HURDLES AHEAD FOR FOUNDERS PARK BALL FIELD IMPROVEMENTS JIM McCARTHY jim@keysweekly.com

S

ubstantial upgrades could be on the way to a field that’s home to Coral Shores Hurricanes baseball, if officials with the school district and Islamorada agree on the proposed improvements.

Located at the front of Founders Park, the baseball field was constructed under a 2001 agreement between the school district and village. Under the pact, the school district is responsible for expenses associated with field improvements. In the past, the district has paid for field replacements and new perimeter fencing, among other improvements.

At a recent school board meeting, members voted 4-1 to award a request for qualifications for the design and construction of upgrades at Founders Park baseball field to Chris-Tel Construction. The board gave its support by adding that the item was contingent on the village council’s approval.

Pat Lefere, operations and planning director for the district, told the school board before the vote that it’s the first step in a lengthy process with significant review expected from the district and village on the specific enhancements.

Per the RFQ, the school board allocated $5 million for renovations, from artificial turf to replace the grass to new bleachers, backstop, fences, protective netting and dugouts. A new building for a concession stand, locker rooms, press box and bathrooms was also detailed. Lefere said the district began discussions with the village over ball field improvements two years ago.

“We’ve had multiple back-andforths with village staff on this scope of work that got included in the RFQ that went out and came back,” he said.

Lefere said the school district will engage with the village to make a plan for improvements. Islamorada village

council members must approve the project’s scope before any upgrades proceed.

“There’s still obviously work to be done with the village to make sure they’re satisfied with the scope of work and our process moving forward,” Lefere told school board members. “If we could get to that point, we still have at least four hurdles to get over, all of which come to the school board, then to the village, for approval.”

The field serves as year-round baseball training for a relatively new Steady Bats clinic for players from youth to high school. It’s led by high school coaches Joe Molinaro and Doug Mientkiewicz. In addition, the Hurricanes baseball team plays 10 to 12 games each spring season. The athletics facility has also hosted the village Parks and Recreation Department’s fall adult kickball league, area softball leagues and youth sports.

icky Laak’s mother Ann was first diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment in 2015. Soon after came the devastating news: Ann had Alzheimer’s disease. Today, 81-year old Ann lives at Oasis at the Keys Nursing and Rehab in Tavernier.

“After about four years of caring for her at home, it just got to be too much,” recalled Laak. “You needed two people to care for her a lot of the time.

It was 24 hours a day,” said Laak, a Key Largo resident and middle school teacher.

Helen Williams can relate to that experience. Her mother, Mary Pimental, was about 80 years old when the family started noticing changes.

“It starts with the difficulty in remembering, the difficulty in everyday tasks,” said Williams. Williams’ mother was also diagnosed with a form of Alzheimer’s.

At first, Williams, with the help of caregivers, looked after her mother at home. But in 2020, her mother fell and required more assistance. Now 86, Mary Pimental also lives at Oasis.

“It’s hard. It is difficult. You really need a lot of support,” said Williams of the decision to move her mom into the skilled nursing facility. “It comes to a point where you just know that you can’t do it yourself any more. You can’t leave them alone for one minute and you have to make a choice of what is better for them.”

It’s a difficult and heart-wrenching decision to place a loved one in a care facility. Alzheimer’s and other forms of

dementia not only affect the person suffering from the devastating disease, but also take a tremendous emotional and physical toll on the caregivers.

“It’s like a slow loss, really; you’re losing the person that you love,” said Laak. “I mean, they’re still that person, but they can’t really communicate with you.”

On Sunday, Dec. 10, the Keys community will help raise money for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest fundraiser for the disease. Some 600 walks take place across the country every year. Now the Upper Keys will be added to the long list of communities taking part in this effort to stop Alzheimer’s. For the first time, a Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held locally at Founders Park in Islamorada.

Kara Biery is the event chair. Biery, the admissions and marketing director at Oasis, was instrumental in bringing the walk to the Upper Keys.

“I made a call to the Alzheimer’s Association informing them that Oasis at the Keys Nursing and Rehab would like to hold a small event,” explained Biery. “We quickly identified community members and business sponsors who wanted to participate. The event has evolved into the first Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the Florida Keys, with the vision that it will be held annually and continue to grow.”

know that dementia/Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease for the families and I do know that Oasis is a wonderful place and does their best considering all of the resources down here in the Keys to make my mother feel like part of a family down there,” said Williams.

Laak says her mother’s caregivers at Oasis have become family.

“I spend a lot of time at the nursing home. That’s like my alternative family there,” said Laak.

Sally Sullivan’s 85-year-old mother Joan suffers from dementia and also lives at Oasis. Sullivan is grateful for her mother’s caregivers.

“They are outstanding over there.

They take fantastic care of my mom,” said Sullivan.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease.

With an aging population, that number

is expected to jump to 13 million by the year 2050.

Biery believes fundraising events like the Walk to End Alzheimer’s are making a difference.

“Funds raised go toward helping advance our understanding of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, identify possible treatments and improve support for people affected by this disease.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s brings the community together to raise awareness and advocate for progress in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease,” Biery said.

Tom McDonald was visiting family out of state when he was involved in a tragic bike accident on Nov. 3. The CPA was 77 years old. He represented Key Largo on the mosquito control board from 1995 to 1998.

