An auction ending the night of Feb. 15 set a Guinness world record for the most expensive single trading card sale of all time.

Logan Paul’s Pikachu Illustrator Pokemon card, graded in a perfect Gem Mint 10 condition by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), climbed well north of $16 million in the live-streamed auction. It’s a handsome profit for Paul, who purchased the card for $5.275 million in 2021.

Water main replacement project moves to Tavernier

From Tea Table Relief at MM 79.5, contractors for the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority began placing 36-inchdiameter steel pipes in 2023 to replace an aged line. Working their way through Upper Matecumbe and Windley Keys, crews recently finished placing several miles of new water transmission main from the southern end of Plantation Key at Snake Creek Bridge to Tavernier Creek Bridge.

Crews placed more than 10 miles of new transmission into the ground in the last three years. A pricey replacement, each mile of new pipe costs $10 million.

Some of the recent work at the northern end of Plantation Key experienced delays due to king tide flood and unanticipated utility conflicts. Overall, Greg Veliz, FKAA executive director, said the projects in Islamorada have gone better than he could have expected.

“We’ve had a lot more good spots than bad spots,” he said. “At the end of the day, 20% of the pipeline was replaced in three years. … I see that as impressive.”

trench, a method FKAA says ensures the pipe’s not compromised by the Keys’ aggressive soils and subterranean tidal flows. The pipe is cathodically protected, intended to prevent corrosion over time.

At Tea Table Relief and Tavernier Creek Bridge, crews installed the water main underwater via horizontal direction drill. The pipe will be protected from high winds and storm surges. With work complete in Islamorada, construction crews shifted to the northern end of Tavernier Creek Bridge to install the new main to Julep Road in Tavernier. The installation is approaching the Ocean Boulevard intersection. Motorists traveling up U.S. 1 to Tavernier are experiencing traffic delays, with one lane shut down from the southern end of Tavernier Creek Bridge to Ocean Boulevard to allow for the installation work.

In addition, left turns out of Tavernier Towne Plaza’s southern exit will be blocked from Sunday through Thursday from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., through March. Per the Florida Department of Transportation, left turns are not permitted in the work zone. Similar left turns will soon be disallowed out of the plaza’s other exit near McDonald’s. FKAA said a flagger and police officers are on site at these exits Sunday through Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. to assist with traffic flow.

FKAA said the speed limit is 35 mph through the work zone. Access to all businesses will be maintained and businesses will be notified in advance of work near their location.

Veliz said he appreciates the collaboration and cooperation among Islamorada village officials, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Monroe County school district.

Originally scheduled to be completed in March 2026, the water main replacement is now expected to finish in April. Veliz said FKAA is working to secure grant funding to begin the next water main replacement, south of MM 79. The project will replace 7 miles of aged pipe and cross four bridges. The project price tag is $88 million.

“People ask me all the time, ‘When will you be done?’ If we do it right, never,” Veliz said. “If we do this correctly and the money holds, by the time we get done replacing all the Keys it’ll be time to replace it again.”

A PRESIDENTIAL PIT STOP

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis unveils James Monroe statue

ALEX RICKERT

Astatue of Monroe County’s namesake now graces the side of the Overseas Highway by the old Bahia Honda Bridge, after a visit from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Presidents Day.

Addressing Monroe County dignitaries with Secretary of State Cory Byrd and Visit Florida president and CEO Bryan Griffin, DeSantis unveiled the statue of founding father James Monroe, the United States’ fifth president from 1817 to 1825. The installation is the latest in a series of statues announced last year, placed in Florida counties named after the founding fathers.

Serving in both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, Monroe held positions including Virginia’s senator and governor, secretary of war under James Madison, and secretary of state, also under Madison.

In addition to aiding in negotiations for the Louisiana Purchase, he was a pivotal figure in the signing of the Adams-Onis Treaty in 1819, in which Spain ceded Florida to the United States.

“His Monroe Doctrine established our country as the guardian of the hemisphere,” said DeSantis, referencing the president’s foreign policy position opposing further European influence and colonization in the Americas. He related the philosophy to the recent capture of former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro.

“You see some of these elections that are happening, and you’re starting to see the tide shift, but I think it’s clear that we are not going to allow people into the hemisphere,” he said. “It was the right policy then, and remains the right policy now. There’s not many things you can say over 200 years ago were laid down and that we should continue kind of doing the same thing.”

“(Monroe) obviously had a huge impact by making sure that Florida became part of the American republic, and we’re proud to honor him today,” the governor concluded.

“Florida exists because of President James Monroe – the actions he took to negotiate the Adams-Onis Treaty, to acquire the Florida territory, and then under his leadership, ultimately see through to the territory being estab-

lished on March 30, 1822,” said Griffin, referencing the merging of East and West Florida.

Located on the ocean side at the west end of the bridge, the statue is part of the newly-christened Spottswood Heritage Trail, named in honor of former Monroe County Sheriff and State Senator John M. Spottswood.

“Monroe County is proud to receive a little part of 1776 history in the Florida Keys,” said Monroe County Mayor Michelle Lincoln in a press release. “This monument highlights our local heritage and also the role the Florida Keys played in the broader story of our nation as it grew.”

The statue is part of Florida’s commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, with more events and details throughout the year available at america250fl.com.

An update on Islamorada’s comprehensive plan, recognition of a local artist and a public plea for the village to keep a local environmental nonprofit at Green Turtle Hammock Preserve were among the highlights at a Feb. 10 village council meeting.

Planning director Jennifer DeBoisbriand said the village was fielding questions regarding the status of a new comprehensive plan, which is under development with help from Able City East. Last March, Islamorada residents voiced their opinions to the Miami-based firm on everything from development and vacant parcels to traffic during a series of meetings.

The year 2001 was the last time the village adopted a comprehensive plan, which provides the residential and business community, as well as the village council, staff and other advisory boards a tool to guide decision-making and development. DeBoisbriand said village staff received a draft for review last September. She said Able City East was supposed to get her a final draft for review by the public and council in the coming week.

“Once I receive that draft it will be posted to the website, and council will receive a copy as well,” DeBoisbriand said. “We will move forward with scheduling a public workshop for public input on that draft with Able City. They will then take that feedback and create another.”

From there, the updated comprehensive plan draft would go to the village Local Planning Agency for review before going to the council.

“There’s still a lot of public input and public information gathering to happen,” she said.

Village Attorney John Quick said the village is still waiting for state legislators to fix a bill passed last year preempting local municipalities from adopting regulations on development after natural disasters.

In other matters, residents spent a portion of the public comment period voicing their support for Florida

Bay Forever (FBF) at the Russell Cottage at Green Turtle Hammock Preserve. FBF’s lease expires in March, and village officials want to see if there are other nonprofits that may want to use the facility.

FBF says it has led environmental education from the Russell Cottage, consistently meeting its obligations while expanding access, interpretation and learning. Since last year, FBF has welcomed more than 3,800 visitors and operated a staffed visitor center seven days a week.

