t’s back to the drawing board – literally – for Marathon’s Quay property, according to direction given to staff by the Marathon City Council at its Oct. 24 workshop.

Originally purchased in 2018, the property was headed for a redesign following an extensive public input process throughout 2020 and 2021. But with an exploding vacation rental population and the continued growth of the Keys’ boating community, often resulting in a line of trailers extending onto U.S. 1, as well as limited options for installing new ramps to reduce congestion, councilmen Lynn Landry, Kenny Matlock and Jeff Smith said they’d like to explore the feasibility of adding a second boat ramp to the property – eschewing some or all of the original park concept on the site.

“I’m driving this simply because when we designed this park, we didn’t have the problem we have now,” said Landry. “If we redesign it now, it might be two years down the road we have boat ramps. If we don’t … it might be 10 years down the road before we see another boat ramp, because we don’t have any other properties other than this one to add boat ramps to.”

Smith echoed Landry’s sentiments, asking for “a pause” on the park while exploring other options, while Matlock panned the inefficiency of the site’s current ramp, frequently clogged by inexperienced trailer drivers attempting a 90 degree turn to a vehicle’s passenger side from a narrow entryway. Preliminary sketches of a redesign provided to the council included a double-wide boat ramp with an additional 14 boat trailer parking spaces.

The pivot was met with clear concern from city staff, who bristled at pausing the work in progress from paid consultants for a redesign, as well as the possible loss of $844,800 in grant funding for the original park obtained through the Florida Community Trust (FCT) Grant program.

Given that boat ramps are now a money-making enterprise for Marathon due to ramp use and parking fees enacted earlier this year, city staff would need to re-approach administrators about the possibility of continuing to fund the new design with the existing grant – originally intended for passive recreational projects.

Speaking with the Weekly after the meeting, City Manager George Garrett said he thought the chances were “50-50 at best” that the funds would still be available for a redesigned park.

“I’m going to say I disagree (with the redesign),” Garrett told the council. “So at that point, that’s my opinion personally as a taxpayer and as a professional sitting in front of you.”

“If we’re going to go ahead and say ‘I’m giving up a grant,’ we now have boat ramp fees,” Smith said. “We also have capital infrastructure fees we used to acquire this property. There are other sources of revenue besides grants to do what we want to do with this property.”

Mayor Luis Gonzalez blasted the possibility of pushing the start of construction further down the road.

“We’ve talked about this, and we’ve had workshops and more workshops,

and we’ve beat this horse to death,” he said. “This plan could take two years, and in two years from now, there could be five different people up here, and they have a whole different idea, and this goes back to square one again, and nothing gets accomplished again.

“We’re (also) talking about grants. … (If) now we go back to the grant originator and tell them now we want to change, they’re going to say, ‘Marathon doesn’t have their stuff together,’ you’re going to get pushed to the bottom of the pile, and guess what’s going to happen when Marathon asks for a grant?”

“I think the mayor read my notes,” added Vice Mayor Robyn Still. “I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard from citizens talking about how nothing’s happening at the Quay, and it just keeps getting postponed.”

Though no formal vote was taken, with a persistent 3-2 majority of Landry, Smith and Matlock, the council directed staff to halt work on the existing park plans and move forward with a two-ramp redesign.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO TRAFFIC HEADACHES FOR KEYS COMMISSIONERS COUNTY’S CHARTER PROPOSAL FOR THE 2024 BALLOT MAKES PROGRESS, AND HOW HARD IS IT TO GET A TRAFFIC LIGHT?

lorida Department of Transportation officials came to the Keys on Oct. 18 for an appearance before Monroe County Commissioners.

Antonette Adams, FDOT District 6 program management administrator, had the PowerPoint presentation, budget projections and a list of bridges set for replacement over the next several years, namely the two longest ones in the island chain: the Seven Mile Bridge and the Long Key Bridge.

But the FDOT colleagues couldn’t make it on time to the meeting, held at the Marathon Government Center.

Adams apologized and gave a reason that she and commissioners couldn’t let drop without noting the irony.

“We did run into traffic,” said Adams, clearly in on the joke. “You’ll have to take it up with DOT.” “Welcome to the Keys,” Commissioner Michelle Lincoln replied.

Much of the commission’s work on Oct. 18 was about traffic: the almost unimaginable costs to raise roads. Bridge replacements. They were told by FDOT that a single traffic light on Stock Island could take four years to arrive.

FDOT’s District 6 has a $4.1 billion budget for 2024-25. Monroe County’s share of the total budget is $491 million, which has tripled over the last six years. But it’s still a little less than last year.

That budget will likely hit $1 billion when it starts including a new Seven Mile Bridge. FDOT’s five-year plan includes $659 million for replacement in 2030, and $16 million for repairs in fiscal year 2026.

Bridge repair projects top FDOT’s tentative five-year plan, with the list at about $270 million and includes many replacements.

Along with the two longest ones in the Keys planned for replacement, FDOT has the Snake Creek Bridge, Tom’s Harbor Cut Bridge, and two on Card Sound Road: Tubby’s Bridge and Mosquito Creek Bridge.

COUNTY DRAFTS PROPOSAL FOR CHARTER GOVERNMENT County Attorney Bob Shillinger on Oct. 18 filed a draft of the charter county proposal for the 2024 ballot to the county commission.

“united in the belief that governmental decisions affecting local interests should be made locally, rather than by the state.”

Monroe County leaders want to install a charter form of government, which is essentially creating a new Keyswide constitution, saying it’s the solution to repairing and raising Keys roads by creating a new tax to pay for the exponential costs.

The commission has a special charter county discussion meeting set for Monday, Nov. 6, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Marathon Government Center.

Shilliinger has been on a charter presentation tour, including a stop before the Key West City Commission, to explain to residents across Monroe the county’s side: that making the Keys a charter county would enable the region to create a tax to fund projects to alleviate road flooding.

The proposed “transportation tax,” limited to 1 percent, would likely add up to multiple millions a year that the Keys could count on for roads, county leaders say. Tourists would pay two-thirds of the tax, Shillinger has said.

People have asked whether an increase in property taxes would work rather than creating a transportation tax, which county leaders say would largely be paid by tourists.

“They want to see some numbers,” Shillinger told county commissioners at their Oct. 18 meeting. “What are these projects really going to cost?”

By the end of the year, Shillinger said the county will have road projects figures that will help taxpayers calculate the options.

“We’ll be able to come up with an example of how things would shake out for a typical homeowner,” Shillinger said.

“We are not doing this as a power grab,” Lincoln, of Marathon, said at the BOCC’s October meeting. “We do not want to preempt our municipalities, we respect our partners. This could possibly be a financial benefit for them as well in receiving some of this infrastructure tax money that could go to improve their road projects, their transportation issues, their bridge repair as well.”

The “Home Rule” ballot language is drafted as: “Shall there be a Home Rule Charter for Monroe County, establishing the form and powers of local self-government; maintaining the legislative powers of a board of five commissioners elected

countywide; maintaining an appointed professional manager; providing that municipal ordinances prevail over conflicting county ordinances.”

The BOCC’s next regular meeting is 9 a.m.

