CB C H A R A C T E R BUILDING XL

Creating an office building in Boston, Massachusetts designed with the concept of character in contemporary architectural discourse. The form is constructed through the lens of architecture as a living object and its relationship with the environment.

Character Narrative A Long time ago, large creatures roamed the earth amongst our ancestors. Before they could be accurately recorded, they disappeared into their millenia long hibernation cycle. Recently, strange objects were found around the world. These were discovered to be a new species and their decaying bodies have been adapted into architectural structures.

Character Design The new developments around the Boston, MA seaport is populated with glass structures which takes ownership of the space away from people. The design of the creature was to decontextualize it from its environment as to create a distrubance within the urban fabric. The shape is of a creature warped by its environment, showing decay as if it was a living entity. The inital reaction to the building is discomfort due to the nature of the intense facade however the entrace juxtaposes itself and its surrounding by inviting the public into the building through a large opening within the structure and creating an elevated lobby floor to give hiearchy to people. This is further emphasized by the publicly programmable space in the middle of the lobby at the lightwell. Programming the office space around the black tinted facade reflectes the important of the center of the structure highlingting people in the lobby.

NC N EG OT I AT I N G C O L L I S I O N S

A collaboration with Evey Wang. Using the strategies of two existing architectural projects from the 1980s to develop the design of a mall and housing structure in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and negotiate between the site environment and these strategies.

Site Analysis Merkato can be seen as field of varying temporary spaces with different levels of transparencies and decay within the urban fabric. Through this analysis, we explored the dynamic spatial quality that exists beneath the roof and canopy systems, which we understand as flexible and permeable spaces with no clearly defined edges.

(Right) Khizar A diagram of a typical market street detailing the variation in transparencies of the canopies and decay of the roofs. (Left) Khizar Using a similar notational strategy, the site was analyzed as transparent canopy conditions and solids as decaying roof elements. Within the diagram is the light rail and the movement of traffic into the site.

12

13

Combinations Two precedents, Jean Nouvel’s Nemausus in France and Sir Norman Foster’s HSBC bank in Hong Kong. were chosen for the basis of analysis for the final design of the structure. As an affordable housing structure, the ‘failure’ of the Nemausus housing project was an excess of preprogrammed space that increased the area of each housing unit and thus increased its cost. The HSBC bank’s proposal was to create a space which can be programmed for mixed use, allowing for flexibility in its use and to allow for open circulation. It’s ‘failure’ is that although the spaces towards the middle of the building are open, the edges where the structural columns were placed restrict the circulation within those spaces.

Evey

The combination diagrams (right) distribute the structural columns of the HSBC building throughout the building by placing the service cores within them, allowing for more evenly distributed circulation and flexible programming. The diagram superimposes the Nemausus housing plan onto the columns to visualize a negotiation between the two precedents.

14

Ground Floor (Top) The ground floor directly models the quality of the existing market conditions and allow it to be a transitional moment between the exterior and our structure has over 30 service columns that provide basic amenities such as a bathroom, stairway and kitchen.

Khizar

It allows merchants to set up their own shops around the service cores allowing for the flexibility that occurs in the market and lower the barrier of entry for merchants whose services rely on these service cores, such as a restaurant. The amount of space allocated to each merchant is dependent on the negotiation of space with their neighbouring merchants and the buyers who navigate the area.

TH T H E S I S E X P LO R AT I O N S

A series of recent thesis drawings. As a means to understand the honesty of space, I began by filming my peers in their daily routines. The footage was then layered and manipulated into various still images. Using the stills, I made three collages to study film as a medium to draw and create architecture.

RP REIMAGINING PROVID E N C E An exploration of utopia as a design for a post-carbon city. Envisioning a floating skyscraper on the water composed of a series of stacked neighbourhoods in response to rising ocean tides and the scarcity of land in Providence, Rhode Island.

22

Concept Exploration Using a variety of mediums, an exploration of what it may mean to live in a city that reacts to the changing tides of Rhode Island and what may be a necessary design decision. 23

24

Floating Tower The skyscraper is made up of three different neighbourhood modules that rotate around a central core. Each module contains hallways, a park and an exterior private balcony per apartment. The top floor is a multipurpose space that can be used for public or private events. Each module is covered by transparent photo-voltaic cells that use solar energy to mitigate the cost of electricity to support the tower. Buoys in the water use kinetic energy of the waves to provide additional energy. The towers are located closer to the shore as it leaves the dep water channels for boats and ships to pass through

Module The interior of each module consists of four main floors and four sub-floors. The sub-floors can be accessed through the main hallways, which are connected to the central core. This allows the residents an opportunity to interact with one another. Each module has three types of housing typologies. The four units closest to the edges are double floor apartments. The inner eight apartments are single floors, accessed through the main floors and sub floors.

Core The skyscraper functions around a core that resides on one side of the structure. The modules, depending on their orientation, rotate around the central core. For effective use of natural sunlight, the modules face between the East, South, and West.

PROVIDENCE P A R K S

A free kinetic micro library designed for the Camden Avenue Park in Providence, Rhode Island. The concept is a response to the “Forest of Knowledge, a self directed prompt to create an overall theme for the park and the other micro libraries that may be installed by other local artists to follow.

26

Elevation The trunk holding up the hollow wooden box was supplied from cut down trees at Roger Williams Park. The variations of height is to mimic the evolutionary and agining process of human life where books with adult content are located within the highest library. The box itself is able to move from side to side in a specific axis to allow for kinetic exploration between the observer and the object, creating a unique frame that views a specific point within the surrounding environment.

Set Design In reference to Pacific Overtures, a play by Stephen Sondheim, the story of what occurred during the Treat of Kanagawa talks was described in the play’s song “Someone in a Tree.” The project follows an interpretation and re-imagining of the set and the scene which will be housed and performed at the Newport Opera House in Rhode Island.

IN INTERNSHIP PROJECTS

A collection of the work I did during my internship at P&T Architects and Engineers, Dubai branch.

36

Design Roles As part of a design competition, P&T Architects designed an apartment building as an extension to the Ritz Carlton villa and hotel complex. Working in tandem with the director and the senior architects, I was asked to aid in designing the apartment building. My first task was to create a sketch concept of the overall area of the building and sat with the director and two senior architects to come to a final design concept. Using AutoCAD and SketchUp, I helped in creating and implementing the window and balconies onto the facades of the building and creating a 3D model. To supplement the design, I was asked to collect reference images and Photoshop collages to aid in the 3D visualization of the interior open spaces such as the pool and playground areas as well as the glass lounge space on the top floor. As part of my final task, I designed the submission booklet and the contextual site analysis drawings.
