship and new start, looks like a triangle from all sides, the triangle is a cursor, showing “where to go” according to current events in the city. LED lights may become a good basis to make an installation real, it allows to accentuate a unique form of a building from its center. CultUral city is to be attractive and vivid. The Russian spring is to become not only a symbol of a good climate for innovations, but also a symbol of revolution in minds. This moving light net will pierce the city with lights that will make the image of an infinite glow show. From the height of the bird’s flight this light will become a symbol of the growing youth movement, innovation and development.

Белая Башня может стать указателем, компасом для людей, проезжающих мимо, как таблоид с объявлениями, и как место встреч и культурных мероприятий. Тетраэдр – яркий и простой символ дружбы и нового начала, выглядит с любой стороны как треугольник со всех сторон, а треугольник играет роль курсора, указывающего «куда ехать» согласно текущим событиям в городе. Светодиоды могут стать хорошей основой для реальной инсталляции, они позволят подчеркнуть уникальный вид здания. Культурный город должен быть привлекательным и ярким. Русская весна – это не только символ среды инноваций, но и символ революции сознания. Движущийся чистый свет сделает Екатеринбург городом огней, бесконечным световым шоу. С высоты птичьего полета этот свет станет символом растущего молодежного движения, инноваций и развития.

IRON LADY INDUSTRIAL ROOTS

by Anna Khodyreva This work is devoted to the industrial heritage role re-thinking and rehabilitation of industrial areas. Theoretical basis of industrial areas’ strategic development is revealed in “INDUSTRIAL ROOTS” conception. Defined goals and basic principles are broad-based and could be commonly applied not only to Yekaterinburg context, but to other big cities as well.

The Electrical Multiple City Trains System is supposed to be based on the existing railways and metro line. This transport system unites the most important industrial areas of the city. Selected industrial areas become train stations and social centers of the districts. Selling points, ways of realization and branding descriptions are attached. This conception can give the city an option to look anew at its industrial heritage, to improve social functions and become an important touristic point.

The «IRON LADY» concept can help the citizens to realize the value of industrial heritage and to look anew at it.

Работа посвящена вопросам переосмысления роли индустриального наследия и реабилитации промышленных образований, включенных в структуру крупных городов. На примере разработки концепции «Индустриальные маршруты» раскрывается теоретическая база подхода к стратегическому планированию существования индустриальных образований. С опорой на конкретную градостроительную ситуацию и при использовании существующих железнодорожных путей, предлагается создание системы кольцевой городской электрички. Приводятся коммерческие аргументы, описываются пути реализации проекта и принципы формирования узнаваемого бренда. Проект «Индустриальные маршруты» позволит городу по-новому воспринимать свое индустриальное наследие, сделать очередной шаг в развитии административной функции.

IRON LADY HISTORY IS SEXY

by Alexandra Predeina The search of the identity of Yekaterinburg leads us to its rich industrial heritage, which is currently in a really bad condition. The attempt to direct the attention to this problem & the desire to make a historical past attractive to a present are the main goals of industrial reconstruction. During the process of revival (the attraction of the activity to the dead industrial territories) the identity of the city forms it becomes visible & clear both for residents & guests of the city.

The “IRON LADY” project is the idea of adaptation of the industrial railways. The inclusion of it to the city transport net gives a pulse to the reconstruction & revitalization of the contemporary industrial territories. Based on the research every industrial territory gets a unique program for its introduction to the urban development process.

This is an example of such program for one of the industrial territory called VISStal.

Поиск идентичности Екатеринбурга неизбежно ведет нас к его богатому индустриальному наследию, переживающему, к слову, не лучшие времена сейчас. Попытка привлечения внимания к нему, желание сделать историческое прошлое привлекательным для настоящего – задача проекта реконструкции промышленных территорий. В процессе оживления, привлечения активности на мертвые промышленные территории формируется идентичность города, она становится осязаема и понятна горожанам и его гостям. Проект «IRON LADY» - проект для индустриальной железнодорожной сети города. Включение ее в городскую систему транспорта даст импульс реконструкции и развитию существующих промышленных территорий. На основе анализа каждой конкретной территории разрабатывается индивидуальная программа по включению ее в процесс городского развития. В данном проекте это продемонстрировано на примере завода ВИЗ-Сталь.

