WELCOME TO THE FLEA MARKET It’s the Upper Keys Rotary Club’s signature fundraiser, and it’s back after a year off due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, presented by Keys Deck & Dock Supply, brings hundreds of vendors back to Founders Park in Islamorada on Feb. 26 and 27. Event-goers will see vendors sprawled across the park with wider aisles and less congestion. This major shopping event has more than 250 vendors from arts and crafts to fishing lures and furniture. Also, be sure to check out new and used boats, antiques and more. With waves of shoppers entering the park, the annual shopping event has raised millions in direct scholarship aid that’s benefited local graduating students and current college scholars for decades.

New to this year’s event is a 50/50 drawing. Simply text the word “ticket” to 786.244.2468 for a chance to win.

DATES: The event goes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27. It’s held at Founders Park, MM 87, bayside, in Islamorada. PARKING: Parking is at Coral Shores High School, MM 89, oceanside. The shuttle bus runs continuously on both days. GATE: The gate is located on the southwest end of the park at the fire station. Suggested admission is $5.

“We are so excited to bring back this event after pivoting to a virtual fundraiser in 2021,” said Rotarian Frank Derfler. “We call it ‘The Boat Show with a Beach.’

FOOD: A number of food trucks will be positioned throughout the park offering everything from donuts and sandwiches to Thai and Mexican cuisine.

“The main goal of the event is raising money to support scholarships for local kids pursuing an education after high school, whether through college, trade school or certification. We’ve awarded more than $2.5 million in the nearly three decades of this event,” Derfler continued. New for 2022 is the inclusion of food trucks throughout the park that will offer a variety of favorites from barbecue and the world-famous super fish sandwiches to specialty tastes including Thai, Mexican and Italian cuisine. See page 22 for a list.

An aerial of the Upper Keys Rotary Club’s Gigantic Nautical Flea Market at Founders Park in Islamorada. BLACKTIP AERIAL/ Contributed This is the 27th year of the Upper Keys Rotary Gigantic Nautical Flea Market. Because of this event, two Rotary Clubs in the Keys are able to make substantial academic and technical school scholarship awards to an average of more than 90 Coral Shores High School graduates every year.

27 YEARS AND COUNTING It takes a village By Frank Derfler

About half of the awards go to students who are already in a college, university, or technical training and proving themselves. The total scholarship awards from the Gigantic Nautical Flea market comes close to $200,000 annually. That money stays in the Keys. Once or twice a year visitors from up north come to the Upper Keys Rotary Club and say, "Hey, this is great! We want to do this. How do you do it?" We tell them that it's easy. You simply have to get substantial help from the local town or village like we get from the village of Islamorada, receive skilled volunteer help from an organization like the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative, get craftsmen from companies like CBT Construction, Massey-Richards Surveying and Mapping, Webb Bros. Contracting and others. Then you need a hard working group of over 100 Rotarians and more than 200 other highly-organized volunteers from the community. It really helps to have the support from companies like Islamorada Brewery & Distillery. You also need a venue like Founders Park so you can create what we call "The Big Boat Show with a Beach.” Don't forget the massive parking and bus transportation like we have at Coral Shores High School.

Success means having loyal annual sponsors like Hurricane Boat Lifts, Caribee Boat Sales & Marina and The Pool Spa Billiard Store. Plus, you need a major presenting sponsor, like Keys Deck & Dock Supply, and a major sponsor, like AJ Vetter P.A. and Anna Richards with Coastal Realty. Finally, it helps to hold the event the weekend after the Miami Boat Show so you have vendors with national reach who come to South Florida for the week. And oh, this year we included a food truck rally with over a dozen food trucks. That's all.

WHY WE DO IT In past years, the Upper Keys Rotary Club and Key Largo Rotary Club have written more than $250,000 in checks to benefit students graduating from Coral Shores High School, as well as some local home-schooled students. Graduating from high school, many students say assistance from Rotary helped them continue their journey and eventually land a job.

INTERACTIVE MAP Attendees of this year’s Gigantic Nautical Flea Market can find hundreds of vendors by using their phones. In addition to the map and vendor list in this guide, you can also download an interactive map and guide to your phone. Simply visit www. rotarymarket.info and search the show by vendor name or by the types of products you’re seeking.

THE IMPACT Flea market proceeds in recent years total around $500,000. Direct benefits have been paid to more than 20 colleges and universities to help more than 180 students. Many students receive continuing scholarships beyond their freshman year. In addition to professional degrees, Rotary clubs also support students in technical schools, such as aircraft maintenance training, marine engine maintenance, law enforcement and EMT training.

