DETAILS EMERGE IN PARASAIL ACCIDENT

Collision with Seven Mile Bridge leaves one dead, two injured ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com

D

etails continue to emerge in reports investigating a parasailing accident that left one woman dead and her son and a nephew with injuries on May 30.

According to FWC law enforcement’s 24-hour report released on the evening of May 31, 33-year-old Supraja Alaparthi was taking a threeseater parasail flight along with her 10-year-old son Sriakshith Alaparthi and 9-year-old nephew Vishant Sadda.

A strong gust of wind “pegged” their parasail, a term used to describe when a parasail becomes controlled by the weather conditions instead of the towing vessel and begins to impede the safe operation of the towing vessel by becoming a sail.

With the parasail pegged, the boat’s captain intentionally cut the line tethering the three victims, who dropped to the water and were dragged by the freed parasail across the surface until it collided with the old Seven Mile Bridge.

Marathon captain John Callion was conducting a charter under the bridge when he saw the parasail flying with a storm on the horizon around 5:30 p.m. His trip soon turned into a rescue mission as he saw the line detach and the three victims dragged through the water all the way to the bridge.

“When I pulled up to the scene, I thought that we were just going to deal with these people that got beaten up on the drag,” said Callion, estimating that the victims were dragged between one and two miles in the water. “When I had to get to them, I had to drive around Pigeon Key, so I didn’t see them actually get in contact with the bridge.”

Callion arrived to find Supraja and Vishant unresponsive. Working with his passengers to cut the three victims free from their harnesses, he immediately made his way to Sunset Grille as his passengers began CPR on the pair.

“I was considering leaving before the wind got bad,” Callion told Keys

Weekly. “It didn’t take me five minutes to get up next to these people. … By the time I pulled up next to them, in probably less than three minutes we had everybody in the boat and we were on the way. One kid wasn’t breathing and my customer got him to breathe again.

“It was horrible, as bad as you can imagine. … Honestly, when I was pulling up I thought that we were going to pull them in the boat and pass them off to the parasail boat. I didn’t realize people were dying.”

Once on land, Supraja Alaparthi was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her son suffered minor injuries, while Sadda was eventually transported to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami for additional treatment. Sadda’s parents indicated to Callion on May 31 that he is expected to make a full recovery.

Sources indicated to Keys Weekly that the parasail company involved in the incident was Marathon-based Lighthouse Parasail. When contacted for comment, co-owner Alex Winter

confirmed his company’s involvement but otherwise declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, stating that this was a “time for grieving for the families.”

Highly praised – with good reason – for his rescue efforts, Callion said he felt it was “part of (his) duty being out there.”

“Yesterday was life-changing for me,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “My heart and prayers go out to the victims, I truly did all I could do. … Never take life for granted. Things can change in a second.”

“Our condolences are with the family and loved ones of those affected by Monday’s accident,” said Coast Guard Capt. Jason Ingram in a statement. “This was a tragedy for a family seeking to enjoy their visit to the Florida Keys. Our team, and our partners at Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, are investigating the accident to determine the causal factors and mitigate future casualties to make the waterways as safe as possible.”

fter a week of celebrations and reflections on the trials overcome by the Class of 2022, 92 Marathon High School seniors crossed the stage for the last time at MHS’ commencement exercises on May 26.

Comparing his class’ experience to “a collage of 35-millimeter memories,” class salutatorian Leo Volchek encouraged the graduates to look back on both their fond memories and struggles throughout high school as inspiration in times of future uncertainty.

“When you watch the reel of everything you’ve done so far … you’ll fondly recollect the fragments of our time here, and their impact on the individuals you will be beyond this day,” he said. “This film to me is titled ‘Home.’”

Recalling several hilarious class moments and family stories, valedictorian Lilian Guo reminded the class that their choices and determination to achieve their goals moving forward will define them even more so than the last four years, while class president Clare Merryman assured each student that each of their accomplishments was equally noteworthy, whether or not they were recognized on paper.

“Maybe it was passing your driver’s test, or maybe it was getting all As on a report card. Maybe it was simply waking up to make your bed this morning,” said Merryman. “If you get up, you work hard and you remain positive, your life and life’s gifts will reflect this.”

BLAZE CAN’T KEEP IRIE DOWN

Food truck reopens after devastating fire ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com

W

hen Irie Island Eats owner Chris Lordi left his business just after 6 p.m. on May 27, the last thing he expected was to receive a call just 45 minutes later to return as Marathon Fire Rescue crews knocked down a blaze that had consumed the food truck.

“I live only three miles from there, and by the time I ran out of my place into my truck, I could see black smoke all the way from where I live,” he said.

