AL ALTUVE

Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower FL Keys

Since joining the Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Florida Keys Board in 2023, Al Altuve has become a true part of the Habitat family. He serves on the Homeowner Selection Committee, helps bridge language barriers as a Spanish translator, and keeps volunteers smiling with pizza and encouragement. Al’s kindness and dedication make a lasting difference for both our team and the families we serve.

Bahama Village Music Program

Frank has helped at every BVMP event without any hesitation. He shows up early and leaves late no matter the circumstance. Frank loves the program and what it stands for and has the desire to learn the saxophone himself. He enjoys being a mentor to the older students and watching them grow and learn and become proficient on their respective instrument of choice and ultimately going to play in various arenas and colleges.

Special Olympics

Florida Monroe

Ken Ayers is the person everyone relies on at Special Olympics Florida – Monroe County, consistently stepping in to transport athletes, load equipment, support coaches, and keep the program running smoothly. From driving

athletes to practices and delivering gear across the Florida Keys to chaperoning overnight trips to State and Regional Games, his dependability and kindness are evident in everything he does. Ken’s quiet dedication helps athletes feel safe and supported while allowing coaches to focus on training.

JERRY BALTES

The Educational Coalition for Monroe County Jerry Baltes began volunteering with the Educational Coalition for Monroe County during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting weekly drive-through food distributions when help was urgently needed. He has since become an integral part of ECMC’s mission by securing funding for the annual Gifts for Teens Project and holiday food distributions, supporting Champions for Change, mentoring students, hosting senior send-off celebrations, and even driving students and chaperones to a national prevention conference.

KEY WEST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Guidance/Care Center

Key West United Methodist Church’s (KWUMC) Old Stone Coffeehouse has hosted a monthly night out called “A Date with Paint” for the past few years. Maj Johnson provides the materials and instruction, and the church hosts the space, snacks and socialization. A Date with Paint night is an escape from electronics and all that is multitasking for just a few hours to focus on something beautiful, learn techniques, meet new people, and go home with something tangible. All the money raised goes to local nonprofit organizations including the Guidance/ Care Center.

Unity of the Keys Spiritual Center

Kevin Beede is an inexhaustible volunteer whose commitment to the mission and vision of Unity of the Keys Spiritual Center is felt in every corner of our community. He manages all property maintenance, oversees the Technical Team for Sunday services, enhances the community webpage, and serves faithfully on the Board of Trustees. Alongside his wife, Robin, Kevin readily steps in to support special events and programs, always with a generous spirit and a welcoming smile.

Upper Keys Humane Society

Angela has been the heart of the Upper Keys Humane Society for the past decade, dedicating countless hours as a volunteer and serving with unwavering commitment as President. Stepping into this demanding role was no small task, yet she met every challenge with grace, strength, and determination. Angela spent hours at the shelter each day ensuring animals received the care, advocacy, and love they deserved, while also supporting staff, strengthening operations, and helping hundreds of animals find safety and hope.

Florida Keys Wildlife Society

Clark Boggs is one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet—and one of the most quietly impactful. He volun-

teered for many years with Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge, supporting hands-on conservation efforts such as invasive plant removal, woodrat habitat construction, and enhancement of crocodile nesting areas. Clark joined the Board of Directors of the Florida Keys Wildlife Society in 2015, where he has become one of our most dedicated ambassadors and effective fundraisers.

WENDY BONILLA Marathon Chamber of Commerce

Wendy does so much for our Middle Keys community. She single-handedly raises funds for Marathon High School seniors each year, growing the program from just a few hundred dollars to more than $20,000 annually. She also helps sell Chamber raffle tickets that benefit the scholarship program, personally selling more than 200 tickets by calling nearly every Chamber member. Wendy gives tirelessly and never asks for anything in return, and she was recently honored with the Chamber’s Best Friend Award.

EVGENIYA BRASWELL Literacy Volunteers of America Monroe Count Literacy Volunteers’ Volunteer of the Year, Gina Braswell, started at LVA learning English herself as a student. Through hard work, she completed the tutor training certification and became a tutor, truly living the American dream. Gina found a wonderful husband, became an American citizen, and now teaches English for Russian speakers at LVA. Gina never says no when asked for help and does everything from mentoring students to decorating the office.