HEAR THE FUTURE IN YOUR HISTORY

by Elena Markova Creation a sustainable system for adaptation buildings to changing life in Ekaterinburg. (Identity challenge) Nowadays a need comes up to re-comprehend the past and validate it as a history, to find a value in it that will permit to dispose of heritage intelligently not leaving it for conservation.

NEW FUNCTION. We bring history up to future by giving new functions to industrial buildings. Info-center is the start point of the system where you can get all the information about the city, industrial buildings and events in it.

CONNECTION. Most of factories are connected to the railway transport system.

The existing historical railway system can become an alternative transport system that will connect separated districts together solving traffic problem. 2d level of connection is free internet connection between buildings for city guests from over the world.

REBRANDING. I propose to create a new brand for the project and for the city to change social attitude to the history by giving more easy opportunities to learn it with attention to details and new city public image based on industrial architecture aesthetics.

(Поиск индивидуальности) В настоящее время возникает необходимость переосмыслить прошлое и придать ему статус истории, найти в нем ценность, что позволит грамотно распорядиться наследием, не оставляя его для консервации. НОВАЯ ФУНКЦИЯ. Мы переносим историю на будущее, добавляя новую функцию в индустриальные здания. Информационный центр является отправной точкой системы, где вы можете получить всю информацию о городе, о пром. зданиях и происходящих там событиях. СОЕДИНЕНИЕ. Большинство заводов соединено ж/д сетью. Существующая историческая ж/д сеть может стать альтернативной транспортной системой города и соединить удаленные районы, разрешив транспортные проблемы. РЕБРЕНДИНГ. Я предлагаю создать новый бренд для проекта и для города, чтобы изменить общественное мнение относительно истории, создав больше возможностей ее изучать,

BRIEF REVIEW of what has been blowing the heads of the creative youngsters...

by Dmitriy Bezuglov There are times in one’s life when he thinks that being born not in New York or Berlin has automatically wasted his life, future career and views on the world, love and politics at whole. What is way better is that there are times when this stereotype crumbles down as the Berlin wall, just as it happened in October of 2011, when the Yek 2.0 Project was held in Yekaterinburg.

greener, the transport system bigger and better and the people closer to the peak of citizen conscience and satisfaction.

That’s what rocked. People became to know the city which is not opposed to them, but in which they live and cooperate.

Without this project flipping sides and understanding the position of the man in the city in terms of his activeness, this would have been really harder.

I got mostly puzzled by the cool and easy way the whole workshop had been going on. There was a moment of recognition – somewhere around the second part of the very first lecture, when everyone who had been sitting with classic thankyou-you-guys-are-great-but-i-am-stillnot-interested look, and all of a sudden ... something tickled, something tumbled and ignited. Two seconds of the bursting laughter made the audience melt into the working compound and yet malleable teams, which started working on projects which were based on the urge to do something good.

And then they presented the projects. In between these events there were heaps of discussions, doodling and coming up with ideas which would make the city

And now we think and act! And this simple chain of those two aspects does not tend to stop. And that is what is rocking at the moment.

“and all of a sudden...something tickled“ Впрочем, наверное, молодежь – не лучшее слово, которое обросло не такими уж жизнерадостными коннотациями; скорее, речь идет о первом поколении, которому сказали, что мир открыт, границ не существует, а потом оставили разлагаться в спокойно гниющем либерализме нулевых. Вполне естественно, что многие представители поколения, решив занять свой слот в ячеистой креативной индустрии, столкнулись со стереотипами в духе «Если я не родился\-лась в Берлине\Лондоне\так далее, мое будущее предопределенно и скучно». Тем лучше, когда стереотипы разрушаются словно Берлинская стена, что и произошло в октябре 2011 года в рамках проекта Yek 2.0 Меня больше всего удивила легкость и крутость, с которой подавался и проходил воркшоп. Первая же открытая лекция сумела превратить аудиторию, смотрящую на лекторов этим классическим взглядом из серии «спасибо-вы-классные-но-я-вам-неверю», в команду, готовую делать проекты, имеющие значение для города и отлично сказывающиеся на

