HEALING UNDER PRESSURE

Researcher attempts world record by spending 100 days in an underwater habitat

JACQUELINE HALE www.keysweekly.com

Ten-year-old Joseph Dituri could not hold his breath long enough to unscrew the zinc tab from the bottom of his father’s boat. After a few seconds, he had to resurface, catch his breath and dive back into the murky New York canal water, only to undo one more twist. After 10 minutes and little progress, Dituri’s father handed his son an underwater breathing apparatus.

“Before I dipped my head underwater, his final lesson to me, my only scuba diving lesson, was, ‘Oh, don’t hold your breath,’” Dituri said, recalling his father’s words.

As he worked beneath the surface, a small fish swam up and poked his mask, apparently reacting to seeing its own reflection. Dituri was hooked.

Forty-five years later, Dituri will attempt a world record of 100 days spent in an underwater fixed habitat, a record currently held by Bruce Cantrell and Jessica Fain at 73 days, in a mission called Project Neptune 100. The mission, from March 1 to June 9, will take place in Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, a hotel located 30 feet underwater and accessible only by scuba diving. Marine Resource Development Foundation (MRDF)/MarineLab will manage the mission.

Spending 100 days in an underwater habitat will be another major accomplishment to add to Dituri’s biography, which includes retired U.S. Navy commander and Navy saturation diver, doctorate in biomedical engineering, author of several books, chief researcher for the Undersea Oxygen Clinic and chairman of the Florida Chapter of The Explorers Club. But to Dituri and MarineLab, there is a lot more to this mission than beating a world record.

“That’s a small, teeny, tiny portion of this whole thing. Even if I only stayed 60 days but I turned a whole bunch of kids on to exploring the marine environment, that would be a win,” Dituri said.

The 100-day mission has two ma-

jor focuses: education and research.

“This whole new group of kids that's out there, if we can incentivize them to be excited about exploration, the undersea environment, research, science, some kind of STEM – science, technology, engineering, mathematics – if we can get them excited about that, we can stimulate the next version of great explorers,” Dituri said.

MarineLab has a long history of engaging young people with marine conservation. In 1984, a group of female students from Broward County stayed for multiple nights in the MarineLab Undersea Classroom in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first group of non-military, nondoctorate scientists to live underwater. Now located in its own compound in Key Largo, including the protected lagoon where Jules is located, MarineLab provides opportunities for handson experience with marine life and conservation to some 5,000 kids every year.

“What we've found is that if you take someone who doesn't have any experience with the ocean, and you introduce them to it in a controlled environment with some great, knowledgeable instructors, they make a connection,” Thane Milhoan, mission director and habitat operations manager at Jules’ Undersea Lodge, said. “And when they make that connection, then they typically tend to change their trajectory in life.”

Milhoan hopes to send 30 to 50 students, with chaperones, to join Dituri for an overnight session. They will leave as aquanauts, armed with research experience on one of the mission's science projects and short videos they created documenting their time underwater.

The underwater habitat will also serve as a “digital studio in the sea,” with social media influencers joining a lineup of top scientists to broadcast talks and demonstrations from underwater and spread the message of marine conservation to a wider audience.

Planned scientists include Mikki McComb-Kobza, executive director of Ocean First Institute; Hunter Hines,

GOVERNOR’S BUDGET INCLUDES KEYS FUNDING

DESANTIS SUPPORTS STEWARDSHIP ACT REQUEST

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ budget proposal includes millions of dollars for the Florida Keys’ delicate environment, as well as substantial funds for a local college and a housing program.

On Feb. 1, the Republican governor unveiled a $114.8-billion spending plan for the 2023-24 fiscal year, which begins July 1. DeSantis’ budget proposal for the coming year is $4.9 billion more than his spending plan for the 2022-23 fiscal year. The Florida Legislature, which has the final say over the state’s budget, approved a $112.1-billion spending plan in March 2022.

DeSantis’ budget proposal includes one of Monroe County’s top priorities for the legislative session — $20 million for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act. The program enables the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to distribute funds to Keys municipalities and utility agencies for projects that protect valuable water resources and acquire environmentally-sensitive land. Funds support canal restoration and stormwater projects.

With critical Keys programs and projects included in the governor’s budget, legislators say there’s still a long way to go before approval of the funding request.

