SCHOOL BOARD REFLECTS ON 2022-23

Aremarkably brief meeting of the Monroe County School Board lasted barely 20 minutes beyond its citizens’ comment portion, allowing superintendent Theresa Axford to encapsulate the district’s progress throughout the 2022-23 school year.

The superintendent’s encapsulation celebrated what many instructors described to her as “the first real school year in a while” and touted smooth integration of new curriculum and testing by teachers.

Increasing engagement with more than a dozen local organizations like NOAA, Mote Marine Lab, Dolphin Research Center, the History of Diving Museum and the Coral Restoration Foundation to enhance environmental education opportunities headlined Axford’s report. Keys schools also boasted several state science fair winners this year.

Axford said the district’s efforts drew notice from accreditation agency Cognia, which suggested that the district should become a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) district.

“I’m very proud of this environmental education emphasis, because it’s so critical for our community that our students understand they are stewards of this beautiful place where we live,” she said.

In addition to acknowledging achievements of many student-athletes across the district as

they claimed district, regional and state championships, Axford reminded the board of the district’s efforts to collaborate and engage with community members through English Learning (EL) nights, art nights and heritage festivals.

The superintendent also gave a nod to half a dozen theatrical productions throughout Keys schools, as well as high placements from student musicians in statewide band competitions. She announced a new partnership between Key Largo School and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University to establish an aerospace program at the school and recognized the accomplishments of career and technical education (CTE) students in statewide competitions, one of whom – Marathon senior Jay Sweeney – was recognized with a Great Educational Moments (GEMS) award earlier in the evening.

Board member Sue Woltanski voiced her thanks for the Keys Kids Swim program, which enabled 67 kindergarteners at Key Largo School to take two weeks of swimming lessons. Woltanski advocated for the life-saving program to expand throughout the district’s schools and grade levels – upon their first evaluation before lessons, she said, only 16% of the students could save themselves after jumping into the water.

To close the meeting, the board unanimously approved its 2023-24 instructional materials budget of $2.14 million, $1.04 million in budgeted costs for a contract with Virco, Inc. to replace classroom furniture at Marathon High School, and a $4.02 million contract with ABM Industry Groups for custodial services.

‘I FOUND MY NICHE’

With a career change from law enforcement to life insurance, Matt Pitcher’s priority is still protecting his community

For Matt Pitcher, a commitment to protect and serve his community goes well beyond his 23 years in law enforcement. It’s a promise that drives his career choices even today.

Before moving to the Keys, Pitcher spent 15 years with the CharlotteMecklenberg Police Department, including an extended stint in the undercover narcotics unit and two deep cover assignments combating organized crime and domestic terrorism. His background served him well in the eight years to come with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, during which he continued work with narcotics and the Major Crimes unit.

But in September 2022, what began as an ear and eye infection soon sent Pitcher to Mariners Hospital for more than a week, with an eventual diagnosis of eosinophilic asthma. Though he had suffered from exerciseinduced asthma in extreme cases in the past, the severity of the most recent attacks was like nothing he’d ever experienced.

“I remember the first time I got up to go pee, I sent all the nurses rushing in because I couldn’t breathe right and my heart rate went through the roof,” he recalled. “It took basically that full week before I could just walk one lap around the hospital. … At that time, my lung capacity was somewhere around 30%.”

Pitcher eventually tried to return to work, but after executing a search warrant one morning, “I went to my car to go get something, and walking back, I lost it.”

Even more daunting than the physical challenges was the new mental hurdle for Pitcher: as relayed by his doctors, with a long recovery ahead and complete lung function off the table, continuing his career in law enforcement wasn’t in the cards.

“I’m still trying to grasp it, to some degree,” he admitted, the weight of the

news still evident as he spoke openly and honestly to the Weekly.

In need of a new career path, Pitcher knew his next job would still need to feed his passion for giving back to his community – and he wasn’t quite ready to fully detach from the brotherhood of MCSO.

He found his answer with American Income Life Insurance Company (AIL), known for its work with 34,000 different unions across the country. Originally tapped to work with the Fraternal Order of Police doing Zoom conferences with officers on the mainland – “cops talking to cops, definitely works better,” he said – Pitcher soon put in a request to essentially operate his own franchise in the Keys, working with and helping the neighbors he already knew.