A call placed at 6:30 p.m. first reported the fire, and in less than 30 minutes crews were packing up equipment after successfully extinguishing the flames. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Marathon Fire Rescue officials.

Though the trailer used for Lordi’s fixed location in Marathon and most of the equipment inside was a complete loss, he viewed it as “a blessing” that the blaze was contained, avoiding much of the greenery and a large tiki hut next to the restaurant.

“Luckily, (the fire department) got here fast enough to mitigate any further damage to any of our animals, any of our trees, any of the neighbors' stuff,” he said.

Though it only burned for a few minutes, the blaze was enough to destroy the majority of Irie’s main trailer. CONTRIBUTED.

Posts on social media confirming the fire were met with an outpouring of support from the Marathon community for the popular food truck. By the next morning, plans were announced for a benefit event at Marathon’s Lighthouse Grill on Sunday, June 12. The day will see all tips collected from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. donated to help Lordi and his employees rebuild. A Venmo account for private donations has been established at @irieislandeatshelpfund.

Noting Lordi’s work with KAIR, donations to a multitude of community events, and dedication to feeding homeless families in Marathon, Lighthouse Grill bartender Mike Lordi called his brother “the hardest working man I know.”

“He’s got a full heart. He’ll help anybody and donate anything that he possibly could to help,” said Mike. “It’s stuff that nobody hears about, because he doesn’t want anybody to hear about it.”

“I grew up extremely poor. … There were many nights when I was younger that dinner wasn’t always available,” said Chris. “Being in an opportunity now where I have the ability to give, I always try to give first and know that God’s going to take care of me on the other side.”

Working to ensure that Irie would reopen as soon as possible, Lordi spent the holiday weekend with his staff moving his older catering trailer into the main truck’s primary location and reconnecting the electric and gas lines. On May 31, Irie Island Eats announced its reopening.

With a new trailer on order, Lordi said he plans to use the makeshift setup for now as he works to make sure his employees get paid.

“Right now the roof’s leaking, but we’re making do,” said Lordi. “I could use a vacation; I’ve worked every day since September. But my people can’t use a vacation right now. I had to put myself second at this point to make sure that I can get open to make sure that my people are ensured a paycheck.”

Lordi said he’s been blown away so far by Marathon’s support for “the Irie concept,” which began as nothing more than a portable barbecue grill that he put in the back of his 1996 GMC Jimmy to drive to events. And although it would be easy to look at the fire as a tragedy, he said his faith has given him a sense of calm and reassurance as he works to rebuild.

“I had multiple people come up to me hysterically crying and saying, ‘Everything you’ve got is in flames.’ I said, ‘I see that.’ And they’re like, ‘But you’re not worried?’ And I said, ‘No, man. I just believe that God’s gonna take care of me through all of this. He’s my insurance, how’s that?’”

HOW SAFE ARE KEYS SCHOOLS? KEYS WEEKLY ASKS SCHOOL OFFICIALS & SHERIFF MANDY MILES

t happened again. A mass shooter killed 19 kids and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas on May 24.

As the nation debates and divides itself over a mental health crisis, background checks and the wisdom of making assault rifles easily accessible at gun shows, the Keys Weekly sat down with local school district officials and Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

The question is simple: how safe are our schools with regard to mass shootings? The answer isn’t as simple. Every time a mass shooting occurs, protocols are analyzed, policies are changed, assessments are made and training is implemented.

Monroe County schools, mental health professionals, Key West police and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are no different, but here in the Keys, they’re all working together.

“School hardening” efforts have addressed physical barriers to prohibit unauthorized access and protect people, while monthly active shooter drills have been implemented as well as teacher and police training.

But additional prevention efforts are being taken, said Alfredo Vazquez, the school district’s certified director of safety and security who is also a retired Key West police sergeant.

Vazquez undergoes annual statewide training and thoroughly inspects each campus every year. In the wake of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida schools have mandated security upgrades in terms of cameras, single-entry points to buildings, shades covering classroom windows and doors that lock automatically from the inside. But everyone agrees; there’s always more to be done.

“We’ve come a long way since 2018,” said Pat Lefere, the district’s director of planning and operations. “Before Parkland, we had school resource officers in all schools except elementary schools. After Parkland, to their credit, Key West police and the sheriff’s office immediately stepped up and we all found a way to put officers in every school.

“We’ve upgraded cameras and are continuing to do so.

We’ve changed all the locks on classroom and building doors.

We’ve added the window shades to prevent a shooter from seeing whether people are inside.”

The school district also has established a behavioral threat assessment team at every school in an effort to provide foresight rather than horrifying hindsight, when it comes to someone’s dark social media postings, past mental health issues or behavioral problems and firearms access, Vazquez said.