WHEN’S COLLEGE ROAD TRAFFIC LIGHT COMING BACK? COUNTY PRESSES FDOT While the FDOT officials were at the Oct. 18 meeting, Lincoln put them on the spot about a traffic light on College Road on Stock Island that worked wonders for locals in 2021.

The intersection light was temporary, to help alleviate traffic slowdowns during nearby bridge construction. Those who rely on that route want it back.

The light allowed drivers to turn from College Road onto U.S. 1. Without the light, that left turn is nearly impossible.

But Lincoln’s push for FDOT to make it happen ran into government red tape traffic.

FDOT said the traffic light is on their radar – funded for construction in 2027.

It’s been more than a year since Sheriff Rick Ramsay confirmed to the Keys Weekly that state officials were mapping out plans to put the light back.

Danny Iglesias, FDOT’s district director of development, said they would follow up with their traffic operations office. It’s about the funding source and schedule and then making the plans.

“We understand the need, and how urgent it is for the community,” Iglesias said. “It’s just different when it comes to us installing permanent signal features than when we go out and put up a temporary structure.”

Lincoln politely but firmly asked again.

“That’s a very dangerous intersection,” Lincoln said. “Can a temporary one be put there until you can get the permanent funding?” Lincoln asked.

“I’m harping on you and I’m sorry, but this is so important to the people.”

FDOT didn’t say no on another “temporary” fix.

But temporary structures are designed for short-term use only, Iglesias said.

“It was very temporary,” Iglesias said. “We’d have to go see if anything can be done on an interim basis.”

LOCAL ARTIST SHANNON WILEY TO HELP WITH WYLAND’S FINAL LARGE-SCALE MURAL Pair will travel to National Aquarium of Cuba for installation

ome the beginning of November, the Acuario Nacional de Cuba (National Aquarium of Cuba) in Havana will have two beautiful large-scale murals painted by local artist Shannon Wiley and none other than American artist and conservationist Robert Wyland. With the help of local Cuban artists and children in the Havana area, this will be the last large-scale mural project that Wyland will ever paint.

“It’s kind of the end of an era,” said Wiley. “People don’t realize how difficult it is to stand on those risers and paint while you’re high up in the air. He’s been doing this a long time, and although it’s personally rewarding, it’s really exhausting work. Wyland’s mastery of painting on a larger-thanlife scale, and the accurate portrayal of the species he chooses, is beyond compare.”

Established in 1960 to focus on research and environmental education, the aquarium, dolphinarium and host of various sea lion shows will showcase its two new walls inspired by the plants and animals that surround its boundaries, as well as the history of the aquarium.

According to its website, the National Aquarium of Cuba is a scientific research center that specializes in environmental education and disclosure of the flora, fauna and ecology of the marine environment. Its main objective is to increase both culture and education concerning care, conservation and rational use of the sea, its resources and coasts.

The exhibits displayed at the aquarium resemble coastal zones of many of the islands and keys of the Cuban archipelago. They include a nearly 50,000-gallon tank for the exhibition of 30 different specimens of marine turtles, along with a mangrove forest and samples of coastal caves along the island chain.

While a team of artists will stay in Cuba for about a week to help complete the underwater scene, Wiley was asked by Wyland to be his lead assistant for the upcoming mural.

of my professional life to be invited to work with, and learn from, such an accomplished and knowledgeable marine life artist,” said Wiley.

The pair met two years ago when they were refurbishing the mural at Marathon’s K-Mart plaza. An email sent by Wiley to the renowned painter highlighting the former’s expertise and achievements soon earned an invitation from Wyland to be a part of the project.

“One time we painted together, we were 30 feet in the air,” said Wiley. “It was extraordinary because I’ve been a fan of his ever since I was a little kid.

He is nothing short of generous and thoughtful as can be, and it’s such an honor to work with him.”

The K-Mart plaza project was “Whaling Wall #87 - Florida’s Radiant Reef,” which was originally painted by Wyland and Guy Harvey in 2001. The updated mural includes a mother and calf humpback whale with various fish species – and an octopus added in 2022.

Other past collaborative projects include the mural at the Waterfront Brewery in Key West. The iconic mural graces two sides of the seaside brewery at Key West’s historic seaport and features a large manta ray, a hammer-

head shark, turtles and local corals.

The last team-up by the artists is the patio deck mural on the side of the Crane Point Museum and Nature Center’s gift shop in Marathon. This mural features bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles and local landscaping.

When not collaborating with famous artists or teaching the skill at Stanley Switlik Elementary, Wiley is proud to be a youth sports coach and donate his time and skills to worthy causes – just ask Looe Key Reef Resort, which accepted his donated painting “The Wave” for its recent Lahaina Luau wildfire relief fundraiser. Wiley's portfolio includes paintings, etchings, sculptures and large-scale murals that can be found throughout the U.S. and the eastern Caribbean.

“I am proud to have provided my artwork for projects at Disney, Dick's Sporting Goods, Radisson Resorts, CocoKey Water Parks, HHGregg Department Stores, and TGI Friday's restaurants, among many others,” he said. “I am always eager to collaborate with other artists on even the wildest projects, and I pride myself on ‘always growing’ in my love for, and my skills in, art.”

SIGNING COMPLETES $52 MILLION DEAL FOR THREE NEW HELICOPTERS

A FIRST LOOK AT THE FUTURE FOR TRAUMA STAR

T

he real “deal” may already be signed, but on Oct. 18, around two dozen elected officials, law enforcement officers and emergency responders gathered to commemorate the ceremonial beginning of a new era in the Keys’ renowned Trauma Star air ambulance program.

With parts and support increasingly hard to come by for the program’s current three-bird fleet of discontinued Sikorsky S76 helicopters, Sheriff Rick Ramsay announced the program’s next evolution after 21 years of rescue flights: three brand new Leonardo AW139 twin-engine helicopters, set for delivery over the next two years.

Presented to the Monroe County BOCC in February of this year and approved a month later, the $52 million purchase will fund what Ramsay touted as “the lone available model” fitting Trauma Star’s unique requirements for range, speed and lift capabilities, all while maintaining continued manufacturer support for a common airframe.

The goal is, if needed, to take off from one of Trauma Star’s two Keys bases, fly as far as the Dry Tortugas for a patient pickup, and fly to Miami with up to two patients, medical personnel and equipment – all at a speed of 190 mph – without the need to refuel.

The hefty price tag will be funded from Monroe County’s infrastructure fund generated from a one-cent sales tax.

The AW139 aircraft is already in use by the Miami-Dade air ambulance program, the Maryland State Police and the New Jersey State Police, among others. Its parent company is closing in on 200 airframes in service throughout Florida, Leonardo spokesman Phil Coghlan said.

“We looked at different helicopters, what was best for the future of this program with great input from our friends in the county fire rescue, aviation, our mechanics, our pilots,” Ramsay told the gathered crowd. “We do things

that other programs just don’t do. … This helicopter will keep this program up for the next 25 years.”