The life insurance connection is of personal significance for Matt, whose family was unable to collect on his father’s policy after the latter passed away in 2005. And after what he’d just been through this year, Pitcher realized it would be smart to find life insurance of his own – only to be told that his lung problems now preclude

him from obtaining coverage with any company, even the one that hired him.

“(AIL) will insure people that nobody else would, and even they won’t touch me,” he said.

With his family history with life insurance, aligning himself with a company that could cover a wide variety of clients while paying claims consistently was paramount. He noted that AIL’s rating of A+ with AM Best, an independent credit ratings agency, “played heavily” in his final decision.

“I started looking in and quickly learned a whole lot about insurance, and that’s when it all kind of came together,” he added. “I definitely feel like I found my niche where I go and talk to officers now, and not even to sell them a policy. It just became this big mystery where nobody understands these different kinds of insurance. A lot of people are getting ripped off or swindled instead of understanding what’s really needed and what’s not.

“I’m meeting with several people tomorrow who have policies, and they just asked, ‘Would you sit down with me and tell me what I have?’ They really don’t have a clue. I’m meeting everybody face to face, and they have my personal phone number.”

Through 23 years in law enforcement, Pitcher said one challenge that stuck out the most was trying to help families after the loss of a loved one. In this case, it’s what fueled him to look at the new career as a pivot in his calling to serve friends and neighbors in Marathon and beyond.

“I found a direct connection between that and life insurance,” he said. “You’re getting to protect that family ahead of time before a tragedy happens. It sounds weird to say, but when a client passes away, their family can reach out to me directly. I can take care of everything, and I … can be actively involved in making sure the process is easier for them.”

espite windy weather and rough seas, the inaugural I.CARE Trash Derby was a major success. The two-day event brought together tourists, locals, nonprofits and dive shops for a common goal: the largest-ever debris cleanup event in the Keys. Participants from throughout the Keys took up gloves and bags in the community fight against marine debris and coastal trash.

The three competing divisions were: land/ shore, private boats and dive shops. In total, participants cleared out a whopping 12,759.67 pounds of marine debris, plastic pollution and trash from our mangroves, coastlines and waterways.

Following the derby, a family-friendly ecofestival at Founders Park in Islamorada celebrated the beauty of the Florida Keys and those who work to protect it every day. “We hit our goal,” said I.CARE co-founder Mike Goldberg. “We’re so grateful to everyone and our partners and sponsors. We couldn’t do this without you.”

CONCHS SOFTBALL TO VIE FOR REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Key West downs Somerset in extra innings for semifinal win

The Lady Conchs softball team came out of the gate ready to play on May 10, scoring two runs in the first inning of their regional quarterfinal game against Riviera Beach Suncoast. The Chargers were not just going to roll over, though, as they chipped away at the lead, tying it up in the third. Key West was determined to secure its chance to advance in the playoff bracket and poured on seven runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead. Solid defense, plus three more runs in the sixth inning, gave the Conchs a 10run advantage and the opportunity to retire an inning early in a mercyrule win.

Scarlet Niles led the team offensively, going 3-4 and stealing a pair of bases. Madelyn Perusse and Isabella Franco each had two hits and two RBIs. The remainder of the dozen Conch hits came off the bats of Dharma Murray, Alexandra Rodriguez, Skye Sterling, Tavyn Gage and Ty Cervanrtes. Defensively, Key West was error-free, effectively shutting down the Chargers after the second inning. Chloe Gilday took the win in the circle, striking out five batters while pitching 5-2/3 innings. Nevaeh Arnold came into the game with two outs and the bases loaded, ending the game in a single pitch with an out at first base and a final score of 12-2.

Senior, Key West Baseball

ANDRIS ‘LUCKY’ BARROSO

With a big game on the line, the Conchs can count on senior Andris “Lucky” Barroso to see them through. The 6’5” righty is imposing in physical stature but it is his ability to control the ball that strikes fear in batters.

This season, Barroso is 9-1 in games in which he started, with his only loss being to the top-ranked team in the nation. His stats this season include a save and a no-hitter. Barroso is near-perfect in fielding, with just one error in his four-year varsity career for the Conchs.