MarrVelous Pet Rescues

Cathy truly embodies the heart and spirit of rescue. She is the kind of person who rarely says no when asked to help, always ready to jump in wherever she is needed and always with a smile. Cathy has been the driving force behind most, if not all, of our pet transports, ensuring dogs get safely to where they need to go, while also covering the office, helping at events and meet-andgreets, and cleaning up before, during, and after busy days. She does it all with love, grace, and genuine joy, treating every dog she meets as if they were her own.

William Weech American Legion Post 168

Mr. Brown has dedicated countless hours over the past several years fundraising for the Christmas Brown Bag and Gift Giveaway sponsored by William Weech American Legion Post 168. Through his hard work, more than 100 children each year receive a Christmas gift, along with a hot lunch and a brown bag filled with goodies, made possible with the support of Post members and Auxiliary Unit 168. In addition to this annual effort, Mr. Brown plays an instrumental role in running BINGO and helping keep the Post home clean and sanitary.

the Foundation. In addition to serving as Grants Chair and the Investment Chair, Marian started her own scholarship fund to support Middle Keys high school students. She came to the Foundation with years of philanthropic experience and was a huge part of our massive growth and our expansion throughout the Keys. Marian gave both her time and financial resources to the community and left a legacy gift that will continue to support the Florida Keys in perpetuity.

CHLOE BYGREN Save Our Pines

For the past two years, Chloe Bergen has been actively involved with Save Our Pines and its ongoing mission to preserve the canopy of Australian pines at Fort Zachary Taylor for future generations to enjoy and appreciate. Their cultural history and natural shade make the park the most popular beach in Key West. Last year, Chloe tirelessly fundraised for the March picnic despite facing last minute challenges, and we are grateful that she has agreed to support the event again in the coming year.

Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park

Dennis Caltagirone is a founding and current board member of the Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and served on the original organizing committee. When the Friends became an official nonprofit in 2019, he volunteered to serve as the first treasurer and quickly recognized the need for a steady source of funding to support the organization’s mission. Dennis established a donation program at the park and personally trained every volunteer and park ranger at the entrance station.

The Studios of Key West

For years, Kendall Cameron has donated her formidable skills as a theater lighting designer to ensure that everyone on stage at The Studios of Key West looks their best. This past year, she was particularly invaluable during the redesign and reimagining of the Helmerich Theater, leading the effort to rehang and reprogram the entire lighting system. Her commitment, skill, and generosity have made a lasting difference, and her contribution could not be more timely or deserving of celebration.

Key West Impromptu Classical Concerts

The Board of Impromptu Classical Concerts wishes to honor the memory of Prudence Churchill who passed away in the spring of 2025. She was the President of the Friends of the Library, mentor in the Take Stock in Children program, and a member of the Harry’s Girls & Auxiliary in support of the Harry S. Truman Little White House. However, it was her leadership as an Impromptu long-term board member that navigated the young concert series to financial support and ultimately national and international music-performance recognition.

Key West Art & Historical Society

The Key West Art & Historical Society is deeply grateful for Ron’s unwaver-

ing dedication. Week after week, he volunteers as a Docent, sharing his passion for history and the depth of insight that brings our stories to life. For three years, visitors at the Key West Museum of Art & History and the Key West Lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters have been welcomed by his warmth, knowledge, and genuine love of the past. With the addition of his Road Scholar tours, even more guests now benefit from his thoughtful storytelling.

CORY Christina’s Courage Christina Cory began working with the Christina’s Courage Board of Directors a little over a year ago, and in that short time has made an extraordinary impact. She assisted with updating Board bylaws, refurbished a bench dedicated to the Center for victims’ comfort and use, worked closely with the Center’s SANE nurse, and coordinated a large scale remodel of the Center to better serve victims. Her work has been instrumental in the reorganization of the Board and in increasing awareness among community leaders.

