A recent AAA survey found that 68% of Floridians will take at least one trip in 2022. The largest share, 51%, plan to travel this summer. Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA, said travelers are eager to return to a sense of normalcy. “Travel bookings are surging with people who are tired of being home,” she said. The most popular destinations include beaches, theme parks and cities.

ON THE COVER ‘The Pickpocket’s Daughter’ takes audiences back to 1930s New York City. Local playwright Neal Ruchman wrote the script about his own mother’s life. Opens May 18 at The Studios of Key West. See page 20.

onroe County and the city of Key West soon could be trading some spaces. When county commissioners meet on Wednesday, May 18 in Key West, they’ll discuss a potential swap of the county-owned Higgs Beach for part of the city-owned HAWK Missile site off Government Road. “It doesn’t make much sense for the county to own a beach in the heart of the city,” said County Commissioner Craig Cates, who’s been working with Key West City Manager Patti McLauchlin on the preliminary plans. McLauchlin told the Keys Weekly she’s long had a vision for the whole Higgs Beach area, from the Indigenous Park and Knight Pier to the dog park, beach and playground. Additional agreements could include the city’s use of the countyowned Bayshore Manor property to temporarily house homeless people while the city rebuilds its shelter.

ALSO ON MAY 18… • Commissioner Jim Scholl‘s swearing-in ceremony. Scholl, a former Key West city manager and commander of Naval Air Station Key West, was appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis to fill the seat of Eddie Martinez, who resigned in December, until the November election. Scholl has already filed paperwork to run for the seat in November. • Commissioner David Rice has requested an update on the Poinciana Gardens assisted-living facility, which has a new management team in place and received a financial reprieve last year from the county and the city of Key West. • Officials will discuss a “resolution establishing the Monroe County Employee Housing Rental Program for residential units owned by the county,” states the May 18 agenda. • Another item includes a lease renewal for a county employee already living in a county-owned property and paying $550 per month.

• A $99,000/year contract with Kisinger Campo & Associates will be considered for “pedestrian bridge inspection services.” It remains to be seen whether this contract relates to the historic pedestrian railway bridges that line U.S. 1. There are 23 such bridges and seven are currently closed due to partial collapses and safety concerns. The county commission meets at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18 at the Harvey Government Center in Key West. A complete agenda is available at monroecounty-fl.gov.

A

51-foot sperm whale was the last thing one expected to see on the morning of May 11, laid out in the gravel parking lot of Robbie’s Marina on Stock Island. There it was. A striking but sad sight, with a mouth of biblical proportions. The male sperm whale was found on May 10, beached on the northeast side of the Mud Keys about eight miles offshore of Key West. “We got a call from the marine sanctuary about it (Tuesday), and went out at high tide last night, around 8:30 p.m. and towed it in, arriving at Robbie’s around 3:30 a.m.,” said Sean Morley, owner of TowboatUS in Key West and Key West Harbor Services. “Fortunately, Robbie’s allowed us to bring it in here so biologists can do their work to determine its cause of death.” Biologists from Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and experts from marine mammal stranding groups and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, quickly got to work, making large incisions in the rough skin of the whale to determine its cause of death through a process called a necropsy, which is similar to an autopsy that’s performed on humans. “We really won’t know anything further about what happened until later tonight or tomorrow,” FWC officials told the Keys Weekly on the morning of May 11 at the marina, adding that they are looking into unconfirmed reports of a pod of sperm whales possibly being in the area in recent days. Also, last

week, a juvenile sperm whale was sighted off the Upper Keys earlier in the week. Investigations continue into any potential correlations, FWC officers said. Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales and have one of the widest global distributions of any marine mammal species, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). “They are found in all deep oceans, from the equator to the edge of the pack ice in the Arctic and Antarctic,” the agency says. “They are named after the waxy substance — spermaceti — found in their heads. The spermaceti is an oil sac that helps the whales focus sound. Spermaceti was used in oil lamps, lubricants and candles. “Sperm whales were a primary target of the commercial whaling industry from 1800 to 1987, which nearly decimated all sperm whale populations. The International Whaling Commission placed a moratorium on commercial whaling in 1986. The species is still recovering, and its numbers are likely increasing. The sperm whale is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act,” states the NOAA Fisheries website.

hite hair and a thick Scottish brogue filled the Key West Garden Club last week, when Scottish comedian, actor, musician and artist Sir Billy Connolly filmed an acceptance speech for an award he received from the British Academy of FIlm & Television Arts. Born in a tenement apartment in Glasgow, Scotland, Connolly worked as a welder before becoming a folk singer. In the 1970s, he became a stand-up comedian, topping many UK polls as one of the greatest comedians of all time. As an actor, he performed in films such as “Indecent Proposal” (1993), “Pocahontas” (1995), “Muppet Treasure Island” (1996), “Mrs Brown” (1997) (for which he was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role), “The Boondock Saints” (1999) and others. Connolly, 79, retired in 2018 when his Parkinson’s disease had progressed. He and his wife, Pamela Stephenson, bought a house in Key West in 2016 and now live here full-time.

ne hour a week makes a huge difference, and volunteers are always welcome every Friday morning, when teams clean up a designated area of the island. On May 6, 16 volunteers, including two visitors from Long Island, New York, met at The Restaurant Store at Eaton and White streets, and got to work. In one hour, they removed 55.5 pounds of trash, 16.5 pounds of recycling, four gallons of cigarette butts and a pile of palm fronds. Special thanks to Kathy and Richard Tallmadge for rewarding the volunteers with coffee and snacks after the cleanup. The city of Key West and its residents ask everyone to do their part to help keep Key West beautiful. Simple steps like making sure you bag your trash before putting it in your Waste Management trash cans or Dumpsters, and making sure the lids on Dumpsters are closed will keep a lot of trash from blowing into the streets.