With a 3-for-4 performance at the plate and two stolen bases, junior Scarlet Niles sparked Key West’s offensive onslaught in their regional quarterfinal matchup. ELLA HALL/Keys Weekly

Key West is currently ranked No. 2 in its region and faced Somerset Academy Pembroke Pines in a regional semifinal game on May 16. It would take extra innings to finish the nail biter, as the Conchs secured a 7-6 win courtesy of a walkoff hit by Isabella Franco. With results available shortly before press time, stay tuned to the May 25 edition of the Keys Weekly for full coverage. The Conchs will now travel to American Heritage High School on Friday, May 19 with a regional crown on the line at 7 p.m.

Barroso is unquestionably a lightsout pitcher, but his contributions to his team do not end with his arm.

“He’s an outstanding teammate who leads by example as an athlete, in the classroom, and in the community,” said Justin Martin, Key West athletic director. “He truly embodies Conch pride in every aspect.”

For his solid performance on the mound and exemplification of a team leader, Andris Barroso is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

“Lucky is a fierce competitor who never lets the moment seem too big. He’s been a part of multiple no-hitters in his Conch career and has pitched in some of Conch baseball’s biggest moments in recent memory.”

Marathon High School has seen a flurry of college signings this month. As of May 11, add to the list Frantz Noel, the 6-foot guard and defensive tackle for the Fins. Frantz is a triple-threat athlete, playing on the gridiron and the soccer pitch and lifting in the weight room.

Noel is the second player to sign for the Avila Eagles in Kansas City, Missouri. He will be joining his teammate Dylan Globe, who signed earlier this month.

“I'm happy to have somebody I know up there,” he said.

Frantz will be playing on the offensive line this fall, as he's done in his entire career with the Dolphins. Frantz never thought he would be signing to play college football, but after his performance at the 2023 Orange Bowl Florida High School Football Showcase, the head coach of the Avila Eagles reached out with an offer.

“I was happy with it, so I took it," he explained.

He also expressed gratitude to his teachers, coaches and friends for all of their help and support over the years.

Last season, Weinstock had 217 saves, setting a school record for most saves in a single season. On top of receiving the most valuable player award this year, he was named to the all-county team two consecutive years. He also earned the 2023 captains award, 2022 outstanding goalkeeper award and 2020 jayvee goalkeeper of the year.

Weinstock, who signed his scholarship alongside family and school officials, said he had an experience like no other at Coral Shores.

“My freshman year I was overweight and didn’t make the varsity team. During my sophomore year, I lost 30 pounds and was under two senior goalkeepers,” he said. “My junior year I grew and earned the starting position making the all-county team for the first time. My senior year, my best year, I was a captain and led our team to a district final.”

Weinstock added that he always wanted to play college soccer since

“I would like to thank my mom for being a true soccer mom and always helping out with everything for both the team and myself. Lastly, I would like to thank my dad for teaching me almost everything I know and always believing in me even when I doubted myself,” Weinstock said.

Parents Jeff and Laura Weinstock said their son did some soul-searching and told them that the soccer journey isn’t over.

“He wanted the accolade of playing at the next level and he pursued that goal until it became his reality,” the Weinstocks said. ”He is looking forward to reaching his full potential with Barton College.”

Bosque, Hurricanes boys varsity soccer coach, said Weinstock worked hard to elevate his game to the college level.

“We’re all tremendously proud of his accomplishments. Barton is getting an outstanding goalie and an excellent young man as well,” he said.

KEY WEST MASONS HOLD 50TH ANNUAL FIFTH GRADE TRACK MEET

Gerald Adams makes it a three-peat

On May 13, seven Keys elementary schools traveled to the Key West High School track to compete at the annual fifth grade track meet held by Key West’s Masonic Lodge No. 64. Horace O’Bryant, Poinciana, Gerald Adams, Grace Lutheran, Basilica School, Sugarloaf and Stanley Switlik brought their best athletes to toe the line in the 60, 100 and 400 meter dashes, 4x100m relay, softball throw, standing broad jump and tug of war.

