3 FINALISTS NAMED FOR KEY WEST CITY MANAGER

COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS ABE CONN, THADDEUS COHEN & DAVID BURKE

And then there were three — finalists, that is, for the Key West city manager job: David Burke, Thaddeus Cohen and Abe Conn, all of whom already live in the Florida Keys.

Members of the local search committee, each appointed by the city commission, this week submitted their recommendations of top candidates to be invited for in-person interviews.

Six applicants made the committee members’ lists of recommended candidates, but Burke, Conn and Cohen received the most votes.

Dona Higginbotham, a consultant hired by the city to guide the search for the next city manager, first reviewed all 43 applications for the job, then submitted nine finalists to city officials and the search committee.

Burke is a retiring Navy captain who most recently has served as chief of staff for JIATF-South, the military’s elite Joint Interagency Task Force headquartered at Truman Annex in Key West. He and his family have lived in Key West since 2020 and consider the island their permanent home.

Cohen is an architect by trade who formerly worked as Key West’s planning director. His applications states he’s a project manager for MBR Construction in Fort Lauderdale, though he has been spending significant time in Key West. From 2017 to 2021, Cohen worked as a department head in charge

of growth management for Collier County, Florida, his application states.

Conn, a retired U.S. Army colonel, served three one-year tours in Afghanistan as a battalion commander and colonel in command of the Army Liaison Team in Afghanistan. He also worked for 26 years as a senior special agent for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Key West.

Conn received recommendations from five of the seven search committee members. Cohen received four recommendations from committee members and Burke received three recommendations. Applicants Albert Childress, Lisa Hendrickson and Don King, Jr. each received two recommendations.

The city commission, with Higginbotham’s guidance, now will begin to schedule in-person interviews, tours of the city, meetings with city department heads and public receptions.

Officials hope to have a city manager in place by April to provide two months of overlap before City Manager Patti McLauchlin retires in June.

The search committee members’ recommendations are as follows:

Arlo Haskell recommended: David Burke, Thaddeus Cohen, Don King Jr.

Sam Holland recommended: David Burke, Al Childress, Abe Conn and Don King Jr.

Donie Lee recommended: Thaddeus Cohen and Abe Conn.

Kurt Lewin recommended: Albert Childress, Abe Conn and Lisa Hendrickson.

Ken Sullivan recommended: Thaddeus Cohen and Abe Conn.

Peggy Ward-Grant recommended: David Burke, Thaddeus Cohen and Lisa Hendrickson.

Chris Valdez recommended: Abe Conn.

KEY WEST MAY BAN SMOKING & VAPING AT BEACHES

WHAT ELSE IS ON TAP FOR THE CITY COMMISSION THIS WEEK?

STATE RESOURCES BRING RELIEF

Migrant landings in Keys get national spotlight

Agrowing migrant crisis in the Florida Keys is garnering attention among federal and state leaders in 2023. More resources to the Keys, per recent action by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are providing relief for local law enforcement and bringing added benefits of more road and water patrols.

sage to third world countries that now is not a good time to come. You will get intercepted and sent back.”

The Martin Luther King holiday pushed this week’s Key West city commission meeting back a day, meaning it took place after presstime.

See keysweekly.com for the full report from the meeting. But here’s a look at what’s on tap for the commission to discuss and decide.

Officials will consider a new law prohibiting smoking and vaping within the boundaries of all Key West beaches.

“In 2022, the Florida Legislature allowed cities and counties to regulate cigarette smoking in parks and on beaches. The state regulation does not permit the city to regulate cigar smoke and this proposal complies with that restriction,” states a summary of the proposal by Interim City Attorney Ron Ramsingh. “In September 2022, the Key West Parks and Recreation Board passed a resolution recommending that the city commission pass this regulation. Last summer, Monroe County passed a similar ban to address their county owned parks and beaches. The penalty for violating this new ordinance will be a civil fine of $100 for the first

violation if paid within 10 days and up to $500 for subsequent violations.

Also to be considered is oversight of the Community Development Office, which administers many of the city’s affordable and workforce programs, projects, wait lists and applications.

The office is currently under the purview of the Key West Housing Authority, but the city wants to manage it. Commissioners are expected to direct City Manager Patti McLauchlin to begin a transition agreement with the housing authority to take over responsibility.

McLauchlin is expected to provide a long list of updates to the commissioners: Next steps for Mallory Square’s makeover; city manager candidates; Higgs Beach improvements and negotiations with the county over ownership of the beach; construction of the new homeless shelter and interim temporary shelter on College Road, and where things stand with a proposed, but unpopular, shortterm rental restriction and the formation of a working group to tackle the loss of long-term rentals in Key West.

The full agenda and a meeting video is available at cityofkeywest-fl.gov.

Coast Guard crews and U.S. Customs & Border Protection agents, with help from local law enforcement, were inundated with migrant interceptions on the water and landings on Keys soil to start the new year. Since late December, more than 700 migrants from Cuba and Haiti have reached the Florida shores. And since the new fiscal year started last October, Coast Guard crews have intercepted and sent back close to 5,000 Cuban migrants on the water — on pace to smash the previous year’s record of 6,182.

While reports of landings along the island chain’s shore calmed in recent days — high winds and seas and a border policy change from President Joe Biden’s administration could be playing a role — added resources are ready to handle any incoming landings.

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ issuance of a 60-day state of emergency on Jan. 6 also brought the Florida National Guard’s activation to assist with increased landings as far south as Dry Tortugas and north to the Upper Keys. Two dozen officials with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, roughly 20 Florida Highway Patrol troopers and 20 Florida Fish & WIldlife Conservation officers from various parts of the state were sent to the Keys. FWC also brought the 42-foot vessel “Fearless” with three crew members and the 85foot vessel “Gulf Sentry” with six crew members to assist agencies.

Additional resources are helping the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, which has responded with deputies to landings up and down the Keys for many months. Sheriff Rick Ramsay said that’s allowing deputies to respond to calls in the community as Florida Highway Patrol troopers deal with the migrant landings.

“The boots on the ground are helping. The National Guard is doing a good job,” Ramsay said. “They have a Black Hawk flying offshore looking for and identifying and intercepting migrants before they make landfall. With a strong ground presence and air element, we’re going to send a mes-

Extra troopers in the Keys mean more law enforcement on the road. Ramsay said troopers in cars, SUVs and on motorcycles are also staying busy dealing with speeders and other traffic infractions.

“The bad is we’re dealing with an increase in migration. The good thing is we have more resources here to help us with response and visibility.”

Ramsay credited the work of the Coast Guard and Customs & Border Protection with the resources they’ve had to deal with the crisis. He also commended DeSantis, U.S. Sen. Rick Scott and Coast Guard Rear Admiral Brendan McPherson for infusing more manpower to deal with the landings.

