KEY WEST OFFICIALS TALK FANTASY FEST 3-YEAR AGREEMENT IS ON JUNE 21 AGENDA MANDY MILES

antasy Fest will continue under the direction of its founders and current producers, the Key West Tourist Development Association, for the next three years, if officials approve a new agreement on Tuesday, June 21.

The upcoming city commission agenda includes a proposed threeyear agreement with the TDA (not to be confused with the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, or TDC, a division of county government that markets the Florida Keys as a tourism destination).

The agreement outlines specific events to be included in the Fantasy Fest celebration, along with the requirements for police officers, insurance coverage, trash receptacles, portable restrooms and other necessities. It states that a Masquerade March will take place Friday evening, the night before the parade, and the parade will take place on Saturday night. A street fair will not be part of the week-long event in 2022.

Other than insurance requirements and payment for city services, the agreement does not specify any changes to the festival, which were discussed at length during a December 2021 Leadership Retreat, where city officials decided they want to “transform the event into a positive, clean festival enjoyed by both residents and visitors.”

The changes proposed in December 2021 included: No nudity, no Fantasy Zone, fines for inappropriate body-painting and designated “family hours” during which inappropriate costumes are prohibited. The 2021

discussion also called for “more widespread economic benefits to businesses islandwide” and an increased focus on “culture, history and natural resources of Key West.”

In April 2022, commissioners directed City Manager Patti McLauchlin to negotiate a new contract with the Tourist Development Association, which produces Fantasy Fest.

That new, three-year agreement will be discussed at Tuesday’s commission meeting.

“There will be some changes to Fantasy Fest and we’re amenable to that,” festival director Nadene Grossman Orr told the Keys Weekly in April 2022. “There will definitely be a parade and a Masquerade March. Canceling the street fair on Duval Street is under consideration, but has not been officially voted on yet by the TDA board.”

The new agreement does not mention a street fair, which was canceled last year due to COVID concerns. Many Duval Street business owners said they appreciated its absence, as it tends to keep people off the sidewalks and out of their

businesses while they peruse the vendor booths in the street.

As for nudity, Grossman said in April, “Nudity is illegal. We always emphasize creative costuming. As usual, it boils down to enforcement.”

She added, “there’s an unusual perception out there” that the TDA markets Fantasy Fest as a nuditywelcome event to people who participate in such events elsewhere.

“There is zero marketing to target that market,” Grossman Orr said in April. “All of our materials emphasize Fantasy Fest as a creative, costumed event. We market to next-generation festival goers, and to like-minded, affluent people who like music, art and costuming events.”

She said what the event really needs to bring about the desired transformation is participation.

“We challenge the city and the county and any individuals, businesses and government agencies with the means and the space to build floats and participate in the parade,” she said two months ago.

The race for Key West’s District 4 city commission seat ramped up this week as the deadline to qualify for the ballot approaches at noon on Friday, June 17. Candidates who have completed all paperwork and submitted the required number of signed petitions or $1,200 filing fee by the deadline will be listed on the official ballot.

Current District 4 commissioner Greg Davila faced no challengers as of Saturday, June 11.

On Sunday, June 12, Keys native and local business owner Steven Nekhaila had thrown his hat in the ring and had qualified to run.

The next day, on Monday, June 13, Davila withdrew from the race to spend more time with his family. His withdrawal then prompted a flurry of activity that kept local politicos tuned in to the Supervisor of Elections website all week.

On Wednesday, June 15, Kim Highsmith had qualified for the District 4 race in addition to Nekhaila.

worker Lissette Cuervo Carey had pre-filed as a candidate, but had not qualified as of presstime on June 15. The same was true for Ryan Barwick, whose Facebook page says he is a bartender at Rick’s/Durty Harry’s on Duval Street. Barwick also had not qualified as of presstime Wednesday.

The final ballot names will be determined after the noon Friday qualifying deadline.

In other city races, incumbent Mayor Teri Johnston has already raised more than $56,000 from supporters while challenger Margaret Romero recently launched her fundraising and campaign efforts.

In District 2, Commissioner Sam Kaufman was still unopposed as of presstime June 15, but a candidate still could qualify before noon on Friday. The same was true in District 5, where Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover faced no challengers as of Wednesday afternoon.

After qualifying ends, the nonprofit Hometown Key West group will host a Meet the Candidates event at 5 p.m. Friday, June 17 at Tennessee Williams Theater at the College of the Florida Keys.

All candidates and voters are welcome.

efore members of the Monroe County School Board heard an update on the new Key West High School football stadium, they heard an earful from a few Cudjoe Key residents representing a conservative group known as Moms for Liberty and Lower Keys Conservatives.

The meeting took place June 14 at Key West’s City Hall, where Cudjoe Key resident Gina Bosic questioned the presence of a rainbow flag and a Ukrainian flag.

“We say the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and here there’s a rainbow flag,” she said with disgust. “And there’s a Ukrainian flag out front. I’ve done some research into, not what the mainstream media tells you, but what’s really going on in Ukraine.”

Bosic then lambasted the school board for a book she saw in a public county library about “gender queer. It’s disgusting. I’m disgusted that it would even be tolerated. How would that even get into the public system?” Bosic said.

Superintendent Theresa Axford, along with board chair John Dick and Mindy Conn, emphasized to the Keys Weekly following the meeting that the Bosic mentioned is in a public county library, not a school library.

In other news, construction of Key West High School’s new Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium is on track to begin in May 2023, after next year’s baseball season. The upcoming football season will be played at The Backyard at the high school on Flagler Avenue.

Pat Lefere, the school district’s director of operations and planning, told the board that the cost estimate for phase 1 of the new stadium stands at $16.4 million, an increase from the $15 million that was originally budgeted.

Key West. The baseball side of the complex at Rex Weech Field will get a new press box and refurbished bleachers and a new but temporary concession stand, Lefere said.

Board member Mindy Conn reminded the board of prior concerns about the new football bleachers encroaching on and shortening the baseball outfield.

Lefere said the bleacher design had changed so the baseball outfield will be the same as it is now, within a few feet, and the football bleachers will retain their current capacity of 3,000 seats.

Phase 1 of the project is slated to be mostly complete by January 2024, Lefere said.

Also, the board voted to move ahead on housing at the district’s Trumbo Road headquarters by seeking housing proposals from potential developers based on an unsolicited proposal received from the developer of the neighboring, luxury Steam Plant condominiums. That company had proposed about 75 homes and a new administration building. But the school board has indicated it wants more housing and no administration building on that site. The Steam Plant development group also can amend its initial proposal to reflect the board’s desires and resubmit a proposal.

his will be the last year that AH Monroe coordinates, and benefits from, the Royal Campaign for King & Queen of Fantasy Fest. Following this year’s coronation in October, the nonprofit will hand the reins to the producers of Fantasy Fest to decide how best to proceed and which local charities might benefit from the annual fundraising effort.

In the wake of last week’s announcement, Scott Pridgen, executive director of AH Monroe, took to his keyboard to more fully explain the decision and what it means: “After my announcement, I’ve had questions asked of me. None have been negative; several have indicated hearty approval and offered congratulations at both our agency’s financial health and our willingness to ‘share’ a well-known fundraiser with others. So let’s recap what you might have missed: “Our board made the decision that this year, 2022, would be the agency’s final Royal Campaign of Fantasy Fest as beneficiary.

