A

project to replace roughly 4 miles of aged water pipe in Islamorada is two months ahead of schedule.

Since April, crews have worked around the clock Monday through Friday to install more than 18,500 feet of new 36-inch water main from MM 79.5 on Tea Table Key to MM 82. The pipe installation and traffic pattern changes will continue as workers approach the Whale Harbor bridge at MM 84.

“We never expected to move at this type of rate,” said Greg Veliz, FKAA executive director. “The traffic has been far better than we could have anticipated.”

Crews installed a 42-inch water main underwater at Tea Table crossing to prevent wear-and-tear from any future high winds and storm surge.

Transmission line at Whale Harbor Channel will also be placed underwater as a protective measure against the elements.

A $42-million pipe replacement project in Islamorada kicks off a gargantuan effort by FKAA to replace 150 miles of 40-year-old transmission lines.

Veliz said the agency will continue to place new transmission from the Whale Harbor crossing to Plantation Key. Veliz said the next replacement project will address one of the most compromised sections of pipe due to tidal flows.

Last March, a series of breaks occurred across from Postcard Inn Beach Resort & Marina. The breaks were eventually fixed, but water pressure remained low from Islamorada south to Key West.

“We know this is a bad stretch,” Veliz said.

nside a Hillsborough County courthouse, state attorneys, public defenders, sheriffs and residents provided three hours of testimony to a committee tasked with recommending whether Florida’s 20 circuit courts should be consolidated.

A final public hearing on Oct. 13 heard many in-person and Zoom speakers pointing to overwhelming evidence of survey results the 14-person Judicial Circuit Assessment Committee (JCAC) received from 5,000 law professionals and 2,000 residents urging them not to support or recommend combining the circuit courts. Many believed the move wouldn’t provide any noticeable taxpayers savings, nor would it bring efficiencies to the court system.

Roughly 74% of the surveys filled out by the public came from Monroe County residents. And that wasn’t an anomaly, Monroe County Attorney Bob Shillinger said to the JCAC at the public hearing. Shillinger’s comments alluded to remarks by Naples-based attorney Laird Lile at a Sept. 15 meeting regarding the large number of surveys from the southernmost county.

“We did public outreach,” Shillinger explained. “We see it as a threat to our way of life. If you have any doubt of

the level of opposition or sincerity, I invite you to hold a hearing in Monroe County.”

In July, the JCAC convened after Republican Speaker Paul Renner wrote to Chief Justice Carlos Muñiz stating that the current circuit boundaries haven’t changed since 1969. Renner specifically noted the size difference between the 2.7 million residents in Miami-Dade County’s 11th Circuit and the fewer than 100,000 people in Monroe County’s 16th Circuit Court.

Renner believed consolidation could lead to greater efficiencies and more uniformity in the judicial process.

It’s something the JCAC is currently examining as members work to submit a final report by Dec. 1. Judge Jonathan Gerber, of the 4th District Court of Appeal, is the Judicial Consolidation Assessment Committee chair. The 14-person committee doesn’t have a representative from Monroe County’s 16th Circuit Court.

Shillinger was joined at the public hearing in Tampa by Monroe County State Attorney Dennis Ward and Monroe County Mayor Craig Cates, who was first to speak among the Keys contingent. Cates said he traveled to Tampa to express the county’s strong opposition to any merger with the larger neighboring 11th Circuit.

“While consolidating smaller courts into larger circuits might make sense in practice, it will spell disaster for the protection of the Florida Keys,” Cates said.

onroe County commissioners can make all the plans and promises they want to alleviate the affordability crisis in the Florida Keys, as the rental market only continues to rise and workers struggle to stay.

But the five-member panel doesn’t have the authority to grab just any budget line and switch it to a workforce housing fund.

The latest idea: spend $25 million in surplus revenue the Monroe County Tourist Development Council raked in between 2020-2022 to house workers in the service and hospitality industries.

“We could really make a difference and build some workforce housing,” said County Commissioner Michelle Lincoln, of Marathon.

Lincoln believes it’s the right move for the Keys. “We’re not taking money out of the budget for advertising,” Lincoln said. “And it’s not asking for any more money. We’re not asking to increase a penny sales tax.”

The agenda for Wednesday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting, scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at the Marathon Government Center, once again included the TDC surplus.

The commission was set to take a vote on whether to lobby state lawmakers to craft a way for Monroe to use the surplus for something that’s not on the books.

“We’re asking the state if we could use that to fund workforce housing that especially benefits people in the service and hospitality industries,” Lincoln said.

Long-term rentals in the Keys have become harder to find, let alone afford on average local wages.

Fair market rents for 2024 determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for Monroe County are $1,556 for a studio, $1,730 for a one-bedroom apartment and $2,139 for a two-bedroom.

But in reality, a studio apartment in Key West can easily run more than $2,000 per month and a 646-squarefoot one-bedroom at Ocean Walk apartments was starting at $2,781

per month at press time, while a room in a two-bedroom apartment, with a shared bathroom, on Duval Street was listed for $1,500 on Craigslist.

Lincoln is on the Florida Association of Counties, which she said will likely take a vote on the TDC tax surplus spending option idea in November.

Florida law restricts how counties spend the TDC tax money. Elected officials can’t just tap into it for any project, such as rental housing designed to stick to fair market rates or reserved for people with lower than average incomes.

“We have to follow the state statute language as it’s written,” TDC director Stacey Mitchell told the Keys Weekly on Oct. 17.

The Keys scored that bonus $25 million from unprecedented tourism numbers for fiscal years ending in 2021 and 2022. It’s from the total four-cent “bed tax” collected on every dollar spent at hotels and lodging establishments across the 120-mile island chain.

The excess in TDC tax collections ran far over its forecasted budget due to the equally unprecedented number of tourists who poured into the Keys when the COVID-19 pandemic prompted other states, cities and countries to enforce shutdowns as part of safety measures.

Florida was one of the few top destination spots that remained open during a long stretch of the first 18 months of the pandemic. “We had zero competition,” Mitchell said.

The TDC, an advisory committee for the county commission, uses bed tax revenues to advertise the Keys, promote the largest events and for large building projects that boost tourism.

Commissioners have essentially frozen the line item for special public facilities capital projects. “They voted to defer accepting applications for the use of these surplus funds until after the 2024 legislative session,” Mitchell said.

art of Mike Forster’s ashes are scattered at the source of the Nile River in Uganda. The county commissioner personally expressed this wish for his final resting place to his good friend, Pastor Tony Hammon, during a 2016 trip to the country.

Did he know how soon he was to pass? One likes to think not. The former Islamorada councilman — who was widely known for his acts of generosity, such as giving away meals after Hurricane Irma — died from COVID at age 60 in 2021.

But his life certainly serves as a testament to the spirit of “Be Like Mike”

week, the now-annual initiative sponsored by the United Way of Collier and the Keys to honor Forster’s memory and inspire others to give back to the community that he loved so much.

And, in full transparency, a few days before he passed, he even gave this reporter a whole Key lime pie as a gift after an interview at his restaurant, Mangrove Mike’s, shoving it into our hands despite our protestations.

Forster and Hammon, who is a pastor at Island Community Church, visited the head of the Nile in the East African nation of Uganda during one of their four trips together. At that spot, which is located at the top of Lake Victoria, stands a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The champion of peace is famous for this quote: “Our greatest ability as

humans is not to change the world, but to change ourselves.”

To be clear, “Mangrove Mike” wasn’t perfect — like the rest of us, he had his peccadilloes.

“We’d still be guys and banter and kid each other,” Hammon said. But during their Uganda trips, he recalled, “I watched Mike go from ‘being Mike’ to being amazingly kind and generous.”

Hammon said the beginnings of their relationship were not so positive.

“We opposed one another on political issues. I thought, ‘Wow. We are not starting well.’”

But when Forster became his nextdoor neighbor, the two became close.