Jodie Cerra, FBF executive director, said the organization has helped keep the village property active and educational. It’s also a place where many students and visitors connect with the environment. In addition, she said, FBF has a restoration project involving mangroves approved and ready to go. She asked the council to support a renewed agreement for FBF’s use of the Russell Cottage.

Councilwoman Anna Richards said she’s been working with Emily Rother, village arts and cultural coordinator, for the past month to dress up the Founders Park Community Center with artwork from local creators. Recently, artist Pasta Pantaleo donated a “Keys to Life” painting depicting a mangrove. Pantaleo said he came to the Keys and opened his first gallery, Keys to Life, across from the Ocean View Inn & Sports Pub some 20 years ago.

Pantaleo said he named his painting after his journey to the Keys and the way mangroves protect and support the environment. The painting will be on permanent display in the community center.

CORAL SHORES DRAMA CLUB PRESENTS ‘IN THE HEIGHTS’

High-energy musical opens Feb. 27

At the Coral Shores High School performing arts center, drama club actors have spent the last several months developing their characters and perfecting their Latin dance moves.

The upbeat and relatable “In the Heights” musical opens to audiences on Friday, Feb. 27. Members of the drama club picked the show and they are pouring their hearts into every scene.

“I wanted them to do something they wanted to do, so they would love it,” said Coral Shores High School drama teacher Caitlin Yong.

“In the Heights” highlights different narratives of the Latino community in Washington Heights, a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in Upper Manhattan, New York City.

“The overarching story is about community and how family and community comes first,” said Yong.

A cast of 20 onstage performers and 10 support personnel have been working tirelessly to bring the heartfelt story of a vibrant community to light.

Coral Shores seniors Mia Feola and Jayden Angel have never been in a drama club production, but decided to audition and were given parts in the musical.

“It’s really something I never thought I’d do,” said Feola. “It’s definitely out of my comfort zone, so that’s been challenging, but it’s been more rewarding than anything.”

“My family is so happy that I’m doing something that I finally like and that I’m expressing myself in ways I never have before,” said Angel.

“I come from a Hispanic background too, so they’re very excited to watch it,” he said.

The show’s characters are complex and the choreography is challenging. Key Largo’s Spotlight Dance Studio owner Andrea Galvan is helping students find the beat.

“We’ve had to work on getting ourselves feeling the rhythm of the music,” said Coral Shores junior Mallory Hughes. “The Latin part of the dancing is so critical to the show.”

“You’ve got to pay attention, feel the rhythm in your body and just keep going with it,” added Coral Shores sophomore Garrett Gomila.

Senior Karalynn Vaughn said the show hits home with her and she believes it will strike a chord with audiences.

“I think the Latin aspects of the show really do resonate with me. My family is from Puerto Rico and Panama,” said Vaughn. “There are a lot of moments in the show that have commentary on things we may be dealing with today in the world.”

Senior Gavin Milne also believes audiences will connect with “In The Heights” and enjoy themselves at the same time.

“I’m really happy to be here for my senior show,” said Milne. “It’s going to be a great time and inspiring to a lot of people.”

Performances will take place on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28 and March 6-7 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 1 and March 8 at 2:30 p.m.

All performances will take place at the performing arts center.

Tickets are $10 in advance at keysschools. revtrak.net. Once on the site, select Coral Shores High School, Music, Band and Drama. The tickets are redeemable for any performance and purchasers are asked to put their name in the text box. Tickets at the door will be $15.

FOOD WASTE DROPOFF PILOT PROGRAM

EXTENDED TO FEB. 27

Monroe County, in partnership with SoilMate Composting and sponsored by Baptist Health South Florida, is extending its Upper Keys Food Waste Collection Pilot through Feb. 27, thanks to a donation from a local resident.

The pilot project allows residents to divert food scraps from landfills and turn them into nutrient-rich compost. The extension provides additional weeks for participants to drop off food waste at designated sites, as Monroe County evaluates long-term options to reduce landfill use and help address South Florida’s regional trash challenges.

Residents must register to participate and may drop off food waste free at any of the following Upper Keys locations:

• Ocean Studies Charter School –11-27 Rock Harbor Drive, Key Largo (behind playground).

• Atlantic Trash and Transfer – 300 Atlantic Drive, Key Largo.

• Coral Isles Church – 90001 Overseas Highway, Tavernier (behind fellowship hall).

Biodegradable bags are available at all locations. Only food scraps will be accepted; no yard waste, paper products, unapproved compostable bags, or plastics should be placed in the bin.

“This program gives residents a simple, convenient way to be part of a solution,” said Melody Tuschel, Monroe County recycling coordinator. “Every pound of food waste diverted is one less pound ending up in the landfill.”

Residents can register at yoursoilmate.com/pages/monroe. After attending a brief education session, an access code is provided for the dropoff sites.

DISTRICT HIGHLIGHTS DEFENSE AGAINST CYBERATTACKS

Navy recognizes schools for helping military families

Marlene Kolodziej, the district’s director of information technology, provided an extensive presentation on the cybersecurity infrastructure of the school system at a Feb. 10 Monroe County school board meeting in Key West.

Florida Keys schools suffered a disabling ransomware attack in 2018.

The school district takes a multilayer approach to cybersecurity, with software in each user’s device and a hardware examining and sorting at the system level.

“Human error is the number one cause of data breaches,” Kolodziej said. “Email is the most common point for entry attack in the education sector.

She listed nine types of cyber attacks and the systems in place to thwart them. The district’s security system reported more than 17,000 events that could be classified as attacks in the last month. The average is 570 per day. The most common was “graymail,” emails that include marketing, advertising or promotional materials. There were 2,611 phishing attacks – which try tricking a victim into giving away online credentials. The system stopped 116 scams asking for fees or payments. Four attacks were sophisticated social engineering events aimed at making the recipient take actions to change banking, credit card or other actions to benefit the sender. More than 1,600 spam emails were intercepted.

Kolodziej said software in district-supplied personal devices such as the students’ Chromebooks can detect and report bullying and other inappropriate online content.

She said the IT department is the same size it was in 2021 and is currently running 62 projects deploying or replacing technology.

Board member Mindy Conn asked about reliance on the internet for telephone connectivity. Kolodziej replied that backup connectivity, including StarLink satellite terminals, is in place and more is being added.

The fiscal 2025-26 IT program includes $5.3 million in capital funds and $2.7 million in operational funds. The district uses the federal government’s E-Rate program. Administered by the FCC, E-Rate helps to ensure that K-12 schools and public libraries can obtain affordable access to telecommunications services, including broadband internet service and equipment. E-Rate doesn’t use federal money, but it arranges for substantial discounts, as much as 90%, from equipment and services providers.

Board member Darren Horan asked Kolodziej to look into a bill in Tallahassee labeled the Local Government Cybersecurity Program. Board member Sue Woltanski asked if the district rents space to cell towers on any school buildings. The district does get paid for cell antennas at Key West High School.