DeSantis, in a recent news conference, said the Coast Guard requested state assistance to handle the vast number of vessels coming to shore. DeSantis, a Republican, said he wanted to mitigate the damage from what he called Democrat Biden’s “disastrous border policies.” DeSantis also said the state will remove migrant vessels from Keys properties for free.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio recently visited the Keys to witness the recent surge in migrants arriving from Cuba and Haiti and the response among federal, state and local officials. He joined the Coast Guard’s air operations and sat down with leaders from the various agencies. He also voiced criticism of the Biden administration’s “lax border security measures.”

“When migrants arrive, state governments, local communities and other emergency personnel must spend valuable time, labor and resources to provide medical care, personnel processing and other critical space to look after hundreds of migrants that land unannounced and demand immediate attention. This diversion of resources hamstrings local and state efforts to assist Americans in need of help,” Rubio wrote in a letter to Alejandro Mayorkas, Department of Homeland Security secretary.

The College of the Florida Keys held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 18 to celebrate the nearcompletion of its CFK Academy, a charter high school on the college’s Key West campus.

The school aims to enroll 85 students in its first year, and then increase that enrollment to about 220 students over five years, said Jonathan Gueverra, the college president.

The goal of CFK Academy, Gueverra said, is to enable students to graduate from high school with both a diploma and an associate’s degree, which could eliminate two years’ worth of costly college tuition for students ultimately seeking a bachelor’s degree.

“The state of Florida has provided catalyst funds for charter schools on college campuses so

tudents in the Florida Keys will have a new option when it comes to high school this coming fall. With a charter high school on the college campus, students will be able to take college-level classes for college credit without traveling back and forth from Key West High School to the college, as Key West High School students do, for traditional dual-enrollment classes.

“We’ll offer seamless schedules, and parents don’t have to worry about transportation between two schools, even if they’re only a mile or so apart,” Gueverra said.

“We want to do anything we can to make things more convenient and conducive for them. The students will also get exposure and access to our career, technical and apprenticeship programs.”

The new CFK Academy building will have the same security requirements as traditional high schools, and college students will not have access to the high school building, said Brittney Snyder, executive vice president of the college.

BAHAMA VILLAGE EXHIBIT ON DISPLAY

DEADLINE FOR ARTISTS TO APPLY IS FEB. 7

The Monroe County Art in Public Places (AIPP) committee and Florida Keys Council of the Arts has a call to visual artists to become qualified as public artists. The Monroe County Art in Public Places Ordinance mandates that 1% of new county building construction costing a minimum of $500,000, and renovations costing a minimum of $100,000, be set aside to fund this program. The AIPP committee reviews and recommends projects to the Board of County Commissioners, and is responsible for the commission and purchase of art. Artists who are approved through this process become eligible to apply to all calls including upcoming projects: Key West International Airport expansion, Monroe County Library branch renovations and more.

Application requirements include an artist statement,

current resume, five to 10 images of recent artwork and a cover page. A workshop is available for interested artists to attend on Friday, Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. via Zoom. The Zoom link, application and more information are at keysarts.com.

The deadline for applications is 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. Applications must be submitted electronically to the Monroe County Purchasing Department. Artists must meet the criteria in the initial application process to become qualified. They will then be eligible to receive requests for proposals (RFPs) issued by Monroe County for five years, as well as for the City of Key West’s public art program.

CUSTOM HOUSE FEATURES HISTORY AND CULTURE

Key West Art & Historical Society last week opened a new exhibit that explores the history and culture of the often-overlooked segment of the community – former and current residents of Bahama Village.

“Bahama Village: Relics of a Fading Community” will be on display in the Bryan Gallery at the Key West Museum of Art & History, 281 Front St., Key West until March 19.

History and stories are woven together through various events that shaped the black and indigenous cultures of Key West.

In the early 1800s and 1900s, the black and indigenous community of Key West was skilled and hardworking. Many early settlers migrated to the island from St. Augustine, the Bahamas, and Cuba, and they brought their skills, education and culture. These settlers contributed significantly to the island’s development and included African slaves who were imported by slaveholders to assist in the expansion of the island. Free blacks relocating to Key West were some of the first to become educated in America. They believed strongly in

education, which began at home and in church basements, until the establishment of the segregated Frederick Douglass School in 1870. The island’s black community developed around, and enmeshed in, an area that is now referred to as Bahama Village.

“In collaboration with Florida Humanities, this exhibition aims to build cultural equity by telling narratives of the black community’s significant contributions to local culture and industry,” said Cori Convertito, curator for the Key West Art & Historical Society. “We seek to redress a serious omission: that the substantial contributions of people of color are under-represented in our island’s historical narrative. The contributions of these skilled workers have been marginalized, when in truth, their contributions were vital and valuable.”

Never-before-on-view objects include a football helmet and shoulder pads from Frederick Douglass School, musical instruments from the estate of William McKinzie, a 19th-century Sanchez family bible and a suit once belonging to illustrious local musician Coffee Butler. These items, along with several others, will tell the inspiring history, culture and contributions of the black residents.

Visitors can help celebrate the 20th “birthday” of the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory Saturday, Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a kid-centric family fun day and free admission to the renowned attraction at 1316 Duval St.

One of only three major butterfly facilities in Florida, the conservatory houses more than 60 species of live butterflies in a climate-controlled, 5,000-square-foot glassenclosed tropical habitat.

Visitors can walk among the butterflies, sometimes called “flowers of the sky,” and observe their behavior in the rainforest-like environment that also is home to over 20 varieties of exotic birds, lush butterfly-attracting plants and two spectacular pink flamingos named Rhett and Scarlett.

Attractions during the Jan. 21 “birthday party” will include crafts and activities for kids and families, a face-painting booth, a bounce house, picnic-style food, games, giveaways, vendors offering appealing wares and some kid-friendly surprises.

Each family in attendance will receive a butterfly host plant or nectar-source plant to take home.

Key West Mayor Teri Johnston will make a special proclamation commemorating the facility’s twodecade milestone.

As well as viewing the conservatory’s winged inhabitants, attendees can observe sea creatures in a Key West Aquarium touch tank

and interact with animals from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm.

The 13,000-square-foot Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory opened in January 2003 after many years of research and development by co-founders George Fernandez and Sam Trophia, an acclaimed butterfly artist whose work graces the on-site gallery.

Today its offerings include daily explorations, guided twilight tours and small-group “flamingle” encounters with Rhett and Scarlett.

SCHOOL DISTRICT HONORS NEDA JACKSON

KEY WEST AIRPORT SEES 1.4M PASSENGERS IN 2022 JUST 4%

FEWER THAN RECORD - SETTING 2021

Key West airport was nearly as popular in 2022 as it was during the record-setting, pandemic-prompted 2021, states a year-end report from Richard Strickland, Monroe County director of airports.