настроении и самочувствии в процессе работы. Для этого потребовался лишь хрипящий микрофон, отблеск в очках Киза и несколько весьма удачных шуток. Дело вовсе не в том, что проект предлагал и продолжает предлагать осуществление проектов, меняющих самую суть восприятия города, превращающих его из набора замкнутых пространств в открытую коммуникационную сеть. Точнее, дело и в этом тоже. Но в первую очередь – мятущемуся творческому коммьюнити, попавшему в маргинальный период между индустриальным и постиндустриальным обществом, показали, что серьезные вещи можно делать с легкостью и (опциональной, но все же) улыбкой. Что таким образом можно выходить за пределы зоны комфорта, предполагающей оппонирование города субъекту. Что можно продумывать территории, на которых можно проводить встречи разных социальных классов, не боясь их предельной антагонизации. Что можно… Что можно многое.

Презентация метода привела к всплеску активности – группы действительно работали, они кооперировали - причем так, что в моих глазах этот термин лишился жутковатых советских коннотаций. Презентация работ, разгоряченные споры участников, куча малопонятных листочков, испещренных графиками, ключевыми словами и странными скетчами создавали впечатление чего-то большого. Или даже чего-то большего. Того, ради чего обычно советуют творить.

by Cees Donkers The contribution in lectures in Russia was to tell about the lessons in the city of Eindhoven for the last 20 years: not to demolish the modernism in Eindhoven (former Philips factories) but to keep it as a new identity for transformation, grow and development.

The results of the workshop YEK2.0 in September 2011 showed the awareness of this young generation in Russia. In 3 night-meetings from 3 hours they showed first ‘out of the box’ ideas about a new found identity. Next step is to show these results for the inhabitants of the city in phase 3 of this project. To make them aware and proud too about their identity.

To start a slow process of dialogue with the City Department to translate these ideas into practice. And of course there is no money to spend at the start, only the power of the thoughts and visuals as a seductive sketch of the future. Therefore it is needed to use the former white tower as the ‘PEARL’, an object of illustration of this new found identity and dignity.

Смыслом лекций в России было рассказать об достижениях в городе Эйндховен за последние 20 лет: не разрушить наследие модернизма (бывшие здания завода Philips), а сохранить как новую индивидуальность, позволяющую городу трансформироваться, развиваться и расти. Результаты воркшопа YEK2.0 в сентябре 2011 показали, заинтересованность молодого поколения. На третий день встреч ребята представили свои нестандартные идеи по поиску новой индивидуальности. Следующий шаг показать результаты жителям города, дать им возможность гордиться и беречь уникальность своего города. Это поможет начать процесс диалога с администрацией и позволит реализовать идеи. Конечно же, мы гачинаем без финансовой поддержки, опираясь только на наши сильные идеи, мысли и представления о будущем. Именно поэтому необходимо использовать бывшую водонапорную башню как «жемчужину», объект, иллюстрирующий вновь найденнуые индивидуальность и достоинство.

FINAL CONCEPT FOR THE WHITE TOWER The project aims at celebrating the cultural history of Yekaterinburg, embodied by amongst others the ancient water tower in the city centre. Goal is to make the city attractive for the new generation by using its history instead of demolishing it.

Inspiration for this goal was taken from the use of cultural heritage in the city of Eindhoven. The ‘Witte Dame’ in the centre of Eindhoven is provided as main example of how to create value for cultural heritage and provide the buildings with a practical function.

SCENARIUM СЦЕНАРИЙ

Проект призван подчеркнуть культурно-историческое наследие Екатеринбурга, частью которого является Белая башня на Уралмаше. Цель – дать современному поколению возможность по-новому посмотреть на город через призму истории вместо того, чтобы эту историю разрушить и забыть. Источником вдохновения для нашей работы послужило то, как переосмыслено культурное наследие Эйндховена. На примере Белой леди можно проследить ка воссоздается ценность культурного наследия и здания получают новое функциональное назначение.

The concept works on two different levels, both individual and collective. For every individual car driver, the experience of passing the tower is enriched by coloured light traveling with your car and entering the water reservoir of the tower.

This makes the moment of passing the White Tower a more positive experience.

On a collective level, the water reservoir of the White Tower will be filled with colour light representing all the cars passing the tower. This projected image on the White Tower will become a collaborative art piece of the citizens in the neighborhood.

The final concept is explained by means of a scenario.

