A

Republican candidate for state representative is criticizing current Rep. Jim Mooney’s vote supporting strawberry shortcake as Florida’s official state dessert. Mooney said he finds the latest attack by his opponent to be “eighthgrade material.”

A June 2 Facebook post showed Rhonda Rebman Lopez holding up a Key lime pie. Within the post, Rebman Lopez states that her opponent voted for strawberry shortcake as the state’s official dessert and not Key lime pie.

Early into the legislative session, senators and representatives in the House passed a bill declaring strawberry shortcake the state’s official dessert. The Senate version, SB 1006, was sponsored by Sen. Danny Burgess.

He represents Plant City, which has 10,000-plus acres of strawberry fields.

According to his bill, those fields make up 75 percent of the U.S. winter strawberry crop.

Senators unanimously said “yes” to the bill. The House followed up with a 109-4 vote.

Rebman Lopez told Keys Weekly that she was called into a meeting by some longtime residents of Key West.

She said they were “disturbed that he didn’t fight for Key lime pie to remain the state dessert.”

“Key lime pie is one of our own.

No matter what happens, we have to defend Key lime pie. Key lime pie is a catalyst for our economy,” she said.

“Do you know how many people come to the Keys and expect to eat Key lime pie? And do you know how many stores sell Key lime pie?

“For our current representative to try to be everyone’s friend and say strawberries are a huge industry in Florida, we all know that. There’s a lot of huge industries in Florida. But Key lime pie is the Florida Keys,” she continued.

never an issue in Tallahassee. The strawberry farmers, who represent a $5-billion-a-year industry, asked for strawberry shortcake to be a dessert.

“The whole thing was I didn’t vote against the Key lime pie. I voted to make the strawberry shortcake a dessert in the state of Florida. And Key lime pie is still the pie of the state of Florida,” Mooney said. “Of course Key lime is still the best dessert on the menu.”

During the session, the Conch Republic Key Lime Pie Council sent out a petition on change.org that urged the legislature to declare strawberry shortcake as the state’s official cake and Key lime pie the official pie. It garnered 7,131 votes. “Together they can share the limelight as Florida’s official desserts,” read a proposed resolution

by Key West’s David Sloan, Paul Menta and Sam Kaufman.

A staple within the Keys dining scene and throughout the Florida dessert menu, the pie still holds the title as the state’s official pie.

Mooney added that he’s more concerned about rising insurance rates and other matters that are affecting the lives of Monroe County residents.

“I try to stay focused on what matters to the constituents, not the media,” he said. “What matters to constituents is insurance rates are blowing up. In Monroe County, what matters is 2023. And she doesn’t have answers for that.”

Mooney and Rebman Lopez are vying for the Republican nod heading into the November general election.

Mooney, Rebman Lopez and Alexandria Suarez, who’s running for a school board seat against Sue Woltanski this year, competed in a fiery 2020 primary that saw attack mailers and text messages. Mooney edged out Rebman Lopez by 148 votes to win the primary.

He went on to defeat Democrat Clint Barras in the November 2020 election.

Monetary campaign contributions to Rebman Lopez total $52,685, while Mooney’s campaign has $157,493.20.

They’re joined by Big Pine resident Robert Allen, who filed last December.

Contributions to his campaign total $150.

Mooney is endorsed by several Republican leaders in Tallahassee. They include Paul Renner, incoming speaker of the Florida House; Danny Perez, speaker of the House in 2024; and Sam Garrison, speaker of the House in 2026.

“Certainly, having the speaker of the house and house Republican leadership behind me says a lot,” he said.

“That means a lot to me and it should mean a lot to the people of the district who understand that politics are not cut and dry. It’s not always an easy path. At the end of the day, there’s a reason why leadership endorsed me.

It's because I do a good job representing my district.”

Rebman Lopez, who announced her run on April 4, has secured an endorsement from the Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida. She said she continues to listen to the district’s needs and intends on delivering on those needs if elected.

“Homestead and Redland got shafted badly. Some of our largest farms in the country are in Redland,” she said. “Ninety percent of farming in winter comes out of South Florida.

Homestead is the largest city in District 120.”

Lawyer and Big Coppitt resident Adam Gentle and Cutler Bay resident Daniel Horton-Diaz are vying for the Democratic nod. Primaries are set for Aug. 23.

FILLS’ FUTURE DISCUSSIONS CONTINUE Plan for guardrail has opposition

G

uardrail, delineated parking with declaration lanes and kayak launches are among the items within the village’s proposed plan for a scenic yet dangerous stretch of road that connects Upper Matecumbe and Lower Matecumbe Keys.

