FLORIDA KEYS GET $60 MILLION IN BUDGET SIGNED BY DESANTIS Funds slashed for college project, transitional housing for older youth JIM McCARTHY jim@keysweekly.com

A

state budget signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on June 29 will send tens of millions of dollars to the Florida Keys.

But not all local projects received state funding.

In total, DeSantis vetoed $1.7 billion from a budget the state Legislature approved during a special session in May. With the governor’s cuts, the total spending for the 2026-27 fiscal year, which begins July 1, will be $117.6 billion.

Among the items vetoed were $3.5 million to update the College of the Florida Keys’ air conditioning system. The college, in its request to the state for funding, said the current infrastructure is “increasingly unable to meet the growing demand for cooling services.” The Legislature included the funding in its approved budget.

The veto didn’t necessarily single out CFK, as roughly 30 other collegerelated projects for about $20 million were axed by the governor.

CFK did receive $11.6 million in operating funds for its baccalaureate programs.

DeSantis also slashed $500,000 for the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter to establish a new transitional living program in the Upper Keys. The shelter originally asked for $1 million but legislators approved $500,000, which DeSantis vetoed. The project would have expanded housing and support services for older youths’ (ages 18-22) transition to independence.

“Right now, they don’t have anywhere to go,” said Ben Kemmer, children’s shelter CEO. “It’s pretty disappointing, but we’re going to make it happen within the next year or two.

strategic plan, so our board is all in on making it happen.”

Kemmer said the organization plans to work with individuals and foundations in the community to get the project off the ground, but they’ll also look to apply for state funding next year.

Vetoes by the governor can be overturned by two-thirds vote of the Florida House and Senate.

Despite these cuts, Florida Keys municipalities and organizations came away with roughly $60 million in funding from the state.

“I think in the big picture we did really well,” state Rep. Jim Mooney told Keys Weekly following the governor’s budget signing. “I’m always disappointed when stuff gets axed, especially for organizations like the children’s shelter.

We’re working with the Department of Health on how to get that request postured for next year.”

“I always said appropriations are not what you run your organization on, as it’s truly icing on the cake,” Mooney continued. “If you get it, good. If you don’t, you

should still be able to operate.”

A program supporting water quality projects in the Keys received $20 million. Known as the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, it allows local municipalities to use state dollars to restore and clean murky canals or improve stormwater infrastructure.

Funds can also be used for land acquisition.

An affordable housing project in Key West received $5 million.

That will allow for the construction of 150 units of housing on land owned by the Monroe County School Board. Employees of the school district would get first priority, followed by local and state government employees and essential service personnel in the county. The district also received $1.75 million for the renovation of Bruce Hall, where staff will relocate from the current administrative building at 241 Trumbo Road, and the historic Reynolds School, the future site for adult education and district maintenance.

FLORIDA FREEDOM TOUR VISITS ISLAMORADA Traveling exhibit explores key chapters in history

T

he Florida Keys History & Discovery Center, in partnership with Islander Resort, welcomed Florida Freedom Tour on June 30 as part of the statewide America 250 commemoration.

A traveling outreach initiative designed to bring history directly to communities across the state, the Florida Freedom Tour’s visit to Florida marked its journey to the 67 counties. The tour features two

mobile exhibits exploring key chapters of Florida history. One focuses on Florida’s role in the American Revolution, while the other highlights the state’s growth and development in the 20th century.

In conjunction with the tour stop, the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center offered free museum admission throughout the day.

BUDGET CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 A total of $10 million in state funds is going toward the Florida Keys Aqueduct’s Crawl Key reverse osmosis plant. The new facility aims to enhance emergency water supply capacity by 4 million gallons, ensuring a continuous and reliable water service to citizens during times of crisis. The project will also address the need for additional water supply due to population growth and provide an additional backup water source to curb reliance on the Biscayne aquifer.

Marathon will get $2.5 million for a deep injection well project, which consolidates effluent from five wastewater treatment plants. Key West received $3 million for a Stock Island landfill remediation feasibility study and $2.5 million for stormwater enhancements, wastewater improvements and phase one of a Mallory Square area pump station and resilience project.

Key Colony Beach got $475,000 for beach water reclamation facility improvements.

A total of $750,000 was secured for local Habitat for Humanity affordable housing projects. And Keys AHEC, now known as Keys Kids Health Centers, received $500,000 to support its children’s medical and dental program.

Funds were also secured for Pigeon Key — $600,000 for a hurricane restoration and protection project —, and $50,000 for a Harry S. Truman Little White House restoration project.

State Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez said she was pleased to see Florida Keys projects funded. She said the state’s investments in the island chain will strengthen critical infrastructure, support the local economy, enhance public safety and improve residents’ quality of life.

FLORIDA KEYS COMMUNITY COLLECTS FOR VENEZUELA FOLLOWING EARTHQUAKE JIM McCARTHY jim@keysweekly.com

F

lorida Keys community members are mobilizing to help the people of Venezuela affected by a pair of powerful earthquakes last week.

Intense searches continue following the 7.2-magnitude and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes on June 24. Buildings collapsed in the capital of Caracas and coastal communities in La Guaira, trapping many people. Death toll reports have grown to 1,700. Some 50,000 people are still missing.

Key Largo Sunset Rotarian Manuela Mobley, whose family lives near the capital, said rescuers are still searching for her cousin and four other people who were in a grocery store in La Guaira during the time of the earthquakes.

“It’s been six days at this point,” she said.

