FOOD FIGHT ENSUES Rebman Lopez criticizes Mooney for supporting strawberry shortcake as official dessert JIM McCARTHY
jim@keysweekly.com
A
Republican candidate for state representative is criticizing current Rep. Jim Mooney’s vote supporting strawberry shortcake as Florida’s official state dessert. Mooney said he finds the latest attack by his opponent to be “eighthgrade material.” A June 2 Facebook post showed Rhonda Rebman Lopez holding up a Key lime pie. Within the post, Rebman Lopez states that her opponent voted for strawberry shortcake as the state’s official dessert and not Key lime pie. Early into the legislative session, senators and representatives in the House passed a bill declaring strawberry shortcake the state’s official dessert. The Senate version, SB 1006, was sponsored by Sen. Danny Burgess. He represents Plant City, which has 10,000-plus acres of strawberry fields. According to his bill, those fields make up 75 percent of the U.S. winter strawberry crop. Senators unanimously said “yes” to the bill. The House followed up with a 109-4 vote. Rebman Lopez told Keys Weekly that she was called into a meeting by some longtime residents of Key West. She said they were “disturbed that he didn’t fight for Key lime pie to remain the state dessert.” “Key lime pie is one of our own. No matter what happens, we have to defend Key lime pie. Key lime pie is a catalyst for our economy,” she said. “Do you know how many people come to the Keys and expect to eat Key lime pie? And do you know how many stores sell Key lime pie? “For our current representative to try to be everyone’s friend and say strawberries are a huge industry in Florida, we all know that. There’s a lot of huge industries in Florida. But Key lime pie is the Florida Keys,” she continued. Mooney, who was among the 109 “yes” votes, said the Key lime pie was

never an issue in Tallahassee. The strawberry farmers, who represent a $5-billion-a-year industry, asked for strawberry shortcake to be a dessert. “The whole thing was I didn’t vote against the Key lime pie. I voted to make the strawberry shortcake a dessert in the state of Florida. And Key lime pie is still the pie of the state of Florida,” Mooney said. “Of course Key lime is still the best dessert on the menu.” During the session, the Conch Republic Key Lime Pie Council sent out a petition on change.org that urged the legislature to declare strawberry shortcake as the state’s official cake and Key lime pie the official pie. It garnered 7,131 votes. “Together they can share the limelight as Florida’s official desserts,” read a proposed resolution by Key West’s David Sloan, Paul Menta and Sam Kaufman. A staple within the Keys dining scene and throughout the Florida dessert menu, the pie still holds the title as the state’s official pie. Mooney added that he’s more concerned about rising insurance rates and other matters that are affecting the lives of Monroe County residents. “I try to stay focused on what matters to the constituents, not the media,” he said. “What matters to constituents is insurance rates are blowing up. In Monroe County, what matters is 2023. And she doesn’t have answers for that.”
Mooney and Rebman Lopez are vying for the Republican nod heading into the November general election. Mooney, Rebman Lopez and Alexandria Suarez, who’s running for a school board seat against Sue Woltanski this year, competed in a fiery 2020 primary that saw attack mailers and text messages. Mooney edged out Rebman Lopez by 148 votes to win the primary. He went on to defeat Democrat Clint Barras in the November 2020 election. Monetary campaign contributions to Rebman Lopez total $52,685, while Mooney’s campaign has $157,493.20. They’re joined by Big Pine resident Robert Allen, who filed last December. Contributions to his campaign total $150. Mooney is endorsed by several Republican leaders in Tallahassee. They include Paul Renner, incoming speaker of the Florida House; Danny Perez, speaker of the House in 2024; and Sam Garrison, speaker of the House in 2026. “Certainly, having the speaker of the house and house Republican leadership behind me says a lot,” he said. “That means a lot to me and it should mean a lot to the people of the district who understand that politics are not cut and dry. It’s not always an easy path. At the end of the day, there’s a reason why leadership endorsed me. It's because I do a good job representing my district.” Rebman Lopez, who announced her run on April 4, has secured an endorsement from the Republican Liberty Caucus of Florida. She said she continues to listen to the district’s needs and intends on delivering on those needs if elected. “Homestead and Redland got shafted badly. Some of our largest farms in the country are in Redland,” she said. “Ninety percent of farming in winter comes out of South Florida. Homestead is the largest city in District 120.” Lawyer and Big Coppitt resident Adam Gentle and Cutler Bay resident Daniel Horton-Diaz are vying for the Democratic nod. Primaries are set for Aug. 23.

DESANTIS SLASHES $3 BILLION IN BUDGET KEYS FUNDING INTACT, BUT MOONEY’S FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAM CUT
Staff from Monroe County’s Take Stock in Children program gather for lunch to celebrate Katrina Wiatt’s accomplishments and retirement. From left: executive director Chuck Licis, success coach Lyne Casamayor, Wiatt, success coach Autumn Hager, success coach Maddie Opalsky. ALEX RICKERT/Keys Weekly
TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN MAINSTAY KATRINA WIATT RETIRES
Program bids farewell to legendary success coach ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com
T
ake Stock in Children will say a fond farewell to more than its graduating seniors this year, as longtime Marathon success coach Katrina Wiatt will retire after 12 years with the organization. Originally serving as a member of the Monroe County Education Foundation board, Wiatt was approached to join the organization in 2010 by then-program manager Jim Hall as Take Stock prepared to undergo organizational changes. Upon receiving an Investing in Innovation (i3) grant, Take Stock was looking to evolve and turn its vision beyond just high school graduation and dropout prevention in order to focus on college readiness. “My son had just graduated from high school,” said Wiatt. “I said, ‘Well, if it’s part-time and I can get health insurance, sure!’” Working in Marathon, Wiatt is largely credited with developing the role of Monroe County’s Take Stock “success coaches.” As opposed to other areas, in which Take Stock coaches work from a single office and visit schools to work with program participants, the Keys’ school-based program has installed coaches at each of the island chain’s public high schools to manage recruitment, matching and monitoring of students and mentors. According to her fellow coaches, Wiatt’s knowledge of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), her organizational skills and her detailed emails have become legend within Take Stock, to the point where she has become an unofficial mentor for those holding her same post in other schools. “For me, she’s my go-to,” said Key West coach Lynne Casamayor. “If there’s something that I believe in, if I can get Katrina to believe with me, I’m good. She will back you if she believes
in it, and she’ll go ahead of you to make it happen.” “When I have any kind of issue or concern, I lean on her because she’s got the most knowledge out of our crew,” said Coral Shores coach Autumn Hager, noting that she often saves copies of Wiatt’s emails to students and mentors as templates for thorough and efficient communication. “I’ll call her and say, ‘Hey, I’ve got this going on.’ She’ll have an answer for me, and it’s always correct. She’ll tell you exactly how to make it happen.” “We do a lot of investigating in student recruitment to make sure that they are truly economically eligible, and Katrina is our go-to person when we start looking through taxes and investigating to make sure that students are truthful in their applications. I consider myself pretty detail-oriented, and I’m nothing, a novice compared to Katrina when it comes to details,” said Take Stock executive director Chuck Licis, noting that whoever assumes Wiatt’s position has monumental shoes to fill. “I’d be happy with even 75% of what Katrina gave us,” he laughed. Wiatt now intends to split her time between the Keys and her family’s cabin under construction in British Columbia. But she won’t be cutting ties with Take Stock completely, pledging her continued support as a volunteer student mentor. “The most rewarding part of the program has been being able to keep in touch with those kids that came in, graduated high school, went to college and went into the work world, but are still in touch with me in a variety of different ways,” she said. “Some of them were kids that everything went totally successfully, and some of them were kids that it didn’t. They've made their way one way or another on different paths, but even if it was in a zigzag, they always say that the program was what helped them get to where they are.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis announces $14 million in the budget to combat red tide in Florida during a May 7 press conference in Clearwater. GOVERNOR’S OFFICE/Contributed