Monroe County officials are hoping this could be the year that state legislators approve annual funding for the Stewardship Act. Each year, Keys officials and lobbyists fight to get funds included in the budget for the Stewardship Act. Some years have been successful, while others have been lackluster. A bill filed by state Rep. Jim Mooney and state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez for the upcoming session would put the Keys program on a pedestal and provide recurring funds, like critical Everglades projects get each year through the state’s Land Acquisition Trust Fund. DeSantis’ budget proposes $478.5 million from the trust fund for Everglades restoration.

In addition to funds for the Stewardship Act, the governor’s budget proposes $20 million in nonrecurring funds to construct housing primarily

to serve moderate-income residents in Monroe County. Funds would come from the State Housing Trust Fund for the State Apartment Incentive Loan program, or SAIL, which provides lowinterest loans on a competitive basis to affordable housing developers each year. Developments in the Florida Keys can use 100 percent of the units for residents with annual household incomes below 120 percent of the state or local median income, whichever is higher.

DeSantis’ budget also includes $7.5 million for the College of the Florida Keys’ operating expenses.

Statewide, the governor proposes a $200-million increase in teacher salaries and $30 million to fund a second round of recruitment bonus payments for law enforcement officers who are new to the profession or relocating from other states. DeSantis is also requesting a base rate hike for correctional officers to $23 per hour.

Permanent sales tax exemptions are also proposed within the governor’s budget for baby and toddler necessities, cribs and strollers and over-the-counter pet medications.

“Florida will fight against federal headwinds by putting forth sound fiscal policies that keep more money in the pockets of Floridians,” DeSantis said.

The Florida Keys is longing for more affordable housing, and it appears the upper island chain is getting some help from a project near the 18-Mile Stretch in Florida City.

Coral Gables-based Coral Rock Development Group recently unveiled plans to develop 13 acres of property located outside the Florida Keys into 300-plus residential apartments.

Known as the Card Sound Key Apartments, the workforce and market-rate rental housing project will be developed on vacant land on the westside of U.S. 1 where it merges with Krome Avenue and splits off to Card Sound Road.

According to Coral Rock Development Group, 342 residential rental units will include one-, two- and threebedroom options. With six four-story buildings, 20% of the units will be dedicated to workforce housing and 80% will be used as market-rate rentals. Amenities will include a Vita Course circulating the property with several workout stations, a pool, barbecue area, spacious two-story clubhouse, dog park, children’s playground and pickleball court.

Coral Rock Development Group said the site will serve three submarkets in south Miami-Dade, the gated

Ocean Reef community and the northern Florida Keys.

“We’re very pleased to unveil our plans for Card Sound Key Apartments. As the closest apartment development to Ocean Reef Club where there are 1,200 employees commuting daily, coupled with a severe housing shortage in the northern Keys and south Dade, this multifamily project will add much needed high-quality housing to the community,” said Michael Wohl, principal of Coral Rock Development Group.

Development plans for Card Sound Key Apartments were unanimously approved by the Florida City Commission in early January.

"This is particularly meaningful since most of the workforce for the Florida Keys travel to Florida City," said Florida City Mayor Otis T. Wallace.

With a project close to the Keys, Key Largo Chamber of Commerce President Elizabeth Moscynski said a worker’s ride won’t be as tedious as it is coming from Cutler Bay or Miami.

“It helps Publix, bigger stores and smaller stores,” she said. “A lot of people want to live in the Keys, but it’s hard to afford it. The project will benefit Key Largo, especially with the fact we don’t have much affordable housing here.”

A groundbreaking is set for early 2024 with completion scheduled for early 2025.

days, with Dituri as a test subject.

Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy, Dituri earned his doctorate in biomedical engineering. With the realization that, every day, an average of 22 of his fellow servicemen died by suicide, Dituri studied hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the medical use of oxygenated air at an elevated pressure to increase blood flow and oxygen levels throughout the body and accelerate healing, with the goal of treating traumatic brain injury (TBI) in veterans.

After his own TBI in a car accident in 2021, Dituri has focused on a three-pronged approach to treating TBI: physiological, physical and psychological. This approach emphasizes not only hyperbaric oxygen therapy, but also simultaneously healing bodily pain associated with the TBI event and cognitive behavioral therapy.

While in Jules’ Undersea Lodge, Dituri will conduct a series of tests as part of his research on TBI. Before, during and after the 100 days, he will take stem cell collections, an electroencephalogram to measure electrical activity in the brain, methylation and cytokine blood panels that provide insight into nutritional support needs and inflammatory response, and psychological and psychosocial exams, all to understand what happens to the body during 100 days under pressure.