Mobley said the rest of her family is safe and doing OK, although aftershocks are keeping them on edge.

Search-and-rescue teams operating under the U.S. Department of State, including Florida Task Force One and Miami-Dade’s Urban Search & Rescue, descended on the region to help comb through disaster-affected buildings to save the trapped. More than 32 countries are involved in response and relief efforts.

Locally, Mobley has led an effort to establish a collection in the Keys to support the people in Venezuela. She was able to establish a connection with the Caracas Rotary Club District 4370 in order to get food, baby items and other necessities into the hands of those who need them the most.

“My mom helped me to connect with Rotary because her boss is a Rotarian,” she said.

“I wanted to reach out because I obviously wanted to help. But I knew shipping anything there would be expensive. That’s when I found out the shipping company Tealca was sending a container of items there.”

The collection effort has spanned from the Upper to Lower Keys with help from local Rotary clubs. Supplies and financial contributions have been pouring in from generous local residents, including visitors who learned about the efforts through a social media post.

“We’re going to keep on going with the goal to fill the shipping container by July 6.

From there, it will leave Miami to Caracas, where the Rotary club there will collect the boxes and distribute the items to those in need,” Mobley said.

DEALING WITH THE WEEDS County offers guidance on sargassum overload

M

onroe County is coordinating with state regulating agencies and local partners to publish guidance on the widespread influx of sargassum grass affecting oceanside shorelines and canals throughout the Florida Keys.

Sargassum grass is a naturally occurring seaweed found in the ocean that is essential to protecting habitat for a variety of marine life, including sea turtles, crabs, shrimp and other ju-

venile sea creatures. Influxes that wash ashore or into canals can become a nuisance, and as the sargassum decays, it produces a hydrogen sulfide gas.

This year, the influx of sargassum grass is causing periodic inconveniences in some areas and contributing to fish kills.

The county has been coordinating with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which provided staff with an update on current conditions and regulatory guid-

ance. According to DEP, this year’s sargassum bloom is widespread and extends throughout the Keys along the ocean side of the island chain and is expected to continue throughout the summer.

Sargassum grass is protected offshore and regulations govern its removal. Clearing sargassum from canals may provide temporary relief, but it is not a long-term solution.

Additional blooms are anticipated, and removed material will likely be replaced by future influxes. While removal is not suggested, residents should be aware of the state regulations governing sargassum removal.

Health considerations The Florida Department of Health advises that decomposing sargassum can produce hydrogen sulfide gas, which has a strong odor similar to that of rotten eggs. While the gas is generally diluted outdoors, it may irritate the eyes, nose and throat and can affect individuals with asthma or other respiratory

conditions more severely. Residents experiencing irritation are encouraged to limit exposure, avoid direct contact with decomposing seaweed, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.

Monroe County Parks and Beaches crews are continuing onshore sargassum cleanup efforts at Harry Harris Park and other countyowned beaches using county equipment, including clamshell trucks.

Report fish kills and environmental concerns Decomposing seaweed in canals can remove oxygen from the area, causing fish kills. ust weeks before the captain in a fatal Florida Keys parasailing accident was set to stand trial, attorneys are clashing over which federal charges he should face.

A jury trial is set to begin on Monday, July 27 in Key West for Daniel Gavin Couch, who captained Lighthouse Parasail’s M/V Airborne during the Memorial Day 2022 tragedy that killed visiting 33-year-old Supraja Alaparthi.

While taking a flight with her 10-year-old son and 9-year-old nephew in Marathon, a strong gust of wind “pegged” the parasail, rendering the boat’s winch unable to retract the chute and dragging the boat toward shallow flats with 13 passengers aboard. Losing control, Couch cut the line tethering the three victims, who were dragged across the water before colliding with the Old Seven Mile Bridge.

Marathon captain John Callion responded as a Good Samaritan in the area, cutting the three victims free from their harnesses and taking them to shore, where Supraja was pronounced dead.

Already facing civil suits and state manslaughter charges, Couch was indicted in August 2025 on a federal seaman’s manslaughter charge, which applies to cases of unintentional deaths

as a result of maritime misconduct, negligence or inattention. If convicted, the charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.

But one day before attorneys were scheduled to submit jury instructions for an April 20 trial, federal prosecutors told Judge Jose E. Martinez they intended to supersede the original charge. A voluntary manslaughter charge was filed the following day, defined as an intentional killing without malice, typically reserved for killings committed “in the heat of passion,” when the alleged perpetrator loses self-control. The charge carries a 15year maximum prison sentence.

A motion to dismiss the charge filed by federal public defender Ian McDonald argued the new charge was “wholly inapplicable to the facts of this case,” adding details absent from the preliminary incident reports obtained in May 2022 by the Keys Weekly.

According to McDonald’s motion, Couch and his mate Tanner Helmers made four attempts to rescue the passengers after severing the line, trying to deploy a “chute wrangler” safety device that would have deflated and stopped the parasail — a device he says was explained to the passengers in a safety briefing before their flight.

COUNTY M WORKERS GET CPR TRAINING

onroe County Safety and Security staff recently conducted CPR and first aid training for Upper Keys Engineering, Roads and Bridges staff. The hands-on training provided employees with lifesaving skills, including CPR techniques and first-aid response. Staff participated in exercises designed to prepare them for situations they may encounter both on and off the job. ‘Training like this helps our employees be prepared to respond quickly and confidently during emergencies,’ said Monica Calvert, Monroe County Safety and Security coordinator who led the training.

