SHERIFF’S OFFICE, NONPROFITS SEEK PERSON WHO SHOT DARTS AT CATS JIM McCARTHY

A

pair of nonprofits and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office want to know who struck a pair of feral cats with what appear to be blow darts in Tavernier.

Whiskers & Paws Forever of Monroe County’s Margie Schwartz has spent more than two decades spaying and neutering feral cats throughout Monroe County. Her efforts are mainly focused in the Upper Keys but she won’t say “no” to a cat in need of help.

Such was the case on Oct. 16, when Schwartz received a call regarding two cats that were spotted near a wooded area not far from a Tavernier condominium with darts sticking out of their bodies. Six other sharp-pointed darts of different lengths were scattered on the ground near the cats.

Schwartz said the caller was curious if the cats were being tranquilized for spaying or neutering purposes.

Schwartz quickly responded with an “absolutely not” and sprang into action.

“This is definitely an abuse-type situation,” she said. “As soon as we knew what happened, the police were called. It is a felony. Animal abuse is a felony.”

Schwartz said Denise Rathmayr and Laurie Diaz were able to safely trap one of the cats on Oct. 18. The black cat was transported to veterinarian Kyle Maddox at Marathon’s Keys Veterinary Hospital where a 6- to 8-inch dart was removed from its rear leg. The cat is now rehabbing at Schwartz’s Islamorada residence.

On Oct. 25, the other cat struck with a blow dart was safely caught. The black and white cat was transported to the veterinary hospital for treatment.

“If the darts would have hit a different spot,” she said, “the cats would have been killed.”

Schwartz added the cats were previously spayed and neutered.

“It’s like adding insult to injury,” she said.

Schwartz and Nicole Navarro, founder of Pawsitive Beginnings Inc. in Key Largo, worked together on a reward for any information leading to the perpetrator’s arrest. Navarro said she was horrified to learn about the act of animal cruelty. More than $1,000 was raised as of Oct. 24.

“As an organization whose mission is to raise awareness on respecting all animals, we are more than happy to come alongside Whiskers & Paws to help circulate this story in hopes that someone will come forward with information so the person(s) harming these cats can be stopped,” Navarro said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating the incident.

T

he real “deal” may already be signed, but on Oct. 18, around two dozen elected officials, law enforcement officers and emergency responders gathered to commemorate the ceremonial beginning of a new era in the Keys’ renowned Trauma Star air ambulance program.

With parts and support increasingly hard to come by for the program’s current three-bird fleet of discontinued Sikorsky S76 helicopters, Sheriff Rick Ramsay announced the program’s next evolution after 21 years of rescue flights: three brand new Leonardo AW139 twin-engine helicopters, set for delivery over the next two years.

Presented to the Monroe County BOCC in February of this year and approved a month later, the $52 million purchase will fund what Ramsay touted in February as “the lone available model” fitting Trauma Star’s unique requirements for range, speed and lift capabilities, all while maintaining continued manufacturer support for a common airframe.

The goal is, if needed, to take off from one of Trauma Star’s two Keys bases, fly as far as the Dry Tortugas for a patient pickup,

and fly to Miami with up to two patients, medical personnel and equipment – all at a speed of 190 mph – without the need to refuel.

The hefty price tag will be funded from Monroe County’s infrastructure fund generated from a one-cent sales tax.

The aircraft is already in use by the Miami-Dade air ambulance program, the Maryland State Police and the New Jersey State Police, among others. Its parent company is closing in on 200 airframes in service throughout Florida, Leonardo spokesman Phil Coghlan said.

“We looked at different helicopters, what was best for the future of this program with great input from our friends in the county fire rescue, aviation, our mechanics, our pilots,” Ramsay told the gathered crowd. “We do things that other programs just don’t do. … This helicopter will keep this program up for the next 25 years.”

“I would not be here today if it weren’t for that Trauma Star helicopter that flew me out when my life was on the line after a horrific car wreck,” said County Commissioner Michelle Lincoln.

“It’s allowing me right now to celebrate another birthday. The day I saw (the Sheriff) after I was out of the hospital, I said I will always support (him) and the program.

I’m honored that I’m now in a position that I get to put my money where my mouth is.”

“It’s been a long road. (Trauma Star) has won acceptance in the county, and it is now seen as totally essential,” said Commissioner David Rice. “We would be just as likely to get rid of this program today as we would our fire trucks.”

Trauma Star operates as one of the most robust air ambulance programs in the nation, with roughly 1,400 flights in the last year alone. (According to the FAA and the Association of Air Medical Services, the national average for similar programs is 264 patients per year, according to an MCSO press release.)

Coghlan said delivery of the first AW139 helicopter is slated for next fall, with a gradual phaseout of the existing 22-year-old helicopters as new machines are delivered. Although Leonardo is an Italian manufacturer, support for Trauma Star’s helicopters will come directly from support facilities in Philadelphia and Pensacola.

The Trauma Star program is a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and Monroe County Fire Rescue, operating out of the Marathon International Airport and Lower Keys Medical Center.

The Sheriff’s Office staffs the pilots and mechanics, while the flight nurses and flight paramedics are staffed by Fire Rescue. The life-saving service is provided free to residents and property owners of Monroe County.

n effort to recall one Islamorada councilman on claims of malfeasance isn’t moving forward. The chairman of a committee that led the effort states it’s due to the price tag of an election to select his replacement, if the recall effort succeeded.

In late August, a petition began to circulate in Islamorada to remove Henry Rosenthal, village councilman who landed a seat on the dais in 2020 after his opponent, Ken Davis, passed away.

Rosenthal ran for reelection in 2022, beating four other candidates for the seat. He won by 5 votes over Deb Gillis, a former councilwoman.

