Lately, everything Abbie Sargent touches turns to silver or gold. The hard-working swimmer has dedicated herself to her sport and team and the work has paid off; Sargent won the district championship in the 200 IM and brought home a second gold in the 200 free relay. She went on to earn a pair of silver medals as well, in the 100 breaststroke individual race and the 200 medley relay, and qualified for the next round of competition at regionals in all four events. The relentless junior is not finished competing yet.

“Even with her dominant swims at districts this past Thursday, she is determined to drop time and prove herself even further in our region and at the state level,” head coach Kelly Kater said. For her dedication, effort and continued pursuit of excellence in her sport, Abbie Sargent is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

CORAL SHORES, KEY WEST’S POSTSEASON RUNS CONCLUDE

Coaches already looking forward to next volleyball season

W

hen Marathon and Coral Shores landed in the same playoff bracket last week, it was inevitable that one team’s season would end and one would go on in hopes of making a deep run into districts. Unfortunately for Marathon, the Dolphins were on the losing end of the FHSAA District 16 3A quarterfinal match. The Hurricanes defeated the Fins on Oct. 17, winning all three sets of the match and moving on to the semifinals the following night. There, the third-seeded ’Canes upset Somerset South Homestead, ranked second in the district, 3-1, sending them into the district championship game on Oct. 20 against top-seeded Palmer Trinity.

The road to the championship game was a familiar one for Coral Shores – they played exactly the same trio of teams in the 2022 postseason. The outcomes would be identical, as well. Coral Shores fell to Palmer 3-0, ending the season with a noteworthy 15-10 record.

Hurricanes coach Sam Ovalle had nothing but praise for his hard-working squad.

“I’m so proud of my team.This was a goal of ours from the beginning of the season, to get back to this game and see what happened and we made it back,” he said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get over the hump against a great Palmer team. We didn’t play our best game tonight and they were at the top of their game and it showed.”

Despite the loss, Coral Shores saw fantastic play from senior captain Brooke Mandozzi, who once again led the Lady ’Canes on offense and defense. Mandozzi had seven kills, eight digs, three blocks and a service rating of 3.0 in the game.

“Palmer was really trying to keep the ball away from Brooke all game – you could hear them talking about it,” Ovalle said.

Also stepping up for the ’Canes was Niveah Howard, who appeared on the JV roster until just two weeks ago. Since then, Howard has shown stellar play, leading the team with five blocks against Palmer and scrambling all over the court in a valiant effort to keep the Hurricanes in the game.

“This team has been such a pleasure to coach. I’m going to miss coaching our three seniors so much,” said Ovalle. “Brooke, Crystal (Gutierrez) and Iona (Holmquist) are so special to me and have given so much to the program. They’re amazing players and even better young ladies. … (But) I’m also excited about our future as we have a lot of strong players coming back.”

Key West’s formidable schedule helped them earn the home court advantage in the FHSAA District 16 4A quarterfinals. The Conchs made light work of Miami Killian on Oct. 17, winning in three sets and moving on to the semifinals. There, Key West faced topseeded Gulliver Prep, a perennial powerhouse in prep volleyball.

The Conchs lost 3-0 to the Raiders, a team which went on to win a challenging district and is now ranked first in the regional bracket.

Coach Sara Eckert had nothing but praise for her tenacious team.

“We saw tremendous growth in each player’s individual skills this season,” she said. “Gulliver is a powerhouse and very likely to make a run for the state title this year. It’s unfortunate that we faced them so early in the tournament, but it’s never a bad thing to compete against the best. The hope is for all of the returning players to want it that much more and embrace the challenge to keep developing and reach that same level.”

The Conchs finished the season 8-18 after facing a tough schedule of some of the most talented teams in the state.