“We developed a deep friendship and love beyond anything political,” Hammon said. “Mike began to see pictures of my Uganda missions around 2011. He said, ‘I wanna go.’ … Next thing I knew, we were planning a trip together.”

Forster’s heart was for the Ugan-

dan children, said Hammon. “No ifs, ands or buts about it. He probably would have brought back 100 kids in his luggage if he could have.”

CBT Construction general manager Matt Turk knew Forster, though not as well as Hammon. However, much like Forster, Turk felt a “tug” to join the pastor’s trips and did so this past June.

Turk described days of nonstop activity, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., during the 10-day mission, visiting locations that are part of a network of connections Hammon has made through his work with the International Association of Christian Colleges and Schools.

“The big part was to identify good stewardship,” Turk said. “We traveled to different schools. We visited with teachers and spent time with the kids.”

They even distributed cows to provide a cost-efficient way to give orphans milk.

WILL A COUNCIL PAY QUESTION HEAD TO 2024 BALLOT?

Voters in Islamorada could have the final say on whether compensation should increase for council members who are elected to seats in November 2024. There are questions, however, whether a recent vote by the dais will allow it to move forward.

At an Oct. 10 meeting, the council voted 3-2 on an ordinance’s second reading to send the question of upping

the dais’ pay to $2,000 a month to next year’s ballot. The ordinance’s first reading was approved on Sept. 29 via 4-1 vote. Per the village charter, the council needs four affirmative votes to provide for an increase by ordinance.

The Keys Weekly reached out to the village clerk’s office to confirm whether the Oct. 10 vote was sufficient to send the question to the ballot next year. No response was received before press time.

An original proposal by Councilwoman Elizabeth Jolin at a Sept. 29 meeting sought to ask voters whether they’d support a $3,000-a-month paycheck for the next council. In her statements, she said raising the pay could bring a diverse group of candidates. It would also give village voters dissatisfied with the current state of affairs the ability to pay someone better to run for office, she said. Council members are currently paid $1,000 a month, or

$12,000 a year.

Vice Mayor Sharon Mahoney and Councilman Mark Gregg voted against the ordinance’s second reading. Gregg, who was the lone “no” vote on the ordinance’s first reading at the Sept. 29 meeting, alluded to a similar effort to raise council pay that was shut down by 75% of the voters at the November 2022 election.

JUDICIAL CONSOLIDATION FROM PAGE 5 Ward told the JCAC the smallest circuit in the state runs a “pretty good show.” While the court system has a population size under 100,000, he said the southernmost courts serve more than 5 million visitors in addition to locals.

“When I first first heard about this, I asked, ‘Why are we doing this?

What’s the purpose here?’ There’s been different responses and after listening to them, I find it’s not necessary,” Ward said.

Shillinger added the last six election cycles in the Keys have seen a contested race for state attorney. He said the county would lose accountability and representation if the 11th and 16th circuit courts combined.

Retired Judge Gerardo Castiello spent more than a decade hearing compensation claims in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. He discussed a project to land a third district of appeals judge in the Keys so residents didn’t have to travel hours to MiamiDade.

“Folks in Monroe County were not properly served and I stopped

that,” he said. “We’re not sending folks to Dade; it does not work for them.”

Keys resident Alberto Gonzalez also made the trek to the courthouse to share his thoughts. He said votes from registered Keys voters, including himself, would never count again if the 16th circuit court went away.

“This has nothing to do with consolidating courts,” he said. “It’s a political move to prevent certain state attorneys from being elected, and we’re just collateral damage.”

Appearing on Zoom, Islamorada Councilman Mark Gregg said the Keys do not have a wide turnpike or bustling downtowns. Rather, the Keys have the Everglades and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in its backyard.

“We are unique geographically from the 11th district,” he said. “And we’d be incompatible with their (Miami-Dade’s) way of administering justice.”

Some commenters believed court consolidations could bring a more uniform technology system.

Not only that, it could also expand the jury pool for smaller counties whose residents are picked more frequently for jury duty. Kansas Gooden, a Miami-based attorney, said consolidations could address caseload disparities and availability of hearing times in some circuits.

Many sheriffs and state attorneys across the state, however, believed consolidations wouldn’t create posi-

tive change. Jack Campbell, Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association president, said he’s never seen state attorneys and public defenders so united on an issue.

“It’s time for a JOA (judgment of acquittal). In any other case we’d lose this case for lack of evidence,” he said.

The JCAC will meet three times in November to develop, review and finalize findings and recommendations.

MARK BELILE 1965-2023

M

ark Belile, 58, passed peacefully on Sept. 30 surrounded by family and friends at his Marathon home after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. The service is planned for Nov. 11, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Martin Luther Chapel in Marathon.

Mark was born in Key West on Feb. 9, 1965. He is predeceased by his parents Judy Butler Belile and Duane Belile of Key West, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Sprinkle Belile of Marathon and his sister Rhonda Donnelly of Key West. He is also survived by his three sons: Travis Belile (Zoey Winemiller), 23, of Key West and his grandson Travis Walker Belile; his son Mark Belile, 7, of Marathon; and his son-of-the-heart Charles “Jack” Jamison (Rubi Jamison), 29, of Tallahassee, and their daughter Luna Jamison.

He is also survived by his stepmother Bernice Belile of New York.

Mark was a decorated law enforcement officer, having served an entire career with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office of the Florida Keys — with the exception of his time in the U.S. Army from 1984 to 1988. He was employed by the Sheriff’s Office from 1989 to 2022 and has 16 letters of commendation during his tenure as a corrections officer. After his retirement, he applied to become a reserve deputy with the Sheriff’s Office.

Mark’s wife, Charlene Sprinkle Belile, is a lieutenant in the Islamorada District. Travis Belile, 22, followed in his father’s footsteps to also become a corrections officer in Key West.

Belile had a long history of community service, including his dedication to the Boy Scouts organization. He loved his family, road trips, concerts, dogs, Germany and Oktoberfest. Oh, and dominoes. After the service on Nov. 11, Mark’s friends are invited to have a game in his memory at Overseas Lounge.

In lieu of flowers, the Belile family asks that donations be made to his son Mark’s education fund: Keys Kids Savings Mark E. Belile II account at Keys Federal Credit Union.

n Oct. 14, coaches and players from the Coral Shores football team helped clean up an elderly couple’s house in Plantation Key Colony that was in need of some tender loving care. In a report by Lisa Tennyson, the county director of legislative affairs, 10 major Keys issues made the priority list, including, “Support legislation to expand the eligible uses for Tourist Development Tax-generated funds to include affordable/workforce housing for tourism sectors’ workers.”

It’s tagged as “tourism workforce housing,” in the report.

“We’re not sure if the entire state’s going to be behind us,” Lincoln said.

“We’re definitely ready to stand alone on this one.”

Many urgent goals in 2024 The TDC surplus is one of three legislative priorities related to the housing crisis that county staff has compiled, including supporting local governments’ efforts to alleviate housing costs.

The report recommends the county support legislation to enable local governments to offer property tax relief for landlords who “voluntarily rent affordably.”

A property tax break could save long-term rentals from turning into vacation rentals.

But Monroe County’s top priority remains environmental protection, namely to secure $25 million through the Florida Keys Stewardship Act: $20 million for water quality projects and $5 million for land acquisition.

“The county utilizes its share of Stewardship funding for the canal restoration program,” according to the staff report.

The priority list also includes funding for raising roads, addressing marine issues such as mooring fields and removing derelict vessels, and protecting the Rate of Growth Ordinance from possible state preemption.

Most of Monroe’s legislative goals are incremental “and focused on issues that are built upon over several sessions, such as our water quality and land acquisition needs, the importance of wind insurance affordability, and protection of grandfathered vacation rental regulations,” the report states.

