stretch of road on Lower Matecumbe will be raised to mitigate flooding from storms and address rising waters that have eroded a nearby beach. Heavy equipment began arriving in Islamorada on April 25. An $18.1-million project by the Florida Department of Transportation will elevate and strengthen the road and shoulders from MM 73.8 to MM 76. With construction beginning this month, FDOT says the project will take roughly 18 months. “The Department has a duty to prolong the lifespan of the existing road and keep it safe for the public. For this reason, the Department is performing a resurfacing, restoration and rehabilitation (RRR) project along the corridor,” FDOT said. The road and shoulders south of Tollgate Boulevard and near Palm Drive will be elevated some 14 inches. Adjacent to Sea Oats Beach, FDOT said, the road and shoulder will be raised 12 to 24 inches. For the 1.9 miles north of Sea Oats Beach, the highway and shoulders will be raised about 9 inches. The halfmile south of Lignumvitae Bridge will remain the same, FDOT says. In addition to raising the road and shoulders, the project will improve drainage, tie into a shoreline protection system along Sea Oats Beach and a guardrail. Last year, crews conducted a project to harden the shoreline

at the beach that’s seen waters creeping near shore over the years. In January 2021, crews began repairing the embankment and shoulder near the beach on Lower Matecumbe Key — an area that was washed out by Hurricane Irma. Work was part of a larger Hurricane Irma repair project by FDOT, estimated at $6 million, to repair embankments from MM 33 to MM 79 in Monroe County. Crews will upgrade road signs and pavement markings from MM 70 to MM 80, enhance bicycle features at the shared-use path crossing locations and evaluate existing landscape. Temporary lane closures will be limited to Sunday through Thursday between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. FDOT said construction activities will be permitted during the nighttime except for milling, resurfacing and striping. All milled surfaces will be paved prior to opening to traffic. FDOT’s project coincides with Florida Keys Electric Cooperative’s installation of new poles on the opposite side of U.S. 1 between the Overseas Highway and a small side road on the bayside. The utility company said the project is necessary with severe beach erosion threatening the stability of the transmission system, which could affect power delivery from the mainland to the 80,000-plus accounts south of MM 80.

ANCHORING, LAND AUTHORITY BILLS SIGNED

Governor pens signature to improve water quality and enhance resiliency

ov. Ron DeSantis recently signed two Monroe County-related bills into law, a vessel anchoring bill and a land authority bill. Monroe County worked with state Rep. Jim Mooney and state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez to tackle derelict vessels in Florida Keys waters. Last session, the legislature passed a bill enacting new 90-day anchoring limits in the waters of the Florida Keys, including implementing 300 new moorings. The county worked this session to modify that requirement. This year’s Senate Bill 1432 lowers the required new moorings to 100 and applies the new anchoring limits only to stored vessels, and will not apply to liveaboard vessels until the new required moorings are placed. “We are pleased the governor signed this bill and are proud the county led this effort thanks to the help of Rep. Mooney and Sen. Rodriguez,” said Monroe County Mayor Pro Tem Craig Cates, who helped lead the local efforts. “This bill will lead to safer and cleaner waters around the Florida Keys, which is the core of our community in so many ways.” Monroe County also led the successful passage of

Senate Bill 442, allowing the Monroe County Land Authority to assist the board of county commissioners in enhancing the resilience and mitigation of residential properties. The bill enables the land authority to assist private property owners in grant applications to mitigate flood impacts, such as elevating homes, demolishing older homes below minimum flood elevation and rebuilding the home, or buying out properties in low-lying areas from willing sellers. This is in addition to the public lands the Land Authority purchases and manages. The bill adds to Monroe County’s comprehensive efforts to increase overall resilience in the Florida Keys by complimenting the County’s efforts to rebuild infrastructure like roads, drainage, and other vital public facilities. “We are excited to see the governor’s signature on this bill. The passing of this bill adds another tool to our toolbox to make the Florida Keys more resilient to climate change,” said Monroe County Mayor David Rice, who is also the chairman of the land authority board. More information about land authority programs is at www.monroecounty-fl.gov/landauthority. — Contributed

