f his team can satisfy a lengthy but reasonable to-do list, renowned stuntman Travis Pastrana will make a return to Marathon next month.

At its regular meeting on June 14, the Marathon City Council gave a conditional approval for an event permit that would send Pastrana over the open span of the Boot Key Harbor Bridge in a heavily customized car while a helicopter hovers in the gap below.

The discussion item was brought forward by Mayor John Bartus after a request by Hoonigan Industries to perform the stunt in January was denied by city staff, citing liability concerns and doubts about the condition of the bridge.

With a presentation to the council highlighting the Hoonigan crew’s extensive experience and safety record performing similar feats, Hoonigan producer David Wells noted the stunt’s potential to provide increased worldwide visibility to the city of Marathon.

“The Gymkhana series is the most

viewed motorsport film on the internet,” said Wells. “The last film recently crossed 50 million views since being released in 2020. … The true hero is the location and its community. … The film is a postcard of the city, one that will be seen by millions.”

Wells also offered a $30,000 donation from production company People First Media to be used by the city for youth programs.

While city attorney Steve Williams said he personally would like to see the unique stunt performed, questions about Marathon’s ability to protect itself from risk precluded him from formally recommending the shoot. One of Williams’ main concerns was the possibility of rendering vessels with deeper drafts unable to leave Boot Key Harbor if debris from a crumbling bridge were to block the harbor’s west entrance.

“The short version is, we asked (our insurance company) in anticipation of this meeting, ‘What would we need to ask these folks for a policy should they accidentally hit the bridge or should something go wrong?’” said Williams. “Our insurance company wouldn’t even give us a number. With-

out proper insurance, my answer is 100% no, the city should not do this.”

Public Works and Engineering Director Carlos Solis echoed Williams’ sentiments, adding that the last FDOT inspection of the bridge in 2008 revealed 100% loss in some columns.

“That was 14 years ago, so we have no idea what’s out there now,” said Solis. “My biggest concern, even if something doesn’t happen now, is if you have an accident, is that going to progress the decay of that bridge?

And then we get stuck with that bill because it’s a year and a half down the road and everybody’s long gone.”

Contending that the bridge’s structural members responsible for absorbing the impact of the car’s landing are in good condition and that the stress of the 3,000-pound car is a tiny fraction of what the bridge was built to handle, team engineer Eric Helt said the jump was highly unlikely to cause any significant damage.

“The dead load of the bridge itself, in comparison to the car, it’s peanuts,” he said. “We’re putting on 3,000 pounds, so you’re talking 1% of the load. If that bridge is standing there now, us adding 1% isn’t going to make or break this thing.”

Though Hoonigan crew members said they expected full partnership with FWC, Marathon Fire Rescue, the Monroe County Sheriff and the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure safety throughout the process, several organizations indicated to the council and Keys Weekly that they have yet to be contacted about the stunt.

“I certainly would like to see this happen, and I think the way we do this is to try to make sure that our collective conditions are met,” said Bartus.

“The people that are putting this thing on do have an incredibly good reputation. … You’re hearing it from a lot of people who are a part of this business.”

“I grew up with Evil Knievel and love to watch the jumps. But I think we would be fools not to listen to our city attorney and our city professional engineer,” said councilman Dan Zieg.

With Zieg and councilman Luis Gonzalez voting against the stunt, the council granted conditional approval for the jump, scheduled for July 11.

city on its $10 million insurance indemnity policy and provide the city with a written operational plan.

The production company must also coordinate with, have commitments from, and pay necessary expenses for the services of personnel from Marathon Fire Rescue, FWC, the Coast Guard and MCSO. It must enter into a written contract with Marathon Seawalls and Docks to stand by should debris fall into the channel after the jump. Before the stunt, the company will also pay for a five-ton load test on the landing side of the bridge to ensure its ability to absorb the car’s landing.

IN OTHER NEWS: • The council unanimously approved a $30,000 donation to Keys AHEC in support of medical and dental care for vulnerable Keys youth.

• The council directed city manager George Garrett and finance director Jennifer Johnson to enter into negotiations with Key Colony Beach officials regarding the balance of the two cities’ contributions toward fire rescue and EMS expenses.

Noting that the taxable values of Marathon and KCB properties are in roughly a 4:1 ratio, but that Key Colony’s contributions toward fire and EMS expenses fall short of this same ratio, Zieg indicated that KCB administrator David Turner has been “very reasonable about knowing that Marathon has subsidized the KCB residents.”

• Code director Ted Lozier informed the council that the city has entered into a contract with Deckard Technologies to help identify and eventually cite illegal vacation rentals within the city that are advertised online. The service should be operational by the end of June. Lozier also pointed out that the city’s new sign ordinance passed in March has passed through review at the state level and is now effective.

• The council unanimously voted to reject a settlement sent by the state Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) regarding its February issuance of a Notice of Violation (NOV) to the city. The NOV was issued when the city issued building permits for limited units of a development known as the 39th Street “Boatworks Project” while other units in the same development were undergoing an appeal by the state. Garrett indicated that city staff will travel to Tallahassee on Monday, June 20 to resolve remaining issues with DEO surrounding the NOV. City staff will also work with DEO to work through lingering questions about the city’s new permits Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in May. • In the interest of decreasing permit wait times for residents, the council unanimously approved an ordinance shortening permit application review period from 30 days to five.

• The council unanimously voted to adopt an ordinance establishing a tow-away zone along both sides of Sombrero Beach Road from the beach to Spoonbill Drive, as well as a second zone along the golf course side of Sombrero Boulevard.

efore members of the Monroe County School Board heard an update on the new Key West High School football stadium, they heard an earful from a few Cudjoe Key residents representing a conservative group known as Moms for Liberty and Lower Keys Conservatives.

The meeting took place June 14 at Key West’s City Hall, where Cudjoe Key resident Gina Bosic questioned the presence of a rainbow flag and a Ukrainian flag.

“We say the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and here there’s a rainbow flag,” she said with disgust. “And there’s a Ukrainian flag out front. I’ve done some research into, not what the mainstream media tells you, but what’s really going on in Ukraine.”

Bosic then lambasted the school board for a book she saw in a public county library about “gender queer. It’s disgusting. I’m disgusted that it would even be tolerated. How would that even get into the public system?” Bosic said.

Superintendent Theresa Axford, along with board chair John Dick and Mindy Conn, emphasized to the Keys Weekly following the meeting that the Bosic mentioned is in a public county library, not a school library.

In other news, construction of Key West High School’s new Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium is on track to begin in May 2023, after next year’s baseball season. The upcoming football season will be played at The Backyard at the high school on Flagler Avenue.

Pat Lefere, the school district’s director of operations and planning, told the board that the cost estimate for phase 1 of the new stadium stands at $16.4 million, an increase from the $15 million that was originally budgeted.

The first phase will include new football bleachers, a new home team locker room, a new visiting team bunkhouse and locker room due to the high cost of hotels in

Key West. The baseball side of the complex at Rex Weech Field will get a new press box and refurbished bleachers and a new but temporary concession stand, Lefere said.

Board member Mindy Conn reminded the board of prior concerns about the new football bleachers encroaching on and shortening the baseball outfield.