AMBULANCE CORPS, VOLUNTEER FIRE MERGE INTO DISTRICT

n July 1, the Key Largo Fire Rescue and EMS District, the Key Largo Volunteer Ambulance Corps Inc., and the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department Inc. merged into one agency under the umbrella of the Key Largo Fire Rescue and EMS District. This merger creates greater accountability and efficiency.

To help manage the change, the fire district hired Fire-EMS Chief Jeff Morse. He comes to the district with 43 years of experience and said hHe is excited to take on the challenge of bringing the emergency responders together.

One of the challenges the district faced in the merger was the disposition of the old Ambulance Building at 98600 Overseas Highway. The building is owned by the Volunteer Ambulance Corps Inc. The corps offered to sell the building to the district, but the board of commissioners evaluated the condi-

tion of the building, along with the cost of the purchase and the cost of maintenance, and decided it was not cost-effective. Therefore, beginning July 1 the ambulances were moved to Station 24 on 1 East Dr. (at MM 99). This move is expected to save hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next five years without reducing service to the community.

The district continues to serve as a “combination” agency, with both career firefighters and paramedics, as well as volunteer firefighters and paramedics.

Additionally, the district aims to remain heavily involved in the community. In addition to emergency services, it offers CPR training and public education events.

MOSQUITO CONTROL: A CRITICAL SERVICE To the Editors: I have visited and lived in the Florida Keys since 1955 and have seen many changes; some good and some not so good. One of the incredibly positive changes is the huge reduction of mosquitoes and their diseases because of our mosquito control programs.

I have witnessed the transition from a ragtag organization of the 1950s and ’60s to one of the most professionally run and effective government agencies we have in Monroe County, and they have kept us safe. With all the recent discussions in Tallahassee about changes to property taxes, I believe mosquito control must continue to be funded as a critical service.

In the early days, the mosquitoes were so bad that you had to scrape them from your body before going inside. One could look down the street and see the black clouds of mosquitoes.

Everyone went about swatting and displaying many red splotches on their face, arms and legs and we were always concerned about getting sick from their terrible diseases. The Keys were not an attractive place to either live or visit.

To justify living here then, people were always saying, “We have to remember where we live,” or “We chose to live near the Everglades,” or “It’s the price you pay for living in paradise.” Regardless of the rhetoric, the mosquitoes were very bad and often unbearable. Very few residents of the Keys today were here then to fully understand just how bad.

Today, it is quite different.

There are still mosquitoes, but very few by comparison and life is pretty darn good. Many of us would prefer zero mosquitoes, but with all the government-protected land in the Keys, each with its own regulations designed to protect the many endangered species of insects, rats, bees and butterflies, it will never happen.

I live in the Upper Keys, where the protected lands account for most of the total land mass. These state parks, botanical gardens and wildlife preserves are mostly off limits for any type of mosquito control measures. This is part of protecting our environment,

which most of us really appreciate, but it increases the number of mosquitoes in our community.

A major source of mosquitoes in the Keys is the Florida Everglades. I spend a lot of time in the Everglades and at times, the mosquito swarms there remind me of the way the Keys used to be. Today, when the winds are unfavorable, swarms of mosquitoes are blown into the Middle and Upper Keys. Mosquito controllers send out their aircraft and trucks, and the numbers of mosquitoes are reduced significantly. This process is never-ending, and it is complicated by regulatory constraints as well as adverse weather conditions.

I appreciate the dedicated people of mosquito control who come onto our properties, our salt marshes, our offshore islands, etc., take the samples they need, make helpful recommendations and improve our comfort and safety in each neighborhood. It must be a very thankless job, because I see comments on social media from individuals who are frustrated but undoubtedly do not realize the environmental constraints that our mosquito control district must legally abide by.

Even though we still have some mosquitoes, have you looked at the increase in your property values? We have transitioned from a land that few people wanted to some of the most desirable, and therefore most expensive, real estate in the state and nation. This change and the economy it created would never have happened without excellent mosquito control leading the way. If you travel to other parts of Florida, the southeast of the U.S. or other tropical and subtropical countries, you will know what I mean. We must urge Florida’s Legislature to recognize the critical value of mosquito control in their tax legislation.

In closing, I want to simply say thank you to mosquito control for being there every day. You are the unsung heroes who make the Florida Keys a real paradise.

uly 4 marks the 250th year of the United States of America. In Key Largo, the big celebration will coincide with floats, classic cars, lots of candy and plenty of water.

Saturday will mark the 50th iteration of the Fourth of July Parade in Key Largo. Organized by the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, expect to see a large patriotic procession proceeding north on U.S. 1 from Anthony’s Clothing Store to Laguna Avenue.

“Being that it’s America’s 250th, it’s a big moment and everyone wants to be a part of it,” said Suzi Youngberg, president and CEO for the chamber. “We do expect the parade to be the biggest yet.”

From its beginnings 50 years ago,

the parade has turned into a tradition among the Key Largo and Upper Keys community. The procession has evolved with more decorated floats, spectators lining both sides of the parade route on U.S. 1 and a few more Super Soakers in the hands of parade participants and spectators.

“What makes this event so special is the community coming together,” Youngberg said. “There’s so much community involvement and excitement.”

Serving as this year’s parade marshal is David Kay, better known as “Video” Dave. A longtime supporter of the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, he’s filmed and photographed the Key Largo’s biggest event for more than a decade.

“We wanted a true Key Largo community person and he was a natural fit,” Youngberg said.

