Coral Shores’ Donovan Thiery has been lightning up the court this season with explosive performances and acrobatic dunks. The 6’3” shooting guard scored 18 points against Palmer Trinity last week, stealing the ball three times and pulling down 7 rebounds. Later in the week, he unleashed 22 points against Palm Glades Prep. An honors student who has an AP-heavy schedule, Thiery is performing in the classroom as well, earning a 4.42 weighted GPA. Most exciting of all is the fact that he’s just a sophomore, with many seasons ahead to add to his athletic legacy at Coral Shores. For his incredible performances on the court and in the classroom, Donovan Thiery is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

FINS OUTLIFT ’CANES Ross, Lee lead county in girls weightlifting

C

oral Shores traveled to Marathon on Dec. 6 for an incounty weightlifting meet six weeks from district competition. Marathon’s Mikkel Ross and Justice Lee again lead the pack in the Sinclair algorithm and total lifts, respectively. Ross, who participates in the 129-lb. class, won both the traditional and Olympic events as well as having the highest Sinclair score. The Sinclair score takes into account an athlete’s total lifts and their body weight, determining who, pound-for-pound, had the strongest lifts.

Lee had the highest totals in all three lifts last Wednesday, placing her at the top of the 183-lb. weight class in both the traditional and Olympic events. Lee added five pounds to her total last week on the bench press for a solid 160-lb. lift, which she matched in the clean and jerk. She lifted 135 in the snatch event.

Marathon’s Sierra Earnhardt, who competes in the 119-lb. category, was third using the Sinclair algorithm, winning both events for her class. Also winning double first places for the Fins were Marquisha Abraham at 154 and Sabrina Schofield at 199. Coral Shores had a trio of double winners in Rachel Rusch at 110 pounds, Grace Patterson at 169 and Sydney Eysenbach in the Unlimited class.

Four Fins shared first places at the event. At 101 pounds, Ella Dunn and Ayme Maradiaga split the wins, with Dunn winning the Olympic event and Maridiaga taking first in traditional. Cami Wrinn and Ava Merryman did the same in the 139-lb. competition, with Wrinn winning Olympic and Merryman taking the traditional event.

Marathon and Coral Shores are in the FHSAA’s 1A classification while Key West, with a larger student population, is classified as 2A. The ‘Canes and Fins will participate in a few more local meets prior to their first round of postseason competition which begins on Jan. 27 at Dr. Charter High for their district meet. Key West’s district meet is set for Jan. 25.

WINNING WAYS Coral Shores boys and girls basketball above .500

hile early-season basketball results throughout the Keys have been a mixed bag, the island chain’s northernmost high school is starting on an upward trend.

Coral Shores’ girls improved to 3-1 with a trio of wins last week, beginning on Dec. 4 with a 58-21 victory over Colonial Christian. Up next was Divine Savior on Dec. 7.

Coral Shores dominated the Sharks, winning 47-12. The team then traveled all the way to Orlando for a game against Cornerstone Academy Charter School out of Belle Isle. The three-game win streak ended there with a tight 40-37 loss against the Ducks.

Coral Shores’ boys added a pair of wins to their record last week, beginning with Palmer Trinity on Dec. 4. The 2-1 Hurricanes defeated the Falcons 63-61 in an all-out effort to claim a district win. On Dec. 8, the ’Canes played at home against Palm Glades Prep, winning 74-27. Donovan Thiery led the team in scoring with 22 points. Ayden Lane scored 15, Keegan Fish had 11, AJ Johnson had 8 and AJ Putetti and Jeremiah Burton each put in 6. The Hurricane coaching staff attributed the win, in part, to an aggressive defense that was effective in disrupting Palm Glades’ offensive drives.

The ’Canes have a busy week scheduled, culminating in an appearance at the annual Palmer holiday tournament in Miami, where they will join Marathon and multiple Miami schools for a weekend of games.

The Lady Fins picked up their first win of the season on Dec. 7 at NSU University School. Marti Kilbourne had the high score with 14 points, Elena Eubank scored 11 and Daysi Williams put in 8 for Marathon. Marathon defeated the Sharks 53-49 on their last stop before facing county rival Coral Shores on Dec. 12 (results were not available at press time).