t a special meeting on April 28, with a 3-1 vote, the Key Colony Beach City Commission appointed and swore in Beth Ramsay Vickrey as its newest commissioner. Born and raised in Marathon, Vickrey brings more than 16 years of experience in Monroe County government and politics, beginning when she formed the No Name Key property owners’ association in 2006. She became an active citizen advocate when the county began its comprehensive plan update in 2010 and served six years on the Keys Energy Advisory Board before her appointment to the Monroe County Planning Commission for four years. She also sits on the county’s library advisory board. “I’ve always felt that good government requires involvement,” said Vickrey. “I’ve always thrown myself into my community. … I’m hoping that my 16-plus years of practical handson experience throughout the county crafting governmental legislation and setting policies, along with my personal working relationships throughout the county, will be an asset to Key Colony Beach in broadening intergovernmental communications and reach.”

Beth Ramsay Vickrey is dedicated to protecting the ‘wonderful gem’ of Key Colony Beach. CONTRIBUTED.

Kathryn McCullough resigned from the commission when she moved from KCB. After spending 16 years in the Lower Keys, Vickrey calls Key Colony Beach her “forever place” and says she intends to remain a mainstay in the community for as long as possible. She has already filed to retain her current seat via the general election this November. “(KCB) is truly such a special place, it’s hard to describe it to people,” she said. “You have this relationship with your friends and your neighbors that you just don’t get anywhere else. It’s so clean, it’s pristine, and the beaches are phenomenal. I’ve just truly found where my soul was at peace.” Vickrey ’s priority is ensuring the successful completion of Key Colony’s city hall, as well as protecting its unique sense of community and ensuring that Key Colony stays the “wonderful gem it is.” Outside of the government arena, Vickrey is a passionate advocate for animals, serving as a past liaison to the American Kennel Club and becoming a regular volunteer and supporter at the Marathon SPCA for more than 10 years.

GOVERNOR APPOINTS JIM SCHOLL TO COUNTY COMMISSION MANDY MILES

COVID CASES RISE COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Monroe County. A little more than 90 cases were reported between April 15 and April 21.

Latest infections aren’t leading to hospitalizations JIM McCARTHY

jim@keysweekly.com

C

OVID-19 cases are ticking upward in Monroe County, but they aren’t leading to serious illness and the need for hospitalization among the infected. The Florida Health Department report that’s now released every two weeks reported 91 COVID-19 cases in Monroe County between April 15 and April 21. In that span, Florida reported 20,860 COVID cases. A new case positivity rate of 8.1% in the Keys is above the state’s 6.1% average. But hospitals aren’t reporting seeing increased patients who are in need of inpatient care. Lower Keys Medical Center reported one COVID positive patient receiving treatment as of May 2. LKMC spokeswoman Lynn Corbett-Winn said the facility hasn’t seen a significant rise in COVID hospitalizations in the past month. Baptist Health South Florida’s hospitals in the Keys reported no patients receiving treatment at Mariners or Fishermen’s hospitals as of May 2. While the health department in Monroe County is watching the situation closely, Bob Eadie, health officer for Monroe County, said the recent COVID-19 wave isn’t causing any major concerns. Those who are vaccinated and come down with COVID are experiencing cold symptoms for a brief period before they begin to recover. “It’s not unexpected or unusual to see the epidemic evolve and the virus evolve. But it doesn’t seem to cause serious illness, and that’s a relief as far as that goes,” he said.

Sore throat, cough, congestion and fever are among the symptoms appearing upon exposure to the virus. Symptoms may appear two to 14 days after the exposure. Like influenza and the cold, Eadie said, experts are now saying that people will live in a world with COVID. In the northern states, waves will likely be seen during the colder months. In states like Florida, waves could be seen during the warmer months.

“We’ve learned to live with the cold and influenza. There’s no reason we can’t figure out how to live with this.”