‘FAST TIMES’ MEET LIVES UP TO ITS NAME FOR MARATHON Key West’s Makimaa and Marathon’s Vance Bursa crack top five in this week’s competitions

arathon traveled to Miami Country Day to race in the Fast Times meet against a field of nine teams on Oct. 18. The ladies ended up in the middle of the pack in fifth place, while the gentlemen finished in third place overall. Senior Mikkel Ross kept the number one spot for the Lady Fins, finishing the race in 22:57 and in 18th place overall in a field of more than 150 athletes. Behind her were junior Ella Dunn in 23:25 (21st) and senior Rain Banks in 23:51 (23rd). Freshmen Madelyn Thornton, Maeve Merryman and Sara Robinson were fourth through sixth for the Fins, and seventh grader Rebecca Merryman was number seven.

The third-place boys squad saw an unsurprising top three finishers. Vance Bursa finished second overall and first for the Fins in a blazing 16:33.

Younger brother Tony finished 11th overall and second for Marathon in 17:48, a marked improvement from his best times thus far. The oldest Bursa, Jakub, was the third Dolphin to cross the line, in 18:21, good enough for 16th place overall.

Dillon Shelar was next, breaking the 19-minute barrier for the first time. If he can duplicate his 18:56 PR, Marathon will be in great position at districts.

Completing the top seven places for Marathon were Mason Buxton, Allan Taylor and Adrien Holdinga.

Coach Jim Murphy’s team runs deep this season, as Caleb Shelar and Lucian Burns finished within 12 seconds of Holdinga, making the top seven for districts a difficult decision for the veteran coach.

Key West participated in the 305 Classic at the familiar Larry & Penny Thompson park in Miami.

Caylaa Makimaa finished first for the Conchs and fourth overall in a time of 20:16. Naima Thomas was next in 22:09, a personal best by more than 20 seconds. Laira Anaya also recorded a season-best time, clocking in at 23:17 in third place for Key West.

Violet Jangraw, Briana Nodal, Alexa Abad, Mia Steer and Ava Gonzalez rounded out the top finishers for the Lady Conchs. Nodal shaved off nearly a minute from her previous personal best, something quite notable this late in the season. Makimaa and Steer had PRs for the course, which will come in handy at districts, which will be held at the same location. Key West’s boys had a week of rest to help prepare for districts next week.

The Coral Shores boys also attended the 305 Classic to put in some work. Jamie Cary was the first Hurricane to cross the line at 20:51. Nathaniel Shugarman was second in 20:52 and Sean Andrews was third, finishing in 22:12. Taking places four through seven were Connor Daniels, Lochlain James, Tristan Sanchez and Kellan Borbeau. The girls team had the week off to prepare for a final home meet on Oct. 23 before the postseason officially begins.

Key West will use its multirace advantage at Larry & Penny Thompson Park on Nov. 1 at the FHSAA 2A district race. The Conchs will be joined by the Hurricanes for a 5 p.m. girls start while the boys will take their marks at 5:40 p.m. 1A Marathon races at Palmer on Nov. 2, with girls starting at 4:20 p.m. and boys at 5 p.m.

ey West’s record-holding AJ Smith broke even more records at districts this past week, becoming the first district boys double medalist for the Conchs.

With wins in the 50 free and 100 free events, Smith earned an automatic bid to regionals on Saturday, Oct. 28. Smith serves as the anchor for two relay teams, both of which also qualified, making him a very busy swimmer next week as he attempts to become a two-time state qualifier for the southernmost swim team. Smith is ranked first in Region 4 in the 50 and second in the 100.

The Conchs finished fourth in both the boys and girls competitions at the FHSAA District 12 2A championships on Oct. 18. The relay teams fared well in the event, with the 200 medley girls team of Katelyn Noss, Gracie Lechnar, Taylor Gibson and Alyssandra Camargo placing fourth in the event and receiving a bid to regionals. Noss, Lechnar, Camargo and Reeghan Davis teamed up for a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay, which did not quite make the cut for regionals but placed the team in an alternate position should another team be unable to compete.