The recall effort was led by the political action committee Islamorada Forever, which registered with the village on Aug 16. The chairman, Casey Watkins, who ran against Rosenthal in 2022, told the Keys Councilman Henry Weekly via email that the Rosenthal. CONTRIBcommittee realized they’d UTED be asking the village to spend more than $20,000 on an election to select a replacement for a short time, with the seat and four others up for grabs in November 2024.

“We decided that it was not fiscally responsible on our part to ask this of our village and, most importantly, its residents,” Watkins said. “We know that our elected officials have noticed we pay attention and will hold them accountable to purposefully execute the jobs they were elected to perform.”

The petition claims that Rosenthal interfered with planning director Jennifer DeBoisbriand’s duties, instructing her to unlawfully serve as liaison to other council members to ask them in advance of a meeting how each one would vote on an amendment Rosenthal needed when he was attempting to buy the former Island Community Church building. Rosenthal planned to develop a theater-like venue at the time. Rosenthal was working with Dan Gulizio, the then-development services director, before he was let go by former village manager Ted Yates.

The petition stated his actions violated Section 5(12) of the village charter (malfeasance), as well as Florida’s Government in Sunshine laws, Florida’s code of ethics for public officers and employees for misuse of public position and article 2 of Florida’s constitution related to breach of public trust and abuse of public position. The petition needed 532 signatures, which is 10% of Islamorada’s roughly 5,320 registered voters, 30 days after the first signature was obtained.

“One never knows what motivates people to do what they do,” Rosenthal said, echoing a comment he made in late August. “And ultimately the truth will prevail.”

lorida Department of Transportation officials came to the Keys on Oct. 18 for an appearance before Monroe County Commissioners.

Antonette Adams, FDOT District 6 program management administrator, had the PowerPoint presentation, budget projections and a list of bridges set for replacement over the next several years, namely the two longest ones in the island chain: the Seven Mile Bridge and the Long Key Bridge.

But the FDOT colleagues couldn’t make it on time to the meeting, held at the Marathon Government Center.

Adams apologized and gave a reason that she and commissioners couldn’t let drop without noting the irony.

“We did run into traffic,” said Adams, clearly in on the joke. “You’ll have to take it up with DOT.” “Welcome to the Keys,” Commissioner Michelle Lincoln replied.

Much of the commission’s work on Oct. 18 was about traffic: the almost unimaginable costs to raise roads. Bridge replacements. They were told by FDOT that a single traffic light on Stock Island could take four years to arrive.

FDOT’s District 6 has a $4.1 billion budget for 2024-25. Monroe County’s share of the total budget is $491 million, which has tripled over the last six years. But it’s still a little less than last year.

That budget will likely hit $1 billion when it starts including a new

Seven Mile Bridge. FDOT’s five-year plan includes $659 million for replacement in 2030, and $16 million for repairs in fiscal year 2026.

Bridge repair projects tops FDOT’s tentative five-year plan, with the list at about $270 million and includes many replacements.

Along with the two longest ones in the Keys planned for replacement, FDOT has the Snake Creek Bridge, Tom’s Harbor Cut Bridge, and two on Card Sound Road: Tubby’s Bridge and Mosquito Creek Bridge.

COUNTY DRAFTS A CHARTER GOVERNMENT PROPOSAL County Attorney Bob Shillinger on Oct. 18 filed a draft of the charter county proposal for the 2024 ballot to the county commission.

The draft language, with the ballot question labeled “Proposed Home Rule Charter for Monroe County,” would have Keys voters agreeing they’re “united in the belief that governmental decisions affecting local interests should be made locally, rather than by the state.”

Monroe County leaders want to install a charter form of government, which is essentially creating a new Keyswide constitution, saying it’s the solution to repairing and raising Keys roads by creating a new tax to pay for the exponential costs.

The commission has a special charter county discussion meeting set for Monday, Nov. 6, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Marathon Government Center.

ases of migrant landings largely dissipated for a number of months in the Florida Keys — until recently, when law enforcement responded to cases two consecutive days in the Upper Keys.

One of the larger cases in recent memory unfolded during the morning of Oct. 23, when U.S. Border Patrol agents and Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to a vessel landing in Key Largo. According to Walter Slosar, CBP chief patrol agent, 19 Chinese nationals and three adult Ecuadorians were aboard the vessel. But the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported that troopers assisted CBP to apprehend three Ecuadorians and 17 subjects from China, of whom 11 were men and six were women.

Florida Highway Patrol said the incident occurred around MM 109 in Key Largo. Troopers assisted U.S. Border Patrol, which has served as the lead in migrant cases. In recent years, the federal agency lacked the necessary resources to adequately respond to the droves of Cubans and Haitians arriving to the Keys’ shore. It drew the hand of Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier in the year, following a large Haitian migrant landing in the Upper Keys, as he activated the Florida National

Guard. As a result, troopers across the state, Florida Fish & Wildlife officers and equipment and Florida Department of Law Enforcement were deployed to the Keys.

“As the negative impacts of Biden’s lawless immigration policies continue unabated, the burden of the Biden Administration’s failure falls on local law enforcement who lack the resources to deal with the crisis,” DeSantis said at the time of the activation.

Dave Kerner, Florida Department of Transportation executive director, issued a statement Oct. 24 on the recent incident in Key Largo, blasting the Biden Administration for what he called its failed border security.

“Our Florida Highway Patrol troopers stand ready to protect the U.S. border, whether in the southwestern United States or here off the coast of Florida,” he said. “This detention of Chinese nationals shows how an open border allows individuals from enemy nations to enter our communities.”

The 20-plus non-U.S. citizens are in Border Patrol’s custody.

The day before, U.S. Customs & Border Patrol responded to a migrant landing in Islamorada. According to Slosar, three Cubans arrived on a homemade vessel during the early morning.

ith Halloween comes cooler nights, fog, hay, treats and spooky fun. On Oct. 21, all these coalesced into a fun fall festival for the whole family at Islamorada’s Founders Park.