This is NOT the end of the Royal Campaign as a community fundraiser. It also has nothing to do with the Fantasy Fest celebration.

It continues.”

Why did this announcement come out of nowhere? The official news may have been unexpected, but this has been under discussion for two years, when the first wave of COVID quarantines enveloped the country. Our financial projections demonstrated that the agency was asserting self-sustainability. Another worthy organization should reap the many rewards of this fundraiser. We also strongly felt the most transparent exit strategy was to announce this far ahead of the actual campaign or the Coronation festivities, so the community and candidates can savor this “finale.”

Who will hold The Royal Campaign in 2023? We have no idea. Returning it to the Tourist Development Association (TDA), which produces Fantasy Fest, concludes our stewardship. The direction they choose is up to their board.

Does the agency not need donations anymore? Of course we do. We also continue to apply for any relevant grants and remain in close contact with philanthropists like The Sherman Trust. Donations of goods, resources, money and time are always welcome. We are simply eliminating one infrastructure layer of seasonal fundraising. The SMART Ride – an external fundraiser in which this agency participates – will continue. So will Taste of Key West. Other pop-up fundraisers or attractions to benefit us may occur, and we welcome them. The Royal Campaign of Fantasy Fest was always “on loan” to us.

Why hold this year’s Royal Campaign at all? And just let it fade away? That was non-negotiable. This is about closure. This is about gratitude. We take the Royal legacy very seriously. What this community has given us is beyond measure and we want our rock star candidates and everyone who came before to leave the stage in style, basking in the warm glow of Coronations past. That’s why the theme is “Thanks for the Memories!”

So anyone keen on becoming the last roster of candidates to benefit AH should toss in their hat. If last year’s line-up comes back into play — and we are hearing that it will — we will have a bumper crop of fascinating, energetic candidates for the public to meet on Friday, Aug. 26 at The Royal Kickoff. Our two information sessions are June 23 and July 28, both Thursdays. Both are casual get-togethers that tell you what being an eight-week AH ambassador can mean.

Think of it as the closing ceremony of the Olympics or the final episode of “Friends.”

Our gratitude stretches since 1989 across decades of Royal fundraising – an astonishing $5.1 million raised toward our mission of Health + Housing. Everyone likes a goofy anecdote, to share a good cry and a standing ovation at Truman Waterfront. I know I’m looking forward to that celebration.

onroe County residents can now obtain a paper title at any tax collector offices in the Florida Keys, thanks to the recent installation of specialized title-printing equipment, Monroe County Tax Collector Sam C. Steele announced recently.

Previously, residents could only obtain a printed title at the Key West main office or Plantation Key branch office locations.

“Adding these printers at every office makes it easy and convenient for residents to come in and get a printed title, or what we also commonly refer to as a ‘fast title,’” said Steele. “This is especially significant for Marathon area residents who previously had to drive two hours round trip for this service with hopes they would not have to make a return trip due to not having the proper documents at the time.”

The new title printers are the latest in a series of enhancements implemented by Steele. In late 2021, an online virtual assistant was added to MonroeTaxCollector.com to help customers get answers to commonly asked questions and conduct business with the office 24/7. Additionally, a new appointment system was added in early 2022, giving residents the ability to schedule, change and cancel appointments for several tax collector services.

1. 2014 marked the very first Bubba Awards, presented in the un-renovated Key West Theater that Tap Johnson had recently purchased and generously donated to the cause.

The Bubbas became the first official event held at the theater. And while Rams Head has carried the theater to unimaginable heights, they continue to extend that generosity today, as the theater remains home to the Bubbas for eight of the nine years.

GAS PRICES FUEL CONCERNS LOCAL CAPTAINS AND TOURISM EXPERTS WEIGH IN

R

emember when 20 bucks could fill your little car’s tank more than halfway? Remember when 10 bucks could get you from Key West to Marathon, at least?

Those days are long gone, and economic experts don’t know when the pain at the pump will subside.

In the Florida Keys island chain, summer tourism depends on the drive-down market of people vacationing from elsewhere in Florida, as well as Georgia and the Carolinas.

But their travel costs have skyrocketed, with Florida’s average gas prices hovering around $5 a gallon.

The spikes are also a huge concern for local boaters, charter captains, dive boats and watersports companies.

“As the pain threshold of $5/gallon as the national average for gas has just been reached, there is likely to be some impact; we are just not sure where it will be felt or how deep,” said Stacey Mitchell, director of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. “I’m confident the summer tourism season will remain steady, but I believe consumer price point behaviors have already begun to change. They still want to travel and are still planning summer vacations, but they’re having to make adjustments to spending habits.”

Mitchell pointed out that in prior economic “headwinds,” vacation rentals and other properties with cooking capabilities “provided intrinsic value, as meals could be prepared; the guest could stock their own bar, and folks bringing down their own boats could go snorkeling or fishing without hiring a private captain.”

“While still popular for the summer visitor, this year those gas and marine fuel costs as well as grocery bills have leveled the savings playing field,” Mitchell said. “In addition, if you’re a mom on vacation, going to Publix to buy groceries, unloading them and then preparing meals in a rental unit doesn’t quite feel like a real vacation — at least it wouldn’t for me.”

She said fuel costs and lodging rates could prompt some visitors to shorten their stays, curtail some attractions and watersport activities and eat at less expensive restaurants.

“As we look forward toward the Independence Day holiday and the busiest month for summer vacations (July), the TDC office will be closely monitoring consumer behaviors to determine what impact the current economic situation is having on our local economy,” Mitchell said.

Meanwhile, at the dock Captain Bill Giliberti is the owner of Marathon-based Top Notch Sportfishing. Though he says he increased the price of his charters in early 2022 to cover rising costs of fuel, bait and tackle, among other expenses, and says that most of his clients have understood, he wonders how far the increases can go before his clientele dries out.

“I increased my price, and my profit margins didn’t go up,” he said. “The thing is, where is the realistic breaking point where someone’s going to say ‘No, I’m not going to go charter fishing out of principle because I’m not going to pay that much money’?”

Though he’s in business to make a living for himself, Giliberti is conscious of the fact that most of his clients don’t understand his industry and may be visiting the Keys for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation – something he doesn’t want to derail with fuel bills for a boat trip.

In his mind, charters have a responsibility to inform their clients as soon as they decide to raise prices to allow for potential changes in vacation plans. And on his boat, if a client books a charter and he raises his prices between the booking and the scheduled trip, he only has one option: “I eat it.”

“If I give someone a price for something, that’s what it is,” he said. “I come from a middle-class family. We save up all year to go on a one-week vacation. If a family budgets their vacation to come down here, that extra $200 could be the breaking point to where they’re like, ‘No, we can’t afford to go.’”

With multiple boats in his High Caliber Sportfishing armada, Marathon Capt. Jimmy Gagliardini said each boat feels the pinch of the fuel hikes differently based on its engine configuration. He, like others, has recently raised his charter prices across the board to cover a portion of his rising expenses, but he’s also wary of a tolerance threshold for his potential customers.