Концепция работает на двух различных уровнях: индивидуальном и коллективном. За каждой проезжающей мимо Белой башни машиной следует цветной свет, который затем поднимается и в виде капли попадает в резервуар. Это создает у водителей и пассажиров позитивное впечатление. Постепенно водный резервуар Белой башни будет наполняться разными цветами (разноцветным светом), символизирующим каждую проезжающую мимо машину. Таким образом, цвето-световая проекция на поверхности башни станет объектом искусства, в создании которого принимает участие весь город.

MAY IN YEKATERINBURG

by Fiona Jongejans I decided to participate in this one-week project in Russia, because of my interest in cultural diversity and it’s relation to architecture. During my stay in Yekaterinburg I have learned so much about the architecture of the city and how it evolved from social structures over time. When I first arrived, I was completely overwhelmed by the magnitude of the city, but during the project I have come to appreciate the architecture in Yekaterinburg and the inhabitants with their drive for innovation.

Although the program of the project has been really intense and we had to work hard to finish our design proposal for the White Tower, I experienced the teamwork between Dutch and Russian students as fruitful and interesting. The architectural students in Yekaterinburg really had a drive for innovation in their city and I found their visions on the reuse of cultural heritage inspiring and motivating. The combination of Dutch Industrial Design students and Russian Architectural students made the project not only multi-cultural but also multi-disciplinary.

The discussions we had on the role of architecture in society and the role of the White Tower in the city created depth in the project. I believe we created value in YEK2.0 by sharing and discussion our visions on the combination of innovation and cultural heritage.

This project once again established the added value of sharing ideas internationally and I hope to experience much more of this!

Я решила принять участие в этом однонедельном пр другие культуры и их отношение к архитектуре. Пока я была в Екатеринбурге, мне удалось узнать многое об архитектуре этого города и о том, как влияла на ее формирование структура российского общества. Только прилетев, я была ошеломлена масштабом города, но во время работы над проектом ко мне пришло понимание ценности архитектуры Екатеринбурга и понимание его жителей с их стремлением к новому. Программа проекта была насыщенной и интенсивной, пришлось много работать, чтобы представить наши предложения по дизайну Белой Башни. Тем не менее, русские студенты также принимавшие участие в проекте, заряжали нас новой энергией каждый день! Для меня опыт командной работы голландских и русских студентов оказался очень плодотворным и интересным. Студенты факультета архитектуры УралГАХА стремятся привнести прогрессивные идеи в свой город, и я нахожу их видение переоценки

Совместная работа голландских студентов-дизайнеров и русских студентов-архитекторов сделала проект не только межкультурным, но и междисциплинарным. Наши разговоры о роли архитектуры в обществе и о роли Белой Башни в городе добавили в проект глубокое понимание проблемы. Хочется верить, что, делясь опытом и обсуждая наше видение того, как можно сочетать инновации и культурное наследие, нам удалось привнести новую ценность в проект YEK2.0. Этот проект в очередной раз показал, насколько важно международное взаимодействие и совместное развитие идей. Я надеюсь, что впереди у меня будет еще много подобного опыта!

MAY APPEARED TO BE FABULOUS!

In May 2012 new people, incredible fast and chaotic events flushed into my life. It was like a true drive!

To all intents and purposes the coming of dutch students turned in a kind of one week long «pressure-cooker». It was a real pleasure for me to see the assembly hall full of people, who were sincerely intersted in each word, who tried to catch the eyes of each speaker.

Since that time I’m often asked: how are the dutch guys? What’s gonna be further? What’s gonna happen in October?

Can we also join this program? Can we go to Brabant Biennial? How can we contact the students from Eindhoven? That is the most positive and the most important thing for me now.

And what is really very good about all these things…You see, a lot of students from Ekaterinburg, not all for sure, but the most of them, are used to treating european education like something special, inobtainable. They believe the european teachers and professors to be celestials, and they look upon the existing russian reality as a verdict.

They are students as well as their russian coevals, they do the same things, they also look for and learn something new.

And thus, Russian students got the other perception of the world around them, mentioned a lot of particularly nice and beautiful things they had not payed attention to before.

I am very glad and pleased with the fact that after May events students of both countries stay in touch, that the students from different russian cities and also from Ural State Academy of Architecture and Arts keep interconnections and discussions. It greatly helps them to share thoughts and ideas.

My internship in February 2012 gave me a new vision of architect’s job. It highlited what I like abou architecture and what I want to practise.