Daliana Goins, coordinator of counseling and intervention services, said the district also has added several social workers who can bridge the gaps between a student’s school and home life.

In a message to all employees following the Texas shooting, Superintendent Theresa Axford wrote, in part, “Let’s continue to perfect our system that enables us to identify any possible problems in our district before something like that happens. Prevention is the key and early identification of possible problems of paramount importance.”

When speaking with the Keys Weekly on May 31, Axford added, “The shooter in this case was a loner who was disgruntled over not graduating. He had been out of school for a number of months. These types of students must be followed and assisted when they drop out.”

Lefere added that fences around all schools have been upgraded, in many cases, heightened from a 4-foot chain link fence to a 6-foot one.

“From a physical standpoint, I think everything is in place,” Lefere said. “Now we just need to maintain it, upgrade it when necessary and train staff to follow the protocols that are in place.”

Fences continue to concern Sheriff Rick Ramsay, who has spoken with Axford and school board chair John Dick and will meet with them next week.

“Any 14- to 19-year-old kid can climb a chain-link fence,” he told the Keys Weekly, urging the school district to install wrought-iron fencing that curves outward at the top to prevent climbing. The federal government uses a similar style fence around sensitive properties. “Is there a cost? Yes. But is our kids’ and teachers’ safety worth that price?”

“After Parkland, the sheriff’s office did an in-depth analysis of all schools and provided the results to the school district,” Ramsay said. “A lot of the measures were taken, but not all. I’ve also been in touch with Lt. David Smith, my director of school resource officers. He’s going to get with all his officers to see where we can do things better.”

The sheriff will meet in the coming week with Axford and others to discuss school security and continue the beneficial partnerships between schools and law enforcement.

Vazquez commended those partnerships, saying that when he attends training throughout the state, he often encounters school administrators at odds with local law enforcement agencies.

“Thankfully, that’s just not the case here at all,” Vazquez said.

‘A DEBT WE CANNOT PAY’ American Legion honors fallen heroes on Memorial Day

E

ven after hosting many similar ceremonies, chaplain J.R. Jones could not hide the emotion in his voice as he paid tribute to fallen heroes at the American Legion’s honor guard ceremony at Memorial Gardens of the Keys cemetery on May 30.

“Every hamburger, every beer, every Coca-Cola we enjoy was paid for by those laying in Arlington and all the military cemeteries around our great nation,” said Jones. “We owe them a debt we cannot pay.

“Those of us that are veterans here, we were lucky to come home and grow old. But those friends we remember – kids that went off to protect this nation and never got a chance to come home and have a family and grow old, that’s why we’re here today.”

Lowering the flag to half-staff for a few moments, Jones reminded the crowd gathered to pay their respects that Memorial Day is intended as a celebration of the freedoms won by the fallen and enjoyed by those who call the United States home.

une 1 starts a six-month hurricane season that forecasters say could bring 14 to 21 named storms due to La Niña and warmer Atlantic temperatures.

Remnants from Hurricane Agatha, which made landfall in Mexico as a Category 2 on May 27, could bring several inches of rain to the Florida Keys later this week and into the weekend.

Jon Rizzo, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Key West, said there’s increasing confidence that a tropical depression could form by Thursday, June 2 or Friday, June 3 over the northwest Caribbean Sea. The latest track by the National Hurricane Center shows South Florida and the Florida Keys as the main target.

Rizzo said the storm is expected to move northeast rather slowly, causing heavy rain for the Keys.

“Conditions are not ideal for strong development,” Rizzo said, adding that it could be a tropical depression or a weak tropical storm.

If elevated to a tropical storm, it would be the first named storm of the 2022 Atlantic season. Storms with sustained winds below 39 mph are referred to as tropical depressions, while storms with sustained winds of at least 39 mph would be on the lower end of a tropical storm.

SEASON KICKS OFF WITH A POSSIBLE STORM Keys can expect rain through weekend causing some disruption to the southeast U.S. this time of year, when currents aren’t necessarily moving west into the open Pacific Ocean.

“This is not something we would normally see during the peak of hurricane season where we keep our eyes more to the east and southeast,” Rizzo said.

Monroe County Emergency Management urged residents to review their storm preparedness plans, especially those in areas prone to flooding from rainfall.

In the Keys, a hurricane conference for the tourism industry on May 26 welcomed Jamie Rhome, deputy director for the National Hurricane Center, as one of several guest speakers. He joined the NHC in 1999 as a marine forecaster. He was then elevated to hurricane specialist in 2006.

Rhome noted that between 2017 to 2021, there were about 100 named storms and 45 named hurricanes. Sixteen of those made landfall in the U.S. Rhome said the average number of cyclones per year is going up, but what’s worse is the impact storms are having upon landfall. Rhome attributed that to

warming Atlantic waters, sea level rise and more moisture in the air.

