INTRODUCTION

Assembled in this book are operating and maintenance instructions for the W-9 and WR-9 tractors. This material has been prepared in detail in the hope that it will help you to better understand the correct care and efficient operation of your tractor . . If you should need information not given in thlS manual, or require the services of a trained mechanic, get in touch with the International Harvester dealer in your locality.

Dealers are kept informed on the latest methods of servicing tractors. They carry stocks of IH parts, and are backed in every case by the full facilities of a nearby International Harvester District Office.

Throughout this manual the use of the terms LEFT, RIGHT, FRONT, and REAR must be ~nderstood to .,avoid confusion when following mstructions. LEFT and RIGHT indicate the l~ft and right sides of the tractor when facing forward in the driver's seat. Reference to FRONT indicates the radiator end of the tractor, and REAR the drawbar. See ItINst. 2.

The illustrations in this manual are nUIIlbered to correspond with the pages on which they appear; for example, Illusts. 7, 7A and 7B

are on page 7.

The serial nUIIlber is preceded by the letters WCB for the W -9 and RCB for the WR-9. The engine serial nUIIlber is stamped on the right side of the engine crankcase above the battery ignition unit. See It/ust. 2B. This serial nUIIlber is preceded by the letters WCBM for the W -9 and RCBM for the WR-9.

For ready reference we suggest that you write these serial nUIIlbers in the spaces provided on the Delivery Report.

The headlights and rear light on your tractor are sealed-beam lights especially developed for farming operations. The parts are so constructed that the filament, reflector, lens and gasket are all assembled in a unit permanently sealed against dirt, moisture and corrosion.

If a filament burns out or a lens breaks, the complete unit must be replaced. See your International Harvester dealer.

LUBRICATING OIL AND GREASE SPECIFICATIONS

case oil every time the temperature rises or falls into another temperature range during some part of the Z4-hour day.

Use only high-quality lubricating oils and grease. For your Own protection, select only oils and grease of recognized manufacture.

Use good quality oil, free from solid materials. Keep your supply of lubricating oil absolutely clean and free from dust. Always use clean containers. Keep the lubricator clean and wipe the dirt from the grease fittings before applying the lubricator.

on pa,e 36 for special instructions.

Lubrication Fitting Grease Engine Oil Use pressure-gun grease (chassis lubricant) for lubrication fittings on which the hand lubricator is applied. Keep the lubricator clean and wipe the dirt from the grease fittings befor"e applying -the lubricator.

Engine lubricating oil of regular, premium or heavy-duty grade is satisfactory for use in this engine. The oil should be wellrefined petroleum oil free from water, fatty oils and acids.

Gear Lubricant

To Aid Starting

Tractors shipped from the factory to destinations in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico are filled with SAE-BO regular-type gear lubricant in the transmission, differential and steering gear housing.

To facilitate starting, the selection of crankcase lubricating oils should be based on the lowest anticipated temperature for the day. It is not necessary to change the crank-

The cooling system operates under pressure which is controlled by means of a regulating valve built into the radiator cap. Always use clean water (soft or rain water if possible).

Filling the Cooling System

Adding Water to the Cooling System

1. Be sure the crankcase drain cock on the left side of the engine and the radiator drain pipe cap are closed.

The water capacity of the system is approximately 8-1/2 U.S. gallons.

CAUTION! If the water in the cooling system is hot and water is to be added, observe the following:

2. Remove radiator filler cap "A" (Illust.

35) and fill the radiator to approximately 2-1/4 inches below the top of filler neck "e".

Turn radiator cap "A" (see Illust. 35) slowly counterclockwise to the safety stop to allow the pressure or any steam to escape; then press down on the cap and continue to turn until the cap is free to be removed.

If the motor overheats, allow the engine to cool off before removing the cap to fill the radiator.

When removing the cap, be extremely careful to avoid being scalded by steam which has built up pressure in the radiator.