I already see the process of re-thinking to be started in Ekaterinburg: the people here form a new understanding, comprehend and value what they’ve got.

I also sincerely hope that everyone can feel and realize the boundless opportunities he has.

О, вот это был май! Май наполнился для меня людьми, движением, невообразимо быстрыми и хаотичными действиями и движениями, настоящий двигатель! На самом деле я считаю, что эта поездка стала, так сказать, сплошной Клаузурой, ‘’pressure-cooker’’, длиной в неделю. Мне было очень приятно видеть зал, полный людей, которые с искренним интересом вслушивались в каждое слово, вглядывались в глаза каждого человека. Для меня самым положительным аспектом, самым главным, явилось то, что, на протяжении всего этого времени уже после приезда гостей, ко мне часто подходят с вопросами, а как дела у ребят, а что будет дальше, а что будет в октябре?? А можно ли поехать? А как найти студентов из Эйндховена в интернете? А что в этом такого положительного - так это то, что ребята из Екатеринбурга, не все, конечно, но большинство, привыкли рассуждать о европейском образовании и обучении, как о чем-то особенном, совершено недостижимом, профессоров считать небожителями, а окружающую российскую действительность -

Многие из них, пообщавшись с иностранными гостями, посмотрев то, чем они занимаются, открыли для себя, что они такие же студенты, они так же ищут, они так же познают новое, и стали по-другому смотреть на мир, который их окружает, стали видеть в нем то особенно хорошее, чего мы не замечаем. Я очень рада, что после этой поездки студенты обеих стран общаются, студенты из разных городов России и даже из одного университета учатся вместе через общение и обсуждение, делятся идеями и мыслями. Моя стажировка в феврале открыла для меня много нового относительно того, как должна выглядеть моя профессия. Мне стало понятно то, чем я хочу заниматься, что люблю в архитектуре. Я вижу, что наш город уже переосмысляет себя, его люди формируют новое сознание, понимают ценность того, что они имеют. И искренне надеюсь, что каждый человек почувствует, что возможности его безграничны.

LOOKING BACK TO...

by Alexandra Predeina and Jetro Dam Our Dutch-Russian project started in September of 2011 when the first workshop took place in Yekaterinburg. Then our works were published in the “NeRu CityLab” magazine. The next step of our common project was the arrival of a group of Dutch students, both architects & designers.

The guys came in May to solve an urban problem of an abandoned symbol of Yekaterinburg, a pearl of our city, the White Tower. They arrived in a group of eight (students of architecture & industrial design). I as a participant of the project should host them, help them during their work & show them our city. So we spent enough time together to get an impression of each other.

Firstly they impressed me by the very idea to come to Russia especially to Yekaterinburg (it’s so far!). Such idea in heads of young Europeans always surprised me.

Moreover I was interested in their reaction to Russian reality: I mean not only the stereotypes the guys could have but the real problems we suffer from here. Furthermore I had some stereotypes about Dutch students. I think everybody understands what I mean but it wasn’t relevant )))

So when we started to work all the questions in my head lost their relevance because the totally different things replaced them. The way the guys worked, their approach to the research, means they used to solve the problems – everything was so different from ours, from the stuff we are used to. We observed the way they work, tried to fit it to our projects.

To sum up I can say the guys successfully found the solution working in such a big (for us) group , made the final presentation, kept to the deadline & meanwhile found extra time for parties ))) Maybe the most impressive thing was the last! The easiness by which the guys could keep to the deadline without any stress & sleepless nights is the dream of most Russian architectural students!

Looking back to that week I can say I got really nice & useful experience. Such cooperative work helps to ruin the stereotypes, exchange a professional experience & communicate with interesting people. Next step of our project is arrival of the Russian students to the Netherlands & I hope we could impress the guys with our work with the same power ))) Alexandra Predeina

“I learned that there was not much difference between a Russian student and me“ Even with modern days advanced means of communication, such as Internet and social media, it is surprising to see how one sided my image of Russia was when I started this study trip. I thought of Russia as the biggest country in the world with a rich supply of raw materials and a former communist government. I thought of Russian as a people that drink vodka, have poor living spaces and a fancy for anything big and rather shinny. But during our stay I came to see a lot more of Russia, where we met a very social and hardworking people that changed my stereotype. From the very first moment we where surrounded by students that acted as true consultants. Providing us with all the necessary background information on the project area like history, development, social structure and even some symbolism. These where no politically correct touristic guides, they where young architects of Yekaterinburg and this was ‘their’ city. They showed us a good time. We visited its student’s exhibitions, film festivals, art museums and of course its architecture (Some of the most wonderful monuments of constructivism).