In addition, seven passenger boarding jet bridges will provide all-weather access linking the terminal and aircraft, while an extended passenger bridge will connect the existing terminal building with the new concourse.

Neda Jackson, lead math teacher at Key West High School, has been named the Monroe County School District Teacher of the Year. She has served the students and families for the past 21 years, teaching classes ranging from liberal arts math to algebra II honors. She has also served as a math coach, athletic director, activities co-director, coach, social media contact and club sponsor.

“Neda Jackson is a brilliant educator. Her deep understanding of math concepts allows her to create multiple pathways for students to learn with hands-on projects that show how math has application to the real world,” Superintendent Theresa Axford said. “Her students succeed because she believes that every student can be successful if he or she tries their best. It’s a winning combination. I am so pleased that she has been selected as Monroe County’s District Teacher of the Year.”

“My objective is to exceed students’ expectations as a teacher and to make a difference in their lives,” Jackson said. “I hope to inspire my students of all levels and help them reach their goals.”

“Neda is an advocate for all students, particularly our students most at risk for not graduating,” said Larry Schmiegel, Key West High School principal. “She has impeccable work ethic and works tirelessly to ensure all students are active contributors to the learning

environment. She sets high expectations for herself and others around her.”

Jackson earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida and began teaching for MCSD in 2001 at Key West High School. Her diligent efforts at supporting students who need to pass the state math requirement has resulted in an increased number of students graduating. In addition to teaching a range of math classes, she has engaged in professional development, most recently training for the Mathematic B.E.S.T. Standards and she has designed and implemented lessons aligned to the new standards using an abundance of teaching strategies and technology. Her extracurricular work is extensive and she is always willing to assist with after school activities.

The selection committee noted Jackson’s dedication to student achievement, her experience and expertise in subject area content, and her depth of school involvement as reasons that made her stand out from the other excellent candidates.

Those candidates include Christina Belotti (MHS), Cynthia Boyd (PKS), Ali Ferguson (POI), Stacie Gonzalez (SSE), Crystal Hendricks (HOB), Malla Horner (SLS), Cheyenne Pepper (GAE), Diana Ruiz (CSHS), and Veronika Valdes (KLS).

A total of 1.42 million passengers traveled through Key West International Airport in 2022 — just 4% fewer travelers than in 2021, when COVID recovery and international restrictions prompted unprecedented travel to Key West. The 2022 numbers also surpassed the 2019 passenger count of a then-record-setting 969,069 passengers thanks to increased flight service, states Strickland’s report.

“By comparison, the 2022 numbers are quite impressive,” he said. “My staff continually works hard to keep operations running smoothly, which is crucial as we embark on the Concourse A project.”

The $100 million improvement project broke ground in November 2022.

The Concourse A terminal construction is projected to take about 2½ years and be finished in summer 2025.

The new second-level concourse will feature nearly 50,000 square feet of space, including an extensive contemporary departure area, additional baggage areas and an upgraded checkpoint that supports up to four security lanes.

Currently, six carriers — Allegiant, American, Delta, Jet Blue, Silver and United — serve Key West International Airport with daily nonstop flights.

Strickland’s report also mentions 2022 milestones that included:

Unanimous approval from the Board of County Commissioners to build Concourse A.

The successful sale of $41.34 million in airport revenue bonds to finance a portion of the project.

The award of nearly $70 million in grants to fund the Concourse A project. The largest portion of the grants was from the Florida Department of Transportation at $39.8 million, while the rest were a combination of COVID-19 relief grants, FAA Airport Improvement Program and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law grant funds.

A reported economic impact of $1.6 billion, according to the Florida Department of Transportation, up from $857 million in its 2019 economic impact report.

PALM WARBLERS, POETS, PROSE

Apalm warbler in breeding season tends to glow up. The streaks that line the breast and belly sharpen and get more distinct. The breast itself brightens to a yellow closer to that of a freshly painted school bus. The rufous cap on the crown of its head gets rufouser.

... is a photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher. He has lived in Key West for more than 25 years and may no longer be employable in the real world. He is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society.

You see them that way sometimes, but usually briefly, late in the spring, when they are about to head north to find a spruce-lined bog and hatch some eggs. But mostly in the Keys, where they live from September to late March, you see them in their non-breeding plumage, which is duller and far less distinct – the avian equivalent of a housecoat and curlers.

The thing about palm warblers is you don’t need to know anything about their plumage to identify them. They are given away by their telltale tail twitch. (Say it five times fast.) Sometimes their tails twitch in a constant meter, like they’re bouncing an invisible ball. Sometimes the twitch is arrhythmic and seemingly random. But it’s never more than five or so seconds between twitches.

No one knows why they twitch their tails like this. What is the point of a creature evolving with a compulsive, possibly autonomic, behavior that burns energy and, to the human eye at least, serves no purpose? There are other birds with similar seemingly autonomic bodily motions – Louisiana waterthrushes and spotted sandpipers, for instance. The one thing these birds have in common is they all breed, or spend most of their time, near water. Some have theorized that the tail bopping and the body rocking mimics the rhythm of moving water, and is possibly a form of camouflage. But it’s a theory that’s never felt right to me. If it’s a motion that draws my eye, how could it make things more difficult for a predator’s eye?

The whys of all this are something I’m pretty sure will never be answered. How do you ask a bird why it does what it does? How many of our own actions are a mystery to ourselves?

But the question flashes across my brain, pretty much every time I see a palm warbler, though that flash may not last much longer than a tail twitch.

I spent a lot of time watching palm warblers, and having little flashes, this weekend, not that I was seeking them out. (They’re probably the most common songbird in the Keys in winter. They are the opposite of hard to find.) But I was at the Key West Literary Seminar, which was held for the second year at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater, and there was a small group – never more than three birds – that kept flitting in and out of the audience. They’d land on the chair, then on the guy wires for the tent, then on the stage, the speaker stand, the microphone, and the chair again. Then they’d flit off, only to return a few minutes later to start jumping around on things again in a different order. They’d get close to people, but not so close they could get grabbed. (They know how fast they are.)

Meanwhile, on stage, great writers were saying great things. The theme this year was “Singing America: A Celebration of Black Literature.” (Full disclosure: My wife is president of the KWLS board.)

I was a little trepidatious about what might get said with a cast of black authors in front of a predominantly white audience, but the most awkward it got was when a women in the audience recalled reading “Little Black Sambo” when she was a child in the 1930s, and wanted to know if that book was considered racist. Everyone on stage, and about half the audience, gave a very fast, “Yes!” Someone, I believe the novelist Deesha Philyaw, added,

“And so was the restaurant!” And everyone moved on to more interesting things without missing a beat.