As part of a discussion with lobbyist Kate DeLoach, the board discussed the state’s Family Empowerment scholarship program. Also known as the school voucher program, it provides families with additional educational choices, primarily to attend participating private schools, but also homeschooling, therapies and online programs. The money comes from the state and is funneled through local districts.

If the demand outstrips the funding, the districts make up the difference. Woltanski stated the district is about $900,000 behind in state fund-

ing. The board discussed proposals to put the empowerment program through a separate funding channel. Also at the meeting, Capt. Colin Thompson, commander of NAS Key West, presented Purple Star School of Distinction awards to Sigsbee Charter School and the College of the Florida Keys Academy. The award recognizes schools that support the needs of military families, help militaryconnected students navigate critical challenges and provide resources for them entering a new school environment.

Thompson praised the environments in these schools for incoming students of military families. Horace O’Bryant School, Key West High School and Sugarloaf School also hold the award.

The school board presented four Great Educational Moments (GEM) awards. Social worker Monet Ray was recognized for the compassionate student-center support she provides and for being a role model for other social workers throughout the district. The Key West High School cheerleading squad, with coaches Kaitlyn Varela and Madison Garcia, was recognized for earning the title of regional champions.

Gary Hernandez, band director at Key West High School, was honored for his work throughout the district. And the Key West High School Marching Band was recognized for its success during an international festival in Rome.

Matt Turk is the current club president who takes the organizational skills he practices at CBT Construction and applies them to this intense production. He worries about the budget, the supplies, the flow and applies the motivational skills of a U.S. Marine to the process. During the event, Turk will be everywhere making things happen.

Not a single person on the face of the Earth is more essential to the event’s success than Anna Richards. Using sophisticated technology, she plots the entire park for vendors, food trucks, restrooms and drink stations.

Melina Miller is the marketing director for the club and the Gigantic Nautical Market. She tells the story of the $4 million contributed by the club to the Keys community in the last 20 years. A Coral Shores graduate, Miller is a professional digital marketing strategist with a master’s degree from FIU and a thriving business. Balancing website content, social media posts, video production, and newspaper ads, she contributes her skills in the Rotary spirit of community service.

Claire Johnson is the event chair who wrangles the troops for a production unlike any other in the Keys. Johnson spends endless hours ensuring every facet of the Gigantic Nautical Market brings an experience that makes many attendees return year after year.

One of the bigger tasks for the Gigantic Nautical Market is wrangling and organizing the hundreds of vendors on park grounds. Enter Maria Jones. It’s one of the more demanding responsibilities, which the president-elect has mastered since taking the role in 2022. “There will be cool items for everyone to buy,” she said. “Be prepared to spend some money and donate to support students.”

MEET THE GIGANTIC NAUTICAL MARKET ORGANIZERS

These Rotarians work tirelessly behind the scenes

JIM McCARTHY jim@keysweekly.com

The 31st Gigantic Nautical Market, one of the biggest events in the Florida Keys, takes place Saturday, Feb. 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Founders Park, MM 87, bayside, Islamorada. Parking is available at Coral Shores High School, MM 89.9, oceanside, with shuttles continuously running to the market. The event features hundreds of vendors, as well as food trucks and drink stations, throughout the park. Upper Keys Rotary uses proceeds from the event to fund scholarships for local high school graduates, as well as those continuing their studies at college or technical school.

A production as big as the Gigantic Nautical Market takes a team of skilled, seasoned and smart individuals. These Upper Keys Rotarians are the key players behind the operation. Every year, hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors come to Founders Park in Islamorada for two days of shopping, food and fun.

Considered the Gigantic Nautical Market wizard, Chris Trentine performs some of the greatest feats — all behind the scenes with little fanfare. A former club president, Trentine does just about everything, from supplying additional hands for setup to lending his companies’ resources to the event.

The sponsor czar for the event is Karly Venezia. She’s a savvy businesswoman who juggles her nonprofit work with her husband’s business and their two young boys. “Our sponsors have made this Rotary event one of the largest fundraisers in the entire county,” she said. “Please take a moment and thank them at the event.”

A variety of food trucks throughout Founders Park are made possible thanks to the organizational efforts of Mary Beth Harris. Taking on the monumental task a few years ago, Harris has elevated the food experience with more than 20 trucks offering all sorts of fare. Come hungry and come both days so you don’t miss a thing.

Frank Derfler, a member of the Upper Keys Rotary since 2009, is the volunteer wrangler. He manages the scholarship students now in higher education who come back to tell their stories to the show attendees. He herds the hundred-plus Coral Shores High School students who help all around the park. And he motivates the Upper Keys Rotary volunteers who join with Rotarians from two other clubs to produce this event. He starts recruiting in January and follows through as part of the scholarship committee with awards in May.

Terry Abel is considered the Swiss Army knife. Whatever is needed at any given time, “El Jefe” is there in a split-second. You won’t find him on a ladder though.

OH BABY, CAN YOU DONATE DIAPERS TO HELP KEYS FAMILIES?

Healthy Start has Keyswide dropoff spots & easy online donations

The organization that exists to help Keys moms and families before, during and after pregnancy has launched its annual diaper drive that will run through Feb. 28 to help provide struggling families with an essential baby item.

Diapers are considered a significant, recurring expense that costs families an average of $80 to $100 per month. And prices have increased by over 20% since 2018, with newborns requiring up to 10 to 12 changes daily, according to the Institute for Research on Poverty.

For many families, this expense can be overwhelming, resulting in a need for diapers that affects one of every three families locally and nationwide, states a press release from the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition.

Families without adequate diapers may be forced to change them less often, increasing the risk of diaper rash and infection. In addition, many child care centers require families to supply diapers, meaning a lack of diapers can prevent parents from working.

“When families don’t have enough diapers, it affects a baby’s health and a parent’s ability to work (as parents must provide day care centers with diapers for their children),” said Arianna Nesbitt of the coalition. “This drive helps ensure babies are healthy and parents have the support they need.”

Donors can purchase diapers and wipes directly from the coalition’s Amazon wish list. Monetary donations are also welcome through the fundraising platform Zeffy, with every dollar going toward diapers and other essential baby supplies. In addition,

local businesses and organizations throughout Monroe County are hosting donation boxes where unopened packages of diapers can be dropped off. A list of the dropoff locations is on this page.

“Through this compassionate effort, we can make sure no family has to choose between buying diapers and covering other basic needs — because every baby deserves a healthy, happy start,” Nesbitt said.

Serving the Key Largo community since 2004, Ministerio Unidos En Amor is more than a church — it is a family rooted in faith, hope, and service. What began as a mission to serve the Spanish-speaking community became an established local church in 2016, led by Pastor Nelson Gonzalez and Pastor Aura Diaz, who answered the call to ministry at a young age and have dedicated their lives to helping others.