“I’m fishing a half-day right now for $900,” he said. “Am I supposed to raise that price? At what point will people say no? I feel like I’m at that point now where it’s sticker shock.”

When it comes to fuel surcharges, Gagliardini said his increases don’t pass all of the extra expenses on to the customer.

“Going up $100 to go offshore dolphin fishing on a 31-foot Contender really doesn’t cover all the fuel,” he said. “Basically, I’m almost splitting it with them. So far, 100% have understood. I’m just trying to keep it somewhat reasonable to where I’m not overwhelming the customer with the cost and I can still make money.

“We’re doing the best we can just to weather it out. It’ll eventually go back down, but I don’t know when that will be.”

COUNTY SEEKS FEDERAL FUNDS FOR PROJECTS MONEY SOUGHT FOR CARD SOUND BRIDGE AND COASTAL STORM RISK STUDY JIM McCARTHY jim@keysweekly.com

M

onroe County commissioners unanimously approved a list of federal legislative priorities, which include U.S. 1 revetments and shoreline stabilization and Card Sound Bridge replacement planning, during a June 15 meeting at the Murray Nelson Government Center in Key Largo.

Keeping flood insurance premiums affordable, federal disaster-related funding and coral reef protection are among the other priorities the county hopes senators and representatives in Washington, D.C., will support.

An approved and signed 2022 federal budget included some $5.4 million the county requested to help fund a flood mitigation project for the Twin Lakes community in Key Largo. A flood-prone community, the project includes road elevation and new drainage, as well as stormwater collection.

Greg Burns, federal lobbyist for Thorn Run Partners who represents Monroe County, said it was the first time in a decade that Congress considered such requests.

U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez made the request on behalf of Monroe County.

“The congressman really did deliver for you,” Burns said. “We worked with your (county) team to identify Twin Lakes as something we felt was competitive for funding.”

Now, county officials are hoping Congress will be willing to grant more requests as it begins work on a 2023 budget. The county’s new appropriation requests to Congress include $1.8 million for planning, design and engineering for a Card Sound Bridge replacement project. It’s one of 26 bridges that Monroe County maintains, and one of two evacuation routes from the Florida Keys to the mainland.

Constructed in 1969, Card Sound Bridge is scheduled for replacement to ensure the continued safety of the route. Monroe County is requesting funding for 80% of the estimated cost for the planning, design and engineering phase of the project. The remaining 20% of the estimated cost will be funded locally.

County officials are also hoping to secure $1,040,000 in federal funds for planning, engineering and design for U.S. 1 revetments and shoreline stabilization portion of the Monroe County Coastal Storm Risk Management Project. For the past few years, the county has partnered with the Army Corps

of Engineers on a feasibility study, using previously approved hurricane supplemental funding from Congress, to propose storm damage mitigation strategies.

The planning, engineering and design phase cost is shared, 65% from federal funds and 35% non-federal money. The county is working with the Florida Department of Transportation, the owner of U.S. 1, to assist with the non-federal costs.

“We’re excited to put these forward,” Burns said, adding that Gimenez made the two requests on behalf of the county. “We don’t know if either are funded yet. Congress is just beginning the work.”

In addition to supporting a federal legislative agenda, the board of county commissioners approved an agreement totalling $80,000 with Thorn Run Partners for federal lobbying services on behalf of Monroe County. The terms of the agreement end May 31, 2023.

Other county priorities include making changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) by limiting annual rate increases to no more than 9% per year for policyholders. Right now, those rates could increase 18% per year, Burns said. Congress will need to reauthorize the program, which expires Sept. 30.

“Many people see NFIP as being completely broken,” Burns said, adding that President Biden’s administration recently released a proposal that would change the program. “This is not a partisan issue. It tends to be dependent upon how significant flooding can be in your community.”

Coral restoration is another federal legislative priority for Monroe County. Burns said the federal government has invested around $30 million annually over the past 20 years, but the health of coral is still declining.

Burns said he’s working to help pass Sen. Marco Rubio’s Restoring Resilient Reefs Act, which would propose more investment for restoration and more funds for emergency coral restoration.

“The status quo hasn’t worked over the past 20 yeras,” Burns said. “It just hasn’t worked. Congress has the opportunity to help and save what we have left. This is the best chance right now to get this bill passed.”

Burns added that the entire Florida delegation supports this bill.

In other matters, the BOCC received the final technical results of a roads study. A presentation showed a final estimate of $1.6 billion to adjust roughly 311 miles of road in unincorporated Monroe County that are vulnerable to sea level rise by 2045.

“When looking at potential adaptations to the county’s road infrastructure, this process determined which roads are vulnerable by 2045, how high they need to be elevated, and when they need to be elevated,” said Monroe County Chief Resilience Officer Rhonda Haag.

A variety of funding sources, such as grants and infrastructure sales tax initiatives, will be needed to pay for the projects. Monroe County officials say they are researching options for funding sources for these largescale resilience projects, including the state’s “Resilient Florida” program.

The county is about to move forward with the construction of the pilot road elevation projects in the Twin Lakes subdivision in Key Largo and Sands subdivision in Big Pine Key using grant funding. Stillwright Point in Key Largo will begin its design phase under a state grant.

IRRATIONAL RESPONSES TO IRIDESCENCE

I

t was the iridescence that gave the bird away, the dusky gleam that made it look black but also, at the same time, a shifting palette of burgundy, MARK purple and green.

The birds I was seeing were, to my mind, in one of the more ideal situations for them – the fenced-off grass at the base of the FAA tower near Higgs Beach, which is generally free from human or canine interruption. And it had rained a day or two before, so the whole area was flooded like a private, little, grassy swamp.

Ibises feed by shoving those long, curving bills down into the ground, hunting for crustaceans, grubs, worms and other subterranean invertebrates. They have bundles of nerves in the tips of their bills to help them feel prey in places they cannot see. With the ground as waterlogged as it was, it no doubt made all that poking and probing easier, and there seemed to be something of a frenzied and buoyant mood in the flock.

At first I wasn’t sure about the iridescence. The bird was far back, on its own and away from the flock. It seemed like a wide open habitat, but the grass must have been higher than it looked because the bird kept appearing then disappearing behind the bigger clumps. It was possible it was just an immature white ibis in weird light and I’d given the impressionistic, seat-of-the-pants part of my brain a little too much rein.

I tried to get a decent shot of the bird with my camera, but between the chain link fence and all the rogue stalks of grass everywhere, the autofocus was hunting and seeking in all the wrong places. It wasn’t the iridescence I was trying to capture.

Like a black light poster, that stuff never conveys to a camera the way it does to a human eye. I was trying to get a shot of the bird’s belly to make sure there wasn’t any white in there, to confirm my suspicions.

Finally I gave up and went old school, and just followed the bird with my binoculars. And after some intense staring it turned out the impressionistic, seat-of-the-pants part of my brain was right – there was a low-key, multi-hued gleam to the feathers, making it a glossy ibis.

Birds’ plumages get their colors in two different ways, from pigments in the feathers – either genetically encoded or acquired through diet – or from structures in the feathers that refract light.

Glossy Ibis get their colors both ways. The blacks and dark browns of their plumage come from pigments, but the green/ purple/burgundy soap bubble-like sheen comes from structural elements in their feathers that deflect different parts of the light spectrum. It’s best seen in real life, but an impressionistic bird painter, like David Sibley, does a far better job conveying what the human eye sees than a photo.