With guests from organizations like the Defense POW/MIA Accounting, Dituri plans to bring awareness to the impact of PTSD and TBI on veterans, and his research on healing these injuries.

“I'm all about healing under pressure, and it's not just healing the wounds, it's healing the soul. It's talking with people about the problems,” Dituri said. “It's talking about bringing the loved ones back that we lost, and healing those people that are still here, that are left behind. We want to repatriate that person, that service member, and heal those people. So, it's healing in a lot of different ways, but healing with pressure, that's what we are all about.”

Other studies include vision tests to detect any changes after living in a confined space and experiments from other researchers to be tested at depth, including a study created by Dituri’s colleague Michael Cross with implications for growing meat in a lab. The applications for many of these experiments tie to exploration in a different extreme environment: space.

“You're going to put people in a tin can and let them stay for 200 days while they transit from here to get to Mars. Six months. ... You have to figure out how to live in a tin can. Why don't we try living in this tin can underwater first?” Dituri said.

TAKING OUT THE TRASH

Debris derby nets 13,000 pounds

As with space travel, the logistics and safety requirements of this mission to an extreme environment are pressing. The logistics are proving the most complicated, as Milhoan must arrange the delivery of cameras, phones, microphones, computer equipment, food and laundry to the habitat with a constant turnover of visitors.

The habitat, which was originally developed by Ian Koblick as La Chalupa research laboratory until he refurbished it into Jules’ Undersea Lodge, has functioned in the lagoon for over three decades. According to Koblick and Milhoan, the design leaves little concern in terms of safety. It is a positive pressure environment, meaning the pressure inside is greater than the surrounding pressure. Like an upsidedown cup placed in a tub of water, the habitat can only flood as fast as air escapes, so flooding the habitat is nearly impossible. From previous experience, Milhoan knows that Dituri could last several days without additional oxygen and, because the habitat sits at 30 feet, decompression is not needed during ascent. Milhoan will monitor the habitat from an on-surface command van with webcams, intercoms, a pressure regulator, a high-water alarm and more.

Dituri, too, is confident and ready to take on the challenge.

“There’s no apprehension. I'm not pensive at all,” Dituri said. “I'm ready to get this thing done. I'm ready to increase awareness of the marine environment. I'm ready to rejuvenate that hope that we have in exploration and science, technology, engineering and math.”

Students from Ocean Studies Charter School and the local community at large participated in the third annual Marine Debris Derby on Jan. 28.

Student and family volunteers sponsored by local organizations collected trash on the shoreline, from kayaks and from boats in order to compete for prizes in several categories and raise money for Ocean Studies’ marine science program. They met at the Caribbean Club in Key Largo to count their trash and celebrate their community service.

In total, 108 young volunteers from Ocean Studies and other local schools collected over 13,000 pounds of plastic waste and debris. In doing so they raised thousands of dollars for Ocean Studies’ marine education program.

The celebration at the Caribbean Club included competitions for different divisions and categories. In the Shoreline Division, Savannah Williams and Aubrey Williams collected the most trash, each bringing in 393 pounds of waste. The winners of the kayak division were Alex Rudolph, Hans Neill and Walker Absten, bringing in 50 pounds of waste collected from kayaks. For the team division, the “Dolphin Team” won, contributing 477 pounds. Their prizes included sailing trips, Everglades tours and fishing trips. Also included in the festival was live music from local musician Micah Gardner, a trivia competition, and catering from A Moveable Feast.

The event started in 2021, and was inspired by the monthly cleanups Ariel Poholek and his son and former Ocean Studies student Pascal Weisberger hosted at the K-8 school. With the idea of getting the school community more involved with cleanup efforts, Poholek “looked into how you could do a cleanup as a fundraiser.” Ocean Studies eventually decided on making an annual cleanup event that functioned as a fundraiser for their school’s science program through sponsorships of individual teams and participants, in which the school was rewarded by how much trash it picked up.

Ocean Studies, as a K-8 school with a specific focus on marine science, finds importance in educating its students about the dangers of environmental pollution.

“Our mission is to teach kids about the environment of the Keys and what's happening in our local environment with plastics and the changes we need to make,” said Trisha Woods, the principal at Ocean Studies. “It’s good to show kids how much trash is out there and the changes we can make when we clean up.”

Key West, 1825 Dear Mother,

This goes in a box of shells, which I bought from a New Providence vessel. They are curious, and beautiful, and intended to be divided among all my Brothers and Sisters, as they may think proper. The numbers of shells will allow them to make presents of a part to their friends. I have another box containing Marine production collected on this island, which I shall send you.