Mostly the weekend was a rolling cavalcade of great speakers and readers. I wasn’t taking notes, but I can remember a lot of great things. Tananarive Due, who landed a day late after a delayed West Coast red eye, got rushed to the stage, and gave a mind bogglingly warm and erudite 45-minute disquisition on Afrofuturism. Tayari Jones, who talked about finding inspiration while eavesdropping at a mall food court, and who hilariously described being at a reading once and having an old woman threaten her with her cane because Jones’ last novel did not conform to certain expected narrative tropes.

S.A. Cosby, a writer I admire to no end – read “Blacktop Wasteland” if you haven’t – whose hard-driving thrillers can tell you more about race in America than any 10-foot stack of scholarly papers, conveyed a deep appreciation for the success he’s found in recent years, as well as a love for the broad array of other writers and artists who inspired him to get there.

Nadege Green brought her Miami cool as a light touch moderator. Rowan Ricardo Phillips, Kevin Young, Jericho Brown and Cornelius Eady – a murderer’s row of contemporary American poetry – reading their own work, but then riffing in conversation about all the other poets they admired. (A lot of these readings and conversations will eventually be posted to YouTube.)

For a while I was thinking these were two separate worlds – a Venn diagram that didn’t touch, with birds in one circle, and writers in another. Two things combined are not always synergistic.

The thing that counters that, though, is that nothing on this planet exists in a separate world. The circles always touch, cross, intersect.

One of the things I like most about birds is the way they force you out of your own head, the way they make you question the context – the ways and hows – of their lives, and therefore the context of your own life. It’s a constant compare and contrast.

Perhaps the greatest thing about reading is you get to live in someone else’s head for a while, share their experiences. Hopefully learn from them. There are few more powerful or incisive ways to make sense of each other’s lives than through stories. But it is also a constant compare and contrast.

So maybe that’s the overlap in the Venn. It’s the way to get out of your own head. That avenue of, you hope, greater understanding.

HUMOR

MILES TO GO WHAT’S IN A WORD?

This week’s

announcement of two Jimmy Buffett concerts in Key West, Feb. 9 and 11, prompted the usual “Buffett buzz” around town — and prompted us to bring you…

‘LOCAL’ SIGNS JIMMY BUFFETT IS COMING TO TOWN

10. A bunch of retired people in the Keys are currently barking about how Jimmy ruined Key West … as they enjoy a retirement built off the spoils of Jimmy Buffett in Key West.

9. Somewhere at every other bar, an old local is telling bullshit stories about how he and Jimmy used to fish and smoke together.

8. Rumors of who’s joining Jimmy on stage will be abundant. And none of them will be true.

7. “I just saw Jimmy in a baseball cap riding his bike down Fleming Street!” said everyone. (Note: Everyone is lying).

6. J.L. is getting over 5,000 texts from people wanting concert tickets.

5. Every local will remind you that a certain Buffett lyric is about them or their cousin. This also is not true.

4. There will be over 40 rumors of secret Buffett concerts all over town Some of these could be true.

3. There are a bunch of people at the Chart Room Bar, right now, who claim to know more about Jimmy’s personal life than Jimmy actually knows.

2. Every local who pretends to dislike Jimmy’s music … is now clamoring to be the first to post about his shows on social media.

1. Those same locals who pretend to dislike Jimmy’s music … will all be at Jimmy’s shows.

MANDY

MILES

drops stuff, breaks things and falls down more than any adult should. She’s married to a saintly — and handy — fisherman, and has been stringing words together in Key West since 1998.

(AS MANY POINTS AS POSSIBLE)

“Ajou” is not a word.

Well, not in English, anyway. (And the existence of an Ajou University somewhere in Korea doesn’t change that fact.)

Glop, however, IS a word. A legitimate word. In English. (It’s “a sticky and amorphous substance, typically unpleasant. A glop of grape jelly stained the toddler’s shirt.”)

Last Wednesday, a wellplaced “glop” landed me 24 points, but was indeed unpleasant for certain others, particularly the one who was still advocating for ajou’s place in the English language.

The above “discussions,” debates and disparaging comments weren’t part of some high-minded, intellectual discussion of linguistics and evolving vocabulary. Not even close.

Not at all. Rather, this is what happens when a sweet, well-meaning colleague hangs a magnetic Scrabble board in a newspaper and media office. Things deteriorate quickly among coworkers who are also friends.

Our office Scrabble board is an ingenious version of the classic crossword game: a dry erase scoreboard, magnets on the backs of the letter tiles and slim metal bookmark-type placards. Players write their name on the front of said placard (DON’T use a Sharpie) and affix seven magnetic letters to its underside, concealing them from other players when the name placards hang from the bottom of the board.

Its design is impressively clever and allows for a stopstart game to accommodate actual work obligations. (A

simple dry erase dot on the scoreboard denotes whose turn is next.)

Before the first two words had intersected on the board, we were debating nuances and consulting the official Scrabble rules.

In our typical, cynical fashion, we immediately recognized the potential for cheating if players choose their replacement letters immediately after their turn.

“Wait, so she just picked her letters then heads to her office — and her COMPUTER?

To look up words with those letters. I’m calling bulls--t on that.”

So we immediately ruled that no one can pick their next set of letters until right before their next turn.

Mind you, these people are all friends. Not just coworkers, but friends. We choose to hang out with each other outside of work. We text each other on weekends. We have inside jokes that would never pass muster with any human resources director.

But give us seven letters and an accessible triple-word score and we devolve into “Lord of the Flies.”

One of us is taking too long to decide on his word. Another picked her next letters before her next turn. Still another (me) misquoted a rule about blank tiles.

We’re innately competitive and cynical. Scrabble among word people is like Monopoly among Realtors.

Oh, and the final score of our first office Scrabble game? MM-160; SM-129; AB-125; BM101. But who’s counting?

Who are we kidding?

We’re all counting. We weren’t raised with participation trophies — and we didn’t get creativity credit for making up words like “ajou.”

CAPTAIN JOEL’S FISHING HOLES

Yellow jacks: good fightin’, good eatin’

Arguably one of the most underrated fish in the Keys, yellow jack have no closed season, no size limit, and taste fantastic in a variety of preparations.

CONTRIBUTED

…is a fifth-generation Floridian and second-generation fishing captain who owns and operates Ana Banana Fishing Company in Marathon. His passions include fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.

If you're looking for a big fight and a great meal, target yellow jacks. They fight like jack crevalle, which pound for pound is the hardest fighting fish in the ocean. They taste like a permit or an African pompano – sweet white meat. They are good fried, grilled, blackened or baked.

Some marine biologists claim that yellow jacks aren’t indigenous to the Florida Keys and showed up here about 20 years ago from Central America. We are just figuring out their spawning habits and habitats, but FWC and Florida's marine biologists know two things about yellow jacks for sure: They fight like a gamefish and taste like a delicacy. Because of this, FWC had to put a limit on them. Presently there's no size limit and no closed season, but there is a bag limit, which equates to 100 pounds per person per day. The fish average about five pounds each, and it's not rare to limit out with 20 per person. The biggest one ever caught on my boat was about 15 pounds, and the biggest one I've ever seen caught was about 20 pounds. Twenty pounds is rumored to be a world record yellow jack.