Glossy ibises are not the rarest bird in the world. They might be the most common and cosmopolitan of all the ibises, seen regularly on every continent but Antarctica. But this was not always the case.

The first glossy ibis recorded in North America was seen in 1817. John James Audubon included a painting of one in his Birds of America, but he only saw a single living glossy ibis in his lifetime.

By the 1950s, though, they were considered somewhat common, the bulk of them living in Florida, with notable colonies upstate in places like Lake Okeechobee and the St. Johns River. And their territories have spread outside of Florida as far north as New Brunswick, Canada, and as far west as Louisiana. (Nothing I have ever read has posited that they got to the Americas by anything other than a natural range expansion, despite the suspicious circumstances of them showing up in a post-colonial era.)

Glossy ibis are not what you would call rare in the Keys, but they are uncommon and irregular. Standing outside the chainlink by the tower I couldn’t remember the last time I had seen one in the Keys. It had been a few years. I tried to remember the last time I had seen one up in the Everglades, and couldn’t come up with a distinct memory from there, either.

I followed the bird for a long time, sporadically taking shots.

Twenty frames. A hundred frames. I watched it move toward all the white ibises and then mix in on their crustacean crunching scrum, and shot a few hundred more frames. Most of them were going to be garbage shots and I wondered why I felt so compelled to keep shooting.

I think I just really missed seeing the strange things those feathers could do to light. And until then I didn’t even know I missed it.

Fifty years from now, Americans will look back at the social significance of this film, which remains a classic to this day. But it is also a movie about a father’s tough love for a son he is trying to save from the brutal environment of gang warfare and the hate bred from social injustice. And we can’t imagine anyone playing the part other than Laurence Fishburne.

9. Ben — “Captain Fantastic” (2016).

This film is one of the greatest movie snubs in Oscar history, but it remains one of the greatest tales about a father’s unconditional devotion to his children — regardless of his unconventional methods. In an era of tablets, cellphones and family disconnects, this movie challenges contemporary norms about our ability to enrich and empower our children with the tools that matter. Ben is played by Viggo Mortenson, who is the only actor to land twice on our Hollywood dad list (see #7).

8. Bryan Mills — “Taken” (2008). Why? Because if your father has a “particular set of skills,” the bad guys should probably leave you alone. Today, Liam Neeson continues to pump out action movies based on his Taken franchise fame, but one thing is for sure, the guy would stop at nothing to save his daughter.

5. Marlin — “Finding Nemo” (2003).

The greatest dilemma for any father is the balance between being overprotective and allowing your children to experience life. Yet Disney brilliantly captured one of life’s most beautiful struggles through the lives of clownfish in a remarkable comingof-age classic.

4. Cameron Poe — “Con Air’ (1997): Although Nicolas Cage is making a comeback, there was a time he was an A-lister amongst the A-listers and “Con Air” was his masterpiece. We got to see Cameron Poe defeat the most vile prisoners in the world, endure Dave Chapelle’s jabs and avoid the genius of John Malkovich’s evil— all to get home (along with a teddy bear) to his little girl.

3. Guido Orefice —“Life is Beautiful” (1997): Why? Because if you’ve ever watched this film and tried not to cry … you failed. Every time. It’s the movie about a father’s sacrifice during one of the darkest moments in history. Roberto Benigni directed and starred in the film, earning him just about every award under the cinematic sun.

7. Man — “The Road” (2009). The book was a masterpiece, so let’s not compare the brilliance of Cormac McCarthy to a movie. But Viggo Mortenson was able to do justice to one of the greatest novels ever written. Whether the father was taking his son on the right path is debatable, but his love for his son is undeniable in this apocalyptic tale that has never been matched.

2. Atticus Finch — “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962): Why? Because he was a civil rights badass before it was cool.

Today the book is being banned because “it makes readers uncomfortable about race.” We hate to break it to those folks, but that is exactly what author Harper Lee set out to accomplish with her protagonist Atticus Finch. In the end, a movie was made and who better to play the role of father than Gregory Peck, installing the values of fairness, equality and morals to his daughter.

6. Daniel Hillard — “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) Why? Because dedication means spending time with your children no matter the means, even if you need to dress up like an aging nanny.

Robin Williams could have played a tree stump and we would all still watch it, but this movie worked during the era it was created and it certainly showcased the genius of the late, great actor.

1. Clark Griswold — National Lampoon’s Movie Franchise: Why? Because we said so and we’re not apologizing for this one. The goofy, yet enduring love Clark Griswold portrayed for his family are some of the most memorable and quotable movie moments in cinematic history.

In the end, he did it all for family, with a little help from Ellen, Cousin Eddie and Snot.

RISING NATURAL GAS PRICES CAUSE SURGE

K

eys Energy Services’ (KEYS) customers will experience an increase in their June energy bills, as a result of increased natural gas costs driving the cost of electricity higher.

An average KEYS’ residential customer consuming 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity during the month of June will see an energy bill for $210. In May, this same consumption resulted in a bill of $161.65, which is a 29.9% increase. The amount of the increase will vary based on how much electricity a customer uses. (One kilowatt hour is equivalent to 1,000 watts consumed over a period of one hour.)

The Power Cost Adjustment (PCA) charge for the month of June will be $74.65 per 1,000 kilowatt hours (kwh), compared to $26.30 per 1,000 kwh in May. KEYS’ Energy charge is $110 per 1,000 kwh for residential customers and assumes wholesale power costs of $62.20 per 1,000 kwh. When energy costs fluctuate above or below that $62.20 per 1,000 kwh, KEYS passes the increase/ decrease along to customers via a PCA charge/credit.

“The cost of natural gas had been at record lows in recent years and these savings were passed along to our customers in the form of a credit,” said Lynne Tejeda, KEYS’ general manager & CEO. “The price of natural gas has surged

over the last year and what had been a credit has escalated to a charge.”

She cited disruptions in natural gas production, reduced rig counts during the pandemic, lower gas storage inventory, and the exporting of fuel as a result of the war in Ukraine as drivers of the natural gas price increase.

KEYS power cost adjustment had been a credit on energy bills since January 2018.

A PCA charge was first implemented in January 2022. Tejeda did not rule out future power cost adjustments. “If the cost of natural gas climbs higher, KEYS will pass those costs on through the PCA charge,” she said. “We’ll be monitoring the costs carefully and working with our power supplier to mitigate these increases.”

Tejeda said the higher bills are driven by both the rate and the energy usage.

Customers can help offset the higher rate by consuming less energy if they are interested in making some adjustments. She urged KEYS’ customers to log on to keysenergy. com and click on the Growing Greener Every Day icon for tips on how to best conserve energy. While online, customers can sign up for a free home energy survey, rebates for qualified energy efficient appliances, and receive information on how to better track their monthly energy usage.

HEMINGWAY DAYS SET FOR JULY 21-23

E

ach July visitors can spot the spirit of Ernest Hemingway (or even scores of spirits) on the island where the legendary author lived and wrote during the 1930s. That’s because as many as 150 stocky, white-bearded aspiring “Ernests” converge on Key West in July to compete in Sloppy Joe’s annual Hemingway Look-Alike Contest.