McDonald was reelected to the seat in 2015 and had served on the board ever since for District 5. He recently served as treasurer and secretary.

NOAA EXTENDS TEMPORARY SPECIAL USE AREA FOR CORAL NURSERIES

A

34-year-old Hialeah man was arrested Nov. 24 for multiple lobster-related and other wildlife viola-

tions.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Key Largo Deputy Jason Farr and a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer were patrolling near Card Sound Bridge at 3:52 p.m. when they saw multiple people spearfishing. They saw fishing gear and lobsters thrown into the water from the vessel as they approached.

Alejandro Garcia Azcuy was charged with several misdemean-

ors, including spearfishing in a prohibited area, harvesting lobster from a sanctuary, spearing lobster, possessing no lobster gauge, possession of grouper out-of-season, interference with a law enforcement officer, and multiple boating citations.

Arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 6 before Judge Sharon Hamilton at the Plantation Key Courthouse.

A special use area five miles southeast of Tavernier is closed for use until at least Jan. 5, 2024 except for continuous transit as it continues to house temporary coral nurseries. NKNMS/Contributed

A

coral nursery in federal waters about five miles southeast of Tavernier will retain special use protections for an additional 60 days after NOAA exercised its emergency authority to extend a temporary rule, which prohibits all entry except for continuous transit without interruption. The emergency provision, which had not been used by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) in 20 years, was established in September for a 0.07-square-mile area during a summer heat wave that caused restoration partner Reef Renewal to move corals to a temporary nursery in deeper, cooler water.

“It was a Herculean effort to move thousands of coral fragments to this temporary location for safe keeping,” said Sarah Fangman, FKNMS superintendent, “and this extension will provide our partner ample time to return them to their original, permitted location.”

eys Capt. Kieran “Kiki” Ferrer was diagnosed with stage 3 inoperable pancreatic cancer on Oct. 27. Now, the local community is coming together to put on a benefit as Ferrer continues the fight.

Kiki is the husband to Stephanie Ferrer, whom he met on Isla Mujeres when she left her purse after an evening out with friends. He returned her purse and they have been together ever since. They have two young children, Kaven and Kai. When he gets a day off from charter fishing, Ferrer enjoys spending time with his family, lobstering, crabbing and hunting. Kiki has started his journey to fight this cancer with chemotherapy, and his friends and family have joined this fight with him.

A benefit for Ferrer is set for Wednesday, Dec.13 from 4 to 7 p.m., at World Wide Sportsman & Islamorada Fish Company, which have donated the space. A team of chefs will be preparing pulled pork, a whole pig and BBQ chicken with southern sides and beverages by the Florida Keys Brewing Co. The event will also have music by DJ Dave, a silent auction, raffle prizes and more. To attend, a $30 per person donation will be payable at the door or by visiting “Let’s help Capt Kiki Catch His Cure” on Facebook to buy tickets in advance.

Bike ride could slow traffic Some 50 bikers will take part in the earthbiking.org Key West Ride from Homestead to the southernmost city on Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the riders will not be riding in a pack but will be spread out the length of the route.

The first riders will begin leaving Homestead in the early morning hours of Friday, Dec. 1. They will enter Monroe County via the 18-Mile Stretch. Riders will stop at Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott in Marathon later that evening. The ride will resume the morning of Dec. 2 en route to Stock Island. Bicyclists will ride as a group from Stock Island into Key West en route to Dante’s Key West Pool Bar & Restaurant.

Though traffic is not expected to be impeded on U.S. 1 for this event, motorists should expect slow traffic in spots and plan accordingly.

Sanctuary Advisory Council meeting scheduled Dec. 12 Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council will meet at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12, in Marathon. The council will welcome new members and hear updates from Mission: Iconic Reefs and the FKNMS maritime heritage program.

The council will also consider a draft resolution brought to the table by its South Florida Ecosystem Connectivity Team working group.

Public meeting set on Card Sound bridge work Monroe County will hold a public information meeting for two upcoming bridge replacement projects on Card Sound Road — Tubby’s Creek Bridge and Mosquito Creek Bridge.

The meeting will be held at the Murray Nelson Government Center Board of County Commissioners’ conference room on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. County and design consultant engineers will attend to inform the residents about the upcoming project and answer questions.

Thanksgiving gas prices at 3-year low Florida gas prices inched lower last week, even as millions of Americans hit the road for Thanksgiving.

AAA forecasted nearly 2.8 million Floridians would take a road trip for the holiday weekend. While this year’s actual traveler totals will not be released until next year’s holiday report, Thanksgiving gas prices were officially the lowest in three years.

The average price at the pump on Thanksgiving day was $3.03 per gallon in Florida. Last year, Thanksgiving travelers paid $3.41 per gallon. The price was $3.35 a gallon in 2021 and $2.03 a gallon during Thanksgiving in 2020.

“A recent drop in oil prices and the seasonal downturn in fuel demand have enabled gas prices to move lower in time for the holidays,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. “Gas prices should remain low through the holidays, unless there’s an unexpected spike in oil prices or disruption to the domestic gasoline supply line.”

iao Bella Salon & Day Spa cofounder and co-owner Bella Morina gave amazing hugs.

Clients said that when they walked in, she would make people feel instantly at home.

In her bright, plant- and mirrorfilled spa, she would squeal excitedly, take patrons into her arms and say, “Hey, how are you doing?”