“I’m an avid free diver and I lobster, and I'm telling you even as a nonscientist, the ocean is warming. That is the fuel for a hurricane,” he said.

And Rhome said storms are forming close to land and rapidly intensifying.

“Most powerful hurricanes that strike the U.S. develop rapidly basically right off the coast,” he said. “The notion that you have days and days, you have to drop that. It’ll catch you off guard at some point.”

A recent survey by AAA heard from roughly 5,000 residents regarding the upcoming hurricane season. A quarter of Floridians say they wouldn’t heed evacuation warnings. Among the reasons were the lack of a safe option for their pets, uncertainty of where to evacuate to and financial reasons.

Two-in-five respondents said high prices and availability of gas would make them less willing to evacuate their homes if recommended to do so.

“Prices at the pump are likely to remain high throughout the summer,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. “So, if you’re worried about evacuation costs, it may be a good idea to start setting aside some money now.”

The survey by AAA found that 27% of Floridians are more concerned about this year’s hurricane season.

As hurricane season begins, Rizzo said, people should know the risks and vulnerabilities associated with their properties. He also recommends visiting monroecountyem.com or floridadisaster. org to learn more on how to prepare.

“Get a plan. That’s the mission,” he said.

10. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

Why? People get divorced every day, yet we are supposed to care about two ultra-wealthy, white people fighting over who pooped on whose bed and how the world was deprived of another Jack Sparrow movie. In the end, a Hollywood legend has been reduced to watching his dirty laundry unfold on a glorified segment of Judge Judy.

9. Elon Musk. Why? It’s hard to associate the world’s wealthiest man with the label of loser, but his latest attempt to purchase Twitter was a reminder of just how far removed the elite class is from everyday people.

The world is facing crises, from the effects of a global pandemic to inflation woes, and these guys made more money over the same span of time that many lost everything. Read the room. Now is not the time to shoot your buddies into space.

8. Cryptocurrency. Why? If you bought it, you’re likely regretting it, including cities like Miami that invested heavily in their own version of the virtual currency. The jury is still out on whether the entire crypto platform is a pyramid scheme.

7. The United States Supreme Court.

No matter where you stand on Roe vs. Wade, we can all agree the supreme law of the land should not have more leaks than your grandmother’s bridge club.

6. Will Smith. If you don’t know why, you obviously do not follow pop culture, the Academy Awards or know a single TikTok dance move. But the “slap heard around the world” shattered the image of a once-beloved Hollywood star, who attempted to take on the role of victim immediately after reducing a beautiful night at the Oscars into a 3 a.m. brawl at the local Waffle House.

5. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Why? Her antics are so bizarre and laced with bigotry, she managed to overshadow her pals Lauren Boebet and Matt Gaetz on this list. Add to that the fact that she and some guy famous for

owning My Pillow were directly advising the president of the United States during an attempted coup on our democracy and you start to wonder how hard it is to run the greatest superpower on the globe.

4. The National Basketball Association. Why? Because a league that eagerly launches itself into a myriad of domestic social stances has yet to address its ties to China and the $10 billion that NBA owners personally have invested there. Also, NBA China is valued at $5 billion, of which ESPN owns 5%, possibly explaining why the world’s largest sports media company took years to begin covering this topic. And the NBA’s China issue actually overshadows Hollywood and many other major American corporations like Nike and Visa — which remain silent on China’s tragic human rights record.

3. Uvalde School Police Chief. Why? Because it would be hard to imagine a more tragic story than what came out of Uvalde, Texas in May. The mass shooting that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers rattled our nation, but questions remain about the response time and measures of the Uvalde school police, led by Chief Pete Arredondo. Details of the flawed response by Arredondo continue to raise serious questions.

2. Coca-Cola. Why? Ok, we lied. We said the NBA overshadowed everyone on the China issue, but that doesn’t include Coke, which claims that “human rights is a fundamental company value.” Evidently that’s true unless you need to sponsor the 2022 Olympic Games in China — home to over a billion and a half Coke consumers. Coke happily overlooked human rights abuses in Xinjiang and other abuses across the communist superpower to appease profits.

1. Vladimir Putin. Why? Because who wakes up in the morning and says, “You know what? I think I’ll join Hitler and other historical architects of genocide in the history books … all because I’m a relic stuck in Cold War era policies from the 1960s.”

hen hurricanes come knocking in the Florida Keys, animals waiting for forever homes in shelters need a hand getting out of Dodge, too.

The Florida Keys SPCA is seeking individuals to volunteer as “hurricane fosters” for the 2022 hurricane season and beyond.