Set for Thursday through Saturday, July 21-23, the contest takes place at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, 201 Duval St., a historic saloon where Hemingway often enjoyed cocktails with cohorts. The event is a highlight of the annual Hemingway Days celebration of the literary legend’s writing talent and exuberant Key West lifestyle.

Look-alike contestants come from around the United States and other countries to vie for the title of “Papa,” a nickname adopted by the author. Many compete in khaki safari attire or heavy turtleneck sweaters — even in the Key West summer — to emulate his signature garb.

Spectators can cheer for their favorite contenders during preliminary rounds set for 6:30 p.m.

Thursday and Friday, July 21 and 22, and the finals at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23.

The Hemingway hopefuls will be judged by previous contest winners, including Zach Taylor of Ambrose, Georgia, who triumphed in 2021 after an astonishing three-way tie.

Before Thursday’s preliminary round, the “Papas” will celebrate the 123rd anniversary of Ernest’s July 21 birth and announce the recipients of the Hemingway Look-Alike Society’s scholarships for Florida Keys students.

Scheduled too is a Wednesday evening “meet and greet” at Sloppy Joe’s, where contestants and their fans can mingle with former winners.

Look-alikes also take center stage at Sloppy Joe’s “Running of the Bulls,” a spoof of the renowned annual event in Pamplona, Spain. More a parade of “Papas” than a fast-paced sporting challenge, the offbeat run features manmade mock bulls and begins at 1 p.m. Saturday outside Sloppy Joe’s. It is preceded by a noontime photo opportunity for look-alikes and the enthusiasts flocking to support them.

While living in Key West, Hemingway wrote literary classics including “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “To Have and Have Not,” a novel set primarily in the island city.

wo guys from Ohio and New Hampshire caught up with each other in Key West and started making music, loads of it, together, separately and with other folks in different bands.

Together, Nick Brownell (the Ohio half) and David Bryce Warren (New Hampshire) are the Raw Dawggs, a two-piece, electrified alternative rock duo that plays everyone’s favorite covers while “bringing the rawness to the island,” as their merchandise declares.

Warren is the drummer and Brownell is the guitarist and singer.

“They produce a sound that is massive and it can be heard throughout the island whenever they perform,” says Warren’s website.

Brownell was voted Entertainer of the Year earlier this year at the first-ever Key West Music Awards. Warren plays six nights a week at several Duval Street clubs and bars and has released two original albums on which he writes, records and plays every instrument and sings every song.

The Raw Dawggs will perform on Thursday, June 23 at 8 p.m. at Key West Theater as part of its “Summer Sounds: A Local-ish Concert Series” running from June to August.

The Awesome Foundation and its director Michael Shields provided a $1,000 grant to create a plaque and a coral stone garden around the picturesque tree at Fort East Martello, where poets are encouraged to read their own or others’ works of poetry.

“The tree is a place for anyone in Key West to gather for random acts of poetry,” Sloan said. “It was made possible with a grant from Awesome Foundation Key West, and the collaboration of several people, poets and organizations including past and present Key West poet laureates.

“Nance Boylan, Jack Hackett and Arlo Haskell planted roots with this project that will continue to grow. Michael Gieda and the team at Key West Art & Historical Society and Fort East Martello Museum provided the earth where this project can flourish.

Michael Shields and the Awesome Foundation team provided money and inspiration, and dozens of local poets brought words of water.”

The tree was dedicated on June 11 to the memory of poet Ray Campbell.

“Several poems were read in his memory, including one he wrote called ‘Thoughts On Nude Poetry Readings.’ None of us took our clothes off, but several people bared their souls,” Sloan said.

Poets at the dedication included Vicki Boguszewski, David Johnson, Mia Shawn, Ron Colwell, Sheri Lohr, John Gibson Parker, Jack Hackett and Michael Shields.

he above excerpt is from a poem, “Half Mast,” by Key West poet laureate Jack Hackett. He recited it at the March for Our Lives rally for common sense gun laws on June 11 at Bayview Park.

The event was held in solidarity with the March for Our Lives movement started by survivors of the February 2018 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Attendees in Key West held signs facing Truman Avenue calling for limits on AR-15s and assault rifles. Speakers also included Ann Labriola and Donna Windle, who detailed statistics on gun violence in America.

The national March for Our Lives movement is dedicated to seeking common ground on which all Ameri-

cans can agree and compromise to reduce gun violence.

“We call for robust investment in the things communities around the country need to live in safety, including community-based violence reduction programs, suicide prevention programs, domestic violence prevention programs, and mental and behavioral health service programs,” the March for Our Lives website states.

“We need leaders willing to take bold steps to address the national gun violence epidemic. President Biden and all our elected officials must act with a fierce urgency to call this crisis what it is: a national public health emergency. They must acknowledge that the level of gun violence in the United States is unprecedented for a developed nation. … And they must commit to holding an unpatriotic gun lobby and gun industry accountable, not just for weakening our nation’s gun laws, but for illegal behavior and self-dealing that offends and contradicts America’s vast majority of responsible gun owners.”

I’m appalled by those who would sidestep the call for common-sense sense gun control legislation, especially on behalf of the members of the Key West City Commission in a resolution letting our national leadership know we stand for their approval and action toward protecting people as they shop and worship, and children in the place they should be safest aside from their home, their schools!

It bothers me immensely that these people will ignore the call for such sensibility in favor of more guns, bulletproof backpacks etc., rather than the meat of the issue: Guns in the hands of those who should not have them. In fact they frequently point to mental health, arming teachers, making our schools more like prisons than institutions of learning and mental health, not as an additional action, but rather as the ONE action they believe should be taken.

I am just as concerned about those law enforcement officers who protect us on a daily basis, running up on someone, who has more firepower in their immediate possession, as I am about the folks praying in their church, synagogue or mosque, grocery shopping, children going to school etc. I come from a family with generations of decorated law enforcement officers, including my deceased youngest brother. I, too, am a gun owner, although I would not own a high-powered killing machine as those used so often in these absurd acts of death.

Finally, if it’s true that all politics is local, then our citizenry has a right to know where we locally elected officials stand on these issues of national importance. Sandy Hook, Columbine, Uvalde and others are small, fairly isolated communities — as is ours. Were we not to take a stand THEN is when we would have failed our responsibility.

Demanding on the local level that something be done by those who have the power to do so in higher elected office, is as much our responsibility as any local ordinance. Not doing so would have been a dereliction of our duty.

Golfer Greg Norman is a top executive of LIV. But there’s a problem. LIV’s money comes from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. In other words, oil money, which to some people is dirty money; not to mention Saudi Arabia’s track record of human rights violations, including its alleged involvement in the murder and dismemberment of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi four years ago in Turkey.

The PGA suspended Mickelson and 16 other golfers who qualified for LIV’s first tournament, which was held in London last week. Later, Bryan DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Ian Poulter and Pat Perez also dropped out of the PGA to play in the LIV. Other LIV golfers include Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Talor Gooch and Louis Oosthuizen. The PGA has warned other golfers they, too, will not be eligible to play in PGA Tour events if they play in the LIV Series.