Gerald Adams Elementary School won the overall top trophy, taller than many of the competitors, for the third year in a row, making a nice departing gesture for longtime principal Fran Herrin, who will retire at the end of the school year. The event was Herrin’s 35th. Sugarloaf School was the runner-up and Stanley Switlik traveled the farthest, bringing an entire cheering section to help the school’s squad claim the sportsmanship award.

CONCH BASEBALL’S EPIC RUN ENDS IN REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Key West downs Somerset, falls to Miami Sunset

Key West baseball took care of business on May 9, defeating Somerset Pembroke Pines in the 4A regional quarterfinal game, 8-5. Andris Barroso got the start for the Conchs, striking out five over five innings to earn his ninth win of the season. Jacob Burnham offered an inning of relief and Felix Ong shut down the final inning, striking out three of four batters faced.

The Conchs racked up 10 hits against the Panthers. Noah Burnham was 2-3 on the night with a double and an RBI. Michael Greenberg had a pair of triples and an RBI. Jose Perdigon drove in two runs off two hits and Wyatt Kuhn, Sam Holland, Caden Pichardo and Anden Rady each had a hit for Key West.

The win advanced the Conchs to the regional semifinal game held on May 12 at Rex Weech Field against the Golden Hawks of Miami Springs High School. One year ago, Key West was in a nearly identical situation in which the Hawks upset the Conchs, effectively ending their season. It would be Miami Springs who got knocked out of the hunt for a state championship this year, as the Conchs made the most of their unusually low four hits.

Miami Springs struck first in inning three, scoring one run, but waking up the Key West bats in the process. Wyatt Kuhn took a base and a record when he was hit by a pitch. Kuhn, struck twice in the game by Golden Hawks pitchers, now holds the school record with 14 this season, and with Anden Rady also being struck in the game, the Conchs broke their team’s

single-season record for struck batters with 50.

With Kuhn on base, Jack Haggard walked, then Anden Rady reached base on an error, loading the bases and setting the stage for junior Anthony Lariz. With two outs and two strikes against him, Lariz homered on a line drive to center field, giving the Conchs the go-ahead run for the duration of the game. Later in the game, Haggard tripled to drive in a run, Michael Greenberg cranked out a double, and Gabe Williams had a base hit.

Miami Springs registered four hits of their own, but couldn’t string together enough offense to make up for Lariz’s grand slam. Defensively, Key West was perfect, committing zero errors in the win. Felix Ong got the start and the win, lasting five innings on the mound before Jacob Burnham finished the final two innings.

The 7-2 win placed the Conchs in the regional championship game on May 16 against Miami Sunset. Key West’s magic finally ran out against the Knights, falling 2-1 in a low-scoring affair and bringing the team’s season to a close with a 22-6 record. With results available shortly before press time, stay tuned to the May 25 edition of the Keys Weekly for full coverage.

SULTANS OF SPRAY

The side of Crane Point Museum and Nature Hammock’s gift shop is now a beautifully reimagined seascape, thanks to the combined efforts of world-renowned artist and conservationist Wyland and Stanley Switlik’s own artistic maestro Shannon Wiley.

On May 13, dozens of onlookers visited the nature center and enjoyed Driftwood Pizza’s donated pies as they watched the duo work with spray guns and brushes. Wiley enlisted the help of several Switlik artists to help him prep, and even apply, paint donated by Sherwin Williams.

“I have now painted three times with one of my heroes, and been ‘shot’ in the belly by him too.” said Wiley, recalling the pair’s prior collaborations on Marathon’s K-Mart plaza mural and the Waterfront Brewery mural in Key West. “We had quite a bit of fun, and he’s such a treat for me to paint with each time.”

“We here at Crane Point are very grateful to Mr. Wyland and Shannon,” added the nature center’s CEO, Charlotte Quinn, praising the time and talent donated by both artists. “They gave us a magnificent gift that will long be remembered. It was great to have lots of viewers watch history in action.”

LIKE THE ISLANDS, LOCAL THOROUGHFARES ALSO HAVE SOME HISTORY

BRAD BERTELLI

is an author, speaker, Florida Keys historian and Honorary Conch. His latest book, “Florida Keys History with Brad Bertelli, Volume 1,” shares fascinating glimpses into the rich and sometimes surprising histories of the Florida Keys.