Please pick up around your home or apartment complex. Every piece of trash picked up is one less that may end up in the ocean that surrounds and sustains our island community. It is not just the large items you can see easily when you are walking, but the smaller items such as bottle caps and cigarette butts that are collected by the volunteers that make the biggest difference. All are invited to join the Friday morning cleanups from 8 to 9 a.m. Parking is provided and all volunteers receive a 24-hour bus pass in exchange for their time. See the calendar here for scheduled cleanup locations in May. Call Dorian Patton with any questions at 305-809-3782. May cleanups, from 8 to 9 a.m. Fridays: May 13: N. Roosevelt at Dredgers Key, meet by Denny’s. May 20: Caroline & Margaret streets, meet at the lot across from Harpoon Harry’s. May 27: Duval and South streets, meet at Duval Pocket Park. — Contributed

harlie Crist ordered a Miller Lite and rolled up his sleeves at a Key West bar, enlisting local voters in his effort to “get rid of the clown we have now” in the governor’s office. “I’m here to get rid of him for you,” Crist told a group of Florida Keys Democrats at Sally O’Brien’s Irish pub on May 9. The former Florida governor (2007-2011) and current U.S. representative is running as a Democrat to defeat incumbent Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, a right-wing favorite and a presumed presidential candidate in the coming years, and a formidable incumbent opponent. “What has he done? He’s taken away women’s right to choose. He’s made LGBT kids feel ashamed,” Crist said in Key West. “Housing — what’s he done for that? He raided the Sadowski Fund (created to fund affordable housing). And why? Because he doesn’t give a damn. He doesn’t care. “You don’t have to be a Democrat to realize he’s so far gone. He’s just gone,” Crist said. “He’s chasing that rabbit hole, hard-right, redmeat Republican vote for 2024 and he’s completely taken his eye off the ball of Florida. We’re one-third Republican, one-third Democrat, one-third independent. We’re purple. But he’s lost sight of that because he’s intoxicated about being in the White House. Perfect. Let him go down those rabbit holes. It’s fun as you-know-what to run against this boneheaded guy.” Crist emphasized on Monday that he’s running against DeSantis, not the fellow Democrats he must defeat in the Aug. 23 primary to secure his party’s nomination. “They’re good people; they’re friends of mine, but we have to win,” Crist said. The primary field of Democrats includes Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried and State Sen. Annette Taddeo, who is prohibited from campaigning during the legislature’s two-month session.

Charlie Crist, Democratic candidate for governor, speaks with Florida Keys Democrats during a May 9 campaign stop at Sally O’Brien’s Irish pub. MANDY MILES/Keys Weekly

In launching his gubernatorial campaign one year ago in May 2021, Crist said he wants to bridge the fissure that divides Floridians and restore decency and civility to state government. “Florida has a governor that’s only focused on his future, not yours,” Crist said at the May 2021 press conference announcing his campaign. “He doesn’t care, and unless you can write him a campaign check, you don’t exist. … Unlike this governor and the Republican leadership in Tallahassee, we will listen to our fellow Floridians. … You deserve jobs you can live on, housing you can afford and justice that’s equal.” When asked about Crist’s candidacy in 2021, DeSantis asked, jokingly, “Which party? Do we even know for sure?” The Tampa Bay Times reported in May 2021. After being elected governor as a Republican, Crist became a Democrat in 2012, when he was alienated by Republicans for greeting the newly installed President Barack Obama with a bipartisan hug. He ran for governor again in 2014, this time as a Democrat, but lost by one percentage point to Republican Rick Scott.

T

he partial collapse a month ago of the historic Shark Channel fishing bridge at MM 11 prompted officials to permanently close the bridge, along with six other relics of Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railway that line U.S. 1. “Currently, seven bridges along the Overseas Heritage Trail are closed for safety purposes. The Niles Channel Bridge was closed in 2011 and South Pine Channel Bridge was closed in 2012. The Ohio-Missouri, Ohio-Bahia Honda, Missouri-Little Duck and Lower Sugarloaf were closed in 2014. In April 2022, to ensure the safety of our visitors, DEP closed the Shark Key Bridge along the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail,” Erin McDade, deputy press secretary for FDEP, told the Keys Weekly in a May 5 email. “These seven bridges are closed to all pedestrian and recreation activities, and boaters in the area should exercise caution when nearby. All visitors are asked to adhere to posted signage and respect the barricades. DEP will coordinate with the Florida Department of Transportation to determine the next steps for the closed bridges

along the Overseas Heritage Trail. Visitor safety is our priority as we determine the path forward. We apologize for any inconvenience and will provide updates on the trail’s webpage as they become available.” The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is designed to provide an alternative bicycle and pedestrian route down the Florida Keys. The trail includes 23 historic railway bridges, seven of which are now closed. The Keys Weekly first reported the partial collapse and closure of the Shark Channel Bridge on April 15, and requested copies of inspection and maintenance reports from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, which manages the 23 historic pedestrian bridges that are part of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail. “We’re working on compiling the inspection reports you requested,” McDade told the Keys Weekly on May 5. “The bridges are part of Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway built around the turn of the century. At more than 100 years old, the bridges are no longer used for transportation purposes; however, they are continually evaluated for safety concerns.”

