Voters decide largest council election
ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com
If anyone says they knew exactly how the Nov. 8 Marathon City Coun cil election would end, be skeptical.
The largest city election since Marathon’s incorporation in 1999 did not disappoint, as the hotly-contested field of nine candidates was whittled to four barely an hour after polls closed on Tuesday night.
Topping the field with 1,671 votes was current planning commission chair Lynn Landry, followed closely by cur rent councilwoman Robyn Still at 1,602 and Jeff Smith at 1,500. A tight battle for the fourth open seat saw Kenny Matlock (1,246 votes) emerge victori ous over runners-up Mike Leonard and Kevin Macaulay. A total of 138 votes separated fourth through sixth place.
The result comes at the conclusion of an extended issue-focused cam paign by the large field of candidates as Marathon continues to navigate critical lawsuits surrounding building permits and affordable housing allocations.
“I’m so looking forward to working with the new council,” said Still at a joint victory celebration with Landry at the Marathon Elks Lodge, where the two were soon joined by Smith and Matlock. “We have great things that we need to do. … Just remember: I’m approachable. Come to me if you have questions or comments; I need to hear that. If we don’t hear from you, we can’t work with you. Let’s have a great upcoming year.”
“It’s a very humbling experience to have such support in this community,” said Landry. “I’m looking forward to doing the work now. Campaigning was interesting for me, and now I’m ready to serve this community.”
Per the referendum passed in August’s primary election to avoid ex cessive single-election turnover on the city council, Landry, Still and Smith will serve three-year terms on the council, while Matlock will serve for two years to line up with the expiration of current councilman Luis Gonzalez’s term.
With 34,095 ballots cast out of 55,183 registered voters, Monroe County as a whole welcomed a rela tively strong voter turnout for a nonpresidential election at 61.79%.

GOLDEN YEARS
Drew Grossman, CEO of Fishermen’s and Mariners hospitals, agreed that Hershoff is a people person.
JAY
HERSHOFF APPOINTED
CHAIR OF BAPTIST HEALTH SOUTH FLORIDA BOARD
“He realizes that it takes all kinds of differ ent talent to get the job done every day,” said Grossman. “He has a good way of interacting. He’s the first one to say he needs to learn more.”
Hershoff is indeed humble about how he got his start in working with Keys hospitals in 1993, when a colleague suggested he fill a va cancy on the Mariners Hospital board.
“Before that, I had never been involved with a hospital, other than being a patient,” he said.
In the mid-1990s, using negotiating skills developed over years of working as an attor ney in crime, personal injury and family law, Hershoff hammered out a deal for Mariners Hospital to become a part of the Baptist Health South Florida system and get a new facility as a result. Prior to that, Mariners had been housed in an old building with additions that had been slapped on over the years.
Eventually, he moved on to the Fishermen’s board, then finally joined the Baptist Health South Florida board in 2002.
JayHershoff is 79 years old. And he’s “retired.” Or, at least, as retired as you can be when you’re the chairman of the board of trustees for Baptist Health South Florida, an organization that stretches from Marathon to Boynton Beach and has 12 hospitals, 26,000 employees, 20 urgent care sites, 19 diagnostic centers and much more.
Many of us in the Keys may envision our golden years as a simple life where the most pressing decision of the day is: Should we eat at Ziggie’s or Lazy Days tonight? But since officially becoming chairman on Oct. 1, Hershoff has a say in how to spend $5 billion a year in annual revenue, on everything from a new physician and new services to a new building.
When Keys Weekly spoke to him on a phone call that was scheduled a few days ahead of time, he was frequently interrupted by calls and texts regarding Baptist Health South Florida matters.
“There goes another one,” he said, as his line clicked. “That’s a fellow board member. Since I started as chairman 31 days ago, I would say 25 of those days were spent on the hospital.”
In addition to juggling board chairman activities, Hershoff heads into his law firm, Hershoff, Lupino and Yagel, to work a few hours a week — even though he officially retired on Dec. 31, 2019.
“I should get a phone call from the ‘Not Retirement Society,’” he said, chuckling. “I have a hard time saying ‘no.’”
Jokes aside, Hershoff’s friends and colleagues are quick to point out his ac complishments. Marathon residents (and husband-and-wife team) Jim Rifkin and Jane Packard spearheaded efforts to raise $15
million from the community toward replac ing the old Fishermen’s Community Hospital building that was destroyed during Hur ricane Irma. As part of a deal that Hershoff brokered, Baptist Health agreed to pay for the facility as long as locals contributed at least $15 million.