Fosters serve as temporary guardians for shelter animals if one or both of the SPCA campuses are evacuated in the event of a hurricane. Volunteers may take animals whether they intend to leave the Keys or ride out the storm at home.

“Even just one makes a difference,” said Tara McFarland, director of operations for the SPCA’s Marathon Campus.

Volunteers are matched with foster animals – from dogs and cats to a range of small animals – depending on their abilities, comfort levels, current pets and other special considerations. In other words, you won’t be matched up with a pet that triggers your allergies or is a threat to your full-time pets.

With two campuses in the Keys – one in Marathon, one in Key West – McFarland said the SPCA is often asked why they don’t just relocate animals from the Marathon shelter to the hurricane-rated and generatorpowered Key West shelter. While this is a possibility, she said that shelter space becomes even more critical in the aftermath of a larger storm.

“We want to be able to have the space to open up for free temporary boarding for people who have lost their homes,” she said. “If the shelter is already full of animals, and then we fill it with even more of our animals, and then we have more coming in, it’s compounding the problem.”

For those worried about the cost of caring for an animal for a few days or weeks, fear not: the SPCA will provide all necessary supplies, food and accessories to hold you over.

And though most Keys residents fully understand the stress of preparing for a major hurricane, a little extra effort could save a life.

“It’s a scary thing, having gone through Irma,” said McFarland, remembering the shelter’s last-minute scramble to find sufficient fosters for its last remaining animals. “Without exaggeration, we were standing in the middle of the road by the Sombrero Beach Road traffic light with handmade signs that said ‘If you’re evacuating, please take an animal.’ That is the only reason we got all of these animals out of here.”

MARATHON HOMEOWNERS CAN STILL APPLY FOR VOLUNTARY BUYOUT

A

fter Hurricane Irma swept the Keys in 2017, the state Department of Economic Opportunity allocated $75 million for the Voluntary Home Buyout program of the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR). The city of Marathon negotiates a deal, buys a home and demolishes it to leave the lot open for use as a “pocket park” green space or for stormwater management. Marathon homeowners have until June 15 to apply and funding is still available in the program.

The city has $5 million to spend and there are currently seven properties in the program. Three have pre-offers in place, of which two have been accepted and are at DEO for approval. Then, the Marathon City Council can approve the offers and set closing dates. Pre-offers were made at current fair market value. The other four properties are in various stages of the Voluntary Home Buyout program process.

“We are looking for additional applicants to complete the program and expend the available grant funds,” said Marathon grants coordinator Maria Covelli.

A recent rule change means homeowners could recoup a higher value for homes with repetitive damage.

“Previously, the offers were valued at pre-Irma prices. Now, the Voluntary Buyout pays the post-disaster fair market value,” Covelli said. Most homes in the program fall into the $175,000 to $250,000 range, although the cap for an individual home is $750,000.

The Voluntary Buyout Program also has a provision for tenants.

Renters who need to relocate due to the home being demolished can be provided up to $10,000 for out-of-county relocation expenses or $25,000 for in-county relocation expenses.

Marathon’s Voluntary Buyout Program may also benefit homeowners who face persistent and unfixable code violations with the attendant fines.

The program is administered through Tetra Tech, the same contractor managing the program for Monroe County.

“The entire process is moving quickly, so if anyone is interested to see if they qualify, they can check online,” said Covelli. For more information or to apply for the program, click here. ate last week, former bank executive and Marathon High School alumnus Jeff Smith registered as a candidate for Marathon City Council. He joins a field of Marathon residents that includes Bobby Grostefon, Kevin Macaulay, Kenny Matlock, Wayne Quarberg, Robyn Still and Richard Tamborrino.

Still is the only incumbent eligible for re-election, as current council members John Bartus, Steve Cook and “Doc Dan” Zieg have reached their three-term limit. Luis Gonzalez’ term ends in November 2024.

He is in the midst of his second term.

The 2022 election starts a new era in Marathon politics, with the new slate of council members serving four-year terms as a result of a city charter change that was approved in January of this year.

The three candidates earning the most votes this November will be Marathon’s first council members to serve the four-year terms, while the fourth-place candidate will serve the remaining two years of the seat vacated by Trevor Wofsey, who resigned in January. His seat is currently occupied by Still.

The Monroe County Supervisor of Elections will continue to pre-register candidates through the summer, with the qualifying period starting on August 2 and closing on August 9. Candidates may qualify in one of two ways: turn in 63 signed petitions no later than noon on July 5 or pay an $840 registration fee prior to the close of the qualifying period.

Candidate profiles and in-depth coverage of the race will continue this summer as the Keys Weekly Newspapers seeks to bring an informed electorate to the polls this November.