“During colder months, you have people inside and closer together as opposed to warmer months. That would drive spikes,” he said. “With the presumption of travel, you have people coming from so many different areas of the country to the Keys. You have a constant change of people and that increases exposure to the virus. “We’ve learned to live with the cold and influenza. There’s no reason we can’t figure out how to live with this,” he continued. Eadie added that vaccines remain effective against the virus and the various strains. Those who are inoculated and still come down with COVID only see mild symptoms. He also urges using common sense, like staying home if sick and staying away from big crowds. A total of 61,386, or 84% of the population, in Monroe County have received a vaccine. That’s tied for second best in Florida with Broward County.

’ve always said I don’t run for office; I run from office,” the Florida Keys’ newest county commissioner told the Keys Weekly on May 2. Jim Scholl, former Key West city manager and naval aviator who commanded Naval Air Station Key West in the early 2000s, didn’t run for the office of county commissioner, but rather was appointed last week by Gov. Ron DeSantis to fulfill the term of Eddie Martinez, who resigned in December 2021 following his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence. “I certainly understand the issues, I’ve been paying attention and I know everyone involved,” Scholl said, adding that he has maintained close ties and good relationships with the military leaders at NAS Key West as well as city of Key West and county officials. Scholl lists workforce housing, sea level rise and resiliency and quality of life for residents among his top issues and priorities for the county. “We have some serious things to figure out when it comes to sea level rise and adaptability and which projects make sense to do,” he said. “When it comes to quality of life, investors buying up all property in the Keys obviously has a huge impact on quality of life, but of course, property owners have property rights. And our workforce housing situation is devastating to everyone,” he said. When asked whether he thinks Key West’s and/or the Florida Keys’ relationship with the state legislature needs to be repaired, Scholl said he doesn’t believe so and added that he works well with our state representatives. “Of course, some rhetoric gets stirred up in social media. People exacerbate a problem that may not even exist. It’s embarrassing and disappointing that we’ve lost our sense of knowledge from history lessons. The easiest way to cause big problems is to demonize something, and social media makes that easier than ever before.” Scholl added that he recently spoke with Jonathan Gueverra, president of the College of the Florida Keys, about the demise of

Former Key West city manager and Naval Air Station Key West commander Jim Scholl will fulfill the Monroe County commission term of Eddie Martinez, who resigned in December 2021 following his arrest. Keys Weekly file photo

critical-thinking skills and Americans’ inability to be discerning in the information they absorb and believe. “There’s so much information now in the public domain, but no one wants to go to the actual source or use critical thinking to evaluate those sources,” Scholl said. “We all need to work together for the greater good, not personal gain. It’s embarrassing when the Oval Office becomes, or did become, vitriolic and utterly forgoes diplomacy.” Martinez’s — now Scholl’s — four-year term representing District 3 ends in 2024, and Scholl has already announced that he plans to run in that election. “Before I was appointed, I was already planning to run for Martinez’s seat as a Republican candidate,” Scholl said on May 2, following meetings with the county attorney, county administrator and others. His swearing-in ceremony will take place at the May 18 county commission meeting in Key West, which is the district Scholl now represents. Scholl’s District 3 seat covers the western part of Key West. Commissioner Craig Cates represents District 1, which includes the eastern side of Key West, Stock Island and Key Haven. In an odd bit of district numbering, Commissioner Michelle Coldiron represents District 2, which stretches from Boca Chica up to the Seven Mile Bridge, including the north side of U.S. 1 to 63rd Court in Marathon.

