t happened again. A mass shooter killed 19 kids and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas on May 24. As the nation debates and divides itself over a mental health crisis, background checks and the wisdom of making assault rifles easily accessible at gun shows, the Keys Weekly sat down with local school district officials and Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay. The question is simple: how safe are our schools with regard to mass shootings? The answer isn’t as simple. Every time a mass shooting occurs, protocols are analyzed, policies are changed, assessments are made and training is implemented. Monroe County schools, mental health professionals, Key West police and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are no different, but here in the Keys, they’re all working together. “School hardening” efforts have addressed physical barriers to prohibit unauthorized access and protect people, while monthly active shooter drills have been implemented as well as teacher and police training. But additional prevention efforts are being taken, said Alfredo Vazquez, the school district’s certified director of safety and security who is also a retired Key West police sergeant. Vazquez undergoes annual statewide training and thoroughly inspects each campus every year. In the wake of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida schools have mandated security upgrades in terms of cameras, single-entry

points to buildings, shades covering classroom windows and doors that lock automatically from the inside. But everyone agrees; there’s always more to be done. “We’ve come a long way since 2018,” said Pat Lefere, the district’s director of planning and operations. “Before Parkland, we had school resource officers in all schools except elementary schools. After Parkland, to their credit, Key West police and the sheriff’s office immediately stepped up and we all found a way to put officers in every school. “We’ve upgraded cameras and are continuing to do so. We’ve changed all the locks on classroom and building doors. We’ve added the window shades to prevent a shooter from seeing whether people are inside.” The school district also has established a behavioral threat assessment team at every school in an effort to provide foresight rather than horrifying hindsight, when it comes to someone’s dark social media postings, past mental health issues or behavioral problems and firearms access, Vazquez said. Daliana Goins, coordinator of counseling and intervention services, said the district also has added several social workers who can bridge the gaps between a student’s school and home life. In a message to all employees following the Texas shooting, Superintendent Theresa Axford wrote, in part, “Let’s continue to perfect our system that enables us to identify any possible problems in our district before something like that happens. Prevention is the key and early

identification of possible problems of paramount importance.” When speaking with the Keys Weekly on May 31, Axford added, “The shooter in this case was a loner who was disgruntled over not graduating. He had been out of school for a number of months. These types of students must be followed and assisted when they drop out.” Lefere added that fences around all schools have been upgraded, in many cases, heightened from a 4-foot chain link fence to a 6-foot one. “From a physical standpoint, I think everything is in place,” Lefere said. “Now we just need to maintain it, upgrade it when necessary and train staff to follow the protocols that are in place.” Fences continue to concern Sheriff Rick Ramsay, who has spoken with Axford and school board chair John Dick and will meet with them next week. “Any 14- to 19-year-old kid can climb a chain-link fence,” he told the Keys Weekly, urging the school district to install wrought-iron fencing that curves outward at the top to prevent climbing. The federal government uses a similar style fence around sensitive properties. “Is there a cost? Yes. But is our kids’ and teachers’ safety worth that price?” “After Parkland, the sheriff’s office did an in-depth analysis of all schools and provided the results to the school district,” Ramsay said. “A lot of the measures were taken, but not all. I’ve also been in touch with Lt. David Smith, my director of school resource officers. He’s going to get with all his officers to see where we can do things better.” The sheriff will meet in the coming week with Axford and others to discuss school security and continue the beneficial partnerships between schools and law enforcement. Vazquez commended those partnerships, saying that when he attends training throughout the state, he often encounters school administrators at odds with local law enforcement agencies. “Thankfully, that’s just not the case here at all,” Vazquez said.

une 1 starts a six-month hurricane season that forecasters say could bring 14 to 21 named storms due to La Niña and warmer Atlantic temperatures. Remnants from Hurricane Agatha, which made landfall in Mexico as a Category 2 on May 27, could bring several inches of rain to the Florida Keys later this week and into the weekend. Jon Rizzo, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Key West, said there’s increasing confidence that a tropical depression could form by Thursday, June 2 or Friday, June 3 over the northwest Caribbean Sea. The latest track by the National Hurricane Center shows South Florida and the Florida Keys as the main target. Rizzo said the storm is expected to move northeast rather slowly, causing heavy rain for the Keys. “Conditions are not ideal for strong development,” Rizzo said, adding that it could be a tropical depression or a weak tropical storm. If elevated to a tropical storm, it would be the first named storm of the 2022 Atlantic season. Storms with sustained winds below 39 mph are referred to as tropical depressions, while storms with sustained winds of at least 39 mph would be on the lower end of a tropical storm. Hurricane Agatha made landfall just west of Puerto Angel, Mexico on May 27. The Category 2 storm was the first of the eastern Pacific season. Rizzo said it’s not unprecedented to see a Pacific storm