We went to Russian bars and restaurants.

Everywhere we came we where received

respected and where requested to share our view of Russia.

We had a goal in Yekaterinburg: “to improve the status of industrial heritage”.

Our means: the redesign of an abandoned water tower in the middle of a market district. To accomplish our goal we first wanted to meet the Russian in there life environment. Thus we dove into the city where we met people sunbathing in the stadium, out to work selling furniture in an abandoned sportshal, sweating in garages and car markets, going with there friends to the forest to drink and enjoy food. Almost everywhere where small businesses and almost everywhere people where socializing. We communicated with these people using Russian students as translators, and thus we learned their opinion of the district and the white tower.

These impressions in mind we started a brainstorm to the new function of the water tower together with a group of Russian students. The design was greatly influenced by the feedback and ideas we gathered from these conversations.

During our stay we gave a daily presentation including the status of our design and it’s principles. Everyday we met dozen of new students coming to our project

presentation, Students of architecture, industrial design, art, etc. they all were interested in improving the cities urban environment. Together we discussed social structures, government influence, vandalism, investors and what else. Often we would see these students again on Facebook, in the bar, one even guided us to a nice restaurant where we spend the evening together, we went dancing, drinking traditional vodka. And one day some locals of the bar we where visiting invited us to join them because they where interested in foreign people. I learned that there was not much difference between a Russian student and me. It was nice to work with people from a different culture which shared our motivation for the project and our aim to combine study with pleasure.

EPILOGUE

by Cees Donkers The main goal of the project YEK2.0 is to share knowledge with a new generation as a new engine for a creative economy.

A new urban cultural climate and process of awareness to start a bottom up development of transformation in the existing city. Young people appeared to become very enthusiastic about the idea to think about changes in their society using their own ideas about their future.

Fresh and ‘out of the box’ thoughts are presented in this magazine. But it is not only about looking at and writing about the ‘pearls’ of the past, and dream about a new society, but also start tomorrow the cultural climate change by using that DNA as a part of the specific identity of the city and its people.

Just like Juri Gagarin, who is still the hero of the twentiest century, this new age can get their new heroes. Only nowadays there is no budget for research or changes, so the outcome of this workshop should be used in a clever and innovative way to show them to the city and the world.

It represents the new generation in a new age with a new concept called 2.0. No more blueprints, no more bricks for a still growing city by using new fresh landscape in the outskirts but attention for the

existing ‘left overs’ and abandonned, unsafe places, to the human urban live and society and the process to start a dialogue about these changes to build a mental support in the city. The White Tower can become such a new hero or icon for a cultural and mental change in the city like it happened in Eindhoven in 1990. YEK2.0 as a new course opr wave on the surfboard to the future...

Молодое поколение с энтузиазмом относится к возможности изменить что-то в обществе на основе собственного видения своего будущего. Свежие и нестандартные мысли – вот что показано в журнале. Но, все же, журнал не только о созерцании «жемчужин» прошлого и мечтах о будущем. Он также о том, как через использование ДНК в качестве основной составляющей айдентики города и его жителей можно повлиять на его культурную жизнь. В эту новую эру появятся свои личности, такие как Юрий Гагарин, который и по сей день является героем своего века. Поскольку сегодня у нас нет финансовой поддержки ни для исследований, ни для каких-либо нововведений, результаты этого воркшопа следует использовать с умом и в инновационном направлении, для того, чтобы сделать эти знания

Cвежие ландшафтные решения для окраин города, привлечение внимания к заброшенным объектам, которые кажутся небезопасными, к городской жизни людей – вот что позволит начать диалог о возможных и желаемых переменах и создать интеллектуальную поддержку в городе. В Эйндховене в 1990-м году своего рода героем стала Белая леди. Белая башня также может стать символом интеллектуальных и культурных перемен для Екатеринбурга. YEK2.0 – это новый курс, новая волна в путешествии по океану будущего.