A RUN FOR THE BOOKS Dolphins’ championship game cut short by Mother Nature ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com

T

he 2022 Marathon Dolphins baseball team’s season has been nothing short of historic. On April 29, ahead of the Fins’ South Florida Baseball Conference (SFBC) championship game against Ransom Everglades – the squad’s first appearance in the game since 2012 – the team made a clean sweep of several individual awards. Standout senior outfielder Ben Hiller was honored as the SFBC Player of the Year. Head coach Joey Gonzalez capped off an impressive regular and postseason run as the SFBC Coach of the Year. 10 Dolphins earned All-Conference team nods. And yet, just a few hours later, the team had every right to feel robbed. Trailing the Raiders by only one run in the top of the seventh inning, with the top of the Fins’ lineup due up to the plate if they could retire three Ransom Everglades players, a constant rain both teams had played through over the course of the game turned hazardous as lightning strikes moved into the area. After multiple weather delays, the game was finally called off, squashing any chance for walk-off heroics from Marathon’s most consistent bats and handing the Spartans the conference tournament title. “It was honestly just heartbreaking to know that my team and my coaches worked all of our varsity careers to get to this stage,” said Hiller. “We were playing an amazing game all game. … Then the lightning struck, and they called the game, and all the emotions came out.” The Dolphins opened with a strong showing, stringing together multiple-run innings en route to a 7-3 lead before a furious Ransom Everglades rally in the top of the sixth forced Marathon to pull starting pitcher Dylan Ziels. The Raiders retook the lead, scoring four unanswered runs to go up 8-7. What would eventually become Marathon’s final chance to tie the game came at the end of the sixth inning, when Hiller found himself stranded on third base as Ransom Everglades notched the final out of the game before the lightning strikes. “There’s nobody to blame,” said Gonzalez. “I’m really, really pleased with what we were able to do.” The players had no reason to hang their heads, as their body of work was enough to secure the school’s first-ever regular season

conference championship. And while they undoubtedly wish Friday’s result had been different, it was the first time the team had reached the game since 2012 – when Gonzalez himself was on the roster. “I have (our regular season title) up in my classroom right now for all the boys to see when they come through,” Gonzalez said. “And then, of course, our runner-up title for the tournament. It gives them a lot of motivation. We know we’re going to be in that position next year as long as everyone continues to stick to the plan.” Though both Gonzalez and Hiller deflected praise and deferred to the team’s accomplishments when speaking to Keys Weekly, the pair’s well-deserved awards recognized critical contributions as the team reached encouraging new heights – both on the diamond and beyond. “Ben is the face of what we’ve been able to do for the past four years,” said Gonzalez. “He knows what he wants for the team, and he’s going to push every single guy to their limits to make sure we get to that point.” Though Hiller’s contributions as a batter, outfielder and closer were remarkable – a .500 batting average, a .605 on-base percentage and a .672 slugging percentage, with 29 hits and 14 RBIs – Gonzalez believes Hiller’s character and professional conduct made him a true standout. “There was so much excellent talent in our conference … but I told him going into this that (character) matters a lot more,” said Gonzalez. “They are going to take into account what type of person you are. And there’s not a person on that baseball field better and more kind-hearted than Ben.” Hiller and fellow seniors Corbin Neller, Cole McDaniel and Delvin Solis have been coached by Gonzalez since the sixth grade, when he started as a middle school coach. Hiller spoke glowingly about the coach who’s been with him through every part of the historic ride. “He helps all of us on and off the field in so many ways,” said Hiller. “Not even just how to field a ground ball … becoming a leader, being a man, being respectful, academics first and then baseball. He’s taught us all how to just grow up.” And though the team has leaned heavily on Gonzalez’s steady leadership on and off the field in the midst of a special postseason run, the coach was effusive in his praise for assistant coaches Luis Gonzalez Sr., Luis Gonzalez Jr., Kyle Pierce and Rafael Cordova as he spoke about his own personal accomplishment. Both he and Hiller especially noted the contributions of Pierce, who returned to the team as a pitching coach this year to solidify Marathon’s rotation on the mound. “It says my name on the plaque, but at the end of the day, that plaque represents our entire coaching staff and the kids who trusted us and put their belief in us to lead them to thrive,” said Gonzalez.