Before replacing the filler cap, be sure to remove any chaff or dirt particles which may be on the gasket surface or cap, and tighten the cap clockwise to the stop.

NOTE: A pressure-cooled system will not operate properly unless the cooling system is tight. The filler cap must be properly tightened to the stop. The gasket surface of the cap must be in good condition. The system must not have loose connections or leaks. Unless these instructions are followed, pressure will not be maintained, and loss of water and consequent overheating will result.

Allow the engine to cool, and fill the radiator slowly to approximately 2-1/4 inches below the top of filler neck "en. Due to expansion when the system becomes hot, any excess water will be discharged through overflow pipe

NOTE: Do not pour cold water into the radiator if the engine is very hot unless conditions make it absolutely necessary; in which case start the engine and let it idle; then slowly pour the water into the radiator.

Draining the Cooling System 1. Remove the crankcase drain plug on the left side of the engine, and remove the cap from the radiator drain pipe.

Before replacing the filler cap, be sure to remove any chaff or dirt particles which may be on the gasket surface or cap, and tighten the cap clockwise to the stop.

When draining the radiator, remove the filler cap to permit complete draining.

Do not attempt to repair or replace any of the regulating valve parts. If the valve is faulty replace it with a new radiator cap of the same type.

2. See that the drains are not clogged and that the water drains completely. Then replace the pipe cap and close the drain plug.

MAINTENANCE BRAKES (WR-9 Tractor) The WR-9 Tractor is equipped with mechanical-disc-type brakes. The braKes are controlled by foot pedals which can be operated individually, or simultaneously when latched together.

CAUTION! Always latch the brake pedals together when traveling in high gear.

The brakes should not drag and should not have an excessive free movement of the pedals before they take hold. The pedals should have a free movement of 2 to 2-1/4 inches, the measurement to be taken between the points of contact of the brake pedals with the top of the rear frame cover or just enough movement so that when a slight pressure is applied on the brake pedals, the brake lock can be dropped into the first notch in the rack on the right brake pedal.

Brake Adjustment Adjust the free pedal travel of the right brake pedal first as follows: Loosen lock nut "A" (IlZust. 61) then turn ball seat nut "B" until the correct free pedal travel is obtained. Then adjust the free pedal travel of the left brake pedal in the same manner by adjusting the lock nut and ball seat nut at the left brake housing. ~_,

When the correct adjustment has been made, tighten loc:k nut "A".

An optional method of equalizing brake s on tractors equipped with pneumatic tires is to drive the tractor in high gear, and then apply the brakes. If one wheel skids or drags, adjust as described above.

Brake Pedal Lock To lock the brakes, latch both brake pedals together by engaging the locking latch at the back of the pedal pads. Then push th.e pedals down and engage the locking lever.

CAUTION! Always latch the brake pedals together when traveling in high gear.

To obtain equalization of both brakes, it is very important that both brake pedals have the same amount of free movement. A definite way to check the equalizatiOn of brakes is to jack up both rear wheels so they will turn freely, block tractor securely and latch the brake pedals together; then start the engine.

Shift the gears to' either third or fourth speed; engage the clutch; while the wheels are turning apply the brakes. Application of the brakes should slow down both wheels at the same time and also tend to reduce the speed of the engine.

If one wheel stops and the other one continues to revolve when the brakes are applied, loosen the adjustment on the wheel that stops just enough so that both wheels stop simultaneously when the brakes are applied.

IMPORTANT FUEL SYSTEM SAFETY WARNING AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF FREE, REPLACEMENT GASOLINE CAP

A PROBLEM -

CAUTION! The following information pertains to personal safety. Be sure to read and follow these instructions.

Gasoline vapors can build up pressure in your gasoline tank.

All gasoline fuels are more volatile today than ever before. They vaporize and build up pressure in your gasoline tank more easily than in the past.