COSTA Presents in Paradise We know her as Grandma Elf. She is the volunteer who is there day and day out to make Christmas happen. She is checking our lists, and putting together bags for children throughout the Keys. She is tireless - we often show up to find that she has been at work all day long, helping to pull it all together during our most rushed time of year. We look to her for her wisdom and humor. She commands all the attention in the room. She has certainly become one of the most treasured Elves in our program!!!

One Human Family Foundation

A talented Actor and dedicated Activist for Equality, Fritzie is an essential part of the warm greetings given to our visitors through the Key West Business Guild where she serves as Associate Director. For years, Fritzie has been a strong supporter of One Human Family, our island’s message of unity, equality and diversity, taking that message to World Pride in Washington DC this year. Her boundless energy and captivating smile exemplify the very best of our island.

Montessori Children’s School of Key West

Evan, Owen, and Richard, known as “The Dream Team,” volunteered countless hours toward the acquisition and successful permitting of our new Upper Elementary and Adolescent Academy satellite campus located at 1025 White Street. Their contributions of expertise, time, and positive encouragement made this additional school a reality. The generosity of local businesses and community members has also been integral to the more than 50 years of success at Montessori Children’s School.

Jolene Evans is a true unsung hero for families in the Florida Keys. As Director of Nursing Operations at

Lower Keys Medical Center, she goes far beyond meeting medical needs by empowering her team to ensure every family is heard, respected, and supported while their safety and emotional needs are met. She works closely with the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition to connect families to vital community resources so no one falls through the cracks.

Islamorada Moose Lodge & Upper Keys Humane Society

Gary, better known as “Woobie”, is the behind the scenes person who is always there to help, day or night. He has rescued both animals and people in their most serious times of need and has been instrumental in raising funds to support scholarships, animals, veterans, children, seniors, and anyone who needs help. On three separate occasions, people can say their lives were changed because Woobie was reached in a medical emergency and helped get them airlifted to Miami.

The College of the Florida Keys Foundation

Since joining The College of the Florida Keys Foundation Board in April 2021, Lisa Ferringo has been a key leader dedicated to advancing the mission of CFK. She served as Vice Chair beginning in July 2022 and became Chair in July 2025, helping guide board priorities and strengthen community relationships. Lisa has devoted countless volunteer hours to advocating for CFK, promoting its programs, and expanding awareness of its impact. Her efforts to connect CFK with important industry and business partners have created meaningful opportunities for students and the broader community.

Florida Keys Outreach Coalition

Raymond, known as Mr Fitz, is the full time volunteer pantry manager at FKOC’s Loaves and Fish Food Pantry and truly the heart of its mission. He keeps the pantry organized and welcomes every client with a warm smile, helping ensure that more than two hundred fifty households receive nutritious food each month. For the past five years, his quiet dedication and steady presence have made a meaningful difference for families across the community.

Catherine, known as Cathy, Foote is a generous volunteer and a truly compassionate person who consistently goes above and beyond to support our patients. She shows kindness, patience, and genuine care in every interaction. Cathy is deeply dedicated to making sure patients get to their medical appointments safely and on time, often putting their needs ahead of her own. Her steady commitment and selfless service make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve, and we are grateful for the comfort and support she provides every day.

Roy and Stephanie Freeman have been extraordinary volunteers with

I.CARE, bringing unwavering dedication and contagious enthusiasm to coral restoration efforts in the Middle and Upper Florida Keys. Whether diving to transplant coral and sponge fragments, tending to existing outplants through careful maintenance activities, or contributing countless hours at the land based nursery when diving was not possible, they always show up with reliability and heart.

Each year, John spends countless hours securing prizes and raffle donations from local businesses for the Kids Bridge Fishing Tournament in Big Pine Key. Because of his efforts, more than two hundred children who participate in this free community event are guaranteed to go home with a prize and a smile. His dedication helps create a fun and welcoming experience for families and keeps this beloved tradition strong year after year.