“I would not be here today if it weren’t for that Trauma Star helicopter that flew me out when my life was on the line after a horrific car wreck,” said County Commissioner Michelle Lincoln. “It’s allowing me right now to celebrate another birthday. The day I saw (the Sheriff) after I was out of the hospital, I said I will always support (him) and the program. I’m honored that I’m now in a position that I get to put my money where my mouth is.”

“It’s been a long road. (Trauma Star) has won acceptance in the county, and it is now seen as totally essential,” said Commissioner David Rice. “We would be just as likely to get rid of this program today as we would our fire trucks.”

Trauma Star operates as one of the most robust air ambulance programs in the nation, with roughly 1,400 flights in the last year alone.

(According to the FAA and the Association of Air Medical Services, the national average for similar programs is 264 patients per year, per an MCSO press release.)

Coghlan said delivery of the first AW139 helicopter is slated for next fall, with a gradual phase-out of the existing 22-year-old helicopters as new machines are delivered. Although Leonardo is an Italian manufacturer, support for Trauma Star’s helicopters will come directly from support facilities in Philadelphia and Pensacola.

The Trauma Star program is a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and Monroe County Fire Rescue, operating out of the Marathon International Airport and Lower Keys Medical Center. The Sheriff’s Office staffs the pilots and mechanics, while the flight nurses and flight paramedics are staffed by Fire Rescue. The lifesaving service is provided free to residents and property owners of Monroe County.

arathon’s Turtle Hospital is raising the stakes to find the culprit behind a since-euthanized loggerhead sea turtle that appeared to be intentionally speared in the head.

Hospital founder Richie Moretti is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the adult male turtle, X-rays reveal the extent of Aubie’s found on Oct. 19 by a guest along injuries. CT imagery later confirmed the shoreline of Long Key’s Lime the spear tip had penetrated the turtle’s skull and brain casing.

The reptile was taken in an ambulance to Turtle Hospital by responders Tom Higgins and Taylor Marcialis. There, veterinarian Dr. Terry Norton performed emergency surgery to remove the spear, which X-rays confirmed was lodged deep in the turtle’s skull. The spear tip was saved as evidence for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Law Enforcement team.

Despite every effort by the hospital to save the turtle, a CT scan revealed the spear had penetrated the animal's brain casing, causing irreparable neurological issues. Due to the turtle’s poor prognosis, “Aubie,” named for Auburn University, was humanely euthanized on Oct. 21, according to a social media post on the hospital’s Facebook page.

All species of sea turtles in and around the United States are listed as threatened or endangered. They are protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973 and Florida’s Marine Turtle Protection Act. Those responsible for injuring the turtle may face civil penalties or criminal charges, potentially resulting in large fines and prison time.

“This does not appear to be an accident, as the turtle has an injury in the same location as a previous case of a loggerhead turtle speared in the head,” said Turtle Hospital manager Bette Zirkelbach. “This has the signs of malicious intent.”

pair of nonprofits and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office want to know who struck a pair of feral cats with what appear to be blow darts in Tavernier.

Whiskers & Paws Forever of Monroe County’s Margie Schwartz has spent more than two decades spaying and neutering feral cats throughout Monroe County. Her efforts are mainly focused in the Upper Keys but she won’t say “no” to a cat in need of help.

Such was the case on Oct. 16, when Schwartz received a call regarding two cats that were spotted near a wooded area not far from a Tavernier condominium with darts sticking out of their bodies. Six other sharp-pointed darts of different lengths were scattered on the ground near the cats.

Schwartz said the caller was curious if the cats were being tranquilized for spaying or neutering purposes.

Schwartz quickly responded with an “absolutely not” and sprang into action.

“This is definitely an abuse-type situation,” she said. “As soon as we knew what happened, the police were called. It is a felony. Animal abuse is a felony.”

Schwartz said Denise Rathmayr and Laurie Diaz were able to safely trap one of the cats on Oct. 18. The black cat was transported to veterinarian Kyle Maddox at Marathon’s Keys Veterinary Hospital where a 6- to 8-inch dart was removed from its rear leg. The cat is now rehabbing at Schwartz’s Islamorada residence.

On Oct. 25, the other cat struck

with a blow dart was safely caught. The black and white cat was transported to the veterinary hospital for treatment.

“If the darts would have hit a different spot,” she said, “the cats would have been killed.”

Schwartz added the cats were previously spayed and neutered.

“It’s like adding insult to injury,” she said.

Schwartz and Nicole Navarro, founder of Pawsitive Beginnings Inc. in Key Largo, worked together on a reward for any information leading to the perpetrator’s arrest. Navarro said she was horrified to learn about the act of animal cruelty. More than $1,000 was raised as of Oct. 24.

“As an organization whose mission is to raise awareness on respecting all animals, we are more than happy to come alongside Whiskers & Paws to help circulate this story in hopes that someone will come forward with information so the person(s) harming these cats can be stopped,” Navarro said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating the incident.

he burrowing owl, once a fairly easyto-find bird in the Keys if you knew where to look, could be returning to the Middle Keys with the help of Project Perch.

The tiny bird of prey used to be found in burrows throughout Key Colony Beach, the Florida Keys Country Club and more. However, in recent years, the owls have been missing in action. Loss of habitat from development and flooding, as well as nests collapsed by iguanas, may have led to the removal of space for the owls, which are listed by the state of Florida as “threatened.”

Still, the Key West Wildlife Center and Marathon Wild Bird Center occasionally get calls about a burrowing owl in need of assistance, and Marathon’s center even has a permanently homed owl – Buzz, rescued in 2020 from Coco Plum with a permanently injured wing.

Early in 2023, a Facebook post claiming to have seen a burrowing owl in Key Colony Beach near an old nest spot sparked the interest of local Tammie Anderson, who went to stake out the area and see the bird.

A few days later, the original poster made an update: They had re-sighted the bird, and instead of the elusive burrowing owl, it was a kestrel. But for Anderson, “That was the start.

I fell down the burrowing owl rabbit hole.”

Anderson has worked with chimpanzees, dolphins and sea turtles, but said she was “never a bird person” before. As she researched burrowing owls, she discovered Project Perch, a not-for-profit founded

by Kelly Heffernan with the South Florida Audubon Society in Broward County with the mission to protect burrowing owls and build safe artificial habitats for them.

Anderson reached out to Project Perch and got together with employees of FWC, bird rescue experts including the Wild Bird Center’s Kelly Grinter, and local veterinarian Dr. Doug Mader to find potential locations for artificial owl habitats.

“They need high, dry ground to avoid flooding, as level as we can, and about 18 inches deep,” said Heffernan. “We use a specific Flood Zone-Artificial Burrow System (FZ-ABS) with a PVC entrance to the burrow.

The PVC is cut on the bottom so the owls can get their talons in the dirt. An irrigation box is used for the nesting, with one side removed so that the owls can expand their burrow.”

The hope is that owls will discover and use the artificial nesting sites.

After reviewing several potential locations, Marathon’s Radio Martí site, a government-owned island by Boot Key Harbor known for its radio towers, was chosen as the first location for building the artificial nests.

“Radio Martí is a great spot,” said Grinter.

“It’s a totally undisturbed habitat, the burrow

design helps protect owls from predators, and the owls remove roaches and other big bugs.”