$112.1-billion budget approved by the Florida House and Senate earlier in the year was slashed some $3 billion by Gov. Ron DeSantis. While funding for the Keys remained in the budget, the governor slashed an appropriation sponsored by state Rep. Jim Mooney and approved by the legislature for a first responder behavioral intervention pilot program. On June 3, DeSantis signed a budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year totaling $109.9 billion. An $11.7-billion investment in highways and bridges, $800 million for teacher raises, $500 for Everglades restoration and more than $733 million to protect waters and prized properties were among items included in the budget. “Florida has preserved freedom and kept the economy open, which has enabled the state to outperform the nation in jobs, growth, and business formations,” DeSantis said. “Our commitment to freedom has paid off.” A $1 billion inflation fund to deal with cost increases for state contracts due to inflation was cut by the governor. In his veto message, DeSantis said the fund, House Bill 5011, could exacerbate inflation by promising more public sector funds to pay more for supplies of materials. “It also reduces the need for state agencies to make tough decisions with the funds already appropriated,” DeSantis wrote. Other items slashed were a 4,500-bed prison totaling $645 million, a new correctional hospital totaling $195 million, a new spring training facility for the Tampa Bay Rays totaling $25 million and $2.5 million for an
opioid prevention program through the Florida Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs. A proposal for the purchase of two new aircraft totaling $31.3 million for use by more than 100 government officials throughout the year was also slashed by DeSantis. “This is an inadvisable expense, especially under current economic conditions,” he said. A smaller $750,000 appropriation request by Mooney sought to create a pilot project by equipping three sheriff’s offices with antidote equipment, training and access to telemedicine to help treat patients who present mental and behavioral health issues. Officers and deputies would get a simple, powerful tool to access clinicians to help de-escalate a situation or divert the person to more appropriate treatment options. Goals included creating safe communities, less taxpayer drainage due to fewer incarcerations and more productive and contributing citizens. “If the subject accepts, he/she will be immediately connected to a licensed clinician for immediate treatment. A clinician will then decide the next best course of action including best next steps,” the request read. Mooney said the legislation aimed to not only prevent a disaster or unnecessary death, but also to get people to the right treatment options instead of being locked behind bars. “The idea was to try and make things happen across the board in a smoother way,” he said. Roughly $51 million for Keys projects remained in the budget signed by DeSantis. Among the items included were $20 million for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, $5 million for land acquisition and $20 million to replace aging water transmission lines.

SHERIFF RAMSAY ON GUN LAWS, UVALDE, ACCOUNTABILITY ‘I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR OFFICERS WHO FAILED TO ACT’
S
heriff Rick Ramsay has spent more than 30 years as a law enforcement officer in the Florida Keys, and the past decade as the county’s sheriff. The most decorated deputy in the history of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Ramsay is proficient with firearms and knowledgeable about gun ownership. Following the “heinous” mass shooting that killed 19 little kids and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, Ramsay spoke at length with the Keys Weekly about gun laws, school security and mass shootings in America. Ramsay is In close contact with Monroe County School District officials regarding “hardening” efforts to improve security at Florida Keys schools. As reported by the Keys Weekly last week, he has urged the district to invest in enhanced fencing around schools rather than 6-foot chain link fences that can easily be scaled by the 15- to 19-year-old males who typically commit school shootings. But fences aren’t foolproof and Ramsay had plenty to say about the Uvalde devastation, gun laws, background checks, video games, mental illness and parental involvement. SHERIFF ON GUN LAWS “Here in Florida, I can go buy an AR-15 legally. I go through the legal process, the background check. The state knows I have it. But then I can sell it to absolutely anyone. No waiting period. No background check. No knowledge of the person’s mental health history.
“The easy answer is to take everyone’s guns away, but such laws are only followed by lawful people. “I’m completely in favor of a 10-day waiting period and a minimum age of 21 to get an assault rifle. I’m also in favor of more intensive background checks, and of closing the loophole that allows anyone — no background check or waiting period — to buy an assault rifle at a gun show or from a private seller.”
“I’m all about looking at all factors on all levels, including waiting periods, background checks, closing loopholes and raising the age to 21 for assault weapons.” — Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay
“Almost every one of these heinous events has been preceded by red flags. I’m very concerned about the confidential nature of these threats and prior investigations into someone’s mental illness. So no one ever knows until something horrible happens. All that information comes after someone has already committed a devastating act. “We have to have a better ability to identify mental illness so we can do realistic threat assessments. “There’s a lot we can do, but unfortunately, it’s become so politicized that we can’t resolve what’s in the best interest of kids and public safety. I’m all about looking at all factors on all levels, including waiting periods, background checks, closing loopholes, and raising the age to 21 for assault weapons.”
SHERIFF ON UVALDE MISTAKES “It killed me seeing those officers outside an elementary school arguing with and handcuffing parents for no lawful reason. Any parent is going to risk their life to save their kid. I have no sympathy for those officers who failed to act. It was horrific and paints a bad image. The chief made a terrible decision. There was poor leadership from the top. That chief should have been fired immediately, or at the very least, suspended without pay pending an investigation and THEN fired. Every officer who failed to act should have action taken against them. They’re not expected to comply with unlawful orders from a superior. And the order to do nothing was not a lawful order.” SHERIFF ON PARENTS, KIDS, VIDEO GAMES “There’s been a collapse in the family structure. Kids are turning into loners with no social skills and no responsibility. “We need some type of age restrictions or censorship on violent video games that teach kids to aim and shoot guns and take a life without giving it a second thought. “Parents need to be more accountable, more involved and more aware. They need to ask questions and should be cloning their kids’ phones and computers to see what they surf, post and who they talk to. The kid doesn’t like it? Too bad. The parents are paying for the phones. “Back in the ’80s, kids would rather have the police called on them than their parents, who would be embarrassed to have to come to the police station when the kid screwed up. Today, the parents get mad at law enforcement and threaten to sue us. They reinforce bad behavior and assure their kid that mom and dad will fix it and that nothing is ever the kid’s fault. “So many kids today have no real curfews, social skills or responsibility. Every time we see these breakdowns in family structure, there’s red flags involved. Mental illness and bullying are too often a problem, and parents have to give us this information when they see these red flags. “We all have to start rowing in the same direction if we’re going to make any meaningful changes.”