A

t its meeting on May 3 and 4 in Gainesville, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved a number of immediate and potential rule changes for species commonly harvested both recreationally and commercially in the Florida Keys. A rule change for recreationally harvested dolphinfish (mahi-mahi) approved at the March FWC meeting also took effect on May 1. A summary of the rule changes for each species is listed here. For reference purposes, state waters refer to the area from shore to three nautical miles on the Atlantic side of the Keys, and from shore to nine nautical miles on the Gulf side. More information regarding fishing regulations is at MyFWC.com/marine. Alternatively, the Fish Rules app uses an angler’s phone’s GPS to track his or her current location and provide the appropriate regulations in real time. Dolphinfish (mahi-mahi) Effective May 1, the recreational bag limit has been reduced from 10 to 5 fish per person in Atlantic state waters. The private recreational vessel limit has been reduced from 60 to 30 fish per vessel in Atlantic state waters. Blueline Tilefish The 2022 recreational blueline tilefish season will be temporarily modified. Typically open from May 1 through Aug. 31 in Atlantic state and federal waters, the recreational season will close early in state waters this year on July 26. The shortened season matches the season recently announced by NOAA for federal waters and is intended to prevent overfishing over the course of the 2022 season.

Cobia A number of changes to cobia regulations for recreational and commercial anglers will take effect July 1. The minimum size limit will increase from 33 to 36 inches (measured by fork length) for all state waters. The commercial bag limit will be reduced from two to one fish per harvester per day in Atlantic state waters, and both the recreational and commercial vessel limit will be reduced from six to two fish per vessel per day in Atlantic state waters. The changes are intended to match pending regulations in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic federal waters and were deemed necessary after a recent stock assessment determined that the cobia stock is being overfished. Redfish FWC granted initial approval for changes in management regions and regulations for redfish in state waters. Under the proposed changes, the Florida Keys would fall under the Southwest management region, which would see the current eight-fish vessel limit reduced to two fish. Captains and crew would be prohibited from retaining a bag limit while on a for-hire trip, and the off-the-water transport limit would be reduced from six to four fish per person. “With this new management approach, this agency is committed to continuing to work with our partners and stakeholders in finding solutions for redfish,” said FWC chairman Rodney Barreto. A final rule hearing will be held later this year after FWC staff continue to gather input on the proposed rule changes.

ulti-platinum country music star Chris Young headlined the Key West Songwriters Festival with a show at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater on May 6. Recently scoring the most nominations for Academy of Country Music Awards, Young’s career took off in 2006, when he won Season 4 of the TV competition “Nashville Star.” After winning, he was signed to RCA

Records Nashville and released his self-titled debut album the same year. Young’s music career skyrocketed in recent years, with hits such as “I’m Comin’ Over,” “Who I Am With You,” “The Man I Want to Be” and dozens of others. he recently concluded 2022 Key West Songwriters Festival was yet another islandwide hit for fans and musicians alike. Since 1997, the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association and BMI have brought Music Row to Duval Street and beyond, creating a unique environment where industry professionals, songwriters, locals and tourists can experience the best of Nashville in the most intimate of venues. The festival featured more than 50 live performances by the songwriters behind some of the biggest country hits of the past decade. More than 30 of the shows were free to the public and held at local bars, restaurants, hotels and outdoor, island venues. On May 6, the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association sponsored a private event at The Reach Resort to welcome local government leaders as well representatives from the tourism, hospitality and restaurant industries. “The festival has become a breeding ground for new talent and has become one of the most sought-after invites within the

Nashville songwriting community,” states the festival website. “Notable alumni of the festival include Kacey Musgraves, Florida Georgia Line, Luke Combs, Maren Morris and Cole Swindell.” — Mandy Miles BRITT MYERS/Keys Weekly 1. KEY WEST WINS DISTRICTS IN BASEBALL & SOFTBALL CONCHS & LADY CONCHS DEFEAT ST. BRENDAN CAROLINE SMITH www.keysweekly.com

K

ey West High School gained two more district championships this past week, when the Conch softball and baseball teams each won their games in the district finals. On May 5, the Key West Lady Conchs played their district game at St. Brendan in Miami. The Conchs took the win 2-0. Key West’s bats struggled as they only scraped six hits. Marina Goins took credit for two of the hits with Madison Gonzales, Miesha Hernandez, Caroline Smith and Chloe Knowles each smacking one. The Conchs scored both their runs in the third inning. Yaharia Williams led off the inning with a walk, then scored from first base on a line drive to right field by Gonzalez to put the Conchs on the board. Goins singled and was followed by a single by Hernandez. Knowles came to bat with the bases loaded. She singled on a ground ball to right field, scoring Goins to put the Conchs up by two. Chloe Gilday pitched a shutout for Key West, giving up only one hit with eight strikeouts to help the Conchs to victory. On May 6, the Key West Conchs baseball team faced St. Brendan, also in Miami. The game got out of hand early for the Conchs after they allowed four runs and had three errors in the first inning, all of which would be costly. St. Brendan scored yet another run in the third inning, making the game 5-0. The Conchs responded with one run in the bottom of the third on a single from Trevor Zuelch, which scored Anthony Lariz. Key West was down by 4 runs and needed to get something going. It wasn’t until the fifth inning, after they allowed one run to score for St. Brendan, that their bats came alive. The Conchs compiled a series of singles, walks and errors to score three runs. Lariz was on first base after a walk; Noah Burnham singled, followed by a single from Preston Herce, loading the bases. Lariz scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Jack Haggard reached base on an error by the Sabres, scoring Burnham and Herce.