From all the years filming on the side of the road, Kay said he’s thrilled to be leading the procession while riding in a vehicle this time.

“I love seeing all the people show up and show their patriotism with their colors, flags, and being all together as one big happy family,” Kay said.

The patriotic procession will take off from Anthony’s Clothing Store at 10 a.m. Parade floats will have the chance to vie for best theme, most beautiful, most patriotic, best business, best nonprofit and best overall.

The Freedom Fest family picnic will kick off at Key Largo Community Park. Beginning at 11 a.m., the festivities will include bounce houses for the kids, food and soft drinks and shopping vendors. New this year is watermelon eating, hosted by Houston Insurance Agency. The Key Largo Rotary is sponsoring free hot dogs for those 18 and under. The picnic will conclude at 4 p.m.

“It will be a family-friendly, community atmosphere,” Youngberg said.

The July Fourth festivities will end with a fireworks display over Blackwater Sound. The public is encouraged to view the fireworks, which are sponsored by the Key West International Airport, from their favorite bayfront establishment.

VILLAGE UNVEILS NEW PLAYGROUND AT FOUNDERS ‘THE END’ Librarian retires

ollowing 20 years of biweekly story hours, reading groups and book recommendations, Chris Morgan — also known as “Ms. Chris” — is retiring from her active role as a Keys librarian, during which time she inspired and influenced countless young readers.

“Ms. Chris is a warm, welcoming and patient caring soul who has brought wonder and joy while inspiring imagination each time she has sat down to read a story, sing a song and prepare a craft or activity to engage the little minds who have come into the room,” said Rachel Goodrich, whose four daughters regularly attended story hour, beginning in the first months of their lives.

“The way she fosters interests and teaches each child with intentionality is her gift, along with the super power of remembering each child’s name who comes, whether weekly or seasonal.”

Following the closure of St. Justin Marine Academy, where Morgan worked as a teacher, she joined the staff of the Key Largo library in 2006.

Morgan was closely involved with Upper Keys’ youth, with her biweekly story time, which coupled reading, song and dance, educating children and babies around the ages of four and below.

“That’s where I built most of those (fond) memories,” said Morgan. “It’s amazing to watch the young kids at storytime grow and develop, learn how to clap, sing along, stomp their feet — seeing that growth in them.”

She would also visit Key Largo School to read to the younger grades, encouraging students to check out the library.

last two decades into young adults.

The environment of story time was active and engaged through her guidance.

In addition to the educational development she witnessed in the youth, Morgan recalls many parents and families of story-hour children who developed lasting friendships through these meetings.

In 2022, Morgan moved work to the Islamorada library, which hosted her retirement party on June 3. Current story-hour families, as well as past families and older kids with fond memories attended the event. Key Largo Friends of the Library contributed a scrapbook of photo memories detailing her service to the community.

“I’ll miss seeing the kids. Seeing their hearts and smiles, and watching them grow,” she said. “I’ll see them out in the community, and that will be good. I look forward to that.”

“Ms. Chris has been a valued member of the library team for many years,” said Kimberly Matthews, county senior director of strategic planning and libraries director. “We cannot thank her enough for her dedication and service to our community. She has touched the lives of many.”

lay at Founders Park reached a new level on June 29, as village officials cut the ribbon on a new customized playground. Kids flocked to the slides, swings, sensory panels and new climbing structures as local community members and village staff celebrated the completion of an $600,000 project. With a soft turf surface and plenty of areas to explore, the playground was constructed by Playmore Recreational Products & Services. A total of $497,771 was funded by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. The playground is located where beach volleyball was formerly played. The court is now located where the playground once stood.

COUNTY OFFERS UPDATE ON ROWELL’S PARK CONSTRUCTION DELAY

A

project to transform a bayside park in Key Largo has faced a bit of a delay, as the Monroe County Parks & Beaches recently offered an update on the status.

According to the county department, construction at Rowell’s Waterfront Park was halted after an issue was identified that required a redesign of the second phase. During the redesign, the county was awarded additional grant funding, allowing project management and parks and beaches to incorporate several enhancements beyond the original plan.

With additional grant funding, the park design includes a small dog park, field lighting, upgraded turf for the multi-use field, improved benches, new trash receptacles and enhanced landscaping.

Phase three will add shade structures, a playground and a large tiki hut. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2027 after phase two is complete.

The park is open from 7:30 a.m. to sunset, with limited parking available during construction. Because of construction, the park will not be open after hours on the Fourth of July.

slamorada will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a patriotic celebration at Founders Park on July 4.

Presented by the Village of Islamorada and Upper Keys Rotary Club, the festivities will run from 6 to 10 p.m. and will include diverse food options, family-fun activities and a fireworks display that’ll illuminate the night sky.

There will also be plenty of red, white and blue on display with the Patriotic People and Puppy costume contest and parade at the amphitheater. The best-dressed can enter a costume contest, which is set to take place at 7:30 p.m. Entry is free, and register by 7 p.m. at the stage. All dogs must be leashed, be sociable with other dogs and be comfortable around kids and loud music.

Winners will be awarded for adults, or “Roman candle,” kids, the “Sparkler” division, dogs, the “Rocket Paws” division and humans and dogs together, the “Firecracker” category.

Food trucks will be positioned on the park’s great lawn. Thirstquenching drinks, from beer and water to rum punch and soda, will be available for purchase.

With live entertainment also comes face painting and inflatable activities.

Capping off the festivities will be a fireworks display sponsored by the Key West International Airport.

The display will begin shortly after sunset.

