t happened again. A mass shooter killed 19 kids and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas on May 24.

As the nation debates and divides itself over a mental health crisis, background checks and the wisdom of making assault rifles easily accessible at gun shows, the Keys Weekly sat down with local school district officials and Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

The question is simple: how safe are our schools with regard to mass shootings? The answer isn’t as simple. Every time a mass shooting occurs, protocols are analyzed, policies are changed, assessments are made and training is implemented.

Monroe County schools, mental health professionals, Key West police and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are no different, but here in the Keys, they’re all working together.

“School hardening” efforts have addressed physical barriers to prohibit unauthorized access and protect people, while monthly active shooter drills have been implemented as well as teacher and police training.

But additional prevention efforts are being taken, said Alfredo Vazquez, the school district’s certified director of safety and security who is also a retired Key West police sergeant.

Vazquez undergoes annual statewide training and thoroughly inspects each campus every year. In the wake of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida schools have mandated security upgrades

in terms of cameras, single-entry points to buildings, shades covering classroom windows and doors that lock automatically from the inside.

But everyone agrees; there’s always more to be done.

“We’ve come a long way since 2018,” said Pat Lefere, the district’s director of planning and operations.

“Before Parkland, we had school resource officers in all schools except elementary schools. After Parkland, to their credit, Key West police and the sheriff’s office immediately stepped up and we all found a way to put officers in every school.

“We’ve upgraded cameras and are continuing to do so. We’ve changed all the locks on classroom and building doors. We’ve added the window shades to prevent a shooter from seeing whether people are inside.”

The school district also has established a behavioral threat assessment team at every school in an effort to provide foresight rather than horrifying hindsight, when it comes to someone’s dark social media postings, past mental health issues or behavioral problems and firearms access, Vazquez said.

Daliana Goins, coordinator of counseling and intervention services, said the district also has added several social workers who can bridge the gaps between a student’s school and home life.

In a message to all employees following the Texas shooting, Superintendent Theresa Axford wrote, in part, “Let’s continue to perfect our system that enables us to identify continued on page 18

he rainbow crosswalks are freshly painted at Duval and Petronia streets and rainbow flags flutter in the warm breeze everywhere.

Key West is stepping out for its annual Pride celebration through June 5.

The colorful collection of people and events features pool parties, theater performances, unparalleled drag shows, a Joan Rivers impersonator, museum tours, boat trips, culinary events, a Saturday street fair and an all-welcome Pride Parade on Sunday.

Of course, everyone’s watching the weather closely. Regardless of Key West’s open-arms attitude and all-welcome One Human Family philosophy, a storm named Agatha is not on the guest list.

“We’re watching the weather closely and hoping for the best,” said officials from the Key West Business Guild, which promotes Key West as a gay destination and coordinates its Pride celebration.

The guild’s monthly luncheon on June 1 kicked off the colorful week, offering plenty of opportunities not just to say gay, but to shout it.

This year’s unofficial Pride slogan is brought to us in part by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who championed the Parental Rights in Education bill, which its opponents quickly nicknamed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill due to its vague prohibition of gender and sexual orientation discussions in elementary schools.

“We’ve had some setbacks this year,” Business Guild president Chuck Licis told the luncheon crowd. “Our kids are impacted. Our trans community is impacted. So in Key West, we don’t say gay, we shout it. And Key West does this very well, coming together to make a statement to Tallahassee and the country.”

The luncheon featured two transgender speakers, as well Florida House candidate Adam Gentle, a gay Democrat.

“I know so many trans men and women who live a life alone,” said trans woman Elle Taylor. “But in Key West, they have an entire

community to support them. I thank you for that. I’m always here and willing to fight for everyone.”

Janiece Rodriguez, also a trans woman, spoke about her childhood, her struggles, her new life in Key West and her mission to help others navigate the difficult road.

Rodriguez and Chris McNulty last year co-founded Queer Keys, a nonprofit group for queer and questioning teens. Queer Keys will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a “coming out party” and fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 at Key West Theater.

But back to the fun, flags and festivities.

Friday features the “Just for the Girls” cocktail welcoming party at 3 p.m. at Marrero’s Guest Mansion, 410 Fleming St. Fringe Theater presents “A Fabulous Evening with Lillian Baxter,” created and performed by John Vessels and Jay Schwandt.

Show tunes, lavish costumes and outrageous tales characterize the production scheduled at 7 p.m. June 1-4 at the Little Room Jazz Club, 821 Duval St. In addition, the Waterfront Playhouse at Mallory Square presents the June 3-4 “return” of Joan Rivers, portrayed by impersonator Joe Posa.

Among Saturday’s attractions is the Pride Street Fair, set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., along the 600 to 900 blocks of Key West’s famed Duval Street.

Sunday’s final-day events include the allwelcome Pride Parade showcasing a 100-foot section of Key West’s famed 1.25-mile-long sea-to-sea rainbow flag that stretched from one end of Duval to the other in 2003.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, the parade will head up Duval Street from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. Afterward, participants and spectators can gather for Key West’s famed Tea Dance at the renowned La Te Da at 1125 Duval St. Event information and complete schedule: gaykeywestfl.com/pride

NEW PRIDE FLAG The latest version of the Pride flag features additional colors of black and brown to include gay people of color as well as trans individuals.

“We will be using this flag as well as the traditional rainbow flag on the light poles in the 600-900 block of Duval Street,” said Kevin Theriault, executive director of the Key West Business Guild. “I think the flag that includes black and brown and also incorporates the transgender colors is very appropriate,”

A LOOK BACK AT KEY WEST’S PRIDE & EQUALITY EFFORTS Dear Editor, Decades ago, Jerry Falwell and Anita Bryant rose to notoriety demonizing homosexuals by saying God had created an entire group of people who were hell-bent on molesting children. That frightful fiction earned them big TV ratings — and even bigger vaults of cash.