Together with their five children — Nelson, Esther, Alyssa, Abisai and Judah — the Gonzalez family embraces the missionary life, sharing compassion and support with those in need. Their ministry focuses on restoring lives through faith-based counseling, helping individuals overcome drug addiction, strengthening marriages, reuniting families and o ering hope to those facing di cult circumstances.

Ministerio Unidos En Amor welcomes the entire community with Spanish services translated into English so everyone feels included. They also give back in meaningful ways, including Friday night bread distribution and Good Neighbor Day events held several times a year that provide fresh produce, meat and household items to local families. As they o en say, “More than a job, it’s a passion to serve.”

Church services take place Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 2:30 PM. Youth meetings are held Mondays at 7:00 PM, monthly Bible study is o ered on Thursdays, and Saturday prayer is at 10:00 PM.

Club’s 45th tour showcases four unique properties

Some of the Upper Keys’ more distinct private gardens will be on display during the 45th Garden Walk on Saturday, Feb. 28.

Organized by the Garden Club of the Upper Keys, this year’s tour will take landscaping enthusiasts, locals and visitors through a bayfront property where native forest meets shimmering bay. Next, a Plantation Key residence features a towering, majestic banyan tree and red mangrove grown from a sprout, among other tropical plantings.

Farther up U.S. 1, a campus known for fish surveys and research will show off its native plants and heritage trail. Finally, a compact property showcases its sustainability and creativity.

“Each site offers its own interpretation of beauty, resilience and connection to the natural world,” says the Garden Club of the Upper Keys. “Together, they exemplify the Garden Club’s commitment to feature a diverse range of garden spaces — rustic and native, polished and curated, playful and deeply personal.”

In addition to the private garden tours, the Garden Walk will include an art show courtesy of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles, shopping and a stroll through the lush landscaping at the Francis Tracy Garden Center in Tavernier. The activities at the center run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, while the private tour gardens will go from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information is at gardenclubupperkeys.org or the

Garden Club of the Upper Keys on Facebook. Tickets are $32 in advance or $35 on the day of the event.

Here is a look at each stop on the walk:

Serenity Cay

Owners Steve and Christina Pearse turned the 3.5-acre property on the Islamorada bayside into a tranquil oasis with some Bali inspiration. Visitors can expect to view an artful blend of native and exotic plants, whimsical sculptures and carvings, a rustic firepit and an expansive view of Florida Bay. Also, be ready to seek out two hidden Ganeshas, a Hindu god known as the obstacle remover and astrology deity. As Christina said, each offers moments of reflection and overcoming hurdles in life.

“This is more than a garden — it’s a haven where every creature, from the hidden Ganesha to the visiting hawks, our resident owls or nocturnal raccoons, all play a part in the joyful ongoing dance toward peace,” she said.

Visitors to the private garden should also be aware of distinctive, dark and sometimes oozing bark with telltale black splotches. The native poisonwood trees are best viewed from afar, Christina says.

‘Banyon’ Breeze

A charming conch-style home features quite a mix of plantings, including striking staghorn, frangipani, desert rose and palms. Then there’s the conversational piece –the massive banyan tree for which

the property is named. With sweeping branches adorned with orchids and ferns, it’s a sight to behold.

Owner Lourdes Berg said she first experienced the annual garden walk last year as she toured the magnificent landscapes. This year, she said she wanted her property to be featured.

There’s also the red mangrove that Berg has grown from a sprout.

“I had it in a bud vase, and then I had to put it in a vase and pot and do this with it,” Berg said of the red mangrove now planted in the ground.

There are cozy sitting areas to admire the flora and fauna. Berg will also have her little workshop open for visitors to see her artsy seashell creations.

REEF Native Plants & Heritage Trail

A peaceful blend of native habitat and historic charm is situated between the oldest structure built in the Upper Keys – now REEF’s administrative office – and the new, state-of-the-art Ocean Exploration Center in Key Largo.

Nearly every plant on the property at 98380 Overseas Highway is native, creating lush gardens that mirror the Keys’ beauty.

“We have some garden club members that are very active in protecting the native plants,” said Jill Kuehnert, REEF’s campus director.

Chelsey Davis, REEF’s director of learning and engagement, said the garden contains tall trees like gumbo limbos.

“It’s shaded and inviting for people to come through and walk through, especially on those really hot days, because we get a lot of bike path traffic,” Davis said.

There are two buccaneer palms belonging to REEF co-founder Paul

Humann at the front of the administrative building. The property also contains a historic cistern.

Interpretive signs highlight the plant and wildlife communities in the Keys. A small pond and butterfly garden evoke a miniature ecosystem, complete with red mangroves and mosquito fish. REEF’s property allows garden walk participants to explore the marine world at the new Ocean Exploration Center.

Beautiful Truth Garden & Apiary

This biodiverse garden inspires commitment and ecological stewardship to the environment. The Key Largo property features more than 100 plants for edible, medicinal or pollinator use, an aquaponic system, a 5,000-gallon cistern and a composting operation including vermiculture.

Motivated by supply shortages from the pandemic, Jacquelyn Bello and Breaz Vera transformed their yard into a self-sufficient “food forest” to ensure their produce is free from pesticides and chemicals. They’ve long composted their own food and yard waste, but had plans for additional raised beds to expand the operation. In 80 weeks, they have composted roughly 14,000 pounds with help from their neighbors.

“Eleven people in our neighborhood compost with us,” Bello said. “People come on their own and they can do a clean bucket swap and leave the dirty bucket.”

The scraps are brought back to the property’s two compost bays.

The property features chickens, a beehive, fruit trees and an array of vegetable and herb plants. Rain barrels and the large cistern help reduce municipal water use.

Lourdes Berg’s ‘Banyon Breeze’ property features a towering, majestic banyan tree.
Look up when strolling through REEF campus’ garden and you might see some fish.

SQUARE GROUPER REELS IN BARTENDERS SAILFISH WIN

The 45th annual Islamorada Bartenders Sailfish Open began on a chilly evening with food and drinks at the Lorelei Restaurant and Cabana Bar. A total of 75 anglers, either bartenders or restaurant employees and representing 15 different bars, braved windy cold conditions to release 24 sailfish on Feb. 2.

Lines were in the water at 8:30 a.m. The first hookup was called in by fish captain Benny Spaulding on the Playbaby, fishing with Dixie Matthews and the crew from Ocean View Inn and Sports Pub. While Matthews was fighting her fish, both the Islander and Snappers teams had releases. Matthews released the first sailfish she had ever caught at 9:19, putting the team in third place.

By noon, the temperatures were in the low 50s while the wind kept blowing. Joining in with releases were Florida Keys Brewing Co., Dive Bar on the Bay, Sunset Lounge and Whistle Stop. Although the bite slowed in the afternoon, Islamorada Wine Company, the Florida Boy and Lorelei had released sailfish.