WHAT IS IT The 27th Gigantic Nautical Flea Market presented by Keys Deck & Dock Supply takes place Saturday and Sunday, Feb 26-27, at Founders Park in Islamorada. From 35 vendors in 1995, the flea market has grown to more than 250 today. Members from the local Rotary clubs are among the hundreds of volunteers who will be out making the event fun for all. Despite organizers’ best efforts, there are some traffic tie-ups. Attendees are encouraged to park at Coral Shores High School, MM 90, oceanside, and take the free shuttle to the park.

TAKE STOCK Clubs also support local students through donations to the Take Stock in Children program. The money, which is matched by the state legislature, stays in Monroe County. Take Stock in Children Inc. is a nonprofit organization that transforms Florida one student at a time. Working in every county throughout Florida, the mission is to break the cycle of poverty for low-income, academically qualified students by providing opportunities for post-secondary education.

“I’m really happy with the balance I found in my life with my new position.”

ON A PATH OF SUCCESS CORAL SHORES 2013 GRADUATE LAURA IRWIN By Jim McCarthy

New adventures await as graduates say goodbye to their high school years. Experiences of a lifetime lay ahead with some entering the military or workforce and others enrolling in trade school or college.

Irwin’s life motto is, “Follow your gut. Stay true to yourself and do your best.”

Those continuing their studies face the costs surrounding that next educational journey. But Keys students confront those financial challenges in various ways. Thanks to local Rotary clubs, young learners obtain that extra support needed to pursue aspirations of flying airplanes, caring for sick patients or educating the next generation. For Class of 2013 graduate Laura Irwin, financial challenges alleviated through Rotary scholarships propelled her to a senior accountant job with a major tech company. s With family, Irwin moved to the Keys from the small touristy mountain town of Leavenworth, Washington. Sixteen at the time, she quickly involved herself with the island community and Coral Shores High School’s Interact Club. “It kind of gave me a big sense of community for someone who’s moving to an island where so many people grew up together,” said Irwin, whose mom grew up in the Keys. “I have a lot of family down there, which is how we ended up moving to the area. “Being involved in the Rotary Interact Club opened up the door to be able to make connections with people in the community,” Irwin continued. Upon graduation, Irwin attended the University of Florida, where she first majored in finance. She ended up receiving her

bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting. Irwin spent three years as an undergrad and two years in graduate school. Irwin said the University of Florida caught her eye as a top 10 school for finance. “I knew I wanted to be in business in high school,” Irwin said. “I also really liked the idea of going to a large university because I think I was starved for connections. I love going out and meeting new people, hearing new stories and having all these diverse experiences. Being in these two small-townoriented places my whole life, I really wanted to get out there and explore a lot.” A world of numbers intrigued Irwin as she entered college. “With finance, I couldn’t conceptualize what my job would look like after college,” she said. “With accounting, I could see what I’d be doing. I had a sense that I needed to go into accounting.” Irwin began her career with PwC, one of the world’s largest accounting firms. She spent three years in Tampa working for the company, which eventually saw her moving up to a senior role. “I met a lot of cool colleagues that I’m still in touch with. I’m really thankful I ended up there,” Irwin said. Roughly five months ago, she moved on to work for the tech company ZoomInfo as a senior accountant. As much as she loved the PwC job, Irwin felt ready for a new direction and a different challenge. Irwin said she came across a job opening with ZoomInfo,

which recently went public and registered with the SEC. Formerly known as DiscoverOrg during its founding in 2007, ZoomInfo helps sales, marketing and recruiting professionals meet their numbers and goals. “As much as I enjoyed the senior role and managing staff at PwC, I wanted to keep learning while having time to invest in myself more,” Irwin said. “The position is new and changing a lot. But the role is dynamic and involves a variety of projects.”

In five years, Irwin is hoping to start a family and settle down in a city. Irwin is thankful for her high school and college experiences. She’s also appreciative of the financial support received from the Upper Keys Rotary Club. Irwin graduated with decent grades, but finances became the big obstacle as she eyed college. “Having the financial support was huge. I don’t think I would have taken the same path if I didn't receive the scholarships I received. It would have been a different path that I would be somewhere else. Right now, I’m so happy where I am.” When not working, Irwin enjoys the outdoors and cycling. She’s a member of the Wynwood Cycling team that cycles to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis. Irwin participates in rides and fundraising through sponsored events.