I send you also a cask of wine said to be Marseilles though, I think light Port mixes with water, it is very pleasant to drink, and we use it here at Breakfast and Supper in that way. I think you would find good for you giving strength to the stomach and system. It must be kept secure from the air, else it will soon become sower.

This wine, with a quantity of Flour, Butter, Lard, Rice & c was taken from the pirates on the coast of Cuba by the U.S. Galliot, Seagull and Brittish Schooner Union and Leon.

PIRATES IN KEY WEST?

1825

Like a joint passed around an island party, pirate stories in the Florida Keys are shared with a rapt audience. As a matter of fact, breaking out one has been known to lead to the revealing of the other.

But, based on all the available historical accounts and records, stories told of pirates in the Keys come with about the same structure and substance as those wispy tendrils of smoke rising from the bright hot cherry burning at the tip of a joint

If you ask a local, especially while passing a joint or perhaps while sipping rum, beer or some other adult beverage at one of the local watering holes, they will tell you these islands have always been home to pirates. The islands do have a history filled with stories, legends and lore of a piratical nature. Believe it or not, not every story about the pirates and their acts in the Keys is entirely accurate.

There are some really cool stories of piracy that have occurred on and around the Sunshine State’s favorite archipelago. The Florida Keys and piracy do have an interesting history. How could they not be linked? After all, Commodore David Porter and the West Indies Squadron, the anti-piracy unit in charge of clearing the local waters from their ilk, were headquartered at Key West.

The vast majority of pirates pursued by Porter and the West Indies Squadron frequented the waters off the coasts of Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula. A handful of documented cases demonstrate evidence of pirates operating closer to the Florida Keys, but those stories are far less swashbuckling than their Caribbean counterparts. Fortunately for all of us, there is one stunning firsthand account about a group of pirates on the island of Key West. The story is revealed in a letter written by William Morduit Jenners to his mother in Virginia:

FLORIDA KEYS HISTORY WITH BRAD BERTELLI

The Seagull also brought in 19 pirates, which were taken after a skirmish in which 8 others were killed. They remain on shore here Sometime, where I saw and talked with them every day in the Spanish language. A few of them appear to be gentle men, one Doctor. 14 have just gone to Havana the other 5 badly wounded still remain here.

It is not necessarily an exciting pirate story, but it does prove that there were legitimate pirates in the Florida Keys. If Porter and his men brought pirates back to Key West as prisoners, it was likely not a singular occasion. It is universally agreed that Porter was good at his job. One of the things that made him effective was that, unlike his predecessor Commodore James Biddle, when capturing pirates (even suspected pirates), Porter would hand them over to forces unencumbered by the American justice system.

Jenners’ letter indeed calls into question the idea that pirates were being hanged or otherwise dispatched in Key West during Porter’s reign or even in the years that followed. There is a popular Key West story about 12 or 18 pirates hanged from the ficus tree that grows in the middle of Captain Tony’s Saloon down on Greene Street. With no documentation corroborating the fanciful tale, it is offered as little more than another Key West story.

This is not to say that no one has ever dangled from Captain Tony’s legendary tree, because not every story told about Captain Tony’s and that ficus tree were made up to entertain tourists. As for any piratical connection, however, beyond the legendary Captain Tony himself, it likely begins and ends with the welldressed skeleton hanging behind the bar.

It should be noted, however, that if there were ever going to be a cool cat to sit around with, passing a joint back and forth and telling pirate stories, it would have been Captain Tony Tarracino. They might not have been pirate tales from the days of old but rather 20th century stories about modern Key West. Captain Tony would have known those stories like the back of his hand as most considered him to be something of a pirate himself.

Keys kids participate in football clinic with NFL players, local legends

Youth in Key West and the Lower Keys enjoyed a preseason football camp on Feb. 4 at Truman Waterfront Park. NFL free agent and former Carolina Panthers tight end Colin Thompson headed the clinic, which was offered free of charge to Keys kids interested in improving their football skills. Thompson was joined by fellow NFL tight ends Ian Thomas and Stephen Sullivan, linebacker Brandon Chubb and Carolina Panthers offensive assistant coach Jody Owens. Joining the Panthers’ crew were Key West’s own Mekhi Sargent, running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and fellow former Key West football standouts Alvin Howard, Dorian Cannon, Zach Hughes and Carson Hughes.

The day campers participated in a variety of drills and stations, focusing on perfecting techniques in blocking, running, evasive moves, catching and other nuances of the game.