MORE THAN $100,000 RAISED FOR LOCAL HEALTH CLINIC

C

ontestants vying for the 2023 Big Kahuna raised more than $120,000 for Good Health Clinic, a Florida Keys health care provider for the low-income and uninsured. When all was said and done, the team of Heather Pabotoy and Emily Strain came away with the heavy wooden trophy, which was presented to them at the annual Luau for Health on Oct. 14 at Key Largo’s Dolphins Plus Bayside. The real estate agents with Coldwell Banker Schmitt raised more than $40,000. Kate Banick, GHC executive director, said the event was “super successful” with some of the best fundraisers so far put on by contestants. Funds support the clinic’s day-today operations.

n the Upper Keys, expect to cross paths with some real doers. They’re the ones who go above and beyond to assist the Upper Keys’ close community and its members in times of need. Those who give their time and resources for the greater good deserve to go noticed. Three finalists enter for best volunteer in this year’s Best of Upper Keys. They’re all deserving of the honors, and so are the many others in the community. The Keys Weekly asked these superheroes for a little insight into what drives their volunteerism.

Owner and office manager, Vital Signs, and, part-time customer service representative, Island Hammock Hospital Volunteer with SaveA-Turtle Florida Keys, Key Largo Community Preservation Foundation, Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center and Island Dolphin Care She thrives under the pressure and the craze that comes with any situation. Call her “Captain Chaos.” Without hesitation, she’d call upon Mr. Rogers as her sidekick during important missions.

“His programming really impacted my life and my outlook on what it means to thrive as a community,” she said. Her efforts aren’t done alone, but rather with a group of people dedicated to serving their neighbors. She’s particularly proud of the inaugural Earth Day celebration put on by the Key Largo Community Preservation Foundation, of which she now serves as the chair.

“In 2023, I decided that I wanted to make sure that event was established during my tenure so that our community may enjoy it for years to come,” she said.

Volunteering, to Sanders, means bringing people together. She said spending time with the community has given her the chance to meet many people with diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives.

“Volunteering opens so many doors to bring people from all walks of life together for a common goal and I think that’s a beautiful opportunity. No matter politics, race, religion, etc., people can find common ground and work together,” she said.

Sidekick Gary Falleur, aka “Woobie,” is her rock — nothing happens without his efforts behind the scenes.

Following Hurricane Irma, Miss Marvel and her sidekick sprang into action, checking homes, properties and feral cats from those concerned residents who evacuated the area.

“When power was lost, some only had cell phones to keep contact. My sidekick and I went to homes to take photos and give updates to those that had evacuated,” she said.

Volunteering is Martin’s way of carrying the values acquired from her mom and dad.

“Each event they are with me in my heart to set goals and make them proud. I cannot put into words the feeling of presenting checks to children so appreciative that you would think $1,000 was a million dollars in their eyes, the look of rescued animals in their ‘furever’ homes and the faces of those that cherish the moment when their loved ones are recognized at Fight Cancer events.”

Accounting manager, Florida Keys Electric Cooperative Volunteer with Florida Keys Children’s Shelter, Take Stock in Children (mentor), Guardian ad Litem, Key Largo Rotary (president) and Coral Shores’ Interact Club She’s known as “Lady Yes,” the one who tries to save the day when there’s a call for assistance, especially if it involves children.

Sidekick Maryana, her daughter, stands by her side as her mom shows what it means to give back to a tight-knit community. Arrabal doesn’t take sole credit for swooping in and getting the job done; her undertakings involve a team effort. For example, the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter’s need for new mattresses prompted a Facebook post by Arrabal to raise money. In one day, funds were secured to buy 19 new mattresses.

“The saying ‘It takes a village’ is one that comes to mind for me. We need to take care of our own,” Arrabal said. “I was born here, graduated from Coral Shores, and have worked for FKEC for 20 years. This community does so much, and I am so proud to be a small part of it.”

If she had unlimited funds, Arrabal said she would purchase property and build a transitional living home for the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter in the Upper Keys.

I have a big Jasper fox update. I mean, huge. Last week, we headed down to Key West to meet our veterinarian team, Dr. Doug Mader and Dr. Geraldine Diethelm, for what was supposed to be a surgery to amputate Jasper’s toe where the cancerous tumor was removed seven weeks ago. Once Jasper was sedated and prepped for surgery, Mader inspected the toe that was to be removed and discovered that it looked perfect. As in, no swelling, no sign of a new tumor, perfect.

It was then that Mader gave my mom the option of canceling the surgery and

alleviating the stress of an uncomfortable recovery for Jasper. After discussing all of the specifics, everyone there agreed to let Jasper keep his toe and just monitor his health and behavior for now.

Mader performed a fine needle aspiration of the lymph node behind Jasper’s knee on the same leg where the tumor was as that lymph node was swollen. Those samples were sent off for a priority pathology exam and the results came back late in the day on Friday and guess what? No cancer cells were present. Basically that means either all of the cancer was removed with the tumor or the cancer has not started to spread, which is good news all the way around.

Mom has also started working with a woman named Lisa St. John who owns a company called WHOLEify.

St. John is an animal naturopath and iridologist who specializes in holistic equine and canine cellular regeneration and detoxification. Jasper now has a specialized formula of healing foods and herbal formulations to boost his immune system and aid in the removal of toxins while supporting cellular regeneration and deep tissue healing.

LIFE JACKETS SAVE LIVES ONLY IF THEY ARE WORN

A

recent boating incident in Islamorada highlights the importance of wearing a life jacket. A 22-foot boat with four passengers capsized in Snake Creek, located near Islamorada.

Luckily, the boaters were wearing life jackets and were rescued. They all are okay, but that unfortunately isn’t always the case.

In the most recent U.S. Coast Guard boating statistics, 85% of the people who died in a boating incident drowned because they weren’t wearing a life jacket. Many of these people considered themselves long-term boaters who knew how to swim, but if knocked unconscious when enter-

ing the water, it can be impossible to swim. You wouldn’t try to put a seatbelt on in the middle of a car crash.

Likewise, it is not possible to try to put on a life jacket when you are in the middle of a boating emergency.

Whenever you’re on a boat, make sure to always wear a life jacket. If you need to borrow one, check out the Sea Tow Foundation’s Life Jacket Loaner Stations. You never know just how life-saving a life jacket could be.

Council’s Oct. 10 meeting lasted a little more than two hours after members worked through a few discussion items and approved an ordinance and resolutions. The dais officially moved to a Tuesday-Thursday meeting schedule this month in a bid to reduce the 5-to6-hour meetings witnessed over the past several months. The dais didn’t meet Oct. 12 since all action items were addressed two days prior.

Toward the end of the meeting, the dais discussed the next steps in the village manager hiring process. Council members were expected to present a list of preferred candidates for interviews to the village clerk by Oct. 25. From there, the dais is expected to interview eight to 10 candidates via Zoom at a public meeting sometime mid-November.

In other matters, Councilman Henry Rosenthal suggested the village increase its holiday decorations by providing $50,000 more this year. It would

be an increase from the $105,000 allocated in the 2023-24 budget for the holidays. Decorations and lights during previous holidays were installed

“We are the only place outside Key West to celebrate Christmas to that extent. Was it worth it? Absolutely. No question in my mind,” Rosenthal said.

Some council members didn’t support more money for additional decorations. Councilwoman Elizabeth Jolin suggested lights be redistributed in places such as Southwinds Park where trees used to be lit.

“It would be more bang for our buck,” she said.

A.J. Engelmeyer, public works director, told the dais more lights will be placed in front of Founders Park for the upcoming holiday season.

The council will have its next meeting Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Founders Park Community Center.

REAL-LIFE AQUAMAN SANCTUARY RECOGNIZES VOLUNTEER WHO MADE A BOATLOAD OF BUOY LINES

I

n the most recent fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, more than 350 volunteers logged 2,826 hours of service to Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) — numbers that rival pre-pandemic totals.

There are volunteers and then there is Terry Helmers, the sanctuary’s MVP of lending time and talent (that’s MVP for Marine Volunteer Personified).