Lefere said the bleacher design had changed so the baseball outfield will be the same as it is now, within a few feet, and the football bleachers will retain their current capacity of 3,000 seats.

Phase 1 of the project is slated to be mostly complete by January 2024, Lefere said.

Also, the board voted to move ahead on housing at the district’s Trumbo Road headquarters by seeking housing proposals from potential developers based on an unsolicited proposal received from the developer of the neighboring, luxury Steam Plant condominiums. That company had proposed about 75 homes and a new administration building. But the school board has indicated it wants more housing and no administration building on that site. The Steam Plant development group also can amend its initial proposal to reflect the board’s desires and resubmit a proposal.

COUNTY SEEKS FEDERAL FUNDS FOR PROJECTS MONEY SOUGHT FOR CARD SOUND BRIDGE AND COASTAL STORM RISK STUDY JIM McCARTHY jim@keysweekly.com

onroe County commissioners unanimously approved a list of federal legislative priorities, which include U.S. 1 revetments and shoreline stabilization and Card Sound Bridge replacement planning, during a June 15 meeting at the Murray Nelson Government Center in Key Largo.

Keeping flood insurance premiums affordable, federal disaster-related funding and coral reef protection are among the other priorities the county hopes senators and representatives in Washington, D.C., will support.

An approved and signed 2022 federal budget included some $5.4 million the county requested to help fund a flood mitigation project for the Twin Lakes community in Key Largo. A flood-prone community, the project includes road elevation and new drainage, as well as stormwater collection.

Greg Burns, federal lobbyist for Thorn Run Partners who represents Monroe County, said it was the first time in a decade that Congress considered such requests.

U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez made the request on behalf of Monroe County.

“The congressman really did deliver for you,” Burns said. “We worked with your (county) team to identify Twin Lakes as something we felt was competitive for funding.”

Now, county officials are hoping Congress will be willing to grant more requests as it begins work on a 2023 budget. The county’s new appropriation requests to Congress include $1.8 million for planning, design and engineering for a Card Sound Bridge replacement project. It’s one of 26 bridges that Monroe County maintains, and one of two evacuation routes from the Florida Keys to the mainland.

Constructed in 1969, Card Sound Bridge is scheduled for replacement to ensure the continued safety of the route. Monroe County is requesting funding for 80% of the estimated cost for the planning, design and engineering phase of the project. The remaining 20% of the estimated cost will be funded locally.

County officials are also hoping to secure $1,040,000 in federal funds for planning, engineering and design for U.S. 1 revetments and shoreline stabilization portion of the Monroe County Coastal Storm Risk Management Project. For the past few years, the

county has partnered with the Army Corps of Engineers on a feasibility study, using previously approved hurricane supplemental funding from Congress, to propose storm damage mitigation strategies.

The planning, engineering and design phase cost is shared, 65% from federal funds and 35% non-federal money. The county is working with the Florida Department of Transportation, the owner of U.S. 1, to assist with the non-federal costs.

“We’re excited to put these forward,” Burns said, adding that Gimenez made the two requests on behalf of the county. “We don’t know if either are funded yet. Congress is just beginning the work.”

In addition to supporting a federal legislative agenda, the board of county commissioners approved an agreement totalling $80,000 with Thorn Run Partners for federal lobbying services on behalf of Monroe County. The terms of the agreement end May 31, 2023.

Other county priorities include making changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) by limiting annual rate increases to no more than 9% per year for policyholders. Right now, those rates could increase 18% per year, Burns said. Congress will need to reauthorize the program, which expires Sept. 30.

“Many people see NFIP as being completely broken,” Burns said, adding that President Biden’s administration recently released a proposal that would change the program. “This is not a partisan issue. It tends to be dependent upon how significant flooding can be in your community.”

Coral restoration is another federal legislative priority for Monroe County. Burns said the federal government has invested around $30 million annually over the past 20 years, but the health of coral is still declining.

Burns said he’s working to help pass Sen. Marco Rubio’s Restoring Resilient Reefs Act, which would propose more investment for restoration and more funds for emergency coral restoration.

“The status quo hasn’t worked over the past 20 yeras,” Burns said. “It just hasn’t worked. Congress has the opportunity to help and save what we have left. This is the best chance right now to get this bill passed.”

Burns added that the entire Florida delegation supports this bill.

In other matters, the BOCC received the final technical results of a roads study. A presentation showed a final estimate of $1.6 billion to adjust roughly 311 miles of road in unincorporated Monroe County that are vulnerable to sea level rise by 2045.

“When looking at potential adaptations to the county’s road infrastructure, this process determined which roads are vulnerable by 2045, how high they need to be elevated, and when they need to be elevated,” said

A variety of funding sources, such as grants and infrastructure sales tax initiatives, will be needed to pay for the projects. Monroe County officials say they are researching options for funding sources for these largescale resilience projects, including the state’s “Resilient Florida” program.

The county is about to move forward with the construction of the pilot road elevation projects in the Twin Lakes subdivision in Key Largo and Sands subdivision in Big Pine Key using grant funding. Stillwright Point in Key Largo will begin its design phase under a state grant.

FISHERMEN UNDER FIRE FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY Two arrested following PETA video release ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com

T

wo fishermen have been arrested on felony charges of animal cruelty and misdemeanor resource violations following the release of video footage from a commercial fishing vessel by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

On June 1, FWC officers arrested Charles Mora, 30, after an investigation that began in late February 2022.

Though the incident took place on board a Marathon-based fishing vessel, the arrest report lists Mora with a Key Largo residence.

Although FWC officials initially indicated to Keys Weekly that the arrest warrant for Michael Bossert, 52, was confidential as it had not yet been served, the agency learned a day later that Bossert had already turned himself in in late May outside of Monroe County.

His last known addresses listed on his warrant were in Marathon and Bonifay, Florida.

According to the pair of arrest warrants, the investigation and charges stem from a video recorded in November 2021 and released by PETA in which Mora appears to rip the mantle – the large bulbous area on top of the animal, known to house many of its internal organs – off a live octopus, tossing the mantle overboard and leaving the rest of the animal to die slowly in a bin.

The same batch of footage also appears to show Bossert removing a small nurse shark from a trap, then slamming it twice against the side of the boat. He then appears to cut the shark into pieces to be used as trap bait.

“An unidentified voice can be heard in the background of the video saying, ‘Let’s probably not get that on video,’ then later one saying, ‘The F-Dub is going to be after us,’” reads Bossert’s arrest warrant.

The video was recorded by PETA informant Kerin Rosen, who told FWC investigators that she met workers aboard the Marathon-based vessel “Booga Man” as they were unloading their catch by Keys Fisheries. According to the warrants, Rosen told the workers “she was interested in the commercial fishing industry and wanted to learn more about it and asked to go out with them on their boat on November 19, 2021.

They agreed to take her along with them … as an observer.”

On board the boat, Rosen began “openly recording,” according to PETA attorney Jared Goodman. The full-length edited video eventually released by PETA was intended to question the practice of removing claws from living stone crabs, as the organization’s attorneys are making a separate case against FWC that the required harvesting practice is illegal and also constitutes animal cruelty.