When the committee boat called lines out of the water, the Vice Versa was victorious with five releases. Megan Simpson, Matthew Sisko, Sarah Bell, Katie Scheu, Bruce Reese, Emily Albury, Frank Suzao and Arie Valentine brought home the perpetual trophy to Square Grouper, and a check for $1,500. Outstanding Captain Award went to Sam Milazzo and Outstanding Mate Awards were presented to Tyler Rodriguez and Justin Matson.

Megan Simpson was the top angler with two fish on time, releasing her two before anyone else. Her name will be added to the JayAnna Cohan founder’s award. She received a Lisa Lee gyotaku print and $500. Second place went to Robbie’s Hungry Tarpon. Barbara Steller, Donald Reilford, James Davis and Nick Berrios fished aboard the Crisdel with captain George Steller. The team released three fish, winning $1,000 and the second-place bar trophy. Steller received the second-place angler award with her two releases.

Matthews and her OV teammates, Colleen Glancy, Alex McKasca, Trevor Ayd, Bobby Rossi and JJ Breheny, took third place with two releases on time. Third Place Angler award went to Bruce Reese from Square Grouper and Fourth Place Angler was won by Kelly Harper aboard the Spartan for the Islander Resort.

The hard luck story award, which was a box full of booze from the Green Turtle, was split: William Howe from the Lorelei waited all day and, with two minutes left in the tournament, hooked and released his first sailfish. Thinking it was the greatest day ever, things changed quickly as he was thrown in the 50-degree water as soon as they reached the dock. Meanwhile, Nick Berrios from the Hungry Tarpon could not keep a sailfish hooked for more than a second.

“My favorite part of this tournament is that we have so many anglers who catch and release their first sailfish,” said tournament director Dianne Harbaugh. “The reason JayAnna Cohan started this tournament was because she loved to sailfish, and she wanted others to have the same opportunity.

Reef is a red fox that was saved from a fur farm. He now lives in Key Largo with his human, Nicole Navarro.

i friends! Reef the fox here with your weekly “Reef’s Report.” Today, my children’s book officially launches on Amazon. The moment has arrived. The book, “Reef the Fox Finds His Purpose,” is a story about resilience, kindness and discovering that sometimes our greatest purpose is simply being there for someone who needs us most.

Now, before the comments start rolling in, did I write it? No. Not this time, my friends. Shocking, I know.

While I am a journalist, an awardwinning local celebrity and a fox of many talents, this particular story was written by my mother and founder of Pawsitive Beginnings, Nicole Navarro. She tells a very honest tale of how I had a really crappy start on a fur farm, and how I somehow ended up here in the Florida Keys surrounded by love, safety, snacks and all of you.

didn’t just give me sunshine and sea breezes. They gave me purpose. The very talented Cameo Anderson is the genius behind the illustrations, and I think she captured me from infant to adult magnificently.

And here’s the part that really matters.

While I may look like just a handsome fox, my purpose became crystal clear when I started making friends in the most unlikely of places – with kids who needed me just as much as I needed them. Kids who saw themselves in my story. Kids who learned that trauma doesn’t get the final word. Kids who realized that healing can look like sitting quietly with a fox who understands what it means to start over.

You can purchase a copy on Amazon or give one to a child (or grownup) who could use a reminder that their story isn’t finished yet. And in case you’re wondering, yes, every single royalty from this book goes directly into the fox bank account, funding food, medical care and sanctuary life for me and my equally charming roommates.

I may not have typed the words, but make no mistake, this book is my heart on paper.

SHOULD IT STAY OR GO?

Understanding food package dates

Saving money on groceries can start with understanding food packaging dates. Have you ever stood in your kitchen holding a carton of milk or a box of cereal, squinting at the date and wondering, “Is this still okay to eat?”

is the University of Florida, IFAS Monroe County Extension Director and Community Development Agent.

If so, you’re not alone. Confusing food package dates cause many households to toss perfectly good food every week — and that adds up to real money in the trash. Once you understand what those dates actually mean, you can shop smarter, stretch your grocery budget and cut down on food waste without risking food safety.

First, an important fact: Except for infant formula, food package dating is not federally regulated. That means manufacturers set those dates, and they’re often about quality, not safety.

What do those dates really mean?

Sell By: This date is for the store, not your kitchen. It tells retailers how long to display a product for sale. If stored properly, many foods are still safe to eat days or even weeks after the sell-by date.

Best if used by / best before: This is a quality guideline, not a safety warning. It’s the manufacturer’s estimate of when the product tastes or performs best. Foods like cereal, pasta, canned goods and snacks are fine well beyond this date.

Use by: This date indicates peak quality as determined by the manufacturer. While it sounds strict, it is not a safety cutoff — again, with the important exception of infant formula.

Expiration date: This is the closest thing to a true safety deadline. If a product clearly states “expires on,” it’s best not to consume it after that date.

CONTRIBUTED

Here are some suggestions to help save money:

Buy discounted items: Stores often mark down food that’s close to its sell-by or best-by date. If you plan to use it soon — or freeze it — you can score real savings.

Use your senses: Dates don’t tell the whole story. If a food looks fine, smells normal and tastes okay (when it’s safe to sample), it’s often still good.

Let your freezer work for you: Freezing meat, bread, shredded cheese and even milk before the date on the package can extend their life for months.

Practice FIFO: first in, first out: Move older items to the front of your fridge and pantry, so they’re used first. This simple habit prevents forgotten food from going to waste.

Know which foods last longer: Dry pasta, rice and canned goods can last for years when stored properly. A “best by” date doesn’t mean it’s time to toss them.

According to the USDA, Americans waste 30% to 40% of the food supply each year, much of it due to confusion over date labels. That’s lost money for households and unnecessary strain on the food system. By understanding food packaging dates, you’re not just avoiding waste. You’re making your grocery dollars go further and taking a simple step toward smarter, more sustainable living.

ROBERT HADLEY LUSE

Sept. 3, 1939 - Feb. 7, 2026

Robert (Bob) Hadley Luse, age 86, of Queen Creek, Arizona departed this earthly life on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026 at home, surrounded by love from his wife and daughter.

days, boating on Lake Norman and in the Keys, playing numerous card table games from bridge to Five Crowns to Mexican Train, dressing up in costumes for parties with Carol and his friends like the infamous annual Fantasy Fest in Key West, spending time with family and friends, and traveling.

He was born Sept. 3, 1939 to the late Harris Leonard Luse and Alice Irene Hadley Luse. He was the youngest child of four children – 17 years younger than his brother, Had, who served in World War II. Bob grew up in Oil City, Pennsylvania and loved spending time with his grandpa Alfred Kinney, who lived with his family. He spent several summers working at the C Lazy U Dude Ranch in Granby, Colorado. He became a ranch hand and learned to repair fences in the winter. He also learned to ski on very long “olden day” skis. He often spoke fondly of his dude ranch days.