Children let out their energy on the giant crocodile and Frankenstein bounce houses and looked up in awe at the scarecrow on stilts. A juggler was on hand to entertain and instruct, and a DJ played “Monster Mash” and other Halloween favorites for a lively dance party in front of the Founders Park amphitheater.

Kids and those young at heart decorated small pumpkins with stickers, Sharpies and colored pens. Gleeful young ones came together for a costume contest, and

as for food, there was plenty.

M.E.A.T. Eatery had a booth with its award-winning burgers. Both savory and sweet crepes were at hand at the crepes booth – one with bananas and Nutella, another with cheese and ham.

Although temperatures were not as hot as usual, kids still enjoyed shaved ice in its many varieties and colors. And who could forget the donuts?

Parked trucks and cars were showing off their ghoulish decorations, laden with treats to be had by all. The American Legion, firefighters, sheriff’s office and many other organizations joined in the revelry.

Arguably the spookiest of them all was the Haunted Hayride, where guests poured in to sit neatly next to each other and were transported among the dark, spooky trees.

hat started out as a few dozen witches riding along U.S. a decade ago has grown into a magical, quirky and much anticipated tradition that raises thousands of dollars for local scholarships and families in need.

“I just like supporting any kind of public event where you can be foolish,” said Bob Hutchinson, a Key Largo resident of 30 years. “It’s just a great community to live in because people care about each other,” added Hutchinson, who wore a long black cape with a dragon skeleton attached to his bicycle helmet for the 10th annual Key Largo Witches Ride.

This year, 380 people registered to make the charity bike ride from The Catch restaurant to the Caribbean Club, including three women who made a 21-hour drive from their homes in Texas to take part.

“We’ll go anywhere for a fun party and a fundraiser,” said Debbie Fisk of her decision to drive from Texas to Key Largo to participate in the witches ride with her daughter, Casie Anderson, a Key Largo resident. Fisk brought two friends along for the road trip.

“I was busy doing something else not so fun and these two called and said ‘How about we leave a day early?’ and I said ‘Okay,’” Tana Thomas said.

“It was a lot of fun, “ added Becky Lee, describing the car ride from Texas to Key Largo. “We sang at the top of our lungs all the way down here, ’70s rock all the way,” said Lee with a laugh.

Kassidy Hebden also came in from Texas to join her friends for the Witches Ride, but opted for a faster mode of transportation.

“I flew. I’m not as tough as these guys,” Hebden said. “I’m excited about all the women involved and decorating and getting dressed up and just celebrating a good cause,” she added.

Witches Ride participants made a $25 donation to take part. As always, local businesses stepped up as well, donating loads of goodies for raffles and silent auctions. There was food, Jell-O shots, live music, a 360-degree photo booth and a synchronized witches dance performance at Caribbean Club.

Teachers Pam Caputo and Michele Thiery came up with the idea for the ride a decade ago. Never in her wildest dreams did Caputo think it would grow into the event it is today. The first year the ride raised $300, money they donated to pediatric cancer research.

Now the ride raises thousands of dollars, all of the money going back into the community.

“When people know you’re doing good, they want to do good too,” Caputo said of the growing charity ride. Some of the money raised is earmarked for a scholarship established in 2018 in memory of Joey Patterson, an eighth grader who tragically died at the age of 13.

“Joey was a Keys kid in every way,” said Jackie Patterson, Joey’s mom. “This scholarship is a way of honoring Joey who was very much loved in our community. The purpose of the scholarship is to help well-deserving students in our community on their higher educational path,” added Patterson.

Besides scholarships, money raised will also go to Upper Keys residents facing difficult times, including money to help a Key Largo School teacher who was diagnosed with breast cancer two days into the school year. She had to abruptly stop teaching to go into treatment. Other recipients will include a young woman from Islamorada suffering from lymphoma who travels to Minnesota for treatments at the Mayo Clinic and a fifth grader from Key Largo School fighting an autoimmune system condition that has left him wheelchair-bound.

“The donations we get, we count it out, and it immediately goes out to people in need,” Caputo said.

omar Gross passed away on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023 at his home in Tavernier.

He was born Feb. 22, 1973 in Santa Ana, California. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, working as a fireman in the nuclear department. On July 2, 2000, Tomar married Randy KleinGross at Bahia Hotel in Mission Bay, California after meeting at Club Med in Turks and Caicos.

They have two kids, Jonah and Oceana. He also had a large extended family, being close to many cousins, nieces and nephews, sharing many memories and good times.

Tomar loved being in the water and found his passion in scuba diving. He started diving at age 8 in Okinawa, Japan and has been involved since, getting a technical degree at the College of Oceaneering. He made many friends throughout the industry through his friendly and welcoming personality; he could be friends with the world. He was a dreamer and always pushed for new ideas.

Tomar and Randy lived together in Southern California where he worked as a set medic for Hollywood and built his own business while having his son, Jonah, and then his daughter, Oceana. They moved to the Keys in 2014 to enjoy the warm weather and the easy access to the best dive spots. Tomar will have a celebration of life at the Keys Jewish Community Center before being cremated and released in Turks and Caicos as was his longtime wish.

HUNDREDS KILLED IN 1935 LABOR DAY STORM

Editor’s Note: This is the final in a two-part series on the history behind the arrival of veterans and their contributions to the Florida Keys through the New Deal.

I

n 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was working to steer the country out of the Great Depression. One of his New Deal programs brought work projects to the Florida Keys and hundreds of World War I veterans.

Neither Henry Flagler’s railroad nor State Road 4A, the first version of the Oversea(s) Highway, brought the desired number of visitors to Key West. For those driving from the mainland, the road was incomplete and required two trips aboard an automobile ferry.

To make the drive more convenient and bring more traffic to Key West, a series of solid automobile bridges were planned to eliminate the need for a ferry. The veterans were brought to the islands to build FLORIDA the automobile bridges.