Marathon’s boys picked up another win Dec. 6 against visiting Keys Gate Charter. The Fins outscored the Knights 52-47 in front of an animated crowd. Xavier Grant was the leading scorer in the game with 17 points. Daeshawn Holmes earned another doubledouble with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Adrian Cruz added 11 points and a pair of steals. On Dec. 8, Marathon traveled to Monsignor Pace to face the Spartans, falling 71-34 in a lopsided affair. Holmes and Grant had 7 points each while Yaniel Garcia and Adrian Cruz both had 6.

The Lady Conchs did not have a game last week, but will continue their schedule against Barron Collier on Saturday, Dec. 16 before heading to Coral Shores on Thursday, Dec. 21.

Key West’s boys had three games scheduled for last week, but Miami Killian and Gulf Coast both canceled their trips to the Southernmost City. They were able to play at Goleman on Dec. 5 and picked up a win on the road, defeating the Gators 79-64.

James Osborne had the hot hand, scoring 24 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in a clutch double-double performance. Kameron Roberts had 17 points and 5 rebounds, David Aviles scored 15 and Leandro Batista grabbed 11 rebounds for the Conchs, who are now sitting on an even 2-2 record.

MARATHON BOYS SOCCER LEADS COUNTY WITH 3-1-1 RECORD

W

ith the first few weeks of regular season prep soccer in the books, the Marathon Dolphins hold the Keys’ only winning record as of Dec. 11.

The Fins ended last week with authority, beating Westwood at home in an 8-0 mercy rule win on Dec. 7. Oscar Cardona wasted no time starting the scoring, with his first goal coming in the first 48 seconds of the game. Cardona went on to score four more before the mercy rule took effect. Joshua Gomez, Jayden Rosete and Jay Marshall each scored one goal, with Giordani Prieto and Gabriel Olivas earning assists.

one on Dec. 7 against Westwood Christian School. Rain Banks’ shot, assisted by Jordan MacDonald, was the only one to find the back of the net. The following day, Marathon took to the road to play SLAM Academy, losing 4-1. Banks scored the lone goal in the match, this time unassisted.

The Lady Conchs defeated Coral Shores on Dec. 8 by the same one-goal margin as their previous matchup. Maddie Kilduff, Maria Chaney and Ella Baxter each found the net one time for Key West to secure the 3-2 victory. On Dec. 9, Ransom made the trip to play Key West in The Backyard. The Raiders bested the Conchs 2-0. The 3-3-1 Lady Conchs have two more games before the holiday break, including one at

home against Marathon on Dec. 19. This season marks the first in nearly three years in which all three girls teams played one another, making a true Keys champion possible.

Key West’s boys are hoping to find their first win after a loss against MAST Academy on Dec. 7. The Conchs lost 5-0 on the road against the Sharks in the district matchup. Key West’s schedule gets a bit less challenging midseason with some key matches in the coming weeks, including a visit by neighboring Marathon on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

Coral Shores scored 6 goals in the win. Kai Redruello had a part in all of them, scoring 3 unassisted, then providing the helpers for Sammy Bates, Grace Goodwin and Delaney Donnelly. Goalkeeper Sophie Stevenson registered 4 saves to preserve the shutout for the Hurricanes.

Coral Shores’ boys won against Pace on Dec. 6, making short work of the Spartans in a mercy-rule victory. The following night they fell to Keys Gate 2-0, then lost to St. Brendan 2-1 on Dec. 8. The Hurricanes have two chances to get back into their winning ways with games scheduled against Westminster and Florida Christian before the holiday break.

ey West’s grapplers were in Miami at the Bear Down Duals held at Mater Lakes Academy on Dec. 9. The Conchs finished in second place at the event and had strong showings from Alfredo Corrales, Abram Canet and Dost Bahktiyorov, who went undefeated for the boys team. On the girls team, Sheyla Figueira and Natalie Arguello won their weight classes with undefeated showings, giving Key West a lot of hope to go far again this season. The Conchs will be busy this weekend, hosting and wrestling in their annual Key West Invitational tournament. Action begins Friday, Dec. 15 at 4:30 p.m. in Key West’s Bobby Menendez Gymnasium.

Coral Shores traveled to Fort Myers to participate in the SFCA King’s Classic Wrestling Tournament. The ’Canes fared well in the lower weight classes, with 106-lb. Steven DeRobertis placing fourth in his weight class and Sebastian McCoy placing second in the 113-lb. category. Coral Shores will have a shorter trip this week as they will join the Conchs at the Key West invitational this weekend.