The 400 free relay team of Noss, Davis, Hadley Bardoni and Megan Fedor placed sixth, advancing to regionals with their time in a fast-paced district. Camargo will be busy next week swimming her relays in addition to the 50 free and 100 free individual events, in which she placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Her times were fast enough to earn at-large bids to the next level of competition.

The boys’ relays were strong as well, advancing the 400 free team of Jeffrey Hoyt, Santiago Gonzalez, Westley Ellerbee and Roan Milelli. The team placed sixth and qualified for an at-large spot via time. Eli Morris, Hugo Blinckmann, Anthony Korzen and AJ Smith placed fourth in the 200 medley relay, advancing to regionals. Hoyt, Milelli, Korzen and Smith also qualified in the 200 free relay, placing fourth at districts.

Gonzalez and Hoyt were given some hope in individual events, with both earning alternate spots in their events.

Gonzalez was 10th in the 200 free and Hoyt placed fifth in the 500 free event.

Coral Shores claimed two district titles of their own at the FHSAA District 12 1A championships on Oct. 21. The Lady ’Canes placed fourth in the competition, advancing all three of their relay teams plus four individuals.

Abbie Sargent was the big winner for the ’Canes, earning a district gold medal in the 200 IM. Sargent earned silver in the 100 breaststroke and qualified as an individual in both events. She went on to earn gold again, this time in the 200 free relay where she teamed up with Layne Smith, Riley Cooper and Allegra Fucaraccio. The same foursome claimed

second in the 200 medley relay, earning silver medals and a bid to regionals in that event. Larkin Dunn, Sophia Figueredo, Rachel Rusch and Lola Young placed fifth in the 400 free relay with a time fast enough to advance to the next level via an at-large bid. Layne Smith placed second in the 200 free and third in the 500 free, giving her four events at regionals.

Fucaraccio qualified in the 200 IM via at-large bid and Figueredo will serve as an alternate in the same event plus the 100 breaststroke should another athlete be unable to compete.

The final individual qualifier for the Lady Canes is Cooper, who will swim at least three events including

her two relays plus the 100 fly. Cooper placed fourth in the event at districts. She also is a long shot to swim a fourth race, the 50 free, in which she is an alternate.

Rusch placed third in her first year of competitive diving but was just under the qualifying score for regionals.

Four athletes on the boys team qualified for regional competition and will join the girls in Fort Lauderdale. The 400 free relay team of Patrick O’Donnell, Anthony Jeffry, Evan Osipov and Mason Osipov placed fifth and qualified for an at-large appearance. The same team took sixth in the 200 free and are the alternate team at regionals. O’Donnell is the lone individual competitor for Coral Shores. He placed fourth in the 200 IM and 500 free and will represent the ’Canes at the next level.

Key West will take on the rest of FHSAA’s 2A Region 4 athletes on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Stuart at the Sailfish Splash. Events begin at 10 a.m. 1A Coral Shores dives in on Friday, Oct. 27 at the Nova Southeastern University Aquatics Complex, also beginning at 10 a.m. Swimmers who manage to make the cut for the big show have just one week after regionals to prepare. This year’s state meet will take place in Ocala at the Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training Center, on Nov. 3 for Key West and Nov. 4 for Coral Shores.

SUGARLOAF CLAIMS CONCH CUP VOLLEYBALL TITLE Sharks defeat longtime rival Basilica School

ct. 21 was a day to remember for the girls and coaches of the Sugarloaf Middle School varsity volleyball team, as the Sharks defeated longtime rival and perennial tournament winner Basilica School in the 2023 Conch Cup. “We wanted to win this tournament so badly,” said assistant coach Jerry Harbin. “Basilica wins this tournament every year, so we really wanted to come home with a victory.”