Beyond the railroad right-of-way carved through the middle of the island and the bumpy dirt road that was the first version of the Oversea(s) Highway, by 1934, the far end of the island was the only place that had been commercially developed.

Because it was there that the highway ended and the automobile ferry began, several convenience businesses had sprung up, including a restaurant serving breakfast and lunch and a gas station.

In addition to housing, equipment and building materials were stored at Camp 3, the only one with a harbor accessible from the Channel 2 and Channel 5 bridges. It is also where the first bridge project was under construction. It would have connected Lower Matecumbe Key to Jewfish Bush Key (Fiesta Key).

Camp 1 was located on Windley Key, just across Snake Creek from Plantation Key. It was the last of the three camps to be established.

A fishing lodge on the shore of Snake Creek on Windley Key was used as a hospital facility. Veterans assigned to Camp 1 worked in a nearby quarry, cutting slabs of fossilized coral limestone. Once excavated, the bedrock was loaded into train cars and carried south to Camp 3. The limestone was used to assist in constructing the piers on which the automobile bridge would be supported.

Camp 5, located at the east (or north) end of Lower Matecumbe Key, was used primarily as a housing barracks. The camp lacked some of the amenities of the other camps – a recreation hall, for instance. Camps 2 and 4 were located outside of the Keys, in St. Petersburg and Clearwater.

Progress was being made in the shallows off the harbor at Camp 3. Fill was being dredged up and dumped to create a causeway for the road and the bridge that would roughly parallel the Channel 2 Viaduct on which Henry Flagler’s train steamed, chugged and rolled.

Everything stopped on Sept. 2, 1935, when the Category 5 Labor Day Hurricane raged ashore. The eye of the storm crossed Lower Matecumbe Key to the north and Long Key to the south and battered the Keys with sustained winds in excess of 185 mph and a storm surge of 18 to 20 feet. Barometric readings reached a record-breaking low of 26.35 inches. In Camp 3, 75 vets had gathered in the mess hall. After the wind ripped the roof away, veteran James B. Lindley remembered: “Nearly everyone ran

just like a bunch of rabbits. And when we ran out, we ran right into that wind, and after that I don’t remember much what happened to the boys because the wind knocked me right on the banister of the mess hall, and I hit the ground, and I got up, and it knocked me down three times before I stayed down.”

Joseph M. Lydon, a veteran from New York City, was eating dinner in his cabin. According to documents, he said: “We heard the wind, and there were things flying through the air, but we thought we’d be all right till the train got there. Suddenly, the wind tipped the whole cabin over – carried everything out to sea. I got washed away from the cabin somehow. The waves were terrible big things.”

Lydon was lucky. The storm took hundreds of lives — including more than 200 veterans from the work camps.

On Labor Day 1935, Ernest Hemingway was living in Key West. On Sept. 7, 1935, he wrote a letter to his editor and friend, Maxwell Perkins. “We were the first in to Camp Five of the veterans who were working on the Highway construction. Out of 187, only 8 survived. Saw more dead then I’d seen in one place since the Lower Piave in June of 1918.”

He also noted, “We made five trips with provisions for survivors to different places, but nothing but dead men to eat the grub. Max, you can’t imagine it, two women, naked, tossed up into trees by the water, swollen and stinking … recognize them as the two very nice girls who ran a sandwich place and filling-station three miles from the ferry.”

As of the 2023 hurricane season, the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane registers as the most powerful hurricane to ever make landfall on North American soil. The last remnants of the veterans’ work are the eight bridge piers visible from the Channel 2 Bridge. The causeway being filled in has since been covered by mangroves and is known today as Veterans Key.

Whiskers and Paws are great friends to Pawsitive Beginnings and me. If you don’t know who they are, they offer free spay and neuter services for community cats in the Upper Keys and beyond. They even spayed Coral and Kai fox for my mom at no

charge. Talk about one nonprofit helping another; that is without parallel.

And that is what we all should be doing as a community — helping, not harming.

Whiskers and Paws is now offering a reward to anyone that provides information leading to the successful identification of the person(s) harming these cats. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is also involved and investigating this case of animal cruelty, which, by the way, can be classified as a felony depending on the type of harm done.

he Keys Weekly and Overseas Media Group team — with employees and offices in Key West, Marathon and Tavernier — enjoyed a full day on the water during a retreat on Oct. 7.

Company owners Jason Koler and Britt Myers welcomed more than 50 people — editors, designers, writers, sales pros, digital marketing strategists and their families — aboard the Fury Water Sports’ “Ultimate Adventure H2.0.”

The all-day trip included snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing, a floating playground, plus breakfast, lunch, drinks and plenty of laughs and memories.

For an entire day, the dedicated local media team put away their phones (except to take fun photos) and took full advantage of our saltwater surroundings.

ake Stock in Children Monroe recently enrolled 93 new scholars across the county — marking the highest number of new participants in the program’s history.

Of the new students, 41 are enrolled at Key Largo School, Ocean Studies Charter School, Plantation Key School, Coral Shores High School or Treasure Village Montessori. On Oct. 17, students were joined by their families as they met with their mentors and signed the paperwork to make their enrollment with Take Stock official.

“For me, it’s one of the best days of the year,” said Bryan Green, executive committee president for the Monroe County Education Foundation, to the students. “You may not realize it yet, but this will be one of the most important days of your lives.”

This milestone represents an investment of nearly $2 million in Florida Prepaid scholarships, providing these students with the opportunity to pursue their dreams of higher education.

The new students range from grades 6 to 11 and represent nine county schools. The program’s

93 families just received a new pulse of energy and mentor support. The conversations to come will be life-changing, stars in a cloudy sky.”

Key Largo School principal Darren Pais said the program not only supplies financial aid to scholars.