4:18 p.m. The mourning doves were the first to figure out the feeder when we put it up a couple months back, and were still its most common clients, but the first bird to belly up – belly down, really – was a Eurasian collared-dove. Big and beige with that inverse priest’s collar around its neck. It didn’t waste time, but started going at the pile immediately with these fast, full-body, pile-driver pecks, sending a serious portion of the feed flying over the side of the feeder. I timed it and the bird was hitting the seed pile about 95 times a minute.

4:24 p.m. A mourning dove came in and landed on the broomstick over the feeder. It was tentative at first, but clearly looking to make a move, and it was obvious how it was going to go. A Eurasian collared-dove weighs about seven ounces. A mourning dove weighs about four. Mass always wins. Except when it doesn’t.

The Eurasian collared-dove stabbed at the mourning dove with its bill, but the mourning dove held its ground. The Eurasian collared-dove threw its wings up and lunged at the mourning dove, but the smaller bird just crouched lower. Then the mourning dove threw itself at the collared-dove and the collared-dove fled, flapping two or three times until it landed on the nearby string of lights that stretched between the house and the Christmas palm.

Victory for the little guy. Or maybe gal. It’s really hard to sex doves.

The deposed Eurasian collared-dove faced the other direction for a few moments, then turned around and faced the feeder, looking, no doubt, as bullies everywhere do, for vulnerabilities and ways to exploit them.

The mourning dove was making its effort at the seed pile, though its technique varied. Its pecks were also about 95 a minute, but instead of a full head-up-and-down cycle with each peck, it only lifted its head a third of the way up. Every 15 pecks, though, it did a full cycle, throwing its head back, maybe needing to gulp down an accumulation of seeds all at once.

4:26 p.m. The Eurasian collared-dove attempted a return, jumping from the wire to the feeder, but the mourning dove stabbed at it with its bill when it got close, and the collared-dove U-turned in midair and retreated to the string of lights.

4:27 p.m. The collared-dove flew at the feeder again. This time the mourning dove, maybe having had its fill, ceded the territory and took off without a fight. The collared-dove seemed a little nonplussed by its own success, but after a moment returned to full-bodied pecking.

Traffic slowly increased in the yard. There were now two additional Eurasian collared-doves, three mourning doves, and a common ground dove down on the damp wood of the deck. One of the mourning doves flew up and deposed the Eurasian collared-dove.

Then one of the Eurasian collared-doves from the deck flew up and deposed the mourning dove.

The common ground dove, weighing a third of what a mourning dove weighs, and a sixth of what a Eurasian collared-dove weighs, mostly minded its own business. For a while anyhow. And then it leaped up and flew to the feeder. I was waiting for the hugeby-comparison collared-dove to attempt to eighty-six the ground dove, but it didn’t. The two just pecked at the seed side by side for a while, until a mourning dove came in and chased them out.

4:32 p.m. The Eurasian collared-doves and the mourning doves had been leaping up and leaving the yard like sped-up smoke. The only bird left was the common ground dove, which lurked under the table, trying to see how things were going to play out.

4:33 p.m. The common ground dove made its way up to the stump, its cinnamon wingtips flashing as it flew. Then it walked slowly down the broomstick with all the wariness of a sailor walking the plank, stopping at the end and looking around, possibly unwilling to take the risk.

4:34 p.m. The common ground dove dropped down to the feeder, looked around one last time, then finally committed, poking its stubby little bill into the pile, and hammering, by my count, at a slightly slower 80 pecks a minute. The bird was jumpy, stopping periodically to look around. I thought it was too nervous to get much down, but four minutes later the ground dove was still going at it.

Eight minutes later I wondered where they were putting it all. But then a jet came in low, and I looked up to see the name Delta on the belly, and when I looked back the feeder was empty, swinging slowly in the wind.

Last week, the Marathon Chamber of Commerce presented a check for $3,032 to Stanley Switlik Elementary School to go toward supporting the school’s PBIS Program.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) is a school-wide framework that, according to national research, enhances student quality of life and reduces problem behaviors. By establishing this framework, Switlik educators are developing skills, making changes to the school environment, acknowledging appropriate behavior and using data to identify supports for their students. As a PBIS Model School, Switlik demonstrates a commitment to positive and equitable outcomes for all students.

This is a very special donation for the Habitat mission as it was made in honor of Jill Bell, who was a Habitat board director, board president and most recently the organization's first ever volunteer coordinator. Bell's love and passion for Habitat Middle Keys was evident in her daily life. In September 2021, the organization lost Jill due to cancer. Before her passing, she was able to see the photo rendering of Habitat's newest home development coming to life. This development, with a projected completion date of late summer 2023, was a vision that she and her Habitat colleagues dreamed of since 2019. It is the organization's largest build ever. The story of Spanish Marie

y every account, Marie was quite a woman. Born in 1903 to a Swedish father and Mexican mother, she grew up to be 6 feet tall with olive skin, blue eyes, and long, flowing black hair.