Some believed it, unaware that loved ones in their own families and communities were secretly homosexual. But the “anti-gay panic” had real-world costs. It putrified into a cultural poison and, for decades, Americans have been terrorized with bullying, harassment, discrimination, bashing, blackmail, firing, compelled to suicide — and worse.

In response to the hate we saw, a few dozen locals followed Harvey Milk’s advice to live true to yourself, reject shame and declare your Pride.

And declare your Pride joyfully in an annual parade of diversity and inclusion for all to see.

So, in June 1982, we marched up Duval Street’s sidewalk (no permit) with decorated dogs (and a parrot), singing, dancing and giving hugs and beads to onlookers who, almost uniformly, responded with support. Not much more than a fun-loving stroll, it was Key West’s modest first Pride “parade.”

We are truly blessed to live in a loving, inclusive and progressive community like Key West.

And we have come a very long way in 40 years.

Finally, there are hard-won legal protections against discrimination in housing, employment, finances and even marriage for LGBTQ+ citizens.

And Key West Pride Parades are now legendary.

But, let’s be clear: it’s not enough.

It’s not enough that we can’t be unjustly fired — while indigenous peoples are trapped in remote reservations of crippling poverty and zero opportunity.

It’s not enough that we can’t be denied housing — while women (the heart of humanity) have no equal protections under America’s laws, and are not only in limited control of their own bodies, but told to work for 80% of their worth.

(BTW: Congress passed the ERA in 1972; Florida legislators repeatedly vote it down).

It’s not enough that we can get married, while people of color have been shackled to the bottom of the barrel for centuries and denied access to the American dream on every level, all while being subjected to the most brutal and heinous of inhumane actions. Perpetrated for power, profit, racism (or all three). We should be ashamed and we should re-motivate ourselves.

We should all do everything in our power to guarantee everyone’s equal rights.

Because none of us has equal rights until all of us have equal rights.

une 1 starts a six-month hurricane season that forecasters say could bring 14 to 21 named storms due to La Niña and warmer Atlantic temperatures.

Remnants from Hurricane Agatha, which made landfall in Mexico as a Category 2 on May 27, could bring several inches of rain to the Florida Keys later this week and into the weekend.

Jon Rizzo, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Key West, said there’s increasing confidence that a tropical depression could form by Thursday, June 2 or Friday, June 3 over the northwest Caribbean Sea. The latest track by the National Hurricane Center shows South Florida and the Florida Keys as the main target.

Rizzo said the storm is expected to move northeast rather slowly, causing heavy rain for the Keys.

“Conditions are not ideal for strong development,” Rizzo said, adding that it could be a tropical depression or a weak tropical storm.

If elevated to a tropical storm, it would be the first named storm of the 2022 Atlantic season. Storms with sustained winds below 39 mph are referred to as tropical depressions, while storms with sustained winds of at least 39 mph would be on the lower end of a tropical storm.

Hurricane Agatha made landfall just west of Puerto Angel, Mexico on May 27.

unprecedented to see a Pacific storm causing some disruption to the southeast U.S. this time of year, when currents aren’t necessarily moving west into the open Pacific Ocean.

“This is not something we would normally see during the peak of hurricane season where we keep our eyes more to the east and southeast,” Rizzo said.

Monroe County Emergency Management urged residents to review their storm preparedness plans, especially those in areas prone to flooding from rainfall.

In the Keys, a hurricane conference for the tourism industry on May 26 welcomed Jamie Rhome, deputy director for the National Hurricane Center, as one of several guest speakers. He joined the NHC in 1999 as a marine forecaster. He was then elevated to hurricane specialist in 2006.

Rhome noted that between 2017 to 2021, there were about 100 named storms and 45 named hurricanes. Sixteen of those made landfall in the U.S. Rhome said the average number of cyclones per year is going up, but what’s worse is the impact storms are having upon landfall. Rhome attributed that to

warming Atlantic waters, sea level rise and more moisture in the air.

“I’m an avid free diver and I lobster, and I'm telling you even as a nonscientist, the ocean is warming. That is the fuel for a hurricane,” he said.

And Rhome said storms are forming close to land and rapidly intensifying.

“Most powerful hurricanes that strike the U.S. develop rapidly basically right off the coast,” he said. “The notion that you have days and days, you have to drop that. It’ll catch you off guard at some point.”

A recent survey by AAA heard from roughly 5,000 residents regarding the upcoming hurricane season. A quarter of Floridians say they wouldn’t heed evacuation warnings. Among the reasons were the lack of a safe option for their pets, uncertainty of where to evacuate to and financial reasons.

Two-in-five respondents said high prices and availability of gas would make them less willing to evacuate their homes if recommended to do so.

“Prices at the pump are likely to remain high throughout the summer,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. “So, if you’re worried about evacuation costs, it may be a good idea to start setting aside some money now.”

The survey by AAA found that 27% of Floridians are more concerned about this year’s hurricane season.

As hurricane season begins, Rizzo said, people should know the risks and vulnerabilities associated with their properties. He also recommends visiting monroecountyem.com or floridadisaster. org to learn more on how to prepare.

“Get a plan. That’s the mission,” he said.

he scent of sulfur from struck matches fills the small, stone space inside the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto, known locally as “the hurricane grotto” at the Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea. And with the season’s first storm possibly on the horizon, all candles will soon flicker inside the stone chapel that was built 100 years to protect the island from the wrath of a hurricane.

The church recently celebrated a Mass outside at the grotto in honor of its 100th anniversary.

The structure was designed by Sister Louis Gabriel and built with natural rock that was found on the church site. Its dedication on May 25, 1922 was meant to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, as well as the 25th anniversary of Sister Gabriel’s entrance into the religious vocation.