After graduating from high school, Bob attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), but quickly learned that he needed some real-world experience before he would be ready to finish his degree, so he joined the Air Force. He served for seven years and was a veteran of the Vietnam war. Bob was very proud to have had the honor to serve his country and was actively involved in annual veteran celebrations within his community.

While Bob was in the Air Force he married the love of his life, Carol Ann Luse (Peterson) on Aug. 1, 1964, whom he met on a blind date. They were married for 61 years and they did everything together. After his active duty, Bob once again attended RPI and this time he was ready. He finished his undergraduate degree and received a master’s degree in business under the GI Bill.

He had a wonderful career in health care administration as a consultant in Sydney, Australia where his daughter Jennifer was born, and working as an executive vice president and then CEO in hospitals in New Haven, Connecticut; Albany, New York; Jacksonville, Florida; Valdese, North Carolina; and last but not least, Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, Florida, where he retired.

Along the way, Bob and Carol made many friends and treated each move as a new adventure that they would embark upon together. When Bob was not working, he enjoyed listening to music and attending outdoor concerts, photography, playing tennis in his younger

He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and even bought an RV when he retired, so that he and Carol could spend more time with their four grandkids. They spent summers exploring state parks, attending RV rallies, visiting with longtime friends and family and seeing their grandkids in Portland, Oregon and San Francisco. After 14 years RVing, Bob and Carol found their newfound travel passion of cruising to exotic locations such as the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, and numerous countries in Europe and Asia. Bob was also a voracious reader and soaked up all of the history he could during his seven years in Bible study. Bob was also a faithful member of the Gold Canyon Methodist Church.

In more recent years, Bob thoroughly enjoyed his weekly breakfasts with “the guys” and his early morning coffee outside on his back porch or his favorite spot at the club enjoying the beautiful views of the mountains with Carol. He has always had a sweet tooth and loved all of the delicious treats that his wonderful community of friends brought him daily, which brightened his days during treatment. Bob never gave up hope and fought to have as much time as he could with his family and friends.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Carol; his daughter Jennifer Luse Heerdink, her husband John Heerdink, and their kids Hadley Rose Heerdink and Krider Adler Heerdink of San Francisco; his son, Jason Robert Luse, his wife Carrie Luse, and their kids Annie Luse and Edie Luse of Portland. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harris Hadley Luse; and sisters, Barbara Ann Luse and Eleanor Luse.

A celebration of life will take place on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026 at 4 p.m. at the Encanterra Club (La Cocina Room). 36460 N Encanterra Dr., Queen Creek, Arizona 85140.

The family would like to extend a thank-you to their extended family, their amazing community of friends, and the wonderful caring staff at Hospice. Bob’s loving and caring presence will be missed by all who knew him, especially his family.

Florida Keys FISH REPORT

DODGING A FROZEN BULLET

Well, we dodged a bullet with the cold front this year. Conditions were close to the freeze of 2010, which heavily affected the snook and bonefish populations.

With water temperatures warming each day, the fishing is getting better and better. Cool mornings targeting tailing redfish in Flamingo with flamingos in the backdrop has been a highlight for many backcountry enthusiasts. It’s an amazing sight to see these birds calling Florida Bay home again.

Oceanside, flats fishing has been productive on the incoming tides bringing in warmer water. We’re seeing more permit than I would have thought after the cold front. More and more bone-

fish are coming back to the flats daily in large schools. Handling these fish with care is important as they are still recovering from the cold.

Tarpon season is just around the corner. We’re noticing more activity and size among the juveniles, especially the last few days. We’re expecting to start seeing these silver kings migrating into town soon. We had an amazing March last year, and we’re looking forward to warmer temperatures and happy fish.

FISH FACT

Per FWC, redfish harvest is open year-round. The slot limit is no less than 18 inches and no more than 27 inches in length. The daily bag limit is one fish per person, per day; two fish per vessel limit.

FISH TIP

Floating a live shrimp under a popping cork is a good way to fish for redfish. They also chase crabs, mullet, pinfish and killifish (mud minnows).

SERVING COLD, LOCAL BREWS FOR 11 YEARS AND COUNTING

Florida Keys Brewing Co. throws a party for anniversary

Florida Keys Brewing Co. rang in 11 years of local beer production — and enjoyment among the many locals and visitors — with an anniversary celebration on Feb. 15. In addition to the beer pours, delicious fare and live music came other amusing activities, like the lizard race. Proceeds from the race benefited the Upper Keys Humane Society. Brewery co-owner Cheryl McBay said the day saw quite the turnout. “The vibe was amazing, everyone was having a great time and everyone was really happy,” she said.

Located in the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District, Florida Keys Brewing Co. is owned by Cheryl and Craig McBay. It offers a selection of beers, as well as rotating seasonal and barrel-aged drinks, on draft. The brewery also hosts music festivals, bingo, other game nights and a variety of special events throughout the year.

Shores senior Vanessa Gabriel has been accumulating quite the medal collection in weightlifting this winter. Gabriel won dual district golds last month, added a pair of regional golds two weeks ago, and on Feb. 13, she picked up two state gold medals from the FHSAA 1A Championships in Lakeland. With leadership, coachability and attention to detail all being part of her character, it is no wonder that she has accomplished so much. Her coach used a Bible verse to sum up Gabriel’s heart. “Her work ethic reflects Philippians 4:13, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,’ as she continually pushes herself to grow stronger,” said Erin Hamilton. For her unrelenting work ethic and amazing accomplishments at the highest level of competition, Coral Shores’ Vanessa Gabriel is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

Coral Shores’

Gabriel notches double lifting gold as all Keys strongwomen return from states with medals

On Feb. 13, Keys lifters made a statement in Lakeland at the FHSAA 1A State Championships in girls weightlifting. The island chain qualified four athletes for the big show and every single one returned a state medalist. Out of over 120 teams competing, both Keys teams cracked the top 10. Marathon finished in the traditional competition in a multiteam tie for seventh and Coral Shores finished 10th. In Olympic lifts, which rely more on the perfection of form than traditional, the Dolphins and Hurricanes tied for eighth, a testament to the sound fundamentals coached by Marathon’s Jessie Schubert and Coral Shores’ Erin Hamilton.

Coral Shores had just one qualifier, but senior Vanessa Gabriel made the most of it. Competing in the Unlimited category, Gabriel struck gold twice, earning the top place in both the traditional and Olympic competitions. To earn dual gold medals, Gabriel combined three impressive lifts. She began with a 135-pound snatch, which put her in a tie for second as the athletes entered into lift number two, the clean and jerk. The clean lift is the most important of the three, as it is used in calculating the winner of both competitions. Gabriel PRed with a 200-pound lift, the best of the field, to place her on the top spot of the podium with a combined total of 335 pounds – besting the second-place finisher by five pounds in the Olympic event.

disadvantage heading into the traditional event.