The varsity Lady Sharks began the day playing Key Largo School, defeating the Tornadoes in a 2-0 match. Next up was a match against Horace O’Bryant School. The Sharks also beat the Buccaneers 2-0. Feeling confident from their previous matches, Sugarloaf set out to play the Basilica School but the Lady Sharks didn’t start off so well, dropping their first set of the tournament.

“Coach Jerry and I had a heart-to-heart with (the team) after that first loss,” said head coach Jen Alexander. “We knew they had to get their heads on straight if they wanted to pull it off.”

The second set began and the Sharks emerged victorious, tying the score 1-1 and forcing a 15-point final set – in tournament play, normal sets are played to 25 points. A back-and-forth affair came down to a 15-15 tie, with one team needing to pull ahead by two points. Basilica scored to go up 16-15, followed by an answer from the Sharks to tie the set 16-16. Starting with a serve from eighth grader Mavis Bishop, the Sharks took a 17-16 lead, with the final point for Sugarloaf coming off an aced serve from Bishop to put the Sharks ahead for good, 18-16.

“My heart was racing during that last game,” said Alexander, who said there “wasn’t a dry eye on the court” after the win. “I kept trying to inspire them during each time out, letting them know they could do it if they really wanted it badly enough. I am so proud of each and every one of them, and I love coaching them so much.”

MARATHON HOMECOMING COMEBACK STALLS ON FINAL DRIVE Coral Shores picks up dominant road win

arathon football always draws a good crowd, and last week’s homecoming celebration packed the bleachers even more. The Fins’ original opponent bowed out weeks into the season, forcing them to scramble for a team to play on short notice. Gateway Prep out of Fort Myers stepped up and traveled all the way to Marathon to give the Dolphins a homecoming game to remember. Although the Fins came up short in the final moments of the game, the hard-fought contest was a good matchup and gave fans a reason to stay in their seats until the final whistle.

Marathon struck in the opening drive of the game off a Braulio Garcia power run. Fabbianho Louis Jeune added the extra point for the Fins, giving the home team hope for a homecoming win.

The Griffins then seemingly recovered from their long trip, scoring on back-to-back drives while holding the Dolphins on defense. But without a kicker, Gateway was not able to convert on their extra point attempts, making the score 7-12.

The Griffins were driving again when Yemcel Garcia enlivened the Dolphins with an interception, turning the ball over to Marathon with just over 30 seconds left in the half. Marathon could not capitalize on the opportunity and the score stood at halftime.

After halftime, the Griffins picked up some momentum, scoring a pair of quick touchdowns to pull ahead 24-7. Marathon found their groove and answered back with another Braulio Garcia touchdown run after a long Josh Wall run to close the gap. With the score at 24-14, Marathon’s defense dug deep to close out the Griffins in the second half.

A Carlos Lezcano 8-yard run put the Fins within reach of a win, and they went on the march, but a grounded snap and a fumble in the final moments of the game ended the hopes for Marathon to come from behind. As the buzzer sounded, the score was 24-21 with the Griffins picking up a road win.

“We are a young team and we have to learn how to win,” said Marathon coach Sean McDonald. “Friday night was an important lesson on how to get there. We need to play with the same intensity as we did in the second half for four entire quarters in order to win games. The team fought hard, but we just ran out of time.”

Up next for the Fins is a star-studded Palmer Trinity at home on Oct. 26 before a trip to Somerset South Homestead the following week to cap off their season.

a resounding victory against Tradition Prep out of Port St. Lucie on Oct. 19. The ‘Canes made the three-hour trip to play the Pirates on their homecoming and senior night celebration.

“We executed well in a festive atmosphere,” Coral Shores coach Ed Holly said.

“It was a much closer game than the score dictated.”

That score, 51-19 in favor of the Hurricanes, spoiled the fun for Tradition Prep and gave Coral Shores their fourth victory of the season.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard on their first drive, but Dantay Diorio had a quick answer, scoring on a 62-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 14-7 in the Hurricanes’ favor.