“Contributions that came from Sister Gabriel’s many friends in the community made the construction possible,” according to the church

website. “Sister Gabriel had survived three major hurricanes since her arrival in Key West 25 years prior on Aug. 25, 1897. Because of the devastation and heartache she had witnessed as a result of these terrible storms, her deep desire to keep Key West and its residents safe from future storms generated her passion to build the grotto to seek protection from our Blessed Mother Mary.

“Tradition tells us that Sister Gabriel is said to have remarked on that dedication day that as long as the grotto stood, ‘Key West would never experience the full brunt of a hurricane.’ And as all residents can attest, there has not been a severe storm on the island since the erection of the grotto in 1922. This grotto is featured in guided tours of Key West and television news crews broadcast from in front of the grotto when a hurricane threatens.

“More importantly, it has become the center of prayer in advance of hurricanes and tropical storms. Masses are celebrated.

Candles are lit.”

And, God willing, storms stay away.

his year marks the ninth installment of the Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards. Over that span, more than 1,000 winners have been named, while over $120,000 has been raised for local nonprofits. Earlier this week, we asked Key West Weekly owner and publisher Britt Myers which elements of the Bubbas he’s most proud of, and it was an easy answer.

“Obviously when you are able to raise money for any of our local nonprofits, it always gives you a broader sense of community and reminds you of what’s important here at home,” Myers said. “Outside of that, my favorite part of the Bubbas has always been the voting process and the winners’ gala. Last year our interactive voting map showed participation from six continents and over 40 countries.

And our annual winners’ gala is one evening that brings together so many different people, from all different walks of life, to laugh with each other and celebrate our community. he setup for Key West High School’s graduation ceremony has been a little different in recent years, due to COVID protocols and the pending replacement of the school’s football stadium, which hosts the commencement ceremony.

On May 27, the Class of 2022 sat in the football bleachers overlooking their families and friends, who were camped in groups on the field with blankets and lawn chairs.

Principal Larry Schmiegel spoke of his pride in the class that endured more than two years of social distancing, canceled events and online learning.

Superintendent Theresa Axford spoke to the graduates before valedictorian Jonibek Muhsinov and salutatorian Siddharth Singh addressed their class with humor, nostalgia and wishes for the future.

e have officially hit the month of June, nearing the halfway point of a turbulent 2022. For most Americans, a lingering “calm before the storm” is clouding optimism, as items like inflation, Russian aggression and “hot button” debates over gun control and abortion dominate our daily lives. With that said, there have been plenty of willing participants eager to play the part of villain so far in 2022, but some have been willing to take the role to another level, earning a place on our…

MIDYEAR LOSER AWARDS FOR 2022

10. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

Why? People get divorced every day, yet we are supposed to care about two ultra-wealthy, white people fighting over who pooped on whose bed and how the world was deprived of another Jack Sparrow movie. In the end, a Hollywood legend has been reduced to watching his dirty laundry unfold on a glorified segment of Judge Judy.

9. Elon Musk. Why? It’s hard to associate the world’s wealthiest man with the label of loser, but his latest attempt to purchase Twitter was a reminder of just how far removed the elite class is from everyday people.

The world is facing crises, from the effects of a global pandemic to inflation woes, and these guys made more money over the same span of time that many lost everything. Read the room. Now is not the time to shoot your buddies into space.

8. Cryptocurrency. Why? If you bought it, you’re likely regretting it, including cities like Miami that invested heavily in their own version of the virtual currency. The jury is still out on whether the entire crypto platform is a pyramid scheme.

7. The United States Supreme Court.

No matter where you stand on Roe vs. Wade, we can all agree the supreme law of the land should not have more leaks than your grandmother’s bridge club.

6. Will Smith. If you don’t know why, you obviously do not follow pop culture, the Academy Awards or know a single TikTok dance move. But the “slap heard around the world” shattered the image of a once-beloved Hollywood star, who attempted to take on the role of victim immediately after reducing a beautiful night at the Oscars into a 3 a.m. brawl at the local Waffle House.

5. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Why? Her antics are so bizarre and laced with bigotry, she managed to overshadow her pals Lauren Boebet and Matt Gaetz on this list. Add to that the fact that she and some guy famous for

owning My Pillow were directly advising the president of the United States during an attempted coup on our democracy and you start to wonder how hard it is to run the greatest superpower on the globe.

4. The National Basketball Association. Why? Because a league that eagerly launches itself into a myriad of domestic social stances has yet to address its ties to China and the $10 billion that NBA owners personally have invested there. Also, NBA China is valued at $5 billion, of which ESPN owns 5%, possibly explaining why the world’s largest sports media company took years to begin covering this topic. And the NBA’s China issue actually overshadows Hollywood and many other major American corporations like Nike and Visa — which remain silent on China’s tragic human rights record.

3. Uvalde School Police Chief. Why? Because it would be hard to imagine a more tragic story than what came out of Uvalde, Texas in May. The mass shooting that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers rattled our nation, but questions remain about the response time and measures of the Uvalde school police, led by Chief Pete Arredondo. Details of the flawed response by Arredondo continue to raise serious questions.

2. Coca-Cola. Why? Ok, we lied. We said the NBA overshadowed everyone on the China issue, but that doesn’t include Coke, which claims that “human rights is a fundamental company value.” Evidently that’s true unless you need to sponsor the 2022 Olympic Games in China — home to over a billion and a half Coke consumers. Coke happily overlooked human rights abuses in Xinjiang and other abuses across the communist superpower to appease profits.

1. Vladimir Putin. Why? Because who wakes up in the morning and says, “You know what? I think I’ll join Hitler and other historical architects of genocide in the history books … all because I’m a relic stuck in Cold War era policies from the 1960s.”

It was still cloudy and the deck, table and tree were all wet, which somehow brought out the red in the legs of the mourning doves in the backyard. It didn’t waste time, but started going at the pile immediately with these fast, full-body, pile-driver pecks, sending a serious portion of the feed flying over the side of the feeder. I timed it and the bird was hitting the seed pile about 95 times a minute.