Key Largo Sunset Rotary Erin has shown a true spirit of Rotary Service above Self! She chairs our monthly service project at Oasis Nursing Home and helps with all of our service project we can always count on her to volunteer, sponsor and give back! George Garrett serves our community in many leadership roles, including City Manager for Marathon, President of the LMC Board, Class XXIV graduate, member of the Marathon Rotary Club Board, and a member of both the Local Advisory Board for Mote in the Florida Keys and the Sanctuary Advisory Committee for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and its Water Quality Protection Program Steering Committee. His tireless and generous leadership has been integral to LMC and to building strong connections through education for county wide community leaders.

Marathon Wild Bird Center

Since joining the Marathon Wild Bird Center in June 2025, Wendy Gates has proven to be an indispensable asset through her dedication. Most significantly, Wendy has helped transform the organization’s financial future by spearheading a grant writing initiative that has already secured forty five thousand dollars in funding. This critical support, facilitated by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, directly enabled the purchase of a new bird rescue vehicle, ensuring the center can continue its life saving mission with improved efficiency.

MCC Key West’s Cooking with Love Unsung Heroes this year are a married couple who have volunteered with the program for more than ten years. Sharon Mulvey and Ginger Boncek show up almost every Saturday to help prepare and serve meals with kindness and dedication. Their support goes even further, as they are also generous meal sponsors and regularly deliver meals to neighbors in need.

Week after week, they give their time, their energy, and their hearts to this ministry.

Forgotten Felines of the Florida Keys Inc

Morgan Gotti has become an invaluable part of Forgotten Felines of the Florida Keys through her compassion, dedication, and hands on involvement in our Trap Neuter Return efforts. Over the past year, she has volunteered countless hours to feed, trap, transport, and care for community cats, often responding to late night calls and early morning feedings with patience and kindness. Her impact has strengthened our mission, supported fellow volunteers, and brought hope to a cause that depends on everyday heroes like her.

Old Island Restoration Foundation

Arthur has been a volunteer docent with the Oldest House Museum and Gardens, operated by the Old Island Restoration Foundation, since 2017. He first discovered the House while researching African American culture in Key West and, although it did not provide the data he was seeking, he quickly fell in love with its history and became a docent. His continued commitment, caring demeanor, and genuine interest in the cultural richness and family heritage

of the House have made him one of our most valued docents.

Music With Heart, Inc.

On March 14, Music With Heart will host its major fundraising event of 2026, Kim Gordon’s Black and Red Masquerade Ball, a music and dance celebration to fund after school meals for local children in need this summer. Kathy is donating her time and talent to transform the Key West Theater into a magical Venetian Carnival setting. Her creativity and generous spirit will help make this important event both beautiful and successful. Music With Heart is deeply grateful for her remarkable contribution, which will support an urgent community need and bring lasting benefit to the children we serve.

Star of the Sea Foundation

Since joining SOS in 2023, Leila has become an irreplaceable part of our pantry family. She shows up every week with a smile and a willingness to do whatever is needed, often stepping in on short notice and staying for full shifts to make sure the work gets done. Her kindness, dependability, and genuine care for others uplift everyone around her and remind us why this work matters. Though she often says how blessed she feels to help, it is truly SOS that is blessed to have her on our team.

She consistently offered her time and professional skills at no cost to support the school and assist families facing challenges. Receiving on behalf of Cara today are her two children, Thomas and Emily.

Jorge Jimenez and Nancy 3 as this year’s Unsung Hero and Heroine for their outstanding research, service, and ongoing commitment to our Land and Water Acknowledgment, a meaningful social justice action that reminds us of our roots. Together, they helped shape our opening commitment to sharing and preserving the unique heritage of the Florida Keys for future generations. Jorge Jimenez and Nancy 3 truly live the values of Unitarian Universalism through both their advocacy and their everyday acts of service.

NANCY 3 HOFFMAN

Key West High School TIES Program

Nancy 3 volunteered to teach a class of adults with disabilities on Friday mornings last year. She taught songs and dances from cultures around the world and was patient and kind, reaching every student through her voice, her patience, and her accordion. The students looked forward to spending time with her, singing in foreign languages, playing

percussion instruments, tossing Lummi sticks, and dancing with one another. TIES students were able to learn social, recreational, musical, and artistic skills from this outstanding community volunteer.