I like to catch them around the Seven Mile Bridge and on shallow wrecks. My favorite bait is a yellow jig head tipped with a large live shrimp, but I have caught them on almost every type of live baitfish. They typically don't eat dead bait and they are very leery of wire leader and braided line. Only use a light mono fluorocarbon leader to target them.

TOURNAMENT ALERT!

The upcoming Battle of the Bubbas wahoo and kingfish tournament will benefit Warriors on the Water. Due to the alarming veteran suicide rate, Warriors on the Water’s goal is to prevent or reduce this tragedy by providing those who have served with fishing charters and outdoor events. Vets have a chance to spend time on the water with others from all branches of the military to share stories and build camaraderie. Those suffering from depression, anxiety and/ or PSD can relax and reflect in the great outdoors. It's a very worthy cause. Captains will choose two days to fish from Feb. 3-5, with a captains’ meeting on Feb. 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. The entry fee is $695 per boat, and top teams will be awarded more than $20,000 in cash and other prizes. Find more information and register by scanning the attached QR code. Good luck, and hope to see you all there.

BASILICA SCHOOL CONTINUES WITH SUCCESSFUL SPORTS SEASONS

PRINCIPAL/COACH ROBERT WRIGHT FILLS US IN

The Basilica School of St. Mary Star of the Sea girls’ volleyball program has swept all of its competition in the Florida Keys for the last two years, going undefeated last year 14-0 and 28-0 in sets.

The girls’ basketball team went 11-0 last year. The boys’ team is sitting at 7-0 for the season and has defeated all competing schools in the Keys.

“We thought this was going to be a rebuilding year. We had managed our expectations from the beginning, but as we teach them in all things, never settle for mediocrity. You give it 110% whatever may come,” principal Robert Wright said. “We’ve had seasons and

players with more talent on average, but this team has made school history and they did so by proving yet again that basketball is a team sport. It has to be played, and won, as a team.

“What we may lack in some aspects of the game we have made up for in others. The development of virtue can make a player perform better. A player with a calm head gets less rattled, has better court vision and doesn’t try forcing a play that isn’t there.

“A number of our players begin practice by spending 10 minutes in the chapel. They do this voluntarily. No one ever told them to go there, but this has been a tradition for two years. I don’t think that means God is on our side, but I do think it demonstrates a level of discipline and commitment that any coach would want from a player.”

RAIN BANKS

“Rain is the type of player who makes those around her look good. I rely on her for a lot and she shoulders the responsibility without complaint. Rain does not make excuses; she makes plays, often doing so under double and even triple-team pressure.”

— Marathon coach Tracy McDonald

Junior, Marathon Soccer

Marathon’s Rain Banks has been a staple for the Lady Fins since her first appearance on the varsity roster in the 6th grade. A five-year letterwoman, the junior is in her second year serving as team captain, leading the offense from her role as midfielder. Banks is first for the Fins in scoring this season with 17 goals and 7 assists, 4 of which were against Cushman School on Jan. 11. BOYS/GIRLS BASKETBALL MARATHON KEY WEST JANUARY

Girls basketball action is heating up in the Keys with just two weeks until postseason action begins. Two Monroe County teams faced one another on Jan. 10 when Key West earned its first win of the season against Coral Shores. The Lady Conchs beat the ’Canes 38-24 before losing to Mater Lakes on Jan. 14.

The Lady Fins added two wins and a loss to their record last week with a 55-20 defeat over Florida Christian on Jan. 10. Abriana Marshall had the game high total of 13 points, inching closer to 200 on the season, and Aniyla Hawkins scored 10. Marathon lost to Horeb on the 12th, then turned their week back in the right direction with a 50-44 win over St. Brendan on Jan. 13.

Girls district playoffs begin on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Marathon and Coral Shores will battle within the 3A District 16 bracket while Key West will face 4A teams for a chance to move on to the state series.

Boys basketball saw some in-county play last week, too. Coral Shores beat Key West in Conch territory on Jan. 10, winning on the road 53-35. Isaac Holmes scored 18 points with 7 rebounds and 2 steals, and Matt St. Aubin scored 15 with 13 rebounds. Eddy Espinosa went two for three from the three-point line, scoring 13 in the process and adding 4 rebounds and 4 steals.

Head coach Jarrod Mandozzi was pleased with the in-county win. “There’s definitely no better place to win than there in all of my experience,” he said. “The crowd is so into it, crazy things are always happening in games there with calls. … It’s just an amazing rivalry.”

The winning didn’t stop there for the ’Canes. On Jan. 12, they took down Palmer Trinity to seal a four-game winning streak. Holmes dropped 27 points, going 9 for 14 shooting with 13 rebounds and 2 steals as well. St. Aubin scored 10 points and 10 rebounds and Allen Perez was good for 14 while going 4 for 5 from the three-point line.

Mandozzi’s team looks to be coming together well right in time for districts. Though they have some things to work on, he praised their overall performance, saying, “I’m extremely pleased with the way we’re closing games out. We’ve really been taking it to teams in the second half of games, but I’d like to see us start better.”

Conch sophomore Kameron Roberts led the drive for Key West, scoring 16 points and grabbing 5 rebounds against the ’Canes. Key West played Hialeah Educational Academy on Jan. 13. Roberts had the team high again with 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Watson Chery pulled down 10 rebounds in the

loss. The next day, they played Barbara Goleman High School, beating the Gators 92-79. Eric Moore had a huge night for the Conchs, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. James Osborne scored 21 points and Roberts added 15 in the win.

Marathon’s boys enjoyed a resounding win against Redland Christian on Jan. 10. In the 61-12 victory, senior Oscar Garcia led the scoring with a career-high 17 points. Xavier Grant added 10 points, two rebounds and three steals. The lopsided win allowed coach Kevin Freeman to play his entire bench, all of whom took advantage of the play time and scored.

Two nights later, they beat Horeb Christian 50-37 for the second time this season. Marathon was without freshman Daeshawn Holmes, who is recovering from a concussion.

“Our two seniors, (Oscar) Garcia and Fisher Coleman-Sayer really stepped up and played an all-around good game,” said Freeman. “Our defense really stepped up in the fourth quarter and limited Horeb to only 3 points.”

Coleman-Sayer had 16 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks against Horeb, and Garcia had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. The Fins went on to defeat Colonial Christian on Jan. 13, 61-27, for a three-game win streak.

Coach Freeman told the Weekly that the home stretch looks promising for the Fins. “We are playing a little better than we did before the Christmas break,” he said. “Players are settling into their roles and we are just trying to get better every day.”

Postseason play for boys basketball begins Feb. 7.