4:24 p.m. A mourning dove came in and landed on the broomstick over the feeder. It was tentative at first, but clearly looking to make a move, and it was obvious how it was going to go. A Eurasian collared-dove weighs about seven ounces. A mourning dove weighs about four. Mass always wins. Except when it doesn’t.

The Eurasian collared-dove stabbed at the mourning dove with its bill, but the mourning dove held its ground. The Eurasian collared-dove threw its wings up and lunged at the mourning dove, but the smaller bird just crouched lower. Then the mourning dove threw itself at the collared-dove and the collared-dove fled, flapping two or three times until it landed on the nearby string of lights that stretched between the house and the Christmas palm.

Victory for the little guy. Or maybe gal. It’s really hard to sex doves.

The deposed Eurasian collared-dove faced the other direction for a few moments, then turned around and faced the feeder, looking, no doubt, as bullies everywhere do, for vulnerabilities and ways to exploit them.

The mourning dove was making its effort at the seed pile, though its technique varied. Its pecks were also about 95 a minute, but instead of a full head-up-and-down cycle with each peck, it only lifted its head a third of the way up. Every 15 pecks, though, it did a full cycle, throwing its head back, maybe needing to gulp down an accumulation of seeds all at once.

4:26 p.m. The Eurasian collared-dove attempted a return, jumping from the wire to the feeder, but the mourning dove stabbed at it with its bill when it got close, and the collared-dove U-turned in midair and retreated to the string of lights.

4:27 p.m. The collared-dove flew at the feeder again. This time the mourning dove, maybe having had its fill, ceded the territory and took off without a fight. The collared-dove seemed a little nonplussed by its own success, but after a moment returned to full-bodied pecking.

Traffic slowly increased in the yard. There were now two additional Eurasian collared-doves, three mourning doves, and a common ground dove down on the damp wood of the deck. One of the mourning doves flew up and deposed the Eurasian collared-dove.

Then one of the Eurasian collared-doves from the deck flew up and deposed the mourning dove.

The common ground dove, weighing a third of what a mourning dove weighs, and a sixth of what a Eurasian collared-dove weighs, mostly minded its own business. For a while anyhow. And then it leaped up and flew to the feeder. I was waiting for the hugeby-comparison collared-dove to attempt to eighty-six the ground dove, but it didn’t. The two just pecked at the seed side by side for a while, until a mourning dove came in and chased them out.

4:32 p.m. The Eurasian collared-doves and the mourning doves had been leaping up and leaving the yard like sped-up smoke. The only bird left was the common ground dove, which lurked under the table, trying to see how things were going to play out.

4:33 p.m. The common ground dove made its way up to the stump, its cinnamon wingtips flashing as it flew. Then it walked slowly down the broomstick with all the wariness of a sailor walking the plank, stopping at the end and looking around, possibly unwilling to take the risk.

4:34 p.m. The common ground dove dropped down to the feeder, looked around one last time, then finally committed, poking its stubby little bill into the pile, and hammering, by my count, at a slightly slower 80 pecks a minute. The bird was jumpy, stopping periodically to look around. I thought it was too nervous to get much down, but four minutes later the ground dove was still going at it.

Eight minutes later I wondered where they were putting it all. But then a jet came in low, and I looked up to see the name Delta on the belly, and when I looked back the feeder was empty, swinging slowly in the wind.

Those may be the best combined seasons ever.

THE MIAMI HEAT, for whom my neighbor, Sam, and I root for almost every game the team plays, finally lost a fourth game of a best fourof-seven playoff series. The big seventh game was with Boston and the final score was 100-96 Boston. It could have been a different result if a 16-seconds-left three-point shot by Jimmy Butler had gone through. Not to fault Butler, though.

He scored 35 points.

Boston begins the best-four-of-seven championship at San Francisco on Thursday, June 2, opposing Golden State.

I agree with Heat coach Eric Spoelstra. You don’t wait five minutes to negate a three-point goal because Heat player Max Strus stepped a fraction of an inch out of bounds. Three more points at that time might have made a different result. I don’t agree with Spoelstra’s substitute policy, though.

Spoelstra played P.J. Tucker and Tyler Herro (7 minutes, 0 points) only in the first half. Other bench players who have normally played creditable minutes – Duncan Robinson, Caleb Martin and Dwayne Dedmon – played not at all.

THERE WERE PLENTY OF other super sports on Sunday.

The French Open tennis tournament was just getting to its good matches. It was on, beginning at 6 a.m., if you were interested. There were golf tournaments, the PGA Charles Schwab Challenge final round, the LPGA Bank of Hope MatchPlay finals and the final round of the Kitchenaid Senior PGA championship. Enough for any lover of the game.

There were other sports events on the tube on the real Memorial Day – if you were interested. You didn’t have to be bored.

MARCUS ERICSSON HAD NOT been there before – in the winner’s circle of Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 – but he certainly knew what to do.

The race before 325,000 patrons and millions more on TV had been exciting from start to finish.

There were a dozen or so accidents, one when former NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson’s car blew a tire with six laps to go. That brought out a red flag to stop all action. A few minutes later, the remaining cars lined up behind Ericsson, who a few laps previously had been in seventh place.

The unluckiest of drivers was Scott Dixon, who during the race set the record for most laps to lead the 500. Late in the race, as the leader, he went to the pits to replenish gasoline. But, as he entered the pits, to get the fuel, he drove too fast and was penalized with an extra trip to his pits. That allowed a series of drivers, including Johnson, to get a lap or two in first place.

Ericsson was assigned first at the beginning of the final two laps. His only challenges came from Pato O’Ward, who told an announcer that if he had seriously tried to pass Ericsson, “he would have put me in the wall.” He finished second.