BRANDI HORTON

United Way of Collier and the Keys-Monroe County Brandi Horton joined the United Way of Collier and the Keys Board in 2019, inspired by memories of her grandfather’s service and the pin he proudly wore as a reminder of the power of giving back. Since joining, Brandi has been a dedicated leader on the Local Advisory Board and played a key role in launching and growing the annual Feed the Keys food drive in honor of the late Mike Forster. Today, she serves as Chair of the Local Advisory Board, a member of the Board of Directors and Philanthropy Committee, and Co Chair of the Community Investment Grant Committee.

JADA JANTZ

Samuel’s House, Inc.

Jada began volunteering with Samuel’s House three to four years ago and has continued to give her time and energy in countless ways. She helps clean and organize office areas, prepares donated items, and supports many community events including National Night Out, the Marlin Tournament, Women of Integrity and Men of Valor, and the annual Polar Plunge. Jada also leads the year end mail out fundraiser, organizing thousands of letters sent to businesses and community supporters each November and December.

JARVIE Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys

Robin Jarvie has been a dedicated volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys for more than five years, regularly coming in twice a week and working with the energy and commitment of several people. She consistently steps in wherever help is needed and brings a strong work ethic to every task she takes on. In addition to her hands on service, Robin also serves on the family selection committee, where she helps ensure that affordable housing opportunities reach those who need them most in our community.

Barn Theatre

Julie Jeffers goes above and beyond by stepping in to help the Red Barn in every way she can. With her warm smile at the box office and her friendly voice on the phone, she makes everyone feel welcome from the very first moment. She also gives generously of her time and talents for fundraisers and opening nights, helping make each event special and successful. Her beautiful flower displays and thoughtful catering are deeply appreciated and add a personal touch to every gathering.

Nancy Johnson has been an invaluable behind the scenes force at the Key West Art Center for many years. A Canadian snow-

bird, Nancy volunteers once a week during the months she and her wife live in Key West, reliably staffing the gallery desk and helping ensure smooth daily operations during our busiest season. Though she is not an artist herself, she is one of our most dedicated supporters through both her consistent volunteer service and her generous financial contributions.

BETINA JUSTICE

Anchors Aweigh Club, Inc

Betina Justice has served on the Anchors Aweigh Board of Directors since May 2024 and has been an active member of the Fundraising Committee since joining the board. In March 2025, she launched a new spring fundraiser, the Mocktail Classic, which was both well received and financially successful. She is already preparing to host the event again in March 2026 and is working enthusiastically to make it even bigger and better. When the Silent Auction Committee needed extra support this fall, Betina immediately stepped in and helped secure auction donations.

Key West Woman’s Club

Eileen Kawaler has been a devoted member of the Key West Woman’s Club since 2003 and served as president from 2008 to 2010, two of the busiest and most transformative years in recent history. During her presidency the House Restoration Fund was established, supporting major projects including restoration of the original wood floors. As Membership Chair, she helped grow and reengage the membership, increasing the club’s charitable giving across the Keys, and under her leadership the club launched its first website and updated member resources.

Keys Choral Arts

Tom Keller is an invaluable part of Keys Choral Arts and the only non singing member of the Board of Directors, yet he consistently provides extraordinary dedication and support. He shows up early, stays late, and takes on the many tasks other directors cannot manage while they are focused on concert activities, smoothly handling logistics and front of house operations that greatly enhance the audience experience.

WILLOW KESSEL

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium

Willow is a dedicated young environmental and marine science professional who has supported Mote Marine Laboratory’s mission of coral reef restoration and research since early 2025. From coral husbandry and restoration material construction to invertebrate collection and coral microfragmentation, her skills have grown quickly, making her an integral part of our volunteer team. Working closely with Staff Biologist Kelly Logan, Willow now helps train artificial intelligence to identify coral and fish species from routine monitoring images.