No matter what kind of day she was having, she made her clients feel like they were the center of her world.

And then, if she sensed they needed a longer talk — say, a bride anxious about wedding plans — she would invite them to sneak outside with her and sit for a spell on the back porch.

“Don’t worry, by the next wedding, we will get it right,” Morina would say with a wink, and the bride would laugh.

Her strength, kindness and humor seemed to know no bounds — which explains the shock flooding the comments on the spa’s Facebook post announcing Morina’s unexpected passing, at age 48 on Nov. 7, of breast cancer.

“This is heartbreaking,” said one mourner. “Bella was one of the kindest people I have had the pleasure of knowing.”

She shared an uncommon bond with her sister, Gilda Rroshi. As fam-

ily friend Olta Andoni said at the Nov. 19 funeral service for Morina at First Baptist Church, the two women came as a package.

“You get one friend, you get another amazing friend,” Andoni said.

Together, the striking duo — Morina with raven hair, and Rroshi with a headful of red curls — immigrated to the U.S. from Albania, raised their children, co-founded Ciao Bella and created a successful business over 19 years.

Morina was a fighter. Rroshi described to Keys Weekly a childhood with hard knocks behind the Iron Curtain in Albania. But they never felt like victims. A saving grace was their grandmother, who was a naturopathic midwife and, by lovingly sharing her self-care remedies, inspired their careers as licensed estheticians.

“We’ve always been able to see the light,” she said. “Whenever we fell on our faces, we would get back up.”

Seeking safety after the Albanian civil war, the women came to the U.S. in their 20s. They eventually settled in the Keys and juggled caring for family, nursing studies and their jobs. Morina worked at Paul Joseph Salon, located where Ciao Bella is now.

As was her way, Morina hit it off with her bosses, who trusted her with many aspects of their salon. In 2004,

they confided that they were selling their business. Would she want to buy it?

“Bella called me and said, ‘We should do this,’” recalled Rroshi.

The sisters stopped their nursing classes and made the jump.

“We bought the business first, then the building, and everything changed,” said Rroshi, who was sitting on a couch in the spa area. The lighting was comfortingly low and the classical music was soothing; a selection of teas were set out for clients. In the apothecary room, tables displayed essential oils, candles, soaps, creams and perfumes next to crystal-laden candelabras.

“We expanded and created an institution of curated self-care and wellness, as a portal to self-love,” she said.

Customers responded to the spa’s cozy elegance. Over time, Morina’s daughter, Dea, and husband, Richie, joined the team to help run Ciao Bella.

Morina also leaves behind her parents, Didi and Bill; her son, Aleks; her daughter Dea’s son, Jaxson; nephews Henri, Jonathon and K.C.; nieces Skyla, Eris and Cindy; her brother, Ermal Nallbani, and sister-in-law Isida; sister Ina Nallbani; and Rroshi’s fiance, Michael Reckwerdt.

Morina was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of the pandemic. Seeing her indomitable spirit, the family

never considered that she would lose her battle to the disease. She chose to work throughout treatment and, despite being at stage 4, was never bitter.

“She would say, ‘I don’t feel unprivileged, because I have the privilege to fight,’” Rroshi said.

In her ICU hospital bed during her final days, rather than focus on her own pain, she wanted to comfort her sister.

“She said to me, in our mother tongue, ‘I am calm. I am okay,’” said Rroshi, with emotion. “She was letting me know that she had no worries and her love is here to stay. This was something she practiced every day. Her vibration was so high — people resonated and felt uplifted. Bella was my person. I will never have enough time to talk about how much I love her.”

The day before Morina passed, she was unable to speak and gestured toward her phone. The family watched as she summoned her strength to hold it and type. Her note said: “I love you all.”

At the memorial service, her daughter made a declaration from behind a microphone.

“I am Bella Dea Morina,” she said, firmly. The church sanctuary was quiet and mourners wiped their tears. “I will carry on her legacy with all the strength and grace she gave me. I am my mother’s daughter.”

erhaps former Upper Keys Sailing Club Commodore Pat McLaughlin said it best: “This place is family, it’s tradition, it’s important.”

On Nov. 18, the Upper Keys Sailing Club capped off a year of 50th anniversary celebrations with a moving tribute to all past commodores.

Among those honored: 94-yearold Bob Sandifer. Sandifer served as commodore from 1990 to 1991; his late wife, artist Cris Sandifer, held the leadership position from 1994 to 1995. Sandifer attended the ceremony with his son, Steven and grandson, Ted. “It meant the world for him to be able to tell everybody what an honor it was for him to be a part of this club and how the greatest joy in his life came from being in this club,” Steven Sandifer said.

Islamorada resident and pastor Marlin Simon took the helm of the sailing club back in 1975 as its third commodore. Simon was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the club to become what it is today.

During the ceremony, Simon delighted current club members with colorful stories of the early — ­ and sometimes insanely competitive —

days on the water.

“We had a best sailor award,” reminisced Simon. “You take any kind of five boats, I don’t care whose they are or what they are and you race them five different times with the crew changing boats each time. And then you would find out who could handle any of the boats.”

That competitive vibe continues today, with a series of regattas taking place throughout the year.

“I like Marlin’s idea about getting out there and racing different types of boats; at least one of those boats has got to be a Force 5,” added former commodore Tom Trump.

