In Marathon’s Dec. 1 match against cross-county rival Coral Shores, Dolphin goalkeeper Tiago Rivero made it very clear that his team was not to be taken lightly. The tied match could have been a completely different story had Rivero not endured a peppering of 37 shots on goal, allowing just one ball to cross the goal line.

Rivero’s presence on the field is intimidating to teams and inspiring to his own.

“The players and I love and respect him as he proves, time and again, what a keystone player is as our starting goalkeeper,” explained head coach Shannon Wiley.

For his incredible and acrobatic play in goal and supreme sportsmanship, Marathon’s Tiago Rivero is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

EARLY SEASON TRIALS

oral Shores’ girls made the most of their only game last week, defeating Florida Christian on Nov. 30 at home in a resounding 52-17 win. In the opening quarter, it looked to be a close matchup, with the ’Canes up by just 4. Coral Shores hit their groove in quarter two, scoring 23 points and locking down the Patriots on defense, sending them into the locker room at halftime with a 33-13 lead.

The hot-handed Hurricanes did not let up in the second half, resulting in a win for their season opener and some confidence heading into a three-game week. Senior Brooke Mandozzi had a game-high 27 points on her double-double effort, which included 10 steals and four rebounds.

Mandozzi missed just three shots the entire game.

Grace Leffler led the team in assists and had 11 points of her own in what head coach Jarrod Mandozzi called a “well-rounded” performance.

“Our defense was just outstanding,” he said, describing a lockdown that included 32 steals. The ’Canes play a series of non-district games, then face Marathon in Tavernier on Tuesday, Dec. 12 for a district match.

Coral Shores’ boys played one game last week, traveling to LaSalle on Nov. 29. The Royal Lions bested the Hurricanes 52-38. The ’Canes had limited practice time due to some mechanical issues at their gymnasium but should be all systems go for a packed schedule in the coming weeks, including a district game against Marathon on Dec. 12.

Marathon’s boys found themselves in the win column on Dec. 1 after a disappointing 0-2 start to their season. The Fins lost to Palmer Trinity on Nov. 28, then to South Homestead two nights later. They hit their stride on Dec. 1 against Redlands Christian, though, toppling the Falcons 61-23 in front of a big home crowd, while the starting five took most of the second half off.

Senior Xavier Grant had the hot hand, scoring 17 points and adding 4 steals. Adrian Cruz had 14 points and 6 steals, and Yaniel Garcia added 8 points. Daeshawn Holmes scored 6 with 5 rebounds, a pair of steals and 3 blocks. Marathon will focus on a pair of games scheduled for this week but have their hopes set on a district win at Coral Shores on Dec. 12.

Marathon’s girls are still looking for a win this season. The 0-3 Fins played at St. Brendan and South Homestead last week, losing both games on the road. A Dec. 2 game was canceled. Marathon will have two games, one against a struggling Keys Gate and one against University School, prior to their own much-anticipated trip to Tavernier to play the Hurricanes on Dec. 12.

The Lady Conchs got off to a rocky start, losing their first three games of the season. The team will have a chance to recover and regroup this week. The team is not scheduled to play again until Saturday, Dec. 16, when they face Barron Collier at home.

Key West’s boys suffered a pair of losses last week, the first coming from Miami Christian on Dec. 1. Junior Josue Thanus had a game high 17 points, David Aviles scored 14 and Leandro Batista put up 9. James Osborne grabbed a dozen rebounds and Kameron Roberts pulled down 10 rebounds in the 74-52 loss.

The following night, 7A North Port High School visited, beating the Conchs 52-28. Osborne scored 10, Aviles had 8 and Batista put up 6 in the loss. Key West has a chance to even its record on Friday, Dec. 8 when the winless Killian Cougars visit Bobby Menendez Gym.

LADY FINS STRONG AS EVER Keys Lifters Compete at Coral Shores

O

n Nov. 29, Marathon and Key West made the trip to Coral Shores High School for a tri-meet in girls weightlifting. Marathon had the top team scores in both traditional and Olympic lifting. The Lady Fins earned 51 points in traditional style to Coral Shores’ 36 and Key West’s 20. Traditional style lifting was a closer competition, with Marathon scoring 49, Coral Shores 38 and Key West 21.