Attendance is free, but parking on the grounds will be for a $10 donation. Festival goers are asked not to bring coolers or glass containers. And no personal fireworks will be allowed in the park.

In an effort to shine a spotlight on more of the incredible individuals who live and work in these islands, Keys Weekly is proud to present our Neighbor of the Week feature, dedicated to celebrating a community member with each issue.

Our neighbor of the week is Jodie Cerra, who serves as the executive director of the Islamorada-based Florida Bay Forever, a nonprofit founded in 2016 to increase awareness of the issues affecting Florida Bay. Raised in West Palm Beach, she graduated from Florida State University with degrees in psychology and English. She earned certifications in Project WILD and Aquatic WILD through the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies. She lives in Tavernier with her husband Ray, maintenance director at Theater of the Sea, and their sons, Bamboo and Orion.

How long have you lived in the Keys? Almost 20 years.

What drew you to the Keys? I applied for internship opportunities and was selected for two, one at SeaWorld in Orlando and one at MarineLab in Key Largo. It was a hard decision to make, but I decided to lean into science and go to the Keys. I met a local, married and here I am raising a family and doing work I am passionate about.

What led you to be in the occupation you’re in? A desire to make a difference. As my kids got older and I was done homeschooling, I wanted to find a job where I could be paid for saving the ocean. I was originally

When the previous director left, I built on my background as an educator and nature lover to become the ED. What do you enjoy most about your work? I’ve loved every minute of this work. My father was an educator for 40-plus years and heavily influenced me. I love being able to talk with people of all ages while teaching them about our unique environment.

Weirdest experience you’ve had in the Keys? In my 20s, I was coming out of Coconut’s bar and ran into people who sold bonds to get people out of jail. They needed a ride to their hotel so I gave them one. We got to talking and they invited me to the hotel bar for a drink. The very next day, I got a flat tire while driving and guess who saved me — the people I gave a ride to.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? Definitely my grandma. I have so many questions for her now that I am older and raising a family.

If you had a superpower, what would it be? Eliminating the use of plastics.

Favorite food? Lobster, seafood and fish.

Favorite movie/book? The 1947 classic children’s book, “Good Night Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown. My mom and mother-in-law often read this book to my boys. I love the image of the moon over the ocean and the generational feel-good vibe of the book. I love that it connected my kids to the outdoors.

What are your hobbies? Raising my kids and working for Florida Bay. I love diving and being on the water. It is my peaceful place. I also write and draw for my own enjoyment.

Is there a skill/talent you want to master? Self-confidence.

What are you most proud of as you look back on your life this far? Knowing I can do pretty much anything I want if I set my mind to it.

I work toward a goal and accomplish it. I hope to inspire this in my kids as well.

Do you have any regrets? I wonder how things might be different if my decisions were different, like if I choose SeaWorld. I have no regrets, only try to learn how I could have done better and use those lessons to do better.

What is the biggest daily challenge you face? Fundraising. Everything goes back to funding.

THE HYDRATION ILLUSION I

n the Florida Keys, hydration gets treated like a personality trait.

Everyone has a giant water bottle. Everyone is tracking ounces. Everyone is adding powders, drops, minerals, packets, lemons, cucumbers and someJENNIFER times what appears to be HARVEY an entire produce aisle ...is a Marathoninto their cup. based ACSMAnd listen, I love the certified pereffort.

Highly Motivated They are not always the Functionally same thing. Hydration is Caffeinated LLC. not just about what goes into your body. It is about what your body can absorb, hold on to and actually use.

This matters, especially down here, where summer does not politely arrive. It sits on your chest at 8:30 in the morning and asks if you have any errands to run.

Your body is mostly water, but it is not just a walking cooler. Water helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, support digestion, lubricate joints, maintain blood volume and keep your brain from feeling like it is operating on dial-up internet. So yes, water matters. But the science of hydration is more interesting than “drink more water.”

Your body has a built-in hydration management system, and one of the major players is a hormone called ADH, which stands for antidiuretic hormone. Its job is basically to tell your kidneys, “Hang on to some of that water. We may need it.” When ADH is doing its job, your kidneys reabsorb more water instead of sending it all straight to your bladder.

But alcohol suppresses ADH. That means your kidneys stop holding on to water as well, and you start producing more urine.

This is one reason a night of drinks can turn into multiple bathroom trips, dry mouth, a pounding headache and a next-day personality best described as “fragile.”

Caffeine can also increase urine output, especially in higher amounts or in people who are not used to it. Coffee is not evil.

Please do not panic. I am not here to take away your morning joy. But if your entire hydration strategy is iced coffee, a spicy margarita, and one emotionally supportive sip of water at 4 p.m., we may need to talk.

Here is where people get confused. They pee constantly and think, “Wow, I must be so hydrated.” Not necessarily. Peeing all the time does not automatically mean your body is hydrated. It may mean water is passing through you faster than your body can use it.

Normal urine output for adults is often around 800 to 2,000 milliliters per day, depending on fluid intake, body size, temperature, activity and health status. Producing more than about 3 liters of urine a day is considered polyuria, which is the scientific way of saying that is a lot of pee.

So, if you are running to the bathroom three times in an hour and proudly announcing it to everyone within earshot, first of all, you do not have to declare every bathroom trip. We believe you. Second, more pee does not always equal better hydration. Sometimes it means your body is losing fluid faster than it can hold on to it.

Now add heat.