With a 30-pound deficit to overcome, Lee Isom left it all on the line for her final lift as a Lady Fin. She easily cleared 175 on the bench press, then scratched at 185. Instead of retrying 185, the steadfast senior added five pounds to her bar and was good for a 190-pound PR bench press and a second silver medal.

Next, Gabriel would pull off another PR on the bench, lifting 185 pounds to tie for the lead with a combined total of 385 pounds in the traditional event. To determine the winner of a tie in weightlifting events, the lighter athlete is given the advantage, and Gabriel’s lower bodyweight put her atop the podium in the traditional event, too. Within the span of a few hours, Gabriel became a two-time state champion.

Marathon qualified a trio of lifters this season, including three-time state champ Justice Lee Isom. Lee Isom started off with a PR-matching 175-pound snatch lift to tie for first. She then added a 205-pound clean and jerk for 380 combined pounds in the Olympic competition. That total, while fourth best in any weight class, was not the top total in her 183-pound division, giving Lee Isom a silver medal in the Olympic category and a

Junior Adelle Bainbridge made waves in her first year on the weightlifting team at Marathon, and a state berth would have been a perfect end to her debut season. But Bainbridge, who competes at 154, is not one to be satisfied with anything but her best. The first-time qualifier made the top 10 in both events and earned a fifth-place medal in the Olympic competition by combining a 125-pound snatch lift with a 165-pound clean and jerk. Bainbridge’s 130-pound PR bench press helped boost her to ninth place in the traditional event.

Senior Ella Evans is not new to the state competition, and her 155-pound bench press is particularly impressive given that she competes in the 119-pound class. Evans added a 145-pound clean and jerk for 300 total pounds in the traditional event, where she won bronze. Evans’ total was just shy of a state title in a competition in which first and third were separated by a mere five pounds.

FIRST DRAW

Prep lacrosse season opens with wins for all Keys teams

Feb. 9 marked the first day for official games for Florida prep lacrosse, and Keys teams launched immediately into the win column.

Coral Shores’ boys started with a three-game road series. They picked up their first win of the season with a 16-2 thrashing of Westminster Academy on opening day, then fell 16-4 to

Ransom two days later. On Feb. 3, the Hurricanes found their winning ways again, defeating Palmetto 16-2.

The 2-1 ’Canes will enjoy a home-field advantage with six straight games in the Upper Keys and will not take another trip until March 10.

The Hurricane roster boasts 28 athletes with plenty of returning talent in their senior-laden lineup.

Key West’s boys started

with a win in a 16-5 victory at Palmetto High Feb. 12. The Conchs roster, though relatively young, is 26 strong. Both Keys girls teams played one game last week, and like the gentlemen, both started in the win column.

On Feb. 11, the Lady ’Canes opened their season at home, playing district opponent St. Brendan School. Coral Shores won 14-6, with Shay Stober and Addy McNew netting three goals apiece. Ivy Tiedemann and Alexis Mahaffey each added two to the team total. Zeffie

Crockett, Saylor Wampler, Anaia Woods and Eleanor Perchalski all found the back of the net as well. Eliyana McLeod picked up six ground balls and added disruption to the Sabres’ play with three caused turnovers. Lola Stober held things down in the cage, saving eight shots on goal in her varsity debut.

The Lady Conchs played in the Backyard on Feb. 12, defeating another District 16 opponent, Palmer Trinity, 13-12. Senior captain Turner took charge, scoring five goals, assisting once and winning four draw controls. Turner also caused a pair of turnovers to wreak havoc on the visiting Falcons. Fellow captain Eisley Whitehead netted one goal and two assists while Taylor Gibson scored one and won five draws. Mavis Bishop found the back of the net six times against Palmer, then added five draw controls and a pair of interceptions to her stats as well, while Ashlyn Picco’s interception came in clutch in the back-and-forth game.

The Conchs battle-tested a pair of new goalkeepers against Palmer. Senior Alexandra Konecna registered five saves while Diya Alwani, a sophomore, had two saves, one of which prevented a late-game chance for the Falcons to tie it up. The team caused five turnovers and picked up 19 ground balls in the win.

1. Mavis Bishop (3) and Colbie Turner (2) work together to win the ball.

2. Eisley Whitehead chases down a Palmer defender.

3. Teagan Shea (6), Mavis Bishop (3) and Azilys Frouel go on the attack.

Conchs fall at Stranahan to end otherwise successful season

The Conchs came out fighting Feb. 14, intent to slay the Mighty Dragons of Stranahan in the FHSAA 4A Region 4 quarterfinals. Key West, seeded No. 7, earned a regional berth with their success within a challenging schedule, which gave them a power ranking strong enough to earn a bid to the next set of brackets despite losing in districts.

Key West came out of the gates with fire to match the Dragons, scoring 21 points in the first quarter. But Stranahan, the third-seeded team in the region, earned their ranking justly and outperformed the Conchs the rest of the way to seal the win over Key West. The Dragons increased their lead each quarter, holding the Conchs to just four points in the second and fourth.

James Osborne scored 20 points while Leandro Batista added six and Judson Snider five. The 73-36 loss spelled the end of the season for the Conchs, who finished with a solid 14-12 record and the distinction of being the longest-lasting team in Monroe County this season.

GIRL POWER Wrestlers Holushko, Wolfe advance to regionals

Wrestlers from Key West, Marathon and Coral Shores participated in the FHSAA 1A District 16 Championships on Feb. 12 at Miami Coral Park High School. When the final bout was complete, two Keys athletes had their cards punched to the next round of action, which will take place at the Region 4 tournament on Feb. 21 at South Dade Senior High.

Key West’s Maria Holushko and Marathon’s Autumn Wolfe earned automatic bids to regionals by finishing in the top four places at districts. Holushko was the runner-up in the 140-pound competition while Wolfe placed fourth at 105.

Key West’s Wenxin Yu (115) was fifth while Nalani LaBeet (110) and Emily Nolasco (105) both finished in sixth place in their weight classes. Though they did not advance automatically, there is still a chance for wrestlers finishing fifth and even sixth to win a berth to regionals when other districts do not have four qualifiers in a weight class. Those qualifiers are determined after all four districts in Region 4 have concluded their championships.

Marathon’s Autumn Wolfe holds up her fourth-place district medal, which provides her a sure spot at regionals.

While the girls were at districts, Key West’s boys hosted Coral Shores for their Senior Night. The Conchs put on a strong performance while honoring their seniors, with wins from Jake Ferguson (126), Kyle Condella (138), Michael Guzman (165) and Sandy Horn. Horn won via decision and the rest pinned their opponents. Aristerne Richardson (106), Josiah Gonzales (113), Kascper Kowalik (215) and Gionni Fernandez (285) all picked up wins via forfeit.

Hurricane winners were Sebastian McCoy (120), Gavin Matheis (132), Jeremiah Ortiz (144), Nathaniel Tristram (150), Sterling Keefe (157) and David Beltran (175).