Thompson’s family has vacationed in the Keys for years and now runs several businesses in Key West. He said his family has felt so welcome that he offered the camp to give back to a community that he has grown to love.

Dubbed the Iron Man of the ’Canes, Holly’s ability to pull and run for downfield blocks enabled the Coral Shores offense to be successful. The 6-foot-5-inch 285-pound senior tackle anchored the Coral Shores offensive line. Holly will play at Holmes Community College in Mississippi.

Arrington is a recognizable force the moment he steps onto the field. His incredible stats speak for themselves: Arrington, who’s set to play at the U.S. Naval Academy, amassed 64 tackles, 23 of them for a loss, plus 19 assists, 19.5 sacks, one touchdown, one fumble recovery, 28 pressures, two forced fumbles, two pass breakups, three blocked punts and two blocked PATs.

PALMER TRINITY PLAYS POSTSEASON VILLAIN FOR KEYS SOCCER SQUADS

Key West boys are lone remaining team in the postseason

After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, the Key West Lady Conchs lost to MAST Academy on Jan. 26 in the FHSAA District 16 4A semifinals. Key West ended its season with a 10-7 record and looks strong for 2024, despite graduating five seniors this year.

Marathon’s Lady Fins enjoyed their first winning season in six years, going 8-7 with a quarterfinal win against Somerset Silver Palms. Palmer Trinity ended their season when the Lady Fins suffered an 8-0 loss to the Falcons on Jan. 30. The winning is unlikely to end for Marathon next year, as they will lose just two seniors and return their top six scorers, including FHSAA 3A District 16 scoring leader Rain Banks.

Coral Shores junior Robert Tempkin scored the lone goal in the Hurricanes’ semifinal win against Somerset Silver Palms on Jan. 27. TRACY MCDONALD/Keys Weekly

The Coral Shores Lady ’Canes won their district semifinal match against Somerset South Homestead on Jan. 30. Sophia Jans, Kai Redruello and Grace Goodwin each scored one goal in the 3-2 victory, earning Coral Shores a chance at the FHSAA District 16 Championship. In the big game on Feb. 1, Palmer Trinity came away with the win, defeating the Hurricanes 8-0 and ending a highly successful season for Coral Shoes. The district runner-up team managed an impressive 10-5 record. Even with eight seniors graduating this year, Coral Shores looks to have a solid base to build from in 2024.

On the boys side, Key West lost a heartbreaker to St. Brendan on Jan. 30 in their district semifinal match. The Conchs fell to the Sabres 1-0, but Key West’s power ranking was strong enough to qualify them for an at-large playoff berth. The 11-4-2 Conchs played MAST Academy on Feb. 8 in the regional quarterfinals, placing them within three games of the state championship match. Results from the game were not yet available at press time.

Marathon’s boys worked up a late-season run, including a win against Keys Gate in the quarterfinals, earning them a semifinal matchup on Jan. 27. A familiar foe took the Fins out of contention this year as Marathon lost to Palmer 8-0. The Dolphins will keep a good portion of their core, losing just four seniors from their roster. The Fins racked up a winning record, going 10-9 on the season.

Coral Shores did not post a winning record this season, but the ’Canes peaked at the right time, cruising to a win over Somerset South Homestead in the district quarterfinals and managing to come away with a W in a hard-fought battle against Silver Palms on Jan. 27. Robert Temkin scored the lone goal of the match, sending his team to the district championship game on Jan. 31. It would be none other than Palmer Trinity that took the win, defeating the ’Canes 6-0 in the championship game. The 6-7-1 Hurricanes will lose seven seniors from their roster next season, but with their deep bench, the district runner-up team looks to be strong again in 2024.

’CANES BOYS BASKETBALL STAYS UNBEATEN IN ’23

Coral Shores stretches win streak to 11 with playoffs starting

The Coral Shores machine just keeps on winning. The 17-5 ’Canes have not lost in 2023, with their latest win a decisive 6028 victory over Marathon to close out their regular season on Feb. 3. Coral Shores received a bye for the first round of the playoffs and beat Palmer in the quarterfinals, 63-33, on Feb. 7

Marathon is slated to play Somerset Silver Palms for their opening district playoff matchup. The Stallions of Silver Palms narrowly defeated Marathon by 3 points on Dec. 1, making for an exciting rematch.

Key West basketball’s regular season ended on Feb. 4 with an overtime 76-73 loss to Palmer Trinity. The 4-18 Conchs faced LaSalle in the opening round of FHSAA District 16 4A playoff action on Feb. 7.