Johnson told reporters in London that he had signed a four-year inducement deal with LIV for a reported $150 million.

CHARL SCHWARTZEL, a former Masters Tournament winner, won the LIV’s first 54-hole event among 47 participants and took home $4 million plus $750,000 for his share of the team competition. (Unlike PGA Tour events, which include four rounds of golf, LIV events are only three rounds, or 54 holes. Hence the name LIV, which is 54 in Roman numerals.)

Mickelson and Kevin Na tied for 33rd place, winning $150,000 each, which is in addition to inducement fees they accepted to join the LIV. Garcia tied for 22nd and won $172,000. In last place, Itthipat Buranatanyarat took home $122,000.

The first LIV tournament was televised on YouTubeTV, and initial coverage in the U.S. could be limited to streaming services and social platforms.

LIV didn’t make the ESPN highlights its first few days, and that network could determine LIV’s acceptance, at least in this country.

Why shouldn’t there be a second major golf league? I’m for it. Some golfers, Mickelson included, have voiced gripes against the PGA. So, perhaps it isn’t perfect. Other sports have two or more divisions. There used to be two pro football leagues, although alternative pro- football leagues have not survived. And there will still be plenty of “big-name” golfers left for the PGA. TAKING PART IN LAST WEEK’S Canadian Open tournament, opposite the first LIV event, were Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Justin Rose, Sam Burns, Cameron Smith and Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy and Thomas were tied at the 17th hole on the final day, but McIlroy birdied, while Thomas bogied.

That clinched it for McIlroy’s repeat as the Canadian champ. Finau kicked up into second place when Thomas bogied 18 as well.

The U.S Open is this week at Brookline, Massachusetts. It’s not run by the PGA and is allowing LIV golfers to play.

The other majors are independent as well.

Several TV announcers have taken a strong position against the LIV golfers.

Mark Rolfing, a prominent voice on the Golf Channel, said his “sadness was turning to anger,” when the jumping golfers were announced.

The money is too much to resist.

I read that Tiger Woods turned down an offer of $1 billion to go LIV, whose second tournament is June 30 through July 2 in Portland, Oregon.

AS I SAID, I accept the idea of a second golf league. It’s an awful lot of money, at least to me. I’ve never had close to what I accept as a lot of money.

If someone gave me $4 million all at once, what would I do with it?

The first thing I’d do is buy a new car, as the one I have is several years old. Truth be told, I’d probably buy an expensive, sporty car. I’d buy a house, and we know that in Key West we’re talking more than $1 million. I’d hire a housekeeper, probably to live in and cook three meals a day. New clothes.

Incidentals. Money gifts for my six children. Same for my church and some other charities.

Wait, I’ve still got plenty left. And, if I’m one of those golfers, there’s another tournament next week. Can my bank handle this much money?

ocal parades, beach parties and onthe-water fun topped off by fireworks displays will highlight Independence Day celebrations throughout the Florida Keys.

KEY WEST • The Key Lime Festival features culinary and libation adventures Thursday, June 30, through Monday, July 4, showcasing the tiny fruit that inspired Key lime pie, the Florida Keys’ signature dessert. The mouthwatering Key Lime Pie Eating Championship, the festival highlight, is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 4, at the oceanfront Southernmost Beach Cafe at 1405 Duval St. Participants with their hands behind their backs must dive in facefirst to devour an entire 9-inch Key lime pie faster than their rivals. • Mermaids in red, white and blue finery are expected to appear at the “4th of July Mermaid Splash” event, set for 10. a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lagerheads Beach Bar, a favorite spot at 0 Simonton Street. or generations, American schoolchildren learned that the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863, freed the slaves. But that’s not accurate. The proclamation only freed slaves in the Union. With the Civil War still in progress, Confederate states did not abide by Union laws, and slavery continued in the Confederacy until Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia on April 9, 1865, ending the war and putting the Emancipation Proclamation into effect for all.

But it took two months for word to spread. On June 19, 1865, Union Gen. Gordon Granger reached Galveston, Texas, and informed the enslaved AfricanAmericans there that the war had ended and they were free.

The day became known as Juneteenth and has been celebrated ever since as the true end of slavery in America, because freedom without knowledge of it was no freedom at all.

Last year, President Biden signed legislation to make Juneteenth a national holiday called Juneteenth Independence Day. This Saturday, June 18, the holiday celebrations in Key West will take place at the African Cemetery on Higgs Beach.

Traditional Caribbean and AfroAmerican food will be available, along with special cocktails by Key West’s First Legal Rum Distillery, and mixtures by Dumps will be served from noon until the parade departs the area around 6 p.m.

There will be music from the African Diaspora and live reggae and Caribbean music performances

by Toko Irie and his children Nina, Naomi, Aaron, Ian and Ariel Newton. The live entertainment starts at 1 p.m.

The formal celebration begins at 3 p.m. with words by the founders of the African Cemetery, Corey Malcom and Gene Tinnie, as well as other dignitaries, said coordinator Veronica Stafford.

The evening will end with a Caribbean Carnival Parade through the streets of Key West and will end at the stairs of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, one of the major sponsors. Keys Auto will provide golf carts for those unable to dance the entire route of the parade.

ango lovers can celebrate the sweet, juicy fruit and its heritage in Key West Thursday through Sunday, June 23-26, during the island’s annual Mango Fest.

The event schedule includes photo and art competitions, a silent auction, a gala mangothemed brunch and a Mango Mania Vendor Village to explore and enjoy.

Now in its sixth year, the summer festival honors the tropical fruit that has been a refreshing staple of Florida Keys recipes for generations.

Mango trees are abundant in the Keys and the fruit, generally available from late May through October, is used in dishes ranging from salads to seafood sauces and desserts.

Highlighting the schedule is the free-admission Vendor Village with booths featuring all things mango. Attractions will include artisans’ wares, exhibits, mango merchandise and enticing edibles incorporating the delicacy sometimes called the “king of fruit.”

Festival goers can explore the village from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at Key West’s Bayview Park, 1320 Truman Ave. Entries in the mango-themed art contest will be displayed at the village and also auctioned. The contest is open to everyone; pieces must depict the mango in some form.

Entries in the mango photo contest will be posted at mangofestkeywest.com/photo-contest, where fans can vote for their favorites. Art contest entries will appear there as well.

Festivities conclude following the “Everything Mango Brunch” set for midday Sunday, June 26, at the Lost Kitchen Supper Club at 6810 Front St. on Stock Island. The menu created by chef Martin Liz features delicacies ranging from housemade mango-fennel chicken sausage to lobster Benedict with mango hollandaise sauce.

KEYS COMMUNITY RALLIES BEHIND AHEC’S BUDGET SHORTFALL

NONPROFIT HAS MADE UP NEARLY ALL OF $650,000 FUNDING REQUEST ALEX RICKERT

n March 14, when the Florida state legislature passed a record-high $112.1 billion budget, Keys Area Health Education Center (AHEC) officials were devastated to learn that the spending plan did not include the $650,000 requested for the organization in order to provide medical and dental care to vulnerable Keys children in low- and moderate-income families.

Though it received significant funding for the last eight years — $500,000 for the 20212022 fiscal year — not a dime would come to the organization from the state level in 20222023.