The 70-year-old retired IT administrator just completed fabrication of more than 30 buoy downlines that are being attached to new anchors in the sanctuary’s rapidly-expanding network of mooring buoys.

“Buoys are appealing for me,” Helmers said, “When you get all done putting a buoy in, just as you’re leaving, a boat with a family pulls up and ties up to your brand-new buoy. ‘I did that.

You can enjoy that buoy because I did that.’”

Helmers’ near-lifetime of public service began in 1986, when the Miami native reached out to Biscayne National Park because he “wanted to start diving and boating for a reason — a purpose — instead of just wandering around.” At that time he was in the early years of an IT career at the University of Miami, his alma mater, when Biscayne brought him on to volunteer with shipwreck history, and he was able to spread out his four weeks of annual leave from UM to be available for nearly one weekday, in addition to weekend work. In 1999, when the park moved into the mooring buoy business, the star volunteer was tapped to establish that program.

Fast forward to 2019 when Helmers and his wife retired to Key Largo, where he walked into the nearby sanctuary office of maritime archaeologist Matt Lawrence with information about the Totten Beacons at Biscayne National Park, part of the system of historic navigation aids that stretches all the way to Key West “Even more impressive was the work that he had done to search Miami newspapers to compile stories on maritime heritage,” said Lawrence. “I thought, ‘This guy is committed. He’s exceptional and there’s nothing that he’s not willing to take part in to further the sanctuary’s mission.’”

Helmers was already certified as a National Parks Service diver when he joined the sanctuary, but Lawrence quickly got his new volunteer on track to be certified under the NOAA diving protocols. That made him even more valuable.

“If you’re a diver and you’re in this building, somewhere along the line you’re gonna do buoy work,” Helmers said.

The sanctuary maintains one of the largest buoy systems anywhere, which places a premium on the human resources needed to maintain it.

“With legendary underwater skills, it is no exaggeration to say that Terry Helmers is a real-life Aquaman,” said Brady Booton, buoy team leader. “Terry’s overall contribution has literally made all of the difference in helping to ensure that the majority of the Upper Keys marine community’s favorite sites have buoys on them. He has proven to be an invaluable resource for the sanctuary and we are so thankful for his volunteer time.”

Helmers has logged nearly 800 hours with the sanctuary, underscoring the vital role of volunteers in its mission. “Our volunteers are an amazing group of passionate people with diverse talents,” said Liz Trueblood, volunteer coordinator. “Some volunteer a few hours a month, others for several hours a week. This adds up to over 2,500 hours per year.”

Okay, okay, I’ll stop with the cheesy Copacabana/Barry Manilow puns. Now listen, as basic as this sounds, I love Starbucks. But everything Starbucks does, the Cupacabana has managed to do better. I first started out trying their simple cold brew – no flavors, just the real deal. Not only did it have a deep roasted flavor, but the way it made me feel was “wow.” I have an odd relationship with caffeine. A lot of caffeinated drinks give me the jitters, but occasionally I’ll come across just the right brew that makes me feel like I could conquer the world with no bad caffeine side effects.

me just right. Don’t feel like you have to give up the fun fall flavors by skimping on the corporate coffee houses.

The Cupacabana has pumpkin lattes, pumpkin cold brews and even caramel apple, all for fall. They have an assortment of year-round flavor options like lavender, classic vanilla and hazelnut, among others.

Coffee not your thing? They are not lacking in the tea selections. You’ll find everything from Earl Grey tea fit for the queen herself all the way to mango and cardamom. As I stopped people around town to ask what their drink of choice was in their blush-colored cups, the majority answer was either the churro latte or the iced churro latte. This bundle of flavor is made with espresso, cinnamon syrup, cinnamon sugar and doce de leite sauce, which is similar to dulce de leche caramel sauce that we all know and love in south Florida. This can be served hot or cold.

Visiting this pink oasis of happiness made me realize why in such a short amount of time they’ve managed to already have “regulars” and land themselves in the Best of Upper Keys for best coffee. They plan on adding mobile ordering in the future for those in a hurry, but I think I will always be a walk-up order. Everything about my visit was so peaceful and pleasant.

Peixoto has found her passion and knows her stuff. This isn’t a place you’ll find the owner saying “eXpresso” at all.

They’re the real authentic deal. As long as they’re serving, I’ll be buying.

Editor’s note: This is the first in a two-part series on the history behind the arrival of veterans and their contributions to the Florida Keys through the New Deal.

I

In 2023, $625 in 1945 dollars would be worth a little over $10,000.

And then, the Great Depression brought the country to its knees. World War I veterans, many of whom were out of work, were given a glimmer of financial hope when Texas Rep. Wright Patman crafted a piece of legislation that would allow for the early disburse-

ment of the promised bonus checks.

In support of Patman’s bill, veterans began gathering at the Capitol. Some came from as far away as Oregon, and

by June 1932, 20,000 or more World War I veterans had arrived, erected tents and shanty huts, and squatted on sidewalks and in parks in hopes that their presence would help to influence the vote. Some had traveled with their wives and family.

The World War Adjusted Compensation Act passed through the House but was defeated by a vote of 62-18 in the Senate on June 17, 1932. After the vote, President Herbert Hoover ordered the veterans who had gathered, the “Bonus Army,” to move out of D.C. The military was used to remove them.

The Army was led by Gen. Douglas MacArthur, aided by Maj. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Soldiers marched with fixed bayonets down American streets.

Tear gas was fired into the throngs of veterans. Tanks, led by Maj. George S. Patton, worked to drive the “Bonus Army” (and, in some cases, their wives and children) out of Washington.

It was not a good look for the president, and it was an election year. Subsequently, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected in November 1932. Roosevelt inherited the Great Depression and the aftereffects of his predecessor’s engagement with the Bonus Army. One of Roosevelt’s early acts as president was implementing his New Deal, promising relief, recovery and reform. Part of his plan was the creation of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA), approved

by Congress on May 12, 1933.

The agency’s purpose was to grant relief funds directly to state agencies.

FERA was allocated $500 million. Half was to be used for matching grants programs, and half was disbursed as discretionary funds. Julius Stone was Florida’s first FERA administrator. After graduating from Harvard University in 1926, Stone worked for the New York Welfare System. In 1933, he moved to Washington, D.C., and was employed by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration.

Stone had an affinity for Key West and opened an office in the Southernmost City. Believing in the lure of Key West, he felt that with a little bit of help and some elbow grease, Key West could become the “Gibraltar of the South.” He organized Key West’s residents into a volunteer corps responsible for beautifying the town. They worked on landscaping some of the main streets, spruced up the beaches, and refurbished 200 houses so that they could be rented out as accommodations by people visiting the island.

In accordance with FDR’s New Deal and its Works Projects Administration (WPA) programs, Stone lobbied to have the Florida Keys receive its fair allocation of funds. Among other Keys projects, the Key West Aquarium, touted as a tourist draw, became a WPA project.

Another project was to have repairs done to the Civil War-era Fort Jefferson, located on Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas.

Three hundred World War I veterans were assigned to the Fort Jefferson job. While they were awaiting the U.S. Navy’s approval to allow civilians to be

assigned work on a government base, Stone suggested that Key West be coupled to the mainland with a highway linked by a series of solid automobile bridges. Living on the island, Stone understood that while Flagler’s railroad brought the train to Key West, it was not bringing much of a tourist trade.

State Road 4A, the first version of the Oversea(s) Highway that opened to public transit in 1928, was incomplete — and that was a problem.