“He’s an amazing person,” said Rifkin. “He’s the first person from the Keys to achieve the position of chairman at Baptist Health South Florida. And without Jay, there would be no hospital here (in Marathon). Jay went to the hallowed halls of Baptist Health and convinced them to get on board. In the last 20 years, only one rural hospital was built in the country — and I’m looking out the window right at it.”
“Jay eats, breathes and sleeps Baptist Health. That’s his passion,” said Packard. “Fishermen’s and Mariners would never have happened without him. To me, to know Jay is to love Jay. ”
“I have no hobbies any more,” he said, explaining that he physically can no longer handle the water activities he used to adore. “I’m passionate about health care and helping communities. I’m very proud of what we’ve done to get the new hospital and board approval for the medical arts building on the old library site in Marathon. My perfect day is getting things approved at Baptist Health, when the sun shines by the pool — and anything with my wife, Nancy.”
The Islamorada resident wears his power lightly — in that Florida Keys way.
On Oct. 28, he went to the Hilton in Miami to speak to an audience of 125 Baptist Health board members. When he went to unpack his suitcase in his hotel room, he realized that he had not packed any long pants to wear.
“I got up to make the speech, and I was wearing Columbia cargo shorts,” he said, laugh ing. “Everyone else was in long pants. I said, ‘The invitation said business casual, but I’m in Keys formal.’”
Needless to say, he brought down the house.

THE BUZZ ABOUT 79TH STREET
MEGHAN RICHARDSON www.keysweekly.com
Thanks to our keenly observant locals, new construction creates quite the buzz around town. An often-uttered question is, “Is it housing?” This is followed with, “Will it be affordable?”
To answer these questions at the corner of 79th Street and Overseas Highway in Marathon, Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys (HFHMK) has great news. The Anchor Inn, which stood sentinel for 64 years on that corner, graciously gave up its post to make way for HFHMK’s largest build to date: eight affordable homes plus a combination affiliate office and Habitat ReStore. This build, named Bell Haven in honor of the late Jill Bell, is slated to be complete by late 2023.
“This project has been a crazy dream since 2018 when we asked ourselves, as an affiliate, what could we do if we ever got ownership of a large parcel of land?” said Chris Todd Young, HFHMK executive director. “The discussion quickly took shape that beyond the ever-present need for affordable homes, our community desperately needed a ReStore. We get calls daily from people wanting to donate or are in search of items. People constantly stop in our office asking if we are a ReStore.”
Fast forward four years and that “crazy dream” is transforming into concrete foundations, columns, stairs and floors. Thanks to cooperation among IMBY LLC (then-owner of the Anchor Inn property), Monroe County, the City of Marathon, and HFHMK, the land was acquired, designs were created, and permits were pulled. Keys Contracting Services is heading up the build of eight side-by side duplexes, with six three-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom units and two two-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom units.
“It’s so exciting and also scary,” said Young. “Exciting because we are answering not one but two needs for our community. Scary because of the price tag. Back in 2015, we could get a modular for around $175,000. These homes are costing nearly $400,000 each. That’s a lot of fundraising, and no, we haven’t raised enough yet to reach the finish line. So yeah, it’s scary, but our community needs this.”
The project’s estimated cost is just shy of $5 million, of which HFHMK has raised nearly $3 million so far. Instrumental in Habitat’s efforts are the State of Florida, Department of Economic Opportunity, Baptist Health South Florida, the Homeownership for All license plate grant, Publix Super Markets Charities, the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Truist Foundation. Additionally, donations have been made in honor of the late Jill Bell, Joseph Rabito, Robert Guerin and Nancy Coletti. Beyond donations and grants, HFHMK applies the mortgage principal payments made by current Habitat homeowners toward new build costs.
“If all of our locals donated just $25, it will bring us over $200,000 closer,” said Young. “I think people worry if they can’t give much, but small donations add up.” To donate right now and be a part of the Bell Haven $25 Donation Drive, scan the attached QR code.
Donations can also be made at www.habitatmiddlekeys.org, or at the office at 8055 Overseas Hwy. in Marathon. For business donations, please ask about the benefits of joining the Mangrove Club. All donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.
Applications for the homes will be available in January. The organization expects a highly competitive selection process with more than 100 applicants. Information about the
application process will be posted on HFHMK’s website toward the end of this year, and specific questions may be directed to Meghan Richardson, the organization’s homeowner services manager.
Despite their high cost, the builds are made affordable for homeowners with Habitat’s 0% interest 30-year mortgage with a down payment of only $1,000 due at closing. Monthly payments include principal, taxes and insurance. In exchange for the low down payment, selected homeowners must complete 350 hours of “sweat equity” prior to closing. Examples of sweat equity hours include assisting in the home’s completion, volunteering with Habitat and other non-profits, and helping at community events.