Marathon’s Mikkel Ross wasted no time transitioning from her fall sport to weightlifting this season. Fresh from a fifth state appearance for the Lady Fins cross country team, Ross had the highest Sinclair coefficient in last week’s trimeet. The Sinclair scoring takes into account a lifter’s total in each event as well as the athlete’s body weight to place athletes on an evenly matched set of circumstances. Ross scored the highest in both Olympic and traditional style lifting. Ross was a state medalist in ’23 and looks good to repeat her stellar performance this January.

Teammate Justice Lee had the highest total in weight lifted at the meet. Lee also made an appearance at states last season as a freshman. Her 155-lb. clean and jerk, 155-lb. bench and 130-lb. snatch lifts put her in prime position to not only make it to the big show this season, but make her a contender for a medal in her weight class.

All 10 weight classes had double winners, taking first place in both styles of lifting. The 101-lb. class was won by Marathon’s Ayme Maradiaga. Also winning dual firsts for Marathon were Sierra Earnhardt in the 119-lb. class, Ross in

the 129-lb. division, Lee in 183-lb. and Sabrina Schofield in 199.

Coral Shores registered wins in the 110-lb. category with double wins from Rachel Rusch, Jennille Arias in 169 and Sydney Eysenbach in the unlimited category.

Key West brought home wins from Shylo Sanchez in the 139-lb. category and Dazmine Jenkins, a ’23 state qualifier, in 154.

The teams have some time to gain strength and add plates to their bars as they hone their form and put in the work. Districts begin at the end of January with the State Championships held in Lakeland on Feb. 16 and 17.

oral Shores’ cross country coach Lyndie Meyers led by example during the Dec. 1 Key Largo Bridge Run. Signing herself up for the 5k race and placing second in her age group, Meyers encouraged her team to put in some work to keep the progress going. Her fellow runners also brought home some hardware, including regional qualifier Kai Guth, who won the 15- to 19-year-old female age group, and Julia Rusch, who came in right behind Guth. Saige Ensign and Hayden Teal took second and third place, respectively, in the 12- to 14-year-old age group, paving the way for the Hurricanes’ continued success next season. he Key West Conchs played on Nov. 29, hitting the road to take on the 5A Wolverines of Belen Jesuit High. Belen took an early lead in the first half and Key West fired back shortly after, capitalizing on a corner kick. Albie Bowden was the one to find the net, using his head, with Sebastian Carmargo credited with the assist. Belen retook the lead just before halftime.

Key West came out shooting in the second half, pressuring the Belen keeper with multiple shots that did not manage to make it across the goal line. Belen scored a third goal from a throw-in, stretching their lead. Owen Lindley then scored his first high school goal with an impressive bicycle kick from a corner, assisted by Carmargo. The re-energized Conchs then looked to even it up, but Belen would be the team to score last, handing Key West a loss in the record book but likely boosting their power ranking against the higherranked, larger Wolverines.

On Dec. 2, the even larger 7A Bobcats of North Port High School made the trip from Sarasota to play the southernmost school. The Bobcats won the match, but Loubins Fleuridor, assisted by Kieran Smith, denied them a shutout with a Conch goal in the 3-1 loss.

The Lady Conchs had one win and one loss last week.

They started the week off strong, defeating Somerset Academy Silver Palms in an 8-0 mercy-rule victory. Jazzy Dieguez earned a hat trick in the resounding win. Ella Baxter added 2 goals and Grace Andrew, Colbie Turner and Maddie Kilduff found the net one time each. Goalkeeper Teagan Lavin was credited with the shutout. On Dec. 2, they took on the much larger North Port High School, playing to a 5-1 loss at home.

Grace Andrew scored the lone goal for the Conchs. The Conchs’ next opponent is Coral Shores, which travels to Key West on Friday, Dec. 8 for a non-district contest. The Conchs won their first meeting 2-1 on Nov. 8 and look to even up their record, which currently stands at 2-3-1.