“Take Stock in Children empowers students to break through barriers,” Pais said. “This scholarship is invested in your futures, cultivating mindsets of your possibility and motivating students to overcome challenges and reach their full potential.”

The Take Stock in Children program of Monroe County is dedicated to fostering personal growth, developing self-confidence and building self-advocacy skills among its scholars as they strive to reach their goal of a college education or career certificate.

LONGTIME COUNTY HISTORIAN DIES AT 85 MANDY MILES mandy@keysweekly.com

H

e seemed to know nearly everything about Florida Keys history — military, politics, influences, events, economics and, yes, scandals. And if historian Tom Hambright didn’t know the answer, he knew where to find it, typically somewhere in a filing cabinet of newspaper archives on microfilm or the temperature-controlled vault at the Key West Library that holds countless cartons of Keys history.

Hambright died Oct. 14 at the age of 85, less than two years after he retired from his 36year career as Monroe County’s lead historian.

“Tom will be missed terribly, and his death leaves a big hole, but he has also left so much for us to appreciate, learn from and build upon,” said Corey Malcom, Hambright’s successor as lead historian in Monroe County Library’s Florida History Center. “We understand the Florida Keys, and how our island communities came to be, much better because of him. Tom may be gone, but he is unforgettable.”

The Monroe County Library published a comprehensive obituary at keyslibraries. org. Portions of it appear below, with additional comments compiled by the Keys Weekly Thomas Leroy Hambright was born Feb. 23, 1938, in Mooresville, North Carolina and graduated in 1960 from Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, North Carolina. He had planned to be a history teacher, but instead served 21 years in the U.S. Navy, including multiple tours in Key West.

He retired from the military in 1981 and returned to Key West, where he took computer

classes at Florida Keys Community College (now the College of the Florida Keys) and went to work for the Key West Art & Historical Society as a curator for three years.

Library legacy & worldwide reach In 1985, Hambright joined the Monroe County Public Library’s Florida History department, where he continued and expanded the work of Betty Bruce, researching Conch genealogy and greatly expanding the library’s collection of historical documents, newspapers, photos, books, diaries and more. He answered endless questions from journalists, homeowners, artists, researchers, historians, authors, realtors and more.

Though a popular public speaker, Hambright’s widest reach was online, where the Florida Keys History Center’s image archive on Flickr has been viewed more than 43 million times.

Hambright led a team of volunteers who made high-resolution scans, identified them, dated them and uploaded them — more than 23,000 images and counting. They’re now freely available for viewing and downloading, while the digital collection continues to grow daily. “…As I began my own career in maritime and local history, no phone call went ignored; no question went unanswered, even if that meant hours of digging through primary source materials on microfilm or in Florida History’s vault. Tom’s reverence and passion for local and maritime history seemed part of his genetic code. His eagerness to read everything, commit it to his eidetic memory, and share it in a cohesive and absorbing manner set him apart from all others. For years everyone said, ‘Tom is irreplaceable, What will we do without Tom?’ We will carry on his good work, but

it is difficult to imagine him not being on the other end of the phone to assist.” — Cori Convertito, curator & historian, Key West Art & Historical Society.

“Tom and I served in Vietnam at the same time in 1965 and 1966. He had a tough assignment as the only American serving on a Vietnamese river junk boat and the only Naval officer in highly dangerous areas. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V.” (Combat V honors those “exposed to personal hazard during direct participation in combat operations,” according to the Navy.)

“He was a gentle, quiet man with a big heart and an exceptional knowledge of Key West who will be greatly missed.” — Bill Verge, former Key West city commissioner and current director of U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk floating museum.

“A great joy of my 23 years working with Tom was him peeking in my office door frequently to announce, ‘We’ve got treasure.’ I would proceed directly to the History Room, where Tom would delightedly explain a new donation. “Endlessly fascinated by the history of Key West and the Florida Keys, Tom was inspired by Paul Harvey’s phrase ‘The Rest of the Story.’ He loved to uncover the deeper, little-known backstories. The Florida Keys History Center itself is Tom’s largest legacy. Lately, everything Abbie Sargent touches turns to silver or gold. The hard-working swimmer has dedicated herself to her sport and team and the work has paid off; Sargent won the district championship in the 200 IM and brought home a second gold in the 200 free relay. She went on to earn a pair of silver medals as well, in the 100 breaststroke individual race and the 200 medley relay, and qualified for the next round of competition at regionals in all four events. The relentless junior is not finished competing yet.

“Even with her dominant swims at districts this past Thursday, she is determined to drop time and prove herself even further in our region and at the state level,” head coach Kelly Kater said. For her dedication, effort and continued pursuit of excellence in her sport, Abbie Sargent is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

CORAL SHORES, KEY WEST’S POSTSEASON RUNS CONCLUDE

Coaches already looking forward to next volleyball season

W

hen Marathon and Coral Shores landed in the same playoff bracket last week, it was inevitable that one team’s season would end and one would go on in hopes of making a deep run into districts. Unfortunately for Marathon, the Dolphins were on the losing end of the FHSAA District 16 3A quarterfinal match. The Hurricanes defeated the Fins on Oct. 17, winning all three sets of the match and moving on to the semifinals the following night. There, the third-seeded ’Canes upset Somerset South Homestead, ranked second in the district, 3-1, sending them into the district championship game on Oct. 20 against top-seeded Palmer Trinity.

The road to the championship game was a familiar one for Coral Shores – they played exactly the same trio of teams in the 2022 postseason. The outcomes would be identical, as well. Coral Shores fell to Palmer 3-0, ending the season with a noteworthy 15-10 record.

Hurricanes coach Sam Ovalle had nothing but praise for his hard-working squad.

“I’m so proud of my team.This was a goal of ours from the beginning of the season, to get back to this game and see what happened and we made it back,” he said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get over the hump against a great Palmer team. We didn’t play our best game tonight and they were at the top of their game and it showed.”