St Paul’s Episcopal Church

Sarah coordinates ushers for regular services and special events, organizes music for the choir, and sings joyfully as a choir member herself. She welcomes guests with warmth and grace, counts parish

offerings with care, and helps organize St Paul’s participation in community parades. One of her greatest impacts is through Loads of Love, the church’s community laundry ministry that she co founded in 2022. This program, neighbors with limited resources are able to have clean clothes and experience dignity and care.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 168

Mrs. Knowles Brown is always the first person to arrive at our events and the last one to leave, making sure everything runs smoothly from start to finish. She handles most, if not all, of the shopping for our community wide fundraisers and give back efforts, ensuring we have everything needed to serve others well. She also works behind the scenes to make sure events are properly staffed, organized, and prepared to meet the goals of our organization.

KIM KOCH

MERC (Monroe Emergency Reserve Corps)

Kim has served as President of MERC, the Monroe Emergency Reserve Corps, since its founding in 2018 following Hurricane Irma, when the need for trained emergency volunteers became clear. Under her leadership, MERC has provided preparedness classes, supported Monroe County Office of Emergency Management, and participated in county planning sessions, emergency drills, shelter operations, food bank support, and flood response after Ian. Kim not only coordinates these efforts but also serves alongside other volunteers.

Growing Hope Foundation

Lisa has been part of the Grimal Grove story long before it carried that name, witnessing the decline of the property and supporting its rebirth when rehabilitation began in 2013. After Hurricane Irma devastated Big Pine Key in 2017 and nearly wiped out the Zebra Longwing butterfly population, Lisa stepped forward to help restore one of the Keys’ most iconic species. Around the same time, Lisa also joined the Growing Hope board, helping guide the organization through difficult periods with steady leadership and devotion to its mission.

Monroe County Education Foundation

A longtime educator, business owner, and engaged community member, Peg Laron has been a strong champion for the Monroe County Education Foundation since joining the board in May 2019. During her four year term, she dedicated countless volunteer hours to supporting our mission, advocating for Take Stock in Children students, and uplifting the volunteer mentors who guide them. Peg has personally mentored four Take Stock scholars, investing in their academic success, personal growth, and future goals.

as a board member for Wesley House Family Services for fifteen years, and she and her husband, George, have been instrumental in creating and installing event decor for nearly all Wesley House events. Sandra is a dedicated volunteer whose commitment has been instrumental to our mission. This year alone, she has joined more than 30 cleanup trips, helping remove over 46,000 pounds of marine debris from Marathon, Boot Key, and surrounding mangrove islands, greatly improving the health and beauty of local ecosystems. Her support also extends beyond scheduled cleanups, as she regularly assists with bulk trash removal on Fridays to ensure debris is properly disposed of and operations run smoothly.

Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys ReStore

Jean and Sandra are what we proudly call our Habitat ReStore Angels, and their generosity has made a lasting difference for the Habitat Middle Keys ReStore. They have given countless hours of time, talent, and energy and were instrumental in helping open the store last year and

supporting its continued success. They have done everything from unloading trucks and building store fixtures to repairing furniture and organizing and beautifying the space into what it is today.

RIC AND CINDY MCCAUSLAND

Navy League of the United States Key West Council Ric and Cindy McCausland are the official Santa and Mrs Claus for more than four dozen holiday events each year, bringing joy to families across the community through Navy League activities, and many other local celebrations. In addition, Ric has served for nearly a decade as the chef of choice for Navy League supported change of command ceremonies, retirements, and special occasions such as Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps birthday balls, where his beautifully crafted cakes help make each event memorable.

Erin McKenna has supported Womankind for more than a decade, generously contributing her professional talents as emcee for BraZaar, Tats and Scars, and other signature fundraising events. Through her continued involvement, these efforts have helped generate more than seven hundred fifty thousand dollars to support breast health services throughout the Florida Keys. Erin brings enthusiasm, professionalism, and heartfelt commitment to every event, helping create meaningful experiences that connect the community to Womankind’s mission.