“I literally don’t know what we’re going to do,” Michael Cunningham, AHEC CEO, told Keys Weekly upon learning the news.

But less than 90 days later, Cunningham says local governments and community organizations have answered the call for AHEC, with donations and commitments currently covering all but $20,000 of the agency’s original request to the state.

“It really was a daunting task to have to take on … but the community really came together,” said Cunningham. “There were multiple entities and individuals who reached out to us and helped with the process, whether it was directing us to specific foundations with specific assets or making introductions to individuals and other entities that we didn’t have a relationship with in the past.”

Though some commitments have yet to be fully finalized, AHEC’s tally currently includes: $100,000 from the Ocean Reef Community Foundation, with a $50,000 gift and another $50,000 requiring matching donations; another $100,000 grant obtained through the same foundation requiring a match; a $25,000 donation from the Ocean Reef Children’s Foundation; a $200,000 donation from the Edward B. and Joan T. Knight Foundation; a $25,000 donation from insurer Florida Blue; a $50,000 donation from Baptist Health South Florida; two $10,000 donations from the Key West Noon Time and Marathon Rotary Clubs; and a $9,500 donation from United Way of Collier County.

Other commitments from the Monroe County School District, the cities of Key West and Marathon, and the Village of Islamorada are in the works.

AHEC provides services to children during school hours including, but not limited to, yearly physical exams, COVID-19 testing, sick and wellness visits, treatment for minor injuries, and vision and hearing tests and prescriptions. In January, the nonprofit partnered with

the Waypoint Foundation and the Smile Maker program to add a state-of-the-art mobile dental van and serve all areas of the Keys on a rotating schedule.

According to Cunningham, much of AHEC’s offerings would have been temporarily axed if community partners hadn’t stepped up.

“With a $650,000 loss, that would have been roughly 60% of our funds,” he said. “We would have had to close about a third of our health centers and eliminate the dental program altogether. Having this support gives us a full budget, which means that we’ll be able to keep all centers open and be able to run our full dental program throughout next year.”

While the appropriations bill for AHEC was filed by state Rep. Jim Mooney in November 2021 and reported favorably out of the House Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee on Jan. 18, the organization has yet to receive a solid answer as to why the longtime funding request didn’t make it to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis.

But looking forward, Cunningham said conversations with state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez and Mooney have been encouraging, with AHEC moving up the list as a “renewed priority” for the next year.

In addition, AHEC has secured a new lobbying firm, moving on from lobbyists at Metz, Husband & Daughton in favor of Johnston & Stewart Government Strategies.

“I think with a new lobbying firm, we’re going to be very active with our local legislators as well as those on the Appropriations Committee, more so than we have been in the past,” said Cunningham. “It will include multiple visits to those individuals and offices throughout the legislative calendar. … We should have their full attention next year.”

THE STORY OF TAVERNIER’S ‘DOC’ LOWE

E

dward R. Lowe was born circa 1882 and first arrived in the Florida Keys following the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. During the war, he served as a medic. He showed up in the Keys as a teenager, and his time on the islands was nothing short of colorful.

Though he studied law and medicine, he never earned a formal degree in either discipline. It did not stop him from becoming “Doc” Lowe. In 1910, during the construction of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad, he was placed in charge of the Marathon hospital erected to tend to railroad workers. He also served as the local coroner. 1910 was a busy year for Lowe, who, on Sept. 3, was commissioned as a justice of the peace, too.

Lowe did not always live in the Keys, and after his work with the railroad, he moved to the Miami area.

In 1915, he ran for chief of police and lost. When he moved back to the Keys, he settled in the Key Largo community of Tavernier, where he became a man who wore many hats. As an officer of the court, Lowe became acquainted with Robert Toombs Smith after meeting at a murder trial held in Jacksonville. The two became friends,

and over several summers during the mid-1920s, Doc Lowe and his family began vacationing with the Smiths at their family homestead.

During Prohibition, the Smith property served as a distribution portal for rum runners and bootleggers. A telegraph operator would alert Smith whenever a shipment of booze was coming in from Nassau. Shortly after that, rum runners would come up Mullet Creek, in the Indian River area where the 159-acre Smith homestead had been established, and unload their contraband.

In a taped interview conducted

by Ken Knudsen in 1990, Captain Bill Smith, the son of Lowe’s friend, said, “Sometimes there would be as many as 50 cars parked on our property waiting to get loaded up.” Smith said he saw over $1 million in cash move across the family’s kitchen table. According to Captain Bill, Doc Lowe enjoyed the Smith family’s corn whiskey.

Bill and his brother John became charter captains licensed by the Coast Guard in 1928. Later that year, Doc Lowe contacted the Smith boys to say he needed a couple of charter boat captains to work at his new Tavernier club. Doc Lowe, who operated a “professional and businessmen’s” club in Coral Gables, opened a secondary location in the Keys where he could entertain his members. When the Tavernier club opened, it was a twostory house on a piece of oceanfront property near the Leonard Lowe family – the two Lowes were unrelated.

Captain Bill went on to work for Doc Lowe until he left the Keys in 1930. Doc Lowe and his club continued to operate, as was detailed in the December 1931 issue of Motor Boat Magazine:

One account of the storm published in The Miami News on September 4, 1935, described the Lowe family experience. “In one corner, huddled in stark fear were Mr. and Mrs. Doc Lowe, their son and daughter-in-law and the latter’s nine-month-old baby. They were too frightened to talk at first.

Doc was wounded in the head, maybe seriously. But they finally told us of the four of them taking turns holding the baby and clinging to a tree for four hours, before they were able to make their way to the Prevo bungalow.”

The Lowes remained in Tavernier after the storm, and, in 1937, Doc built a modern real-estate office, at which point he was wearing the hats of a real estate agent, justice of the peace and local historian. Lowe was elected president of the Florida Association of Justices and Constables in 1939. It would not be the last of his political aspirations, and he ran for state senator in 1946.

In one of his political advertisements, he said: “I have an unlimited and unsatisfied curiosity, always wanted to know what made the wheels turn and what caused them to click. As a result, I have attended each session of the Legislature for the past 14 years to study its mechanism or modus operandi as they would express it. I found that there were wheels and wheels within wheels, and that they all turned mighty. But more often than not, there was just a whir and not a click.”

Edward R. “Doc” Lowe suffered a stroke in 1951 and died at 70 years of age on June 10, 1952. He left behind his wife Ellie and son Claude. Doc Lowe was buried at Miami’s Woodlawn Cemetery.

E

arlier this month, The Studios of Key West sent out a challenge to the island’s creative folk: to come together to write, rehearse and create backdrops for four brand-new 10-minute plays — in just 24 hours. The result, “One Night Stand,” unfolds before a live audience on Saturday, June 25, with shows at 7 and 9 p.m. at The Studios.

Tickets are $35/$30 members, and are on sale now. “‘One Night Stand’ is an exciting event that encourages people to produce some of their best and brightest work,” said Gwen Filosa, who will emcee this year’s event. “I loved writing my first play in 2016 and watching the cast and crew bring it to life. And it’s just fun.”

The night before the show, the surprise elements are revealed: a secret line and prop, which playwrights must work into each brand new script. But that’s where the similarities end.