Despite the loss, Coral Shores saw fantastic play from senior captain Brooke Mandozzi, who once again led the Lady ’Canes on offense and defense. Mandozzi had seven kills, eight digs, three blocks and a service rating of 3.0 in the game.

“Palmer was really trying to keep the ball away from Brooke all game – you could hear them talking about it,” Ovalle said.

Also stepping up for the ’Canes was Niveah Howard, who appeared on the JV roster until just two weeks ago. Since then, Howard has shown stellar play, leading the team with five blocks against Palmer and scrambling all over the court in a valiant effort to keep the Hurricanes in the game.

“This team has been such a pleasure to coach. I’m going to miss coaching our three seniors so much,” said Ovalle. “Brooke, Crystal (Gutierrez) and Iona (Holmquist) are so special to me and have given so much to the program. They’re amazing players and even better young ladies. … (But) I’m also excited about our future as we have a lot of strong players coming back.”

Key West’s formidable schedule helped them earn the home court advantage in the FHSAA District 16 4A quarterfinals. The Conchs made light work of Miami Killian on Oct. 17, winning in three sets and moving on to the semifinals. There, Key West faced topseeded Gulliver Prep, a perennial powerhouse in prep volleyball.

The Conchs lost 3-0 to the Raiders, a team which went on to win a challenging district and is now ranked first in the regional bracket.

Coach Sara Eckert had nothing but praise for her tenacious team.

“We saw tremendous growth in each player’s individual skills this season,” she said. “Gulliver is a powerhouse and very likely to make a run for the state title this year. It’s unfortunate that we faced them so early in the tournament, but it’s never a bad thing to compete against the best. The hope is for all of the returning players to want it that much more and embrace the challenge to keep developing and reach that same level.”

The Conchs finished the season 8-18 after facing a tough schedule of some of the most talented teams in the state.

arathon traveled to Miami Country Day to race in the Fast Times meet against a field of nine teams on Oct. 18. The ladies ended up in the middle of the pack in fifth place, while the gentlemen finished in third place overall. Senior Mikkel Ross kept the number one spot for the Lady Fins, finishing the race in 22:57 and in 18th place overall in a field of more than 150 athletes. Behind her were junior Ella Dunn in 23:25 (21st) and senior Rain Banks in 23:51 (23rd). Freshmen Madelyn Thornton, Maeve Merryman and Sara Robinson were fourth through sixth for the Fins, and seventh grader Rebecca Merryman was number seven.

The third-place boys squad saw an unsurprising top three finishers. Vance Bursa finished second overall and first for the Fins in a blazing 16:33.

Younger brother Tony finished 11th overall and second for Marathon in 17:48, a marked improvement from his best times thus far. The oldest Bursa, Jakub, was the third Dolphin to cross the line, in 18:21, good enough for 16th place overall.

Dillon Shelar was next, breaking the 19-minute barrier for the first time. If he can duplicate his 18:56 PR, Marathon will be in great position at districts.

Completing the top seven places for Marathon were Mason Buxton, Allan Taylor and Adrien Holdinga.

Coach Jim Murphy’s team runs deep this season, as Caleb Shelar and Lucian Burns finished within 12 seconds of Holdinga, making the top seven for districts a difficult decision for the veteran coach.

Key West participated in the 305 Classic at the familiar Larry & Penny Thompson park in Miami.

Caylaa Makimaa finished first for the Conchs and fourth overall in a time of 20:16. Naima Thomas was next in 22:09, a personal best by more than 20 seconds. Laira Anaya also recorded a season-best time, clocking in at 23:17 in third place for Key West.

Violet Jangraw, Briana Nodal, Alexa Abad, Mia Steer and Ava Gonzalez rounded out the top finishers for the Lady Conchs. Nodal shaved off nearly a minute from her previous personal best, something quite notable this late in the season. Makimaa and Steer had PRs for the course, which will come in handy at districts, which will be held at the same location. Key West’s boys had a week of rest to help prepare for districts next week.

The Coral Shores boys also attended the 305 Classic to put in some work. Jamie Cary was the first Hurricane to cross the line at 20:51. Nathaniel Shugarman was second in 20:52 and Sean Andrews was third, finishing in 22:12. Taking places four through seven were Connor Daniels, Lochlain James, Tristan Sanchez and Kellan Borbeau. The girls team had the week off to prepare for a final home meet on Oct. 23 before the postseason officially begins.

Key West will use its multirace advantage at Larry & Penny Thompson Park on Nov. 1 at the FHSAA 2A district race. The Conchs will be joined by the Hurricanes for a 5 p.m. girls start while the boys will take their marks at 5:40 p.m. 1A Marathon races at Palmer on Nov. 2, with girls starting at 4:20 p.m. and boys at 5 p.m.

ey West’s record-holding AJ Smith broke even more records at districts this past week, becoming the first district boys double medalist for the Conchs.

With wins in the 50 free and 100 free events, Smith earned an automatic bid to regionals on Saturday, Oct. 28. Smith serves as the anchor for two relay teams, both of which also qualified, making him a very busy swimmer next week as he attempts to become a two-time state qualifier for the southernmost swim team. Smith is ranked first in Region 4 in the 50 and second in the 100.

The Conchs finished fourth in both the boys and girls competitions at the FHSAA District 12 2A championships on Oct. 18. The relay teams fared well in the event, with the 200 medley girls team of Katelyn Noss, Gracie Lechnar, Taylor Gibson and Alyssandra Camargo placing fourth in the event and receiving a bid to regionals. Noss, Lechnar, Camargo and Reeghan Davis teamed up for a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay, which did not quite make the cut for regionals but placed the team in an alternate position should another team be unable to compete.