If the stories are to be believed, and there are heaps and gobs of them told about her, she was equal parts charisma and cunning.

As a young girl, she met a man of infamy named Charlie Waite; his family had ties to Key West. Charlie spent time in Havana, which is likely where he met Marie when she was still a young girl. The two married, moved to Miami and bought a boat in 1924. There, Charlie and Marie Waite opened the Miami Academy of Dance. It was Prohibition, and the studio was a front for the family business: rum-running. Charlie Waite was known as the king of the rum runners who brought liquor from the Bahamas and Cuba to a thirsty Florida.

Charlie Waite had the reputation as the kind of smuggler who would not give up his booze without a fight. When the Coast Guard caught up with Waite and his small crew was apprehended in 1927, a failed escape attempt ensued. Two of the three captives were shot and killed, including Charlie, who fell overboard and into Biscayne Bay when a bullet struck his head. His body was never recovered.

The bereaved wife, Marie, stepped in and took over the family business. It was not long before Marie Waite was recognized as the infamous Spanish Marie. It did not take long for Spanish Marie to rise to the top of the rum-running realm operating in the Straits of Florida.

At the height of her rum-running career, which was not a lengthy one, she oversaw 15 boats.

Like her husband, Spanish Marie ran her contraband from the Bahamas and Cuba and delivered it to Key West and South Florida. At first, her smugglers made the run across the Straits of Florida in groups of four. Three boats would be stockpiled with cases of liquor, while the fourth was armed with men ready to fight. Should the Coast Guard arrive and attempt to apprehend the rum runners, the armed boat would engage the government while the other three ships escaped to offload their contraband to speed boats waiting to run the booze to Miami or Key West.

The operation was tried and true with a proven record of success.

When the Coast Guard invested in faster ships capable of outrunning the rum runners, Spanish Marie devised a new plan and equipped all of the boats in her crew with radios. She also installed a pirate radio transmitter in Key West so that the Coast Guard could hear what she was broadcasting through the airwaves. Knowing people were listening, she provided false information to confuse and misguide the gov-

ernment ships working to intercept her rum runners. She also created a secret set of codes spoken in simple Spanish terms that told her people where to go and whom to meet.

By the late months of 1927, she was at the height of her legendary career. But the government was starting to crack her Spanish code, and, on March 12, 1928, her luck came to an end. A load was arriving from Bimini, and, in the middle of the BRAD night, Marie received a phone call saying that the BERTELLI booze had safely arrived. Her lawyer claimed Marie was suffering undue mental trauma. Her bond was increased to $3,000, and the date of arraignment extended.

None of it mattered; she had never planned to appear in court. Spanish Marie and her boats disappeared, along with what was alleged to be $1 million This, however, was not the end of Spanish Marie’s story. Marie remarried and became Mrs. Marie Fritz. Her act did not change much, and she would be arrested from time to time over the next few years.

According to the Dec. 2, 1938 edition of the Miami Herald, Mrs. Marie Fritz, formerly Spanish Marie, had again been arrested on a liquor charge. Prohibition was over but driving a car under the influence was still illegal, and she was found guilty of drunk driving.

While Mrs. Marie Fritz died decades ago, Spanish Marie lives on in Key West – at least in spirit or spirits. Paul Menta, owner and operator of Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, created Bad Bitch Rum – Spanish Marie in her honor. The rum is aged in French oak barrels with a hint of red wine because legend says that the beautifully notorious rum runner used to cut her rum with a little red wine.

MESSAGE FROM THE SHERIFF It’s that time of year again, when Florida Keys residents begin preparing for dangerous weather.

Anyone who has lived through even a small storm knows being prepared makes all the difference.

Stay informed. My favorite smartphone weather app is the Max Tracker Hurricane app from WPLG Channel 10, available at the Apple App Store or Google Play. It has great radar, maps and it also provides updates from the National Weather Service.

Be Ready. Have an emergency plan and store obvious supplies such as plenty of water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit.

Important tips: • Have an evacuation route mapped out.

• Keep your car full of gas and check the tires, oil, battery, etc …

• Register those in your family who need special assistance for a county special needs program.

• Keep a two-week supply of medications, including those for elderly family members and any other special-needs items for children.

• If you have a pet, keep a two-week supply of pet food and medications.

• Review your insurance policies and coverage.

• Take photos and/or video footage of your property and store it with copies of your important papers.