Key West’s defense buckled down after the fifth inning, allowing no more runs. The Conchs tied the game in the sixth inning by scoring an additional two runs. Jose Pedigon led off the inning with a single followed by two walks, then a single to center field from Haggard, scoring Pedigon and Herce. Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. The Sabres did not score in the top of the eighth, leaving it up to the Conchs to walk it off. Herce walked to start the inning. Zuelch singled, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Haggard to put runners on second and third. The game ended after Herce raced home on a passed ball to cap off a wild comeback victory. Andris Borroso started on the mound for the Conchs. He allowed six runs, but only one was earned. He gave up four hits and had one strikeout. Jacob Burnham came to the mound in the top of the sixth inning and would finish the game for the Conchs, taking the win. He gave up two hits and no runs while striking out three. The Lady Conchs took on the LaBelle Cowboys at 7 p.m. May 11, after presstime, in the regional quarterfinals at the KWHS Backyard. At 7:30 p.m., Conch baseball faces the Mariner Tritons in their regional quarterfinals game at Rex Weech Field. As No. 1 seeds in the region, both teams continue to play at home if they win. If successful Wednesday night, baseball will be at home on Saturday, May 14 and softball would take the diamond on Tuesday, May 17.

COUNTY FARM SUPERVISOR TALKS MO & MORE Hi friends! Reef the fox here with “Reef’s Report.” Boy oh boy, do I have a treat this week. I sat down with one of our favorite REEF humans to THE FOX ask her some questions about Reef is a red fox life, work and that was saved the animals from a fur farm. she cares for. He now lives in Key Largo with The one, the his human, Nicole only, Jeanne Navarro. Selander. The supervisor of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm down in Key West, Selander and my mom met in 2017 after Hurricane Irma. My mom volunteered to help clean up the farm and get the animals settled back in after the storm. Did you know that they moved all of the animals up into the jail on the service elevator to ride out Irma? Pretty wild, huh? Anywho, my mom and Jeanne became good friends, and then in 2018 two foxes were surrendered to the farm, my mom fell in love, and long story short, Pawsitive Beginnings was born. Reef: Have you always worked around animals? Jeanne: I’ve always had animals in my life, but not all of my jobs have involved animals. I have worked at several aquariums, trained horses, aquaculture, florist and been an environmental consultant. Reef: Where did you grow up and when did you start working at the farm? Jeanne: I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina on James

Island, and started working at the farm in September 2006. Reef: What animal at the farm has had the most impact on your life? Jeanne: That would’ve been Mo the sloth. Reef: Mo was undoubtedly one of the most loved creatures and had an impact on so many people who got to meet him. Even those who never had the opportunity to meet him fell in love with him. So do you believe that the inmates change after having the opportunity to care for the animals? Jeanne: They absolutely do. Many of them gain a greater appreciation of animals and learn compassion and responsibility. Reef: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met as a result of supervising the farm? Jeanne: Well Reef, that would have to be you, of course. Reef: Yes! I love the appreciation for me. I have waited for an interviewee to answer that question with the obvious answer that I am, in fact, the most interesting fox in the world. On that same note, what is your favorite thing about me? Jeanne: Your sassy attitude! Reef: You are right about that, my friend. Lastly, what is your opinion on fur being used in fashion? Jeanne: It’s cruel and outdated. Fur coats are for animals, not people. That’s all for this week my friends. Head on over to pawsitivebeginnings.org to see what’s new. We have an online fundraising event coming up on June 4, and it is a good one. You can get your tickets online by heading to our website. Until next time, Reef, over and out!

A

GREATEST MOB (OR MAFIA, OR GANGSTER) MOVIES EVER MADE 10. “Once Upon a Time in America” (1984): You’ll recognize most of the films on this list, but for younger readers, this one might not ring a bell. Do yourself a favor, either watch it for the first time or revisit this classic. 9. “Casino” (1995): You’ll see De Niro’s name all over this list, along with Pesci and others, but Sharon Stone should have won every award possible for her performance in this film. It’s another Scorsese classic and can be debated for a much higher position on this list. 8. “The Untouchables” (1987): The ’80s were dominated by Cold War-fueled action movies, but “The Untouchables” has withstood the test of time. With a cast that includes Connery, Costner, De Niro and Garcia, it’s one of the best Al Capone and Eliot Ness stories ever created. 7. “Donnie Brasco” (1997): The mid to late ’90s witnessed a revival for gangster movies, but the chemistry between Pacino and Depp gave movie fans a refreshing twist of empathy for the bad guys. 6. “Scarface” (1983): You can’t talk about gangster movies without mentioning “Scarface.” Perhaps one of the most quoted movies of all time, it could only be Al Pacino in the role of Tony Montana, “a political refugee.”

5. “The Departed” (2006): “Get him a cranberry juice.” From Damon, DiCaprio, Wahlberg and Nicholson, this film has it all. Not only is it one of the best mob movies ever made, it’s one of the best movies ever made. 4. “Heat” (1995): Michael Mann created a cool, existential feel for this film, basing De Niro and Pacino’s cat-and-mouse chase around L.A. Not to mention, this was vintage Val Kilmer during the Val Kilmer era. 3. “Goodfellas” (1990): Although Scorsese is considered a cinematic deity, this film is arguably his masterpiece. If you don’t know Joe Pesci’s lines from this movie, you simply don’t know gangster movies. 2. “The Godfather II” (1974): It was an origin story before origin movies were cool and it is arguably just as flawless as part one. The film also gave us a young Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the same 202 minutes of perfection. 1. “The Godfather” (1972): It was the first installment of Coppola’s epic trilogy and it not only defined any gangster movie after, it changed the scope of movies altogether. Other arguments were made for: “A Bronx Tale,” “American Gangster,” “Road to Perdition,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “Public Enemy,” “Little Caesar” and “Eastern Promises.”