“This is true homeownership. While the homes will always be deeded affordable and thus never see the dramatic increases in value that market rate homes do, Habitat homeowners build equity over time while also enjoying the security of a permanent place to live,” said Young. “Affordable homeownership means less employee turnover due to lack of affordable rentals. It opens up a rental elsewhere and can mean an increase in pet adoptions, better school participation by both parents and children, attention to preventative health care, and the ability to plan for the future. Habitat is the mangrove forest of the community by providing stability for every other aspect to thrive.”

Iwonder
what Don Larsen would have thought about the World Series game on Nov. 2. It was the fourth game of this year’s Series, won by the Houston Astros in six games.
It’s the game that will go down as a no-hitter, albeit one in which Houston’s Cristian Javier pitched six innings, followed by three other pitchers. Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly each hurled one inning without allowing a hit.
As Javier, 25, went inning to inning, allowing no hits, I rooted for him, that he would pitch nine innings. He did not, of course.
He issued just two walks while striking out nine before he exited to a big hug from Astros manager Dusty Baker after 97 pitches.
Relievers Abreu (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks), Montero (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K) and Pressly (1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K) followed with no-hit innings of their own to complete just the second no-hitter in World Series history.
Do you remember the first? I do, of course. It was Don Larsen’s perfect game. Larsen was pitching for the New York Yankees. He pitched it in game five of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.
I probably remember it most because my favorite player, Dale Mitchell, made the 27th out of Larsen’s perfect game. Mitchell played most of his career with the Cleveland Indians and was traded to the Dodgers late in the 1956 season. He rarely struck out, but did so with a called strike three to complete Larsen’s perfect game.
Larsen pitched for seven teams. His win-loss record was 81-91. Larsen was 90 when he died on Jan. 2, 2020. Larsen and Mark Shaw wrote a book with a forward by Yogi Berra, who was Larsen’s catcher, titled, “The Perfect Yankee: The Incredible Story of the Greatest Miracle in Baseball History.” I have not read it, so I cannot give it a plus or minus.
The Houston Astros won the 2022 World Series trophy. CONTRIBUTED
The third no-hitter thrown in post-season would be Roy Halladay’s of Oct. 6, 2010. He pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies against the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the National League Division Series. Philadelphia won 4-0.
There have been 314 no-hitters in Major League history, including 23 perfect games starting in 1880. Five no-hitters were recorded in 2022.
One of the most famous without being a complete perfect game was pitched by Harvey Haddix on May 26, 1959. Haddix pitched 12 perfect innings for Pittsburgh against the Milwaukee Braves. In the 13th inning, third baseman Don Hoak made an error on a grounder by Felix Mantilla, according to Wikipedia. Eddie Matthews sacrificed Mantilla to second and Hank Aaron was intentionally walked.
Joe Adcock then apparently homered, so not only did Haddix lose his perfect game and no-hitter, but the victory as well. However, Aaron left the basepath and was passed by Adcock for the second out. Supposedly the Braves won, 2-0. The National League president eventually ruled that Adcock’s homer was a double and only Mantilla’s run counted, resulting in a final score of 1-0.
But the Pirates and Haddix still lost.

COLLEGE PRESIDENT OFFERS
SALUTE TO VETERANS DAY
NOV. 11 HONORS
ALL AMERICAN VETERANS
The College of the Florida Keys honored veterans as part of its Nov. 5 festivities at Community Day on the Key West Campus. CFK President Jonathan Gueverra delivered his annual Salute to Veterans, honor ing John Parce, a Naval aviator and a member of the CFK Foundation’s board of directors:
This Veterans Day, I encourage all to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices that our service members bear for all Americans and for the principles of democracy. Our heroes continue to serve in a variety of ways that benefit our communities. I salute all veterans as well as current service men and women, including my son Julius, who is serving in the Navy. I express my sincerest thanks to them and their families for their dedication and commitment, and for their contin ued service to protecting our freedom wherever they are deployed.
The Florida Keys and the College have indeed benefitted from the con tributions of many veterans over the years. Each one deserves special recog nition. Today, I salute one veteran in the CFK family: U.S. Naval Aviator John Parce, who is a member of the CFK Foundation’s board of directors and the founder of a scholarship for nurs ing students.
Parce, whose father was a Navy pilot, was destined for a military ca reer. He grew up surrounded by strong military role models and molded by experiences brought by living in various locations across the country. Parce earned a Navy ROTC scholarship to attend Marquette University, and immediately after graduating in 1974, he enlisted in the Navy and started flight training. In his 20 years of service, he was a naval aviator, intelligence officer and military diplomat. Parce also served as the Assistant Naval At tache at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.