SEASON KICKS OFF WITH A POSSIBLE STORM Keys can expect rain through weekend causing some disruption to the southeast U.S. this time of year, when currents aren’t necessarily moving west into the open Pacific Ocean. “This is not something we would normally see during the peak of hurricane season where we keep our eyes more to the east and southeast,” Rizzo said. Monroe County Emergency Management urged residents to review their storm preparedness plans, especially those in areas prone to flooding from rainfall. In the Keys, a hurricane conference for the tourism industry on May 26 welcomed Jamie Rhome, deputy director for the National Hurricane Center, as one of several guest speakers. He joined the NHC in 1999 as a marine forecaster. He was then elevated to hurricane specialist in 2006. Rhome noted that between 2017 to 2021, there were about 100 named storms and 45 named hurricanes. Sixteen of those made landfall in the U.S. Rhome said the average number of cyclones per year is going up, but what’s worse is the impact storms are having upon landfall. Rhome attributed that to warming Atlantic waters, sea level rise

and more moisture in the air. “I’m an avid free diver and I lobster, and I'm telling you even as a nonscientist, the ocean is warming. That is the fuel for a hurricane,” he said. And Rhome said storms are forming close to land and rapidly intensifying. “Most powerful hurricanes that strike the U.S. develop rapidly basically right off the coast,” he said. “The notion that you have days and days, you have to drop that. It’ll catch you off guard at some point.” A recent survey by AAA heard from roughly 5,000 residents regarding the upcoming hurricane season. A quarter of Floridians say they wouldn’t heed evacuation warnings. Among the reasons were the lack of a safe option for their pets, uncertainty of where to evacuate to and financial reasons. Two-in-five respondents said high prices and availability of gas would make them less willing to evacuate their homes if recommended to do so. “Prices at the pump are likely to remain high throughout the summer,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. “So, if you’re worried about evacuation costs, it may be a good idea to start setting aside some money now.” The survey by AAA found that 27% of Floridians are more concerned about this year’s hurricane season. As hurricane season begins, Rizzo said, people should know the risks and vulnerabilities associated with their properties. He also recommends visiting monroecountyem.com or floridadisaster. org to learn more on how to prepare. “Get a plan. That’s the mission,” he said. Florida’s disaster preparedness tax free holiday goes through Friday, June 10. Floridians are able to save on items such as flashlights, radios, tarps, batteries, coolers and generators. Other tax free items include cat litter less than 25 pounds or $25; leashes, collars or muzzles less than $15; dry pet food less than 15 pounds or $15; and carbon monoxide detectors less than $70. DETAILS EMERGE IN PARASAIL ACCIDENT

Collision with Seven Mile Bridge leaves one dead, two injured ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com

D

etails continue to emerge in reports investigating a parasailing accident that left one woman dead and her son and a nephew with injuries on May 30. According to FWC law enforcement’s 24-hour report released on the evening of May 31, 33-year-old Supraja Alaparthi was taking a threeseater parasail flight along with her 10-year-old son Sriakshith Alaparthi and 9-year-old nephew Vishant Sadda. A strong gust of wind “pegged” their parasail, a term used to describe when a parasail becomes controlled by the weather conditions instead of the towing vessel and begins to impede the safe operation of the towing vessel by becoming a sail. With the parasail pegged, the boat’s captain intentionally cut the line tethering the three victims, who dropped to the water and were dragged by the freed parasail across the surface until it collided with the old Seven Mile Bridge. Marathon captain John Callion was conducting a charter under the bridge when he saw the parasail flying with

a storm on the horizon around 5:30 p.m. His trip soon turned into a rescue mission as he saw the line detach and the three victims dragged through the water all the way to the bridge. “When I pulled up to the scene, I thought that we were just going to deal with these people that got beaten up on the drag,” said Callion, estimating that the victims were dragged between one and two miles in the water. “When I had to get to them, I had to drive around Pigeon Key, so I didn’t see

them actually get in contact with the bridge.” Callion arrived to find Supraja and Vishant unresponsive. Working with his passengers to cut the three victims free from their harnesses, he immediately made his way to Sunset Grille as his passengers began CPR on the pair. “I was considering leaving before the wind got bad,” Callion told Keys Weekly. “It didn’t take me five minutes to get up next to these people. … By the time I pulled up next to them, in probably less than three minutes we had everybody in the boat and we were on the way. One kid wasn’t breathing and my customer got him to breathe again. “It was horrible, as bad as you can imagine. … Honestly, when I was pulling up I thought that we were going to pull them in the boat and pass them off to the parasail boat. I didn’t realize people were dying.” Once on land, Supraja Alaparthi was pronounced dead at the scene. Her son suffered minor injuries, while Sadda was eventually transported to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami for additional treatment. Sadda’s parents indicated to Callion on May

31 that he is expected to make a full recovery. Sources indicated to Keys Weekly that the parasail company involved in the incident was Marathon-based Lighthouse Parasail. When contacted for comment, co-owner Alex Winter confirmed his company’s involvement but otherwise declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, stating that this was a “time for grieving for the families.” Highly praised – with good reason – for his rescue efforts, Callion said he felt it was “part of (his) duty being out there.” “Yesterday was life-changing for me,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “My heart and prayers go out to the victims, I truly did all I could do. … Never take life for granted. Things can change in a second.” “Our condolences are with the family and loved ones of those affected by Monday’s accident,” said Coast Guard Capt. Jason Ingram in a statement. “This was a tragedy for a family seeking to enjoy their visit to the Florida Keys. Our team, and our partners at Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, are investigating the accident to determine the causal factors and mitigate future casualties to make the waterways as safe as possible.”