In its present incarnation, the Oversea(s) Highway proved a detriment to tourism, and a more complete road system would help increase traffic flow to Key West. The original highway traveled from Miami and across the Upper Keys but ended at the far end of Lower Matecumbe Key. Bridging the gap required the use of automobile ferries that, depending on weather, tide and mechanics, were not always reliable. By 1933, one ferry ran between Lower Matecumbe Key and Grassy Key, and one operated between Hog Key (Marathon) and No Name Key. The WPA accepted Stone’s idea to have the veteran workforce brought in to build a solid bridge system that would eliminate the need for the ferry system. The 300 veterans initially assigned to rehabilitate Fort Jefferson were redirected to the Upper Keys to work on the automobile bridges. They began arriving in late 1934.

Part two will provide insights into the bridge projects the World War I veterans began, the devastating hurricane that altered the course of history and the response by Ernest Hemingway.

Dia de los Muertos celebration will take place in Islamorada on Nov. 3 with a sugar skullmaking workshop for kids, live music, a traditional procession and an Afro-Mexican fandango with special guest choreographers.

The free event is presented by Community Arts and Culture in the beer garden at Florida Keys Brewing Company, 81611 Old Highway.

Dia de los Muertos – or Day of the Dead – celebrations, unlike Halloween events that embrace mischief and spooky elements, are happy occasions that unite the living and the dead.

Events are often an explosion of color and life-affirming joy, where the living invite their dearly departed to join them in a celebration of their life and heritage.

Families traditionally attend Dia de los Muertos events in calavera style — wearing face paint and attire that reflects a skeleton or the dead.

The Islamorada activities begin at 5

p.m. with a calavera sugar skull-making workshop that is free for kids and those under age 21, and $5 for adults.

The Baila Foklorico will perform folkloric dance inspired by Creole-Caribbean, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Mexican indigenous cultures from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a procession and a fandango by the Ameyal Folkloric Ensemble.

Choreographers Catherine Hollingsworth and Emilio Hernandez, both accomplished in Cuban and Afro-Mexican folkloric-style dance, will lead the celebration.

Attendees are invited to wear bright colors, with or without calaverastyle face paint and costumes.

Community Arts and Culture, the event organizer, is a nonprofit organization that presents the arts as a tool for education and nurtures local and international musical artists who exemplify the diversity of the South Florida community.

Gas prices drop to low levels Florida gas prices sank to their lowest levels in three months. On Oct. 15, pump prices averaged $3.33 per gallon, after declining 15 cents last week. Florida’s gas prices have mostly been on a downward trend through the past four weeks. During that time, the state average fell from $3.69 a gallon to $3.33 a gallon.

“The discount at the pump has largely been driven by falling oil prices,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. “However, the downward trend could stall soon.

Ongoing geopolitical tensions allowed oil prices to regain some strength last week, though they remain below price levels we saw three weeks ago.”

The U.S. price of crude oil settled at $87.69 per barrel on Oct. 13. That’s $4.90 per barrel (6%) more than the week before, but well below the $93 per barrel highs on Sept. 27.

This program is available to all Monroe County homeowners.

Monroe County is accepting applications for the fiscal year 2023 FMA grant program. There is $220 million allocated nationwide for the program.

The deadline to apply through the Monroe County application process will close Nov. 15, 2023.

Homestead man cited for fishing violation A 57-year-old Homestead man was given a mandatory notice to appear in court citation on Oct. 14 for possessing an undersized fish.

Islamorada Marine Deputy Martin Digrius was patrolling Lignumvitae Channel near MM 77.7 when he saw a man identified as Jose Angeles Montero Bravo fishing. An inspection revealed Montero Bravo to be in possession of a yellowtail snapper four inches in length. The required minimum is 12 inches. More information on fish regulations is at www.myfwc.com Man arrested for reported threats A 39-year-old Marathon man was arrested on Oct. 16 for threatening military aircraft. Michael Angelo Robulock was charged with threatening to discharge a destructive device.

Robulock told the sheriff’s office the military was flying helicopters over his residence, adding that he would launch rockets at them if they flew below 1,000 feet. He stated, “If these (expletive deleted) keep flying over my house, they’re going to get a rocket.”

He was taken into custody without incident. The sheriff’s office notified the U.S. Navy of Robulock’s statements and subsequent arrest.

FIFTH ANNUAL TRUNK OR TREAT Founders Park, Islamorada Saturday, Oct. 21 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

This sweet and superbly-scary event is fun for all ages and families. With free admission, children will have the chance to fill their buckets with treats from the many decorated trunks. An inflatable croc slide and Frankenstein bounce house will also have kids swarming to enjoy. Attendees can also try their hand at carving a pumpkin. onroe County firefighter Jake Werner will honor Monroe County Fire Rescue’s fallen brother Herve Thomas in the 2023 Brotherhood Ride on Friday, Oct. 27.

The Brotherhood Ride consists of firefighters, police officers and EMS personnel who ride bicycles to honor first responders who have died in the line of duty. Thomas passed away while on duty in May 2021. The organization’s mission is to provide emotional and financial support to the families of fallen heroes.

This year’s ride is dedicated to Florida’s 27 fallen heroes who died in the line of duty in 2022. Werner and others on the team will pedal nine days from Naples to Miami, covering 600 miles, averaging 70 to 90 miles daily. Werner also rode in the 2022 ride in honor of Thomas.

“Firefighter Werner continues to represent Monroe County Fire Rescue in this ride to remember our fallen heroes across the state and our fallen brother Herve Thomas,” said Monroe

ome 35 Special Olympics athletes from the Florida Keys traveled recently to Naples, where they competed in the Special Olympics Florida Area 7 Fall Classic Games to determine advancement to the statewide games.

Keys teams hailed from Horace O’Bryant School, Key West High School, Coral Shores High School, Key Largo School and Treasure Village Montessori. They competed Oct. 14 and 15 in flag football, powerlifting and cornhole, which made its debut at this year’s Special Olympics.

FLAG FOOTBALL • Coral Shores Hurricanes, under Coach Connor Dixon, finished in first place against Lehigh High Lightning and Immokalee Indians. They will advance to the State Fall Classic at ESPN on Nov. 8-12.

• Key West Conchs, under coach Randy Acevedo, competed against Sarasota Seadogs in a two-game, head-to-head bracket to bring home the win, securing their slot in the State Games Competition at ESPN. • The Key Largo School Tornadoes will also advance to the State Games, but did not play last weekend due to a lack of competition from other teams.

A longshot: reducing wind insurance costs The soaring cost of wind insurance is another piece of the Keyswide affordability crisis. Wind and flood insurance costs are a perennial issue but county staff says this year there’s even more urgency.

Most wind insurance policies in the Keys are through the statebacked Citizens Property Insurance Company, known as the insurer of last resort.

“Thanks to the spiraling property insurance crisis, Citizens’ policy numbers have soared past $1.4 million because it is the default insurer for policy holders from the private sector insurance companies that have failed or left the state,” the report says.

“Lawmakers continue to pressure Citizens to shed policies by forcing insureds into take-out companies with higher premiums, and by limiting eligibility,” according to the report. “Preserving affordable wind insurance requires regular advocacy with Citizens, legislators, and the Office of Insurance Regulation to oppose efforts to increase premiums, eliminate the cap on annual increases, reduce coverage, and reduce eligibility.

“To make matters worse, recent state legislation now requires flood insurance to be carried by all Citizens’ policy holders – even for homes not at risk for flood,” according to the report.

Florida lawmakers passed significant insurance legislation this past year and county staff says it’s unlikely they’ll revisit the issue in any type of comprehensive way.

“Nevertheless, we will work with our delegation and with Monroe’s insurance advocacy group, FIRM (Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe), to press for some reforms that may help to reduce costs,” the report says.

The 2024 Florida Legislature’s session begins Jan. 9 and ends March 8.

lorida received a dubious distinction this year when it surpassed Texas as the state with the most book bans in its public schools.

Last month, PEN America, a nonprofit group formed in 1922 that protects free expression through the advancement of literature, released a list of all Florida school districts that have removed books from its classroom and/or school library shelves.

Brevard County schools pulled 153 titles from its classrooms and school libraries. Clay County had banned 403 books.