Winter grade gasoline is especially subject to vaporization and pressure build-up when used on hot Spring or Fall days. If you have a tractor which is out of tune or not PI ~,..,.::rly maintained, it can run hotter and increase vaporization.

Always tighten gas caps securely.

-

Never, under any circumstances, take the gas cap off a hot or running tractor.

-

Never hold over Winter gasoline for use in the Spring. Remove any equipment unnecessary for warm weather operations, such as comfort covers, heat housers, or radiator covers.

-

Maintain equipment properly and pay particular attention to electrical, exhaust, fuel, and cooling systems. Repair or replace frayed electrical wires; leaky exhaust manifolds, gaskets, pipes and mufflers; damaged carburetors, sediment bowls and fuel lines. Be sure radiators are clean inside and out. Clean off any accumulation of trash, oil or grease.

Make sure that fuel cap vent holes are not plugged, gaskets are in good condition, and that cap tangs are firmly riveted. Repair worn, bent, or deformed filler necks and damaged heat shields or shield insulation. If your tractor is not equipped with a heat shield or insulation, install such equipment on applicable models.

-

Be alert to any unusual sights and sounds during operation. If you suspect overheating or pressure build-up in the fuel system, do not touch the cap. Turn off the engine and allow the tractor to cool before you touch the cap.

Fire and personal injury.

If the fuel cap is removed when the gasoline tank is hot and vapor pressure has, under certain circumstances, built up in the tank, this sudden release of pressure could force gasoline out of the tank. If the gas cap is not fully secured and tightened, it could come off the tank, and again, gasoline could escape. This sudden eruption of gasoline exposes the operator to, and may cover him with, liquid fuel and vapors and is a clear fire hazard if a source of ignition is present. A running engine is a source of ignition, as are cigarettes, open flames, sparks or a poorly maintained exhaust system. An immediate fire could occur. The operator or anyone in the area could be burned and suffer serious injury or even death.

Observe the following steps for safe operation:

International Harvester has developed a new gasoline cap designed to improve vapor venting and to inhibit the sudden eruption of liquid fuel if the safety precautions against cap removal are not . observed.

Gasoline Tractor Models Included in Cap

New caps will be exchanged free of charge with owners of certain models of International Harvester farm tractors. To see whether your tractor already has the new cap or to arrange to obtain one, simply contact your local International Harvester dealer. Also ask him for a free International Harvester brochure "New Facts About Fuels" and for free "Warning" decals for all gasoline equipment.

NOTE: New cap will not fit on any of these tractors.

Replace with the following:

The distillate engine manifold is designed so the hot exhaust gases pass around the intake manifold and heat the inco:ming fuel mixture, resulting in maxi:mwn efficiency under all nor:mal operating conditions.

For the improved WR-9 Tractor, use the following instructions instead of those shown under headings in the W -9 and WR-9 Operator's Manual:

The :manifold heat control valve has four adjustment positions: (1) top notch, ''H', hot position; (2) and (3) center notches, "intermediate positions; (4) botto:m notch, "e", cold position. See Il lust. 7B.

Page 5 - nlust. 5 - Location of Controls The ignition switch button is located on the electrical instrwnent panel, to the right of the fuse housing, and not on the control bracket (on the steering post) as illustrated.

With these adjustments, the heat of the manifold can be regulated to suit various operating conditions, which are governed by the prevailing air temperature, the load the engine is handling, and the kind and quality of fuel that is being used.

Replace with the following:

To obtain the most efficient engine performance when operating with distillate or kerosene fuels, set the manifold heat control valve (see Illust. 78) in the position indicated in the chart below for the prevailing air temperature and type of engine load. To do this, loosen the nut on the heat control adjusting lever set screw, loosen the set screw, and :move the adjusting lever to the position selected. Tighten the set screw and the nut.

The manifold should be kept hot at all time s to properly vaporize the heavy fuels and to avoid dilution of the crankcase lubricating oil.