“You really have no idea what you’re going to get till the curtain goes up,” said Elena Devers, deputy director. “We’ve

had comedies, musicals and tragedies, and plays that take place everywhere from Mars to the set of ‘Wheel of Fortune.’”

Working from headshots of actors they’ve pulled at random, playwrights work overnight to create a brand new 10-minute play. Four freshly penned scripts are delivered to The Studios’ office by dawn the next morning.

On Saturday morning, the actors, directors, artists, stagehands and volunteers pick up the creative baton. They spend the day memorizing lines, rehearsing plays, creating sets and making or finding props and costumes.

The results are always surprising. When the curtain rises, actors rely on imagination, coffee and, in a pinch, a lot of improv to wow the audience.

UNITED BY WATER FLORIDA KEYS WELL-REPRESENTED AT UN WORLD OCEANS DAY

T

he ocean matters.

Obviously, living here in the Florida Keys, we know this.

In fact, the importance of our local environment is one of the things that most everyone – regardless of political leanings and beliefs – knows to be true.

I didn’t have to go to New York City for World Oceans Day at the United Nations for someone to tell me this. Nevertheless, while that international celebration of all things blue did lend itself to some general declarations of the ocean’s importance, I was grateful and heartened to see some issues important to us here in the Florida Keys on the agenda and some familiar faces suggesting global solutions. I am happy to share those with you now.

The most obvious and critical discussions centered around coral, and how to help reefs survive warming oceans. According to NOAA, nearly all coral reefs around the world will be threatened by 2050. Local and global pressures, from overfishing to ocean acidification, are to blame.

This doesn’t bode well for us in the Keys, where our coral reef – the third largest barrier reef in the world – underpins our entire island economy. NOAA estimates that the coral reefs in southeast Florida have an asset value of $8.5 billion. They generate $4.4 billion in local sales, $2 billion in local income and 70,400 full- and part-time jobs.

Because we are a tourism-based economy, the United Way estimates that some 60% of our Keys residents depend on the marine environment for their livelihood.

Naturally, many tourists and visitors choose the Keys as their destination of choice to share in our 360-degree access to the ocean.

From fishing to boating, sunset sailing to scuba diving, there’s a little something for everyone on the rock. For locals, we also realize that our coral reef supports the hotels, restaurants, shops and other businesses that employ so many of us. We need a healthy reef and a sustainable ocean economy in order to keep the Keys going.

Therefore, when our oceans aren’t healthy, it’s also a problem.

There’s less coral and fewer fish. Less life underwater means fewer tourists coming to visit. Everything and everyone suffers.

At World Oceans Week at The Explorers Club, an unofficial, weeklong celebration that sandwiches the single-day event at the United Nations, I ran into David and DeeDee Vaughan, of Plant a Million Corals. The former, a coral restoration legend and savant, spoke on

a coral futures panel alongside Florida Aquarium, Kaust University from Saudi Arabia and the Global Fund for Coral Reefs. All speakers anchored their talks around the hope they still have for coral around the world, but Vaughan stunned the audience by describing his work in the Keys. He’s building modular systems in shipping containers that can quickly, efficiently and effectively grow corals in acrylic tanks. Corals can reach reproductive size 10, 20 or more times faster than they would in the wild.

Finally, on the Thursday of World Oceans Week, I enjoyed learning more about blue carbon and the incredible mangrove. A 2018 study indicated that, pound for pound, mangroves can sequester four times as much carbon as terrestrial rainforests. That’s right – all those endangered, protected mangroves that line our coasts in the Keys are doing us a huge favor by storing excess carbon from the atmosphere into the soil beneath their roots. They also help strengthen our shorelines against storm surges, wave damage and sea-level rise. Global mangrove restoration efforts are becoming critical to keeping coastal communities like ours safe.

So there you have it: coral restoration, ocean technology and mangrove protection. Three leading ocean issues that we know well here in the Keys being discussed on the biggest blue stage in the world. I hopped on my flight back to Miami grateful for the international renown that science being conducted right here is receiving, and with a renewed commitment to our local environment. Together, the future will still be blue.

ne hour a week makes a huge difference, and volunteers are always welcome every Friday and some Saturday mornings, from 8 to 9 a.m., when teams clean up a designated area of the island.

A troubling number of cigarette butts and plastic bags have been included in recent hauls. Please remember your reusable bags when shopping so we can keep the plastic off the streets, parking lots and, most importantly, out of the water.

And dispose of cigarette butts in any receptacle rather than the street or sidewalk, as from there, they easily end up in the ocean.

The city of Key West and its residents ask everyone to do their part to help keep Key West beautiful.

With simple steps like making sure you bag your trash before putting it in your Waste Management trash cans or Dumpsters, and making sure the lids on Dumpsters are closed, will keep a lot of trash from blowing into the streets. Call Waste Management at 305-296-8297 for any furniture items left on the city right of way.

Please pick up around your home or apartment complex. Every piece of trash picked up is one less that may end up in the ocean that surrounds and sustains our island community. It is not just the large items you can see easily when you are walking, but the smaller items such as bottle caps and cigarette butts that are collected by the volunteers that make the biggest difference.

All are invited to join the Friday morning cleanups from 8 to 9 a.m.

Parking is provided and all volunteers receive a parking pass when needed for metered or residential parking spots. See the calendar here for Friday cleanup locations. Call Dorian Patton at City Hall with any questions at 305-809-3782.

THE IMPOSSIBLE US

By Sarah Lotz Everything is falling apart for Nick, a struggling writer whose wife has suddenly left him for his best friend.

When Nick sends off a scathing email to a client who frequently owes him money, his life turns upside down. Bee receives this email and responds to let him know he’s got the wrong email address. A witty banter ensues (think “You’ve Got Mail”) quickly turning to flirtation and late-night heart-to-hearts.

The two finally decide it is time to meet in person. But Nick never shows – and Bee never appears. Initially both angry and hurt, the two dive back through their hundreds of messages, and glaring red flags are everywhere. Shockingly, they are not in the same time or universe. Desperately wanting to meet each other but also filled with a strong desire to make everything right, Nick and Bee go out on a limb and commit to ideas that seem utterly impossible. This alternateworld, time-travel-ish premise is superbly original and filled with wonderfully quirky, clever characters. Beautifully written, this fun romantic journey will fill you with wonder. THE LOVE OF MY LIFE

By Rosie Walsh Emma loves her husband Leo more than anything. They have a beautiful daughter and have spent the past decade building a lovely home. Emma has recently gone into remission, and the couple are often reminded of their deep connection and gratitude for her current health. Leo is an obituary writer for the city’s newspaper and Emma is a well-known marine biologist and spokeswoman on BBC. Leo can’t seem to resist his nature of soothing his own fears by writing a column for Emma, hopefully not to be published for many years to come.

As he quietly digs deeper into her past, Leo finds pieces of a puzzle that do not fit together. It doesn’t take long before his anxiety has him exposing horrifying emails and text messages. He begins to doubt if he knows his wife at all. When a well-known actress goes missing, Emma mysteriously has a secret relationship with the woman’s husband, an outspoken and rather brash radio host named Jeremy. The more Emma tries to explain each finding, the more twisted her lies become. A mysterious love story that makes even the most mundane details appear sinister.
