BREAKS MULTIPLE SCHOOL RECORDS
Keys track squads are heating up with record-breaking action just a month before district meets.
Marathon competed at the Monsignor Pace Open on March 13, picking up first-place finishes in three events. Sophomore distance phenom Vance Bursa completed a mile in 4:46 – 12 seconds in front of his nearest competitor. Junior Mason Buxton won the javelin with a monster throw of 130’4”, then took third on the track in the 800m run.
Kayesha Christian won the triple jump with a 30’6” leap and placed third in long jump. Senior Nicole Merryman’s second-place shot put throw set a new school record of 9.59m and teammates Justice Lee Isom and Janiya Pyfrom placed third in javelin and discus, respectively.
On the track, the girls 4x100m squad of Christian, Pyfrom, Abrianna Marshall and Daysi Williams took third at the meet, setting a new school record of 53.89s.
Key West spent Mar. 17 at the Calvary Christian Invitational, competing against the best in South Florida. The boys took fourth place out of a field of 14 and the girls came in second. Key West’s relay teams finished strong, with the girls’ 4x100m squad (Dazmine Jenkins, Valerie Thene, Nikole Tomita notable accomplishments in field events were Anabel Portuondo’s thirdplace pole vault and Abigail Cowan’s third-place long jump. On the track, Perloff finished second in the 400m hurdles and third in the 100m hurdles, and Chadic placed second in the open 400m.

On the boys side, Suharevskis Niks-Davis won the pole vault with an 11’11.75” clear while Kevon Mills won the high jump. Josh Canterbury took third place in discus while teammate Colbin Hill ran the 3200m fast enough for a second-place medal. The Conchs’ 4x800m team of Hill, Lucas Montiel, William Forster and Logan Phillips and their 4x100m squad of Mills, Clerf Alexandre, Shane LaVallee and James Reynolds both finished third.
All three Keys teams will be gearing up for district races beginning April 19 for Key West and April 20 for Coral Shores and Marathon.