EVERYONE WHO PICKED RICH STRIKE IN THE DERBY, PLEASE STAND UP

N

o, I didn’t pick the winner of last Saturday’s Kentucky ... a veteran sports Derby. While I have columnist, says chosen some previous winthe only sport ners, there wasn’t a chance I he doesn’t follow could have picked Rich Strike, is cricket. That leaves plenty and I’ll tell you why. of others to fill As of Friday morning, the his time. 20-horse field included Etheralphmoro1936 real Road in the 20th post @gmail.com position. Then, 30 seconds before the deadline, Ethereal Road’s trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, pulled him from the race. The next eligible 3-year-old (based on earnings) was Rich Strike. His owner, Rich Dawson, said let’s go for it. He also said, several times late Saturday, that he wouldn’t enter a horse in any race, even the Derby, unless he thought he had a winner. This is the same owner who lost 23 of 36 horses in a barn fire six years ago, which gave Dawson pause about continuing that line of work. He obviously continued, though. And now, Dawson has a winner all right. The son of Keen Ice, Rich Strike had one victory and three thirds in seven career starts. His jockey, Sonny Leon, had not previously ridden in the Derby. Leon, the leading Venezualan rider in this country (by number of races won) before Saturday, did most of his riding at Mahoning Valley Race Course, near Youngstown, Ohio. He’s the leading jockey there. Now, I’ve been to several tracks in Ohio. Mainly River Downs near Cincinnati, Beulah Park near Columbus and Thistledown near Cleveland. Not for several years, though. I’d never heard of Mahoning Valley. The sheet showing the Derby field from which I was working still had Ethereal Road listed. But there was no way I would have picked that colt – or Rich Strike, had he been listed. As I read up on the race pre-Derby, I was looking for good horses who could come steaming out of the gate and be close to the early lead. That was not an 80-1 choice, starting from the now 21st position. The 20th post was gone with Ethereal Road. No. My choices were Epicenter (the betting favorite), Taiba (ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith) and Simplification. Later, I added a fourth horse, Florida Derby winner White Abarrio. When I pick my Derby horses from afar, that’s the usual way I do it. Pick three or so and send my money with a friend who is headed for Louisville and Churchill Downs to place my bets. There was a time when I had the winner on my Derby list a dozen or so times in a row. Remarkable? Yes, but two things: I didn’t always bet and I didn’t bet much. And I didn’t bet this time. Saturday’s race was exciting in my book. With a quarter-mile to go, I was rooting for Epicenter, who was among the leaders. Soon, it was Epicenter and Zandon, pounding toward

the finish. And then, from way back, in 17th place, came a third colt. It was none other than Rich Strike, the nobody. At 80-1, it would be the longest winning odds since 1913 when Donerail won at 91-1. As Rich Strike made his way to the front from just inside the rail, it was almost as if the rest of the field moved away from the post to give Rich Strike room. He won by three-quarters of a length in 2:02.61. He paid his betting followers $163.60 for $2. He earned his owners $1.86 million. Dawson bought him last fall when Calumet Farms offered him for $30,000 in a claiming Race. Happy? Of course. I’m always happy to see a good story. And Rich Strike is certainly that. TWO OTHER WEEKEND STORIES got me very excited: The District 4A championships won by the Key West baseball and softball teams, both against St. Brendan. Both began state championship play earlier this week at Rex Weech and the Key West Backyard, respectively. After opening District play with a 17-0 victory in four innings over Sunset, the Conchs’ baseball team had to rally in an extra inning to beat the Sabres, 7-6, after falling behind 5-0 following St. Brendan’s four runs in the first and a single run in the top of third. Key West got its first run in the bottom of the third on a walk to Anthony Lariz, a balk, a sacrifice bunt and a single by Trevor Zuelch. After the Sabres got one run back, in the fifth, Key West scored three in the bottom of that inning on walks and hits by Joel Perdigon and Jack Haggard and two the following inning on walks and two hits by Zuelch and Haggard. In the eighth, the Conchs scored the winning run when Preston Herce scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch. With sophomore standout pitcher Chloe Gilday allowing but two hits, the Lady Conchs defeated St. Brendan, 2-0, to take care of the girls’ 16-4A title. Key West improved its overall record to 17 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie. The Lady Conchs were ranked fourth in 4A as they headed to Regional play.

large section of beach, as well as the tent camping sites, at the popular Bahia Honda State Park near Big Pine Key have been closed since Hurricane Irma in September 2017. But Park Manager Mark Duncan called the Keys Weekly last week to let us know the Sandspur Beach area has officially reopened for daytime use. “The tent camping area will be next to reopen and we’ll start taking reservations for those spots in the coming weeks,” Duncan said, adding that the park’s cabins on the bayside have been open, but the tent camping sites, which typically have a waitlist several months long, will be a welcome return. Restoration of the state park still continues, but the reopening of Sandspur Beach is a huge postIrma milestone, Duncan said.

The other popular stretch of beach, Loggerhead Beach, reopened in 2018, a year after the storm, park officials said. “After the storm passed, volunteers and staff came together to remove debris, clear paths and begin the long road to recovery. Restoration efforts are still taking place to restore the beloved park,” states the Florida State Parks website. “After the storm passed, biologists determined which park ecosystems had suffered significant damage and how that would affect native plant species. Biologists then created a plan to restore these hurricane-damaged habitats. Hurricane Irma was not the first storm to hit Bahia Honda, nor will it be the last. But what is notable is that each time, people from all over the state come together to rebuild and renew the park which they hold so dear. The projects that have taken place here are a true testament to the spirit of resilience and perseverance that shines brightly at Bahia Honda State Park.”