Shayne has worked almost single handedly to keep Hope Walk, a Relay for Life event, at the forefront of cancer awareness in Monroe County through ongoing fundraisers and the grand finale Hope Walk. She also spends countless hours listening to cancer patients and families and referring them to the American Cancer hotline when additional help is needed. Without her, American Cancer and Hope Walk would be only a phone based resource, but she keeps these efforts visible and active in the community.

The Florida Keys Children’s Shelter is honored to select Jill Miranda Baker as our 2026 Unsung Hero Honoree. We are deeply grateful for Jill’s advocacy and her work to showcase our services to at risk youth and families through her role as Business Development Officer for the Keys Weekly Best of the Upper Keys event, which raised more than $100,000 for FKCS from 2022 to 2025.

Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center

Deborah joined the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center as a volunteer in 2023, and quickly brought her impressive corporate retail experience to transforming the Gift Shop. Under Deborah’s leadership, gift

shop revenue has more than doubled. She tracks inventory and recruits, trains, and manages volunteers who staff the Sanctuary pop up shop. In 2025, she joined the Board of Directors, where she continues to be a strong and passionate advocate for the organization she so deeply believes in.

Keys AHEC Britt Myers, publisher of The Weekly and dedicated Keys AHEC Board Chair, is a true Unsung Hero for the children of the Florida Keys. Over many years of service, Britt has been more than a board leader, he has been a champion for children who rely on AHEC for care they might not otherwise receive. With genuine compassion and strong conviction, he helped secure critical resources that expanded access to medical and restorative dental care for our most vulnerable youth.

On behalf of employU, we honor Michael Napieraski, General Manager of the Courtyard by Marriott Key West Waterfront, for his quiet but powerful impact on our community. For the past year, Michael and his team have sponsored and hosted employU Summer and Winter Career Camps, providing a welcoming and professional environment where students with disabilities could learn, grow, and feel supported. Under his leadership, participants received full access to conference facilities, hospitality services, meals, and behind the scenes tours that introduced them to real career opportunities in the hotel industry.

She works closely with county partners, agencies, and residents so our community is represented in decisions that shape our future.

Miguel Ortero is one of the kindest people anyone will ever meet, and his compassion has made a lasting difference through his volunteer work with Keys to Be the Change over the past three years. A retired member of the United States Navy, Miguel brings dedication and generosity to everything he does. He not only mentors a student but has also embraced the entire family, providing back to school clothing and even beds so they have a safe and comfortable place to sleep.

the MLKCC to work on our Christmas program, and I had no idea that it would also bring us Loyda, the best Angel Volunteer anyone could ever hope for. She is a hard worker who takes pride in everything she does, organizes everything including me, and is always coming up with creative ideas that truly work. She loves packing gifts for approximately two thousand children in our county and makes sure to include a gift from each child’s wish list along with the four or five other gifts they receive.

has worked on the USCGC Ingham for over 3 years, and is an intricate and vital part of the crew. Mr. Reid is very knowledgeable and willing to take on large projects. He donates his time weekly to help preserve the history of the USCGC Ingham for generations to come.

Chris Rivett has served on FIRM’s Board of Directors since 2021, bringing extensive knowledge of mortgage lending in the Keys and helping guide FIRM’s efforts based on the real challenges he sees families facing in home ownership. Cari Sanders, Board Chair of our newly established Friends group, has been an instrumental force in moving our mission forward. The Turkey Hunt fundraiser, placed business sponsored yard sign turkeys throughout our parks during Thanksgiving week. Each morning, Cari shared playful riddles on social media with clues to each turkey’s location and recognition for sponsoring businesses. This imaginative effort raised critical funds for our annual insurance while inspiring families to explore and enjoy our parks together.

Robert is the volunteer conductor for the Keys Chamber Orchestra and has devoted many concert seasons to preparing musical arrangements, leading rehearsals and performances, and helping the group grow both musically and as a community. Robert brings patience, encouragement, and high standards to every rehearsal, creating an environment where learning and joy go hand in hand.