“We’re certainly glad to see that prosecutors are pursuing this because the scientific evidence shows that octopuses feel pain and are intelligent,” Goodman told Keys Weekly. “They use tools, they recognize human faces, and disemboweling them causes them excruciating pain and is inherently illegal.”

Nurse sharks in Florida must meet a minimum size limit of 54 inches and may only be harvested with hook and line. Though the shark killed in the video also appears to fall short of this requirement and appears to be bycatch – a non-target species caught inadvertently – removed from a trap, Goodman said PETA specifically asked FWC to take action “only on the basis of cruelty to animals.”

Mora faces a third-degree felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty, carrying a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. In addition to his own count of aggravated animal cruelty, Bossert also faces second-degree misdemeanor charges of possession of an undersize nurse shark and failing to land a shark in whole condition.

Bond was set at $10,000 for Mora and $30,000 for Bossert, according to the arrest warrants.

GAS PRICES FUEL CONCERNS LOCAL CAPTAINS AND TOURISM EXPERTS WEIGH IN

R

emember when 20 bucks could fill your little car’s tank more than halfway? Remember when 10 bucks could get you from Key West to Marathon, at least?

Those days are long gone, and economic experts don’t know when the pain at the pump will subside.

In the Florida Keys island chain, summer tourism depends on the drive-down market of people vacationing from elsewhere in Florida, as well as Georgia and the Carolinas.

But their travel costs have skyrocketed, with Florida’s average gas prices hovering around $5 a gallon.

The spikes are also a huge concern for local boaters, charter captains, dive boats and watersports companies.

“As the pain threshold of $5/gallon as the national average for gas has just been reached, there is likely to be some impact; we are just not sure where it will be felt or how deep,” said Stacey Mitchell, director of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. “I’m confident the summer tourism season will remain steady, but I believe consumer price point behaviors have already begun to change. They still want to travel and are still planning summer vacations, but they’re having to make adjustments to spending habits.”

Mitchell pointed out that in prior economic “headwinds,” vacation rentals and other properties with cooking capabilities “provided intrinsic value, as meals could be prepared; the guest could stock their own bar, and folks bringing down their own boats could go snorkeling or fishing without hiring a private captain.”

“While still popular for the summer visitor, this year those gas and marine fuel costs as well as grocery bills have leveled the savings playing field,” Mitchell said. “In addition, if you’re a mom on vacation, going to Publix to buy groceries, unloading them and then preparing meals in a rental unit doesn’t quite feel like a real vacation — at least it wouldn’t for me.”

She said fuel costs and lodging rates could prompt some visitors to shorten their stays, curtail some attractions and watersport activities and eat at less expensive restaurants.

“As we look forward toward the Independence Day holiday and the busiest month for summer vacations (July), the TDC office will be closely monitoring consumer behaviors to determine what impact the current economic situation is having on our local economy,” Mitchell said.

Meanwhile, at the dock Captain Bill Giliberti is the owner of Marathon-based Top Notch Sportfishing. Though he says he increased the price of his charters in early 2022 to cover rising costs of fuel, bait and tackle, among other expenses, and says that most of his clients have understood, he wonders how far the increases can go before his clientele dries out.

“I increased my price, and my profit margins didn’t go up,” he said. “The thing is, where is the realistic breaking point where someone’s going to say ‘No, I’m not going to go charter fishing out of principle because I’m not going to pay that much money’?”

Though he’s in business to make a living for himself, Giliberti is conscious of the fact that most of his clients don’t understand his industry and may be visiting the Keys for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation – something he doesn’t want to derail with fuel bills for a boat trip.

In his mind, charters have a responsibility to inform their clients as soon as they decide to raise prices to allow for potential changes in vacation plans. And on his boat, if a client books a charter and he raises his prices between the booking and the scheduled trip, he only has one option: “I eat it.”

“If I give someone a price for something, that’s what it is,” he said. “I come from a middle-class family. We save up all year to go on a one-week vacation. If a family budgets their vacation to come down here, that extra $200 could be the breaking point to where they’re like, ‘No, we can’t afford to go.’”

With multiple boats in his High Caliber Sportfishing armada, Marathon Capt. Jimmy Gagliardini said each boat feels the pinch of the fuel hikes differently based on its engine configuration. He, like others, has recently raised his charter prices across the board to cover a portion of his rising expenses, but he’s also wary of a tolerance threshold for his potential customers.

“I’m fishing a half-day right now for $900,” he said. “Am I supposed to raise that price? At what point will people say no? I feel like I’m at that point now where it’s sticker shock.”

When it comes to fuel surcharges, Gagliardini said his increases don’t pass all of the extra expenses on to the customer.

“Going up $100 to go offshore dolphin fishing on a 31-foot Contender really doesn’t cover all the fuel,” he said. “Basically, I’m almost splitting it with them. So far, 100% have understood. I’m just trying to keep it somewhat reasonable to where I’m not overwhelming the customer with the cost and I can still make money.

“We’re doing the best we can just to weather it out. It’ll eventually go back down, but I don’t know when that will be.”

PAUL RICKERT OK, so he’s not a Keys dad, but the week wouldn’t be complete without Keys Weekly editor Alex Rickert wishing his own dad a happy Father’s Day. Much to the likely chagrin of his father Paul, who began college as an acting major, the younger Rickert displayed zero aptitude for the theatrical arts throughout his first 24 years. However, an invitation to join the Marathon Community Theatre’s production of “Cabaret” in 2017 ignited a shared passion. And exactly 40 years after Paul played the lead role of J. Pierrepont Finch in the musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” the younger Rickert finally followed in his father’s thespian footsteps, landing the same role at MCT. Thanks for all the support and for passing on just a fraction of the talent, Dad!

ERIC GUZMAN Eric Guzman is the new General Manager of Speciality Hardware in Marathon, but he’s no stranger on the “dad circuit” as his nine year old son Mateo is involved in many activities including sports and Cub Scouts.

“I am proud of many things in life, but nothing beats being a dad - Mateo’s dad,” he says. His secret: Try not stress over the little things. “It is what it is.” As for a dad joke, Eric asks, “Did you hear about the guy that lost his entire left arm in a motorcycle accident? He’s all RIGHT now…get it?”

MATT HUTCHINSON This Sunday, Matt Hutchinson and his girls Lily (7) and Hannah (10) will be celebrating Father’s Day on vacation in northwest Ohio.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY. TO CELEBRATE, WE OFFER OUR…

ALL-TIME FAVORITE MOVIE DADS 10. Jason Styles — “Boyz n the Hood” (1991). Fifty years from now, Americans will look back at the social significance of this film, which remains a classic to this day. But it is also a movie about a father’s tough love for a son he is trying to save from the brutal environment of gang warfare and the hate bred from social injustice. And we can’t imagine anyone playing the part other than Laurence Fishburne.

9. Ben — “Captain Fantastic” (2016).

This film is one of the greatest movie snubs in Oscar history, but it remains one of the greatest tales about a father’s unconditional devotion to his children — regardless of his unconventional methods. In an era of tablets, cellphones and family disconnects, this movie challenges contemporary norms about our ability to enrich and empower our children with the tools that matter. Ben is played by Viggo Mortenson, who is the only actor to land twice on our Hollywood dad list (see #7).