On Oct. 16, 10 new burrows were installed on the island, which will hopefully provide a resting spot for owls and a chance for them to nest in the Keys. Since the owls are on a small island, the team hopes they can stay ahead of issues like iguanas evicting nesting birds, and eventually bring more artificial nests to the Keys.

Flooding is deadly to owlets too, so concerns from flooding and storms must be taken into account when choosing locations.

Heffernan hopes that spreading out habitats for Florida burrowing owls can assist with growing concerns of a lack of genetic diversity in the dwindling owl population. in fans young and old lined the sides of U.S. 1 on Oct. 19 to catch a glimpse of dozens of decked-out cars, trucks, trailers, trolleys and even the Pigeon Key Express processing through the town for Marathon’s 2023 Homecoming parade. Tasked with creating cartoonthemed floats, each class put their own twist on beloved animated characters.

The school’s freshmen opted for a Looney Tunes and Space Jam-inspired creation, while the sophomores put their spin on Winnie the Pooh. Marathon’s junior class played slight spoiler to the seniors, topping the Class of 2024’s “Senior Squarepants” scene with Spongebob and friends with a ScoobyDoo-inspired van and haunted forest.

A halftime ceremony during the Dolphins’ nail-biting football matchup with Gateway Charter the following evening saw seniors Kayesha Christian and Benfriday Makwarawanda crowned as the 2023 homecoming queen and king.

FLORIDA KEYS GEARS UP FOR 2024 ELECTIONS

T

he 2024 election is still more than a year away — Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024 to be exact.

While all American voters will decide the next U.S. president, Florida Keys voters will have some lengthy ballots to peruse as they choose several county and city officials as well.

The 2024 election will be the last one overseen by Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin, who is retiring. Hers is one of the five countywide constitutional offices up for election this year.

Here is a look at some of the offices that will be up for election:

MONROE COUNTY So far, former State Rep. Ron Saunders has filed to run for the supervisor position.

He has received endorsements recently from Sheriff Rick Ramsay and Monroe County Mayor Craig Cates. Key West activist and former Key West city commissioner Margaret Romero has said she plans to file for the supervisor’s race in January.

In addition to the Supervisor of Elections, the seats of Clerk of the Court, Sheriff, Property Appraiser and Tax Collector are up for reelection. The offices of state attorney and public defender are also on the ballot for 2024, according to information posted on the Supervisor of Elections website at keyselections.org.

No one has filed for any of those seats yet, including incumbents and challengers.

Three of the five Monroe County Commission seats are up for reelection in 2024: District 1 Commissioner Craig Cates of Key West, who is currently the county mayor; District 3 Commissioner Jim Scholl of Key West; and District 5 Commissioner Holly Merrill Raschein of Key Largo.

All three county commissioners initially were appointed to the Board of County Commissioners by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to complete other people’s terms.

DeSantis appointed Cates to the District 1 seat in 2019, and he was elected to the seat in November 2020. The District 1 seat was open after Danny Kolhage retired early.

Scholl was appointed to the vacant District 3 seat in April 2022 after Eddie Martinez resigned amid criminal charges in December 2021. Martinez’s term would have ended in 2024.

The governor appointed Raschein to the BOCC in September 2021, and she was elected to the seat in August 2022. The Upper Keys seat had been held by Mike Forster, who died in September 2021 at age 61. Raschein is expected to run for another term.

In other countywide races, two school board seats — Andy Griffiths in District 2 and Mindy Conn in District 3 — are up for reelection.

KEY WEST CITY COMMISSION In Key West, the mayor’s seat is already drawing attention, as Danise “DeeDee” Henriquez, the former Monroe County Tax Collector, has filed to run for mayor.

Mayor Teri Johnston has not confirmed whether she will seek another term. Johnston told the Keys Weekly she will make an announcement on her plans early next year.

“We’re up to our eyeballs in new projects and things for the city of Key West,” Johnston said, adding that she expects several candidates to file for the job. “When I ran for the first time in 2018, I ran against 12 people.”

Three Key West City Commission seats are also up for grabs in 2024. Commissioners Jimmy Weekley, Billy Wardlow and Clayton Lopez are term-limited out, said Griffin.

No one has yet filed to run for any of the commission seats, although there have been murmurings around town about some people considering a Key West run.

ISLAMORADA VILLAGE COUNCIL Islamorada will have all five open seats up for election in 2024. No candidates have officially announced a run yet. The qualifying period for village elections is August 2024.

MARATHON CITY COUNCIL The Marathon City Council will see up to two new faces in 2024, with the seats of current Mayor Luis Gonzalez and Councilman Kenny Matlock up for grabs next November.

Though Gonzalez will term out, Matlock, who won an abbreviated term as the election winner with the fewest votes last November,

has yet to officially decide if he will seek reelection.

Marathon’s lone declared candidate thus far is Kevin Carte, a 17-year grounds manager for the Royal Plum Club Condos and former teacher from West Virginia.

“I feel like regular folks like me, and service industry workers need a voice on council,” he told the Weekly. “I think a big focus of my platform would be that we need to find a way to keep our workers here in Marathon.”

KEY COLONY BEACH Key Colony Beach will see a majority of its City Commission seats open next year, with elections set for the seats held by current Secretary-Treasurer Tom Harding and Commissioner Joey Raspe. Neither has officially declared intent to seek re-election in 2024.

With former Mayor Patti Trefry’s resignation announced earlier this month, the seated commissioners are set to appoint a new commissioner either through a consensus vote or special election in the coming months to fill the final year of Trefry’s term. At the commission’s October meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Beth Ramsay-Vickrey said she hopes the commission will give special consideration to candidates who intend to run and continue in the seat via the 2024 election.

OTHER OFFICES Additional offices that are up for reelection in 2024: • U.S. Sen. Rick Scott.

• U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez.

• State Representative, District 120, currently held by Jim Mooney. Key Wester Michael Travis, who performs in drag as Erika Rose, is running as a Democrat, hoping to unseat Mooney.

• State Senator District 39, currently held

by Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, is up for election.

• Two seats on the Key Largo Wastewater Board.

• Three seats on the Key Largo Fire & Emergency Medical Board.

• Three seats on the Florida Keys Mosquito Control Board.

he event sounded innocuous enough. Motorcycle enthusiasts cruise the Lower Keys for the End of the Road Toy Run, stopping at local bars, restaurants and veterans groups to collect Christmas toys donated for needy children. Motorcycle clubs have held similar charitable toy drives for decades nationwide, including in the Florida Keys.

But this particular ad (in a newspaper other than the Keys Weekly) prompted significant concern from Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay when he learned which biker groups are behind the End of the Road Toy Run, slated for Dec. 2.

The Pagan’s Motorcycle Club and Legend Motorcycle Club, identified in the ad as PMC and LMC, are “listed by the Department of Justice as criminal and outlaw motorcycle gangs,” Ramsay said in a video posted to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. on Oct. 24. (The erroneous apostrophe in Pagan’s is theirs, not ours.)

“At face value, it sounded like something really good,” Ramsay says in the video that had been viewed more than 1,500 times in seven hours.