When you are outside in 90-degree weather with heavy humidity, your body sweats to cool you down. The problem is humidity makes sweat less effective because it does not evaporate as easily. So, your body keeps trying. More sweat. More fluid loss. More stress on your system. For people working outside, this adds up fast.

Hello, construction workers, landscapers, postal workers, boat captains, fishing guides, roofers, pool cleaners, delivery drivers, dog walkers and anyone else earning a living while the rest of us are sprinting from the air-conditioned car to the air-conditioned grocery store.

The CDC recommends that people working in the heat drink about 8 ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes. That comes out to roughly 24 to 32 ounces per hour. Multiply that by an eight-hour workday and you are looking at 192 to 256 ounces of fluid, or roughly 1.5 to 2 gallons.

And that is not for someone running an ultramarathon. That is basic heat safety for people doing their jobs in hot conditions.

This is why hydration cannot be treated like a cute wellness trend. It is not just about clear skin and matching your tumbler to your outfit. It is blood volume. Brain function. Muscle function. Temperature regulation. Heart rate. Energy. Safety.

And here is the other piece most people miss: Water needs minerals to work well.

Sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride are electrolytes. They help move fluid in and out of cells, support muscle contractions, regulate nerve signals and help maintain fluid balance. This does not mean everyone needs to walk around drinking neon-colored sports drinks. But it does mean that if you are sweating heavily, working outside, exercising in the heat, drinking alcohol, drinking a lot of caffeine or peeing every 14 seconds, plain water may not be enough.

Your body does not just need water. It needs water with a plan.

That plan may look like salting your food appropriately, eating fruits and vegetables, drinking consistently throughout the day, adding electrolytes when sweat loss is high and paying attention to what your body is actually telling you.

Hydration is not a moral victory. It is not a competition. It is not about having the biggest water bottle in the room. It is a relationship with your body. A quiet, daily way of saying, “I am paying attention.”

So yes, drink the water. But do not assume every bathroom trip is proof that you are winning hydration. Sometimes your body is not asking for more water to pass through.

Sometimes it is asking for help holding on.

oftball talent runs strong in the Florida Keys, and this season’s All-Keys team reflects the depth, versatility and competitive spirit found throughout Monroe County.

Key West led the way with a 17-10 record, capturing district and regional championships and advancing to the FHSAA Class 4A Final Four. Marathon finished 13-5 while competing in the Rural Class 1A bracket, and Coral Shores posted a 10-4 mark as an independent program.

From dominant pitchers and power hitters to speedy baserunners and dependable defenders, athletes from all three schools helped showcase the strength of softball across the island chain. This year’s squad features a blend of proven veterans and rising stars who made their mark throughout the 2026 season.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

BRIANNA BRENNER Junior, Key West Pitcher Brenner was the driving force behind Key West’s remarkable postseason run, dominating in the circle with a 1.75 ERA and an 11-2 record over 23 appearances. The junior logged 124-1/3 innings, striking out 124 batters while recording 8 ½ shutouts and a pair of no-hitters.

Intense yet composed, Brenner embraced the heavy workload placed upon her and delivered time and again. A leader in every sense, she set the tone for the Lady Conchs with her work ethic, competitiveness and poise under pressure.

ADDISON GRADY Sophomore, Coral Shores Infield One of the Hurricanes’ most dangerous offensive players, Grady batted .548 with a .642 on-base percentage.

She scored 20 runs, collected 23 hits and drove in 16 runs while adding four doubles, two home runs and 15 stolen bases.

LILEE GAGE Junior, Key West Outfield Gage provided a steady presence in the outfield and delivered timely offense for the Lady Conchs. She scored 20 runs, drove in 13 and added two home runs while posting an outstanding .980 fielding percentage defensively.

MAICEE GAGE Junior, Key West Outfield A consistent contributor at the plate, Gage hit .351 with 22 runs scored, 27 hits and 18 RBIs. She added extra-base power with doubles and two home runs while providing dependable defense in the outfield.

ARIANNA GARCIA Sophomore, Key West Infield Garcia emerged as one of Key West’s top offensive threats, batting .373 with 27 hits and 18 RBIs. The sophomore added eight doubles, a triple and two home runs while providing versatility in the infield.

KALEYA CERVANTES Junior, Key West Infield Cervantes contributed in all phases of the game, batting .293 with 19 runs scored and 22 hits. Her patience at the plate led to 11 walks, and her steady play helped anchor the Lady Conchs’ infield.

CHARLIE BRACHER Freshman, Key West Designated Hitter Bracher made an immediate impact in her first varsity season, batting .441 with a .578 on-base percentage and an impressive .882 slugging percentage. The freshman drove in 17 runs and launched three home runs, establishing herself as one of the area’s top young hitters.

PRESSLEY BAGWELL Senior, Coral Shores Pitcher Bagwell contributed both in the circle and at the plate for the Hurricanes. She hit .353 with seven stolen bases while also striking out 31 batters over 32-1/3 innings pitched, providing valuable senior leadership throughout the season.

SARA ROBINSON Junior, Marathon Infield Robinson batted .312 and drove in 19 runs while reaching base at a .507 clip. A vocal leader in the infield, she consistently helped position teammates and brought energy and awareness to the Dolphins’ defense.

MAEVE MERRYMAN Junior, Marathon Outfield Marathon’s leadoff hitter, Merryman used her speed to spark the offense. She batted .360, scored 32 runs and stole 29 bases, making her one of the Keys’ most dynamic players once she reached base.