Brevard County’s list of banned books includes, “Johann Gutenberg and the Printing Press” by Kay Melchisedech Olson, “Poisonous, Smelly, and Amazing Plants”

by Zonderkidz.com and “The Backyard Bird Feeders’ Bible: The A-Z Guide to Feeders, Seed Mixes, Projects, and Treats” by Sally Roth.

PEN America’s list of Florida school districts and the books that have been banned in those districts jumps from Miami-Dade Public Schools (8 titles banned) to Okaloosa County School District (22 titles banned).

The good news?

Monroe County isn’t on the list.

“I feel really fortunate,” local Schools Superintendent Theresa Axford told the Keys Weekly on Oct. 9. “If a parent complained about a book, then we’d pull it initially and run it through a review committee, but no one has done that. Our books are chosen carefully, and I appreciate that parents are in our schools so much and trust our staff.”

She explained that the school district has a form available on its website, where parents can complain about a book.

“They have to cite the specific passages from the book,” Axford said. “In fact, one parent recently commended the school district at a school board meeting because she had not found anything objectionable in our school media centers.”

Axford was an English major during her undergraduate studies, and she completed her master’s thesis on “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck.

“I don’t want to get to the point of pulling books like ‘Of Mice and Men,’ and other literature. I believe in reading. I love reading and I don’t want to have the kind of stuff going on in our schools that is happening elsewhere in Florida.”

Axford added that all Monroe County school media centers recently received new furniture, so some videos circulating among parents and the press showing empty bookshelves inside school libraries are not empty because books were banned. Rather, they are surplus furniture being removed, Axford said.

“We have not been purging books from libraries,” Axford said. “Our media specialists have all received the state’s training.

They didn’t remove anything, other than the usual review of outdated books. Now, they did, on a few occasions, move some titles from, say, the section for kids in K-2 to the shelves for kids in grades 3-4, just to keep things age-appropriate.”

Axford said Sigsbee Charter School in Key West, a charter school located on a Navy base that serves an equal number of military and civilian families, has received some interest from parents about library materials.

“In terms of our school library, the state provided guidelines and created formal procedures to provide access, handle concerns and vet resources,” Sigsbee Principal Eli Jannes told the Keys Weekly on Oct. 11.

“The procedure provides an opportunity for parents to voice a concern, but it also ensures that a book is not removed based on one person’s opinion — that it is carefully reviewed by a certified panel.

“For example, we had a situation that emanated from an individual who did not thoroughly read or comprehend the legislation. The individual also did not read the book,” Jannes said. “Honestly, we have yet to receive any requests for consideration that follow the protocol set forth by the state.

“In the end, what matters is that all children feel like they belong and feel safe and supported so that they can learn. I would much prefer that parents encourage their children to read rather than limit their access to books. If you want to really keep them safe, control their access to social media — there are way more hidden dangers on TikTok than in the school library,” Jannes said, adding that Sigsbee also has recategorized some materials in the library based on age-appropriateness.

WHIMSY AND WONDER ARTIST TERE KELLEY’S INSPIRATIONS PRESENT COLORFUL CREATIONS

K

ey Largo Art Gallery has been around for more than 20 years and started from the idea of art as a community.

Art is someWILLIAM thing that is a DEPAULA collaboration, and the gallery unis an artist, derstands that by designer and gemologist who having more than believes in the 20 artists displaying power of art. their work. One of the artists who run the gallery is Tere Kelley, who grew up in the Florida Keys. Her work is fun, whimsical, environmental and surreal.

It is hard to see her work and not have a smile or sense of wonder.

A native Floridian who grew up on the water, Kelley was surrounded by artists and scientists throughout her life. Kelley’s uncle was the head of the Florida Institute of Oceanography.

Some of her earliest memories are sitting on oceanographic research vessels and being immersed in that environment.

“Well, I’ve always had a penchant towards art,” Kelley said. “I don’t know if it’s just because I’ve been surrounded by artists my entire life. I’m sure that has influenced me greatly. But I’m also a daydreamer and, since I can remember, craved the freedom that the creative thought process provides.

“There are endless possibilities in art and I like to translate that to canvas as well as in daily life,” she continued. “The creative thought process fosters and generates multiple avenues of problem solving.”

The nautical influence increased

when her mother, Carmen Kelley, earned her marine science degree.

While she loves living here, she has to admit that the Keys have perhaps gotten “a little too big for our britches.”

“The sense of community and how easily everyone comes together to help or provide in times of need — the collective heartbeat of the Keys community has prevailed and continues to. That is what makes this place paradise,” she said.

Most artists who’ve been around don’t paint the same consistently.

They usually work on different series and have different periods in their career. Like most artists, Kelley’s art is an interesting mix that depends on her moods. The artwork has a natural whimsy. She paints fanciful pieces with bright colors.

Kelley paints mostly in acrylics, but does work with multiple media.

She also likes to upcycle and bring found objects into her work. Some of these works are her environmental pieces that show the darker side of how humans hurt the environment.

Her creations include hermit crabs and shorebirds traversing trashstrewn seaweed, or a juxtaposition of a beautiful vase filled with items that typically litter shorelines. Perhaps the best way to describe the art is provocative.

Kelley says she is inspired by a large list of artists and historical figures, including Norman Rockwell, Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dali, Edward Hopper, Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Giuseppe Verde, Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keeffe. She is also inspired by numerous art movements: Renaissance, baroque, romanticism, realism, impressionism, expressionism, pop art and surrealism.

“Years ago, I started painting sardine cans. The first one I did can be seen on one of Mangrove Mike’s T-shirts – a sardine can filled with mahi mahi. They are hilarious and so much fun to paint. Not to mention I can fill them with anything,” she said.

“I have cans filled with everything from octopuses to tourists to iguanas and grasshoppers. Whenever I’m in a bit of a creativity slump, I paint a sardine can and it gets my creative juices flowing again.”

Her art speaks for itself. The overall message is: Do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do. She loves to create, and she has so much fun enjoying what she does.

“I’ve found that people are more drawn to my work because they can

sense the joy and thought behind it, oftentimes more so than the subject matter itself,” she said.

Kelley is tickled that her patrons love and support her art. She welcomes people who visit the gallery from all over the place who happened to see one of her pieces online.

“My heart swells at the thought that something I created brings that sort of joy. If you love it, buy it. It does not have to match your couch or your drapes or your grandma’s quilt. It only has to match you,” she said.

Coral Shores junior Sofia Jans has been a steady contributor for the ’Canes all season and when her team needed her most, she stepped up and proved to be a force against county rivals Marathon and Coral Shores. In a pair of games for which Coral Shores was short-handed, Jans managed to help keep her team’s spirits and hopes for wins alive.

Against the Conchs, she amassed 22 serve receptions and eight digs. In her play against Marathon, the libero led the team with a dozen digs, nine serve receptions and five assists. For her dependability, stellar play and willingness to give it her all on the court for her team, Sofia Jans is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

he Fighting Conchs spent the better part of last Friday on a school bus – more than six hours each way on their trip to and from Estero High School. That brought their total hours of bus travel to 35 over the past three weeks, making their upcoming bye week and homecoming much appreciated.

Marco Davila put Key West on the board first, kicking a field goal in the first half, and Noah Mercer ran one in for a 55-yard rushing touchdown, but the Wildcats outmatched Key West in size and speed, downing the Conchs 28-9.

“They were just more physical than us. Bottom line,” coach Johnny Hughes said. Also to the Conchs’ disadvantage were a pair of fumbles in Wildcat territory. “Ball security has not been too secure for us this year,” Hughes said. The Conchs have played some fantastic football this season but have been plagued with multiple turnovers in almost every game. Given the level of competition they face weekly, Key West cannot afford to turn the ball over if they hope to stay in the game.

As for the upcoming bye week, Hughes said, “We need it to heal some bumps and bruises.” After that, Key West will face Gateway High out of Fort Myers for homecoming on Oct. 27.