One thing I love about my Facebook group “Florida Keys History with Brad Bertelli” is the comments. The group has attracted thousands of members, many of whom would be considered “oldtimers” who were either born in the Keys or moved here as children.

The group allows me to share my knowledge of Monroe County and the Keys and an amazing array of images (thanks mostly to the Key West Library’s Florida Keys History Center).

I started the group in December 2021 as an outlet where I could share a taste of the local history every morning. The response has been overwhelming, and it has blossomed into a group that inspires the exchange of memories, insights and stories of the old days told by those who lived through them. I love it because everyone in the group learns new and fascinating tidbits of history about the Florida Keys — myself included.

Because of the group, and my role as a local historian, I receive many history questions through social media, emails, texts and phone calls, and I try to respond to all of them. Sometimes I have the answers at the tip of my fingers, and sometimes I need to phone a friend or dig into some research, and sometimes time gets away from me, and I forget to follow through, which is why I like to tell people that if they don’t hear back from me in a week or two to reach back out.

Every query affords me the op-

portunity to learn more about this island chain. While I have acquired a pretty solid foundation of knowledge and will continue to learn about the Keys, there is just way too much out there for anyone to know everything. While I consider my specialties to include Indian Key (once upon a time the most important island in the Keys not named Key West) and Black Caesar (the legendary pirate of the Keys), one of the areas of local history I like to play around with is how the islands, communities and their roads came upon their names.

Some of the names have more obvious origin stories than others. For instance, Bahia Honda is the Spanish phrase for deep bay, and the island does boast one of the island chain’s deepest bays. Because of the island’s bahia honda, its iconic bridge was the most challenging of Henry Flagler’s railroad bridges to build.

Key Largo is another obvious choice as the island’s early Spanish name was Cayo Largo, which is fitting as largo means long, and Key Largo is the longest and largest of all the Keys. On the other hand, Crawl Key, in the Middle Keys, was named for a less apparent reason. Back in the days when the local waters were still filled with turtles and people fishing commercially for them, the island was home to turtle crawls where their catch could be corralled before being brought to market.

For those driving up and down the Overseas Highway, one of Crawl Key’s significant features is a road sign identifying Banana Boulevard. Every time I drive between Grassy Key and Curry Hammock State Park and see the Banana Boulevard sign, I smile and don’t know why. I just do. There are scores of other unusually named roads on the islands. However, one of the wildest names and a personal favorite is a narrow road on Key Largo near MM 103 called Transylvania Avenue. Recently, someone from my

group asked if I knew how Transylvania Avenue got its name. The strikingly different identifier is found in an Oceanside community filled with obvious sub-tropical island names like Jewfish Avenue, Snapper Avenue, Kingfish Street and Blue Runner Street. Why the weird name? I will posit three theories addressing the more obvious connotations. Likely, all of them are wildly off base.

First, the person who decided on the name had a familial connection to Romania, Transylvania’s home. Second, they graduated from Transylvania University, which, interestingly enough, is located in Lexington, Kentucky. Transy, as the university is known, is home to the Pioneers. The symbol on their baseball caps is a flying bat, and the university’s podcast is “Flying with the Pioneers.” I’m not sure about the connection between pioneers and bats, but the connection between the little flying mammals and Transylvania is crystal clear.

Of course, there is always the possibility that the avenue was named by a fan of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula,” whose castle was located in Transylvania. The third reason is probably a reach, but is worth noting because there is a kernel of truth in it, whether it was intentional or not.

The rough translation of transylvania is “other side of the woods.” At MM 103, where the avenue is located, a hammock (or woods) separates two residential neighborhoods. The hammock is bordered on one side by Transylvania Avenue, so, technically, it is the first road on the other side of the woods.

Somewhere out there is also what is probably the real reason why that road was given that particular name, and I hope it turns out to be a story with a bit of flair because a choice like that deserves an origin story with a little razzle-dazzle.

MUSICAL TIDBITS

A small collection of ‘sound bites’

Unless you’ve been under a rock or completely out of range of any media, you’ve probably heard that international pop star Ed Sheeran was victorious in the copyright infringement lawsuit leveled against him. This isn’t just a victory for Sheeran; it’s a victory for songwriters everywhere.