F
or the 23rd year in a row, teams of paddlers and cyclers who some might call “just a little bit crazy” will make grueling 160and 170-mile treks, respectively, from Miami to Key West as the Castaways Against Cancer continue their fight to combat the deadly disease. Begun by a “group of four seahippies” in 2000, this year’s voyage – dubbed the “Carry On Tour” in the organization’s tradition of naming each unique trip – aims to raise significant funds for the disease with an ever-elusive cure. Beginning in Miami’s Virginia Key on Saturday, June 11, the paddling crew will take seven days to trek 160 miles all the way down to Key West’s Simonton Beach by Friday, June 17. On that same Friday, a team of cyclists will complete the most similar route possible by land – 175 miles, all in one day. With their funds originally donated to the American Cancer Society, the nonprofit group made a switch in 2020, directing funds to support research at the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Two years later, the strength of the partnership spurred the organization to announce a five-year, $1.5 million pledge to the research institute on World Cancer Day in February 2022, a promise the University of Miami itself agreed to match 50 cents on the dollar. For the Castaways, an ability to communicate directly with the principal investigators and see the direct impacts of their funds drove the switch to Sylvester. The facility is one of only two in Florida and 71 nationwide recognized by the National Cancer Institute as NCI-Designated Cancer Centers for their transdisciplinary, state-of-the-art approaches to cancer research and treatments. “The beauty of this partnership is that the doctors come back to them and say, ‘This is what your $200,000 did this year,’” said Jackie Suarez, the organization’s communications volun-

teer lead. “This group is really passionate about seeing that all their money actually goes somewhere.” Among the projects funded by the athletes and their supporters in the last two years were an early cancer detection clinic, studies identifying effective treatments for pediatric brain tumors, and research to identify and understand the molecular mechanisms that cause resistance to lymphoma therapies. Breast cancer survivor Suzy Curry is one of the team’s few Keys paddlers and is aptly named the “Mayor of the Keys” on the Castaways website. As the former owner of Stout’s Restaurant in Marathon, Curry was roped into the team after making her famous banana pudding for the paddlers to enjoy when they made a pit stop at Sombrero Beach. After retiring in 2014, she began completing larger portions of the trip with the paddlers each year and eventually completed the entire voyage in 2017 – only the second woman to accomplish the feat. Even today, she
still joins in for “just” the 110-mile Keys portion of the paddle. “What I’ve always told people is that it’s not like we just say ‘Here, give me money,’” said Curry. “We’re actually going out and doing something.” She recalled nights of camping on islands too thick with mosquitoes for the paddlers to talk with their mouths open, as well as the eerie feeling of venturing offshore and dodging lightning storms in a kayak for the 50-mile two-day portion at the beginning of the route. “Believe me, it’s brutal,” she reiterated. Donations to the paddlers’ epic efforts can be made through the “Donate Now” tab at www.castawaysagainstcancer.org. The “Events” tab on the page also includes some of the trip’s major landings and celebrations, from the kayak launch on June 11 to the Carry On Tour’s closing ceremonies and celebration in Key West on June 17. The events are open to the public, and supporters are encouraged to attend in order to welcome and celebrate with the athletes.

KEYS COMMUNITY RALLIES BEHIND AHEC’S BUDGET SHORTFALL Nonprofit has made up nearly all of $650,000 funding request ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com
O
n March 14, when the Florida state legislature passed a record-high $112.1 billion budget, Keys Area Health Education Center (AHEC) officials were devastated to learn that the spending plan did not include the $650,000 requested for the organization in order to provide medical and dental care to vulnerable Keys children in low- and moderate-income families. Though it received significant funding for the last eight years — $500,000 for the 2021-2022 fiscal year — not a dime would come to the organization from the state level in 2022-2023. “I literally don’t know what we’re going to do,” Michael Cunningham, AHEC CEO, told Keys Weekly upon learning the news. But less than 90 days later, Cunningham says local governments and community organizations have answered the call for AHEC, with donations and commitments currently covering all but $20,000 of the agency’s original request to the state. “It really was a daunting task to have to take on … but the community really came together,” said Cunningham. “There were multiple entities and individuals who reached out to us and helped with the process, whether it was directing us to specific foundations with specific assets or making introductions to individuals and other entities that we didn’t have a relationship with in the past.” Though some commitments have yet to be fully finalized, AHEC’s tally currently includes: $100,000 from the Ocean Reef Community Foundation, with a $50,000 gift and another $50,000 requiring matching donations; another $100,000 grant obtained through the same foundation requiring a match; a $25,000 donation from the Ocean Reef Children’s Foundation; a $200,000 donation from the Edward B. and Joan T. Knight Foundation; a $25,000 donation from insurer Florida Blue; a $50,000 donation from Baptist Health South Florida; two $10,000 donations from the Key West Noon Time and Marathon Rotary Clubs; and a $9,500 donation from United Way of Collier County. Other commitments from the Monroe County School District, the cities of Key West and Marathon, and the Village of Islamorada are in the works. AHEC provides services to children during school hours including, but not