Parce flew in jet squadrons, pilot ing the EA3 Skywarrior over all the oceans of the world. In 1981, he was recognized as the Number Two Carrier Pilot in the Atlantic Fleet, which was composed of about 500 pilots.
During his assignments to foreign lands, Parce opted to live within the cities and towns instead of on the U.S. military bases or the aircraft carriers. He lived in Spain and in various parts
of Asia, where he immersed himself in the cultures and communities. The perspective gained enriched his personal experience and aided him professionally in his work as a military diplomat.
Parce was first introduced to Key West when he was stationed at NASKey West in 1984. Upon retiring from the Navy as a commander in 1994, he chose to move back to the island. He spent the following four years restor ing a Conch House he had purchased while on assignment. The refurbished historic home paved the way for a sec ond career helping people buy and sell houses in the Old Town neighborhood. Parce has been a full-time Realtor since 2001.
Since moving to the Keys, Parce followed the growth of the college and was particularly interested in the nursing program. He even highlighted CFK’s nursing program in an article aimed at prospective home buy ers — pointing out the quality of the program as an educational option and as a positive influence on health care services in the Keys. Parce took his interest in the college to the next level in 2020 by establishing a scholarship for nursing students. Earlier this year, he joined the CFK Foundation’s board of directors, where he is able to further expand his impact on and support of the college.
It is with great honor that on this Veterans Day 2022, the College of the Florida Keys and I salute Navy Com mander John Parce. He exemplifies the vast talent, grit and selflessness of the U.S. military. Thank you for your con tinuous service to our country, state, and community. May such achieve ments, sacrifice, and generosity serve as an inspiration for all.
— Jonathan Gueverra, College of the Florida Keys president

Key West High School Junior Swimming
Key West’s swimming program has been a strong one for many years, so to be a standout for the Conchs, it takes a little bit extra. Junior Alexander “AJ” Smith has put in the work to become one of the program’s greatest standouts. Smith won the FHSAA 2A District 16 title in the 50 freestyle event, qualifying him for regionals. While he was at it, he qualified for three more events, including two relays and the 100 freestyle individual race. His regional time of 22.75s in the 50 was fast enough to earn him a bid to states, making him the lone representative for the Conchs. Coach Lori Bosco feels that AJ has more to give at states as he zeroes in on a single race and continues to improve. For his steadfast training, stellar times and focus on teamwork, AJ Smith is this week’s Key’s Weekly Athlete of the Week.

BURSA IN ELITE COMPANY AT STATE MEET
Marathon’s top runner races to ninth place finish
Marathon’s cross country team made the long drive to Tallahassee for the Nov. 4 FHSAA 1A Cross Country State Championships at Apalachee Regional Park. The top finisher for the Dolphins was no surprise – Vaclav “Vance” Bursa has been first at the finish line all season long, and his 16:18 ninth-place finish in Tallahassee placed him in an elite group of runners, most of whom graduate in May.
Bursa is a truly talented runner who loves to chase, something he did not get to experience much this season because he was often so far in front of the rest of the field. At states, he had plenty of opportunities to run down his competition. Running his plan, developed with coach Jim Murphy, Bursa executed what Murphy called “a perfect race.”
“My strategy was to start a little slower, then pick people off,” Bursa said. “At first I was in 45th place, at the half-mile I was at 31, and at the halfway point I was 21. Then I began to pick people off and finished in ninth.” Bursa set a new personal record by three seconds and is already thinking about goals for next season.
“I want to be in the 15s,” he said. Bursa will need to drop an additional 18 seconds from his current best time, an entirely attainable goal for a runner with his work ethic and talent.
Vance will not be the only Dolphin back for more in 2023, nor will he be the only Bursa. Brothers Jakub and Antonin “Tony” are a junior and seventh grader, respectively, and every single state-qualifying Dolphin is eligible for a minimum of one more year, with a few who won’t hang up their racing flats until 2029.
The Lady Fins are similarly built for the future, with Marathon’s top three finishers on Nov. 4 still in middle school. Top finisher Sara Robinson, who qualified for the meet despite running at regionals while under the weather, completed the course in 23:21, which put her in 157th place.
“Sara crushed it,” said girls coach Darby Sheehan. “She was looking strong the entire race.”
The Lady Fins have been running in pack formation this season, supporting one another at times and challenging at others. The larger field of competition in Tallahassee made staying together challenging, but the girls didn’t abandon their strategy entirely.
“The girls stayed as a pack at the start, then they paired up,” Sheehan explained, giving them motivation and an extra push to get over the steep hills Keys runners often find challenging. Their close-knit team mentality has been the key to their success this season, and could easily mean a fifth consecutive state appearance in 2023.