RJ Dube blocked a punt on an ensuing Tradition Prep drive, giving the ‘Canes the momentum. AJ Putetti scored a 9-yard TD, and a missed extra point made the score 20-7 at the beginning of quarter two. A Jamoris Davis fumble recovery and strong play on both sides capped off the first half.

After halftime, Dantay Diorio carried the ball in for a 43-yard touchdown run.

went for 2 instead of kicking an extra point, something unusual for Holly under such conditions.

As it turns out, there was a perfectly valid explanation. “At their field, when an extra point was good, the ball landed in a swamp with alligators,” Holly said. “I only had three balls to lose, so we had to go for 2.”

Putetti added another nine-yard run and Diorio carried it in for another 2-point conversion at the end of the third quarter, giving the Hurricanes a 36-7 lead.

Quarter four included a long touchdown pass from the Pirates, and bolstered by their energetic crowd, Tradition Prep was driving again. Isaac Holmes put an end to that, intercepting the ball before adding a 30yard touchdown run of his own. Holmes had a second 18-yard TD late in the game, and the Pirates added six on their final possession, making the final score 51-19.

Holmes has been filling in for starting quarterback Yemcel Moreno, who is out with a knee injury. Moreno’s return this season is uncertain, but Holly is hopeful and praised his attitude and leadership from the sidelines. He also had praise for Xico Reynoso, who held the line on both sides of the ball, and for Davis and Eddie Holly on defense. The younger Holly had 15 tackles.

The Hurricanes play Somerset South Homestead on Oct. 27 at home, a team whose running back Holly described as “dynamic” and “legitimate.” Their final game will be a conference playoff contest against the winner of the Archbishop Carroll/Ransom Everglades game the following Thursday night at Harris Park in Homestead.

Key West worked on some fine-tuning and recovery from nagging injuries in their bye week. They will enjoy homecoming on Oct. 27 against Gateway High School out of Fort Myers.

The Conchs’ final regular season game will be the following week in Ft. Lauderdale against undefeated Archbishop McCarthy.

Top spots continue to shift in boys and girls competitions

K

eys golfers decided to meet in the middle for nine more holes of local competition before heading to their respective district tournaments. On Oct. 16, Marathon’s Summer Haines had the low score on her home course with one of the largest margins of victory seen in match play this season.

Also hoping to cap off her season in style is Coral Shores junior Gabby Thomas. Thomas shot a 51 in her final regular season round and has all the skills necessary to advance. Key West’s Claudia Steling was two strokes behind Thomas after a stellar start. Steling, just a sophomore, birdied on hole 1, then had some trouble later in the course, placing her third in the match. Like Haines and Thomas, Steling has what it takes to make it to regionals this season if she plays a solid game. Key West’s Lexi Finigan and Marathon’s Makenna Haines, both freshmen, placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

GOLFERS PUT IN AN EXTRA NINE BEFORE DISTRICTS

Marathon’s Michael Merryman was the boys’ winner, shooting a 39 in his final home match. The senior birdied on hole 4, then shot an eagle on 7, winning the event by four strokes. Key West Junior Andrew Bassett came in second place, followed by freshman Roco Piscetello of Marathon and senior Ryan Kight of Key West, who tied for third with 44s.

Junior Conch Peyton Zubieta scored a 46, good enough for fifth place in the match. Zubieta earned two birdies and an eagle in the round, but a few tough holes mixed in tarnished what would otherwise have been a phenomenal game. Marathon sophomore Dylan Ziels, seventh grader Emmett Merryman and junior Leo Mendez were sixth through eighth, Key West’s Ty Hill was ninth and Mason Thornton of Marathon was 10th.

The top golfers for Coral Shores were Brock Bynum and Derek Ramos, who tied Key West’s Smith Switzer for the 11th spot. Just as with the girls this season, a coveted round at regionals is within grasp of all of the Keys’ top male golfers. It will come down to perseverance, solid play and a bit of luck.