Marathon took full advantage of its bye last week to rest, recuperate and recharge. The Fins will need it for their upcoming homecoming week, a celebration packed with activities. The 2-5 Dolphins face 1-6 Gateway Charter out of Fort Myers on Friday, Oct. 20 for their homecoming game.

Coral Shores played Archbishop Carroll at home last Friday, losing to the Bulldogs 35-26. The ’Canes got off to a slow start against their highly-ranked opponent, fumbling the ball on their first offensive drive. Further dampening Coral Shores’ spirit was the loss of starting quarterback Yemcel Moreno, who took a helmet to the knee, rendering him unable to play for the rest of the game.

“Yemcel is a tough young man,” coach Ed Holly said of his QB. “For him to leave the game, it has to be pretty bad.”

Holly shifted his offense and moved Isaac Holmes to receive the snaps, a decision which helped spark the Hurricanes in the game. Dantay Diorio struck first with a 28yard touchdown run, the ’Canes’ only score of the first half.

Holmes took matters into his own hands in the second half, tossing two touchdown passes, one for 31 yards to Jamoris Davis and another to RJ Dube. Holmes also picked up a defensive fumble and ran it back 52 yards for another six points. Holly praised Holmes’ ability to calm the offense and get some points on the board.

“I’m happy with the effort the team put out. They played together and battled to the end,” Holly said, adding that Archbishop Carroll is “6-1 for a reason.” Next up for the ’Canes is Tradition Prep, a relatively new school out of Port St. Lucie.

Holly is “looking forward to the travel and playing a team we haven’t had the chance to play before. That is always exciting,” he said. The ’Canes will play the Pirates on Oct. 19 in a game which was moved to Thursday to accommodate Tradition Prep’s homecoming and senior night festivities.

FINISH LINE IN SIGHT

n Oct. 11, Coral Shores and Key West runners traveled to Marathon for a rare in-county 5K race just ahead of districts. All three schools have been feeling the strain of long-distance travel, making the Marathon meet just what was needed toward the end of the regular season.

Runners started at Sombrero Beach, headed past Marathon High School to a turnaround point and finished at the start line, making for a fast, flat and scenic course.

Marathon’s Vance Bursa was first overall, running the 3.1-mile course in 16:28. Key West’s Colbin Hill was second in 18:08, while Jakub Bursa took third in 18:34. In fourth and fifth were Marathon’s Dillon Shelar and Mason Buxton, and behind them were Conchs Daniel Roy and Jerven Louis. Caleb Shelar and Adrien Holdinga of Marathon were eighth and ninth, and Coral Shores’ Nathaniel Shugarman finished 10th.

Curiously missing from the top spots of the varsity boys race was Tony Bursa, who typically trades places with his brothers on the podium. Already competing as a varsity runner in eighth grade, Tony took first overall in the middle school race held earlier in the afternoon, finishing a shorter twomile course in a blazing 10:30. Allan Taylor and Lucian Burns combined for the Marathon sweep of the first three places.

In the girls’ varsity race, Mikkel Ross of Marathon was first across the line in 22:05. Key West’s Laira Anaya was second in 23:09, followed by Ella Dunn of Marathon in third. Violet Jangraw of Key West was fourth and Coral Shores’ Kai Guth took fifth place. Dolphins Madelyn Thornton, Maeve Merryman, Rain Banks and Sara Robinson finished within a minute of one another in sixth through ninth place, with a runner from Florida Christian capping off the top 10.

Key West’s top two runners opted to sit the race out after running four races in a two-week window. Coach Keara McGraw felt that a fifth would be a little heavy for them, opting for a race on the grass in Key West later in the week.

McGraw has high hopes for the coming weeks. “Definitely excited going into the home stretch,” she said. “They’ve all been working really hard and it shows. It’s a great group of girls, and if we can keep everyone healthy, then I’m excited about our regional chances and beyond this year.”

In the middle school and junior varsity girls’ race, seventh grader Rebecca Merryman crossed the line in first place in 15:10, followed by sixth grader Shaina Strama. Coral Shores’ Hayden Teal was third overall.

Three days later, Key West held a home meet at the golf course with a 5K for varsity runners and a shorter race for younger athletes. The ladies and gentlemen ran together, with Hill taking first place in an even 20 minutes. Next was Caylaa Makimaa in 20:44. Andrew Fedor was third, Roy was fourth, and Louis was fifth. Finishing in sixth overall was James Swain, then Naima Thomas in seventh. William Forster, Owen Fisher, and Wyatt Gibson finished in eighth through tenth place. Swain represented Basilica School, while the rest of the top 10 were Conchs.

As the teams make final preparations for districts, the vibe is nothing but positive.

“I feel great,” said Key West boys coach Mark Coleman. “The boys' average time yesterday (at the Marathon meet) was 21:00, which is our best average time in three seasons.”

Coleman was without his number two runner, and the team still managed to surpass his expectations. He described his team as “hungry” and “fired up,” saying they will be ready to run their best times of the season Nov. 1 at districts to hopefully qualify for regionals the following week.

Coral Shores’ young teams have less racing under their belts, but have improved greatly as the season has worn on. Coach Lyndie Myers’ girls and Gabe Suarez’s boys are making huge strides in their finishes and can expect to PR at districts on Nov. 1. Coral Shores and Key West participate in the 2A division, while Marathon is 1A. Marathon’s boys are hoping to make it to their ninth consecutive state meet but will first have to qualify in districts and regionals.

“To make it back, we have to stay focused and keep putting in the miles,” said coach Jim Murphy. His Dolphins love nothing more than to rack up extensive weekly miles, but some lingering injuries are looming over the team. “We have a couple runners that are limited to the ski machine and assault bike in the gym,” he explained. “We still have a lot of season left, and having everyone at their best come postseason is our goal.”

Meanwhile, the Marathon girls are looking to make their fifth consecutive state appearance. Head coach Darby Sheehan’s most difficult task will likely be determining who will make the cut for the team’s top seven runners. Her squad has been consistent and strong, with seniors Ross and Banks helping to set the pace for the younger athletes. Banks has made the trip to Tallahassee four times already, qualifying first as an eighth grader, and Ross has run the course one time less, due to a serious knee injury from which she has clearly recovered. Their first hurdle will be districts on Nov. 2.

Key West’s girls are the fastest team the Conchs have assembled in many years. They have a solid chance of qualifying for the big show this season. If they continue to run as a team and stay focused, their goal is within reach. Though it ultimately comes down to what their competition does on race day, the Lady Conchs have grit and positive mindsets fueling their drive to qualify beyond districts.

eys golfers had one last meetup prior to their district matches held on Oct. 23.

In their final meeting, Key West pulled ahead, winning the boys match with the low team score of 192. Coral Shores took second with 207 and Marathon was third with 216.

It was senior night for the Conchs, but it would be a trio of juniors who stormed the podium. Andrew Bassett had the best score of the day, shooting a 41. Fellow Conch Peyton Zubieta scored a 43, winning second place. In third was Derek Ramos of Coral Shores with a 47. The best Key West junior Andrew Bassett senior score of the day in the earned the top score of the Keys’ boys’ division would come final in-county matchup, shooting from Michael Merryman of a 41. Rounding out the top 10 were Preston Carroll (51) and Tanel Irons (52) of Coral Shores in sixth and seventh, Marathon’s Mason Thornton (55) and Cullen Coleman-Sayer (56) in eighth and ninth, and a three-way tie for 10th place, with Marathon’s Dylan Ziels and Roco Piscetello shooting a 57 along with Coral Shores’ Aiden Althouse.

On the girls’ front, Marathon senior Summer Haines, likely the school’s only representative at districts, won first place with a 52. Hurricane Gabby Thomas was next, scoring a 56. Conchs Maeve O’Hearn, Althea Olsen and Parker Curry took spots three through five scoring 65, 73 and 77 respectively.