ENGAGING TRUE TALE COMES TO LIFE ‘THE PICKPOCKET’S DAUGHTER’ OPENS AT THE STUDIOS MAY 18

Cassidy Timms, Jessica Miano Kruel and Jeremy Zoma star in ‘The Pickpocket’s Daughter’ written by Key West playwright Neil Ruchman MARK HEDDEN/The Studios of Key West

“T

he Pickpocket’s Daughter.” The title alone draws us in, introducing two people we simply must meet. The Studios of Key West’s cultural season continues in May with the debut of one of the most anticipated theatrical productions of the year. “The Pickpocket’s Daughter,” written by Key West resident Neal Ruchman, is staged in the Helmerich Theater for a limited run of eight nights from May 18-28. Tickets are available at tskw.org or by calling 305-296-0458. Based on real-life events, the play tells the story of Ruchman’s mother, Harriett “Matzy” Moses (nicknamed for her love of matzo), who came of age in New York in the late 1930s at a time when Jewish and Irish gangs fought for control of the city. When 17-year-old Matzy gets caught up in a battle between rival factions, she has to rely on all the chutzpah and smarts she has to get out of the situation alive. The play’s first reading at The Studios in 2018 left audiences raving. “‘The Pickpocket’s Daughter’ is nothing short of wonderful,” said one audience member. “The storyline is tight and seamless. The characters are beautifully drawn. I loved every second of it.” With rehearsals well underway, the play comes to life under the

hand of veteran director Murphy Davis, starring a cast of some of Key West’s most accomplished actors, including Don Bearden, David Black, Mary Falconer, Joy Hawkins and Jessica Miano Kruel. Rounding out the cast are experienced actors from all over the country, including Cody Borah, Mark Liebert, Cassidy Timms, Sean Armstrong Verre, Phillip Cole White and Jeremy Zoma. “It’s been a dream of mine to see this play come to fruition ever since I first heard my mother’s incredible story,” said playwright Ruchman. “The play is testament to the obstacles she overcame, and I hope she’d be proud to see the way her indomitable spirit is woven through every line.” The play has as many twists and turns as any crime drama, but it’s the deeply human characters and thought-provoking themes that will leave audiences thinking for days after the show. — Contributed “THE PICKPOCKET’S DAUGHTER” Wednesday through Saturday, May 18-21 and 25-28, 8 p.m. Helmerich Theater 533 Eaton St. For tickets visit tskw.org or call 305-296-0458 for more information.

The Key West Weekly’s own Britt Myers emceed the inaugural Island Queen amateur drag pageant, which was organized and produced by his wife, Kirby Myers, owner of Kirby’s Closet and a dedicated board member of Samuel’s House, which supports women and families who have struggled with abuse and/or addiction. Key West Theater hosted the event, which raised an estimated $30,000 in one night for Samuel’s House. The show included “drag tutoring” to help amateurs look and

perform their best. Talent acts included comedy routines, song and dance. The audience voted with their donations for the evening’s winner, which was Erin McKenna, aka “Hugh Janus,” who bested Bill Lay, owner of La Trattoria, La Trattoria Oceanside, Benihana and Virgilio’s, by about $24. The show also included Britt Myers’ trademark wit and welltimed “zingers” that kept the audience on its toes all night. The Keys Weekly’s own resident astrologist and horoscope writer Chris McNulty also participated in the hijinks. — Mandy Miles

ATTRACTING & RETAINING TEACHERS SCHOOL’S NEW RESOURCE GUIDE TO ASSIST THE HOME SEARCH

A

strategic plan is in the works for the Monroe County School District. Recruiting and retaining a workforce, as well as maintaining a safe environment on school grounds, were among the items discussed during a May 10 school board gathering at Coral Shores High School. Elisa Levy, strategic planning consultant, said focus group meetings show many teachers relaying a need to live in the Keys. Financially, that’s becoming a challenge due to a hot housing market and a lack of workforce housing. “We understand what the need is here and the gravity of the situation,” Levy said as she unveiled a list of goals and strategies, which included developing workforce housing. “You’re already working on Trumbo, which would be useful probably all the way up to Marathon.” The school district is seeking to develop its administrative headquarters property on Trumbo Road in Key West. The 5.9-acre property is adjacent to the Lang Milian public housing complex that is also ripe for renewal. Included in one company’s proposal for Trumbo Road are 76 rental apartments, a new two-story, 20,000-square-foot administrative building, and 1.27 acres of green space. Levy said focus groups also discussed the fact that many new teachers are overwhelmed when it comes to finding a place to live. A housing resource guide and a point person teachers could call for assistance were among the possible activities the district could do. Later in the meeting, Henry Russell, executive director of personnel and instructional leadership, told school board members that a new employee resource guide is out to assist school employees with housing options. Russell said Axford told him the district needed to come up with a resource tool for new and current employees with information on the local housing market. Russell said the district felt it could create a tool to give employees that could identify and locate potential places to live. The guide starts with a welcome message from the superintendent and fun facts about the Keys before going into a list of housing options from the Lower Keys and Upper Keys, as well as Florida City and Homestead, since a number of teachers and

employees live on the mainland. Russell said they’ve captured the current housing availability in the Keys. “This is a tool that’s being developed, so as we are made aware of more and more opportunities in our communities, we will continue to add and update this document,” he said. Russell added that he sent letters to real estate agents throughout the Keys and local chambers of commerce to let them know they were creating a housing guide. In addition, the resource guide includes a variety of child care services from the Lower Keys to Upper Keys, as well as information about hospitals, DMVs, internet services and local utilities. The resource guide is on the district’s website under the employment and human resources tabs. Among the other strategies Levy unveiled that the district could employ to attract and retain teachers and staff are expanding an employee recognition program and identifying exit trends beyond income and housing. Increasing staff compensation and financial support, such as free after school care and increased longevity bonuses were also listed as possible things the district could look into. As for safety, Levy said the goal is creating and maintaining safe, healthy and inclusive environments that foster students’ mental and physical health. Strategies within a list unveiled by Levy included increasing security in school hallways and bathrooms to prevent vaping and vandalism. “Two years ago we weren’t talking about vaping. This year it has exploded according to (school resource officers),” Levy said. Preventing bullying on and off campus and ensuring consistent implementation of student attendance were other strategies outlined in Levy’s presentation. A workshop with principals on the strategic plan is set for Thursday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 24. Principals will take the plan to teachers by the end of the school year. Levy said a final strategic plan draft will be presented to school board members during a retreat on June 14. The plan could be finalized by August.