GOOD HEALTH CLINIC KICKS OFF 10TH ANNUAL BIG KAHUNA CONTEST Eight vie for the wooden trophy

G

ood Health Clinic is kicking off its 10th Annual Big Kahuna Contest to raise awareness and funds for the clinic, which provides health care services for uninsured, income-constrained adults and children in the Florida Keys. This year, eight individuals were selected from a pool of nominees in Monroe County to use their personal and professional network to raise funds for Good Health Clinic patients. In the friendly competition, the person who raises the most money wins the coveted title of Big Kahuna and the honor of housing the Big Kahuna trophy in their home or business for one year. The winner will be announced at the 10th annual Luau for Health fundraiser on Oct. 8 at Dolphins Plus Bayside.

Donations may be given directly to Kahunas, dropped off at the clinic or given online at www. thegoodhealthclinic.org. Sponsorships are offered at all levels and include tickets to the big event. With nearly 25% of the Florida Keys population uninsured, supporting the clinic ensures the essential health care that helps residents maintain jobs, improves a child's success and gives individuals and families the ability to participate in, and contribute to, our community. “The Kahuna contestants exemplify the best of our community. They are generous and motivated to make a difference in the lives of those around them.” said Kate Banick, executive director. "Through your support, we can continue to offer live changing and lifesaving care to the most medically vulnerable from Key Largo to Key West."

Good Health Clinic opened in 2004 to facilitate true health care solutions for uninsured, income-constrained patients. With offices in Tavernier and Marathon, the clinic serves over 900 patients a year and has coordinated over $70 million in donated medical services and $9 million in vital medications to Keys residents for free. The clinic's small paid staff provides direct care and connects patients with medical professionals and entities throughout the Keys, South Florida, and the nation who donate their health services. If you are uninsured and in need of primary/wellness care, medications, diagnostics, or an advanced specialist, visit www.thegoodhealthclinic.org or call 305-853-1788 to see if you are eligible to become a patient. — Contributed

DONALD (DON) HORTON D Horton Construction Co and Island Construction Management

BARBARA BERNSTEIN Office manager for Dr. Paul Bernstein

PETE FREZZA Environmental resources manager, Village of Islamorada

RON BURKE Vice president & chief nursing officer at Mariners Hospital

Although originally from Texas, how can anyone who’s lived in the Keys for 45 years say they are from somewhere else? Don’s a local, he loves the Keys and the people in the Keys. Don left his profession fighting oil fires in Texas and moved his family to paradise after just one visit to the Keys in 1977. He graduated from fire academy at Texas A&M and graduated online with a degree in construction management. He’s the retired building official from Monroe County and Islamorada and holds many state licenses. He owns Island Construction Management Inc. and D Horton Construction Company. He has two daughters, Brandi and Amie, who reside in Islamorada; both are working professionals. He has a grandson who’s married to the best granddaughter-in-law in the world, and has two great (really great) granddaughters. Everyone knows his significant other, Carla Bahn. So to explain Don, well … it’s the name of his boat: “Livin’ the Dream”… “The Good Health Clinic is a cornerstone of health care for many locals,” he said. “I’m running for the Big Kahuna to raise awareness and funds for this valuable organization.”

Barbara Bernstein and her husband, Paul Bernstein, live and work in Key Largo. They have one son who graduated from Coral Shores High school and University of Florida, and is currently attending NYU for his graduate degree. Barbara received her degree in dental technology with two certifications in fixed dental prosthetics and Paul has his dental degree from Northwestern University. They enjoy sailing, tennis, pickleball, birding, reading and the arts. Barbara and Paul have seen patients who want to have good health and cannot afford to carry the expense of medical and dental insurance. Good Health Clinic can and does help our community, family, and friends attain that necessary health care at no expense to the patient. “We all have a civic responsibility to help others in some way or another,” she said. “As much as you can, leave things better than you found them.”

Pete Frezza is a 22-year resident of the Upper Keys. He grew up in Jupiter and graduated from Florida Atlantic University with degrees in the environmental sciences. He has enjoyed a career in the environmental field working within state and local government and at Audubon Florida’s Everglades Science Center in Tavernier for many years. For the last four years, Frezza has been employed by the Village of Islamorada as the environmental resources manager. He loves being a part of the Upper Keys community and being an advocate for all things environmental. Frezza enjoys waterrelated activities, birding, running and exploring Everglades National Park. ”I have accepted the Kahuna Challenge because what’s more important than good health?” he said. “We are so fortunate to have the Good Health Clinic, which is striving to provide it. I love this community and am thrilled and honored to be a part of this fundraising effort.”

Ron Burke is the vice president and chief nursing officer at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, and Fishermen’s Community Hospital in Marathon, since December 2021. Burke has been with Baptist Health since 2007, previously serving as the assistant vice president of nursing critical care and oncology services at Baptist Hospital of Miami. With more than 20 years of leadership experience in a healthcare setting, Burke has actively worked to support the nursing profession. He holds a bachelor of science in nursing degree and masters of science in nursing degree from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. He has also earned the Nurse Executive Advanced board certification. "Because we are anchored to your health and our Keys community, I am proud to run for Big Kahuna and represent Baptist Health,” he said. “The funds and awareness raised for the Good Health Clinic is important to me because providing care to those who need it the most is at the core of what we do.”

ADAM FOLEY President, Upper Keys Marine Construction

YVETTE DOHERTY, Real estate agent, Coldwell Banker Schmitt Real Estate Co.