Key Largo resident Alan Hulbert was commodore in 1998. He is most proud of the work he and his board took to throw a lifeline to the club’s youth sailing program.

“One of the things that I’m most proud of is the youth sailing program.

It sort of drifted away when I was commodore and I made a strong effort to bring it back,” said Hulbert.

Former commodore Mike Austin acknowledged the pivotal role the youngest members will play in defining the club’s future and longevity.

During the event, young UKSC sailors presented a yellow rose to each of the former commodores in attendance and current commodore Dewey Jackson. Family members of deceased past commodores were also presented with yellow roses. All were awarded a plaque that read, “Thank you for getting us where we are today.” It was a touching tribute to the many families that have shaped the course of the Upper Keys Sailing Club.

The club, founded in 1973 with a handful of sailing enthusiasts and their families, now boasts almost 300 members.

“We’re all sailors; we all love the water,” said former commodore Ginette Hughes, who served a total of three years at the helm. “All I can say is thank you and obviously I’m a glutton for punishment if I came back.”

2006, joked that his time at the club and on the water has not always been smooth sailing.

“I know I’ve had the maximum number of tows to get the boat back to the club,” he said with a laugh.

Like so many, former commodore Betsy Edwards developed a love for the water and sailing at a young age.

“I’ve been sailing since I was 14 or 15. I started out on a sunfish at Key Biscayne Yacht Club and moved up to bigger things when the knees gave out,” Edwards said.

All of the former commodores acknowledged that running a club with so many moving parts takes a team effort. “The commodores don’t do anything by themselves,” said Sara Kahler. “They only do it with the help of their board. I was lucky to have a very good board both times I was commodore. It’s been so much fun.”

Current commodore Dewey Jackson closed out the ceremony with a nod to the future generation.

“I treasure each and every one here. I want this place to be alive, viable and much like it is, when these kids’ kids are here,” Jackson said.

Presented by the Key Largo Sunset Rotary Club, the evening will culminate with a fireworks display sponsored by Plantation Boat Mart in Tavernier.

Boats can enter the lighted parade for free, and a total of $2,500 in cash and prizes are on the line in various categories for small and large vessels. Boats will vie for Most Colorful, Most Original, Best Use of Theme, Best Business, Best Boat Under 25 Feet and Best Boat Over 25 Feet.

“This year’s theme allows boat parade participants the ability to be creative with traditions around the world through decorations, costumes and music,” said Lisa Feliciano, Key Largo Sunset Rotary president and organizer of the Key Largo Boat Parade. “Plenty of prizes and gifts are available for those who enter their boats.”

With assistance from Sea Tow, boats will line up near Dusenbury Creek Green Marker 41 around 6:30 p.m. in anticipation of a 7:30 p.m.

Following the parade, fireworks will light the skies of Blackwater Sound. The fireworks display is sponsored by Plantation Boat Mart and Dennis De La Torre, owner. Located in Tavernier, Plantation Boat Mart has been a part of the community for 36 years. De La Torre bought the business in 1996.

“We want to bring the community together for this event,” said son Ryan De La Torre. “I’ve always loved this event growing up and seeing a great fireworks display.”

or pet owners and caretakers, it’s more than just a “fun job playing with dogs.”

It’s a job that doesn’t have an end time, like a 9-to-5 workday, as you are always thinking or worrying about them. Pet owners can understand the importance of making sure they are in good care, and so does Nelly Rivera, owner of the new pet destination Zoomies in Key Largo.

“I am originally from Daytona Beach and went to school a little bit for marine biology and then started as an intern at Theater of the Sea (TOTS). I got most of my knowledge and experience through that experience — they have a really good program,” Rivera said.

Many people have a side job in that field, especially in the Keys where the cost of living is high.

Rivera started in 2017 on Rover.com doing dog walks, and it grew from there.

“It was time to expand and I found the space working with a Realtor. Initially, I wasn’t having much luck. However, at the last minute, I found this place. We opened in October,” she said.

The property at MM 102 in Key Largo was meant for Zoomies, with a large fenced-in yard, let alone the indoor downstairs space that includes a training room. The upstairs, which is for boarding, has an open view to the center of the downstairs play area.

“My contractor, Mark Kruger, has been a great help. And I could not have done this without the help of my sister, Sheyla Rivera,” Rivera said. “The boarding suites are upstairs, and there will be about 25 kennels. There will be different-sized kennels, and I am also building a cat corner downstairs.”

Zoomies also offers boarding training or day care training. “Maui (one of the dogs) just did a board and train and is back for a day to play,” Rivera said.

The day play cost is $35 per day with packages available; the hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Training is priced separately: Rivera assesses the dog and what makes sense, as “all dogs are different.” The training teaches commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “lie down” and “go to place,” as well as other basic obedience, socializing skills and confidence building.

“Most people bring their dogs during the week while they are at work. To get their energy out — the bigger dogs get enrichment. All the dogs here today are regulars,” Rivera said.

Do the dogs tend to get along? Rivera said, “yes.”

“I’ve only had a challenge once, and it was because the dog played too hard and needed more training, which at the time, I couldn’t do,” Rivera said. “I do an evaluation process. If the dogs don’t get along or need a time-out, I can separate them. Fifteen years at TOTS mostly prepared me to be able to read behavior. I feel that’s the reason I don’t have any issues with the dogs because I can read them and then do prevention measures before anything happens.