A.J. Engelmeyer, village public works director, discussed the plan for the area known as the Fills during the June 2 meeting of the Islamorada Village Council. Engelmeyer said it’s a “less is more” approach. Per the plan, shared use paths for bikers and pedestrians would move away from the highway on the islands that make up the Fills, Lignumvitae Key, Tea Table Relief and Indian Key Fill. Guardrails would be placed along both sides of the highway to provide a barrier between those who use the path and vehicles. It would prevent vehicles from illegally parking.

In addition, the Fills would become a nopassing zone and a no-swim zone.

On Indian Key Fill, Engelmeyer said, the plan proposes closing access to the boat ramp area on the southern end and keeping access on the northern end.

“This gives more of an area for queuing boats that pull in so they’re not waiting to turn off U.S. 1 if the boat ramp is backed up a little bit,” he said.

As for a boat ramp, Engelmeyer said they’re proposing to re-establish the former boat ramp that’s been out of service for many years and trimming mangroves in that area.

“If you’re launching in the current water access that’s there, you’re launching into an active channel. We feel it’s pretty unsafe to do that,” Engelmeyer said. “So we’re hoping that both FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation) and FDEP (Florida Department of Environmental Protection), will agree with us and look at moving to the existing boat ramp that was there many many years ago,” Engelmeyer said.

The current water access point at the launch on Indian Key would be used for kayaks.

A kayak launch and the addition of turn lanes are proposed on the north end of Tea Table Relief. On the south end, the bike path would be shifted farther from U.S. 1. Engelmeyer said there are revegetation zones for mitiga-

tion if and when the village is able to replace the boat ramp.

Mayor Pete Bacheler aided in the development of the plan. He said it’s nothing more than guardrails, parking for roughly 40 cars for a set period and no-parking signs.

“We’re not going to have any bathrooms.

We’re not going to allow people to stay down there too long. We’re not going to allow tents.

We’re not going to allow barbecuing. … none of that,” he said.

Councilman Henry Rosenthal inquired into the cost of the improvements and specifically who’d be paying for it. Engelmeyer said the village would seek grants for the Florida Department of Transportation. Rosenthal said his position surrounded beautification of the Fills and didn’t believe guardrails contribute to that idea.

“I'm very much against guardrails … very much against it,” he said. “We have hedges all over Islamorada. I don't see anybody driving through those hedges. I really question this proj-

ect in its entirety. All we have to do is maintain it and that’s it.”

Engelmeyer said village staff does a great job addressing those who illegally park on the Fills. He added that 70-plus tickets were handed out to the nonresponsive people who “blow you off.”

Councilman David Webb said he’s sure FDOT indicated to the village that guardrails are necessary because pedestrians and bike trails are close to the highway. Besides pedestrian safety, he said, it delineates, similar to the swim zone the village placed at White Marlin Beach and Port Antigua beach on Lower Matecumbe.

“There’s clear delineation that you’re not supposed to go across the line. We don’t have huge law enforcement issues at Port Antigua because they (boats) know with certainty that

if they go inside that very visible buoy they'll be talked to by law enforcement,” he said.

“This is not just one thing,” he continued.

“You can’t just put up no-parking signs, walk away and expect every single person to comply with the no-parking zone. The reason why there's so much compliance isn't because of the signs, it's because we’re paying overtime to have staff down there (at the Fills).”

Discussion surrounding the Fills goes back several years as residents voiced displeasure over the crowding, trashing and safety issues seen during holidays and busy weekends. A place once packed with daytrippers is now an area with limited parking and a line of cones to prevent illegal parking. It’s all due to a sublease the village secured in 2019 for property owned

by Florida Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Protection.

By 2020, measures were taken to reduce parking space on the Fills. Barricades and orange cones still remain. A launch on Indian Key remains closed.

Cheryl Meads was a councilwoman during the time the village eyed a sublease for state property since FDOT wasn’t controlling daytrippers. She said nothing in the contract was required except permission if the village was seeking to do something on the Fills.

“The master plan was not necessary,” she said. “The question is what is it the community wants? What you hear overwhelmingly is they want no-parking signs and nothing else. We don’t need guardrails. FDOT didn’t put up guardrails. They aren’t required.”

A survey conducted by consultant CPH Inc. found that 60% of respondents were opposed to the idea of bringing active recreation, like boat and kayak access, to Indian Key Fill. Roughly 52% said they’re strongly opposed to restroom facilities on the Fills. Many also strongly agreed on a swim ban along the Fills, as well as no-wake zones.

Bacheler said the budget would go up $150,000 to $200,000 if the village keeps paying staff overtime to maintain the Fills without making changes.

“This council has a fiscal responsibility to be careful with our budget and to not waste the money of taxpayers sitting there in front of us,” he said. “The bottom line is safety and money.

We’re going in the right direction and these are good changes to make. I wouldn't support anything less than what we got.”