8. Bryan Mills — “Taken” (2008). Why? Because if your father has a “particular set of skills,” the bad guys should probably leave you alone. Today, Liam Neeson continues to pump out action movies based on his Taken franchise fame, but one thing is for sure, the guy would stop at nothing to save his daughter.

5. Marlin — “Finding Nemo” (2003).

The greatest dilemma for any father is the balance between being overprotective and allowing your children to experience life. Yet Disney brilliantly captured one of life’s most beautiful struggles through the lives of clownfish in a remarkable comingof-age classic.

4. Cameron Poe — “Con Air’ (1997): Although Nicolas Cage is making a comeback, there was a time he was an A-lister amongst the A-listers and “Con Air” was his masterpiece. We got to see Cameron Poe defeat the most vile prisoners in the world, endure Dave Chapelle’s jabs and avoid the genius of John Malkovich’s evil— all to get home (along with a teddy bear) to his little girl.

3. Guido Orefice —“Life is Beautiful” (1997): Why? Because if you’ve ever watched this film and tried not to cry … you failed. Every time. It’s the movie about a father’s sacrifice during one of the darkest moments in history. Roberto Benigni directed and starred in the film, earning him just about every award under the cinematic sun.

7. Man — “The Road” (2009). The book was a masterpiece, so let’s not compare the brilliance of Cormac McCarthy to a movie. But Viggo Mortenson was able to do justice to one of the greatest novels ever written. Whether the father was taking his son on the right path is debatable, but his love for his son is undeniable in this apocalyptic tale that has never been matched.

2. Atticus Finch — “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962): Why? Because he was a civil rights badass before it was cool.

Today the book is being banned because “it makes readers uncomfortable about race.” We hate to break it to those folks, but that is exactly what author Harper Lee set out to accomplish with her protagonist Atticus Finch. In the end, a movie was made and who better to play the role of father than Gregory Peck, installing the values of fairness, equality and morals to his daughter.

6. Daniel Hillard — “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) Why? Because dedication means spending time with your children no matter the means, even if you need to dress up like an aging nanny.

Robin Williams could have played a tree stump and we would all still watch it, but this movie worked during the era it was created and it certainly showcased the genius of the late, great actor.

1. Clark Griswold — National Lampoon’s Movie Franchise: Why? Because we said so and we’re not apologizing for this one. The goofy, yet enduring love Clark Griswold portrayed for his family are some of the most memorable and quotable movie moments in cinematic history.

In the end, he did it all for family, with a little help from Ellen, Cousin Eddie and Snot.

PAPER TITLES NOW AVAILABLE AT ALL TAX COLLECTOR OFFICES

M

onroe County residents can now obtain a paper title at any tax collector offices in the Florida Keys, thanks to the recent installation of specialized title-printing equipment, Monroe County Tax Collector Sam C. Steele announced recently.

Previously, residents could only obtain a printed title at the Key West main office or Plantation Key branch office locations.

“Adding these printers at every office makes it easy and convenient for residents to come in and get a printed title, or what we also commonly refer to as a ‘fast title,’” said Steele. “This is especially significant for Marathon area residents who previously had to drive two hours round trip for this service with hopes they would not have to make a return trip due to not having the proper documents at the time.”

The new title printers are the latest in a series of enhancements implemented by Steele.

In late 2021, an online virtual assistant was added to MonroeTaxCollector.com to help customers get answers to commonly asked questions and conduct business with the office 24/7. Additionally, a new appointment system was added in early 2022, giving residents the ability to schedule, change and cancel appointments for several tax collector services.

The birds I was seeing were, to my mind, in one of the more ideal situations for them – the fenced-off grass at the base of the FAA tower near Higgs Beach, which is generally free from human or canine interruption. And it had rained a day or two before, so the whole area was flooded like a private, little, grassy swamp.

Ibises feed by shoving those long, curving bills down into the ground, hunting for crustaceans, grubs, worms and other subterranean invertebrates. They have bundles of nerves in the tips of their bills to help them feel prey in places they cannot see. With the ground as waterlogged as it was, it no doubt made all that poking and probing easier, and there seemed to be something of a frenzied and buoyant mood in the flock.

At first I wasn’t sure about the iridescence. The bird was far back, on its own and away from the flock. It seemed like a wide open habitat, but the grass must have been higher than it looked because the bird kept appearing then disappearing behind the bigger clumps. It was possible it was just an immature white ibis in weird light and I’d given the impressionistic, seat-of-the-pants part of my brain a little too much rein.

I tried to get a decent shot of the bird with my camera, but between the chain link fence and all the rogue stalks of grass everywhere, the autofocus was hunting and seeking in all the wrong places. It wasn’t the iridescence I was trying to capture.

Like a black light poster, that stuff never conveys to a camera the way it does to a human eye. I was trying to get a shot of the bird’s belly to make sure there wasn’t any white in there, to confirm my suspicions.

Finally I gave up and went old school, and just followed the bird with my binoculars. And after some intense staring it turned out the impressionistic, seat-of-the-pants part of my brain was right – there was a low-key, multi-hued gleam to the feathers, making it a glossy ibis.

Birds’ plumages get their colors in two different ways, from pigments in the feathers – either genetically encoded or acquired through diet – or from structures in the feathers that refract light.

Glossy Ibis get their colors both ways. The blacks and dark browns of their plumage come from pigments, but the green/ purple/burgundy soap bubble-like sheen comes from structural elements in their feathers that deflect different parts of the light spectrum. It’s best seen in real life, but an impressionistic bird painter, like David Sibley, does a far better job conveying what the human eye sees than a photo.

Glossy ibises are not the rarest bird in the world. They might be the most common and cosmopolitan of all the ibises, seen regularly on every continent but Antarctica. But this was not always the case.

The first glossy ibis recorded in North America was seen in 1817. John James Audubon included a painting of one in his Birds of America, but he only saw a single living glossy ibis in his lifetime.

By the 1950s, though, they were considered somewhat common, the bulk of them living in Florida, with notable colonies upstate in places like Lake Okeechobee and the St. Johns River. And their territories have spread outside of Florida as far north as New Brunswick, Canada, and as far west as Louisiana. (Nothing I have ever read has posited that they got to the Americas by anything other than a natural range expansion, despite the suspicious circumstances of them showing up in a post-colonial era.)

Glossy ibis are not what you would call rare in the Keys, but they are uncommon and irregular. Standing outside the chainlink by the tower I couldn’t remember the last time I had seen one in the Keys. It had been a few years. I tried to remember the last time I had seen one up in the Everglades, and couldn’t come up with a distinct memory from there, either.

I followed the bird for a long time, sporadically taking shots.

Twenty frames. A hundred frames. I watched it move toward all the white ibises and then mix in on their crustacean crunching scrum, and shot a few hundred more frames. Most of them were going to be garbage shots and I wondered why I felt so compelled to keep shooting.

I think I just really missed seeing the strange things those feathers could do to light. And until then I didn’t even know I missed it.