Adam Foley is a Fordham University graduate and native Floridian. He has been married to his beloved wife, Jill, for 12 years and together they are the proud parents of five fur babies: Daisy, Charlie, Lulu, Sadie and Miles. Outside of work, Foley enjoys sports, boating and traveling. Foley supports several local charitable organizations including MarrVelous Pet Rescues, Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys, Dolphin Plus Marine Mammal First Responders, Coral Shores Athletic Association, Key Largo Community Preservation Foundation, Elks Lodge 1872, BPW of the Upper Keys and various philanthropies of our local chambers of commerce. Foley also serves on the boards of the Florida Marine Contractors Association and the Largo Sound Village Association. “Help those who help us – it’s that simple. Good Health Clinic has been supporting the Keys community for years through broad healthcare for the uninsured,” he said. “I am honored to run for this year’s Big Kahuna award and help this wonderful cause.”

Real estate advisor and licensed Realtor, Doherty began her long history in sales as the managing owner of Parkway Auto Sales, an automobile dealership in Homestead, Florida, 35 years ago. Real estate is her second career, launched after she and her family developed a passion for the Florida Keys, leading her and her husband, Bob, to relocate to Key Largo, in 2005. She has been an active member of the Soroptimist International Women’s Service Club since 1997 and has worked on the Southern regional board of directors since 2000. Her leadership roles have included president, secretary and director, and she has chaired the committees for many of the organizations’ fund-raising events. Doherty has also volunteered with the Homestead Soup Kitchen for nearly 10 years. Doherty is currently the secretary of the Sexton Cove Property Owners Association, since 2010, and serves on the board of directors of the Manatee Bay Club Condo Association. Supporting the underserved in her community has been a multi-generational passion for her and her family. “I am brimming with pride and flush with excitement about running for the Big Kahuna position. Make a ‘Y’s’ choice to support the Good Health Clinic, and support my fund-raising efforts in my pursuit of becoming the Good Health Clinic’s Big Kahuna for 2022.”

ARMANDO GONZALEZ Owner of Blue Marlin Jewelry Gonzalez has been the proud owner of Blue Marlin Jewelry for 30 years. He considers himself extremely blessed to be a part of this wonderful community that he loves so much. He lives by the same mantra he has just modified it to “treating all of my clients & staff like family.” When Gonzalez is not working, he enjoys making new acquaintances and being surrounded by loved ones, friends and family. There is nothing like a good adventure in his book, such as traveling abroad, fishing, diving and rappelling from helicopters. These things bring him immense joy. However, nothing compares to the satisfaction he obtains from contributing to our community. Every contribution, however big or small, makes a difference in the Good Health Clinic’s mission to bring health care to those in need. “I am sincere in my efforts to raise funds for Good Health Clinic. This cause is near and dear to my heart because I am a retired lieutenant with the Miami Dade Fire Rescue, paramedic, as well as a member of the Florida Task Force. I was an urban search & rescue team member. I live by the mantra of ‘treating all of my patients like family.’ Thank you in advance for your time and support,” he said.

JEN HAGEN AND JONI BEEVER — The Dream Team, Representing Affordable Asphalt & Charli's Shave Ice Hagen and Beever came down to the Keys at relatively the same time and have called this beautiful chain of islands their home for about a decade. They both have worked in the community with special events, bartending, and now both have small businesses in the Keys. They both have small children and love raising their families here. Hagen and Beever enjoy giving back to the community by volunteering their time; they work with the Conch Scramble every year to raise money and have volunteered for Voices for Florida Keys Children for many years. Providing healthcare to those who need it is so important to them after watching their mother struggle with her health and also struggle financially. When she did pass, this community came together and showed their family immense support. So, giving back to the community and providing healthcare are both causes near and dear to their hearts. They love the mission of the Good Health Clinic and hope to earn the title of Big Kahuna to help continue to bring health care to those that need it in Monroe County. “We are excited to be running for the title of Big Kahuna this year! We personally know many people that have benefited from the important services Good Health Clinic provides to our community, and are honored to be helping their cause. Let’s spread the aloha,” they said.