For elucidation and illumination purposes, copyright law basically dictates that the copyrightable parts of a song are lyrics and melody. That’s it. Chord progressions, rhythms, even song titles aren’t protected. I could write a song and call it “I Am The Walrus,” and as long as the lyrics and melody were different, I would not have infringed upon the Beatles’ classic. (Note to self: this is not a good idea.)

is the owner and operator of Top Notch Sportfishing in Marathon. His passions include scuba diving and enjoying the natural beauty of the Florida Keys.

This week’s weather looks to make for fantastic boating and fishing conditions. Light east winds will give you just enough of a cooling breeze, but not enough to make your boating experience uncomfortable with rough seas, so get out there and fish.

The mahi bite has not exactly been on fire this season, but that will change any day now. There have been a few mahi caught, but few and far between with any real size.

The black grouper bite has been good since the opening of the season on May 1, and the permit bite has also been good the past couple of weeks. This time of year, permit congregate on wrecks for spawning. Luckily for them, harvesting this species is prohibited from April 1 to July 31. However, sportsmen can typically knock this species off their bucket list if they put some time in to catch one this time of year. Drifting a crab above the wrecks where they congregate, using a ⅜ oz. jig head and lighter 20- to 30-pound fluorocarbon leader should land you one of these beautiful hard-fighting fish so you can get a fantastic photo.

The scattered sargassum grass has made live baiting and trolling difficult lately, but there has been just the right amount of wind needed to fly a kite. Using a kite to fish gives you more control over the placement of your baits and makes it less likely to have your live baits get fouled by sargassum.

Kite fishing is an extremely productive method of targeting pelagic species including, but not limited to, blackfin tuna, sailfish, wahoo, king mackerel and mahi. Several quality blackfin tunas up to 30 pounds were caught this week by the kite fishing method.

Several large schools of cero mackerel have been making their way across reef patches lately, making for a fast action fight that is fun to conquer on light tackle. Typically, when someone hears mackerel, they don’t think of sushi. Instead, they think of smoking it for fish dip because most mackerel species are oily. Cero mackerel happens to be one of my favorite species for sushi since fresh cero mackerel doesn’t have an oily or fishy taste. These mackerel can be targeted by trolling small shiny spoons along the reef or fishing live pilchards on light #3 wire.

The mangrove snappers are staging up and getting ready to invade the reefs in the next month or two. In the spring and early summer, mangroves are the primary snapper species targeted by reef anglers. You can use chunks of cut bait like ballyhoo, but if you really want a quality mangrove snapper, your best bet is to use a live pinfish on either a jig head or knocker rig. A 20- to 30-pound fluorocarbon leader with a 5/0 circle hook usually gets the job done. Use just a heavy enough jig head or sinker to get your bait to the bottom. Using too much lead can have you constantly re-tying your rig after getting snagged in the reef again and again.

Great weather and plenty of options for fish species to target only means one thing: Get out there and catch the fish of a lifetime – and have fun doing it. Tight lines, everyone.

To book a trip with Top Notch Sportfishing, call Captain Bill at 732-674-8323.

This most recent lawsuit was filed by the family of the late Ed Townsend, co-writer of the Marvin Gaye hit “Let’s Get It On”. The suit claimed that Sheeran stole the rhythm, chord progression, and other elements from the 1973 soul hit when he wrote his 2014 song “Thinking Out Loud.” Perhaps the plaintiffs were emboldened by the really bad verdict in the “Blurred Lines” lawsuit leveled by Marvin Gaye’s estate against Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke — a verdict the jury got so unbelievably wrong.

This jury got it right. There were no similarities in lyrics or melodic structure between the two songs. Ed Sheeran testified in his own defense, and really made his case understandable to non-musical jurors. As he explained it, “(These songs have) dramatically different lyrics, melodies and four chords, which are also different and used by songwriters every day, all over the world. … They are in a songwriter’s ‘alphabet,’ our toolkit, and should be there for all of us to use. No one owns them or the way they are played, in the same way that nobody owns the color blue.”

Sheeran’s victory is one for all songwriters. Nearly all music is derivative; the building blocks are the same. Let’s move on to…

Singing in the rain. Taylor Swift really is a badass. When the threat of lightning delayed the start of one of her recent outdoor concerts in Nashville, she waited it out. Starting more than three hours late, she treated her audience to the full Taylor Swift concert they had paid for — even though it was pouring rain. Many artists would have called it and canceled the show, but not Swift. The love her audiences feel for her is certainly reciprocated, and she showed her love and appreciation big-time.