C

areer and Truck Day returned to Stanley Switlik Elementary School on April 29. Now in its 46th year, the annual event brought demonstrations and presentations from all ends of Monroe County. From indoor presentations by county officials and restaurant owners to outdoor demonstrations by bus drivers and law enforcement officers, students spent their days surrounded by career options from the Keys and beyond. Hours of presentations were capped off by a deafening school-wide farewell as students cheered the takeoff of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District helicopter. — Alex Rickert

MARATHON WEEKLY / MAY 5, 2022

KAREN VERRI WITH AMELIA AND DOMINIC

CARROLLYN COX (AND HER THEATER ‘KIDS’)

Plans for Mother’s Day? Relaxing at home by the pool in our backyard.

Mother’s Day plans this year? Talk to my three grown children and my own mother on the phone!

Best advice you’ve received about motherhood? Enjoy as much time with your kids as possible. It goes by so quickly and before you know it they will be all grown up. Best advice you would offer other mothers? Not to be so hard on yourself. You are doing a great job. Oftentimes we are our own worst critics and positive compliments can mean so much. Proudest “Mom moment” so far? Bringing home my youngest child from the NICU after a two-month stay when he was born.

Best advice you’ve ever gotten from any mom? Do the best you can; kids don’t come with instruction manuals. Best advice you’d give to other mothers? Talk less, listen more. Proudest “mom moment” so far? Other than attending the college graduations of my three children … watching Claire on stage singing, dancing, and acting her heart out in “American Idiot” (pre-pandemic). Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life? Meryl Streep

In a movie about your life, who would you want to play you? Mila Kunis.

VIVIANA TORRES WITH AMY & IAN Mother’s Day plans this year? I will be meeting with my children (Amy & Ian), my husband (Javi) and some friends and family to celebrate Mother’s Day at the end of this month. Best advice you’ve ever gotten from any mom? My mom always told me not to give my kids every material thing they want or ask for just because you want to give them everything that you did not have. Sometimes a little difficulty also brings learning and creativity. Best advice you’d give to other mothers? Enjoy your children every minute while they are young. Time goes by very quickly. Proudest “mom moment” thus far? Every time a teacher tells me that my children are wonderful, smart, talented, kind and behave well. Also, I feel very proud of them when I teach them something that I think is very difficult for them and they understand it easily. Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life? Catherine Zeta-Jones.

JAZMIN LOPEZ WITH JULIUS BALTODANO Mother’s Day plans this year? I’m not sure. My husband just told me to be ready by 9 a.m., but as long as I’m with my son and husband I am happy. Best advice you’ve ever gotten from any mom? To be present and enjoy every stage because they don’t last long. Best advice you’d give to other mothers? Don’t be too hard on yourself. A child doesn’t need a perfect mom, but they do need a happy mom. Proudest “mom moment” so far? Watching my baby crawl for the first time. I can’t believe how fast he is growing. Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life? Gal Gadot. She is such a badass. Can I say badass? You can edit that out if I can’t.

JESSICA LUGO Mother’s Day plans this year? Hoping for a spa day but definitely brunch with my teenage daughter. Best advice you’ve ever gotten from any mom? “You can be a mess and still be a good mom.” Best advice you’d give to other mothers? “Remember you are the boss, not them!” Proudest “mom moment” thus far? When my daughter Jayda was about 6, she received an award for basketball. While taking a team picture, she smiled and said, “Mom, I get to take this with me to college.” Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life? J-Lo

BETTE ZIRKELBACH WITH BELLE AND BING

STEPHANIE ZAJAC WITH NOAH Mother’s Day plans this year? The plan is no plan! There’s always a plan and always a schedule. To just have no plan, relax, sit in my giant egg chair with a glass of red wine reading my book sounds like the best plan. Best advice you’ve ever gotten from any mom? Take a sunset walk with the baby from the moment you are able to walk after giving birth. It gets you out of the house at a very calm and enjoyable time and starts to set a schedule of differentiating between night and day for the baby. Best advice you’d give to other mothers? You’re doing an amazing job. Proudest “mom moment” so far? It’s crazy to think that all those really simple little things that we do every day are the proudest mom moments. The first time he smiled, laughed, clapped his hands, stuck out his tongue, every moment I cheered like my favorite team won the Super Bowl. But my proudest mom moment has to be him actually using his sign language to communicate.