Rum runner Linwood on fire, 1923. U.S. COAST GUARD/Contributed

TOP OF THE RUM-RUNNING BUSINESS

B

The story of Spanish Marie

y every account, Marie was quite a woman. Born in 1903 to a Swedish father and Mexican mother, she grew up to be 6 feet tall with olive skin, blue eyes, and long, flowing black hair. If the stories are to be believed, and there are heaps and gobs of them told about her, she was equal parts charisma and cunning. As a young girl, she met a man of infamy named Charlie Waite; his family had ties to Key West. Charlie spent time in Havana, which is likely where he met Marie when she was still a young girl. The two married, moved to Miami and bought a boat in 1924. There, Charlie and Marie Waite opened the Miami Academy of Dance. It was Prohibition, and the studio was a front for the family business: rum-running. Charlie Waite was known as the king of the rum runners who brought liquor from the Bahamas and Cuba to a thirsty Florida. Charlie Waite had the reputation as the kind of smuggler who would not give up his booze without a fight. When the Coast Guard caught up with Waite and his small crew was apprehended in 1927, a failed escape attempt ensued. Two of the three captives were shot and killed, including Charlie, who fell overboard and into Biscayne Bay when a bullet struck his head. His body was never recovered. The bereaved wife, Marie, stepped in and took over the family business. It was not long before Marie Waite was recognized as the infamous Spanish Marie. It did not take long for Spanish Marie to rise to the top of the rum-running realm operating in the Straits of Florida. At the height of her rum-running career, which was not a lengthy one, she oversaw 15 boats. Like her husband, Spanish Marie ran her contraband from the Bahamas and Cuba and delivered it to Key West and South Florida. At first, her smugglers made the run across the Straits of Florida in groups of four. Three boats would be stockpiled with cases of liquor, while the fourth was armed with men ready to fight. Should the Coast Guard arrive and attempt to apprehend the rum runners, the armed boat would engage the government while the other three ships escaped to offload their contraband to speed boats waiting to run the booze to Miami or Key West. The operation was tried and true with a proven record of success. When the Coast Guard invested in faster ships capable of outrunning the rum runners, Spanish Marie devised a new plan and equipped all of the boats in her crew with radios. She also installed a pirate radio transmitter in Key West so that the Coast Guard could hear what she was broadcasting through the airwaves. Knowing people were listening, she provided false information to confuse and misguide the gov-

ernment ships working to intercept her rum runners. She also created a secret set of codes spoken in simple Spanish terms that told her people where to go and whom to meet. By the late months of 1927, she was at the height of her legendary career. But the government was starting to crack her Spanish code, and, on March 12, 1928, her luck came to an end. A load was arriving from Bimini, and, in the middle of the BRAD night, Marie received a phone call saying that the BERTELLI booze had safely arrived. Thinking it would be a quick job of unloading the crates, Marie left her is an author, Miami home and two small children and drove to speaker, and Flor- Coconut Grove to meet her contact and complete ida Keys historian. the job. The agreement was that she would appear in court to face the judge the following day. Mrs. Waite’s attorney showed up, but she never did. Her lawyer claimed Marie was suffering undue mental trauma. Her bond was increased to $3,000, and the date of arraignment extended. None of it mattered; she had never planned to appear in court. Spanish Marie and her boats disappeared, along with what was alleged to be $1 million This, however, was not the end of Spanish Marie’s story. Marie remarried and became Mrs. Marie Fritz. Her act did not change much, and she would be arrested from time to time over the next few years. According to the Dec. 2, 1938 edition of the Miami Herald, Mrs. Marie Fritz, formerly Spanish Marie, had again been arrested on a liquor charge. Prohibition was over but driving a car under the influence was still illegal, and she was found guilty of drunk driving. While Mrs. Marie Fritz died decades ago, Spanish Marie lives on in Key West – at least in spirit or spirits. Paul Menta, owner and operator of Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, created Bad Bitch Rum – Spanish Marie in her honor. The rum is aged in French oak barrels with a hint of red wine because legend says that the beautifully notorious rum runner used to cut her rum with a little red wine.

he American flag waved in the breeze as local residents and dignitaries came out to the 1935 Hurricane Monument in Islamorada for the annual Memorial Day ceremony on May 30. Organized by the Matecumbe Historical Trust, the ceremony began with welcoming remarks by Barbara Edgar, president of the trust, followed by an invocation by Pastor Bob Pavey. Local Boy Scouts presented the colors and Dan Furmanik sang the national anthem. State Rep. Jim Mooney provided remarks on the Hurricane Monument, which served as a backdrop to the several speakers. The monument honors World War I veterans who were in the Keys working on the highway when a powerful storm took their lives and the lives of locals. Monroe County Mayor David Rice and Islamorada Vice Mayor Henry Rosenthal also provided remarks. Cinnamon Edgar and Stephanie Scuderi laid a wreath. The Daughters of the American Revolution also placed a wreath in front of the monument. Furmanik sang “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless the USA.” A benediction by Pastor Tony Hammon concluded the ceremony.

ACHIEVING HEALTH AND FITNESS GOALS Certified TRX trainer is also a barefoot specialist MELINDA VAN FLEET www.keysweekly.com

"B

ring the phone up to your head — the phone moves. No one thinks to do that, and I see so many people whose heads and shoulders are slumped. I am seeing this more and more. And it's not about age; even teenagers are doing this." That's a typical conversation with Ruth Shrader-Grace, fitness coach and owner of Keys Core Fitness in Key Largo. The tips and ideas just naturally roll off her tongue, and you end up amazed at the common "mistakes" we may be making as we go through our day. Shrader-Grace and her husband, Eric Grace, moved from California, but she grew up in New York. They originally meant to settle in Broward but fell in love with the small-town vibe in the Keys. They have two sons, Maxwell, age 21, and Zachary, age 24, who graduated from Coral Shores. Keys Core Fitness was founded eight years ago. "I was always being led back to health and wellness but never had found something that really stuck with me,” said Shrader-Grace. “I was working out with someone, and they used something from someone else's studio. They introduced what they called TRX, but it wasn't TRX. Regardless, I was having fun, so I looked into it. "People started asking me about my physique, and since TRX resonated with me, I took a course in Boynton Beach and experienced an explosion of excitement,” she continued. “I could wrap my head around this fitness program. I wanted to learn more and more. I took every course there was because I wanted to go from qualified to certified."