SHYLO SANCHEZ Senior, Key West Catcher The lone senior on Key West’s roster, Sanchez provided leadership and consistency behind the plate. She hit .403 with a .549 on-base percentage and set a new school record with 22 walks in a season. Her intelligence and experience proved invaluable to the Lady Conchs.

Tips to stay cool during intense heat Experts are warning that dangerously high temperatures are headed to Florida this weekend.

The American Red Cross of South Florida urges everyone to take three critical actions to stay safe: • Stay hydrated by drinking a cup of water every 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Avoid sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks.

• Stay cool by spending time in air-conditioned places. If your home is too hot, go to a library or cooling center.

• Stay connected by checking on others and asking for help if you need it. Make sure pets have access to fresh water and shade.

“Knowing what to do to protect yourself and loved ones from extreme heat can save lives,” said Monica Rusconi, regional disaster officer. “We’re asking everyone to check on friends and neighbors, especially older adults, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers and athletes. You could make all the difference by sending a text, making a call or knocking on their door.”

El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, a naturally recurring global climate pattern characterized by above-average seasurface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.

The eastern equatorial winds that typically keep the warmer waters near Oceania in the western Pacific Ocean weaken and allow these warmer waters to migrate eastward to South America.

The phenomenon typically develops every two to seven years and can alter weather patterns across much of the world. Unfortunately, these warmer water temperatures can push corals beyond their thermal limits, triggering mass coral bleaching. Since 1998, every strong El Niño condition has led to a global coral bleaching event. The good news is that the El Niño weather pattern reduces predicted hurricane activity in the Atlantic Ocean; however, it is still wise to be wary, since Hurricane Andrew (1992) was during an El Niño pattern.

What is coral bleaching?

Coral bleaching occurs when corals become stressed by unusually warm water and expel the microscopic symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae living within their tissues. These microalgae provide corals with more than 90% of their food supply, and when they are absent, corals cannot feed efficiently.

In addition, without the zooxanthellae, the coral polyps lose their vibrant colors and become transparent, which causes them to appear bleached and you can see the white coral skeleton underneath. Corals can recover from bleaching, but during the event they are more vulnerable to other stressors and the lack of food can lead to mortality.

The longer the higher temperatures persist, and the higher the degrees of heating, the greater the likelihood a coral will not be able to survive a marine heat wave. NOAA Coral Reef Watch monitors conditions that can cause coral bleaching and has a global early-warning system with near-real-time sea surface temperature data. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary has 17 in-water ocean monitoring sites and you cansee current underwater temperatures at aqualink.org/collections/811.

Fourth global coral bleaching event During the summer and fall of 2023, Florida’s coral reef was part of the fourth global coral bleaching event fueled by the previous El Niño. If the Florida Keys experience another El Niño beginning this summer, that we could have another marine heat wave similar to that of 2023. Florida’s coral reef protects our beaches and coastlines by reducing effects of direct wave action and flooding. This protects infrastructure and economic activity along our coasts. Healthy coral reefs dissipate 97% of the wave energy that would otherwise erode beaches and cause property damage. Annually, coral reefs in Florida protect more than $675 million worth of property and economic activity from flooding.

From 2023 to 2025, the earlier El Niño fueled the fourth global coral bleaching event that affected coral reefs across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans and reached an unprecedented scale. NOAA reports

that coral bleaching-level heat stress affected some 84% of the world’s coral reef area between early 2023 and mid-2025, with mass bleaching documented in at least 83 countries and territories. Despite the severity of the event, scientists have identified some reefs that demonstrated surprising resilience.

Researchers are investigating why certain coral communities survived extreme heat while others suffered extensive bleaching.

Understanding these natural resistance mechanisms could help guide future restoration and conservation efforts. Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. They provide habitat for thousands of marine species, protect coastlines from storms and erosion, and support fisheries and tourism industries worth billions of dollars annually.

ome of the University of Miami’s biggest sports legends descended upon Islamorada for three days of fun and fishing. Held June 25-27, the 2026 Fan Fest and Celebrity Fishing Tournament began with a party and meet-and-greet at the Ocean View Inn & Sports Pub, owned by Gary Dunn, UM alum and Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fans and locals had the chance to meet Jimmy Johnson, national champion coach with the University of Miami and two-time Super Bowl-winning coach with the Dallas Cowboys; and Hurlie Brown, Ricou deShaw, Randal “Thrill” Hill and Mark Cooper. A captain’s gathering was held on June 26 at Three Waters Resort, and the fishing and weigh-in took place the following day at the resort. The star-studded event was sponsored by Spencer “CaneDoc” & Martha Kellogg and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

ith light winds out of the east, 67 anglers boarded 24 boats for the Florida Keys Elks Lodge’s 12th annual Ladies Dolphin Tournament, presented by Townsend Plumbing, on June 13.

The combined weight of three fish would decide the winners in this oneday fishing event.

When the weigh scales closed, there was a tie for first place. Since ties are decided on time, the win went to team Smile Maker. Fish captain Zachary Sullivan, aboard the family’s boat, with mates Bill Sullivan and Carlos Torres, weighed in first and received a check for $3,000 along with a $200 gift certificate to Islamorada Fishing Outfitters and the first-place captain award, a Pasta Pantaleo print.

Anglers Jennifer and Brianna Sullivan from Naples and Missie Schneider from Gainesville weighed three fish totaling 23 pounds. First-place tiaras and trophies, sponsored by Townsend Plumbing, and bouquets of roses were awarded to the winners along with a large travel bag full of valuable prizes from local merchants.