In other news, the school board heard a report on the legislative session in Tallahassee from state Rep. Jim Mooney. A number of K-12 education bills passed through the legislature, including one that requires high school students to take a financial literacy course before graduating. “I’ve said this since 1973 when I started teaching: we’re not teaching kids how to balance a checkbook. We teach them a lot of great stuff, but we don’t teach them a lot of stuff that really matters to their lives at the end of the day,” Mooney said. He also highlighted House Bill 1421 that improves school safety, security and transparency and refines plans for drills and reuniting families. House Bill 1467 improves the transparency around selecting library materials and establishes 12-year term limits for school boards. “They tried to get eight (years) passed,” Mooney said. He also delved into House Bill 1557, the parental rights bill. He said he voted against the bill after a tremendous amount of soul searching, reading and figuring out why the bill was as “vague as it was written.” In his statements to the board, Mooney said he takes pride in reading bills from beginning to end multiple times and discussing it with leadership and the bill sponsor. He said the vagueness in the bill “was too much for me.” “I looked and thought to myself, we don’t teach sex ed to K-3 anyway in Florda. It’s not in our curriculum, period,” he said. “Terms like inappropriate, those are very vague terms. I can tell you coming out of local government, ordinances I’ve been involved with that were vague ultimately allowed attorneys to feast. “Putting the school board and teachers in peril of lawsuits, and they don’t have to be definite, that’s the hard part of understanding why things can go sideways,” he continued. “It takes someone who thinks something is inappropriate. Therefore, the school board becomes the punching bag.” The next school board meeting is set for Tuesday, June 14 at 5 p.m. at Key West City Hall.

PART 2

ATTACK AT INDIAN KEY: THE INDIANS

The story of Chekaika and Lieutenant Colonel Harney This is the second part in a four-part series on the attack at Indian Key.

T

he University of West Florida’s John Worth has researched the Calusa people in both Spanish and Cuban archives. One of the people he identified was the celebrated Indian chief Antonio. Physically, he is remembered as a strong, well-developed man who stood, at the very least, six feet tall. Antonio, an established captain with a ship, was a leader of the Spanish Indians who sailed for Florida with his crew during the second escalation of the Seminole War. In stories about the Seminole War, Antonio is known by a different name. He is called Chekaika. The first time Chekaika’s name enters the lexicon is the summer of 1839. Lt. Col. William S. Harney led a mission to establish a trading post along the banks of the Caloosahatchee River. The Caloosahatchee empties into Pine Island Sound at Cape Coral, Florida, on the west coast. Harney Point can be found in Cape Coral, at the end of Edith Esplanade. Harney led 25 soldiers, two interpreters, one civilian trader and his four employees down the Caloosahatchee River. Somewhere near the mouth of the river, perhaps at Harney Point, the troop stopped along the shore, set up camp, and established an area for the trading post. A distance of about 300 yards separated the camp and the trading post. In the day or two immediately following their arrival, a group of Indians created a campsite on the other side of the river. Three days after the trading post was established, the Indians lit bonfires and began to dance into the night. In the early morning hours of July 23, 1839, under cover of night, they crossed the river. As many as 160 Indians attacked. The coordinated assault against both sites was launched simultaneously, with Chekaika leading his men to attack the military camp and the

Seminole leader Hospetarke and his people attacking the store. Thirteen people were killed between the two sites, six taken captive and 14 escaped. In addition BRAD to the six prisoners, BERTELLI the Indians recovered a keg of gunis an author, speaker, and Flor- powder, percussion ida Keys historian. caps, six carbines, 14 Colt rifles and a His latest book, “The Florida Keys large boat. Chekaika was subjects — Florida last seen leading Keys history and the Skunk Ape. his men up Henderson Creek and into what is today known as Rookery Bay en route to his hidden camp in the Big Cypress Swamp. Chekaika’s hideaway was a tree island rising out of the Everglades. The isolated hardwood hammock, accessible by shallow draft boats like canoes, was surrounded by the Everglades’ “River of Grass.” Harney was one of the lucky ones who escaped, barely, with nothing but his nightclothes. Several days later, he arrived at Indian Key aboard a small schooner. The Caloosahatchee River attack would prove to be one of the most successful Indian attacks of the Seminole War. One of the things that made Chekaika a standout was his preference for attacking in the early morning hours when darkness still covered his approach. The tactic would be repeated just over one year later. Sometime in the last days of July 1840, Chekaika led a war party away from his tree island hideaway. How many people were among the group of warriors has never been verified, and the numbers given range from 50 to 136. However many there were, they traveled in 17 canoes, paddled south through the slough, and followed a

course that might have led them to Whitewater Bay. From there, they traveled down the Halbatahatchee River and into Florida Bay. The trip would have taken about six days. It is generally thought that the Indians stopped and waited at Lower Matecumbe Key before advancing to Indian Key. From his ship at Key Biscayne, Lt. McLaughlin penned a letter to Secretary of the Navy Paulding dated Aug. 4, 1840: “Lt. Rogers in the Wave, sailed today with 18 canoes for Cape Romano, on the western coast, touching on his passage at Tea Table Key for provisions and to take off all the people capable of quitting the hospital, for another attempt to cross the Everglades from the vicinity…” Rogers sailed away from Tea Table Key and Fort Paulding on August 6 with all but a handful of able-bodied men left behind. Midshipman Murray and five sailors were left behind to administer aid to the hospital’s sick and wounded. Night came, midnight passed, and Aug. 6 became Aug. 7. Chekaika led the 17 canoes away from Lower Matecumbe Key, across the Atlantic shallows in those early morning hours, and out to Indian Key. They quietly pulled their canoes up onto the western side of the island and crept ashore where they waited to attack before being discovered by Mr. Beiglett and Mr. Glass.