DESANTIS SLASHES $3 BILLION IN BUDGET KEYS FUNDING INTACT, BUT MOONEY’S FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAM CUT

INCOMING VILLAGE MANAGER TO GET $200,000 SALARY

ncoming Village Manager Ted Yates will receive a $200,000 salary, a monthly housing allowance of $4,000 and $15,000 to cover moving expenses from his Ohio home to Islamorada.

A contract between the village and Yates garnered the council’s approval during a June 2 meeting inside the Founders Park Community Center. The council selected the former Twinsburg, Ohio mayor out of four finalists during a special meeting on May 6.

Council members picked Vice Mayor Henry Rosenthal to carry out contract negotiations between the village and Yates. With the exception of cost of living increases, Rosenthal said there are no salary increases for 18 months. Yates will be offered health insurance benefits for his spouse, eligible children and himself for $125 per pay period. Currently, village employees on the family plan pay close to $900 for health, dental and vision coverage.

Councilman David Webb said he’s not unhappy that the village is subsidizing Yates’ health care. However, he said it’s expensive for village employees who need to cover anyone else in their family.

“This is something I’d encourage Ted and Maria (Bassett) to look at different options,” he said. “Along with housing costs for anybody who wants to be on village staff, this health insurance is a big big deal.”

Performance evaluations will be conducted every six months during the first 18 months of his employment. Terms of the agreement go for one year, unless terminated by either party sooner.

Rosenthal said he inserted language into the contract for an exit interview prior to any separation.

“If we can gain information we can correct in the future, this is the person to tell the story,” he said.

Gregg said the agreement and other prior agreements don’t have a gag order attached, but rather a non-disparagement clause.

“I'm sensitive to it because it could potentially cast the council and the village in general in a negative, and even disparaging, light,” he said. “There’s nothing like that in this agreement and haven’t been in other agreements.”

Yates will officially start on Aug. 1.

“I do appreciate the extra time. Going through 25 years of purging of a home is taking more than I anticipated. We’re getting there and we’ll be down there (on) Aug. 1 ready to go,” he said.

Yates will be in attendance for the June 16 special call meeting to discuss the building permit allocation system (BPAS). The meeting starts at 3 p.m. at the Founders Park Community Center.

$112.1-billion budget approved by the Florida House and Senate earlier in the year was slashed some $3 billion

by Gov. Ron DeSantis. While funding for the Keys remained in the budget, the governor slashed an appropriation sponsored by state Rep. Jim Mooney and approved by the legislature for a first responder behavioral intervention pilot program.

On June 3, DeSantis signed a budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year totaling $109.9 billion. An $11.7-billion investment in highways and bridges, $800 million for teacher raises, $500 for Everglades restoration and more than $733 million to protect waters and prized properties were among items included in the budget.

“Florida has preserved freedom and kept the economy open, which has enabled the state to outperform the nation in jobs, growth, and business formations,” DeSantis said. “Our commitment to freedom has paid off.”

A $1 billion inflation fund to deal with cost increases for state contracts due to inflation was cut by the governor. In his veto message, DeSantis said the fund, House Bill 5011, could exacerbate inflation by promising more public sector funds to pay more for supplies of materials.

“It also reduces the need for state agencies to make tough decisions with the funds already appropriated,” DeSantis wrote.

Other items slashed were a 4,500-bed prison totaling $645 million, a new correctional hospital totaling $195 million, a new spring training facility for the Tampa Bay Rays totaling $25 million and $2.5 million for an

opioid prevention program through the Florida Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs. A proposal for the purchase of two new aircraft totaling $31.3 million for use by more than 100 government officials throughout the year was also slashed by DeSantis.

“This is an inadvisable expense, especially under current economic conditions,” he said.

A smaller $750,000 appropriation request by Mooney sought to create a pilot project by equipping three sheriff’s offices with antidote equipment, training and access to telemedicine to help treat patients who present mental and behavioral health issues. Officers and deputies would get a simple, powerful tool to access clinicians to help de-escalate a situation or divert the person to more appropriate treatment options. Goals included creating safe communities, less taxpayer drainage due to fewer incarcerations and more productive and contributing citizens.

“If the subject accepts, he/she will be immediately connected to a licensed clinician for immediate treatment. A clinician will then decide the next best course of action including best next steps,” the request read.

Mooney said the legislation aimed to not only prevent a disaster or unnecessary death, but also to get people to the right treatment options instead of being locked behind bars.

“The idea was to try and make things happen across the board in a smoother way,” he said.

Roughly $51 million for Keys projects remained in the budget signed by DeSantis. Among the items included were $20 million for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, $5 million for land acquisition and $20 million to replace aging water transmission lines.

KEYS COMMUNITY RALLIES BEHIND AHEC’S BUDGET SHORTFALL Nonprofit has made up nearly all of $650,000 funding request ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com

n March 14, when the Florida state legislature passed a record-high $112.1 billion budget, Keys Area Health Education Center (AHEC) officials were devastated to learn that the spending plan did not include the $650,000 requested for the organization in order to provide medical and dental care to vulnerable Keys children in low- and moderate-income families.