“I don’t typically take them on a walk because of the risk of them slipping out of their collar,” she continued. “But if a dog needs to take a walk to poop, I review the risk with the owner.”

Rivera is also knowledgeable and knows how to give insulin if your dog is diabetic. Zoomies also has a friend in Banshee, the cute black kitten.

“I found her on the other side of the fence as I heard her crying for two days. She was about 3 to 4 weeks old. So, I asked the neighboring property owner if I could come over, and there she was,” Rivera said. “Banshee loves dogs. Riley, for example (one of the big dogs), loves playing with her. They are not rough; they are all very gentle with her. I watch to see how they look at her through the fence first.”

Rivera said she can see Banshee and dogs bonding and forming friendships.

“When people board their dogs, I will send home report cards and put who their best friend was during their stay,”she said.

The boarding cost is $50 per night for one dog, and then if there is another dog in the same family, it’s an additional $30 per dog per night.

Zoomies can take about 30 dogs at a time. Rivera also can take cats and is open to discussion about some other types of pets that are caged.

Events season in the Florida Keys has arrived, including an upcoming run. Saturday, Dec. 2, is the First State Bank Key Largo Bridge Run. The 5k will run over the beautiful Jewfish Creek Bridge overlooking the Key Largo Bay and finish at the access road to Gilbert’s Resort. Run or walk our bridge on the 18-Mile Stretch, which serves as the gateway into the Florida Keys. It’s an awesome course, flat and fast with one big challenging bridge, Jewfish Creek Bridge, and gorgeous views of the Florida Bay and Barnes Sound.

The race is a timed 5k run and

walk. Race T-shirts will be given to the first 500 participants to register. All participants will receive a medal upon completion of their respective race event. Awards will be presented to the overall top three finishers, overall masters and top three of different age groups. Racers will reunite with family and friends at Gilbert’s Resort access road while enjoying snacks, refreshments and music. Register for the race at keylargobridgerun.com.

I have a fun little side story about this race that some may have missed.

My friend, and my mom’s tattoo artist, Brandon Bennett, designed the ribbon for the medals that will be handed out at the Bridge Run this year. My mom has been getting tattooed by Bennett since he first opened South of Heaven Tattoo in 2009. I even got to meet the whole South of Heaven tattoo crew when I arrived in Key Largo in May 2021. I had the chance to see the ribbon design online and it is quite amazing. It’s a true representation of supporting locals while showcasing the ecosystem in one of the biggest events of the year in the Upper Keys.

Martin Meylach, a treasure hunter who also worked for the souvenir trade, wrote in his book, “Diving to a Flash of Gold,” “At Looe Key, we dropped anchor over a forest of staghorn coral. Below, the trees looked upward from the reef in clumps, each tree a full five feet across. The things were unbelievably fragile, their petals ready to crack like eggshells. It was a job of brute strength to steady each tree and chip it free at the base with a chisel-pointed crowbar.”

Fortunately for the local waters, the government stepped in and began to make efforts to bolster the health and safety of the Florida Reef. In 1975,

the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary was established, followed by the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary in 1981. A significantly wider net of protection was cast with the designation of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary on Nov. 16, 1990.

Today, sanctuary boundaries cover 2,900 square nautical miles, stretching from the Biscayne National Park boundary to the Dry Tortugas, some 70 miles southwest of the Conch Republic’s southernmost city.

Where once upon a time, men like Art McKee – considered the father of modern treasure hunting – paid the state $100 a year to hold claim over a wreck site, it was no longer possible to legally search the Atlantic shallows, spot a promising site, drop anchor and dig on a suspected shipwreck. For treasure hunters and those working in the souvenir trade, the designation of the sanctuary effectively drew a line in the sand.

The policy change has remained a point of contention between treasure hunters and those charged with protecting natural and cultural resources.

The sanctuary did not outlaw the work of salvors in Florida Keys waters.

Rather, they required the salvors to apply for permits issued by sanctuary officials.

Salvors can apply for two kinds of permits; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the state of Florida review both.

The first, a survey and inventory permit, allows non-intrusive surveys to search for or document a site.

The second kind of permit, a research and recovery permit, is considered after all the necessary surveys, inventories and required reports are submitted to the sanctuary and reviewed. Still, even after each of the sanctuary’s conditions have been met to qualify for the more intrusive research and recovery permit, there is no guarantee the application will be granted.

And this is where the piracy comes into play. Some people out in

the sanctuary waters have foregone the permit process and are actively hunting treasure — whether that treasure is of a historical nature or one of silver and gold is a moot point. While I was still working as a curator for a local museum, people would offer artifacts they had found while diving out at the reefs, hoping they could be displayed. Some of them are on display — even two Spanish reales, a unit of currency. However, unless those artifacts had been recovered prior to the establishment of the sanctuary, I was not going to display them publicly.

This week, next week and every week, when the weather cooperates, people will be out on the reef looking for shipwrecks and the histories and mysteries they may contain. Those doing the hunting, and sometimes the spoils that have been recovered, are not infrequently shared on social media, which, in my opinion, is tantamount to flying a pirate flag.

As someone who loves these local histories, the harm is that when these artifacts are brought to the surface and pirated away, they become lost (in best-case scenarios) to private collections where only a select few

can appreciate them. In worst-case scenarios, the artifacts are not documented, lose their provenance, are not properly stored and cared for and become lost, damaged or ruined.