• Inspect your home and property. Check the roof for loose shingles; ensure your gutters are free of debris; check trees for loose branches; remove ground debris • Purchase plywood, rope, extra nails, and tarps for protecting windows and doors as well as heavy plastic bags and buckets for sanitation.

• Learn where important switches and shut-off valves for gas, electricity and water are in your home.

• Keep a battery-operated NOAA weather radio.

• Have emergency cash in small denominations.

STILL ROCKIN’ AT 80 Paul McCartney still brings it!

T

hirty-two years ago, way back in the last millennium, my Keys writing career began with my review of the two (nearly identical) Paul McCartney shows I got to attend. At that time, Sir Paul hadn’t toured in years, and I was glad to have the opportunity to see an actual Beatle in concert. He did not disappoint.

Fast forward those 3.2 decades to this past weekend. At this point in history, not many people believe that Paul McCartney has anything left to prove – except for, perhaps, Paul McCartney.

Since 1990, he has released several albums of new music, toured the world multiple times and kept himself more than a little busy. I guess Tom Petty was correct when he sang, “You never slow down, you never get old.”

Paul McCartney turns 80 (!) this month. He certainly didn’t act like a typical 80-year-old, however, on stage in Orlando this past weekend. From the show opener, “Can’t Buy Me Love,” Paul and his amazing band let us know they meant business. The early part of the show alternated from Beatles classics like “Got To Get You Into My Life” and “Getting Better,” to Wings songs like “Junior’s Farm,” “Let Me Roll It” and “Let ’Em In.” A couple of Paul’s more recent songs showed up as well — “Come On to Me” and “My Valentine,” dedicated to his wife Nancy, in attendance at the Orlando show.

In the middle of the show, McCartney & Co. convened in a more intimate middle-of-the-stage semi-unplugged jam that featured the Beatles’ first single, “Love Me Do,” as well as a song written and recorded by the Quarrymen (the Beatles’ first band name) called “In Spite of All The Danger.” The more recent “Dance Tonight” featured drummer Abe Laboriel Jr.’s incredible dance moves that had the crowd roaring.

The band got a break while Paul played two solo acoustic songs. The White Album classic “Blackbird” was followed by Paul’s heartfelt tribute song to John Lennon, “Here Today.”

Newer songs “New” and “Fuh You” were interlaced with “Lady Madonna” and a very cool version of John Lennon’s “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” from the Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album.

Paul brought out a ukulele, and noting George Harrison’s fondness for ukulele jams, proceeded to start George’s “Something” as a cool uke

shuffle. Midway through, the song morphed into the more familiar arrangement as the warm and sincere tribute to George brought fans to their feet.

The encore started with “I’ve Got a Feeling,” which featured isolated audio and video of John Lennon at the Apple rooftop concert singing along with Paul and the band — it really was so freaking cool. “Birthday” and “Helter Skelter” led into the finale: the majestic “Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight / The End” from the second side of Abbey Road. And a nearly 80-year-old sauntered off the stage, obviously pleased and jazzed from the show.

This particular band has been with Paul for more than 20 years, and they combine great musicianship with a whole lot of feel-good fun. It’s easy to see that they’re having a blast on stage. And Paul moved effortlessly among bass, guitar, piano, mandolin and ukulele — a musician and a showman extraordinaire. Thirty-two years after I first saw Sir Paul, and more than 60 years after the start of the Beatles, Paul McCartney just isn’t ready to slow down just yet. At the end of the concert, he said, “See you next time.” Who knows? I’m not going to count him out!

BRIEFLY KCB, Marathon to host annual kids fishing derby Back for its 15th year, children from ages 6 to 14 are invited for a half-day fishing trip off the shores of Key Colony Beach on the Marathon Lady fishing boat on Wednesday, June 15. The trip will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a lunch and awards ceremony at the Key Colony Inn at 2 p.m. Registration forms are available at KCB’s city hall at 600 West Ocean Drive, and spots are limited to the first 55 children. United Methodist Church hosts drive-through hot dog lunch Marathon Community United Methodist Church (MCUMC) is having another hot dog lunch on Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church is continuing to raise funds to repair spalling damage caused by age and weather. The damage was extensive and repairs are costly. MCUMC has a long history in the community and was started in 1948 by residents of Marathon looking for a place to worship. The church continues to serve the community with its 10 a.m. Sunday services, services for the Haitian community on Mondays, and outreach events for families and youth through programs like Popcorn and Prayers in the Park on Thursday evenings. The church also serves as a headquarters for KAIR. Stop by 3010 Overseas Hwy. for a $5 lunch of a hotdog, chips and a cookie to help the church rebuild.

Residents reminded to drain and cover to guard against mosquitoes The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County and the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District remind residents and visitors that it is important to "Drain and Cover” to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and biting.