The 400 free relay team of Noss, Davis, Hadley Bardoni and Megan Fedor placed sixth, advancing to regionals with their time in a fast-paced district. Camargo will be busy next week swimming her relays in addition to the 50 free and 100 free individual events, in which she placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Her times were fast enough to earn at-large bids to the next level of competition.

The boys’ relays were strong as well, advancing the 400 free team of Jeffrey Hoyt, Santiago Gonzalez, Westley Ellerbee and Roan Milelli. The team placed sixth and qualified for an at-large spot via time. Eli Morris, Hugo Blinckmann, Anthony Korzen and AJ Smith placed fourth in the 200 medley relay, advancing to regionals. Hoyt, Milelli, Korzen and Smith also qualified in the 200 free relay, placing fourth at districts.

Gonzalez and Hoyt were given some hope in individual events, with both earning alternate spots in their events.

Gonzalez was 10th in the 200 free and Hoyt placed fifth in the 500 free event.

Coral Shores claimed two district titles of their own at the FHSAA District 12 1A championships on Oct. 21. The Lady ’Canes placed fourth in the competition, advancing all three of their relay teams plus four individuals.

Abbie Sargent was the big winner for the ’Canes, earning a district gold medal in the 200 IM. Sargent earned silver in the 100 breaststroke and qualified as an individual in both events. She went on to earn gold again, this time in the 200 free relay where she teamed up with Layne Smith, Riley Cooper and Allegra Fucaraccio. The same foursome claimed

second in the 200 medley relay, earning silver medals and a bid to regionals in that event. Larkin Dunn, Sophia Figueredo, Rachel Rusch and Lola Young placed fifth in the 400 free relay with a time fast enough to advance to the next level via an at-large bid. Layne Smith placed second in the 200 free and third in the 500 free, giving her four events at regionals.

Fucaraccio qualified in the 200 IM via at-large bid and Figueredo will serve as an alternate in the same event plus the 100 breaststroke should another athlete be unable to compete.

The final individual qualifier for the Lady Canes is Cooper, who will swim at least three events including

her two relays plus the 100 fly. Cooper placed fourth in the event at districts. She also is a long shot to swim a fourth race, the 50 free, in which she is an alternate.

Rusch placed third in her first year of competitive diving but was just under the qualifying score for regionals.

Four athletes on the boys team qualified for regional competition and will join the girls in Fort Lauderdale. The 400 free relay team of Patrick O’Donnell, Anthony Jeffry, Evan Osipov and Mason Osipov placed fifth and qualified for an at-large appearance. The same team took sixth in the 200 free and are the alternate team at regionals. O’Donnell is the lone individual competitor for Coral Shores. He placed fourth in the 200 IM and 500 free and will represent the ’Canes at the next level.

Key West will take on the rest of FHSAA’s 2A Region 4 athletes on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Stuart at the Sailfish Splash. Events begin at 10 a.m. 1A Coral Shores dives in on Friday, Oct. 27 at the Nova Southeastern University Aquatics Complex, also beginning at 10 a.m. Swimmers who manage to make the cut for the big show have just one week after regionals to prepare. This year’s state meet will take place in Ocala at the Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training Center, on Nov. 3 for Key West and Nov. 4 for Coral Shores.

SUGARLOAF CLAIMS CONCH CUP VOLLEYBALL TITLE Sharks defeat longtime rival Basilica School

ct. 21 was a day to remember for the girls and coaches of the Sugarloaf Middle School varsity volleyball team, as the Sharks defeated longtime rival and perennial tournament winner Basilica School in the 2023 Conch Cup. “We wanted to win this tournament so badly,” said assistant coach Jerry Harbin. “Basilica wins this tournament every year, so we really wanted to come home with a victory.”

The varsity Lady Sharks began the day playing Key Largo School, defeating the Tornadoes in a 2-0 match. Next up was a match against Horace O’Bryant School. The Sharks also beat the Buccaneers 2-0. Feeling confident from their previous matches, Sugarloaf set out to play the Basilica School but the Lady Sharks didn’t start off so well, dropping their first set of the tournament.

“Coach Jerry and I had a heart-to-heart with (the team) after that first loss,” said head coach Jen Alexander. “We knew they had to get their heads on straight if they wanted to pull it off.”

The second set began and the Sharks emerged victorious, tying the score 1-1 and forcing a 15-point final set – in tournament play, normal sets are played to 25 points. A back-and-forth affair came down to a 15-15 tie, with one team needing to pull ahead by two points. Basilica scored to go up 16-15, followed by an answer from the Sharks to tie the set 16-16. Starting with a serve from eighth grader Mavis Bishop, the Sharks took a 17-16 lead, with the final point for Sugarloaf coming off an aced serve from Bishop to put the Sharks ahead for good, 18-16.

“My heart was racing during that last game,” said Alexander, who said there “wasn’t a dry eye on the court” after the win. “I kept trying to inspire them during each time out, letting them know they could do it if they really wanted it badly enough. I am so proud of each and every one of them, and I love coaching them so much.”

MARATHON HOMECOMING COMEBACK STALLS ON FINAL DRIVE Coral Shores picks up dominant road win

arathon football always draws a good crowd, and last week’s homecoming celebration packed the bleachers even more. The Fins’ original opponent bowed out weeks into the season, forcing them to scramble for a team to play on short notice. Gateway Prep out of Fort Myers stepped up and traveled all the way to Marathon to give the Dolphins a homecoming game to remember. Although the Fins came up short in the final moments of the game, the hard-fought contest was a good matchup and gave fans a reason to stay in their seats until the final whistle.

Marathon struck in the opening drive of the game off a Braulio Garcia power run. Fabbianho Louis Jeune added the extra point for the Fins, giving the home team hope for a homecoming win.

The Griffins then seemingly recovered from their long trip, scoring on back-to-back drives while holding the Dolphins on defense. But without a kicker, Gateway was not able to convert on their extra point attempts, making the score 7-12.