“But looking closer … both are criminal, outlaw motorcycle gangs involved in crimes involving drugs, guns and violence in our community. We’ve arrested six Pagans in recent years in our county for crimes involving methamphetamine, drugs, guns and violence.

“These are not good, just, upright people,” Ramsay continues in the video. “They’re trying to associate

themselves with good people to get a foothold in our community and make you think they’re good people. But they’re not.”

Past Pagan problems The Keys Weekly last spoke with Sheriff Ramsay about the Pagan’s back in February 2022 about a spate of arrests deputies made over two weeks involving three members of the Pagan’s in the Lower Keys and Key West.

All three suspects had illegal guns, police said. Two of them were prohibited from owning firearms due to prior felony convictions and one was carrying a concealed weapon without a license. All three had drugs — 2 to 12 grams of cocaine each and 4 grams of a crystal-like white powder that the suspect said was “Molly,” slang for the drug MDMA, also called Ecstasy.

The club’s presence in the Lower Keys was nothing new last year, and isn’t new this year despite the current toy drive concern.

In February 2022 Ramsay described the three arrests more as a coincidence than a concerted effort by a biker gang to infiltrate a small community like the Florida Keys.

“All three arrestees (in February 2022) — two of them are Key West locals and one was in town for the Pagan’s annual meeting on Big Pine Key — had guns and drugs on them, which means our guys now treat the group’s members as armed and dangerous,” Ramsay said at the time.

The club has been coming to Big Pine for years for an annual membership meeting.

The 93 new scholars range from grades 6 to 11 and represent nine county schools. The program’s mentors hail from public and private institutions, local businesses and include retired professionals. These mentors will engage in one-on-one sessions on a weekly basis during the school day.

The conversations to come will be life-changing, stars in a cloudy sky,” said John Padget, Monroe County Education Foundation president emeritus.

By pairing students with mentors, providing college scholarships, and supporting them throughout their academic journey, Take Stock in Children Monroe empowers students to achieve their potential and become the leaders of tomorrow. Take Stock Monroe is the flagship program of the Monroe County Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization.

The program aims to foster personal growth, develop self-confidence and build self-advocacy skills in its scholars as they strive to reach their goal of a college education or career certification.

FRED HUNDHAMMER JR. 1934-2023 Fred Hundhammer Jr, age 89, of Marathon, Florida passed peacefully on Oct. 17 in Marathon.

Fred was born Sept. 27, 1934 in Honolulu, Hawai’i to Fred and Oinah Hundhammer. He attended Punahou School and graduated in 1952 with honors, then attended the University of California Berkeley, graduating in 1956 with a degree in finance and economics.

Upon graduation from UC Berkeley, Fred served honorably in the Navy from 1956 to 1964, stationed in San Diego. While in San Diego, Fred met the love of his life, Joan (Boyd) Hundhammer and they were married on August 21, 1957. Fred and Joan lived together in California, New York and Florida as true life partners. They shared many interests together including the theater, boating and travel.

Fred worked as a stock broker for Hambrecht and Quist in San Francisco before transferring to New York. While in New York, Fred and Joan developed their own business and ran it successfully for many years. Upon selling their business, Fred and Joan purchased a boat, completely retrofitted it and made their way down the Inside Passage to Florida. They ducked a hurricane and spent a few nights as guests at the Harbour Cay Club in Marathon, Florida, which would become their adopted home, living aboard their boat for more than 20 years until it was lost in Hurricane Irma.

Fred and Joan both took a keen interest in the Marathon Community Theater, where they worked diligently to provide several excellent productions for the Marathon community over many years. They have inspired many with their insight and humor within the theater community.

Many stories will be remembered by friends and family, but overwhelmingly, Fred will be remembered for his kindness of heart, ingenuity of mind and generous spirit.

Fred was predeceased by his parents Fred and Oinah Hundhammer; and brother John Hundhammer.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Joan Hundhammer; their sons, Paul and his wife Linda, and Mark and his fiancée Sarah; his sister Demetre and her husband Sam Reynolds; his brother Thomas and his wife Kathy; grandchildren Matt, Leslie and Lynne; great-grandchildren Junia and Florence; many nieces and and nephews; and a special pup, Sara.

In full gratitude to caretakers Cira Marquez and Sabrina Lewis for their compassionate support of Fred and Joan for many years.

iana Nyad marked the 10th anniversary of her nearly 111-mile swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West by helping to release a rehabilitated sea turtle back into the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday – from the beach where she completed her epic feat in September 2013.

Nyad and her Cuba swim expedition leader Bonnie Stoll helped release “Rocky,” a 120-pound female green sea turtle that was rehabilitated at the Marathonbased Turtle Hospital, at Key West’s Smathers Beach.

On Labor Day 2013, nearly 2,000 people gathered at the same beach to welcome Nyad as she came ashore after swimming for 52 hours and 54 minutes, becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to the Keys without a shark cage.

Then 64 years old, she succeeded at the grueling Florida Straits crossing on her fifth try, while battling stinging jellyfish, nausea and countless other physical and mental challenges.

“I wish we could have trained Rocky to swim right next to me and eat all the jellyfish that we came upon going across,” said Nyad, referencing green sea turtles’ diet in the wild.

Rocky was rescued in January by Florida Fish & Wildlife officers off Key Largo, after being discovered struggling and unable to dive. At the hospital in Marathon, the turtle required an eight-hour intestinal surgery, breathing treatments and a blood transfusion followed by months of medications and recovery.

“A number of people have brought up that Rocky’s story is similar to my story, but the truth is, I never compare myself to an animal struggling for her life,” Nyad said. “Maybe we shared the will to live and then the will to be strong, but Rocky has a courage that I don’t have.”

After being carried to the water’s edge by Nyad, Stoll and Turtle Hospital personnel, Rocky swam away into her saltwater home as several hundred spectators applauded.

Among them were more than 30 crew members who supported Nyad’s iconic swim and returned to Key West for the weekend’s 10th anniversary celebration.

The Turtle Hospital opened over 36 years ago as the world’s first state-licensed veterinary hospital specializing in sea turtles.

PRESENTS IN PARADISE Two big events that help kids get Christmas

O

ne of the (many) things I love about my wife Sarah is that she is among the kindest and most generous people I’ve ever known. Whether it’s people, animals, or just a good cause, Sarah embodies a generosity of spirit that I admire. A really good example of that is the charity she co-founded 15 years ago, Presents In Paradise.

For the record, I am a member of the Presents board of directors, and I serve with a group of amazing people who care about our community.

From humble beginnings, Presents has grown into a program that assists several hundred local working families each year and provides them a way to make a good Christmas possible. The need is very real: in the 2023 ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Report issued by United Way of Collier and the Keys, 47% of Marathon’s local working families earn below the Monroe County Household Survival Budget. While they play incredibly essential roles in our local economy, most of these workers do not have basic employee protections, such as annual salary, adequate health care coverage and access to other benefits. And no matter how hard they work, the gap between wages earned and monthly expenses (rent, food, clothing, medicine etc.) keeps growing.

When a family can barely make ends meet and pay the monthly bills, it’s easy to see that trying to provide Christmas can inflict a major financial burden. That’s where Presents In Paradise comes in. Presents works with local families to address their particular needs and takes a little of the holiday burden off of these wage earners.