MARIA TERESA VILLEGA GARCIA WITH LEONEL AND MARTIN Mother’s Day plans this year? I plan to enjoy my Mother’s Day by spending time with my family this year. Best advice you’ve ever gotten from any mom? To enjoy my life as a mom while it lasts because kids grow up really fast. Best advice you’d give to other mothers? I have two kids, so I would say to have two kids so they can grow up together and make memories together. Proudest “mom moment” so far? My proudest mom moment would probably be when I held my kids in my arms for the very first time. Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life? Livia Brito

Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life? Cameron Diaz or Christina Applegate

MEGHAN BOLEN RICHARDSON WITH SHANNON & TWINS JONATHAN & OWEN Plans for Mother’s Day? No real plans, just hoping to relax at home and maybe go kayaking. Champagne will be involved at some point. I also get the treat of Jonathan being home from UF so I’m looking forward to hanging out with him and listening to his stories about freshman year.

Proudest “mom moment” so far? That’s really tough as my kids impress me every day with what awesome people they are. I suppose I’m most proud that we all genuinely like each other and enjoy each other’s company and conversation. Best advice you’ve received about motherhood? My dad once told me I am enough. I was having a low mommy moment and feeling anything but sufficient. Sometimes I (and I’m guessing other moms) get so caught up in feeling like we have to be more, do more, have more for our kids. Dad reminded me that I was already enough for my kids just by being a loving mom to them. It was wonderful advice.

Mother’s Day plans this year? I will be taking a much needed weekend off … dancing and listening to live music at JazzFest in NOLA. Best advice you’ve ever gotten from any mom? The best advice I’ve ever gotten was from my Mom: “Don’t let the turkeys get you down.” Best advice you’d give to other mothers? You got this! You are stronger than you know. Being a Mom brings out your inner strength.

ERIN VOELLIGER WITH ZOE AND EMMA Mother’s Day plans this year? I will be spending the day with my family playing and relaxing at the beach and in the water. Then I’m going home to eat an awesome steak from Fish Tales!

Proudest “mom moment” so far? I am most proud of how both of my children see a world so much bigger than themselves. They are caring and nurturing. I will never forget when they came home to tell me they found an owl on the side of the street that was hurt and may be dead. We gathered up some rescue gear and the “owl” ended up being a common nighthawk in distress. We carefully put the bird in a carrier and took him to the Wild Bird Center, where Kelly walked the kids through examining the injured bird. Most people would never even have noticed the injured bird camouflaged so well with the hardwood hammock ground cover.

Best advice you’ve ever gotten from any mom? Choose your battles wisely! For example, all those adorable outfits your child has don’t have to be worn together so they match and look cute … especially if your child is getting themself dressed! (Remember this when you see me in public)

Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life? Gal Gadot.

Proudest “mom moment” so far? It feels impossible to pick one moment. However, I definitely feel proud when I see my children enjoying each other’s company.

Best advice you’d give to other mothers? Stop and smell the roses, literally! And pick up sticks, collect rocks and leaves, watch the lizards run around, and look for shapes in the clouds. Enjoy the little moments because, as the saying goes, the days may be long but the years are oh so short.

Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life? Drew Barrymore

Best advice you would offer other mothers? Be kind to other mommas. Parenting never gets easier, it just changes and I’m pretty sure most of us are winging it on a daily basis. While we’re doing the best we can, there’s not a lot of time to catch your breath before one phase (that you finally mastered) ends and another (that you have no clue how to handle) begins. So be kind, because while we make it look easy, it’s a tough gig.

More than 600 anglers compete in annual Bull & Cow Dolphin Tournament

B

rutal conditions just one weekend earlier subsided in time for 79 boats to take to the waters off Marathon for the 2022 Tom Thumb Marathon Offshore Bull & Cow Dolphin Tournament. Out of 632 total anglers, team Contagious emerged victorious for the third time in the bull and cow combined weight category. The squad, composed of Don Delon, Rob Delon, Travis Bennett, Andy Cone and captain Brian Cone, tipped the scales with a massive 40.8-pound bull mahi paired with a 17.8-pound cow to capture the top slot. “We had great weather, and the people there loved it,” said tournament organizer captain Jack Carlson. “It was just a great all the way around tournament. We’ve been running this for a long time, and everybody has fun.” — Alex Rickert

Two Conchs brings in the largest blackfin tuna of the tournament with a 20.6-pound fish.