STEVEN QUARTLY MAKES IMPRESSION AT KEY WEST GALLERY

ARTIST OFFERS LIVE PAINTING DEMONSTRATIONS JAN. 19-23

Prominent modern impressionist artist Steven Quartly will paint in person at Key West Gallery from Thursday, Jan. 19 through Monday, Jan. 23.

Quartly began oil painting at age 13, demonstrating a love for life, nature, color and form.

He was raised on the northern California coast, surrounded by stunning scenery and an inspiring city, where he studied oil painting under a mentor painter. He studied French and early American Impressionists for 10 years, which would launch his passion for painting the world he sees.

Today, Quartly’s work is known for the light that is created. His technique is intriguing and energetic. His design in composition and color is meaningful and skilled. Using loose and whimsical brush strokes and pallet knife work he brings passion and emotion to each new painting.

“In creating art I hope to inspire, and through this process, gain an understanding of this world and my purpose here,” the artist said.

Quartly will be in Key West for an exhibition of his latest original paintings and limited editions. All artwork on display is available for acquisition. Commission paintings are available upon artist approval.

WEATHER IDEAL FOR CELEBRATION

Last weekend was too chilly and breezy for boat trips, poolside drinks and beach days. But the weather turned out to be perfect for the 17th annual Key West Seafood Festival, a celebration of our local saltwater bounty presented by the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association.

Bayview Park was packed for both days of the festival, as dogs, kids, seafood lovers and shoppers perused the offerings.

Proceeds raised at the festival help the local industry’s scholarship program for children of commercial fishermen and women.

LOCAL FLAG FOOTBALL FOUNDER HELPS 70 AFGHAN WOMEN GET ASYLUM

The International Women’s Flag Football Association unforgettably fulfilled its mission of women’s empowerment and equality last year, when its Key West founder, Diane Beruldsen, helped 70 Afghan women gain political asylum and escape Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

Beruldsen had previously traveled to several different countries teaching women the game of flag football, coaching their first practices, then training local coaches and spreading a message of female strength and equality.

But her coaching travels in 2018 made history and saved lives.

It was then that Beruldsen traveled to Jaipur, India to teach a group of Indian women flag football. A handful of Afghan women who were living in Kabul, Afghanistan were able to obtain visas and meet Beruldsen in Jaipur, India. They had never seen, held or thrown an American football, but were enthusiastic learners.

“At that time, in 2018, U.S. troops occupied Afghanistan. The American government used sport programs to empower the Afghan women to counter their culture, its forced submissiveness of females and the dominance of men and the Taliban,” Beruldsen said in a recollection of what became a 15-month mission.

“Teaching the Afghan women flag football meant much more. The IWFFA uses flag football to develop leaders and empower females. This situation was the essence of our organization. A lot of planning, money and hard work would go into this effort,” she said, adding that fundraisers provided money to buy equipment that the Afghan women would bring back to their country.

Using Hindi translators for the Indian players and Persian translators for the Afghan women, Beruldsen taught fundamentals, finesse and strategy.

More importantly, friendships became connections that would cross oceans and continents.

While in India, Beruldsen heard what life was like for women in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime.

“It was so difficult to understand why men would suppress women to such extremes. Women were not allowed to watch TV, use the internet, attend school or play sports. They couldn’t leave the house without a man’s permission. Not just husbands, but brothers and other male relatives had the right to control them. This was the life for women outside Kabul. These Afghan women who came to India were lucky to be living in Kabul, which was occupied by U.S. troops. The rest of Afghanistan was still run by other militias and the Taliban.”

Upon returning home from India, the Afghan women created the Afghanistan Women Flag Football Federation. They coached, officiated and

played flag football — until August 2021, when U.S. troops withdrew from Afghanistan.

The Taliban retook control of the country and subjected women to brutal restrictions. Women who participated in sports had broken the Taliban law and faced harsh punishments, Beruldsen said.

Then she received a text message from Afghanistan: “Madame, can you help us?”

Beruldsen didn’t hesitate to do anything in her power: writing letters to congressmen, seeking out the few American soldiers still in Afghanistan and finally, receiving a fateful email from a former IWFFA flag football player.

Bridget Cambria was more than a sympathetic former player. She was an immigration attorney who co-founded a nonprofit called ALDEA - The People’s Justice Center, which had already helped several Afghans gain asylum.

A flood of Zoom calls, paperwork, passport applications, fees and visas followed. Beruldsen lined up jobs for the women in Key West and Provincetown, Massachusetts hotels.

But delays ensued, deadlines passed and hope decayed, just as the IWFFA was ramping up for its Mexican Flag Football Tournament in May 2022. That’s when ALDEA’s lawyers suggested the Afghan women apply for asylum in Mexico instead of the U.S.

The Mexican government agreed and on Nov. 16, 2022, the first group of 37 Afghans landed in Mexico City on a flight from Istanbul, Turkey. Beruldsen was there to welcome them, having slept in the airport after arriving late the night before.

“In our first group of 37 Afghans, 22 were women, 18 were flag football players and all ofthe Afghans — women, girls, men and boys — were members of the IWFFA.”

A second group of 33 Afghans is now awaiting their escape on a similar flight.

The IWFFA is continuing to raise money for the second group’s plane tickets and other assistance. A Go Fund Me account has been established under the title “Help resettle Afghan women’s flag football team.”

Meet local artist Sebastian Wolf who recently was hanging at the Kava Culture Bar on Fleming Street, where some of his metal and stone wearable — and collectible — art was on display. The quirky artist and his wife Magesty’s two constant companions are their unusual cats: the striking blue-eyed sphynxes Galaxy and Anura. The felines’ mode of travel these days is a stroller that was parked at Kava the day we sat down to talk about Wolf’s intricate and metaphysical pieces as revealed in jewelry and sculpture.

The blue-tressed creator works mainly with woven wire, often studded with crystals and semi-precious stones. Recycled materials sourced from discarded silver wire and other metals add to the art’s mystique.

“Every piece has a story, a history to it,” the 42 year-old Wolf said. “I play and listen to music while I’m creating these beautiful creations.”

Galaxy, he said, will “climb into what’s called a hang drum; he’s entranced by the sound.”

This week, Wolf completed a project that’s now for sale, a graceful flamingo embedded with colorful, uncut sustainably-sourced gems.

The cat-and-human family are recent arrivals to Key West by way of Arizona, where Sebastian and Magesty acquired many of their crystals and other stones. In fact, that’s how the pair met.

“I went out to collect amethysts in the desert and there she was,” Wolf said. “It was fate or energy or providence, I don’t really know. We’ve been together over nine years now.”

Magesty (yes, the name is spelled with a G) has her own passion as a raw vegan enthusiast and cook. “I make vegan desserts and teach people how to use raw food.”