Marathon’s boys and girls cross country teams have become a mainstay in distance running, and it appears they aren’t going away any time soon. Both the girls and boys teams qualified for the state championships in Tallahassee, a feat accomplished by only 32 teams statewide.
Marathon seems to relish its reputation as the little school that could. In the past few years, it had a districtwinning track and field team with no track, a state-qualifying high jumper with no pit, and one of the top cross country programs in the state with no grass or hills on which to train. The Dolphins seem to have an element of magic to make all of this happen, but the driving force behind each and every one of these events is head coach Murphy, whose eight consecutive state appearances at the FHSAA 1A Cross Country Championships were built on relentless research, hard work and a dedication to his athletes, many of whom he coaches for seven years. When pressed for the magic ingredient of his programs’ success, he said, “Consistency. There’s something to be said for individual sports and consistency. You take what you’ve built and if it isn’t broken, you keep doing what you have done but add a little each year.”

FOOTBALL SEASON OFFICIALLY CLOSES IN MONROE COUNTY
With a trip to Palmer Trinity on Nov. 3, the Coral Shores Hurricanes faced the Falcons with third place in their conference on the line. Also on the line was a bit of redemption for the ’Canes, who had their first loss of the season delivered to them by Palmer in September. Coach Ed Holly was very pleased with his team’s performance and emphasized that the game plan was not based on a revenge scenario, but geared toward his players and their success.
“Our driving force was sending our seniors out on a positive note,” he said.
This time around, the Hurricanes were the better team. Coral Shores beat the Falcons 35-27. Scoring for the ’Canes were Chuck Jacobsen with a hat trick of rushing touchdowns as well as single rushing scores from Dantay Diorio and AJ Putetti.
Holly said the big difference between the games with Palmer was that “last time, we ran out of time.” His 2022 squad secured a winning 7-3 record, up from 5-6 last year, and he looks forward to the future.
“We got better and better as the season went on,” he said. “We are looking to continue this next season.”
In the meantime, he and several seniors will focus on getting to the next level of play. Xavyer Arrington and Johnny Holly have solid offers on the table, and Chuck Jacobsen, a newcomer to football but a natural athlete, has also expressed interest in playing college ball.
Key West was hoping to stay alive in the FHSAA 2S District 16 playoff bracket with a win on Nov. 4 against Bishop Verot. A win would have created a three-way tie for first in the district, forcing a winner via power rankings. The unusual tiebreaker scenario became moot when the Conchs fell to the Vikings, 48-14.
While it was not the homecoming result the Conchs would have liked, they did put points on the board against Verot. James Reynolds scored a pair of running touchdowns, one in the second and one in the fourth quarter.
“We played hard, but gave up too many big plays,” said head coach Johnny Hughes, crediting the Vikings as “the real deal.”
Hughes said his team will now have a bit of a break, then get back to hitting the weight room to prepare for next fall. With the regular season over, Hughes’ focus will now be on seniors Andre Otto, James Reynolds and Kevon Mills as they work through the recruiting process with the hope of playing at the next level. The Conchs end their season with 4 wins and 5 losses.
Marathon’s independent status prevented them from a playoff situation, but the 5-4 Fins improved from 3-6 in ’21, securing their first winning season since 2018.
“I’m very proud of our team this season,” said coach Mac Childress. “We always played hard and were able to have a winning season. The seniors did a tremendous job of paving the way for the younger players. Moving into next year, we’re excited to see how much the underclassmen can develop.”
With the season now complete, Marathon’s Malachi Hawkins will be entertaining his options for collegiate play.
KEYS SWIMMERS ARE STATEBOUND
Coral Shores and Key West had successful regional races and both teams qualified athletes to move on to the next level: state championships. Coral Shores will compete in the FHSAA 1A Championships on Friday, Nov. 11, and Key West will participate in the 2A event on the 12th. Both events are being held in Stuart, at the Sailfish Splash Park Aquatic Athletics Center.
The ’Canes are represented by two individual swimmers and two relay teams. Corley Smith will compete in the 200 freestyle event and Abbie Sargent will represent the ’Canes in the 100 free. Both athletes will also be competing in relay events. Smith will join her sister Layne along with Olivia Sargent and Riley Cooper in the 200 freestyle relay. Abbie and Olivia Sargent will team up with Corley and Layne Smith to represent Coral Shores in the 400 freestyle relay team.
Key West’s AJ Smith will make the trip to states for the Conchs. The district champ will swim his best event, the 50 freestyle. Coming off his win at districts, Smith had quite a bit of disruption and little practice time due to the quick turnaround from districts to regionals.