The Lady Fins of Marathon were the lone team to advance past the first round of their postseason tournament bracket. While Coral Shores and Key West suffered season-ending defeats to Somerset Academy South Homestead and Killian, respectively, on Jan. 31, Marathon defeated Westminster Christian 57-46 on the same day before falling to top-seeded Somerset Academy Silver Palms, 76-33, the following day.

RELEASING THE TENSION

Maintaining balance and posture through yoga

On Wednesday mornings between 9:30 and 10 a.m., people begin to fill the community room at St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church for the JOY Center yoga class led by Kat Wheatley. Each picks their spot and lays out their yoga mat. Some then sit on the mat stretching while others talk quietly among themselves until Wheatley enters the room.

When she enters, quiet attention is directed her way. She lays out her mat, surveys the room, speaking softly to those who greet her, answering questions, then naturally flowing into an explanation of yoga philosophy. As Wheatley speaks she continues to survey the room, noticing which students are on mats and which are in chairs, mentally setting the stage for the class.

The room becomes still as each participant focuses on their yoga practice. Wheatley leads them through stretching, mountain pose, downward dog, warrior one and two. She then demonstrates warrior three pose for those who want to challenge themselves. Between poses she encourages the participants to shake out tension before moving to the next.

“When I look around the room watching how students are completing asanas (poses) I am assessing strengths and areas for improvement, I am noticing which students are favoring a hip, arm or other body part. It is important to assess, not assume the level of my students’ practice,” she said.

Wheatley, a long-time resident of Key Largo, has been a teacher and healer in the Upper Keys yoga community for 10 years. She has a broad range of teaching experience from gentle chair yoga to power yoga.

“I am a firm believer that everyone can do yoga. Your yoga practice will change over the years; I know mine has. We don’t have to stop doing yoga because our bodies have changed. It is important to understand that yoga helps us to maintain our balance, posture and manage our lives,” Wheatley said.

“As I age I see the gap between myself and older people narrowing,” she said. “By teaching at the JOY Center I am involved with a diverse group who are having a strong, fulfilling yoga experience as we age and continue to improve our yoga practice.”

The last pose during class at the JOY Center is Savasana. The participants lie on their back, and as Wheatley softly guides them, the atmosphere of the room calms into quiet breathing as each student relaxes. As one student said, “During Savasana the sounds of the outside seem to quietly slip away. But, as you are lying there, quiet and still, you realize it is not the outside world becoming quieter. It is you.”

When you hear the term line dancing, does your brain automatically think country-western? Mine does. Even when you Google line dancing, several well-known dictionaries say it’s a country-western dance.

However, after meeting with accomplished line dancing professional and instructor Carlene Jarboe, I learned line dancing is much more than some popular country songs.

Jarboe has been teaching line dancing at the JOY Center in the Upper Keys since last fall. The JOY

Center (Just Older Youth Inc.) is a nonprofit founded in 2017 by a group of local visionaries as a space for creative and innovative programs. The JOY Center does not discriminate; however, it was created for people 50 and older. It provides programs where people can make friendships, learn and grow and have a sense of purpose.

“The JOY Center is primarily based at St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church. However, space was a challenge for the line dancing. So, when Annie Onsgard, programs manager at Founders Park, reached out to see how we can work together, it was a great opportunity to move

the line dancing to Founders in January,” said Kali Evans, program facilitator at the JOY Center. And each week, the turnout has increased.

Jarboe kicks off our conversation by saying, “My motto is if the music is good, you dance. I don’t care how people dance, they can freestyle in the corner, and I try to gear the class to the level of the student. I start with the basic dance, then I try to build on that dance, learning a new step with the next dance.”

Jarboe adds, “When a new student is beginning, you must also teach them the terms. And everybody makes mistakes, and I emphasize that to everyone. So mistakes are no big deal.”

There’s a wide variety of line dancing music, and Jarboe teaches all types.

“The line dance scene nowadays is only about 15% country. There are pockets of Florida that don’t do any country at all; Latin, tango, couples, waltz, lyrical and more. I like all types of music but I am pickier about rap.”

It was fascinating to learn that the Bunny Hop, circa the early 1950s, is one of the original line dances, and the Electric Slide (still very popular at weddings) is from 1976.

In addition to weekly classes with the JOY Center, Jarboe is constantly learning new steps. “I started line dancing in 2014 up in Pinecrest. I take three hours of dance class every Tuesday, and the workshops are in Orlando.”