For the gentlemen, the next stop is the FHSAA 1A District 16 Championships. This year’s event will be held in Key West where the Conchs hope to defend the title they have held since 2008. Joining Key West and Coral Shores will be athletes from Marathon’s inaugural wrestling team and the rest of District 16’s Miami teams on Feb. 20.

Most recently, Holly Redding took the time to review my home insurance policy and found ways to adjust my coverage that lowered my premium without sacri cing what I needed. IWINNING WAYS

Keys teams open seasons with victories

t’s baseball season in the Keys, and last week, all three teams started their quests for postseason hardware the right way.

In their home opener Feb. 13, Key West’s Donovan Thiery effectively shut down the ABF Academy (Homestead) offense, striking out 12 of the 13 batters he faced. Thiery was surgical on the mound, tossing just 58 pitches in four innings of work. Christian Koppal and Auggy Davila held down the fort for the rest of the night, and despite being outhit 6-3, the Conchs pulled off a 5-2 win over the Bandits. Kade Maltz doubled, while Thiery and Roman Garcia each added a base hit in the team’s first official win of the season.

The following night, the Conchs faced the other ABF Academy, and the Hialeah version proved a bit more challenging. Key West struck first, stringing together a pair of hits in the first inning to get on the board. The Cowboys answered back with two of their own in the top of the second. The Conchs then added four in the third inning and two in the fourth to pull ahead 7-2. The Cowboys chipped away at that lead, but ran out of innings to exact their comeback.

Key West’s bats were steady, churning out 11 hits with three from Garcia, a pair of doubles from Darreld Tremino and a solo home run off the bat of Davila. Maltz earned the win on the mound, tossing four innings before Cruz Holmes, Beau Bender and Davila chipped in one inning of work apiece to close out the 7-6 win.

Marathon opened the season with a two-game road trip, starting with a Feb. 9 matchup with Miami Country Day. The Dolphins overpowered the Spartans with seven hits over five innings in a resounding 12-0 win.

Eighth-grader Reef Rella started on the mound for the Fins, spanning three innings with five strikeouts and six walks. Roco Piscetello finished out the final two innings. The Dolphins held the Spartans to a single hit defensively while pouring on the runs themselves. Gabriele Cirina drove in five runs with three hits, one of which was a grand slam in the fifth inning. The other two were doubles. Curren Nicolay doubled while Piscetello and Jason Stubblefield each singled. Massimo Quargnali was finicky at the plate, drawing four walks to boost his on-base percentage.

The following evening, the Fins headed to Somerset Silver Palms to take on the Stallions. The Fins matched their opponent run-for-run until the third inning, when Silver Palms pulled ahead. The Dolphins battled back and took the

lead in the fourth, then the Stallions tied it up in the sixth. The ever-patient Fins found a crack in the Stallion defense in the top of the seventh, when Rella hit a solid double followed by a Cirina walk to place runners on first and second.

Up next were Miles Murphy and Bradley Buigas, a pair of eighth-graders whose plate presence is far beyond their age. Buigas was already 3-for-3 on the night and Murphy had one hit and an on-base percentage well above .500. But Silver Palms’ field was without lights, and the umpire called the game right then and there, forcing the Fins to settle for a tie with a team which has become quite a rival in recent seasons.

Cirina started on the mound, striking out six and walking three in two-and-one-third innings. Piscetello and Dylan Williams chipped in for the tie. In addition to Rella, Buigas and Murphy’s hits, Williams singled, Piscetello hit a triple and two singles, Cirina singled and Stubblefield hit a bomb over the left field fence for a solo home run. In all, the Fins racked up 11 hits to the Stallions’ eight.

The Fins exacted their revenge on the Stallions on Feb. 13, when Silver Palms paid a visit for Marathon’s home opener. The game was scoreless until the third inning, when Williams drew a walk with two outs. Piscetello singled, then Jack Chapman and Stubblefield drew walks to score one run.

1. Tyrone Cervantes connects with a pitch Feb. 13 against ABF Homestead.

2. Auggy Davila runs to first after a sacrifice fly against ABF Homestead.

3. Miles Murphy flips the ball to first.

4. Reef Rella slides into third base to beat the throw.

The fourth inning started with a pair of walks; then, a Buigas bunt scored what would be the final run of the game. Williams was effective on the mound, striking out 11, walking three and allowing three hits in six and two-thirds innings. Piscetello faced a single batter, whose flyout ended the game in a 2-0 win for the Dolphins.

Coral Shores opened their season with a win against Terra Environmental Feb. 9 in a 2-1 showdown that highlighted dialed-in pitching from senior Riley O’Berry. He threw six innings, striking out 10 batters with no walks and allowing five hits with just a single run scoring. Glade Harrelson closed out the final inning for the Hurricanes.

O’Berry doubled while Keller Blackburn and Mailon Aguila singled. A stingy Terra pitching staff gave up just three hits and no walks, but Maykol Bonito took two bases the hard way. After being hit by pitches twice, Bonito scored one of the Hurricane runs to help the ’Canes come away with their first win.

The following night, the Hurricanes were swept away by the Buccaneers of South Dade High. The ’Canes were perfect in the field, but the Bucs’ bats overwhelmed the Hurricanes. Keller Blackburn had the lone hit against South Dade in the 15-0 three-inning rout.

BATTLES AT THE BASELINE

Keys courts kept busy with county action

Marathon’s tennis squad paid a visit to Coral Shores on Feb. 10, trading wins with the Hurricanes on the courts of Tavernier.

In boys action, Marathon bested Coral Shores 5-1, with wins coming from Tanner Snowden, Matt Delgado and Graham Murphy in singles, plus another win from Snowden and Delgado in doubles. Coral Shores’ Elijah Craig won in the No. 4 singles spot to get the ’Canes on the scoreboard.

In girls action, the Hurricanes flipped the script and defeated the Dolphins 6-1. Allyson Rosendale,

Kaiyenna De Ron, Harlee Beeler and Jillian Thiery picked up singles wins, then De Ron and Beeler won in No. 1 doubles and Parker Kelly and Emily Rosu picked up the final win for the Hurricanes in the No. 2 doubles match. Marathon’s Emily Alvear was the lone Dolphin winner, earning one point for the Fins in the No. 1 singles match.

Two days later, Key West did the trip north to play Marathon with a limited roster. Both teams were feeling the impact of a recent illness which made its way through the Keys. Key West’s Monea McLeod, Durdona Oblokulova and Shihan Ren won in singles, then Oblokulova and Ren teamed

up for a win in the No. 2 doubles match to defeat the Fins 4-2. Marathon’s Emily Alvear won the No. 1 singles match, then added another win in No.1 doubles with partner Maleeya Abraham.

The boys played just three singles and one doubles match with their limited rosters. Marathon freshman Tanner Snowden won No. 1 singles while Key West’s Mason Martel and Daniel Morales won in the No. 2 and 3 singles spots. Ben Delostrinos teamed up with Martel for a third Conch win in doubles.