“It’s hard on the swimmers to get back Friday night and have to leave three days later,” said coach Lori Bosco. With a full week of practice, AJ could have a breakout race on Saturday.

DOLPHIN RESEARCH CENTER WELCOMES SECOND CALF THIS YEAR
ALEX RICKERT www.keysweekly.com
Thestaff and dolphin pod at Dolphin Research Center celebrated an addition to the facility’s animal family for the third time in 2022, when 15-year-old dolphin Cayo gave birth to a female calf on Nov. 3.
Early on Thursday morning, staff noticed signs that the expect ant mother was in labor, and after a day of monitoring, they observed the calf’s tail flukes beginning to emerge from her body around 5:30 p.m. – typical, as baby dolphins are born tail-first.
Though Cayo is a first-time mother and the early weeks and months of the calf’s life are still a critical and guarded time period, staff say both mom and baby are thriving, with Cayo keeping her calf close by and steering her around the lagoon.
“Cayo has shown all the abili ties that we hope for as a first-time mom,” said Mary Stella, DRC’s direc tor of media and marketing. “She’s skillfully guiding that baby around. We always look really carefully at the newborns, but so far so good.”
The center’s animal care team was able to breathe easier after observing natural nursing between the calf and her mother, indicating that – for now – the baby should be
able to receive her nutrition and care from mom without a helping hand from her human family.
The development comes as welcome relief for a crew fresh off months of round-the-clock care for Bowie, another calf born at the center in late May. Unable to nurse from her biological mother, the staff’s dedication was put on full display as the baby required 24-hour companionship and feed ing in a separate pool for nearly five months before returning to her dolphin family in DRC’s natural lagoons just two weeks before the new arrival.
Though the staff is prepared to do whatever is necessary for the little one, thankfully, Cayo’s mater nal instincts have proven strong, giving the center cautious optimism for the new baby’s start to life.
“Cayo is showing all those instincts,” said Stella. “Sometimes she’ll let the baby explore a little bit, but then she’ll come right in and scoop her up. … It’s all that kind of normal mom behavior that you want to see.”
DRC staff have been kept busy welcoming three additions to their dolphin pod this year, as both Bowie and Cayo’s newborn shortly followed the arrival of Ranger, a 2-year old orphan rescued in Texas and transported to DRC in March after being deemed non-releasable.
The center will wait to name the calf until staff have had more time to observe her personality, but is accepting name suggestions at fins@dolphins.org.

What: “Mythos” by Stephen Fry
Why: Enjoy classic tales of the Greek gods, titans and the mortals unlucky enough to become entangled in the lives of the immortals, all of it filtered through the dry wit and clever mind of British comedian, actor and writer Stephen Fry. Fry lovingly retells these tales of old, warts and all, revealing many not-so-secret truths often cleaned up by prudish mythog raphers of earlier eras. Marvel at how these myths have continued into present-day popular culture, and how these names and tales inform many modern words, thoughts and ideas. An enter taining romp through the ancient Greek world that will not soon be forgotten.

WALTER FLORIMONT 1929-2022
Walter Florimont qui etly passed on to his next great adventure on Oct. 30.
Born Aug. 1, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York, Walter grew up accompany ing his father to Coney Island to main tain the park's amusement games. At just 16 years old, his parents, confident in his abilities, sent him on a Grey hound bus, small canvas tool sack in hand, across the country to maintain the games sold in the United States. So began his love of engineering, improv ing and ultimately inventing his own games. This would lead to owning and operating his own amusement complex on the beautiful Jersey Shore, bringing fun and enjoyment to count less people for over half a century.
From an early age, Walter was enchanted with the water, often commenting on his early playmate, “Dickie”: the ocean. He joined the Navy during the Korean War as an aviation electrician's mate first class assigned to duty with VX-5 at Moffett Field, Cali fornia. This was where he began his life of scuba diving in earnest – he was so proud of his Frankie Frogman dive card.
He sailed the far reaches of the Ca ribbean, and along with his wife, dove remote reefs and brought the under water world to life for so many whom he taught to sail, snorkel and dive.
Not just an inventor, sailor, diver and explorer, Walter enjoyed snow skiing and river rafting. He was a true adventurer. “Captain” or “Uncle Walter” as he was known to many, had a profound effect on the lives of those around him. His true legacy lives on through those he influenced with his love, knowledge and respect for nature and the sea.
He is survived by his wife Cynthia of 50 years, brothers-in-law Mark, Craig and Joel and their wives, nine nephews and nieces and five greatnephews and -nieces.
A celebration of life will be held at the United Methodist Marathon Com munity Church, 3010 Overseas Hwy. in Marathon on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m.