GOVERNOR VETOES CONTROVERSIAL WATER SUPPLY BILL DeSantis: ‘Florida’s natural resources has been a top priority’ JIM McCARTHY

lorida Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed a Senate bill that would have changed the equitable distribution of water from Lake Okeechobee south to the Everglades and Florida Bay. During a June 8 press conference in Fort Myers, DeSantis said he heard from many fishing guides and clean water advocates throughout Florida who voiced opposition to the bill over the past several months.

“Protecting Florida’s natural resources has been a top priority since my first day in office,” DeSantis said.

“The health of the Everglades, Florida’s springs, and so many other resources are the foundation of our communities and economy and play an important role in the everyday lives of Floridians.”

Halfway through the Florida legislative session in February, Senate leaders fast-tracked Senate Bill 2508, which included water-related policy changes that would be written into law. And some groups, including the Captains for Clean Water, believed the bill gave preferential treatment to the sugar industry. It was filed as a budget conforming bill, which allowed it to circumvent the standard legislative process and minimized opportunity for public input.

Captains for Clean Water applauded the governor’s decision to veto the bill. The group of guides, including those from the Keys, ventured to Tallahassee during session to inform legislators of the bill’s negative effects.

“Thank you Governor DeSantis for standing firm in your commitment to protect Florida’s waterways by vetoing Senate Bill 2508 — the bad water policy that would have reversed years of Everglades restoration and water quality progress, elimination of Lake Okeechobee discharges, and equitable distribution of water use, all in favor of Big Sugar,” said Capt. Daniel Andrews, executive director for Captains for Clean Water.

Per the Captains for Clean Water, legislation in its original form affected two critical components to solving south Florida’s water crisis. It undermined the new lake operations schedule (LOSOM) which is slated to reduce harmful Lake Okeechobee discharges by 37% annually and send three times more water south to the Everglades and Florida Bay. It also prioritized additional projects which could have diluted funding for the EAA Reservoir, the cornerstone project of Everglades restoration.

Chauncey Goss, South Florida Water Management District chairman, said the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 2508 is yet another example of his commitment to the protection of Florida’s water resources.

The Friends of the Everglades also lauded the governor’s veto in a message to its supporters.

“We recognized the hazard this bill would pose to fragile wetlands, water management and land preservation across Florida. It had to be stopped.

We issued a call to action to help us shut it down, and you did not disappoint.”

DeSantis was in Fort Myers to highlight the signing of the “Freedom First” budget and more than $1.2 billion for Everglades restoration. His office said Florida has DeSantis’ four-year goal with a total investment of more than $3.3 billion for Everglades restoration and the protection of water resources since 2019. The 2022-23 budget included $352.6 million for Everglades restoration.

“This legislative session was an opportunity to continue our momentum on the EAA Reservoir – a fundamental component of restoring the natural flow of water from Lake Okeechobee through the Everglades to the Florida Keys – and resulted in the funding needed to continue to drive this project forward,” said Everglades Foundation CEO Eric Eikenberg.

‘BRAIN BUS’ VISITS FLORIDA KEYS Alzheimer’s Association provides resources to community

lzheimer’s Association’s Brain Bus made its way to the Florida Keys this week to help local families whose loved ones are facing Alzheimer’s and other dementia. The bus is journeying throughout the island chain to help families navigate new diagnosis and access local resources.

Roughly 580,000 residents in Florida are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In Monroe County, more than 11% of adults over the age of 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Unique to Florida, the Brain Bus program travels the state providing dementia education and resources to underserved communities.

Those stopping by the bus are receiving everything from the 10 warning signs and symptoms to the MIND Diet, or Mediterranean Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. Developed by Rush University Medical Center, researchers say it can reduce the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Those following the diet strictly reduce the risk by 53%. Foods include green leafy vegetables, berries, olive oil, wine, beans, whole grains, poultry and fish.

“There are so many people battling Alzheimer’s and dementia right here in Florida, but many of them do not have easy access to educational programming or support,” said Rob Harris, Brain Bus driver and program manager for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Harris, who’s been with the Alzheimer’s Association for six years, said the Brain Bus allows people to stop by, sit inside a comfy RV and talk.

“I had one person whose mom moved here from Ohio, and they noticed signs,” he said.

The Alzheimer’s Association Brain Bus, in partnership with Monroe County Coalition, made its first visit in Key Largo on June 14. The bus then drove to two stops in the Southernmost City, at Frederick Douglass Gym on June 14 and Key West Housing Authority on June 15.

The bus will head to Bernstein Park, 6751, Fifth St., Stock Island on Thursday, June 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. and then to Marathon Community Park from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 18.

Program staff will be available to help families navigate a new diagnosis, access local resources and answer questions.

For questions, residents can call the Alzheimer's Association 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900. Alzheimer’s Association’s trained dementia specialists can offer support, information, referrals and care consultations. They’re also able to speak with constituents in more than 200 different languages.

That’s what this camp is all about. We will help kids in need experience the underwater world and achieve numerous milestones that may not be available to them. Kids will learn about coral conservation, shark awareness, marine debris clean-up techniques, etc. We will teach them how to fish our waters and certify them in scuba, if they are of age.

A MAN OF MANY HATS

E

dward R. Lowe was born circa 1882 and first arrived in the Florida Keys following the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. During the war, he served as a medic. He showed up in the Keys as a teenager, and his time on the islands was nothing short of colorful.

Though he studied law and medicine, he never earned a formal degree in either discipline. It did not stop him from becoming “Doc” Lowe. In 1910, during the construction of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad, he was placed in charge of the Marathon hospital erected to tend to railroad workers. He also served as the local coroner. 1910 was a busy year for Lowe, who, on Sept. 3, was commissioned as a justice of the peace, too.

Lowe did not always live in the Keys, and after his work with the railroad, he moved to the Miami area.

In 1915, he ran for chief of police and lost. When he moved back to the Keys, he settled in the Key Largo community of Tavernier, where he became a man who wore many hats. As an officer of the court, Lowe became acquainted with Robert Toombs Smith after meeting at a murder trial held in Jacksonville. The two became friends,

and over several summers during the mid-1920s, Doc Lowe and his family began vacationing with the Smiths at their family homestead.

During Prohibition, the Smith property served as a distribution portal for rum runners and bootleggers. A telegraph operator would alert Smith whenever a shipment of booze was coming in from Nassau. Shortly after that, rum runners would come up Mullet Creek, in the Indian River area where the 159-acre Smith homestead had been established, and unload their contraband.

In a taped interview conducted

by Ken Knudsen in 1990, Captain Bill Smith, the son of Lowe’s friend, said, “Sometimes there would be as many as 50 cars parked on our property waiting to get loaded up.” Smith said he saw over $1 million in cash move across the family’s kitchen table. According to Captain Bill, Doc Lowe enjoyed the Smith family’s corn whiskey.

Bill and his brother John became charter captains licensed by the Coast Guard in 1928. Later that year, Doc Lowe contacted the Smith boys to say he needed a couple of charter boat captains to work at his new Tavernier club. Doc Lowe, who operated a “professional and businessmen’s” club in Coral Gables, opened a secondary location in the Keys where he could entertain his members. When the Tavernier club opened, it was a twostory house on a piece of oceanfront property near the Leonard Lowe family – the two Lowes were unrelated.