Shrader-Grace is the only certified TRX trainer in the Keys and is also a barefoot training specialist, and is trained and certified in other holistic modes. "I wanted to take my skill set, love of pilates, exercise and health in general and then put a little more into it. I was able to meld it together. I like being a people's coach, understanding when I can challenge someone, and some days when someone says ‘I don't want to do this.’" She didn't know if it would fly because no one else was doing it, and it's not a piece of equipment in a gym. So what's a workout like? "I don't have a workout of the day,” she said. “Instead, I use four whiteboards to jot down ideas for my clients. But we do that when my client comes in and has something else they wish to work on. However, each time we work on the whole body." "To experience the best results, you should aim to come two times a week,” she said. “If you don't come more than once a week, it's like starting over. Sessions are an hour, and most people come twice a week, but three times is even better. I encourage people to do what they have time for." Results may be different for everyone, but people generally experience improved strength, posture and balance. TRX can be high or low impact and is also great for stretching. The exercises are functional and meant to keep your muscles strong. "Exercise isn't just about losing weight. It's also about bone loss and muscle tone. You can build bone mass with exercise, and resistance training helps," she said. As a coach, she often shares mindset shifts in conjunction with the training. "Some people

say to me, ‘I can't do squats.’ But, you do them every day: do you sit on a toilet? At a table? On a couch?" Her motivational style shows you that being aware of your body in conjunction with your everyday movements can be transformative. Shrader-Grace is also passionate about being a barefoot training specialist. "Everything literally starts with our feet, and there are so many receptors in our feet. Start first by connecting to the ground, pay attention and see what your feet are doing. Feel the vibrations from the earth. When you pay attention, you will start to walk properly and stand properly." Longtime client Jill Kuehnert said, "We have to invest in our fitness the way we invest in our relationships, business, retirement, etc. Find something that works for you, spend the money and show up. What's important for me is how I feel." Shrader-Grace charges $65 an hour for a single one-on-one, in-person session. You can purchase a five- or 10-pack, which has a discount. A multi-pack helps hold you accountable. You can also work out with a friend or family member, and she can meet with you virtually. "My love for this was because of its simplicity, and it's also fun. I believe in my clients, and I tell them you wouldn't be here if I didn't think you could do this,” she said. More information is at www.keyscorefitness.com or on Facebook @KeysCoreFitness.

THIS WEEK’S DIVE REPORT This past week, conditions were mixed. During the week, we had very high winds that kept the boats at dock. If you recall, winds – more than rain – are what determine how safe it is to be on the water. In fact, it’s actually a really cool experience to dive in light showers and to see the raindrops hitting the water surface from below. The weather turned great just in time for MemoERIC rial Day weekend. Low winds translated to great visBILLIPS ibility and some stunning dives. As with most holidays here in the Florida Keys, there were tons of boats out is the owner, on the water. CONSERVATION UPDATE As the weather improves, we take advantage by getting out with I.CARE to plant more endangered corals. This past weekend, recreational divers planted 805 individual corals, bringing the I.CARE lifetime total to 4,670. If you think you can’t personally make a difference, I invite you out with us. There is no better feeling than knowing you’re doing something that will directly affect the future of this reef. With that, you help not just the divers and dive industry, but also all the other businesses and services in the Keys that rely on a healthy reef.

On a busy weekend like Memorial Day, it's very important to display your dive flag when snorkeling and diving. Boaters must not operate their vessel within 50 feet of the diver down flag and must reduce speed to idle speed when within 200 feet of the flag. So place the flag on the highest point of your vessel you can and make sure it's large enough to be seen from a distance.

I.C ARE If it’s too windy to go out, consider visiting the land nursery at Bud N’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada. While nurse sharks are most commonly seen on the seafloor, you can occasionally see them in the water column. TONY TIMPANO/Contributed

MESSAGE FROM THE SHERIFF It’s that time of year again, when Florida Keys residents begin preparing for dangerous weather. Anyone who has lived through even a small storm knows being prepared makes all the difference. Stay informed. My favorite smartphone weather app is the Max Tracker Hurricane app from WPLG Channel 10, available at the Apple App Store or Google Play. It has great radar, maps and it also provides updates from the National Weather Service. Be Ready. Have an emergency plan and store obvious supplies such as plenty of water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit.

Important tips: • Have an evacuation route mapped out. • Keep your car full of gas and check the tires, oil, battery, etc … • Register those in your family who need special assistance for a county special needs program. • Keep a two-week supply of medications, including those for elderly family members and any other special-needs items for children. • If you have a pet, keep a two-week supply of pet food and medications. • Review your insurance policies and coverage. • Take photos and/or video footage of your property and store it with copies of your important papers. • Inspect your home and property. Check the roof for loose shingles; ensure your gutters are free of debris; check trees for loose branches; remove ground debris • Purchase plywood, rope, extra nails, and tarps for protecting windows and doors as well as heavy plastic bags and buckets for sanitation. • Learn where important switches and shut-off valves for gas, electricity and water are in your home. • Keep a battery-operated NOAA weather radio. • Have emergency cash in small denominations.

Download the MCSO App Today!