limited to, yearly physical exams, COVID-19 testing, sick and wellness visits, treatment for minor injuries, and vision and hearing tests and prescriptions. In January, the nonprofit partnered with the Waypoint Foundation and the Smile Maker program to add a state-of-the-art mobile dental van and serve all areas of the Keys on a rotating schedule. According to Cunningham, much of AHEC’s offerings would have been temporarily axed if community partners hadn’t stepped up. “With a $650,000 loss, that would have been roughly 60% of our funds,” he said. “We would have had to close about a third of our health centers and eliminate the dental program altogether. Having this support gives us a full budget, which means that we’ll be able to keep all centers open and be able to run our full dental program throughout next year.” While the appropriations bill for AHEC was filed by state Rep. Jim Mooney in November 2021 and reported favorably out of the House Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee on Jan. 18, the organization has yet to receive a solid answer as to why the longtime funding request didn’t make it to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis. But looking forward, Cunningham said conversations with state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez and Mooney have been encouraging, with AHEC moving up the list as a “renewed priority” for the next year. In addition, AHEC has secured a new lobbying firm, moving on from lobbyists at Metz, Husband & Daughton in favor of Johnston & Stewart Government Strategies. “I think with a new lobbying firm, we’re going to be very active with our local legislators as well as those on the Appropriations Committee, more so than we have been in the past,” said Cunningham. “It will include multiple visits to those

individuals and offices throughout the legislative calendar. … We should have their full attention next year.” Offering special thanks to Uri Mikolay of the Ocean Reef Community Foundation, the Knight Foundation, Baptist Health and local municipalities, Cunningham said that while he is hesitant to see a silver lining in a major budget shortfall, the organization is beyond grateful for the new sources of community support. “This will be something that we look back on and we learned from,” he said. “Certainly the new relationships and people understanding what we do and the importance of it, that was one of the positives that came out of the situation.”

BRIDGE JUMP, PERMIT WAIT TIMES ON DECK FOR CITY COUNCIL Monthly meeting will also revisit boat ramp fees, vacation rental code enforcement ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com
T
he Marathon City Council will convene for its next public meeting on Tuesday, June 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Marathon City Hall. All interested persons are welcome to attend. A host of familiar topics of interest to Marathon residents are slated for discussion, including: • A request by Hoonigan Industries to jump a car over the open portion of the Boot Key Harbor Bridge. Originally proposed in January 2022, the request to the city was denied by staff due in part to improper planning and permitting, liability concerns and questions about the structural integrity of the bridge under the stress of such a jump. The council will revisit the possibility and logistics of permitting the stunt. • A proposed $30,000 pledge to support Keys AHEC, an organization left severely underfunded when its request for $650,000 to help with health and dental care for vulnerable Keys children was left out of the state budget. • A proposed fee schedule for the use of Marathon’s public boat ramps. Discussions of the fees at past meetings revolved around per-use launch and parking fees for visitors, while residents would continue to use the ramps for free or pay a smaller yearly fee for unlimited use. • An update from city attorney Steve Williams on the city’s status with the Department of Economic Opportunity. Although the city and state signed a new Memorandum of Understanding on May 11 to narrow and specify permits and planning approvals that must be sent to the state for approval, the two entities intend to work to streamline the process further. There are options available for the city to shorten its wait time for permits, including decreasing its permit appeal period from 30 days to 5 days. An ordinance amending this appeal period is scheduled for public hearing. • An update on options for software used to identify and cite illegal Marathon vacation rentals advertised online.
MARATHON • In family-oriented Marathon, the free-admission Sombrero Beach is the site of one of the Keys’ largest and longest fireworks displays, produced by the city of Marathon and the Rotary Club of Marathon. Spectators on land and hundreds of boaters traditionally line up for colorful views of the fiery dazzlers. Families can gather Monday, July 4, for a full day of beachside activities beginning with a 10:30 a.m. patriotic parade that follows a route from Marathon High School on Sombrero Beach Road, MM 50 oceanside, to Sombrero Beach. The all-day celebration includes food, cold drinks and family entertainment. Visit floridakeysmarathon.com or call 305-743-5417. KEY WEST • The Key Lime Festival features culinary and libation adventures Thursday, June 30, through Monday, July 4, showcasing the tiny fruit that inspired Key lime pie, the Florida Keys’ signature dessert. The mouthwatering Key Lime Pie Eating Championship, the festival highlight, is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 4, at the oceanfront Southernmost Beach Cafe at 1405 Duval St. Participants with their hands behind their backs must dive in face-first to devour an entire 9-inch Key lime pie faster than their rivals. The event is free for spectators and gates open at 12:30 p.m. Visit keylimefestival.com. • Mermaids in red, white and blue finery are expected to appear at the “4th of July Mermaid Splash” event, set for 10. a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lagerheads Beach Bar, a favorite spot at 0 Simonton Street. The shallow beach is perfect for a day of sandcastle building or relaxing with mermaids in the Key West sun. Admission is free, but tickets to swim with the mermaids must be purchased. The fun is part of the Key West Mermaid Festival planned for Friday through Tuesday, July 1-5, in the island city. The family-friendly festival features interactive mermaid adventures while raising awareness about oceans and salty shores. Events include mermaid meet-ups, swim encounters with the festival's mermaid pod, ocean-themed parties and a weekend mermaid- and ocean-inspired marketplace at Truman Waterfront Park. A portion of festival proceeds will benefit Reef Relief's efforts to protect the coral
reef ecosystem. Visit keywestmermaidfestival.com. • Since 1976, the Rotary Club of Key West has presented the island’s annual fireworks show. Staged from the Edward B. Knight Pier overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at 1800 White St., fireworks are to begin at 9 p.m. Monday, July 4. Attendees can purchase drinks and food, including burgers and hot dogs, at a booth across from the pier on Atlantic Avenue, with proceeds to benefit the Rotary Club’s scholarship fund. There will also be a celebration before the fireworks at a catered, ticketed “Patriotic Dinner under the Fireworks” on the pier at 7 p.m. Dinner proceeds will benefit the Rotary scholarship fund as well. Visit keywestrotary.com. BIG PINE & THE LOWER KEYS • The Lower Keys Rotary Club will host Independence Day festivities starting at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 3, at Big Pine Community Park, MM 31. Attractions include vendors, food, beverages, games, family activities and entertainment. Fireworks are scheduled to begin around 9 p.m. Admission is free but coolers, pets and personal fireworks are not allowed. Visit facebook. com/LowerKeysRotary or call 303-5010233. UPPER KEYS • The Upper Keys Rotary Club and the Village of Islamorada will co-host the Independence Day Celebration at Founders Park, MM 87, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, July 4. Fireworks are to begin at dark. Food and drinks can be purchased from vendors and live entertainment is planned for the family-friendly evening. On-site parking will be available for a suggested donation of $10 per vehicle. Proceeds benefit the Upper Keys Rotary Foundation. No coolers or outside food are permitted, but attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. Visit islamoradachamber.com or call 305-664-4503. • The Key Largo Chamber of Commerce will host the annual “Celebrating Freedom” July 4 parade from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m., to begin at mile marker 98.2 in front of Anthony’s Clothing Store. • At about 9:30 p.m., the annual bayfront Blackwater Sound fireworks celebration will be held at Rowell’s Waterfront Park, mile marker 104.5. The dazzling display of shimmering lights is to be provided by the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Visit web.keylargochamber.org/ events or call 305-451-1414 for more details.