A Zoom attendance meeting number is 879 4743 3023, passcode 996544.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army in Wal ter’s memory.

‘STAGED’ ON THE HIGH SEAS
Marathon High School Drama Club Debuts ‘An Act of Piracy’
ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com
If a pirate crew storms your ship, takes your treasure and then breaks into a rousing rendition of “This Little Light of Mine” to celebrate, you’d likely have more than a few questions. And yet, that’s exactly what happens as “An Act of Piracy” comes to the Marathon High School stage this Friday through Sunday, Nov. 11-13.
A play within a play, the show follows a luckless band of actors led by Lord Cranbury (Casey Horvat). Thrown out of their most recent performance venue by innkeeper Joanna Huxley (Zyan Wiggins), the traveling troupe can’t seem to catch a break. It would help if they weren’t woefully unqualified to be on stage – one with crippling stage fright, another who can’t learn lines to save his life, and a third with a knack for changing the script onstage, to name just a few. And in an age when wom en aren’t allowed to act, Cranbury is blissfully unaware that many of his “men” aren’t being entirely forthcom ing about their true identities.
In a last-ditch effort to revital ize his thespians, Cranbury decides to put on a show about pirates and takes his merry band on the high seas for some real-life “research.” But when the crew of the newlychristened “Forth Wall” (get it?) cross paths with real-life buccaneer Reagan O’Flynn (Cecilia Vang) and pirate hunt er Jean Francois De La Haute-Valois (Nicholas Higgins), they soon discover that the ocean is full of very real dan
ger, and what began as an experiential voyage turns into a desperate attempt to escape Davy Jones’ locker.
Filled with comedic blunders, the fall show is directed by drama club mainstay Carollyn Cox, with Higgins addi tionally serving as student director. Working through what Cox described as a “rebuilding year,” the cast has seen a few experienced upperclassmen take on new leadership roles as a large number of younger actors and newcomers step into critical roles in “An Act of Piracy.”
“This is (Higgins’) second show, and I wish we got him years ago,” said Cox. “He’s got a really good eye, and he’s been my right hand.”
“He gives 100% every single day on set,” said senior classmate Riley McDonald. “He does the accent, he knows his lines. I think it rubs off on people when you see some one from day one going the extra mile.”
Behind the scenes, senior stage manager Maicon San tos has the technical aspects of the show on lock. With tech whizzes Dante Senmartin and Leo Volchek lost to gradua tion in 2022, Santos’ tireless efforts have fulfilled a critical need backstage.
“He’s been here I can’t even tell you how many hours a day, ahead of everyone else,” said Cox. “He’s here early, he’s here late, he’s here every study hall that he has.”
With eight weeks of rehearsal under their belts, the stage and high seas are set to bring to life a show that, in McDonald’s words “exemplifies the female spirit.” Show time is 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. mati nee on Sunday. General admission tickets are $10 at the door or can be purchased by scanning the attached QR code. And if you plan to make your way to the auditorium this weekend, carry senior Billy Martin’s recommended backup plan:
“Bring an extra change of pants.”

KING OF THE CRABS
NEW RECORD SET AT FLORIDA KEYS STONE CRAB EATING CONTEST
A PRESCRIPTION FOR BETTER POLITICAL ADVERTISING
Contestants leave nothing behind as they dig into their 25 claws. CONTRIBUTED
AFlorida Keys commercial fisherman set a new record to win this year’s Keys Fisheries’ Stone Crab Eating Contest in the Florida Keys.
Twenty-eight participants, divided into individual and team divisions, participated in the raucous amateur eating competition in Marathon.
Contestants had to crack and eat 25 stone crab claws and pick them completely clean in the fastest time. Participants received a 30-second pen alty for any claw meat left behind.
Big Pine Key resident Bobby Hanousek far outpaced competitors to finish in 10 minutes, 23 seconds, shattering the previous record of 14 minutes, 29 seconds.
Hanousek, who works as a com mercial stone crab and lobster fisher man, said this was his first time in the stone crab eating competition.
“I saw everybody else smash ing them all at one time, and others
smashing them one at a time,” Ha nousek said. “I just went one at a time, so I didn’t leave any behind and get penalized.”
His strategy worked, leading him to shave over four minutes off the previous record. Prizes included cer tificates for jewelry, a fishing charter, a Keys hotel stay and more.
Marathon residents Ryan Becket and Felicita Franco claimed the top team title, finishing in six minutes and 34 seconds, a new team record.
Stone crabs are considered a renewable resource because of the crabs’ ability to re-grow harvested claws. The Florida Keys are responsible for about half of the state’s stone crab harvest that averages about 2 million pounds annually, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Stone crab harvest season runs Oct. 15 to May 1.