Next week, Coral Shores and Marathon will have some friendly competition sprinkled in at the FHSAA District 16 1A Championship match held at Crandon Golf Course in Key Biscayne. Key West will play at Grand Palms Sabal Course in Pembroke Pines in the 2A Championships. Teams and individuals with low scores have the chance to move on to regionals on Oct. 30 for Marathon and Coral Shores and the following day for Key West.

ey West celebrated senior night with a win against Coral Shores on Oct. 10. The Conchs defeated the Hurricanes 3-1 on their home court for some lateseason confidence heading into district play.

A makeup match two nights later against Mater Lakes did not go as well for Key West. The Conchs lost 3-0, to end their regular season with a 7-17 record. Key West elected to play a level of competition beyond what they should expect in their own division this season. A FHSAA District 4A quarterfinal matchup against Miami Killian on Oct. 17 will determine whether that strategy pays off (results not available at press time). The Conchs earned the higher seed, which came with a home court advantage for the match. The winner will go on to play Gulliver on Oct. 19 in the semis.

Coral Shores finished its regular season on the road this week, but the drive was not too terrible. The ’Canes played county rivals Key West and Marathon, splitting the matches.

On Oct. 10, Coral Shores managed to win a set against Key West, despite missing two of three middle hitters due to injuries. They closed out their regular season on Oct. 12 in Marathon. The Dolphins gave the Hurricanes a great competition, but Coral Shores came away with the 3-0 victory (2520, 25-11, 25-21). In that game, the Hurricanes were without all three of their middle hitters, forcing head coach Sam Ovalle to make some changes.

Iona Holmquist shifted her regular position and Nivaeh Howard was moved up from the JV squad to help fill the voids. “Both girls played tremendous for us,” Ovalle said. “I am really proud of them.

Iona is such a leader and team player for us. We really needed her, and she not only moved positions to help the team, but she played great.” Coral Shores ends the regular season with a 13-9 record and now looks toward the postseason.

Marathon pulled out all the stops in an attempt to upset the higher-ranked ’Canes, bringing amazing energy and playing some of their best volleyball of the season in the loss to Coral Shores. In a rematch of their September win, the Fins dropped a 3-2 decision to David Posnack Jewish Day on Oct. 10, giving them a 2-15 regular season record.

At least one Keys team will make it past quarterfinal play.

Marathon, seeded sixth, and third-seeded Coral Shores faced one another on Oct. 17 in Tavernier for the FHSAA 3A District 16 Championships (results not available at press time). The winner faced second-seeded Somerset South Homestead, a team Coral Shores beat in the regular season, the following night.

In preparation for the match, Marathon coach Kelley Cruz kept it simple, saying the “plan for districts is to see what we can fix and fix it.”

Ovalle was a bit more elaborate. “Marathon has improved so much and their crowd really brought the energy with their football team coming in after practice,” he said.

“It was such a fun atmosphere and we kept telling our girls to embrace it. It’s the way high school sports should be. We thought we were going to be hosting Keys Gate in districts, and we know Marathon will make our first round tougher.

“We challenged our student body to make sure they bring the energy Tuesday like they did in Marathon. It should be a lot of fun and make it that much more special that our first district game will also be a county rival,” he said.

ey West hosted its final regular season meet on Oct. 14. Doral Academy made the trip to the College of the Florida Keys pool to give the Conchs some fierce competition. The Conchs outswam the Firebirds in both the boys and girls divisions, and Key West piled on numerous first-place finishes and personal bests, proving they are peaking right on time for districts.

Key West’s girls swept the relay events. Katelyn Noss, Taylor Gibson, Gracie Lechnar and Aly Camargo teamed up for the top spot in the 200 medley relay, with Noss, Lechnar, Camargo and Reeghan Davis joining forces to win the 200 free relay. Davis then joined Gianna Felini, Megan Fedor and Hadley Badoni to win the 400 free relay.

Lechnar went on to win the individual 200 free and 100 butterfly races. Bardoni won two individual races of her own, the 200 IM and 500 free. Camargo took first in the 100 free, Noss won the 100 back, and Gibson placed first in the 100 breaststroke event.

The boys fared well with a relay sweep, starting with Eli Morris, Anthony Korzen, Charlie Doerfel and AJ Smith in the 200 medley relay.

Korzen then teamed up with Santiago Gonzalez, Westley Ellerbee and Jeffrey Hoyt to win the 200 free relay. In the 400 free relay, Hoyt, Ellerbee, Smith and Hugo Blinckmann finished first.

In individual action, Korzen picked up his third first-place of the meet in the 100 breaststroke event. Gonzalez won the 200 free, Doerfel won the 100 butterfly and Ellerbee won the 100 free event. New school record holder AJ Smith tried his luck at a different event, winning the 100 backstroke.

Multiple athletes logged personal best times in the races. Bardoni and Fedor set personal records in the 500 free, along with Camargo and Mary Searcy in the 100 free and Tegan Lavin in the 200 free. For the boys, Westley Ellerbee and Santiago Gonzalez and Jason Frankel PRed in the 100 free. Frankel also had a personal best in the 50 free. Thomas Horvath and Eli Morris PRed in the 100 back, Jacob Perez in the 500 free, and Devon Soni in the 100 breaststroke.

Coral Shores traveled to Miami Country Day on Oct. 10 to participate in a tri-meet against the Spartans of Country Day and the Riviera Prep Bulldogs. The Hurricanes had some fantastic finishes in their final competition prior to districts, giving them lots of hope to swim on to regionals and states in Ocala this year.

The girls 200 IM and freestyle team of Layne Smith, Abbie Sargent, Allegra Fucaraccio and Riley Cooper beat out the other schools for two first place finishes. The foursome continued to swim past their competition, earning individual wins as well. Cooper finished first in the individual 200 IM, Sargent took first in the 100 backstroke, and Smith picked up a pair of individual victories in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

The boys team also faced stiff competition but Patrick O’Donnell still managed to cruise to two first place finishes. O’Donnell won the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard breaststroke events.

A trip to Ocala will be the goal for both teams, but they will need to get past two more rounds of competition, starting with districts. Coral Shores will swim at Ransom on Oct. 19 for the FHSAA 1A District Championships. Divers will take the plunge on Oct. 20. 2A Key West swam their district meet at Gulliver on Oct. 18 (results not available at press time).

LOCAL SOCCER PLAYERS TAKE THEIR GAME TO THE NEXT LEVEL

T

he girls recreational and club soccer program in the Upper Keys has produced several champions and finalist medals over the last two years.

Recently, four teenage girls made it to the next level, joining Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) Academy in Miami.

Paris Saint-Germain Academy is one of the largest youth soccer networks in the world, developing highpotential players with more than 175 locations, 30,500 players and 600 coaches across 19 countries.

Key West’s Kailey Clynes, Key Largo’s Farrah Valverde, Islamorada’s Nevyn Walsh and Tavernier’s Kayla Serota all received congratulations letters from the PSG Academy after going through multiple tryouts and camps that saw hundreds of girls trying out in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Serota, a 13-year-old defensive standout, has been playing up two age groups on the gold level U16 team.

Both Walsh and Valverde were starters for the U15 team that played in the West Pines Tournament “Kickoff Classic” in Pembroke Pines.

Clynes moved from Key West

Four youth stars join prestigious PSG Academy shortly after being accepted, but is a starter on her new high school soccer team in Maryland.

Since 2014, Paris SaintGermain Academy Miami has been established as a reference for European soccer development in Florida, the United States and abroad. By providing training and exposure to high-level youth soccer both locally and internationally, players of all levels are given opportunities to accelerate their progress.

In 2022, Paris SaintGermain Academy initiated a development program for girls and women through FC Miami City, co-founding members of the USL W League. As a competing team in the USL W, the club provides exposure oppor-

tunities, both on and off the field, for future generations of female soccer players, and further defines a soccer pipeline for women between the collegiate and professional level.