Speaking of raw-based diets, Galaxy and Anura follow the same rule in the household: their sole food intake is uncooked rabbit for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In fact, on a recent visit to Kava Bar, where Sebastian was displaying some of his jewelry, the two cats were screeching through the screen on the stroller. “They’re really hungry right now,” Magesty laughed.

But don’t worry, the Wolfs aren’t chasing down rabbits in the street to feed their felines.

“We order frozen rabbit meat online. They won’t eat anything else!”

The unconventional artist and his wife, although new to the island, appear to blend in seamlessly with the eclectic diversity of the art scene in Key West. A few times a week, Wolf joins other purveyors who offer some of their work in the outdoor Duval Street marketplace.

Coming down to the island at first took some convincing from friends and family. “When we were in Arizona, everyone was telling me, ‘You have to go to Key West.’ At first I was skeptical about moving to Florida. Now I see what they were talking about.”

Wolf’s attitude about life fits in perfectly with his art.

“Trust your intuition,” he winked.

LOCAL BREADFRUIT FROM GRIMAL GROVE FINDS MARKET PLACE

SPIRITED HOMAGE: MUTINY ISLAND VODKA

What do you get from a breadfruit once it’s been peeled, sliced, chopped and frozen?

Just ask Patrick Garvey, the head of Grimal Grove Reserve in Big Pine Key. He’ll probably answer with “Why not vodka?” The eco-agriculturist has spent years trying to put together a way to turn his plentiful breadfruit groves into a product that can be consumed and win greater recognition among the public about the sustainability and viability of the local crop.

Garvey and his team have succeeded in their efforts so far: the Mutiny Island Reserve Vodka brand, currently produced at Chesapeake Bay Distillery in Virginia, is the only spirit made solely from Florida Keys agriculture in partnership with the St. Croix-based liquor company.

“I had been attempting to make a connection with the owner of Mutiny for a while and then, during a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands several years ago, we struck a deal,” Garvey said.

So, what exactly is a breadfruit? It’s the edible product encased by a curious-looking dimpled green shell that rises from a cousin of the mulberry tree. Breadfruit also contains a considerable amount of starch. Garvey likened the fruit’s composition to that of a potato — where the perfect backbone of the specialty vodka begins.

“It spoils quickly and rots so you have to use it after it ripens or it’s done.” The tree, he added, produces 1,000 pounds of breadfruit a year, making it a sustainable and renewable food source. Grimal Grove’s mission began in 2011, when Garvey acquired the land parcel while promoting micro-agriculture in the Keys. “We’re always looking for ways to shore up food security here for local families and find ways to reduce our delicate ecosystem’s carbon footprint,” he noted last week.

After Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 decimated much of the trees on the Big Pine Key property and some in the Virgin Islands, wiping them clean of viable crops, the idea of planting breadfruit trees began to germinate.

“We discovered that the breadfruit tree is one of the most resilient trees that can consistently withstand hurricane forces,” Garvey said.

Even better, the fruit is reportedly a superfood. It can be made into gluten-free flour, chips and pretty much anything.

So, enter super-premium vodka. The cocktail is super-smooth with 100% neutral spirits. “And it meets our goal of sustainability and the reduction of food waste.”

After all, Garvey joked, “Vodka doesn’t spoil.”

While producing the alcohol product from the Grimal Grove breadfruit crop has proven successful so far, Garvey’s main focus is to increase America’s awareness of this humble fruit. “One breadfruit tree can feed a family of four for a lifetime.” The grove’s goal is to completely transition the distillery operations to the Keys by 2024.

Mutiny Bay Vodka is available in select bars, restaurants and liquor stores around Key West.

The Keys Weekly family loves animals as much as our friends at the Florida Keys SPCA do, and we’re honored each week to showcase some “furever” friends that are ready, waiting and available for adoption at the organization’s Key West campus.

From cats and dogs to Guinea

pigs, hamsters, rabbits, reptiles and birds, the perfect addition to your family is waiting for you. The SPCA’s knowledgeable staff will help with advice and care tips while working to ensure a good fit between each pet and its people.

The SPCA’s Golden Paw program also provides special assistance with vet bills and medications for special-needs and older animals that require a little extra TLC.

The cooler temperatures brought out 37 volunteers two weeks in a row for the Friday morning cleanups. In one hour on Jan. 13, the Ploggers gathered 238 pounds of trash, 8 pounds of recycling and 2 gallons of cigarette butts. Special thank you to Alton Weekley of Fausto’s Food palace on White Street for providing the volunteers with coffee, water and danishes after their hard work. CONTRIBUTED

One hour a week makes a huge difference, and volunteers are welcome every Friday and some Saturday mornings, from 8 to 9 a.m., when the Key West Ploggers clean up a designated area of the island.

Gloves, pickers, buckets, vests, hand sanitizer and a parking pass are provided to all volunteers.

A troubling number of cigarette butts and plastic bags have been included in recent hauls. Please remember your reusable bags when shopping so we can keep the plastic off the streets, parking lots and, most importantly, out of the water. And dispose of cigarette butts in any receptacle rather than the street or sidewalk, as from there, they easily end up in the ocean.

The city of Key West and its residents ask everyone to do their part to help keep Key West beautiful. With simple steps like making sure you bag your trash before putting it in your Waste Management trash cans or Dumpsters, and making sure the lids on Dumpsters are closed, will keep a lot of trash from blowing into the streets. Call Waste Management at 305-296-8297 for any

furniture items left on the city right of way.

Please pick up around your home or apartment complex. Every piece of trash picked up is one less that may end up in the ocean that surrounds and sustains our island community. It is not just the large items you can see easily when you are walking, but the smaller items such as bottle caps and cigarette butts that are collected by the volunteers that make the biggest difference.

It takes committed community involvement to Keep Key West Beautiful and we are making progress with every cleanup event and every spot that’s adopted.

Please call Dorian at the city of Key West at 305-8093782 to know more about how your business, nonprofit or club can help.

PREPARING FOR A PIRATE BATTLE

Captured Ann Maria captain courts help from Alligator schooner

Pirate attacks on American ships sailing in foreign waters were nothing unusual in 1822. The Ann Maria, from New York, was victimized by pirates operating in Cuban waters twice, by the same pirates, between September and November. The Ann Maria was rescued the second time by the U.S. schooner Alligator, one of the ships assigned to the famed anti-piracy West Indies Squadron.

The Ann Maria was not the only American ship liberated that day. Among others being held was the schooner Iris and it was the desperation of the master of the Iris, Freeman Mayo, that brought the Alligator to the pirate cove on Nov. 9.

On Nov. 4, 1822, the Iris sailed about 40 miles off the port city of Matanzas, Cuba. At about 8 a.m., Mayo observed two schooners sailing out from the coast. As they approached, one of the schooners fired its 18-pounder twice, sending cannonballs over the deck of the Iris as a request for her to lower her sails and await company. When Mayo complied, a crew of six men boarded. They were armed with pistols, cutlasses and long knives and announced themselves as pirates. To impress the point, when they boarded, the pirate captain fired his pistol over the head of Mayo.