RECIPIENTS SAY THANKS The Gigantic Nautical Flea Market will see thousands over a twoday period visiting vendors and finding everything from fishing gear to art. They’ll also enjoy food with the entrance of food trucks to this year’s activities, as well as drinks available at beer carts and booths. Behind the scenes, Rotarians and volunteers work for the students of the Upper Keys. Funds raised each year go to support a student’s education. And each year, scholarship recipients give updates on their academic endeavors and how they’re doing. Here’s a snippet of what Keys graduates are doing and achieving today, and what’s ahead in the future.

I'm a sophomore at Columbia University studying chemical engineering. Although this is my second year at Columbia, it's actually my first year living in the city. I've been enjoying wandering the city, navigating the city and eating all types of food. The Rotary scholarship has really helped me settle into the city by providing funds I've used to buy dorm essentials, books and other supplies. The scholarships I've received have been really influential in my ability to afford extra expenses that arise from living here, and I'm extremely grateful for the continued support.

Jason Castillo I am a second year student at Georgia Institute of Technology. I am currently a mathematics major and plan to apply for a computer science minor beginning next semester. The Rotary scholarship helps me attend Georgia Tech and cover various expenses such as housing, out of state tuition and others that I am accountable for. I really appreciate the support that the Upper Keys Rotary provides me. Thank you.

Samantha Wright Javier Hernandez I am currently attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach and pursuing a bachelor's degree in aviation business administration with a minor in aviation maintenance science. My Rotary scholarship helped me pay for my tuition. Without it, I wouldn't have been able to pursue my career because it wouldn't have been financially viable for me. Upper Keys Rotary gave me the ability to go to the college that specializes in my career, which I've been striving towards for years.

I am currently at FSW in Fort Myers. From here, I plan on transferring to Florida Gulf Coast University to major in health sciences with a minor in medical humanities. The Rotary scholarship has been a huge help to my schooling. It helps fund my education by paying for school-related necessities such as my tuition, books and supplies.

Thanks to the Upper Keys Rotary Scholarship, I was able to pursue my dream of attending Florida State University. I absolutely love the school and the environment it has surrounded me with. I am applying to the digital media productions major in the school of communications, and spend most of my free time helping out on the set of short films or at the FSU gym. I have also maintained a perfect GPA thus far and plan to keep good grades. Rotary has enabled me to be very successful in college, and for that I will be forever grateful.

I received the Rotary scholarship when I graduated from Coral Shores in 2021. I am currently a residential student at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. I am pursuing a degree in communications while working a part-time job on campus and playing on the club tennis team. This scholarship has been a huge blessing with affording my time at college thus far, and I am extremely grateful for Upper Keys Rotary and the opportunity they have given me.

I am a sophomore at Rollins College in Winter Park. I am really enjoying my time at Rollins College as I am pursuing a business management major with a minor in environmental studies. I'm a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and I am on the Rollins College sailing team. With the help from the generous Rotary scholarship, I've been able to attend this wonderful college, as it helps to relieve some of the financial burden of college expenses. I am so lucky to be part of a community that is dedicated to helping myself and others.

Paris Gasser I am happy to announce that I will be graduating from Florida State University in the spring of 2022 with a degree in recreation and tourism management. During the spring semester of 2022, I will be relocating from Tallahassee to St. Petersburg. In St. Petersburg, I will be completing my internship at the Tradewinds Island Grand Resort. At the resort, I will be shadowing the activities manager and learning new skills and knowledge in this industry. The Rotary scholarship has helped me pay for my student housing for my fall semester. I am beyond grateful for our supportive community and the Rotary scholarship. Thank you to everyone that contributes to helping the students of the Florida Keys.

Lorena Carballo I’m attending Miami Dade Community College. I decided to stay close to home with my family but my plan is to finish my prerequisites at MDC and transfer to Florida International University. I plan to major in dental hygiene. My Rotary scholarship has helped me so much; it has covered my tuition and helped me save more so I can finish my college career debt free. I am very thankful to the Upper Keys Rotary.

Sarah Makepeace I’m a graduating senior at Palm Beach Atlantic University, majoring in biology with a concentration in molecular biology and biotechnology. I intend to continue my education with a master’s in dietetics and pursue a career as a registered dietitian nutritionist. I’m so grateful to have received financial assistance from the Upper Keys Rotary for all four years of my undergraduate career. It has allowed me to attend PBAU, a private university, where I’ve had a close-knit and personal educational experience. My whole life, I’ve enjoyed going to the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, but I’m especially appreciative now having benefited so much from it.