Though it received significant funding for the last eight years — $500,000 for the 2021-2022 fiscal year — not a dime would come to the organization from the state level in 2022-2023.

“I literally don’t know what we’re going to do,” Michael Cunningham, AHEC CEO, told Keys Weekly upon learning the news.

But less than 90 days later, Cunningham says local governments and community organizations have answered the call for AHEC, with donations and commitments currently covering all but $20,000 of the agency’s original request to the state.

“It really was a daunting task to have to take on … but the community really came together,” said Cunningham. “There were multiple entities and individuals who reached out to us and helped with the process, whether it was directing us to specific foundations with specific assets or making introductions to individuals and other entities that we didn’t have a relationship with in the past.”

Though some commitments have yet to be fully finalized, AHEC’s tally currently includes: $100,000 from the Ocean Reef Community Foundation, with a $50,000 gift and another $50,000 requiring matching donations; another $100,000 grant obtained through the same foundation requiring a match; a $25,000 donation from the Ocean Reef Children’s Foundation; a $200,000 donation from the Edward B. and Joan T. Knight Foundation; a $25,000 donation from insurer Florida Blue; a $50,000 donation from Baptist Health South Florida; two $10,000 donations from the Key West Noon Time and Marathon Rotary Clubs; and a $9,500 donation from United Way of Collier County.

Other commitments from the Monroe County School District, the cities of Key West and Marathon, and the Village of Islamorada are in the works.

limited to, yearly physical exams, COVID-19 testing, sick and wellness visits, treatment for minor injuries, and vision and hearing tests and prescriptions. In January, the nonprofit partnered with the Waypoint Foundation and the Smile Maker program to add a state-of-the-art mobile dental van and serve all areas of the Keys on a rotating schedule.

According to Cunningham, much of AHEC’s offerings would have been temporarily axed if community partners hadn’t stepped up.

“With a $650,000 loss, that would have been roughly 60% of our funds,” he said. “We would have had to close about a third of our health centers and eliminate the dental program altogether. Having this support gives us a full budget, which means that we’ll be able to keep all centers open and be able to run our full dental program throughout next year.”

While the appropriations bill for AHEC was filed by state Rep. Jim Mooney in November 2021 and reported favorably out of the House Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee on Jan. 18, the organization has yet to receive a solid answer as to why the longtime funding request didn’t make it to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“I think with a new lobbying firm, we’re going to be very active with our local legislators as well as those on the Appropriations Committee, more so than we have been in the past,” said Cunningham. “It will include multiple visits to those

Offering special thanks to Uri Mikolay of the Ocean Reef Community Foundation, the Knight Foundation, Baptist Health and local municipalities, Cunningham said that while he is hesitant to see a silver lining in a major budget shortfall, the organization is beyond grateful for the new sources of community support.

“This will be something that we look back on and we learned from,” he said. “Certainly the new relationships and people understanding what we do and the importance of it, that was one of the positives that came out of the situation.”

KILLER SWORD A battle lasting nearly five hours ended in victory for Marathon-based Outlaw Sportfishing’s captain Brad Picariello, mate Steve Wisniewski and two charter clients from Massachusetts as the foursome hauled in a 12-foot swordfish.

Beginning the battle on their last drop of the day 30 miles offshore in 1,500 feet of water, the crew traveled more than eight miles, winding up 38 miles offshore by the time the fish was subdued. Though the massive swordfish was not weighed on a scale, the length and girth measurements paired with the commonly accepted standard billfish weight formula estimated the catch at 341 pounds. THE SNAKE LADY

Highly-touted hunter and sewer brought an attraction to Marathon

A

lma Cagle Bishop was born on June 9, 1902, and grew up in what she called the Texas boondocks. She hunted snakes on the Lone Star State’s plains as a little girl.

Before long, Alma was skinning her prey and using the leather to craft handmade belts, wallets and handbags. As word spread about the elegant designs of her hand-sewn wares, people she had never met began showing up at her ranch house to buy snakeskin goods.

When she had saved up enough money, Alma bought a car and a trailer and set off on an adventure that crisscrossed America. Whenever she started running low on cash, she stopped, went out into the woods and caught more snakes. After finding her way to Florida, she bought a house in Fort Myers and began working as a cashier for the local telephone company.

Alma continued to hunt for snakes, skin them and sew their leather into beautiful creations. The hunter in her loved the Everglades, where she would venture out to collect her specimens.

She caught hundreds of rattlesnakes for noted herpetologist Ross Allen and his Ross Allen Reptile Institute at Silver Springs. Allen wrestled alligators and milked venom from rattlesnake fangs for curious crowds who stopped at his attraction and learning facility.