The only bird I’d seen was a magnificent frigatebird hanging motionless over West Martello like some kind of detached light fixture. It’s possible I’d seen a gull or a pigeon but just edited it out of my consciousness. Across the street, at the foot of the FAA tower, the grass was flooded and a mishmash of birds was trying to make up for whatever calories they’d missed during the storm – two dozen starling, a dozen cattle egrets, half-a-dozen white ibis, a snowy egret, a great egret, a grab bag of doves. Gray kingbirds made sorties off the barbed wire. Northern mockingbirds stood around and tried to yell at everyone. Seeking a little shade, I drove down to the swale just outside of Indigenous Park on Stevens Avenue. Most of the year it’s just a weedy little indent in the ground, but when the rains come, it tends to fill up and can occasionally attract a good bird or two. I thought maybe there was a chance for a teal or a spoonbill or something. I started to open the door but then stopped. There was a yellow-crowned night-heron standing stock still less than 10 feet from the car. Yellow-crowned night-herons are some of the more common birds in the backcountry, but you do see them around Key West occasionally, generally in places where the ground is soft and there’s a good bit of shade. Yellow-crowned night-herons are about a foot tall and have short necks, as herons go, and thicker, more solid-looking bills. They can be very striking in a muted color palette kind of way, a trim gray with a black head, a bold white slash under each eye, the nominate yellow crown, and, at the right time of year, long feathers that hang off the back of their head like tally ribbons on an old timey sailor’s cap. This one, though, was a juvenile, brown with flecks of gray and white in a pattern that made it look dull and tweedy. The bird was watching me, but not moving. It was hard to say if it wasn’t moving because it saw me or because it was just doing what it was going to do anyhow. Yellow-crowned night-herons are
MARK HEDDEN
some of the lowest-energy hunters out there. People who have studied them showed that, while they hunt, they can spend more than three-quarters of their time in “stand and wait” mode, a fifth of their time “peering,” and the rest in “walk slow” mode. It works for them. They don’t dig the crabs or other crustaceans out of the mud. They find the appropriate habitat – usually within three meters of water – become part of the scenery and wait for their prey to move into their proximity. They are so good at this that when the closely related Bermuda night-heron went extinct – most likely due to heavy human inhabitation – Bermuda became so overrun with crabs that it was difficult to walk anywhere without crunching on crustaceans. They had to import yellow-crowned night-herons to restore the ecological balance. Adult yellow-crowns have red eyes, but this juvenile’s were more of an amber-orange, which jibed with the earthy tones of its plumage. And I was curious what that eye led it to comprehend. Cars can work as blinds. The birds no doubt see you, but they often don’t consider you a threat until you open the door. Sight is a bird’s strongest sense. Their eyes are the largest, proportional to body size, of any land vertebrate. And whereas human eyes tend to have about 200,000 receptors per millimeter, birds can have between 400,000 and 1 million per millimeter. And their brains are built to process that information quickly. Also, where humans have eyes on the front of their head and typically have about a 120-degree visual field, birds’ eyes are generally on the sides of their heads, and can have a much wider field of view. (The American woodcock has a full 360-degree field of vision.) My optical standoff with the yellow-crown lasted a few minutes. Then the bird seemed to make a decision. It silently turned and without fanfare shifted from stand-and-wait mode to walkslow mode. I thought it brave to turn its back on me like that, especially as it was declining to hurry. But then I lifted my camera to take a few shots, and through the long lens could see the nightheron wasn’t fully 90 degrees facing away from me, but about 85 degrees. And I could see the broad convex arc of its eye curving out from the side of its head. Meaning it could still see me. I waited until he stepped behind a rock and the visual link between us was broken, then I put the car into gear and slowly drove on.