Searching through suspected shipwreck sites and removing artifacts also alters ecosystems that have developed, in some cases, over hundreds of years. Like everything, the subject is certainly nuanced, and working at the museum for eight years, I listened to arguments from both sides. Also, the sanctuary is a massive area and about as difficult to police as lobster poachers taking way beyond their limit during the lobster mini-season — which is not an invitation for people to go out on the water and act like pirates or to ignore the bag limits on lobster.

Like it or not, working the reef line for sunken ships is not what it was back in the silver-golden years when Art McKee rediscovered the 1733 fleet. While it might have been a bit of a Wild West situation back in the day, and the crews of competing treasure hunters occasionally drew pistols and other armaments on each other, at least it is (hopefully) less so today.

or those seeking cuteness overload, seeing kiddos dressed as mini elves should do the trick. Students of Key Largo School Drama Club are preparing to perform “Elf Jr.; The Musical,” starting Friday, Dec. 1 at the Coral Shores High School Performing Arts Center.

“This. Is. Too. Cute,” said director Michele Zofchak, showing us her phone. It displayed a photo of children in Santa hats and red tights posed in front of a giant pile of presents. (We checked: Zofchak was making the “Awww” face.)

The KLS ESOL teacher is used to this scenario.

She has been directing plays in the Keys for 20 years.

“Theater brings out something in kids that they need,” she said. “It gives them a place to feel safe and discover who they really are. Imagine being 8 years old and looking at an audience of 500.

It builds confidence.”

Zofchak was thrilled that local photographer, Javier Exposito, who was in a play for her when he was 3-years-old, has come full circle as a volun-

teer. That night, he helped install the large backdrops as his wife, Amanda, watched on the side, holding their baby son.

“It’s great to work with students who would never have been exposed to music and dance if not for this,” said “Elf Jr.” choreographer and KLS music and movement teacher Kelly Shaw. She noted that other Monroe County schools don’t have drama programs. Key Largo School Drama Club accepts Plantation Key School and charter school students as well as homeschoolers.

“We’re trying to develop a performing arts magnet school in Monroe County,” Shaw said.

“Elf Jr.: The Musical” is based on the 2003 Christmas classic starring Will Ferrell. He plays an elf named Buddy who, due to his tall size and clumsiness at making toys, realizes that he is human. He goes to New York City to find his birth father — then hilarity and a small romance ensues.

Tall 13-year-old James Blanco is perfectly cast as Buddy and is in every scene of the production.

“He’s done a fantastic job,” Zofchak said proudly. “He’s become a leader.”

“It’s really fun,” Blanco said enthusiastically about acting in plays. “You get to meet new people every time you do it. And I’m looking forward to all

the people coming to see us. My grandparents are coming in from Central Florida.”

Kaylie Sabater, also age 13, plays Buddy’s love interest, Jovie.

“I like the fun interactions with the characters. But then, it gets awkward with acting the romance stuff,” she said, laughing. “And you have to remember it’s just a play.”

A Nov. 28 rehearsal ended, of course, in a Rockettes-style kickline with all the cast members.

Then some of the children tried on elf costumes and posed for their parents. The moms gathered in front of the stage, excitedly taking pictures.

“Cute!” they all exclaimed while they snapped photos with their phones.

“Elf Jr.: The Musical” will be presented at Coral Shores High School Performing Arts Center in Tavernier on Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 1, 2, 8 and 9 at 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Dec. 3 and 10, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 presale and $10 at the door.

For an hour and a half before every performance, families can take photos with Santa in the lobby, for between $10 to $20 a session.

onroe County Fire Rescue and Monroe County Parks and Beaches invite the public to take a picture with Santa – with your camera or cell phone – and meet local firefighters on Saturday, Dec. 9, from noon to 2 p.m. at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier.

The first 100 children will receive a Frisbee, and there will be candy canes and fire truck tours in addition to meeting with the “big guy” himself.

“Harry Harris Park got hit pretty bad by this past storm, but we are excited to get the park back to its glory and have Santa visit the fabulous Florida Keys for all of the local children to enjoy,” said John Allen, Monroe County Parks and Beaches director. “We look forward to seeing you then.”

A

local school’s gift drive is seeking help from the community as the holiday season kicks into full gear.

Plantation Key School’s Project Santa celebrates the winter holiday traditions and cultures and sets out on a mission to provide gifts to students. It’s a collaboration among teachers and staff, administrators, parents, community members, local businesses, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and local foundations. Each year, dozens of volunteers gather to bring Project Santa to life.

Last year, 125 students were served in the Keys community through Project Santa. Those wishing to help this season have three

options. Helpers can adopt a student or family of the student (wishlists for the students are provided). Gift card donations from Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, CVS, Walgreens and Amazon are also accepted, or people can donate a gift. Art supplies, sports equipment, Legos, dolls and remote control cars and board games are among the popular gift items.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 Former school board member Capt. Ed Davidson raised several issues with the project, of which one included the use of artificial turf. Davidson cited potential injuries in going with turf, as well as environmental hazards.

“Many soccer teams are refusing to play on artificial turf due to injury rates,” he said.

Davidson added the project shouldn’t result in the cutting of the park’s hammock trees. He noted the bidder’s initial rendition of the project showed around 30 trees missing.