Because collecting rattlesnake venom was deemed critically important, Alma was given a government vehicle, a 1941 Dodge “reconnaissance” vehicle, to use to get out into the Everglades and capture the slithery creatures. She would go out into the Florida wilds for a week at a time, sometimes with five or six other snake hunters, but she was always the only female snake handler. In 1951, Alma accompanied Ross Allen to Cuba to film a movie about the island’s wildlife.

By 1951, Alma was living in the Florida Keys.

She sold her Fort Myers house on Monroe Street for $3,500 in 1945 and moved to the Keys, where she had traveled on several snake-hunting expeditions. In those days, eastern diamondback rattlesnakes and red rat snakes were still found in abundance.

Maud invited Alma to set up a Keys history and little gift shop at the Flamingo, where the Skunk Ape. she sold snake skins and her handsewn wallets, bags and belts. Alma also showed off her pet snakes, an Eastern indigo snake (North America’s largest snake) and a boa constrictor, both famously photographed while draped in Ss across her shoulders.

However, the star of her shop was also the namesake of the little place she named Freddie’s Gift Shop. Freddie was a pet marmoset given to Alma as a gift. The tiny member of the monkey family weighed all of five ounces and proved so popular with people who came to browse through her snakeskin products that she named the shop after him. The shop, and Alma the snake lady, became something of a roadside attraction. Her leathers garnered enough attention to attract clients from as far away as Hollywood, California.

Alma listed her government-issued 1941 Dodge reconnaissance vehicle in the classified section of The Miami News for $1,000 in 1948. She still went snake hunting in the subtropical hammocks of the Keys when she could and did not require the Dodge to do that. When she could no longer go out into the bush and find local snakes, she traveled to South America on buying trips to purchase exotic snake skins to stitch into her leather creations. She sold her goods at Freddie’s but also from barstools at some of the local watering holes.

There are other parts of her life that are generally commented upon when people write about Marathon’s snake lady – how many lovers she may or may not have had, or how one time she allegedly rode her horse up to a bar in Key West – but those are not the things that made Alma such a badass. In the 1940s and 1950s, she was stomping around in the Florida wilds side-by- side with a bunch of men, out catching hundreds of rattlesnakes because the government needed the venom to produce anti-venom. Today, rattlesnakes are still milked of their venom in the name of medical research.

Alma Cagle Bishop once said about the Florida Keys, “It is the nearest thing to heaven I know.” It is good to know she felt that way because Alma, the snake lady, spent the rest of her life on Key Vaca. Alma Cagle Bishop died on Aug. 31, 1975, after she was hit by a car while walking across the Overseas Highway in Marathon the night before. She is buried on Big Pine Key at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

A moving Memorial Day ceremony To The Editor: Basking in love and fellowship, sourced from an extensive gathering of spirited citizens filling two tiers of the Murray Nelson Government Center Auditorium, an enormous healing was generated by the depth and sincerity of their gratitude, for the ultimate sacrifices made for them by members of our Armed Forces.

There were many moving parts included in this year's Memorial Day Ceremony. The greater and more elaborate the production, the greater chance for errors and miscues. However, we sensed a need to orchestrate nothing less than a magnificent program for our audience and the Gold Star Father that was making our keynote address.

Words are inadequate in describing the beauty and majesty with which each and every part of this elegant mosaic fell breathtakingly into place. Graciously, David Kay, known to many as “Video,” livestreamed and recorded our event from start to finish.

USCG Islamorada Station provided us with an outstanding "Honor Guard.” They marched meticulously and performed flawlessly to open the ceremony. Susan Bazin and our Community Band played the National Anthem to near perfection. An extraordinary lady made a surprise visit and gloriously sung with our band.

Sheriff’s deputy Dave Campbell's bagpipe performance was absolutely awe-inspiring and breathtakingly magnificent. Coupled with a potent video, the stage was set for Gold Star Father David Wise. Mr. Wise's impeccable oration, describing the life and details of his son's death, caught the hearts and souls of the audience.

In conclusion, taps were played impeccably, note-perfect. Energy generated from this ceremony healed and changed lives. Thank you so much.

ver thought about running for school board, village council, county commissioner, a state seat or Congress? More than 20 people running for office or interested in a possible future run learned some of the campaign basics at a candidate “boot camp” on May 31 and June 1 at Founders Park Community Center. Organized by the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce, the boot camp was led by Kate DeLoach, lobbyist with The Southern Group; Audra Wallace, certified public accountant and founder of Tolley & Hill; and Jason Koler, publisher of Keys Weekly Newspapers and owner of Overseas Media Group. Attendees learned about the intricacies of campaign finance, campaign laws, the importance of community outreach, media relations and more.