hether it’s the ketogenic diet, incorporating more whole foods or going completely plant-based, the key to any successful healthy eating and weight loss strategy requires some planning ahead, a few good accountability partners and a written commitment to yourself and better health. What are your health goals? Do you want to lose weight? Reduce medications? Exercise pain-free? Being crystal clear about your health goals will empower you to celebrate your little victories as well as your big wins on your journey to better health. When it comes to meal prep and planning, many are hesitant to start, thinking they’ll need to devote hours to the process. While healthy eating does require a time commitment, it may not be as much as most would believe. Below are some tips to make the process less of a chore. Buy in bulk and pre-marinate proteins Do yourself a favor and explore the possibility of bulk buying your proteins from a buying club, subscribing to a meat delivery service like Butcher
TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS: Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail
Prep options that work with your family’s schedule and decrease cooking time on the night of the meal will lead to greater success. CONTRIBUTED
Box or Moink, or keeping an eye out at the supermarket and stocking up when your favorite proteins go on sale. For instance, when chicken breasts and thighs are on sale, buy several packages and stock up on your favorite spice blends to pre-season proteins and freeze for use at a later date. Food for Thought has a variety of combinations from around the globe – think curry from the Middle East or jerk blends from Jamaica. Cajun spices from Louisiana are great for chicken
as well as shrimp and fish, which thaw quickly on those weeknights you’re short on time. If you don’t have a vacuum sealer, Ziploc bags will work. Just be sure to remove as much excess air before freezing to avoid freezerburned food. Pull out your pre-seasoned protein in the morning before work to thaw during the day and roast or saute with a bag or two of your favorite frozen veggies for a quick and easy weeknight meal on the fly.
Plan the week’s meals based on your family’s schedule Cooking a brand new meal seven days a week can be quite challenging when factoring in work schedules, extracurricular activities, after-work obligations and summertime fun. Take life and your family’s dinner schedule one week at a time. What nights do the kids have practice? What nights will you be home? Plan to cook meals on the nights you’ll be home and prepare enough to take leftovers the next day so you won’t be tempted to order out for lunch the next day. Even if you don’t take leftovers to work, you’ll know there will be enough food in the fridge to reheat a quick meal when your family arrives home after the sun goes down. Cold salads that hold up for several days in the fridge (apparently, the Jennifer Aniston salad is trending) or a rotisserie chicken, bag of mixed greens, hot sauce and your favorite low fat bleu cheese or ranch make a salad that feels like wing night and can help keep you on track on your health journey. THAT IS ONE CUTE BABY
DOLPHIN RESEARCH CENTER STAFF RALLIES TO CARE FOR NEWBORN CALF
D
olphin Research Center’s newest flippered addition is in need of a few helping hands. Thankfully, she has dozens waiting in line. When DRC staff came to work on the morning of May 31, they were treated to a small miracle in their lagoons: expecting 15-year-old mother Gypsi had given birth to a baby girl overnight. Though they were overjoyed to finally lay eyes on the calf they had waited a year to meet, their initial reactions were tempered by immediate challenges. As is quite common for first-time dolphin mothers, Gypsi seemed confused as to how to best care for her youngling. The mother and daughter shared a lagoon for a short time with Gypsi’s own 48-year-old mother Tursi, who attempted to guide the calf but was unable to nurse it with the nutrient-rich milk that only her mother could provide. In an effort to provide the infant with the nutrition and supervision she needed, DRC’s animal care experts elected to move the calf to the facility’s medical pool, a separate habitat that would allow her to be more easily supervised and bottle fed around the clock. Since the move, the little one has had an endless rotation of animal care staff swimming by her side nearly 24 hours a day, including three-person, three-hour overnight shifts every night – even through last weekend’s tropical storm. Though she’ll venture off on her own at times, her comfort zone is what’s known as the echelon position – swimming slightly beneath the lower body of her caretaker, just as she would ordinarily do with her mother. Early on, she even allowed trainers to “surf” her, laying on their chests for an easy ride around the surface of her pool. And when she’s tired, she simply cruises into her trainers’ arms and falls asleep for a quick nap. Nutrition for the calf is one of the team’s main focuses, and though the little one’s mother is not physically present in the pool, Gypsi has pulled her weight in a different capacity. Some may be surprised to learn that as mammals, baby dolphins drink milk from their mothers by curling their specially-designed tongues to create a watertight seal around the nipple in the mother’s mammary slit.
After months of prep work with her trainers leading up to the birth, Gypsi has learned to voluntarily allow the team to extract milk from her mammary glands using gentle suction from a specially-designed dolphin equivalent of a breast pump. Using a combination of this milk and a special infant formula developed by SeaWorld, the baby receives nutrition through a bottle or small tube every 90 minutes, allowing her to take in the necessary fatty calories while still reaping the immune system benefits from her own mother’s milk. At just 30 pounds, weight gain over her first few weeks and months will prove critical for the youngling. Though DRC’s cautiously optimistic staff has thrown every possible medical advantage at the baby dolphin, the little one remains in a guarded condition through such a vulnerable period of life. Dolphins experience high mortality rates through the first year in both wild and human care settings, and first-time pregnancies are always considered high risk. Some studies of dolphin life expectancies exclude animals that don’t make it through their first year. DRC’s veterinary and animal care teams will continue to give the baby her best chance to thrive – a chance she more than likely would not have been afforded in the wild. The center has proven extremely successful in raising dozens of dolphin calves in the past, but the present situation is admittedly a first, even for them. Thankfully, the team can rely on the experience of staff veterinarian Dr. Scott Gearhart, who has successfully raised neonates in his prior career at SeaWorld. The crew has listened to advice from other facilities that faced similar challenges, and has been more than happy to share its experiences with other organizations to add to the ever-growing knowledge base for newborn cetacean care. According to CEO Rita Irwin, every day with the calf brings a need for constant reassessment, as caretakers work to ensure comfort and efficiency for both Gypsi and her calf during milk collections and bottle feedings. Over the course of this interview, animal care staff elected to increase the frequency of the day’s feedings in order to help the baby pack on some pounds. The team leaves no stone unturned, experimenting with all aspects of her care – right down to, for example, the shape and rigidity of the nipple on her bottle.
Gypsi’s calf uses her specialized tongue to latch on for a bottle feeding of her mother’s milk. DOLPHIN RESEARCH CENTER/Contributed
With no readily available “cetacean bottle” on the shelves of animal care suppliers, DRC’s crew currently uses a version originally designed for bottle-feeding lambs. Providing just the right length and balance between flexibility and rigidity, the design allows the calf to securely latch on and drink without collapsing the nipple with her surprisingly strong tongue. Adding round-the-clock care for the little one to the daily operations of a large facility has understandably left the staff exhausted. With at least two months to go until the baby can eat solid food, the crew knows they’re in for the long haul. And yet, each one of them can’t help but smile as they move through a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hand-raise the infant. Getting staff to volunteer for shifts at all hours of the day and night isn’t a problem. But telling them to leave a baby dolphin and get some rest? That’s another story. And according to Irwin, she’d expect nothing less. “It’s DRC at its finest,” she said. “If we could use every staff member, every single person would volunteer to be in here and help her. We say we’re a family, and when families have someone who needs urgent care, we all rally.” For updates on the calf and donation opportunities to support Dolphin Research Center’s ongoing efforts, follow the facility’s Facebook page or visit www.dolphins.org.
After hours of swimming, the baby parks herself in Erica Wisniewski’s arms for a quick nap. ALEX RICKERT/ Keys Weekly

KILLER SWORD A battle lasting nearly five hours ended in victory for Marathon-based Outlaw Sportfishing’s captain Brad Picariello, mate Steve Wisniewski and two charter clients from Massachusetts as the foursome hauled in a 12-foot swordfish. Beginning the battle on their last drop of the day 30 miles offshore in 1,500 feet of water, the crew traveled more than eight miles, winding up 38 miles offshore by the time the fish was subdued. Though the massive swordfish was not weighed on a scale, the length and girth measurements paired with the commonly accepted standard billfish weight formula estimated the catch at 341 pounds. Pictured is Picariello with the massive sword. KIRILL OLEYNIKOV/ Innastate Studios