• Keep a two-week supply of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, clean supplies and feminine hygiene products. • Keep a working fire extinguisher. • Keep cooking supplies, including camping stove/grill, fuel/charcoal, matches, lighters. • Consider more than one portable cell phone charger • Store plenty of sunscreen and bug spray

i friends! Reef the fox here with this week’s “Reef’s Report.” I hope everyone had a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. It sure was crowded down here. Not that I was out and about, but I sure did hear all the traffic, sirens and horns. I’m glad foxes aren’t allowed to drive because I don’t think I would do well behind the wheel of a car down here on a holiday weekend. REEF Mom told me a little bit about the THE FOX history of Memorial Day. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the Reef is a red fox that was saved years following the Civil War and became from a fur farm. an official federal holiday in 1971. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season, and here in the Keys we officially entered hurricane season yesterday. Hurricane season already. Where does the time go? This will be my second hurricane season and I’m not sure if I’m ready. Last year we were lucky but that constant feeling of “what if” is pretty annoying. I like leading a laid back and relaxed life and having the threat of Mother Nature getting a wild hair up her bum just isn’t cool. I know mom put out our Amazon wish list of hurricane supplies. She does this every year. So if you wanted to check out our list and how you can help it’s all online at pawsitivebeginnings.org under “ways to donate”. Our friends over at Marr-Velous Pet Rescue are having a Yappy Hour tonight, June 2, down at Florida Keys Brewing in Islamorada from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be raffles and retail items available, as well as some of their adorable adoptable pups. Bring your four-legged friends for a yappy good time. Then on Saturday, June 4 from noon to 2 p.m., the Upper Keys Humane Society will be hosting its Cats, Cosmos and Construction microchipping event. Microchips are $20 and appointments are recommended. You can call 305-522-0260 to reserve your spot. Well, that’s all for this week. Until next time, Reef, over and out!

There are six cute kitties from different litters waiting for new homes. They range from 5 weeks to 8 weeks old. If you would like to make one of them a part of your family, or to learn more about other pets available for adoption, give the Upper Keys Humane Society (UKHS) a call at 305-451-3848. f you have been reading this bi-weekly column you have seen my byline under each title. I have enjoyed interviewing and writing each article, which has led me to a deeper involvement with Just Older Youth Inc. Recently I was hired to act as program coordinator while Betsy Baste is on vacation. From May through September, I will have the wonderful opportunity to interact with instructors, volunteers and participants at each Wednesday JOY Center gathering. I come to the position from a background in education, as a classroom teacher, professor, educational consultant and researcher. I am a native of Southern Ohio, growing up in a small town 50 miles southeast of Cincinnati (lovingly called “The Nati” or “Cincy”) and have strong connections with “Cincy,” where most of my teaching experience occurred. I am proud to say I earned a doctorate in education at the University of Cincinnati. I started my professional teaching career late in life. Previous to that I was a farmer’s wife. My husband, Robert Schroth, and I managed a thousand-acre corporate farm, where we raised corn, soybeans, wheat and Angus cattle. I spent days out in the fields driving tractors, feeding farm hands and walking among the vast fields. It was there that I learned corn grows at night; the loud popping and cracking sounds it makes, along with the chirping of crickets, hooting of owls and rhythmic display of lightning bugs create a dioramic, natural symphony like no other. The beauty and mystery of Ohio farmland, throughout the seasons, will always be a part of me. I came to the Keys to help a friend rehab a 43-foot Pearson trawler. It was his dream for some time to sell his farm, auction his home furnishings, tools and equipment, leaving only what would fit in his car and come to the Keys to live on a boat. And that is what he did. I came down to help and stayed with him for three years until the project was far enough along to meet his needs. He was 75 and I was 68 at the time. While working on the trawler I fell in love with the Keys. Seasonless as they seem to be, always green, mostly bright and surrounded by sparkling water. The endless motion of the bay, the swells of the ocean, living reefs and diverse Keys have their own beauty and mystery, which compel me to live here. In addition, the Upper Keys is a place where the senior citizen population impacts the community. A friend of mine persuaded me to go to a yoga class at the JOY Center. I then volunteered to teach a writing class. Now, I am working as a program coordinator with a group of seniors who are dedicated to creating a community center. I will be 72 on June 12 and plan to continue challenging myself to grow old with grace. Just Older Youth Inc. and the Florida Keys gives one a place to do just that. ‘TREASURE TRACKS’: A LOCAL AUTHOR'S LOVE LETTER TO THE KEYS MAKES A SPLASH WITH STUDENTS KELLIE BUTLER FARRELL www.keysweekly.com

P

lantation Key School fourth graders were all ears and overflowing with questions during a recent visit by author S.A. (Salli Anne) Rodriguez. "What kind of dive certified are you?" asked one student. "Our teacher's a divemaster," added another. Rodriguez was invited into the PKS media center to read a few pages from her soonto-be released children's novel, “Treasure Tracks.” The book, ideally suited for children ages 8-12, is primarily set in the Florida Keys with scuba diving, turquoise waters and abundant marine life all essential to the narrative. "It's amazing to be down here in the Keys; these kids, they get the love for the ocean. They really get it," said Rodriguez. Rodriguez also read to a sixth-grade class at PKS and to fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders at Ocean Studies Charter School in Key Largo and received similar acclaim. "You can see their eyes light up because they're so excited. There haven't been many books, especially at the middle grade level, set here," she added. The fast-paced adventure revolves around a 12-year-old boy on a treasure hunt for undersea riches to help his ailing abuelo (Spanish for “grandfather”). The protagonist, Fernando or “Fin,” encounters danger at every turn as he dives deep into a journey to save Abuelo's life. But “Treasure Tracks” is more than just a thrilling read for upper elementary and middle school students. The novel is brimming with local Keys history and includes a myriad of facts about our marine environment with emphasis placed on conservation. The inspiration for “Treasure Tracks” came during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rodriguez spent the entire lockdown at her Key Largo home with her three sons, who were going to school virtually. "We were locked indoors and I wanted to take kids on a great adventure. I was living this inspiration and it was important for me to really integrate the local history and the rich marine diversity we are fortunate to enjoy. It's our local treasure," said Rodriguez. "I wanted to bring that treasure into the book."