Guest speakers included county commissioner and former state Rep. Holly Raschein and former Islamorada councilman and current state Rep. Jim Mooney. “I think it’s incredibly important to know why you’re running for office,” DeLoach told the group during opening remarks.” The chamber hopes to host another boot camp for interested candidates in the future.

onroe County officials, judges, sheriff’s deputies, constitutional officers and the public gathered at the new Plantation Key Government Center for a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on June 2. The state-of-the-art, 48,240-square-foot facility, which broke ground Oct. 18, 2019, houses the 16th Judicial Court of Florida, Monroe County Clerk of the Court, State Attorney’s office, Monroe County Sheriff’s substation and Monroe County Public Works. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office honor guard presented the colors, and the Florida Keys Community Concert Band played the national anthem. s Tropical Storm Alex churned in the Gulf of Mexico, five athletes from the elite Red Bull wakeboarding team ironed out final their Keys waterways advenfor details ture. Unfazed by the first storm of the ed 2022 hurricane season, the group arriv an in Key Largo for what was sure to be

epic adventure. n, "We brought a lot of equipment dow n we had two boats, two skis," said Bria eGrubb. Grubb is a two-time world wak st boarding champion and, at 41, the olde member of the team.

"It's kind of a lifestyle. We've been doing this since we were 10 years old," with said Grubb of competing and touring ed gniz friend Parks Bonifay. THIS WEEK’S DIVE REPORT Conditions were a little confused this past week.

We had a nice day for diving, a windy day and then the rains came through last weekend.

With the weather opening up this week, we were able to get our local Coral Shores High School marine science students certified. Obtaining the certification is part of the requirement for students within the marine science program so they can participate in numerous ERIC dive activities, such as coral restoration and marine BILLIPS debris cleanups, throughout the year. n the Upper Keys, people have come to associate Emma Haydocy’s name with environmental protection. Serving as Florida Bay Forever’s first full-time executive director since February 2020 (after joining in 2019 as support staff), she catapulted the organization to new levels of influence and impact. Now, she hopes to do the same in her new role, as Surfrider’s Florida policy manager.

“I am so grateful for my time with (Florida Bay Forever) and learned more than can be articulated in this interview,” Haydocy told the Weekly.

“Florida Bay Forever was a wonderful entry into Everglades policy and the environmental policy landscape in Florida, and truly sparked a passion to work specifically in conservation policy.”

Haydocy will now transition into full-time policy work. Despite this shift, she holds onto the lessons she’s learned from her time at the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce and then at Florida Bay Forever to inform her decisions.

“The biggest lesson I am taking with me is simply to remain flexible and adaptive in the wake of whatever the job throws your way.”

She explained how she took on her executive role a month before the Keys shut down due to the global pandemic. Any and all programming ideas, events, plans and fundraisers were thrown out the door. Rather than

give up, she and her small team pivoted – as many small organizations have done – in order to persevere.

“It has been challenging, but that flexibility (and the creativity it spurred) is what has led to the monumental success of the organization since then,” Haydocy said.

She takes this can-do attitude and her policy prowess into her new Surfride role. At its core, the purpose of her new role is to advance conservation of Florida’s coastal and ocean ecosystem by strategically engaging Surfrider's members, 12 Florida chapters, and other recreational users in policy initiatives, grassroots campaigns and community-based projects, she said.

Haydocy will operate with Surfrider’s four central policy areas that drive all of the organization’s work nationwide – coasts and climate, plastic pollution, clean water and ocean protection. The leader’s immediate goal is to engage Surfrider’s amazing grassroots network of chapters and volunteers to guide our state program's policy priorities.

“I have learned a lot since beginning my work in the Florida Keys nonprofit space, first at the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce and then with Florida Bay Forever. My biggest takeaway is that we have an amazing community of nonprofit staff, board members, donors, and supporters who are so passionate about their work and the well-being of our island chain,” she said.

Haydocy hopes to continue leveraging this passion and knowledge-base to help each Florida chapter of Surfrider tackle its unique challenges. She added, “One of Surfrider's greatest strengths is the local knowledge that comes from its chapter network, and it is so important for me to have an understanding of each chapter's unique waterways, challenges and needs to inform policy direction and strategy moving forward.”

For us here in the Keys, Haydocy identified “steep, complex challenges” for our environment and, by proxy, all our local communities and economy.

Because everything relies on and benefits from a healthy coral reef, its decline is worrisome. Add to that plastic pollution, a freshwater-starved Florida Bay and nutrient pollution in nearshore waters, and potential solutions can sometimes feel out of reach.

“It can be difficult to pinpoint one singular issue,” she said. “However, I believe that the threat multiplier that compounds all of the myriad issues facing the Florida Keys environment is climate change, which also stands to do the most harm to our built and human environment throughout our island chain.”

UNDERSTANDING THE HEALING POWER OF ACUPUNCTURE Shen Health can help with the pain

re you someone who’s dealing with pain? Stress? Allergies? Migraines? Keys Weekly recently sat down with Natalie Shea, licensed acupuncture therapist, to learn more about this ancient healing practice and how her business, Shen Health Acupuncture, can help you feel better.