Jarboe and her husband, Capt. Larry, moved back to the Keys in 2013. They originally lived here in 1977 but then moved to Maryland in 1981 to raise their children. Now retired, Jarboe’s husband is a local musician and runs sunset and eco charter trips on his pontoon boat.

Jarboe has always been into dance and even gymnastics. She started dancing in first grade. “Tap, ballet, jazz, acrobats, ballroom — you name it,” she said. “I was also a gymnast in college and taught 27 years of tap dancing as an adult at a studio in Maryland.”

With so many options, how does she conduct the weekly classes? “Sometimes I go with the flow, but today I made a list; however, I didn’t get to all the dances. The class was 45 minutes, and we got to do five dances.”

How does she remember? “You have to practice. The teacher I learn from is in Pinecrest. She learns them ahead of time, and then we have already learned them when we go to Orlando.”

“In Orlando, I am trying to learn two new dances.” How do you pick? “The choreographer or the teacher comes out and does the dance, so you get to see the dance and hear the music. You get a preview. If I don’t like the music, I will not waste my brain cells. There is a list, and you circle the ones you like. The workshops last all day, and there are three rooms to host the lessons.”

Key West trip spotlights tireless heroes and an endangered species

HUCKLEBERRY

REEF THE FOX

Hi friends! Reef the fox here with your weekly “Reef’s Report.” On Feb. 3, my mom, the founder of Pawsitive Beginnings Inc., joined a group of amazing nonprofit leaders and volunteers up and down the Keys for the Unsung Heroes celebration at the Marriott Beachside Resort in Key West. It’s organized by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys to spotlight the community’s tireless volunteers who are the true stars of the Keys’ nonprofit organizations.

On the way home from the event, my mom told me that veterinarian Gerry Diethelm and she saw a Key deer. Apparently they are just my size. I don’t mean like, as in eat, that’s gross, I mean to play with. I’m sure everyone reading this knows what a Key deer is, but just in case you are reading this online and have no idea what I’m talking about, I’ll go ahead and explain.

Reef is a red fox that was saved from a fur farm. He now lives in Key Largo with his human, Nicole Navarro.

The Key deer are a member of a subspecies of the Virginia white-tailed deer. Key deer are found only in the Florida Keys. While their historic range probably went from Key Vaca south to Key West, their range now includes about 26 islands from Big Pine Key to Sugarloaf Key and they can swim from one island to another.

Key deer average height is between 24 and 32 inches. It is thought that they came to the Keys from the mainland across a long land bridge and were isolated from their relatives, somewhere from 6,000 to 12,000 years ago, when the Wisconsin Glacier melted. The waters rose and divided this land bridge into the islands of the Florida Keys.

The first documented mention of the Key deer was in the memoirs of Hernando Escalante Fontaneda, a 13-year-old Spanish sailor who was on his way to Spain from Cartagena, and was shipwrecked near “Cayo Vaca,” the modern-day Marathon area. The Key deer is protected as an endangered species by the Federal Endangered Species Act and as a federally-designated endangered species by Florida’s Endangered and Threatened Species Rule.

So anywho, that’s about all for this week. Go ahead and visit us at pawsitivebeginnings.org

Mom just launched some brand new merchandise that an artist from Amsterdam created for us. How cool is that?

Until next time, Reef, over and out!

Huckleberry is about 12 weeks old, and he is just the sweetest, smartest puppy. He is very cuddly. He loves to play with toys and absolutely loves playing with other dogs, so he really needs a home with other dogs. He is mostly potty trained, and is just an all-around perfect puppy. Huckleberry’s primary DNA results show him to be 30% chihuahua and 25% lab/shepherd. He is an awesome mix of small and medium/large dogs and should grow to be a perfect medium size doggie. He is available through MarrVelous Pet Rescues. If you are interested in making Huckleberry a member of your family, please complete an application at www. mprescues.org/adoption-application. Park ranger discusses plants and survival

The History of Diving Museum’s Immerse Yourself lecture features park ranger Chris Herald on native plants and survival on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.

COASTLOVE HOSTS OCEAN FOREST CLEANUP

An upcoming forest cleanup in Key Largo is seeking help from the public. Coastlove, the Fabien Cousteau Learning Center and the University of Miami Sustainability Initiative are hosting a cleanup at Ocean Forest, located at 1093 County Road 905 on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. Reusable bags, gloves and water will be available to volunteers (bring a water bottle to stay hydrated). Volunteers will be walking through undeveloped areas with lowhanging branches and uneven paths. As a result, the cleanup is not recommended for young children. Visit coastlove.org/ events/ocean-forest-cleanup to learn more and sign up.

