HEALING SURVIVORS

OVERCOMING TRAUMA THROUGH A VIDEO & A FOX VISIT

Hi friends!

Reef is a red fox that was saved from a fur farm. He now lives in Key Largo with his human, Nicole Navarro.

Reef the fox here with your weekly “Reef’s Report.” The last week was pretty uneventful for me personally. No groundbreaking news to report on, no new animals coming to the Keys and no fun celebrities came to visit.

I think that last part needs to change. I would really love to meet Tim Gunn or Stella McCartney.

My mother, on the other hand, had an eventful weekend. She had to brave the traffic and head up to Home Depot to place the large order to be delivered for Libby and Louie’s new enclosure upgrade. Mom said it was “awful” and that she is “never driving on the stretch on the weekend ever again.”

Mom also participated in a panel after the screening of “Real Fur” on Tuesday evening. This was a private, online event, hosted by the production company and director, Taimoor Choudry. You might remember that my fox friends and I made a cameo appearance in this documentary that raises awareness of the fur trade, particularly in Canada. Mom got to talk about what it is like caring for foxes once they have been saved from fur farms, our health issues, our specific needs and how amazing we are as a species, which should never have been ripped from the wild over one century ago for something as ridiculous as a fashion item. Anyway, when this film becomes available to the public, I will let you all know.

On Friday, April 28, my mom and little Kai fox will visit Kinder in the Keys. If you weren’t aware, Pawsitive Beginnings and Kinder in the Keys recently partnered to bring their clients a unique opportunity to meet survivors of a different species. Partnering with Kinder in the Keys to share the stories of survival from the fox’s perspective has proven to be a healing experience for the women. Realizing that these animals, which were born into a life of suffering and trauma, once rescued, have overcome their past and now live a life that they never knew was possible, has given hope to the women that they can do the same. Trauma knows no boundaries when it comes to species. Every sentient being on the planet is susceptible to being exposed to trauma in various forms.

Word on the street is we may be creating a new partnership with another organization in town, but I won’t know more until next week. So again, I will keep you posted.

Anywho, that’s all for this week. Follow along on all of our social media pages by heading to our website and clicking the links on the bottom of the page at pawsitivebeginnings. org.

Until next time, Reef, over and out!

This big boy is still looking for his furever home. Samson is about 4 years old and the sweetest boy you could ever meet. He is a very interesting mixed breed and extremely handsome. He is a big, 80-pound boy, but he has short legs like a bassett, while his big head looks more like an Akita. Samson gets along with other dogs, he’s doing pretty well with cats, he loves children and is super sweet and gentle. He even has his own Facebook page, thanks to his amazing foster family. If you would like to meet Samson, please complete an application at www.mprescues.org, or attend the adoption event at MarrVelous Pet Rescues from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 30.