There are videos online of this concert showing a very soaked Taylor Swift playing guitar and piano and singing for the tens of thousands of fans who waited patiently in the rain. She certainly gave her all that night, staying on stage for the full show and finally wrapping up after 1:30 a.m. Swift fans are among the most dedicated in all of music, and she certainly showed her dedication to her fans.

Speaking of a performer who has inspired generations of dedicated fans, Willie Nelson recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a pair of star-studded concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. Neil Young, Stephen Stills, George Strait, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Chris Stapleton, The Chicks, Kris Kristofferson, Rosanne Cash, Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow, Ziggy Marley and Snoop Dogg all came to jam with Willie and give him birthday props. Hollywood stars Owen Wilson, Helen Mirren, Ethan Hawke and Jennifer Garner all handled MC and introduction duties.

It’s a testament to the universal appeal of the Red-Headed Stranger that this diverse group of musicians all took the time to come out and play his party. Not to mention that if you put Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg in the same place — I’m sure anyone who even just drove by the Hollywood Bowl got a contact high from all the weed. It must have been one hell of a party. Happy 90th, Willie!

MHS band seeks instrument repair sponsors

The Marathon High School band currently has many older wind instruments that are in need of repair to work properly for students. There are 65 instruments that are in need of repair. Most repairs are more than $100 each. The band is asking for sponsors to “adopt an instrument” for repair. Each sponsorship is for $75 and will include a brass engraved name plate on the instrument case with the sponsor's name, foundation name or business name in a prominent location. Each instrument repair sponsor will also be listed in the band concert programs for the remainder of the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. Community support will help keep participation in band and music classes free for every student. Sponsors may write checks payable to “Marathon Band” with “instrument repair sponsorship” in the memo line. They can be mailed to the high school, dropped off, or picked up if requested. Contact morris.brooker@ keysschools.com for more information.

WALKING TO COMBAT THE STIGMA

THIRD ANNUAL MENTAL ILLNESS WALK AT LOAN DEPOT PARK

In honor of Mental Health Awareness month in May, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Miami is hosting A Walk for Mental Health Awareness, on May 20 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at Loan Depot Park, home of the Miami Marlins.

The event raises awareness and funding for local mental health services and has sponsorship and walk team opportunities available for those interested in participating. The walk is designed to combat the stigma of mental health, address the high incidence of suicide due to untreated mental health disorders and raise funds for NAMI Miami’s free programs offered in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

NAMI offers support groups, peer mentoring programs, outreach and educational classes. Despite the many challenges seen over the last three years, NAMI Miami engaged more than 21,000 students, young adults, adults, families and local leaders with its prevention, education, mental wellness and support programs. These programs are always offered at no cost to participants, led by NAMI-trained peer-leaders and remain confidential.

ADOPTION UPDATE: The third time is the charm! After two failed adoptions, Brownie (pictured right) was finally adopted to his forever home. He loves his new sister Scarlett, his two human brothers and his new mom and dad.

“NAMI Miami’s programs address the key barriers impeding half the population from seeking help for treatable mental health conditions: stigma, lack of knowledge about when to seek help and uncertainty about where to seek help. Untreated mental illnesses can lead to disability and to self-harm and loss of life,” said Susan Racher, NAMI Miami board chair. “We inspire those who are unwell to seek help, and we support them and their families in their recovery journey. This work is life-changing.”

According to the CDC, in 2020, an estimated 12.2 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.2 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.2 million attempted suicide. The psychological and financial effects of the past two years add urgency to NAMI’s outreach efforts. NAMI’s free programs augment clinical and therapeutic care, according to evidence-informed standards.

Sponsorship benefits are available for this event and range from $1,000 to $20,000. Sponsors will have the opportunity to join other organizations, corporations, foundations and individuals on a national level while supporting the effort to increase awareness of mental health challenges during one of the most arduous years in history.

More information is available at namiwalks.org/ miami, via email to Kate Edelson, kate@namimiami. org, or 305-665-2540 or 786-775-0667.