Herald is a ranger for the Islamorada area state parks, which encompass Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, Indian Key Historic State Park, Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park and San Pedro Underwater Archeological Preserve State Park. Born and raised in Tampa, Herald worked at a living history museum, interpreting historic farm techniques to youths and adults. This experience gave way to his decision to pursue a career with the Florida Park Service where he could fulfill his passion for teaching while helping to protect Florida’s natural resources.

In this talk, Herald will showcase the significance of flora found in the Florida Keys by connecting native plants, survival skills and indigenous uses. This presentation will complement the art and displays which celebrate the coastal flora in the museum’s new featured exhibit, Dive Into Art: Edge of the Sea. Designed to introduce all levels to native flora of the Keys, the program eases participants into learning basic plant identification, distribution and uses.

Gluten-free jellies made from sea grape, prickly pear cactus, and papaya will be available to taste after the program.

The last ticket to see the exhibits will be sold at 6:15 p.m.

Reserve a seat by calling the museum at 305-664-9737 or emailing the community outreach team at programs@divingmuseum.org. To register for the Zoom meeting, visit divingmuseum.org. For those unable to attend in-person or virtually, the session will be recorded and posted to the HDM YouTube channel. This month’s Immerse Yourself sponsor is Dutton Law Group.

SAFE PRODUCTS FOR PRECIOUS SEAS

A majority of Fourth Element’s products are made of ghost fishing nets, which turtles can find themselves tangled in while in the waters.

Florida Keys divers continued to experience some bumpy conditions last week. Hopefully, we’ll see some calmer seas in the coming week.

The sport of scuba diving is a very gearintense sport. This appeals to most avid divers, but choosing which equipment manufacturer can be confusing. There are so many and the reasons to choose one over the other can vary. But recently there have been certain companies that are rising to the top for a special reason that resonates with our way of life.

WHAT IF YOU COULD WEAR SOMETHING THAT WAS GOOD FOR THE OCEAN?

Eco-friendly products are more sought after, and certain companies have listened. Two companies that come to mind are Fourth Element, which sells diving gear, and Stream2Sea, which makes reef-friendly sunscreen and lotions.

ERIC BILLIPS

is the owner, captain and instructor at Islamorada Dive Center and Florida Keys Dive Center. He specializes in scuba, rebreather, spearfishing and captaining in the Florida Keys.

Fourth Element’s mission statement reads, “To grow the brand through the creation of innovative, high performance products for divers, freedivers and ocean advocates, expanding our presence worldwide, providing exceptional service to our customers, considering the environment every step of the way.” This is what makes them stand apart from other manufacturers. Their “ocean positive” approach is not only apparent in their products but also their packaging. They work to eliminate single-use plastic from their packaging.

Stream2Sea is the first and the only brand that ensures that all sunscreen and skin care are scientifically proven safe to fish, coral larvae and our bodies. CONTRIBUTED

The majority of their products are made from at least 30% of recycled materials like plastic bottles and ghost fishing nets. It’s truly amazing to think that my fins are made of recycled post-consumer plastic waste, and my rashguard is made of ghost fishing nets. The price is no different than similar products that aren’t helping the environment.

Another product that anyone who buys sunscreen should choose is Stream2Sea. Many may ask, why? Did you know that 14,000 tons of chemical, non-biodegradable sunscreen are deposited into our oceans every year?

Stream2Sea is the first and only brand that ensures that all its sunscreen and skin care are scientifically proven safe to fish, coral larvae and our bodies.

Founder and formulator, Florida resident and Keys enthusiast Autumn Blum is a renowned entrepreneur, chemist, ingredient aficionado and life-long ocean advocate. Blum has testified before Congress, influencing notable bans on toxic ingredients in Hawaii, the Florida Keys, the Virgin Islands and other worldwide tourist destinations negatively affected by chemical-based personal care products.

This product should be in every person’s dive bag, boat and beach bag. We all have choices in life and I know that buying eco-friendly products seems like a drop in a very huge bucket, but if you’re a drop and I’m a drop and you teach your kids to be drops, all these drops will eventually overflow that bucket. So do your due diligence and choose to purchase from companies that make it their mission to produce an eco-friendly product, like Fourth Element and Stream2Sea. For more information on these amazing companies go to www.fourthelement.com and www. stream2sea.com.