I had wanted to be a veterinarian my whole life. So, I received my bachelor of science in veterinary medicine. My grandma was a 1:1 nurse in Cuba and the U.S., so I had an appreciation for personal care.

So, when acupuncture was suggested to me as a possible profession, I checked it out, and it was a better fit for me and how I could work with people.

I trained for four years to learn all the points on the body and the combinations and received my master’s. I also trained and learned a lot from a group of guys who worked with football teams, so my practice is very modern and up to date. In general, I love acupuncture because I get to work with who you are and your lifestyle to help you feel better.

Acupuncture dates back thousands of years ago. They found marks on people's bones, and they didn't have these little needles back then.

It'll be four years this August that I have been in my location in Tavernier on Wrenn Street. I am originally from Miami but moved to the Keys in September 2017 from Jupiter to be closer to my family.

Acupuncture is the primary service, but we also offer infrared sauna treatments, massage therapy and stretch therapy. The massage and deep tissue therapy is with Val Poulos. And our stretch therapist is Bernice Dionne, and she also teaches you how to stretch. Both independent therapists have many years of experience, and their treatments contribute to the body's natural healing.

The infrared sauna is amazing.

You can sit down and hang out for 30 to 45 minutes. It helps with muscle joints, weight loss as you burn calories, blood pressure, detoxing, and age-related issues.

However, it is mostly used for pain relief.

The sauna can get up to 140 degrees.

The dry heat of the sauna is very relaxing, and we recommend twice a week at least in the beginning. Then once a week after that. The time frame will vary until the person feels better — how bad is the injury? Is it chronic, aka long-lasting?

Or acute, aka shorter — less than six months?

The belief is that your body is strong enough to heal itself and acupuncture helps stimulate your natural healing process.

Every point has a function, and every combination has a different function. There are over 300 points depending on what system you use and what points determine the treatment. My practice uses the five elements acupuncture tradition, and I received my master’s and certificate of Chinese herbal medicine from the Academy of Five Elements in Gainesville.

Shen Health Acupuncture's specialty is orthopedic — muscles, joint pain, muscle function, range of motion, etc. More specifically — wrist pain, knee, hip, low back, neck pain, rotator cuff. Any of these issues pre-surgery or post-surgery. And it works well in combination with physical therapy, massage, stretch and the infrared sauna. My theory is that it's like going to the gym; each treatment works on the one beforehand.

In addition to orthopedic treatments, acupuncture can treat anxiety, mental health, allergies, migraines, and help with pregnancy, PTSD and also children. I like to treat mental health as acupuncture helps stimulate serotonin and endorphins. When something is happening in your body, it's because it's out of balance. When you put a needle in a person's body, the brain says something is happening here. Acupuncture helps with your natural balance.

Many people ask me, "What's an appointment like?" First, I check to see their range of motion, and then we set a plan.

We focus on the pain part and determine the level of pain. The treatment depends on what you're coming to get treated for.

It's best to realize it may be uncomfortable, but likely you are already in pain, so it's just uncomfortable. It's relatively quick; the maximum time for the needles is maybe 20-30 minutes. The channels are all connected — so depending on what's being treated is where the needle goes.

We may start with needles in different areas and then go from there with rest in between. The entire treatment is about an hour.

I give people a choice as to what I think will help them, and I explain the benefits. For example, if someone has an issue with their rotator cuff, it can take a while but help tremendously. And plantar fasciitis is the most complicated, but it's so rewarding if they stick to the treatments.

Knees are another area I can help with, especially if they are not a candidate for surgery or cortisone. We won't get to 100%, but we can get some relief. It's also rewarding to know I can help them with that.

The positive part of what I do is that I love it and enjoy helping people. But the biggest challenge is I can't fix everyone; people have to do their part, and people want a quick fix. There is also a lot of plateauing. It's important to take care of yourself and maintenance is essential.

Typically, nothing needs to happen during a tropical storm or Category 1 hurricane.

If a Category 2 or higher hurricane were to head our way, mom would prepare by bringing us inside initially and monitor the storm track/strength, and based on that, make the decision whether to evacuate.

During this time of year, mom relies heavily on receiving items from our hurricane wishlist as well as any added monetary donations people are generous enough to give. This is because if any of our enclosures were to be damaged during the storm, we would have to act quickly to get them repaired.

Phoenix is a male terrier/shepherd mix. The 3-year-old is gentle, well-mannered and affectionate. He is incredibly smart. He is well-trained and learns quickly.