Captain Bill went on to work for Doc Lowe until he left the Keys in 1930. Doc Lowe and his club continued to operate, as was detailed in the December 1931 issue of Motor Boat Magazine:

Tavernier when the Category 5 Labor Day Hurricane ripped the Florida Keys apart. One account of the storm published in The Miami News on September 4, 1935, described the Lowe family experience. “In one corner, huddled in stark fear were Mr. and Mrs. Doc Lowe, their son and daughter-in-law and the latter’s nine-month-old baby. They were too frightened to talk at first.

Doc was wounded in the head, maybe seriously. But they finally told us of the four of them taking turns holding the baby and clinging to a tree for four hours, before they were able to make their way to the Prevo bungalow.”

The Lowes remained in Tavernier after the storm, and, in 1937, Doc built a modern real-estate office, at which point he was wearing the hats of a real estate agent, justice of the peace and local historian. Lowe was elected president of the Florida Association of Justices and Constables in 1939. It would not be the last of his political aspirations, and he ran for state senator in 1946.

In one of his political advertisements, he said: “I have an unlimited and unsatisfied curiosity, always wanted to know what made the wheels turn and what caused them to click. As a result, I have attended each session of the Legislature for the past 14 years to study its mechanism or modus operandi as they would express it. I found that there were wheels and wheels within wheels, and that they all turned mighty. But more often than not, there was just a whir and not a click.”

Edward R. “Doc” Lowe suffered a stroke in 1951 and died at 70 years of age on June 10, 1952. He left behind his wife Ellie and son Claude. Doc Lowe was buried at Miami’s Woodlawn Cemetery.

STAYING FIT THE OLD FASHIONED WAY

troll down the aisles of any department store these days, and your eye will be drawn to an appealing collection of labor-saving gadgets. These can include everything from snow blowers and electric hedge trimmers to remote controls for the TV and DVD player.

It's enough to alarm every health and exercise expert in the land and for good reason. These labor-savers are associated with America's slide toward laziness. A large part of the American public isn't getting enough exercise. Medical problems like heart disease and high cholesterol are linked to a lack of exercise. They are a growing threat to public health. In addition, an inactive lifestyle increases the risk for overweight and obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer.

Modern conveniences Much of the decline in physical activity can be blamed on the modern conveniences that are rapidly replacing old-fashioned physical work. Our high-tech and increasingly inactive lifestyle is also to blame.

With no more leaves to rake or snow to shovel, people are finding it harder to fit physical activities into their schedule. But it's not that difficult. Consider this: You already have certain activities built into your daily schedule. You can build exercise in as well.

A manual approach Certainly modern devices can make life easier, but they also can rob you of needed exercise. Maybe it's time to dust off the old push lawn mower. When you watch TV, try changing the channels by hand. During commercials, use the farthest bathroom, especially if it's upstairs. Get in the habit of sweeping your sidewalk and scrubbing your floors.

Try new ways of doing things. Realize that for a 154-pound person, even 10 minutes of light gardening and leaf raking can knock off 50 to 60 calories. Even bursts of activity like this can improve blood pressure and blood sugar control, and also put off depression.

Declare war on labor-saving devices. Build in a certain kind of way of thinking, the kind that says, "I'm going to resist as many of these machines as possible."

Build your own low-tech exercise tools, inexpensively. For example, take a plastic, one-gallon milk jug and fill it with water.

It now weighs eight pounds. Now include that jug in a variety of stretching and pulling exercises that call for weights.

Look for ways to make your surroundings exercise-friendly.

When you're doing brisk physical chores, play loud, upbeat music.

Research shows that you'll work faster and burn more energy.

Try taking the stairs each day instead of the elevator, or park at the farthest corner of the parking lot.

NO-BAKE ENERGY BITES In need of a quick healthy snack to grab as a pick-me up? Check out these tasty bites made with common pantry staples. They’re easy to make, healthy and they just plain taste good.

Ingredients: 1 cup old-fashioned oats 2/3 cup toasted shredded coconut (sweetened or unsweetened) 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1/2 cup ground flaxseed 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips (or vegan chocolate chips) 1/3 cup honey 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Making the energy bites is too easy.

• Mix everything together in a large bowl until fully combined • Cover the mixing bowl and chill in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours or until the full mixture is cold.

UNITED BY WATER Florida Keys well-represented at UN World Oceans Day

T

he ocean matters.

Obviously, living here in the Florida Keys, we know this.

In fact, the importance of our local environment is one of the things that most everyone – regardless of political leanings and beliefs – knows to be true.

I didn’t have to go to New York City for World Oceans Day at the United Nations for someone to tell me this. Nevertheless, while that international celebration of all things blue did lend itself to some general declarations of the ocean’s importance, I was grateful and heartened to see some issues important to us here in the Florida Keys on the agenda and some familiar faces suggesting global solutions. I am happy to share those with you now.

The most obvious and critical discussions centered around coral, and how to help reefs survive warming oceans. According to NOAA, nearly all coral reefs around the world will be threatened by 2050. Local and global pressures, from overfishing to ocean acidification, are to blame.

This doesn’t bode well for us in the Keys, where our coral reef – the third largest barrier reef in the world – underpins our entire island economy. NOAA estimates that the coral reefs in southeast Florida have an asset value of $8.5 billion. They generate $4.4 billion in local sales, $2 billion in local income and 70,400 full- and part-time jobs.

Because we are a tourism-based economy, the United Way estimates that some 60% of our Keys residents depend on the marine environment for their livelihood.

Naturally, many tourists and visitors choose the Keys as their destination of choice to share in our 360-degree access to the ocean.

From fishing to boating, sunset sailing to scuba diving, there’s a little something for everyone on the rock. For locals, we also realize that our coral reef supports the hotels, restaurants, shops and other businesses that employ so many of us. We need a healthy reef and a sustainable ocean economy in order to keep the Keys going.

Therefore, when our oceans aren’t healthy, it’s also a problem.

There’s less coral and fewer fish. Less life underwater means fewer tourists coming to visit. Everything and everyone suffers.

At World Oceans Week at The Explorers Club, an unofficial, weeklong celebration that sandwiches the single-day event at the United Nations, I ran into David and DeeDee Vaughan, of Plant a Million

Corals. The former, a coral restoration legend and savant, spoke on a coral futures panel alongside Florida Aquarium, Kaust University from Saudi Arabia and the Global Fund for Coral Reefs. All speakers anchored their talks around the hope they still have for coral around the world, but Vaughan stunned the audience by describing his work in the Keys.

Finally, on the Thursday of World Oceans Week, I enjoyed learning more about blue carbon and the incredible mangrove. A 2018 study indicated that, pound for pound, mangroves can sequester four times as much carbon as terrestrial rainforests. That’s right – all those endangered, protected mangroves that line our coasts in the Keys are doing us a huge favor by storing excess carbon from the atmosphere into the soil beneath their roots. They also help strengthen our shorelines against storm surges, wave damage and sea-level rise. Global mangrove restoration efforts are becoming critical to keeping coastal communities like ours safe.