Lucia Rodriguez I’m currently a first year student at the University of Central Florida, where I plan to major in health sciences. The Rotary scholarship helps me cover various expenses such as tuition and housing. I’m very grateful for the Rotary's support. Thank you. Vanessa Pelaez I am at UCF’s Burnett Honors College studying to become a mechanical engineer. My Rotary scholarship helps me to worry less about my finances and focus more on my career, which means I have had time to consider activities such as internships. I have recently been notified that I have become a finalist for a mechanical engineering internship at a company called Limbitless Solutions. Rotary helped me make this possible.

Angelina Nappi I am currently attending the University of Florida and I am a pre-medical student receiving my degree in behavioral analysis. I am also a member of the Self, Mind, Society Psychology Laboratory working as an undergraduate research assistant. The Rotary scholarship has allowed me to have a more stress-free first semester of college. I am grateful to the Upper Keys Rotary for this opportunity.

I am a third year environmental engineering student at the University of Florida (Go Gators). I currently work in the UF technology licensing department, do research in hydroponic water systems and serve as an engineering peer advisor. I am also the philanthropy chair of my sorority, and I am looking forward to interning at Kimley-Horn this summer in West Palm Beach.

I am a third-year student at the University of Florida pursuing a master's degree in economics. On campus I am involved in several organizations such as Global Legal Empowerment Brigades and Global Gator Guides. I am also a member of Alpha Chi Omega and the pre-law fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta. After completing my degree, I hope to attend law school or work in the financial sector as an analyst or consultant. The Rotary has given me the opportunity to focus on school and my involvement without worrying about finances. I am so thankful for the continued support and encouragement they have offered me throughout the years.

Callie Bloom I am a freshman at the University of Florida. I graduated from Coral Shores High School in May of 2021 and was extremely grateful to be one of the students that received an Upper Keys Rotary scholarship. I moved up to Gainesville in June as I did a summer term and I absolutely fell in love with my school. The University of Florida has endless amounts of opportunities for all of the students here. Starting in the fall of 2021, I auditioned and made Danza, which is the University of Florida's dance company. I also got straight A’s for this semester, which was really exciting for me. My major is applied physiology and kinesiology with my ultimate goal to become a physical therapist specializing in sports medicine. This semester, I am in two sciences, biology and chemistry, so I have been studying a lot but I am doing very well. I am so happy that I am at UF and I am grateful for my Upper Keys Rotary scholarship.

Raffie Baker In the first semester of my sophomore year, with help from the Rotary scholarship, I attended Royal Holloway University of London through University of Florida’s exchange program. I am grateful for the experience and everything I learned while I was abroad. Sheila Gonzalez I am currently a freshman at the University of Florida. Thanks to Rotary I’ve had the privilege of attending such an amazing school. This scholarship has allowed me to continue to follow my dreams and focus on my studies to become a future doctor. I am deeply appreciative of their continuous support and generosity for this community and me.

I'm a junior studying chemical engineering with a minor in biomolecular engineering at the University of Florida. I'm involved with undergraduate research in algae biofuels, Engineering Ambassadors, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Chemical Engineering Peer Advisors, and Stomp the Swamp (UF's rhythm tap dancing team). Along with taking classes, I have a part-time remote internship with Idaho National Laboratory, where I'm analyzing clean energy technology supply chains in the U.S. for an executive order. My Rotary scholarship has allowed me to be very involved with everything that I do, so I am extremely grateful for all of the support I've received over these past few years.

I am currently in my second year at The University of South Florida in Tampa. I'm a full-time student as a marketing major here. Thanks to the Rotary scholarship I have been able to afford my education and housing away from home. This has allowed for so much personal growth and stability in my academic endeavors. I cannot thank the Rotarians enough for the scholarship.

I’m a junior at the University of North Florida currently majoring in communication with a focus in public relations. I also have two minors, one in entrepreneurship and one in creative writing. The help I’ve received from the Upper Keys Rotary Club over the past three years has not only greatly impacted my college experience, but has given me the ability to focus on my academics without the stress of financial restrictions. I am forever grateful for the Upper Keys Rotary Club and their role in helping me receive a fulfilling education.

Christian Ignacio I study in Tampa at the University of South Florida. I am majoring in chemical engineering and I’m involved in a few clubs, such as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Rotaract. I have been fortunate to receive the Rotary scholarship for the past two years as it has dramatically reduced my payments on monthly expenses. It has allowed me to put more time and effort into my studies and additional opportunities outside of school. The Rotary's work and support for other students and me are profound, and it is always a pleasure to work with them.

Ella Marsden I just started my fourth semester of college at the University of Pennsylvania and declared a cinema and media studies major with a minor in consumer psychology. I love my classes and have met so many great people this past year! I’m extremely grateful for the award of the Jon and Julie Landau Scholarship and the support of the Upper Keys Rotary Club.