SINKING THE SPIEGEL

DIVE ENTHUSIASTS CELEBRATE SHIP TURNED ARTIFICIAL REEF IN KEY LARGO

The USS Spiegel Grove, a dock landing ship of the U.S. Navy, arrives for a sinking underneath the Florida Keys waters. FLORIDA KEYS NEWS BUREAU/Contributed

he 20th anniversary of the storied intentional sinking of a retired 510-foot Navy landing ship dock to create an artificial reef 6 miles off Key Largo will be marked Sunday-Tuesday, May 15-17 in the Florida Keys. Highlights include a planned morning dive on Spiegel Grove on Sunday, May 15, to place a commemorative plaque on the ship’s hull to honor the men who served on the vessel. Qualified divers can make a reservation by contacting Lisa Mongelia, director of Islamorada’s History of Diving Museum, at 305-664-9737 or director@divingmuseum.org. The museum is also debuting a month-long pop-up exhibit about the ship in its research library. Visitors to the facility, located at MM 82.9 bayside in Islamorada, can learn about the wreck and its fascinating heritage through May 31. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. On Tuesday, May 17 — the 20th anniversary of the ship’s sinking — the public can enjoy “Celebrating the Spiegel Grove at 20: A Saga Too Strange Even for Hollywood,” a multimedia presentation and panel discussion with members of the initial “sink team,” chronicling the intriguing history of Spiegel Grove. The story of the ship’s journey from the ocean’s surface to the sandy bottom 130 feet below is as compelling as its size.

Featured panelists include Lad Akins, curator of marine conservation at Frost Museum of Science; Rob Bleser and Spencer Slate, Key Largo dive operators; Stephen Frink, renowned underwater photographer and Alert Diver Magazine publisher; Joy Martin, former Key Largo Chamber of Commerce president; retired NOAA Rear Adm. Dave Score, a former Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary superintendent; and Andy Newman, media relations director for the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. The free event is from 7 to 9 p.m. in the auditorium of Key Largo’s Murray Nelson Governmental and Cultural Center, MM 102. Refreshments and beverages will be served. Interested participants are asked to register with the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce at keylargochamber.org. The panel will review the saga of the Spiegel Grove. During the morning of May 17, 2002, the ship prematurely sank and rolled over, leaving its upside-down bow protruding above the ocean’s surface, which was deemed a navigational hazard by the U.S. Coast Guard. The team of workers on the ship had scampered to safety and escaped injury, but the story captured worldwide media attention and the Spiegel Grove quickly became the best-known artificial reef even before the first recreational diver descended on it.

In early July 2005 the vessel was discovered in an upright position — the position that the dive community had originally hoped for — after Hurricane Dennis brushed the Florida Keys with tropical storm-force winds.

A massive effort resulted in the ship being fully sunk on its starboard side June 10, 2002, and after a salvage operation to recover lost equipment, the ship opened to divers June 26, 2002. But the saga of the Spiegel Grove wasn’t finished. In early July 2005, the vessel was discovered in an upright position — the position that the dive community had originally hoped for — after Hurricane Dennis brushed the Florida Keys with tropical storm-force winds. The commemorative celebration also includes the May 17 kickoff of the “Spiegel Grove 20th Anniversary Dive Trip Giveaway.” The prize includes a three-night Key Largo accommodations-and-dive trip, valued at over $2,500, to dive the famous wreck — still the world’s third-largest ship ever intentionally sunk to become an artificial reef and one of nine iconic wreck diving sites along the Florida Keys Wreck Trek. The contest entry page link will be published in posts on the Florida Keys’ Facebook page and as a link below the bio (@thefloridakeys) on Instagram and Twitter. The trip giveaway entry period begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, and continues through 11:59 p.m.,Tuesday, May 31. Rules and terms will be available on the contest page. — Contributed

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

IMMIGRATION DOUBLE STANDARD IS ‘CRAZY’ Dear Editor,

MILLIE MOO IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Millie has been looking for her furever home for almost a year now and we just know there is an amazing family out there for her. Millie is a 5-½-year-old, medium mixed breed who is smart, affectionate, playful and likes to learn new things. However, she’s not a fan of other animals in the home. So, she would need to be the sole Queen Bee with her new family. Millie loves to play with her toys, go for walks and get lots of human snuggles. She is incredibly strong, so she would need an owner who can match her strength when out and about. If you think this sweet girl could be the right pup for you, stop by the Key West campus and meet Millie today.

I realize I must be missing something; however, I just don’t understand why the Cuban families who continually risk their lives to cross the Florida Straits are intercepted and returned to Cuba, where they face incarceration in communist jails or worse. At the same time our open border with Mexico provides millions of illegal immigrants from everywhere in South America, including Cuban citizens who enter, mostly without screening. From personal experience I know for a fact the Cuban citizens can fly to Nicaragua, walk or be taken to Mexico and then cross our virtually open Texas border. This double standard is crazy. At least our previous “wet foot/ dry foot” policy gave many Cubans a shot at freedom and a new life. And these folks all went through Customs when they landed in America. Sincerely, Edwin O. Swift III Key West