Honing her craft as a writer and getting published took patience, perseverance and a lot of grit. "I think if you ask any author, you get a lot of rejection. I was no different, I had to keep going and push past the no's. Books are very subjective," said Rodriguez. "Some people can connect to a particular story, some people don't. You can't take it

personally." Persistence paid off in June 2021. Rodriguez learned literary powerhouse Macmillan wanted to publish “Treasure Tracks.” "I got lucky with ‘Treasure Tracks.’ It's the third novel I've written, and the one that got picked up right away," said Rodriguez. Rodriguez is not only an author and researcher; she is also the former head of U.S. Hispanic marketing for Citibank. She studied communications at Loyola University in New Orleans and holds a master of business administration degree from the University of Miami. When asked by Macmillan where she wanted to officially launch “Treasure Tracks” later this month, Rodriguez did not hesitate. The launch event belonged in the Keys. "It was almost serendipity that Sandbar Books had just opened in Tavernier. It's this beautiful, ocean-themed bookstore," said Rodriguez. Rodriguez already has an enthusiastic future customer in PKS student Alexandra

Evelein. The fourth-grader holds the distinguished honor of having read over 1 million words this past school year. "I think it sounds really cool and I'm really excited to read it," said Evelein. If you'd like to take your child to the official launch of Treasure Tracks, just head over to Sandbar Books on Tuesday, June 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. The bookstore is located in Tavernier Towne Center at 91272 Overseas Highway. Rodriguez will be signing copies. There will be prizes, nibbles and fun for the whole family.

Local photography by Ian Wilson-Navarro and work by local gyotaku (traditional Japanese method of printing fish) artist Austin Armstrong were recently on display at the Roberto Russell Gallery in Islamorada. Esme Douma Key Largo School Kindergarten Activities: Playground and the pool. We play a game where one of us pretends to be a swim dragon and we have to swim away. If you’re caught you become a sea monster. What superpower would you most like to have, and why? Fly to my grandmother’s house but we can’t go there because my parents have to work.

T

he Keys Weekly is proud to introduce local students to the Kids Weekly feature. Instead of asking about their favorite teacher or school subject, we want to know what superpower they’d most like to have, their favorite YouTube channel and the hardest part about being a kid today. We thank our future leaders and Key Largo School for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Tornadoes” pride and for giving us a glimpse into their world.

If you could make a rule for the whole world to follow, what would it be? Be kind to each other. What makes you laugh? When my brother pretends to be a pig and snorts. When do you think a kid is old enough to have a cell phone? 6 years old. The hardest part about being a kid is … chores. To make the bed.

Meyers inks scholarship with Hillsborough Community College

oe Meyers, the Monroe County Player of the Year in volleyball, will continue her career at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. The Coral Shores senior said she chose Hillsborough Community College, having realized how successful the program was in a visit to the school. “The coaches and players were extremely welcoming and I am certain that I will improve as a player with their guidance and training,” she said. “I am grateful for this experience and am looking forward to joining the team to play at a higher level.” Meyers began playing volleyball in the sixth grade, and she’s loved the sport since then. Her volleyball career started at Island Christian School and continued when she transferred to Coral Shores High School, where she played on the junior varsity and varsity teams. “Coach Kathy Ets-Hokin encouraged me to join the Miami Elite Volleyball club where I gained new skills and traveled throughout the United States playing against incredible opponents,” she said. “I would like to thank all of my Coral Shores High school coaches – Kathy Ets-Hokin, Autumn Hager and Erin Kirkland – for supporting me through every season. I am fortunate to have been able to excel with their guidance and support. I would also

like to thank my parents for allowing me to pursue these amazing volleyball adventures.” Meyers also thanked coach Sandra Mora from Miami Elite for recommending her to the Hillsborough Community College team. Ets-Hokin said Meyers worked so hard to get to this point. “Zoe has grown and improved so much since her freshman year,” she said. “She earned her spot on the court and was the game changer. Zoe was an exciting athlete to watch play on the net. She will be a great asset to the college team. Zoe is full of positivity, energy, competitiveness, and dedication. I wish her the best in playing at the next level.” Rich Russell, Coral Shores athletic director, expressed his excitement for Meyers, having watched her play volleyball from her days at Island Christian School. “The fact that she was selected the top player in Monroe County speaks for itself, but I’m even more thrilled by the way she has blossomed into such a wonderful young lady,” he said. “I also want to recognize Coach (Kathy) EtsHokin for her tireless efforts. Zoe and Kate (Johnson) both earned college scholarships but every player on her team will enjoy enduring benefits from the discipline, commitment, work-ethic, and goal orientation she promoted on a daily basis.”