I ALSO WATCHED MEMORIAL DAY weekend’s other big auto race: the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, North Carolina. I have been to several Indianapolis 500s (maybe a half dozen) and only a NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, New York. But thanks to television, I’ve become a NASCAR fan.

In the past, some drivers have tried unsuccessfully to run in both races. None this year.

This was as exciting a Coca-Cola 600 as there has been, according to those who know. It took a pair of overtimes and, of course, the race ended with a wreck. That left it for Kenny Hamlin to circle the carnage and claim the victory. Hamlin said on television, “That was the last big one that’s not on my resume.” It is now. And the first two slots are on Joe Gibbs Racing’s resume as Kyle Busch finished second.

When speaking with the Keys Weekly on May 31, Axford added, “The shooter in this case was a loner who was disgruntled over not graduating. He had been out of school for a number of months.

These types of students must be followed and assisted when they drop out.”

Lefere added that fences around all schools have been upgraded, in many cases, heightened from a 4-foot chain link fence to a 6-foot one.

“From a physical standpoint, I think everything is in place,” Lefere said. “Now we just need to maintain it, upgrade it when necessary and train staff to follow the protocols that are in place.”

Fences continue to concern Sheriff Rick Ramsay, who has spoken with Axford and school board chair John Dick and will meet with them next week.

“Any 14- to 19-year-old kid can climb a chain-link fence,” he told the Keys Weekly, urging the school district to install wrought-iron fencing that curves outward at the top to prevent climbing.

The federal government uses a similar style fence around sensitive properties.

“Is there a cost? Yes. But is our kids’ and teachers’ safety worth that price?”

“After Parkland, the sheriff’s office did an in-depth analysis of all schools and provided the results to the school district,” Ramsay said. “A lot of the measures were taken, but not all. I’ve also been in touch with Lt. David Smith, my director of school resource officers. He’s going to get with all his officers to see where we can do things better.”

The sheriff will meet in the coming week with Axford and others to discuss school security and continue the beneficial partnerships between schools and law enforcement.

Vazquez commended those partnerships, saying that when he attends training throughout the state, he often encounters school administrators at odds with local law enforcement agencies.

“Thankfully, that’s just not the case here at all,” Vazquez said.

ow does a kid who grew up on an ostrich farm in Georgia end up singing, playing guitar and writing songs in Key West?

His grandfather inspired him.

Jason Lamson attributes his musical interest and career to his Georgia grandfather, Russell, “or, as some called him, ‘The Reverend,’ despite his less than holy ways,” Lamson says.

“The Reverend taught me about creativity in music,” Lamson said. “He was always singing old standards and hymns and had a habit of changing the lyrics to suit his mood or make a more entertaining version. He was a natural storyteller and a loyal friend, husband, father and grandfather.”

Lamson describes the Reverend endearingly as a man who “didn’t take no s--t from nobody.”

The Reverend died in 2009, but his music and legend live on in his grandson, who has played nearly every stage in Key West.

The Jason Lamson Band will take the stage at Key West Theater on Saturday, June 18 at 7 p.m. for a downhome mix of good music.

In addition to Southern vocalist Lamson, the band features Andy Westcott and Rick Fusco on electric guitar, Claire Finley on electric bass and Randy Morrow on drums as part of Key West Theater’s Summer Sounds: A Local-ish Concert Series running from June through August.

Lamson is described as a “soulfilling, Southern vocalist fusing island style, down-home soul, and a touch of funky personality to create a unique sound filling the live music scene of Key West,” states his website - jasonlamsonmusic.com.

He and his wife arrived in Key West in 2014, when Lamson was hired as in-house musician and head of entertainment at the Green Room bar, where he worked for a year. He and his wife even lived above the music venue for a few weeks when their first Key West apartment fell through.

Lamson made a name for himself in the Key West music scene playing at the Green Room almost every night of the week for a year.

When his contract ended, he was ready to do his own thing.

“Now I’m writing songs,” he said, “coming into my own, and really finding my groove with my music.”

ith flags at half-staff and fluttering in front of hundreds of gravestones, the USS Maine Memorial and the Key West Cemetery hosted the annual Memorial Day military remembrance. More than 100 people packed the Monday morning service.

Retired veterans and active duty military, including Capt. Beth Regoli, commander of Naval Air Station Key West, spoke in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country. The Navy honor guard offered a gun salute while representatives of various veterans groups placed wreaths in front of the Maine Memorial.

The Key West Veterans Memorial Garden at Bayview Park hosted another well-attended service later the same day. The memorial garden includes Key West’s Vietnam Living Memorial in honor of those who returned from Vietnam, forever changed. The garden also includes the Forgotten Soldier Memorial in remembrance of the more than 120 Key West African-Americans who served in a Union regiment during the Civil War. — Mandy Miles

O

ne hour a week makes a huge difference, and volunteers are always welcome every Friday morning, when teams clean up a designated area of the island.

On May 27, in one hour, 13 volunteers picked up 39 pounds of trash, 13 pounds of recycling and 1 1/2 gallons of cigarette butts.

Please do your part and deposit your butts in an approved receptacle or take them with you as they can easily end up in our beautiful waters.

Special thanks to Harpoon Harry’s owner Ron Heck for the post-cleanup beverages he provided to all the volunteers.

A troubling number of plastic bags also have been included in recent hauls. Please remember your reusable bags when shopping so we can keep the plastic off the streets, parking lots and most importantly out of the water.

The city of Key West and its residents ask everyone to do their part to help keep Key West beautiful. With simple steps like making sure you bag your trash before putting it in your Waste Management trash cans or Dumpsters, and making sure the lids on Dumpsters are closed, will keep a lot of trash from blowing into the streets.

Please pick up around your home or apartment complex.

Every piece of trash picked up is one less that may end up in the ocean that surrounds and sustains our island community.