The pirates held Mayo and his crew hostage while they searched the ship for potential booty. However, when the pirates attempted to crew the ship and sail away with their prize, they could not perform the task. To help the pirates, they brought half the hostages back on deck to man the lines and sails. Once they did, the pirate captain sailed the Iris closer to the Cuban coast and dropped the anchor about a quarter-mile off the beach. When the sails were dropped and secured, and the anchor was resting on the bottom, the pirates forced the master and crew into the forecastle’s confines (the upper deck’s forward part).

According to an account delivered by Mayo, they were crammed inside the forecastle without food, water or “barely enough air for them all to breathe.” They also, apparently, found Mayo’s clothes when they raided his quarters, and when they did, they played dressup. At midnight, Mayo was separated from his crew and brought to one of the ship’s cabins. The pirates beat him with their pistols, choked him, and threatened to end his life. Though they returned Mayo to the forecastle, they were not done and only exchanged him for the cook and cabin boy, whom they beat and terrorized, too.

When the sun rose on Nov. 5, the Iris sailed about five miles away from Point Yeacoa, and that night, the pirates robbed the master and crew of all their clothing, money and watches. The next day, they sailed five miles into a bay and anchored near another schooner captured by the pirates the same day as the Iris. There, the pirates began to offload the ship’s cargo, including 100 boxes of

axes, about 40 casks of nails, anchors, rigging, two compasses and about 300 pounds of bread and other food staples. Next, the pirate captain ordered his crew to search the schooner for one more hour in case they missed anything of value and, after that, to kill the ship’s master and crew and burn the ship.

Mayo pleaded with the captain to let his men live, give them a long boat, some bread and water and allow them to make their way to the Florida coast. The captain refused, telling Mayo that he would spare none of them. Fortunately for Mayo, one of the other pirates tried to talk the captain out of his decision. That pirate was told to do his duty, or he would be killed, too. Mayo then proposed going to Matanzas to raise money to ransom their lives and ship. After a brief hesitation, the captain agreed to give him three days to come back with $6,000 ($7,000 in some accounts), or he would continue with his plan.

The captain brought Mayo seven miles offshore of Matanzas and set him off in a long boat. Mayo arrived at the port at 1 p.m. and called on the governor to help, but he refused. Also, American merchants at the port refused to help, telling Mayo that negotiating with the pirates would set a bad precedent. At the dock, a group of American shipmasters agreed to help by assembling a force of their crews to fight the pirates. Captain Wilkins of the pilot boat schooner Ploughboy from Philadelphia offered his ship and services. A canon, an 18-pounder, was loaded onto the ship, as were 50 muskets, pistols and cutlasses.

About 50 men had gathered near the Ploughboy, but as it became closer to the time to embark on their mission, some of the men began to get cold feet, back out and discourage others from the operation. Unsure of how to proceed, Mayo saw potential help arrive when the U.S. schooner Alligator sailed into port on Nov. 8. After the ship arrived, Mayo boarded and pleaded his case to Lt. William Allen. Shortly after that, the Alligator, followed by the Ploughboy, sailed away from Matanzas and into a pirate fight.

Avast ye! In next week’s edition of Florida Keys History with Brad Bertelli, the story of the pirate fight and the fate of Lt. Allen will be explored. Until then hearties, yo ho ho!

THE SONG OF THE SIDEMAN

From the studio engineer who smiles as he applies auto-tune to a struggling artist’s soprano vocals, to the tech who switches the guitarist’s foot pedals from behind the curtain as the sound magically goes from ethereal delays to overdriven mayhem, the music industry is full of unsung heroes. None of these stands closer to rock-n-roll glory than the sideman.

When searching for a good example of a sideman one person instantly comes to mind. When we think of Tom Petty, we recognize his ability to write a hit song. Most of these songs have an iconic riff that instantly identifies them. Those riffs were almost exclusively written by Mike Campbell. When you are a player whose creativity and performance become as integral a part of the sound as the lead singer/songwriter, you have graduated from rhythm section to sideman.

Another form of the sideman is the hired gun. The list of hired guns who have gone on to legendary status is endless. Names like Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Don Henley, Luther Vandross and countless others. Many bands hire players in the studio to play perfect versions of songs the original writers struggle to perform to studio quality. (This happens more often than one might think.)

Bands like Steely Dan have been known to have several of the best players come into the studio until they find the track and player they like for a particular song.

Sometimes side men consist of entire bands. The Eagles, for instance, had a gig as backup band for Linda Ronstadt. The Hawks band would rename itself The Band after

RAY WEST

a tour with Bob Dylan. The E Street Band was inducted into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame for its work separate from Bruce Springsteen.

... a professional musician, singer, actor and executive director of the Key West Music Awards, is known to sacrifice his comfort for that of his cat.

Yet another type of sideman is the specialty player. There are instances in popular music when a riff, from an instrument other than a guitar, becomes iconic. The violin player from Kansas would fall into this category, as well as the flute player from Men at Work, and playing “Money” by Pink Floyd without that sax solo is, well, cake without icing. Still good, but, man …

In some instances, the keyboardist is considered the sideman. There are legendary keyboardists like Reese Wynans, well known for his work with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble; he has also worked with Buddy Guy, John Mayall, Los Lonely Boys, Martina McBride and most recently Joe Bonamassa. There are many like Brett Tuggle, longtime keyboardist for Fleetwood Mac, whose name is rarely mentioned by the tens of millions who have heard his work.

The career of the sideman could be compared to that of a cowboy. You come onto the ranch, work hard, do a job you’re good at, and make yourself indispensable, for a season. Sometimes you stay, creating something you call your own. More often than not, it’s on to the next ranch, the next bunkhouse. Riding into the sunset with the new group of wranglers — with a kickass theme song.

SHELF HELP

Staff from your Monroe County Public Library recommend some of their favorites from the collection.

What: “A Deadly Education” by Naomi Novik

Why: The concept of this book is wild! A school is created to protect magical students but in reality it sees many of them killed. And the name of the game is survival. Gal as a character is a bit of a conundrum. She is constantly angry, but her loneliness is of her own doing, though some of the gruff exterior melts away a little bit as she gains proper friends. I really enjoyed this book being in first person as it allowed for witty commentary and gave the reader a really nice look into who Gal was as a character. The ending was explosive and I cannot wait to read the second book. This book could be a little violent, but that is dark academia for you.

Where: This is available as in print, ebook and e-audiobook from the Monroe County Library system.

How: You can request books online by logging in to www. keyslibraries.org and get ebooks and e-audiobooks 24/7 at www. estuff.keyslibraries.org. If you don’t have a card, you can visit your local branch or register online to get one. Questions? info@ keyslibraries.org