She does everything she can to ensure the success of the garden and is a dedicated volunteer in the propagation area, where she works quietly and with great care to help plants thrive. She is often one of the first to arrive on Monday mornings and regularly comes in during the week to water, tend to plantings, and restock the area where plants are offered for sale to visitors.

Ms. Shine has worked tirelessly over the past two years to ensure our community events have the sponsors, door prizes, and silent auction items needed for our organization to successfully provide scholarships to graduating seniors in Key West. Nell is an avid grower and collector of orchids whose passion and skills have made a meaningful impact on our organization. She has played an important role in the Million Orchid Project, using her architectural knowledge to help bring the new shade house to life and create a space where orchids can thrive. wherever help is needed, especially during the busy annual festival. Her willingness to serve and positive attitude make her a joy to work with.

History of Diving Museum

Diane is a Keys treasure with boundless creative energy whose knowledge of many art mediums and imaginative programs has inspired thousands of students throughout her career as an art teacher and department director. She serves as Co Chair of the Dive Into Art Featured Exhibit Show at the History of Diving Museum. For the past eight years, Diane has helped develop innovative programs that pair art with science, history, and eco friendly projects while organizing volunteers who contribute hundreds of hours working with students, teachers, and museum exhibits.

Key West United Methodist Church

Nick serves as Chair of both the Worship and Scholarship Committees and has held many other leadership roles, but much of what he does happens quietly behind the scenes without seeking thanks or recognition. He cooks, sets up, and cleans up for Old Stone Coffee House on Sunday mornings, our Wednesday night dinner and worship program, and nearly every other church event. He is often at the church early in the morning or late at night decorating, organizing, and preparing for programs.

Krystal never turns down an opportunity to help, and often volunteers before she is even asked. She is a strong mentor to new members and can always be counted on to complete any task assigned to her, whether large or small. Kenny has donated to many of our fundraisers over the years and has used his landscaping business to support MARC while helping spread the word about our Plant Store and Adult Day Training program. Friends of the Key West Library Literacy is important to Mary Ann, and she truly sees the library as the heart of the community, always reminding others that registering for a library card is free. For more than twenty years, Mary Ann has volunteered with the Friends of the Key West Library, faithfully supporting their mission to promote, improve, and strengthen the library. She has served six years on the Board of Directors, placed event notices in publications, and continues to be a dedicated cashier at used book sales.

Key West Community Sailing Center

Dave has been a dedicated volunteer and longtime supporter of the Key West Community Sailing Center, serving for several years on the Board of Directors as Membership Chair. During his time on the board, he helped grow membership through stronger engagement, improved tracking, and better organization, while also reviving social potlucks and representing the Center at Walk on White and other community events. Dave continues to be an active volunteer who is always willing to help wherever needed.

Miles began volunteering at the old Shelter in 2006, washing litter boxes and quickly noticing areas in need of repair. He soon began helping with maintenance and in 2008 was asked to serve on the FKSPCA Board, but after one year he chose to return to hands on work where he felt he could make the greatest difference. His wide range of skills and quiet dedication make him an essential part of caring for the animals and supporting daily operations.

He now dedicates hours each week to instructing self defense and martial arts classes for young people in the community. Sergeant Williams is known for his kind heart, strong commitment, and willingness to consistently show up for the children who depend on these programs.

WILSON Business Professional Women (BPW) Marathon Joy is the current Treasurer and a past President of the Marathon BPW organization, and she continues to be one of the most dependable and giving members of our club. Joy volunteers at every event, from Sip and Shop to Keysino Night, always ready to help wherever she is needed. With her gentle demeanor, she inspires others, builds morale, and helps keep the club strong year after year. Her steady leadership and generous spirit make a lasting difference for our organization.

Marathon Yacht Club Educational Foundation

Joanne has generously donated her professional services to MYCEF and Middle Keys Sailing by preparing tax returns, maintaining financial records, processing payroll for summer coaches, paying payroll taxes, and managing workers compensation insurance. In addition, Joanne serves as Treasurer and as a member of the Board of Directors, regularly attending meetings and supporting the organization in every way she can. Her volunteer service is invaluable because the program could not afford the cost of these essential services.