Three big events are happening between this weekend and next, and they’re fun ways you can help Presents In Paradise make Christmas happen. First of all, Friday night, Oct. 27, Havana Jack’s in Key Colony Beach is hosting the Boo Bash, a costume contest and party to benefit Presents In Paradise.

The Boo Bash has turned into a big-time family-friendly fun event every year, and boy, do we have a big party lined up. The Lady A Band will be playing those awesome rock and blues tunes, we’ll have some awesome celebrity judges (including a local newspaper editor who shall remain nameless), and there will be

raffles, food and drink specials and everything else you’ll need for a spooky howlin’ good time. Come in a costume and enter the contest for a chance to win some cool prizes from Havana Jack’s and Glunz Resort. The Boo Bash begins at 7 p.m. Friday night, and the costume contest

will start around 8.

The City of Marathon staff holds an annual costume contest, and your votes will benefit Presents In Paradise. Stop by Marathon City Hall on Halloween between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and cast your votes for the best costume. Votes cost $1, and voting often is encouraged!

Speaking of great times, next Saturday, Nov. 4, the Marathon Elks Lodge will host a fantastic pulled pork dinner and silent auction for Presents. This is our biggest fundraiser, and it’s complete with tasty food and drink, live music, raffles, and a chance to bid on some amazing auction items.

Let’s start with the dinner — if you haven’t tried the Elks Lodge pulled pork, then you really need to stop in. In addition to the fantastic food, there’s live music with the Lady A Band (thanks Agnes and Ric!) and yours truly. There will be raffles and prizes, and we’ll have a wonderful selection of items you can bid on and take home.

The pulled pork dinner begins at 6 p.m., and the combination of food, drink, music and fun will make for a fantastic event. We appreciate your support in helping Presents In Paradise make Christmas possible for our local working families.

As we get into this holiday season, it’s good to remember that it’s better to give than receive — especially when it comes to our local wage earners who make our lives better and easier.

Lately, everything Abbie Sargent touches turns to silver or gold. The hard-working swimmer has dedicated herself to her sport and team and the work has paid off; Sargent won the district championship in the 200 IM and brought home a second gold in the 200 free relay. She went on to earn a pair of silver medals as well, in the 100 breaststroke individual race and the 200 medley relay, and qualified for the next round of competition at regionals in all four events. The relentless junior is not finished competing yet.

“Even with her dominant swims at districts this past Thursday, she is determined to drop time and prove herself even further in our region and at the state level,” head coach Kelly Kater said. For her dedication, effort and continued pursuit of excellence in her sport, Abbie Sargent is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

CORAL SHORES, KEY WEST’S POSTSEASON RUNS CONCLUDE

Coaches already looking forward to next volleyball season

W

hen Marathon and Coral Shores landed in the same playoff bracket last week, it was inevitable that one team’s season would end and one would go on in hopes of making a deep run into districts. Unfortunately for Marathon, the Dolphins were on the losing end of the FHSAA District 16 3A quarterfinal match. The Hurricanes defeated the Fins on Oct. 17, winning all three sets of the match and moving on to the semifinals the following night. There, the third-seeded ’Canes upset Somerset South Homestead, ranked second in the district, 3-1, sending them into the district championship game on Oct. 20 against top-seeded Palmer Trinity.

The road to the championship game was a familiar one for Coral Shores – they played exactly the same trio of teams in the 2022 postseason. The outcomes would be identical, as well. Coral Shores fell to Palmer 3-0, ending the season with a noteworthy 15-10 record.

Hurricanes coach Sam Ovalle had nothing but praise for his hard-working squad.

“I’m so proud of my team.This was a goal of ours from the beginning of the season, to get back to this game and see what happened and we made it back,” he said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get over the hump against a great Palmer team. We didn’t play our best game tonight and they were at the top of their game and it showed.”

Despite the loss, Coral Shores saw fantastic play from senior captain Brooke Mandozzi, who once again led the Lady ’Canes on offense and defense. Mandozzi had seven kills, eight digs, three blocks and a service rating of 3.0 in the game.

“Palmer was really trying to keep the ball away from Brooke all game – you could hear them talking about it,” Ovalle said.

Also stepping up for the ’Canes was Niveah Howard, who appeared on the JV roster until just two weeks ago. Since then, Howard has shown stellar play, leading the team with five blocks against Palmer and scrambling all over the court in a valiant effort to keep the Hurricanes in the game.

“This team has been such a pleasure to coach. I’m going to miss coaching our three seniors so much,” said Ovalle. “Brooke, Crystal (Gutierrez) and Iona (Holmquist) are so special to me and have given so much to the program. They’re amazing players and even better young ladies. … (But) I’m also excited about our future as we have a lot of strong players coming back.”

Key West’s formidable schedule helped them earn the home court advantage in the FHSAA District 16 4A quarterfinals. The Conchs made light work of Miami Killian on Oct. 17, winning in three sets and moving on to the semifinals. There, Key West faced topseeded Gulliver Prep, a perennial powerhouse in prep volleyball.

The Conchs lost 3-0 to the Raiders, a team which went on to win a challenging district and is now ranked first in the regional bracket.

Coach Sara Eckert had nothing but praise for her tenacious team.

“We saw tremendous growth in each player’s individual skills this season,” she said. “Gulliver is a powerhouse and very likely to make a run for the state title this year. It’s unfortunate that we faced them so early in the tournament, but it’s never a bad thing to compete against the best. The hope is for all of the returning players to want it that much more and embrace the challenge to keep developing and reach that same level.”

The Conchs finished the season 8-18 after facing a tough schedule of some of the most talented teams in the state.

‘FAST TIMES’ MEET LIVES UP TO ITS NAME FOR MARATHON Key West’s Makimaa and Marathon’s Vance Bursa crack top five in this week’s competitions

arathon traveled to Miami Country Day to race in the Fast Times meet against a field of nine teams on Oct. 18. The ladies ended up in the middle of the pack in fifth place, while the gentlemen finished in third place overall. Senior Mikkel Ross kept the number one spot for the Lady Fins, finishing the race in 22:57 and in 18th place overall in a field of more than 150 athletes. Behind her were junior Ella Dunn in 23:25 (21st) and senior Rain Banks in 23:51 (23rd). Freshmen Madelyn Thornton, Maeve Merryman and Sara Robinson were fourth through sixth for the Fins, and seventh grader Rebecca Merryman was number seven.

The third-place boys squad saw an unsurprising top three finishers. Vance Bursa finished second overall and first for the Fins in a blazing 16:33.

Younger brother Tony finished 11th overall and second for Marathon in 17:48, a marked improvement from his best times thus far. The oldest Bursa, Jakub, was the third Dolphin to cross the line, in 18:21, good enough for 16th place overall.

Dillon Shelar was next, breaking the 19-minute barrier for the first time. If he can duplicate his 18:56 PR, Marathon will be in great position at districts.

Completing the top seven places for Marathon were Mason Buxton, Allan Taylor and Adrien Holdinga.