The Griffins were driving again when Yemcel Garcia enlivened the Dolphins with an interception, turning the ball over to Marathon with just over 30 seconds left in the half. Marathon could not capitalize on the opportunity and the score stood at halftime.

After halftime, the Griffins picked up some momentum, scoring a pair of quick touchdowns to pull ahead 24-7. Marathon found their groove and answered back with another Braulio Garcia touchdown run after a long Josh Wall run to close the gap. With the score at 24-14, Marathon’s defense dug deep to close out the Griffins in the second half.

A Carlos Lezcano 8-yard run put the Fins within reach of a win, and they went on the march, but a grounded snap and a fumble in the final moments of the game ended the hopes for Marathon to come from behind. As the buzzer sounded, the score was 24-21 with the Griffins picking up a road win.

“We are a young team and we have to learn how to win,” said Marathon coach Sean McDonald. “Friday night was an important lesson on how to get there. We need to play with the same intensity as we did in the second half for four entire quarters in order to win games. The team fought hard, but we just ran out of time.”

Up next for the Fins is a star-studded Palmer Trinity at home on Oct. 26 before a trip to Somerset South Homestead the following week to cap off their season.

a resounding victory against Tradition Prep out of Port St. Lucie on Oct. 19. The ‘Canes made the three-hour trip to play the Pirates on their homecoming and senior night celebration.

“We executed well in a festive atmosphere,” Coral Shores coach Ed Holly said.

“It was a much closer game than the score dictated.”

That score, 51-19 in favor of the Hurricanes, spoiled the fun for Tradition Prep and gave Coral Shores their fourth victory of the season.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard on their first drive, but Dantay Diorio had a quick answer, scoring on a 62-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 14-7 in the Hurricanes’ favor.

RJ Dube blocked a punt on an ensuing Tradition Prep drive, giving the ‘Canes the momentum. AJ Putetti scored a 9-yard TD, and a missed extra point made the score 20-7 at the beginning of quarter two. A Jamoris Davis fumble recovery and strong play on both sides capped off the first half.

After halftime, Dantay Diorio carried the ball in for a 43-yard touchdown run.

went for 2 instead of kicking an extra point, something unusual for Holly under such conditions.

As it turns out, there was a perfectly valid explanation. “At their field, when an extra point was good, the ball landed in a swamp with alligators,” Holly said. “I only had three balls to lose, so we had to go for 2.”

Putetti added another nine-yard run and Diorio carried it in for another 2-point conversion at the end of the third quarter, giving the Hurricanes a 36-7 lead.

Quarter four included a long touchdown pass from the Pirates, and bolstered by their energetic crowd, Tradition Prep was driving again. Isaac Holmes put an end to that, intercepting the ball before adding a 30yard touchdown run of his own. Holmes had a second 18-yard TD late in the game, and the Pirates added six on their final possession, making the final score 51-19.

Holmes has been filling in for starting quarterback Yemcel Moreno, who is out with a knee injury. Moreno’s return this season is uncertain, but Holly is hopeful and praised his attitude and leadership from the sidelines. He also had praise for Xico Reynoso, who held the line on both sides of the ball, and for Davis and Eddie Holly on defense. The younger Holly had 15 tackles.

The Hurricanes play Somerset South Homestead on Oct. 27 at home, a team whose running back Holly described as “dynamic” and “legitimate.” Their final game will be a conference playoff contest against the winner of the Archbishop Carroll/Ransom Everglades game the following Thursday night at Harris Park in Homestead.

Key West worked on some fine-tuning and recovery from nagging injuries in their bye week. They will enjoy homecoming on Oct. 27 against Gateway High School out of Fort Myers.

The Conchs’ final regular season game will be the following week in Ft. Lauderdale against undefeated Archbishop McCarthy.

Top spots continue to shift in boys and girls competitions

K

eys golfers decided to meet in the middle for nine more holes of local competition before heading to their respective district tournaments. On Oct. 16, Marathon’s Summer Haines had the low score on her home course with one of the largest margins of victory seen in match play this season.

Haines won the contest with 44 strokes, parring on four holes and gaining some confidence prior to her final district competition, in which she hopes to make it to the next level for the first time in her career.

Also hoping to cap off her season in style is Coral Shores junior Gabby Thomas. Thomas shot a 51 in her final regular season round and has all the skills necessary to advance. Key West’s Claudia Steling was two strokes behind Thomas after a stellar start. Steling, just a sophomore, birdied on hole 1, then had some trouble later in the course, placing her third in the match. Like Haines and Thomas, Steling has what it takes to make it to regionals this season if she plays a solid game. Key West’s Lexi Finigan and Marathon’s Makenna Haines, both freshmen, placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

GOLFERS PUT IN AN EXTRA NINE BEFORE DISTRICTS

Marathon’s Michael Merryman was the boys’ winner, shooting a 39 in his final home match. The senior birdied on hole 4, then shot an eagle on 7, winning the event by four strokes. Key West Junior Andrew Bassett came in second place, followed by freshman Roco Piscetello of Marathon and senior Ryan Kight of Key West, who tied for third with 44s.

Junior Conch Peyton Zubieta scored a 46, good enough for fifth place in the match. Zubieta earned two birdies and an eagle in the round, but a few tough holes mixed in tarnished what would otherwise have been a phenomenal game. Marathon sophomore Dylan Ziels, seventh grader Emmett Merryman and junior Leo Mendez were sixth through eighth, Key West’s Ty Hill was ninth and Mason Thornton of Marathon was 10th.

The top golfers for Coral Shores were Brock Bynum and Derek Ramos, who tied Key West’s Smith Switzer for the 11th spot. Just as with the girls this season, a coveted round at regionals is within grasp of all of the Keys’ top male golfers. It will come down to perseverance, solid play and a bit of luck.