Marathon’s girls got off to a late start in gameplay this season and, due to a cancellation by International Studies on Dec. 1, played just one match last week. The Lady Fins hosted Coral Shores for a district matchup that began in Cinderella fashion for Marathon. First-year head coach Cathy Gwilliam, formerly on Coral Shores’ coaching staff, faced the familiar foe head-on and her Lady Fins played a half of stellar soccer, culminating in a Sara Strama goal putting the underdog Fins up 1-0. Marathon’s defense held strong, but Coral Shores’ 19 shots on goal were too much for the young team to overcome.

Once Coral Shores found the net, the floodgates opened for the Hurricanes. By the final whistle, Kai Redruello had earned herself a hat trick. Sofia Jans and Izzy Malloggi each scored a goal and Ali Beth Wilson assisted two in a game that ended far differently than it began. The 5-1 win for Coral Shores was secured by Sophie Stevenson and Haylee Castrorao, who combined in goal with five saves. Coral Shores’ victory gave them a win in District 16 3A action, which they saw more of on Dec. 1 when they played Keys Gate at home.

The Hurricanes lost that match 1-0. They will not see another district game until Jan. 12 when they play Marathon at home, placing district bracketing outcomes into the temperamental realm of power rankings. Both Marathon and Coral Shores will have the opportunity to increase their rankings with some larger and challenging teams on their schedules this season.

Marathon’s boys had a big road win on Nov. 27, beating the Crusaders of Dade Christian 5-0. Giordani Prieto and Jayden Rosete had a pair of goals apiece and Oscar Cardona scored 1 in the Fins’ shutout victory. The following night, Car-

dona had 2 and Prieto scored another goal in a game which came down to the final moments. Marathon came up short in the 4-3 loss against Westland Hialeah. The Dolphins took the home opener loss to heart and regrouped for a district contest against neighboring rival Coral Shores on Dec. 1.

In Coral Shores’ only match last week, the Hurricanes stormed Marathon’s field and started the game strong with a first-half goal from Tony Khioni. Khioni, just a freshman, managed to outmaneuver Fins’ goalie Tiago Rivero in a oneon-one, putting the ’Canes up 1-0. It would then be an all-out battle between both teams until Gabriel Mendoza managed to get one into the back of the net for Marathon to tie the game 1-1, which would be the final score after 80 minutes of excellent play on both sides of the field. For Coral Shores, Joel Lopez and Sebastian Dixon combined in goal for 7 saves.

Marathon’s Tiago Riveo endured an incredible 37 shots on goal, denying all but one. The Hurricanes and Dolphins will have another chance to add a win to their district schedules, this time in Tavernier, on Jan. 12.

The senior sprint specialist now owns two school records in the 100 free and 50 free.

He broke the 50 free record three times, including his historic state championship race. Smith has won numerous district and regional medals and championships, and every relay team he anchored became an instant contender. Smith is the first Conch to win a gold medal at the FHSAA State Championships.

O’Donnell is a 200 IM and 500 freestyle specialist who qualified for regionals in both events as well as the 400 freestyle relay.

O’Donnell has been a top male swimmer for the ’Canes for multiple seasons and will be missed next year.

Team captain Anthony Korzen’s stroke of choice is the breaststroke, which he covered for the Conchs as an individual and on their regional-qualifying relay teams. Korzen is also a solid freestyle swimmer.

Junior Eli Morris helped carry the Conchs in their relay teams, performing his specialty, the backstroke. Morris was integral in advancing Key West past districts and into regionals.

Jeffrey Hoyt leaves the Conchs this year, but not without having left an impression on his team. The senior captain had success in both the 200 IM and 500 free this season and swam legs of relays when needed.

Gracie Lechnar, a butterfly specialist, helped carry the Lady Conchs’ relay teams this season. The senior captain was the top athlete in the butterfly events the entire season.

It’s no surprise that a pair of schools surrounded by water would have excellent swimming programs, and Key West and Coral Shores High Schools do not disappoint. Both programs have consistently produced state-qualifying athletes, and this season, the standout swimmers stood out even more. Both schools brought home hardware from districts and regionals, and Key West’s AJ Smith did not just medal, but won the state championship 50 freestyle race outright. Though Smith graduates, many of this year’s top swimmers will return for more success next season.