MARATHON WEEKLY / JUNE 9, 2022 Alma with her pet eastern indigo snake at Freddie’s Gift Shop. FLORIDA KEYS PUBLIC LIBRARIES/ Emma Stout Collection
THE SNAKE LADY
Highly-touted hunter and sewer brought an attraction to Marathon
A
lma Cagle Bishop was born on June 9, 1902, and grew up in what she called the Texas boondocks. She hunted snakes on the Lone Star State’s plains as a little girl. Before long, Alma was skinning her prey and using the leather to craft handmade belts, wallets and handbags. As word spread about the elegant designs of her hand-sewn wares, people she had never met began showing up at her ranch house to buy snakeskin goods. When she had saved up enough money, Alma bought a car and a trailer and set off on an adventure that crisscrossed America. Whenever she started running low on cash, she stopped, went out into the woods and caught more snakes. After finding her way to Florida, she bought a house in Fort Myers and began working as a cashier for the local telephone company. Alma continued to hunt for snakes, skin them and sew their leather into beautiful creations. The hunter in her loved the Everglades, where she would venture out to collect her specimens. She caught hundreds of rattlesnakes for noted herpetologist Ross Allen and his Ross Allen Reptile Institute at Silver Springs. Allen wrestled alligators and milked venom from rattlesnake fangs for curious crowds who stopped at his attraction and learning facility. Because collecting rattlesnake venom was deemed critically important, Alma was given a government vehicle, a 1941 Dodge “reconnaissance” vehicle, to use to get out into the Everglades and capture the slithery creatures. She would go out into the Florida wilds for a week at a time, sometimes with five or six other snake hunters, but she was always the only female snake handler. In 1951, Alma accompanied Ross Allen to Cuba to film a movie about the island’s wildlife. By 1951, Alma was living in the Florida Keys.
She sold her Fort Myers house on Monroe Street for $3,500 in 1945 and moved to the Keys, where she had traveled on several snake-hunting expeditions. In those days, eastern diamondback rattlesnakes and red rat snakes were still found in abundance. When she sold her house and left Fort Myers, she bought a house trailer, BRAD drove down to Marathon, and parked BERTELLI it on Key Vaca, where she quickly became something of a local celebrity is an author, – Alma, Marathon’s snake lady. speaker, and Florida Keys historian. At about the same time that Alma His latest book, drove her trailer down the Overseas “The Florida Keys Highway, Maud and Gilbert Spence Skunk Ape Files,” arrived on Key Vaca and opened their is a fun blend of Flamingo Bar and Restaurant in Mara- two of his favorite subjects — Florida thon. Maud invited Alma to set up a Keys history and little gift shop at the Flamingo, where the Skunk Ape. she sold snake skins and her handsewn wallets, bags and belts. Alma also showed off her pet snakes, an Eastern indigo snake (North America’s largest snake) and a boa constrictor, both famously photographed while draped in Ss across her shoulders. However, the star of her shop was also the namesake of the little place she named Freddie’s Gift Shop. Freddie was a pet marmoset given to Alma as a gift. The tiny member of the monkey family weighed all of five ounces and proved so popular with people who came to browse through her snakeskin products that she named the shop after him. The shop, and Alma the snake lady, became something of a roadside attraction. Her leathers garnered enough attention to attract clients from as far away as Hollywood, California. Alma listed her government-issued 1941 Dodge reconnaissance vehicle in the classified section of The Miami News for $1,000 in 1948. She still went snake hunting in the subtropical hammocks of the Keys when she could and did not require the Dodge to do that. When she could no longer go out into the bush and find local snakes, she traveled to South America on buying trips to purchase exotic snake skins to stitch into her leather creations. She sold her goods at Freddie’s but also from barstools at some of the local watering holes. There are other parts of her life that are generally commented upon when people write about Marathon’s snake lady – how many lovers she may or may not have had, or how one time she allegedly rode her horse up to a bar in Key West – but those are not the things that made Alma such a badass. In the 1940s and 1950s, she was stomping around in the Florida wilds side-by- side with a bunch of men, out catching hundreds of rattlesnakes because the government needed the venom to produce anti-venom. Today, rattlesnakes are still milked of their venom in the name of medical research. Alma Cagle Bishop once said about the Florida Keys, “It is the nearest thing to heaven I know.” It is good to know she felt that way because Alma, the snake lady, spent the rest of her life on Key Vaca. Alma Cagle Bishop died on Aug. 31, 1975, after she was hit by a car while walking across the Overseas Highway in Marathon the night before. She is buried on Big Pine Key at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

It was over in one hour and three minutes. TV commentator John McEnroe said Swiatek “overwhelmed” Gauff. That was about it, too. Both young women cried when it was over. So did announcer Mary Carillo. It was that kind of an emotional match at Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris. I thought both competitors reacted remarkably well, though. Gauff was never in it. It was 4-0 before she won her first and only game of the first set. In the second set, Gauff started out well, breaking Swiatek’s serve in the second game to go up 2-0, but it was soon 5-2 Swiatek and then 5-3, before Swiatek wrapped it up. Swiatek immediately ran up into the stands to hug her father. Swiatek, the Pole, spoke in perfect English, as she thanked her team, her dad, her sister at home, her opponent (“You’ll be here,” she told Gauff), the officials, the fans; she tried but couldn’t think of the name of her sponsor, she thanked her God, and then said, ”the people of Ukraine, stay strong.” So, we didn’t have Serena or Venus Williams there after having become accustomed to having one of the Williams sisters in contention. I know, we’ve been spoiled. Of course, Swiatek had a little help when Ashleigh Barty of Australia, who had been No. 1, retired in the past year. That left the top spot for Swiatek. And on Saturday, she proved she deserved it. Less than 24 hours later, the U.S. had another chance at No. 1 when the all-USA team of Gauff and Jessica Pegula faced
an unranked French team for the women’s doubles championship. But the French rallied to win, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. In men’s singles, Spaniard Rafael Nadal took his 14th French and 22nd overall grand slam title, defeating Norwegian Casper Ruud, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. We are used to seeing Nadal there and we saw him win big-time. Nadal took his victory fairly calmly, but he did hug it up with the ball kids. Otherwise, it was business as usual. 22? Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have 20. I’d say that’s too close for comfort. Nadal may think that way, too. “I don’t know what can happen in the future,” Nadal told the crowd. “I will keep fighting to try to keep going. For me it is incredible to play here with amazing support from you to me.” We, meaning the United States, did have other chances at a French title, but those went awry, too. In mixed doubles, two non-U.S. citizens faced two other non-U.S. citizens. In men’s doubles, Austin Krajicek of Tampa and Martin Dodig competed, but lost to Marcelo Arevaco and Jean-Jo Rojer, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3. There was another championship on the weekend: The Thursday-Sunday U.S. Open women’s golf championship at Pine Needles in North Carolina. By the second hole on Sunday, Minjee Lee was at 15 under par, five strokes better than Mina Harigae and seven over Lydia Ko. By the end of what was actually an exciting final day, the margin between Lee and Harigae had dropped from five to four when Lee bogeyed the 18th hole. Lee is from Australia and earned $1.8 million, a new figure for the Open. Harigae is from the United States and earned a little more than $1 million. Not bad for four days of work, but Harigae did not win and is not No. 1. Of the top 10 (who all qualify for next year’s tournament at Pebble Beach, California), only three were from the U.S. Those are Harigae, Nelly Korda and Megan Khang. Raise your child to play tennis or golf. There’s a lot of money in it.