It is not just the large items you can see easily when you are walking, but the smaller items such as bottle caps and cigarette butts that are collected by the volunteers that make the biggest difference.

All are invited to join the Friday morning cleanups from 8 to 9 a.m. Parking is provided and all volunteers receive a parking pass when needed for metered or residential parking spots. See the calendar here for Friday cleanup locations.

he Key West Lady Conchs softball team had a historic 2022 season. They are the first softball team in Key West High School history to make it to the 4A State Championship, where the final four teams play. With a record of 19-4-1, the Conchs had the potential to go all the way. The entire city of Key West was behind them.

On Wednesday, May 25, as the Lady Conchs departed for Clermont, the Key West High School band and cheerleaders lined the walkway chanting the school’s fight song. At the end of the walkway, the team was greeted with love and optimism from family, friends and what seemed like the entire Key West community. Superintendent of Schools Theresa Axford and Key West Mayor Teri Johnston, herself a college softball player, wished the team luck at states.

As the bus pulled away from the high school, we could hear the crowd. We were led by the police and fire chiefs as well as a police motorcade and fire truck. As we drove down Flagler Avenue, people on the sides of the road yelled and honked, along with students at Grace Lutheran school. As we made our way to Stock Island, people continued to line the road with work and utility trucks from the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority and Keys Energy Services, all wishing us luck. Workers in a Keys Energy bucket truck held aloft the 2022 banner for the Lady Conchs.

It truly was an inspiring and incredible sight. A sign and cheering fans greeted the team in Big Coppitt. The students and teachers of Sugarloaf School were on their field, facing the highway and cheering with posters, streamers and whistles as the Lady Conchs passed by waving back. The Conchs played their hearts out with the support of their community behind them.

On May 26, Key West faced the Lake Wales Highlanders in the state semifinal game. The Conchs let the game get away from them early in the first inning. Pitcher Chloe Gilday gave up a lead-off home run followed by an error that would allow a second run to cross the plate in the first. Now the Conchs had to play catch-up. Key West scored its one and only run in the bottom of the second inning when Miesha Hernandez hit a nodoubt home run to left field. That is where the bats ended for Key West, tallying only four hits the entire game. Scarlet Niles led the team with two hits, and Hernandez and Chloe Knowles each had one. The next four innings would be scoreless for both teams. In the top of the seventh, the Highlanders hit yet another home run, making the final score 3-1.

Gilday started on the mound for the Conchs, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out five in 6.1 innings of work. Neveah Arnold came in to finish the game in the top of the seventh with one out, giving up no hits and no runs. Despite the loss, the legion of Conch fans in attendance from across the state comforted the team. Conch fans easily outnumbered those from nearby Lake Wales.

“We had a great season and I am very happy to know I ended off my senior year doing something no other Key West High School softball team has been able to accomplish,” senior captain Marina Goins said. “This team continued to improve over the entire season, setting the foundation for future Conch generations.”

The Key West Lady Conchs have three players who will go on to play at the collegiate level.

Isabella Perez will attend Florida International University and play Division 1 softball for the Panthers. Marina Goins is attending Pensacola State to play for the Pirates. Yahaira Williams is attending Florida Atlantic University and also playing Division 1 softball for the Owls.

I

t’s no secret that real estate prices in the Keys are at an all-time high. Apparently, the same goes for lighthouses.

In bidding wars that quickly narrowed to contests between two bidders, auctions for the Sombrero Key Lighthouse, Carysfort Reef Lighthouse and American Shoal Lighthouse all ended within one week of one another. Though the Sombrero Key Lighthouse originally opened with the closest auction end date, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA)’s auction rules allowed bidders to extend each auction for 24 hours with every subsequent bid past the auction’s original end date.

Carysfort Reef Light off Key Largo was the first to close, settling on a final price of $415,000 on May 16. Sombrero Key Light off Marathon followed a day later, closing at $575,000. Six days later, American Shoal Light off Sugarloaf Key capped a record auction week with a final price tag of $860,000. Per the terms of the U.S. General Services Administration, the identities of the winners and other bidders were not disclosed on the auction website. The winners will now have 45 days to complete the transactions.

Built in 1852, Carysfort is the oldest of the three, followed by Sombrero in 1858 and American Shoal in 1880. Though they were functional navigational beacons until as recently as 2015, the dawn of GPS and other navigation instruments, along with the structures’ ages, eventually rendered them redundant or unfit for duty.

According to officials, the new owners will face complicated and extremely costly paths ahead as they look to maintain, restore or repurpose their new properties.

For starters, all three structures will need serious work, to the tune of millions of dollars.

Reports prepared by the U.S. Coast Guard in 2010 detailed rehabilitation costs north of $2 million “required in the near term” for each lighthouse, with additional “deferrable” costs of between $80,000 and $535,000.

Among the suggested immediate repairs: cleaning and coating metal struts, replacing broken and deteriorated tie rods, repairing holes and cracks in catwalks and walls, and replacing missing portholes and windows.

Given that the structures are now 12 years older and that costs for materials and labor have risen significantly, the repair costs will be much higher today.

dedicated to saving and preserving six reef lighthouses in the state. Though he would love to see a full restoration of all the recently sold structures, he said he understands that owners face an uphill battle as they navigate the interplay of several agencies and the practicality of such significant work within protected areas of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS).

And in his opinion, “even before 2015, (the lighthouses) weren’t getting proper maintenance.”

The National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 lays out a mechanism for the disposal of federally-owned historic light stations that no longer serve a need. Under the act, the properties may be transferred to federal agencies, state and local governments, nonprofits or educational agencies at no cost.

The recipients are expected to maintain the historic structures and make them available to the public for education, park, recreation or historic preservation purposes. Such was the case for Islamorada’s Alligator Reef Light, given to the Islamorada-based nonprofit Friends of the Pool in September 2021.

However, said Martin, a private auction removes many of these safeguards for the historic structures.