Rich Russell, the former Coral Shores athletic director who now oversees the sports facilities, said artificial turf means less maintenance compared to grass. He said some 65,350 gallons of water would be saved a week, and no herbicides and pesticides would be needed. Russell also said the artificial turf will allow for other sports activities like soccer and lacrosse.

School board member John Dick said the project should proceed with artificial turf since the “sports people request and want it.” He voted “no” on the RFQ award, however, after

viewing a recent Islamorada council meeting and hearing a statement that it looked like the project was a “backdoor deal between the school board and previous village manager.”

“We enjoy community support for this school board from Key West to Key Largo, and we always have and we need to continue with that,” he said. “If there’s a perception this wasn’t done correctly … we are in a position where we have to make sure the public is onboard with us on everything we do.”

Mindy Conn, school board member from the Lower Keys, said it’s an approval to move forward with the company in Chris-Tel, not an official rendering or the building of field improvements. Conn said it’s important Coral Shores feels pride in its fields, like sports programs in Key West and Marathon do.

Sue Woltanski, new school board chair, said she expects the community will approve of the project with full communication and bringing expectations back to what the park should look like with a safe field, new bleachers and high school sports amenities.

until we move forward and present what our real plan is. Things have been complicated because there’s been multiple village managers,” she said. “We need to put the genie back in the bottle and bring what the actual plan is.

“I don’t think anyone wants a minor league baseball field at Founders Park, but we want a place where our boys and others can have a good athletic experience,” she continued.

o the delight of distance runners and winter visitors who relish the Florida Keys’ mild temperatures, Islamorada Running Co.’s annual half marathon, 10k, Rumrunner 5k and Beach ’n’ Beer Mile race series is set for Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 9-10.

All races this year start and end at La Siesta Resort & Villas, MM 80.2 oceanside.

The Rumrunner 5k kicks off the race weekend with an 8 a.m. Saturday start that takes runners across the Tea Table Channel Bridge with a turnaround on Indian Key Fill. Participants will be rewarded with a rumrunner cocktail after the race, along with a finisher medal and hat.

At noon Saturday, the Beach ’n’ Beer Mile provides “athletes” a onemile, non-timed stroll that combines jogging or walking with four beers per participant.

Sunday’s half marathon and 10k

both start at 7 a.m. The scenic course, typically featuring a stunning sunrise, takes participants south across Tea Table Channel Bridge. Runners in the 10k turn around just past Robbie’s of Islamorada, while half-marathon participants turn around just before the Channel 2 Bridge.

Runners in the half marathon and 10k will receive a finisher medal, hat, T-shirt and two free beers from Florida Keys Brewing Co. Awards await the top three finishers in all races, as do age-group awards for the 5k, 10k and half marathon.

Some registration spaces remain for runners of all ages and skill levels, whether they’re bucket-list runners or newbies. Online race fees are $115 per person for the half marathon, $80 for the 10k, $60 for the 5k and $50 for the Beach ’n’ Beer Mile.

SCHOOL DISTRICT GETS NEW FINANCE DIRECTOR

uperintendent Theresa Axford recently announced that Charlene White was selected to become the Monroe County School District’s executive director of finance and performance.

She holds a doctorate of higher education and adult education leadership, a master’s degree in accountancy and a cum laude bachelor’s in business administration and accounting from the University of Tennessee.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Charlene White join our team,” Axford said. “Her experience and positive energy will enhance our finance, MIS and risk management departments greatly so that they continue the superior work which they are doing at this time.”

At Dyersburg State Community College in Dyersburg, Tennessee, White served eight years as the finance manager and then five years as the vice president for finance and administrative services. As vice president, she carried out business and financial operations along with coordinating budgets and treasurer functions of the many institutional departments, boards, committees and plan development at the college.

Her work experience includes principal consultant with Banner Finance, senior accountant at Sara Lee Food and Beverage and other accounting, consulting, directing and owner/operating positions.

Her assignment of vice president of finance and administrative services at the College of The Florida Keys helped her realize that Key West is the destination she would like to continue her career. She was introduced at the recent MCSD board meeting and will begin her new role on Jan. 8, 2024.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS $500K 49 LOCAL NONPROFITS GET SUPPORT FOR PROJECTS & PROGRAMS

T

he Community Foundation of the Florida Keys is awarding $500,800 in grants to 49 Keys nonprofits for projects in all areas of the Keys that will directly benefit residents, communities and the environment.

“The need is greater than ever as we received 113 applications this year, compared to 57 last year,” said Jennifer McComb, president and CEO of the foundation.

Ten community members – representing Key West, the Lower Keys, the Middle Keys and Upper Keys – reviewed and scored the funding applications.

When McComb first oversaw the process in 2020, she said, the foundation granted $144,500 to 27 organizations. The dollars awarded this year are 63% higher than the $307,750 granted to 48 Keys nonprofits in 2022 and more than twice as much as the $215,266 granted to 35 organizations in 2021.

The foundation grants over $2 million a year, but most of the funding is earmarked for specific nonprofits, per the wishes of individual donors.

Grants committee chair Marian Buccafurni said the reviewers scored programs for basic needs like food, housing, childcare and health care highest, as well as projects that would help a large number of residents or be one-time fixes for serious issues, like the lack of a computerized identification system for individuals staying at the homeless shelter.