n June 2, rain from the weekend’s incoming storm held off just long enough for Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys’ ceremonial ground-breaking for “Bell Haven.” Named after the late Jill Bell, a beloved longtime volunteer and Habitat staff member, the $3.3 million development is the organization’s largest build ever in the Middle Keys. It will include four duplex buildings for a total of nine units: six three-bedroom, two-bath homes; two two-bedroom, twobath homes; and a single condo unit with two bedrooms and two baths. “The more working families we have in stable housing, the more sustainable our economy becomes, and the better our community becomes as well,” said Marathon Mayor John Bartus, thanking the partnership among Habitat, the Monroe County Commission, and the Monroe County Land Authority. “Habitat stabilizes our community by providing shelter and protection,” said Chris Todd Young, executive director for Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys. “Bell Haven is a place of protection and safety, a place to thrive and a place to call home.” The build is scheduled for completion in late summer 2023, and Habitat for Humanity plans to open the application period for the homes in early 2023. For more information on the application process, visit www.habitatmiddlekeys.org.

t was a little over two decades ago, during my first term as mayor, that Marathon’s City Council purchased the parcel at the top of 75th Street in Marathon. The Rotary Club of Marathon had brought the idea of a children’s park, the Field of Dreams, to the council. It was a fantastic idea, and soon after, through a lot of community involvement and hard work, the Rotary Children’s Park became a reality. Rotarian Jane Daniels pushed hard to get this project happening; she had more than able assistance from Rita Rose, who spearheaded the brick sales that helped finance the project. So many other club members went all in on the project, far too many to name here. When it came time to build the park, the entire community came out in droves to, in the words of one Captain Picard, “Make it so.” Some Rotarians and volunteers were “affected” by poisonwood during the clearing of the parcel – but they got better. Future City Manager Mike Puto was the grand poohbah of the construction event, while contractor and future council member and mayor Jeff Pinkus was the job foreman. A great mix of skilled and unskilled volunteers did the heavy lifting and built the park. While I tended to the latter in terms of the volunteer skillset, Jeff Pinkus found out I could operate a chainsaw and had me cut creosotesoaked logs flush with the ground so that the swing sets could be anchored. I went through a lot of chains and chainsaws that day … and boy, were my arms (and everything else) tired. Two really cool things happened: first, Marathon’s children got a very cool new park; second, my involvement with the project finally got me to join Rotary — a decision I’ve never regretted in the 20 years since. Those 20 years, however, saw a lot of wear and tear on the park elements — so much so that the current council approved the total reconstruction of Rotary Park. Like before, the park’s design firm (Play By Design) took the redesign to the children of our community. And just like before, our local kids were the ones who came up with all the features in the new park plans. We have a design, and construction time is once again upon us. The city’s Parks & Recreation department is asking for volunteers of all skill levels to come out and build our new park. Construction is scheduled to begin
Monday, June 20 and go through Sunday, June 26. Parks & Rec Director Paul Davis has organized the volunteer process into four-hour shifts each day; adventurJOHN ous volunteers can commit to an entire BARTUS day if they choose. is the Mayor of Volunteers can the City of Maraalso specify their thon. He also is skill level, from a musician who skilled at power performs around tools to helping with town. For more food, childcare or see johnbartus. general assistance. com And the more the merrier — building this park was a blast for all of us those two decades ago. It is guaranteed to be a fun time with friends and neighbors, and the result will be a shining new park, constructed of materials designed to last longer and survive our harsh seaside summer climate. If you can’t volunteer, there are still ways to help. There are opportunities to sponsor different elements of the park, as well as a chance to purchase a fence picket that can be personalized with your name. And if you are the owner of one of our fine local restaurants, food donations for the construction days will be gratefully accepted. If you have questions, or would like to know more about how you can help rebuild our Field of Dreams, email wardj@ci.marathon.fl.us, or call the park office at 305-743-6598. Two decades ago, our community came together to give our children a fantastic place to play. Kids who played in that park are now bringing their children to the same park. Be part of the legacy that will be our new Field of Dreams. As an aside, if you are interested in finding out more about how the Rotary Club of Marathon works in our community (and has a whole lot of fun doing so), please join us for lunch at the Florida Keys Country Club — we meet each Wednesday at noon. Our big July 4th Beach Party and fundraiser is happening real soon, and we can use the help. MARATHON WEEKLY / JUNE 9, 2022
T
FLORIDA KEYS TABLE FOOD, DRINKS & PEOPLE
he Florida Keys boast some of the most iconic eateries and bars in the world. Creative culinary minds elevate local seafood to new levels and celebrate contemporary fusion, Cuban, Caribbean, Asian, French and other international influences. Our chain of islands is one of the world’s top food and drink destinations.
But our magnetic appeal goes beyond the menu. The skilled professionals who define our local hospitality industry do much more than mix creative cocktails and serve delicious meals. These hard-working men and women are ambassadors, social directors, travel advisors and unlicensed — but often effective — therapists. To celebrate our unique culinary culture, Keys Weekly brings you this bi-weekly
feature to highlight the food, libations and local personalities that define our “must-try” destinations across the Florida Keys. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a fifth-generation local, your options are endless. Indulge in something new or revisit a familiar favorite. And above all, support the local owners and loyal employees who are vital to our Keys communities.
YELLOWFIN SAKU TUNA Lazy Lobster, Key Largo
LAURA KUKUCA Pepe’s Cafe & Steakhouse 806 Caroline St., Key West
KEY LIME COLADA Island Fish Company, Marathon
Patrons can feast on delicious, fresh seafood and Keys style dishes at Lazy Lobster in Key Largo. Enjoy appetizers such as the yellowfin saku tuna encrusted with panko and wasabi. It’s sliced and served with seaweed salad, fresh ginger, wasabi and soy sauce on the side. DOUG FINGER/Keys Weekly
Laura is a Key West boat and beach girl, but when she’s not on or in the water, she’s making customers happy at Pepe’s Cafe and Steakhouse, especially when serving their famous margaritas. As always, all juices at Pepe’s are fresh- and hand-squeezed.
Take the frozen goodness of a piña colada and mix it with the Keys’ most famous fruit, and you’ll have the Island Fish Company’s Key Lime Colada. One of the most popular drinks on the tiki hut eatery’s menu combines a homemade piña colada mix with KeKe’s key lime pie cream liqueur for an island take on the tropical classic.