Ihave, from time to time in this col umn, commented on the plethora of prescription drug commercials that saturate the TV schedules. Whatever anyone’s particular malady, from erectile dysfunction to dry eye, there’s a pill for that. Just ask your doctor if the drug in the commercial is right for you!
Because of those pesky federal laws put in place to protect the con sumer, however, each drug commer cial has to list the possible side effects it may cause. The pill you take for dry eye may cause constipation. The pre scription that helps you quit smoking may cause thoughts of suicide. And we all know what needs to be done if you have an erection lasting longer than four hours…
Sadly, there has been little room in the TV, print, radio, and social media ad schedules lately for these wonder drug ads. Since the Citizens United decision was squeezed out of the Supreme Court, corporations (and rich people masquerading as cor porations) have been falling all over themselves to try and buy elections for their favorite candidates. The strategy that corporations and can didates all use: they throw as much muck and mud as possible against the candidate they oppose. It doesn’t really matter if any of it is actually true — repeat it enough times on TV (or in those obnoxious mailers) and people will believe it.
I, like most people who write for fun and money, am an ardent sup porter of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. I do not want a government telling me what I can and can’t write. I am also an ardent supporter of at least trying to get it right, and I believe that politi cal campaigns and their surrogates should be held accountable for their lies.
Perhaps we should add FDA-style side-effect disclaimers like the ones in the prescription drug ads! That could shake things up a bit, if candidates and campaigns knew they would be called on their own BS before the commercial was even off the air. Imagine a political advertisement script like this:
Voiceover: Candidate A is the picture of corruption. When this can didate served on the Animal Control Board, he funneled money away from
JOHN BARTUS
the dog and cat food budgets to build a lavish office complex for his cronies. Candidate A is an animal hater, and he can’t be trusted as your representative. Vote for Candidate B instead!
Disclaimer: Candidate B’s charges are a smokescreen of false charges de signed to keep you from looking at Candidate B’s re cord that includes a six-count indictment for embez zling money from the Senior Citizens’ Bingo Fund. Candidate A reduced the pet food budget because he got more animals adopted, and the “lavish of fice complex” was a building man dated by state law.
is the Mayor of the City of Mara thon. He also is a musician who performs around town. For more see johnbartus. com
Public figures (including candi dates for office) are held to a differ ent standard when it comes to libel and slander laws — it’s much harder for a public figure to file and win such a lawsuit. But the candidates and cor porations who create and place some of the lies that have populated the broadcast airwaves and mailboxes this year should not be allowed that leeway and latitude, especially when one side’s lies actually influence the result of an election.
One of my favorite fact-checking sites is PolitiFact. They evaluate can didate statements with their Truth-OMeter that gives readings like True, Partly True, False and Pants-On-Fire. It’s just too bad that the Truth-OMeter can’t be part of every political advertisement that hits the airwaves. A little prescription for truth in adver tising could go a long way in restor ing some honest political discourse to our election years — and it might also have the side effect of helping to keep sleazy disgusting people from running for elective office. And no Electoral Dysfunction is a side effect we all could use.
I’m John Bartus, and I approve this message!
— Catch John each Monday at Boondocks, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Key Colony Inn, and Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing. Find his music anywhere you download or stream your music. www.johnbartus.com

Communityleaders from Key Largo to Key West escaped with fingers and toes intact as Leadership Monroe County’s Class XXX – the best class – reunited for its second session on Nov. 4-6: a three-day trip from Key Largo through the Ever glades National Park.
Beginning with a classroom session and boat ride at Key Largo’s MarineLab, the 21 members of Class XXX received an education on the connections between the Keys’ grass bed, coral reef and open ocean ecosystems before travel ing to the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority to learn the exact science behind some of the nation’s clean est tap water. (Did you know it’s tested 219 times per day?)
From there, the weekend was a whirlwind of environmental wonder as the class visited four museums and nature trails interspersed be tween tours of one of Florida’s most
crucial ecological centers via boats, swamp buggies and airboats. As is tradition in the program, members of Class XXIX “Delta Force” returned to Everglades City’s Rod and Gun Club on Saturday night to provide a dinner and celebration of LMC’s 30th anniversary.
Founded in 1992, the LMC pro gram is aimed at community resi dents who are active in leadership roles in the private sector, govern ment or community organizations. Through a series of one- and twoday sessions, participants examine fundamental segments of the local community and gather information to help them make quality leader ship decisions. The program has a strong alumni base and urges all graduates of the program to stay tuned for Leadership alumni events throughout the Keys as the pro gram returns to full force in a postCOVID world.