Coach Jim Murphy’s team runs deep this season, as Caleb Shelar and Lucian Burns finished within 12 seconds of Holdinga, making the top seven for districts a difficult decision for the veteran coach.

Key West participated in the 305 Classic at the familiar Larry & Penny Thompson park in Miami.

Caylaa Makimaa finished first for the Conchs and fourth overall in a time of 20:16. Naima Thomas was next in 22:09, a personal best by more than 20 seconds. Laira Anaya also recorded a season-best time, clocking in at 23:17 in third place for Key West.

Violet Jangraw, Briana Nodal, Alexa Abad, Mia Steer and Ava Gonzalez rounded out the top finishers for the Lady Conchs. Nodal shaved off nearly a minute from her previous personal best, something quite notable this late in the season. Makimaa and Steer had PRs for the course, which will come in handy at districts, which will be held at the same location. Key West’s boys had a week of rest to help prepare for districts next week.

The Coral Shores boys also attended the 305 Classic to put in some work. Jamie Cary was the first Hurricane to cross the line at 20:51. Nathaniel Shugarman was second in 20:52 and Sean Andrews was third, finishing in 22:12. Taking places four through seven were Connor Daniels, Lochlain James, Tristan Sanchez and Kellan Borbeau. The girls team had the week off to prepare for a final home meet on Oct. 23 before the postseason officially begins.

Key West will use its multirace advantage at Larry & Penny Thompson Park on Nov. 1 at the FHSAA 2A district race. The Conchs will be joined by the Hurricanes for a 5 p.m. girls start while the boys will take their marks at 5:40 p.m. 1A Marathon races at Palmer on Nov. 2, with girls starting at 4:20 p.m. and boys at 5 p.m.

ey West’s record-holding AJ Smith broke even more records at districts this past week, becoming the first district boys double medalist for the Conchs.

With wins in the 50 free and 100 free events, Smith earned an automatic bid to regionals on Saturday, Oct. 28. Smith serves as the anchor for two relay teams, both of which also qualified, making him a very busy swimmer next week as he attempts to become a two-time state qualifier for the southernmost swim team. Smith is ranked first in Region 4 in the 50 and second in the 100.

The Conchs finished fourth in both the boys and girls competitions at the FHSAA District 12 2A championships on Oct. 18. The relay teams fared well in the event, with the 200 medley girls team of Katelyn Noss, Gracie Lechnar, Taylor Gibson and Alyssandra Camargo placing fourth in the event and receiving a bid to regionals. Noss, Lechnar, Camargo and Reeghan Davis teamed up for a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay, which did not quite make the cut for regionals but placed the team in an alternate position should another team be unable to compete.

The 400 free relay team of Noss, Davis, Hadley Bardoni and Megan Fedor placed sixth, advancing to regionals with their time in a fast-paced district. Camargo will be busy next week swimming her relays in addition to the 50 free and 100 free individual events, in which she placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Her times were fast enough to earn at-large bids to the next level of competition.

The boys’ relays were strong as well, advancing the 400 free team of Jeffrey Hoyt, Santiago Gonzalez, Westley Ellerbee and Roan Milelli. The team placed sixth and qualified for an at-large spot via time. Eli Morris, Hugo Blinckmann, Anthony Korzen and AJ Smith placed fourth in the 200 medley relay, advancing to regionals. Hoyt, Milelli, Korzen and Smith also qualified in the 200 free relay, placing fourth at districts.

Gonzalez and Hoyt were given some hope in individual events, with both earning alternate spots in their events.

Gonzalez was 10th in the 200 free and Hoyt placed fifth in the 500 free event.

Coral Shores claimed two district titles of their own at the FHSAA District 12 1A championships on Oct. 21. The Lady ’Canes placed fourth in the competition, advancing all three of their relay teams plus four individuals.

Abbie Sargent was the big winner for the ’Canes, earning a district gold medal in the 200 IM. Sargent earned silver in the 100 breaststroke and qualified as an individual in both events. She went on to earn gold again, this time in the 200 free relay where she teamed up with Layne Smith, Riley Cooper and Allegra Fucaraccio. The same foursome claimed

second in the 200 medley relay, earning silver medals and a bid to regionals in that event. Larkin Dunn, Sophia Figueredo, Rachel Rusch and Lola Young placed fifth in the 400 free relay with a time fast enough to advance to the next level via an at-large bid. Layne Smith placed second in the 200 free and third in the 500 free, giving her four events at regionals.

Fucaraccio qualified in the 200 IM via at-large bid and Figueredo will serve as an alternate in the same event plus the 100 breaststroke should another athlete be unable to compete.

The final individual qualifier for the Lady Canes is Cooper, who will swim at least three events including

her two relays plus the 100 fly. Cooper placed fourth in the event at districts. She also is a long shot to swim a fourth race, the 50 free, in which she is an alternate.

Rusch placed third in her first year of competitive diving but was just under the qualifying score for regionals.

Four athletes on the boys team qualified for regional competition and will join the girls in Fort Lauderdale. The 400 free relay team of Patrick O’Donnell, Anthony Jeffry, Evan Osipov and Mason Osipov placed fifth and qualified for an at-large appearance. The same team took sixth in the 200 free and are the alternate team at regionals. O’Donnell is the lone individual competitor for Coral Shores. He placed fourth in the 200 IM and 500 free and will represent the ’Canes at the next level.

Key West will take on the rest of FHSAA’s 2A Region 4 athletes on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Stuart at the Sailfish Splash. Events begin at 10 a.m. 1A Coral Shores dives in on Friday, Oct. 27 at the Nova Southeastern University Aquatics Complex, also beginning at 10 a.m. Swimmers who manage to make the cut for the big show have just one week after regionals to prepare. This year’s state meet will take place in Ocala at the Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training Center, on Nov. 3 for Key West and Nov. 4 for Coral Shores.

SUGARLOAF CLAIMS CONCH CUP VOLLEYBALL TITLE Sharks defeat longtime rival Basilica School

ct. 21 was a day to remember for the girls and coaches of the Sugarloaf Middle School varsity volleyball team, as the Sharks defeated longtime rival and perennial tournament winner Basilica School in the 2023 Conch Cup. “We wanted to win this tournament so badly,” said assistant coach Jerry Harbin. “Basilica wins this tournament every year, so we really wanted to come home with a victory.”

The varsity Lady Sharks began the day playing Key Largo School, defeating the Tornadoes in a 2-0 match. Next up was a match against Horace O’Bryant School. The Sharks also beat the Buccaneers 2-0. Feeling confident from their previous matches, Sugarloaf set out to play the Basilica School but the Lady Sharks didn’t start off so well, dropping their first set of the tournament.

“Coach Jerry and I had a heart-to-heart with (the team) after that first loss,” said head coach Jen Alexander. “We knew they had to get their heads on straight if they wanted to pull it off.”

The second set began and the Sharks emerged victorious, tying the score 1-1 and forcing a 15-point final set – in tournament play, normal sets are played to 25 points. A back-and-forth affair came down to a 15-15 tie, with one team needing to pull ahead by two points. Basilica scored to go up 16-15, followed by an answer from the Sharks to tie the set 16-16. Starting with a serve from eighth grader Mavis Bishop, the Sharks took a 17-16 lead, with the final point for Sugarloaf coming off an aced serve from Bishop to put the Sharks ahead for good, 18-16.