“When you buy them at auction, you can do anything you want as far as opening them to the public,” he said. “You don’t even have to restore it, it’s just that if you do … you’re supposed to go through the state’s historic preservation office and go by the guidelines of the national parks.”

Further complicating matters are the regulations in place to protect the corals and ocean floor under and around each lighthouse, regulated by the FKNMS. Only the structures are conveyed in each auction, not the submerged land underneath, and two of the three – Carysfort and Sombrero – are located in specially-protected Sanctuary Preservation Areas (SPAs). Generally speaking, activities that alter or construct any material on the seabed or harm coral aren’t allowed, and SPAs have even stricter regulations.

Using boats to carry heavy equipment, materials and workers through the shallow waters around the lighthouse is already a tricky proposition, and delays due to poor weather can quickly rack up a hefty tab throughout the restoration process.

On the other hand, if the lighthouses are left untouched for long enough, pieces will eventually begin falling into the ocean, damaging legally protected sanctuary resources with unwanted pollution.

Joanne Delaney is the FKNMS resource protection and permit coordinator. She said it’s difficult to say what activities could be permitted at the lighthouses until owners approach her with very specific plans and goals in mind.

“We have a whole bunch of regulations in the sanctuary that are designed to meet specific resource protection goals,” said Delaney.

“Not every regulation in the sanctuary would necessarily be applicable to activities that might occur at these reef lights, but some probably would.

“There’s a lot of conjecture about what might happen, but we can’t really say whether something could be permitted or not until someone actually proposes it.”

A discussion of the sales would be remiss without addressing the elephant in the room: could lighthouse AirBnBs become a new fad in the Florida Keys? Though the experts who spoke with Keys Weekly all refrained from offering a concrete “no,” the difficulty and cost of threading the needle through the requirements of so many agencies while completing expensive repairs may not be worth a few hundred dollars a night.

“Is it possible? Maybe. Is it going to be practical and implementable for your average person? I don’t know,” said Delaney. “You just have to think about the location. … This thing is in the middle of the ocean.”

Keys Weekly reached out to GSA to attempt to contact the lighthouses’ new owners and further clarify their obligations, but had not received a response as of press time.

BRUCE BOROS DAY IS JUNE 6, 2022 A LOOK BACK: 5 YEARS AFTER THE HONOR & 26 MONTHS OF COVID Three years ago, no one would have guessed that Bruce Boros would find himself at the epicenter of a pandemic in the Florida Keys. After all, Boros is a cardiologist, and seemed quite content running his Advanced Urgent Care units in Key West, Marathon, and Islamorada. In the midst of everything that happened (and was happening), Boros and his team kept their eyes on one thing: Their patients. Since March, 2020, Boros and his team have saved the lives of hundreds and minimized the pain and hospitalization of thousands more. AUC tested more individuals in Monroe County than any other single Entity until widespread test kits became available. The record speaks for itself.

Boros and AUC used every available medication they felt would help their Patients. They remembered their Hippocratic Oath, which includes the following passage: “I will use my power to help the sick to the best of my ability and judgement; I will abstain from harming or wronging any man by it...”

In hindsight, Boros and his team could have chosen an easier path: Only utilize medications and protocols that the CDC, FDA, NID, and NIAID were propagating, and fall in line with what those agencies, Big Pharma, and the Mainstream Media were recommending. Life would have been easier, and the threats posted against them on social media would never have happened.

Also recall that at this time those agencies were targeting physicians who did not fall in line with their recommendations: Vaccine mandates; and no other treatments like Ivermectin, Hydroxychloroquine, Monoclonal Antibodies, or others are to be considered. Example: The Great Barrington Declaration, drafted by three of the most renowned scientists on Virology in the World, one from Oxford, one from Harvard, and one from Stanford, were attacked by these agencies for daring to suggest that the most vulnerable be treated first.

In its place, 5 year-olds were being vaccinated, Covid-infected patients sent to nursing homes, entire communities/industries shut down, masks mandated (Johns Hopkins: “... masks are only 0.2% effective”), and other measures all added to the human cost – especially among our children.

We may never know the damage this Pandemic imposed on an entire generation. However, we can take solace in knowing that there are some among us who maintained the sanctity of the Doctor/Patient Relationship, remembered their Hippocratic Oath, and didn’t succumb to pressure.

And the result is that some of us are still alive because of their courage. Something to consider this coming June 6th and beyond.

DETAILS EMERGE IN PARASAIL ACCIDENT COLLISION WITH SEVEN MILE BRIDGE LEAVES ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED ALEX RICKERT

etails continue to emerge in reports investigating a parasailing accident that left one woman dead and her son and a nephew with injuries on May 30.

According to FWC law enforcement’s 24-hour report released on the evening of May 31, 33-year-old Supraja Alaparthi was taking a threeseater parasail flight along with her 10-year-old son Sriakshith Alaparthi and 9-year-old nephew Vishant Sadda.

A strong gust of wind “pegged” their parasail, a term used to describe when a parasail becomes controlled by the weather conditions instead of the towing vessel and begins to impede the safe operation of the towing vessel by becoming a sail.

With the parasail pegged, the boat’s captain intentionally cut the line tethering the three victims, who dropped to the water and were dragged by the freed parasail across the surface until it collided with the old Seven Mile Bridge.

Marathon captain John Callion was conducting a charter under the bridge when he saw the parasail flying with a storm on the horizon around 5:30 p.m. His trip soon turned into a rescue mission as he saw the line detach and the three victims dragged through the water all the way to the bridge.

“When I pulled up to the scene, I thought that we were just going to deal with these people that got beaten up on the drag,” said Callion, estimating that the victims were dragged between one and two miles in the water. “When I had to get to them, I had to drive around Pigeon Key, so I didn’t see them actually get in contact with the bridge.”