McComb said trends in this year’s applications revealed a disquieting state of nonprofits in the Florida Keys. “Volunteers and staff at organizations are having to pursue creative solutions to their challenges, but there was a sentiment of hope and pride for the Keys community threading throughout the proposals,” she said.

C

eltic culture, music, food and history will be celebrated at the annual Florida Keys Celtic Festival, a favorite family event in the Middle Keys set for Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 6-7, 2024.

The traditional Kilts in the Keys lead-in to the festival weekend spreads out to two Marathon locations Friday evening, Jan. 5. Attendees can gather starting at 5 p.m. at Dockside at Boot Key Harbor, 35 Sombrero Blvd., or at Keys Fisheries, 3502 Gulfview Ave. Two featured festival bands – Southwest Florida’s West of Galway Irish duo and the Police Pipe and Drum of Florida – will make stops at each location.

The weekend festival will be filled with Celtic musicians including Scottish band Albannach, West of Galway and Ireland’s the Byrne Brothers and highenergy four-sister group the Screaming Orphans.

Among traditional weekend highlights are the bagpipes and drums of the Police Pipe and Drum of Florida; a Highland athletics competition, including the nation’s only sanctioned women’s Scottish Highland Games competition as well as men’s Highland athletics; sheep herding demonstrations; a Children’s Glen with games, fun activities and face painting; and Irish and Scottish dancing.

Other attractions include Celtic merchandise, offerings by local vendors and booths representing various Scottish clans. Rounding out the weekend’s festivities are authentic Celtic food and beverages including high tea in the Iona Tea Garden, shepherd’s pie at the Nessie Pub, vendors offering Scottish eggs and fish and chips, and a selection of Keys food vendors.

Wannabe runners can participate in the Zero K Nessie Fun Run, a “run” so short that it isn’t even measured. All registered participants receive a T-shirt and medal.

The festival takes place at Marathon Community Park, MM 49 oceanside. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The event supports Hammock House at St. Columba Episcopal Church, which provides free after-school care and summer and school break camps for children in Marathon.

Single-day admission tickets for Saturday or Sunday are available in advance for $10 per person or $15 for a two-day pass. Tickets at the gate are $12 for a one-day ticket or $17 for a two-day pass. Children age 12 and under are admitted free with a paying adult. Parking is free.

T

he Florida Keys this time of year brings a crisp dusk with pinks and lavender colors. The heat of the day is going away and you can WILLIAM feel the ocean DEPAULA breeze.

With our wideis an artist, open spaces and designer and turquoise waters, gemologist who believes in the the Keys are very power of art. different from our neighboring city, Miami. We are so close but worlds apart. Our neighbors have a large international art fair that is truly an event. The beginning of December is Miami Art Week, which hosts over 20 international art fairs — not to mention the countless other shows, concerts and events. Top galleries around the world can be found at Art Basel Miami Beach, held Wednesday, Dec. 8 through Friday, Dec. 10.

Art Basel is an art fair that takes

place at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The 500,000 square feet of exhibition space holds art from more than 4,000 artists and more than 200 top international galleries. There are several other shows and events going on during the same period, but we will focus on Art Basel. An event this big brings extra traffic in the city and the beaches, so be patient and figure out when and where you are going.

Our favorite art down here might have more to do with a fish or a coastal landscape; it is important to be open-minded. Art is about exploring ideas and concepts. Having so many artists and international galleries all in one spot is a great way to learn more about art. The art fair is similar to a music festival with wellknown recording artists around the world playing in one venue. The best part is that it is right in our backyard.

Art Basel is a lot. It is hard to think of a more complicated way or a more beautiful way to say it, but there is not. Art Basel is fun, intense and tiring. There is so much to look at visually, there is art everywhere. Trust

me, if you spend a full day there, your eyes will be tired. There will be art you love, art you hate and art that you really wonder why they call it art.

When we think of art traditionally, we think of Monet or Michelangelo, but art is not only that. A lot of modern art is more of a concept or idea.

I remember first going to Art Basel in 2006. It was honestly kind of overwhelming. As an artist, I was inspired. I just remember afterward thinking that I would make it a goal to be one of the artists in the show.

Art Basel is divided into sections: Galleries, which feature the works from leading galleries; Nova, which displays works created in the last three years; Edition features print and edition pieces; Positions is dedicated to emerging artists; Survey highlights artistic practices of historical relevance. Kabinett sector has 29 curated exhibitions; Meridians sector features 20 large-scale works; and a Conversations sector has exchanges about key topics in the world of art and culture. Magazines feature art publications.

How do you tackle so much? First and foremost, it is about art. Take your time and enjoy, become familiar with what you like and don’t. Many works you will see need deep pockets to buy. Much of the artwork can go for anywhere from the cost of a car to that of a house. It is just cool to see the art world. While the festival feels like it was made for the Rockefellers, there are a lot of emerging artists who can be discovered. The festival has done a great job over the years getting the general public, artists and kids to celebrate and appreciate art.

You can’t just show up to Art Basel. Tickets are available only online at ArtBasel.com. Only a limited number of tickets are sold for each day. The public opening hours are Dec. 8-10 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Check it out. Maybe you’ll go and it will help deepen your appreciation for art; some of it may make you cringe, some may make you weep, and chances are, more than a few will have you scratching your head. Either way, the overarching lesson is that art makes you feel.