Anglers Astin Leatherman from Vero Beach was fishing with friends Lauren Hall from Tavernier and Stacy Terry from Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

Their three fish totaled 21.9 pounds, winning them $1,000, awards and a bag full of goodies.

The tournament kicked off at the Florida Keys Elks Lodge 1872 on June 12, with two tables full of food and a boatload of shrimp. The Catch in Key Largo catered for an awards dinner on June 13 that was followed by a delicious dessert.

“The Elks have such worthy charities that this event will help to support, including the kids therapy van and a summer camp for local students,” said tournament director Dianne Harbaugh. “The success of this event was the result of a lot of hard work from a great team of people who all came together and put on a tremendous show.”

STATE CONTEST SEEKS TO RID EVERGLADES OF PYTHONS

T

here’s a contest in Florida with prizes for those who remove invasive Burmese pythons from the Ever-

glades.

Dubbed the Florida Python Challenge, registered participants will be able to collect the nonnative species beginning Friday, July 10 at 12:01 a.m. through Sunday, July 19 at 5 p.m. The contest — with a $10,000 grand prize — is hosted by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the South Florida Water Management District. A highlight of this year’s event is the return of Everglades National Park as a partner and one of eight official Florida Python Challenge competition locations.

Registration recently opened for this year’s 10-day event and will remain open until the last day of the competition on July 19. Visit flpythonchallenge.org to register and take the required online training, as well as get access to educational information on Burmese pythons and the unique Everglades ecosystem, optional training opportunities, and resources for planning travel to South Florida for the event.

Burmese pythons are not native to Florida and harm native wildlife.

This invasive species is found primarily in and around the Everglades ecosystem in South Florida where they prey on birds, mammals and other reptiles. A female Burmese python may lay 50 to over 100 eggs at a time.

“We look forward to the challenge each year as a way to raise awareness about nonnative fish and wildlife, while also encouraging the public to get involved in Everglades conservation by removing invasive Burmese pythons,” said Roger Young, FWC executive director.

Last year, participants removed a competition record of 294 invasive Burmese pythons from the Everglades, resulting in a total of 1,406 of the nonnative constrictors being removed cumulatively during all competitions so far. In 2025, 934 people from 30 states and Canada registered for the 10-day competition.

In addition to python removal opportunities on 32 FWC-managed lands which are available yearround, Burmese pythons may be humanely killed on private land at any time with landowner permission and no permit or hunting license required.

The California woman went viral last year for putting up billboards along U.S. Highway 101 with her photo and a link to a website where potential suitors could submit dating applications. Eight months and almost $7,000 later, Catalano is off the market, People reported on June 24. She footed the bill for advertising -- including billboards, taxi ads and the website -- along with wardrobe, makeup, video shoots and related equipment. Mini Fact: Staying safe is an important part about enjoying summer.

ots of people look forward to summer, but it can be a dangerous season. Experts say that between May and August, more kids are injured or die from accidents than at any other time during the year. This week, The Mini Page is sharing some safety tips to help keep everyone safe this summer.

Swimming safety While a lot of kids look forward to summer and spending time at the pool, lake or ocean, it’s important to be careful. Experts say more drowning deaths occur in the summer than at any other time of year.

Tips: Walk around a pool (don’t run); don’t go swimming alone; make sure if you dive that you’re diving in areas that are clearly marked for it; never swim under a diving board; and always make sure an adult is near and watching when you’re swimming.

Sun safety With the warmer weather during the summer, people often spend more time outside, but again, it’s important to be safe.

Experts recommend applying sunblock 30 minutes before you go outside. The higher the sun protection factor (SPF), the more your skin will be protected from the sun.

Tips: Wear hats; apply sunblock; drink lots of water; take breaks; and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Poison plants safety Some plants cause itchy rashes for 1 out of every 2 Americans.

Poison ivy and poison oak are vines or low shrubs with leaves growing Poison ivy in groups of three. Plants can have greenish-white berries.

Poison sumac is a short tree with pairs of leaves of seven to 12 leaflets.

It has grayish berries, which it drops.

Poison oak Harmless sumacs have red berries.

Tips: Be cautious about which plants you touch outside. If you think you have touched one of these plants, wash with soap and water right away.

Your clothes should be washed, too.

Fireworks safety Fireworks are pretty to look at but can be dangerous. They should be handled only by adults.

Did you know sparklers can burn as hot as 2,000 degrees and can easily set clothes on fire and even melt some types of metal? According to experts, sparklers are responsible for 1,400 eye injuries per year.

Fireworks that don’t go off should be soaked in water.

Tips: Read all fireworks’ directions with an adult before using them; keep a bucket of water nearby for emergencies; and never point fireworks at anyone.

Tips for adults • Make sure that all fence gates and doors will latch securely.

• Before children use their bikes, skateboards or Rollerblades this summer, make sure they have helmets that properly fit and have straps that fasten for safety. Check to make sure brakes are working correctly. Go over bike safety precautions with children to make sure they understand.

• Check that play equipment is in good working order, including bolts and hooks on play sets.

• Lock up grills, gasoline containers, lighters and matches.

• Never leave children alone in or near water. Kids can drown in just a few seconds in as little as 1 inch of water.

• Don’t let kids dive or jump into water that is less than 9 feet deep. Also, remind children not to jump into the water toward other people.

• Learn CPR. • Keep emergency service numbers in your phone.

• If visiting the ocean, be aware of underwater currents and waves. Don’t allow children to dive facefirst into waves.