So there you have it: coral restoration, ocean technology and mangrove protection. Three leading ocean issues that we know well here in the Keys being discussed on the biggest blue stage in the world. I hopped on my flight back to Miami grateful for the international renown that science being conducted right here is receiving, and with a renewed commitment to our local environment. Together, the future will still be blue.

Local Organizes Harbor Clean Up

I

t all started when a previously sunken boat bobbed to the surface after the Keys’ recent brush with a tropical storm.

“The ocean was really churned up and I saw this dinghy come to the surface on a nearby grass flat, partially inflated,” said Ryan Newkirk of the vessel “Intrepid.” The liveaboard dragged it to shore and started cutting it up. It wasn’t long before he resolved to enlist a few buddies for a more extensive Boot Key Harbor cleanup. The city of Marathon manages the 226-ball mooring field and the city marina in the harbor, as well as offering services to others at anchor nearby.

Newkirk divided the harbor and nearby canals into zones and assigned groups to each – shallow vessels to the mangrove shorelines and bigger boats to assist in canal cleanup. In all, about 80 volunteers showed up on June 11 and 12 and collected more than a ton of debris. The City of Marathon Public Works Department provided trash bags, a dump truck, skid steer and employees to truck away the debris.

Eric Ramsey, a liveaboard in the harbor, used his paddleboard to scour the mangroves.

“I found a really long wooden paddle, the kind people would use for décor now,” he said. “But my favorite part of the cleanup was getting the lobster trap off the middle of a grass flat just east of the Boot Key Harbor Bridge. I’ve been staring at it, and it has been bugging me for more than a year.”

Ramsey said a Burdine’s Waterfront Bar and Grill employee called across the channel as he was pulling plastic garbage out of the mangroves.

“He shouted, ‘Thank you, thank you,’” Ramsey remembered. “It just looked bad. And now it looks better.”

Newkirk is a serial cruiser, retired now eight years after a career in the automotive industry. He said he was amazed by the support from volunteers, the City of Marathon’s Marina and Public Works departments and the community. He collected about $1,200 in giveaway prizes for volunteers from local businesses such as the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters, Burdine’s Waterfront Bar and Grill, the Stuffed Pig, the Turtle Hospital, Marathon Pontoon Rentals, Florida Keys Steak & Lobster, Porky’s Bayside Restaurant, Dockside and Overseas Pub and Grill.

Golfer Greg Norman is a top executive of LIV. But there’s a problem. LIV’s money comes from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. In other words, oil money, which to some people is dirty money; not to mention Saudi Arabia’s track record of human rights violations, including its alleged involvement in the murder and dismemberment of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi four years ago in Turkey.

The PGA suspended Mickelson and 16 other golfers who qualified for LIV’s first tournament, which was held in London last week. Later, Bryan DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Ian Poulter and Pat Perez also dropped out of the PGA to play in the LIV. Other LIV golfers include Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Talor Gooch and Louis Oosthuizen. The PGA has warned other golfers they, too, will not be eligible to play in PGA Tour events if they play in the LIV Series.

Johnson told reporters in London that he had signed a four-year inducement deal with LIV for a reported $150 million.

CHARL SCHWARTZEL, a former Masters Tournament winner, won the LIV’s first 54-hole event among 47 participants and took home $4 million plus $750,000 for his share of the team competition. (Unlike PGA Tour events, which include four rounds of golf, LIV events are only three rounds, or 54 holes. Hence the name LIV, which is 54 in Roman numerals.)

Mickelson and Kevin Na tied for 33rd place, winning $150,000 each, which is in addition to inducement fees they accepted to join the LIV. Garcia tied for 22nd and won $172,000. In last place, Itthipat Buranatanyarat took home $122,000.

The first LIV tournament was televised on YouTubeTV, and initial coverage in the U.S. could be limited to streaming services and social platforms.

LIV didn’t make the ESPN highlights its first few days, and that network could determine LIV’s acceptance, at least in this country.

Why shouldn’t there be a second major golf league? I’m for it. Some golfers, Mickelson included, have voiced gripes against the PGA. So, perhaps it isn’t perfect. Other sports have two or more divisions. There used to be two pro football leagues, although alternative pro- football leagues have not survived. And there will still be plenty of “big-name” golfers left for the PGA. TAKING PART IN LAST WEEK’S Canadian Open tournament, opposite the first LIV event, were Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Justin Rose, Sam Burns, Cameron Smith and Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy and Thomas were tied at the 17th hole on the final day, but McIlroy birdied, while Thomas bogied.

That clinched it for McIlroy’s repeat as the Canadian champ. Finau kicked up into second place when Thomas bogied 18 as well.

The U.S Open is this week at Brookline, Massachusetts. It’s not run by the PGA and is allowing LIV golfers to play.

The other majors are independent as well.

Several TV announcers have taken a strong position against the LIV golfers.

Mark Rolfing, a prominent voice on the Golf Channel, said his “sadness was turning to anger,” when the jumping golfers were announced.

The money is too much to resist.

I read that Tiger Woods turned down an offer of $1 billion to go LIV, whose second tournament is June 30 through July 2 in Portland, Oregon.

AS I SAID, I accept the idea of a second golf league. It’s an awful lot of money, at least to me. I’ve never had close to what I accept as a lot of money.

If someone gave me $4 million all at once, what would I do with it?

The first thing I’d do is buy a new car, as the one I have is several years old. Truth be told, I’d probably buy an expensive, sporty car. I’d buy a house, and we know that in Key West we’re talking more than $1 million. I’d hire a housekeeper, probably to live in and cook three meals a day. New clothes.

Incidentals. Money gifts for my six children. Same for my church and some other charities.

Wait, I’ve still got plenty left. And, if I’m one of those golfers, there’s another tournament next week. Can my bank handle this much money?

Prognosis still unclear for struggling sea cow Dolphin Research Center’s Manatee Rescue Team (DRC), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters, assisted by local residents, rescued an emaciated manatee on June 10 at Duck Key. The residents had earlier spotted the manatee and reported its condition to FWC, which asked DRC to respond. After finding the animal in a canal, the rescue team surrounded it with a long net and pulled it up concrete dock steps to land.

The male manatee was approximately 8 feet long and so underweight that its rib cage was clearly visible below its skin. The rescuers first transferred the animal to a stretcher and then carried it to a FWC transport truck. FWC personnel then drove the manatee to SeaWorld in Orlando for further assessment and treatment. Its prognosis is unknown.

For those of you who follow us on social media, you may have seen that mom got a new dresser in our (her) room.

Coral and I have used this new treasure to make an obstacle course. We jump from the bed to the floor to the short dresser and then to the tall dresser. Sometimes we jump from the desk REEF down to our big round bed like little fluffy misTHE FOX siles. Mom said it’s “parkour,” whatever that means, but boy oh boy, it sure is fun.

We have some fun happenings this week in the Keys. First on deck is Thursday, June 16, in Islamorada. The Morada Way Art Walk is from 6 to 9 p.m. Enjoy a relaxing evening perusing local fine art, imbibing local craft beer and wine, listening to music and seeing your favorite people.