Callion arrived to find Supraja and Vishant unresponsive. Working with his passengers to cut the three victims free from their harnesses, he immediately made his way to Sunset Grille as his passengers began CPR on the pair.

“I was considering leaving before the wind got bad,” Callion told Keys Weekly. “It didn’t take me five minutes to get up next to these people. … By the time I pulled up next to them, in probably less than three minutes we had everybody in the boat and we were on the way. One kid wasn’t breathing and my customer got him to breathe again.

“It was horrible, as bad as you can imagine. … Honestly, when I was pulling up I thought that we were going to pull them in the boat and pass them off to the parasail boat. I didn’t realize people were dying.”

Once on land, Supraja Alaparthi was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her son suffered minor injuries, while Sadda was eventually transported to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami for additional treatment. Sadda’s parents indicated to Callion on May 31 that he is expected to make a full recovery.

Sources indicated to Keys Weekly that the parasail company involved in the incident was Marathon-based Lighthouse Parasail. When contacted for comment, co-owner Alex Winter confirmed his company’s involvement but otherwise declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, stating that this was a “time for grieving for the families.”

Highly praised – with good reason – for his rescue efforts, Callion said he felt it was “part of (his) duty being out there.”

“Yesterday was life-changing for me,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

“My heart and prayers go out to the victims, I truly did all I could do. …

Never take life for granted. Things can change in a second.”

“Our condolences are with the family and loved ones of those affected by Monday’s accident,” said Coast Guard Capt. Jason Ingram in a statement. “This was a tragedy for a family seeking to enjoy their visit to the Florida Keys. Our team, and our partners at Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, are investigating the accident to determine the causal factors and mitigate future casualties to make the waterways as safe as possible.”

The story of Spanish Marie

y every account, Marie was quite a woman. Born in 1903 to a Swedish father and Mexican mother, she grew up to be 6 feet tall with olive skin, blue eyes, and long, flowing black hair.

If the stories are to be believed, and there are heaps and gobs of them told about her, she was equal parts charisma and cunning.

As a young girl, she met a man of infamy named Charlie Waite; his family had ties to Key West. Charlie spent time in Havana, which is likely where he met Marie when she was still a young girl. The two married, moved to Miami and bought a boat in 1924. There, Charlie and Marie Waite opened the Miami Academy of Dance. It was Prohibition, and the studio was a front for the family business: rum-running. Charlie Waite was known as the king of the rum runners who brought liquor from the Bahamas and Cuba to a thirsty Florida.

Charlie Waite had the reputation as the kind of smuggler who would not give up his booze without a fight. When the Coast Guard caught up with Waite and his small crew was apprehended in 1927, a failed escape attempt ensued. Two of the three captives were shot and killed, including Charlie, who fell overboard and into Biscayne Bay when a bullet struck his head. His body was never recovered.

The bereaved wife, Marie, stepped in and took over the family business. It was not long before Marie Waite was recognized as the infamous Spanish Marie. It did not take long for Spanish Marie to rise to the top of the rum-running realm operating in the Straits of Florida.

At the height of her rum-running career, which was not a lengthy one, she oversaw 15 boats.

Like her husband, Spanish Marie ran her contraband from the Bahamas and Cuba and delivered it to Key West and South Florida. At first, her smugglers made the run across the Straits of Florida in groups of four. Three boats would be stockpiled with cases of liquor, while the fourth was armed with men ready to fight. Should the Coast Guard arrive and attempt to apprehend the rum runners, the armed boat would engage the government while the other three ships escaped to offload their contraband to speed boats waiting to run the booze to Miami or Key West.

The operation was tried and true with a proven record of success.

When the Coast Guard invested in faster ships capable of outrunning the rum runners, Spanish Marie devised a new plan and equipped all of the boats in her crew with radios. She also installed a pirate radio transmitter in Key West so that the Coast Guard could hear what she was broadcasting through the airwaves. Knowing people were listening, she provided false information to confuse and misguide the gov-

ernment ships working to intercept her rum runners. She also created a secret set of codes spoken in simple Spanish terms that told her people where to go and whom to meet.

By the late months of 1927, she was at the height of her legendary career. But the government was starting to crack her Spanish code, and, on March 12, 1928, her luck came to an end. A load was arriving from Bimini, and, in the middle of the BRAD night, Marie received a phone call saying that the booze had safely arrived. Her lawyer claimed Marie was suffering undue mental trauma. Her bond was increased to $3,000, and the date of arraignment extended.

None of it mattered; she had never planned to appear in court. Spanish Marie and her boats disappeared, along with what was alleged to be $1 million This, however, was not the end of Spanish Marie’s story. Marie remarried and became Mrs. Marie Fritz. Her act did not change much, and she would be arrested from time to time over the next few years.

According to the Dec. 2, 1938 edition of the Miami Herald, Mrs. Marie Fritz, formerly Spanish Marie, had again been arrested on a liquor charge. Prohibition was over but driving a car under the influence was still illegal, and she was found guilty of drunk driving.

While Mrs. Marie Fritz died decades ago, Spanish Marie lives on in Key West – at least in spirit or spirits. Paul Menta, owner and operator of Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, created Bad Bitch Rum – Spanish Marie in her honor. The rum is aged in French oak barrels with a hint of red wine because legend says that the beautifully notorious rum runner used to cut her rum with a little red wine.

Anyone who has lived through even a small storm knows being prepared makes all the difference.

Stay informed. My favorite smartphone weather app is the Max Tracker Hurricane app from WPLG Channel 10, available at the Apple App Store or Google Play. It has great radar, maps and it also provides updates from the National Weather Service.

Be Ready. Have an emergency plan and store obvious supplies such as plenty of water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit.

Important tips: • Have an evacuation route mapped out.

• Keep your car full of gas and check the tires, oil, battery, etc …

• Register those in your family who need special assistance for a county special needs program.