Phoenix loves to play with other dogs and would be great with other pets to keep him company. He is pretty good with cats, but he might try to play or chase them at first. Phoenix had some kind of trauma to his back end at some point and while he does go potty outside normally, when he is inside for long periods he occasionally has very minor fecal incontinence. The foster keeps a diaper on him when she leaves the house and overnight, but says it is not even a daily issue.

ue to the success of its annual February event, the Upper Keys Rotary will provide $234,000 for the upper-level academic education of students in the Upper Florida Keys for the 2022-23 year.

Awards to the graduating seniors and existing college students total $154,000. This includes scholarships from the Landau Family Trust and a partnership between Rotary and Mariners Hospital. More than 90 applications were received from both groups.

The total scholarship amount awarded also includes a donation of $40,000 to the Take Stock in Children program, which is matched by the not-for-profit Monroe County Education Foundation, as well as $40,000 to Key Largo Rotary to award additional scholarships given for work during the Nautical Flea Market.

Scholarship amounts ranged from $500 to $5,000.

“The success of the annual Gigantic Nautical Flea Market is a direct result of total financial support awarded in scholarships,” said Frank Derfler, Rotary board member and scholarship committee co-chair. “That one weekend in February allows us to provide this level of support to our local kids who also volunteer at the event.”

All scholarship recipients complete an extensive application including a video; they are reviewed for merit, need and community service by the scholarship committee. In addition, graduating seniors sit for a live interview.

Throughout the year, Upper Keys Rotary makes available its application specific for those seeking certifications in a variety of fields including marine mechanics, emergency medical technician or mortgage lending. This application can be found at www.KeysRotary.org.

Bob’s Bunz finds a new spot in Islamorada JIM McCARTHY

earing his apron and chef’s cap, Bob Spencer looks around inside the new Bob’s Bunz Islamorada Restaurant and Bakery at MM 81, oceanside, in Islamorada.

Inside the restaurant, Spencer marries his passions for baking and singing. On one side is the kitchen, seating and glass pastry case with sticky buns and cinnamon rolls, among other delicious food items. The other side has a stage with Bob’s collection of guitars, a drum set and other musical equipment for live entertainment.

A native of Philadelphia, the pastry chef said he’s worked for the better part of a year to bring the new Bob’s Bunz to the former Heartbreakers.

“I love to bake and I love the restaurant business, but I also love to sing,” Spencer said. “I may not be a musician or know how to play anything, but God blessed me with a good voice.”

Spencer’s taste for baking began during his days in Philadelphia when he entered a men’s bake-off at his local church. He later graduated from The Restaurant School in Philadelphia with a degree as pastry chef. He spent some time as an assistant pastry chef at Longwood Gardens – a mansion once owned by the du Pont family – which eventually became a horticulture garden and tourist destination.

In the early 1990s, Spencer saw a job posting at Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. He was head baker there for a year before moving on to the bakery department at Publix in Key Largo.

“I went from counter person to donut fryer, oven person, bread person and cake decorator,” Spencer said.

Spencer moved to Key West to open the new Publix supermarket as bakery manager. He was there for three years before moving on to become a line cook at the Hilton and Reverend Joe’s in Key West. It was there he learned how to cook breakfast.

“I learned how to flip omelets and make eggs to different temperatures,” he said. “But I still wanted to be in the bakery. I called a friend at Publix in Key Largo to see if there was an opening.

She said ‘yes.’ I wanted to get out of Key West, so I took a job at Publix in Key Largo.”

Spencer eventually went back to baker, this time at Islamorada Restaurant & Bakery. That led to an opportunity Spencer couldn’t pass on in 2002, when he bought The Islamorada Restaurant and Bakery, now known as Bob’s Bunz.

“It didn’t feel real to me that I actually owned it,” Spencer said. “It took me a while to change things on the menu.”

Serving breakfast and lunch, Bob’s Bunz features a selection of delicious pastries, from cinnamon rolls to sticky buns. The menu includes everything from apple pie French toast and breakfast sandwiches to strawberry cheesecake waffle and a cheese omelet.

“I was trained in classic French, but I gravitated more toward American style things,” Spencer said. “It’s bigger, it’s more butter and it's more sugar.

When you come to Bob’s Bunz, expect to get sugared up, creamed up and buttered up.”

With his love for the restaurant business also comes a passion for cake decorating. Spencer’s greatest artistic expression comes from creating special wedding cakes for a happy bride.

Local residents and visitors coming to the new Bob’s Bunz can soon expect some live entertainment on the stage inside Bob’s Bunz during evenings from Wednesday through Sunday. It’s headed up by Spencer and Hedy Menendez.

“It’s going to allow all musicians to come by and rock out,” Spencer said.

More than anything, Spencer said he enjoys employing people. And workers love working for him.

“I’ve worked at a lot of places where you see the owner every now and then. Bob’s here all the time,” said Destani Adams, who serves at the restaurant. “He’s Bob the baker and Bob the cook.”

“He’s just an amazing boss all the way around,” said Ashley Marvin, general manager.