“My heart was racing during that last game,” said Alexander, who said there “wasn’t a dry eye on the court” after the win. “I kept trying to inspire them during each time out, letting them know they could do it if they really wanted it badly enough. I am so proud of each and every one of them, and I love coaching them so much.”

MARATHON HOMECOMING COMEBACK STALLS ON FINAL DRIVE Coral Shores picks up dominant road win

arathon football always draws a good crowd, and last week’s homecoming celebration packed the bleachers even more. The Fins’ original opponent bowed out weeks into the season, forcing them to scramble for a team to play on short notice. Gateway Prep out of Fort Myers stepped up and traveled all the way to Marathon to give the Dolphins a homecoming game to remember. Although the Fins came up short in the final moments of the game, the hard-fought contest was a good matchup and gave fans a reason to stay in their seats until the final whistle.

Marathon struck in the opening drive of the game off a Braulio Garcia power run. Fabbianho Louis Jeune added the extra point for the Fins, giving the home team hope for a homecoming win.

The Griffins then seemingly recovered from their long trip, scoring on back-to-back drives while holding the Dolphins on defense. But without a kicker, Gateway was not able to convert on their extra point attempts, making the score 7-12.

The Griffins were driving again when Yemcel Garcia enlivened the Dolphins with an interception, turning the ball over to Marathon with just over 30 seconds left in the half. Marathon could not capitalize on the opportunity and the score stood at halftime.

After halftime, the Griffins picked up some momentum, scoring a pair of quick touchdowns to pull ahead 24-7. Marathon found their groove and answered back with another Braulio Garcia touchdown run after a long Josh Wall run to close the gap. With the score at 24-14, Marathon’s defense dug deep to close out the Griffins in the second half.

A Carlos Lezcano 8-yard run put the Fins within reach of a win, and they went on the march, but a grounded snap and a fumble in the final moments of the game ended the hopes for Marathon to come from behind. As the buzzer sounded, the score was 24-21 with the Griffins picking up a road win.

“We are a young team and we have to learn how to win,” said Marathon coach Sean McDonald. “Friday night was an important lesson on how to get there. We need to play with the same intensity as we did in the second half for four entire quarters in order to win games. The team fought hard, but we just ran out of time.”

Up next for the Fins is a star-studded Palmer Trinity at home on Oct. 26 before a trip to Somerset South Homestead the following week to cap off their season.

a resounding victory against Tradition Prep out of Port St. Lucie on Oct. 19. The ‘Canes made the three-hour trip to play the Pirates on their homecoming and senior night celebration.

“We executed well in a festive atmosphere,” Coral Shores coach Ed Holly said.

“It was a much closer game than the score dictated.”

That score, 51-19 in favor of the Hurricanes, spoiled the fun for Tradition Prep and gave Coral Shores their fourth victory of the season.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard on their first drive, but Dantay Diorio had a quick answer, scoring on a 62-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 14-7 in the Hurricanes’ favor.

RJ Dube blocked a punt on an ensuing Tradition Prep drive, giving the ‘Canes the momentum. AJ Putetti scored a 9-yard TD, and a missed extra point made the score 20-7 at the beginning of quarter two. A Jamoris Davis fumble recovery and strong play on both sides capped off the first half.

After halftime, Dantay Diorio carried the ball in for a 43-yard touchdown run.

went for 2 instead of kicking an extra point, something unusual for Holly under such conditions.

As it turns out, there was a perfectly valid explanation. “At their field, when an extra point was good, the ball landed in a swamp with alligators,” Holly said. “I only had three balls to lose, so we had to go for 2.”

Putetti added another nine-yard run and Diorio carried it in for another 2-point conversion at the end of the third quarter, giving the Hurricanes a 36-7 lead.

Quarter four included a long touchdown pass from the Pirates, and bolstered by their energetic crowd, Tradition Prep was driving again. Isaac Holmes put an end to that, intercepting the ball before adding a 30yard touchdown run of his own. Holmes had a second 18-yard TD late in the game, and the Pirates added six on their final possession, making the final score 51-19.

Holmes has been filling in for starting quarterback Yemcel Moreno, who is out with a knee injury. Moreno’s return this season is uncertain, but Holly is hopeful and praised his attitude and leadership from the sidelines. He also had praise for Xico Reynoso, who held the line on both sides of the ball, and for Davis and Eddie Holly on defense. The younger Holly had 15 tackles.

The Hurricanes play Somerset South Homestead on Oct. 27 at home, a team whose running back Holly described as “dynamic” and “legitimate.” Their final game will be a conference playoff contest against the winner of the Archbishop Carroll/Ransom Everglades game the following Thursday night at Harris Park in Homestead.

Key West worked on some fine-tuning and recovery from nagging injuries in their bye week. They will enjoy homecoming on Oct. 27 against Gateway High School out of Fort Myers.

The Conchs’ final regular season game will be the following week in Ft. Lauderdale against undefeated Archbishop McCarthy.

Top spots continue to shift in boys and girls competitions

eys golfers decided to meet in the middle for nine more holes of local competition before heading to their respective district tournaments. On Oct. 16, Marathon’s Summer Haines had the low score on her home course with one of the largest margins of victory seen in match play this season.

Haines won the contest with 44 strokes, parring on four holes and gaining some confidence prior to her final district competition, in which she hopes to make it to the next level for the first time in her career.

Also hoping to cap off her season in style is Coral Shores junior Gabby Thomas. Thomas shot a 51 in her final regular season round and has all the skills necessary to advance. Key West’s Claudia Steling was two strokes behind Thomas after a stellar start. Steling, just a sophomore, birdied on hole 1, then had some trouble later in the course, placing her third in the match. Like Haines and Thomas, Steling has what it takes to make it to regionals this season if she plays a solid game. Key West’s Lexi Finigan and Marathon’s Makenna Haines, both freshmen, placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

GOLFERS PUT IN AN EXTRA NINE BEFORE DISTRICTS

Marathon’s Michael Merryman was the boys’ winner, shooting a 39 in his final home match. The senior birdied on hole 4, then shot an eagle on 7, winning the event by four strokes. Key West Junior Andrew Bassett came in second place, followed by freshman Roco Piscetello of Marathon and senior Ryan Kight of Key West, who tied for third with 44s.

Junior Conch Peyton Zubieta scored a 46, good enough for fifth place in the match. Zubieta earned two birdies and an eagle in the round, but a few tough holes mixed in tarnished what would otherwise have been a phenomenal game. Marathon sophomore Dylan Ziels, seventh grader Emmett Merryman and junior Leo Mendez were sixth through eighth, Key West’s Ty Hill was ninth and Mason Thornton of Marathon was 10th.

The top golfers for Coral Shores were Brock Bynum and Derek Ramos, who tied Key West’s Smith Switzer for the 11th spot. Just as with the girls this season, a coveted round at regionals is within grasp of all of the Keys’ top male golfers. It will come down to perseverance, solid play and a bit of luck.