On Friday, June 17, Mangroves Matter Kayak Tour at Curry Hammock State Park takes place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Go explore their mangrove tunnel with an optional sandbar stop.

This free, guided experience should not be missed when passing through the middle Keys.

THE LOVE OF MY LIFE

By Rosie Walsh Emma loves her husband Leo more than anything. They have a beautiful daughter and have spent the past decade building a lovely home. Emma has recently gone into remission, and the couple are often reminded of their deep connection and gratitude for her current health. Leo is an obituary writer for the city’s newspaper and Emma is a well-known marine biologist and spokeswoman on BBC. Leo can’t seem to resist his nature of soothing his own fears by writing a column for Emma, hopefully not to be published for many years to come.

As he quietly digs deeper into her past, Leo finds pieces of a puzzle that do not fit together. It doesn’t take long before his anxiety has him exposing horrifying emails and text messages. He begins to doubt if he knows his wife at all. When a well-known actress goes missing, Emma mysteriously has a secret relationship with the woman’s husband, an outspoken and rather brash radio host named Jeremy. The more Emma tries to explain each finding, the more twisted her lies become. A mysterious love story that makes even the most mundane details appear sinister.

IN AGREEMENT WITH SHERIFF To the Editor: This letter is in reply to the June 9 letter from Sheriff Ramsay to your esteemed newspaper. I am proud to have known Rick Ramsay for the greatest part of his life. One of the earliest conversations we shared was when he was a teenaged cadet in full, spiffy uniform – I often think that he had police insignias on his diapers when he was a baby – and he came by to chat on a site where I was building a home.

He noticed that I was alone and asked where my crew was, and I told him that there was a fire in town and every man in my crew was a volunteer fireman. He was a bit wowed and said I should be entitled to at least one “get out of jail free” card. He was joking, of course, for I know he would slam me just like he would anyone else if it was called for. Please, Rick, make this job your permanent profession, stay with us here in the Keys, and don’t let some big city or county steal you away!

The sheriff’s letter regarding the school shooting in Uvalde was spot on as far as it went, but I would like to add that I can’t think of anyone other than the police or military who should be armed with assault weapons. It makes me sick to think of the possibility of a wonderful man like our sheriff or any of his deputies having to rush in and disable some deranged person filling the air with bullets.

My father was a hunter of pheasants, I was a hunter of fish with my hands or spear guns, and now I shoot and kill those @#$%^& iguanas, and I am proud to say that both of my sons are game hunters – my wife and I occasionally enjoy the bounties of our son Erik’s hunting skills on our dinner table.

Yes, of course guns can be tools of good use. But weapons of mass destruction should be outlawed except for use by a very, very small part of our population for whom the need is clearly proven. Please, folks, make sure our elected leaders know how you feel and vote accordingly.

MORE CLASSIC ROCK READS Getting stories down on paper (or screens)

A

few weeks ago, we checked out books by Don Felder and Eric Clapton. This week’s Rock Reads are a conversation with a Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer and the autobiography of someone who has played with a lot of them.

“Conversations with Tom Petty” by Paul Zollo is a very interesting look at the first 30 years of the Heartbreakers, plus Petty’s early life in Gainesville, Florida. The book is actually a verbatim transcript of numerous interviews with Petty and is hard to put down once started.

Born to a loving mother and a somewhat abusive father, Petty grew up knowing he was meant for music after two key events in his life: meeting Elvis while he was filming location shoots for one of his movies, and seeing the Beatles on the “Ed Sullivan Show.”

Petty got his first lesson from fellow Gainesville native Don Felder (the Eagles) and formed a few bands, the most successful of which was Mudcrutch. That band, which comprised three out of the five original Heartbreakers, was Petty’s ticket to Los Angeles and a recording contract.

“Conversations” goes on to chronicle the demise of Mudcrutch, the formation of the Heartbreakers, early successes and the first taste of stardom, hitting the road with Bob Dylan, lineup changes in the bassist and drummer positions, Petty’s solo records, the unbridled joy of the Traveling Wilburys, the sadness of losing Roy Orbison and Howie Epstein, and persevering through both musical and personal turmoil to keep a great band together. There are stories of tensions within and outside of the band, of famous friends who wander in and out of the Heartbreakers’ sphere, and of finding family contentment at last.

Zollo also takes Petty through an album-by-album retrospective of his recorded works. Individual songs are dissected, including what inspired the song, how it was recorded, which musicians played on it, and why it mattered to Tom and his compatriots.

For Petty fans, the book is a must-read; for those who want the insider’s perspective on the inner workings of a great rock band, the same applies. For all he has accomplished, Petty comes across as a downto-earth real human being who got lucky in a lot of ways.

Another musician who will readily admit he got lucky is Joe Vitale. This Ohioan – and talented drummer, keyboardist and flutist – found his niche in recording and performing with all sorts of music legends.

His book, “Joe Vitale: Backstage Pass (as told to Susie Vitale)” isn’t the tell-all book it could have been. It is, however, a fun read of the good times of one man’s incredible musical journey.

Here’s a quick roster check of the talent that Joe Vitale performed and/ or recorded with: Crosby Stills & Nash (and Young, too), Joe Walsh, the Eagles, Dan Fogelberg, Peter Frampton, Ted Nugent and more. He co-wrote JOHN “Rocky Mountain Way” BARTUS with Joe Walsh (as well as playing the drums and piis the Mayor of ano on the recording). He the City of Marahas produced Crosby Stills thon. He also is & Nash. He played stadia musician who performs around ums with Peter Frampton town. For more during the “Frampton see johnbartus.

Comes Alive” heyday. He com was the first ever “utility musician” to tour with the Eagles. And he helped trash more than a few hotel rooms during the rock and roll excess of the 1970s.

Vitale has nothing bad to say about anyone. His reminiscences are all about the good times, camaraderie and the joy of music. There are quite a few stories about his role in writing and recording some very classic tracks, including the Eagles’ “Pretty Maids All In A Row,” CSN’s “Just a Song Before I Go,” “Southern Cross,” and “Wasted on the Way,” plus tracks on just about every Joe Walsh album.

In fact, one of Walsh’s biggest hits has a Florida Keys connection: Joe and the band (along with producer Bill Szymczyk) decided to record demos for the album “But Seriously, Folks” on a boat. They made the old Plantation Yacht Harbor (now Islamorada’s Founders Park) their home base, and quickly became known to the locals as “the boat weirdos.” While recording on the water, Joe and the boys came up with the song fragments that became “Life’s Been Good.”

The fun parts of the book are stories of how these crazy musicians entertained themselves through pranks and practical jokes while on tour. Highlights include: a) the drenching of an elevator rider with trash cans full of water, and then finding out that the elevator occupant wasn’t one of their bandmates but a cop instead, and b) how the Doobie Brothers and Joe Walsh’s band actually traded places on stage during the talkbox guitar solo of “Rocky Mountain Way,” and Walsh’s stunned reaction to be still playing the song and seeing his band watching him from the front row.

While you won’t get the dirt, the stories – and hundreds of photos – you do get are well worth the price of admission.

The Beatles struck a blow for civil rights, insisting that the Jacksonville Gator Bowl be desegregated for the first time. Florida resisted, but the Beatles won.