Team Contagious notched wins for highest combined bull and cow weight, largest dolphin overall, and highest three-dolphin combined weight. The Miami-based crew has won the tournament three times.

‘Young guns’ captain Tucker Carlson, J.C. Carlson, Clay Daniels and Michael Ruiz fished their way to a third place finish in the Largest Dolphin category as Marathon’s own Two Conchs team. The foursome reeled in a 36.4-pound fish.

ow that I’m officially just about one week post-knee replacement surgery, I thought it might be a good idea to summarize my experience in the format of a brochure that should be distributed to any potential patient considering this procedure. I have no real complaints; the surgery went well, and my hospital/rehab/therapy team has collectively been amazing. I have had absolutely superlative care, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend my team to anyone in my situation. Still, if I had known a few things … hence, here is the new (and completely unofficial) Pre-Operative Patient Guide for Patients Who Have Never Had Surgery. 1. Introduction: We’re glad you’re choosing us to be the ones to slice you open, cut off the ends of your leg bones at the knee joint, and screwing and gluing titanium replacement parts so that you’ll never make it through an airport metal detector ever again! We’re glad you’re here! Now, let’s go over some important information designed to ease you through the process. 2. Pre-Operative Concerns: As a matter of routine, we want to ensure you that you will survive this upcoming procedure. Therefore, you will need all sorts of clearances from your physicians, including a complete cardiac checkup and an EKG. While it might seem a bit much for a knee operation, no one — especially us — wants you to expire on the operating table! We’ll also need to see complete blood work, a chest X-ray, and you’ll need to pee in a cup for us as well. Don’t worry — we’ll extract more blood at the… 3. Pre-Op Hospital Check-In: Yes, we’ll need more blood and a lot more information so that the surgery that’s scheduled for the next day can proceed smoothly. We’ll ask you to check in at desks with arcane numbers and go into hidden rooms behind closed doors for more screenings, but don’t worry — it’s all under control! 4. Surgery Day: Woo hoo! It’s the big day! Trust me when I say that we’re just as excited as you are! When you check in, please leave everything, including your worries, behind. We’ve got you. We’ll get you into a changing room where you’ll shuck off your clothing and don one of our fashionable yet comfortable hospital gowns — one size fits … well, never mind. You’ll be lying on your back anyway. We’re going to give you some painkillers, and we will then begin to ask you the same questions, repeatedly, over and over again. This is to maintain that you are doing fine … and that we are operating on the correct knee! We’ll give you some injections

to numb things up, and then we will wheel you into the operating room. The anesthesiologist will lower a mask on your face, and then, BAM! You’re out! 5. Recovery: JOHN BAM! The lights BARTUS come back on, and the surgery is over! is the Mayor of You’ll awaken in the City of Maraa recovery room thon. He also is where the doctors a musician who and nurses will performs around ask you the same town. For more questions to ensure see johnbartus. that you are still the com same person that you were before. Once you pass the test, you will be wheeled into your own room where you’ll be monitored and checked for continued good vital signs and asked what you’ll want for dinner. A doctor or two will check on you to see if you’re ready to go home; while knee replacement can be an outpatient surgery, oftentimes everyone will feel better if you stay overnight in the hospital. Nurses and physicians will check in on you constantly, checking your vitals, bringing you medications (please be sure and take the stool softeners), and the big one — getting you up to walk around on your brand new knee! You’ll be surprised as to how bad it doesn’t feel … initially. After a fitful night of hospital sleep, the new morning greets you with a rehab class and… 6. The ‘Highland Hitman’ Todd (Ashley Andrews, right) threatens Agent Frank (Craig Zabransky).

A TALE OF TWO ROOMS

‘UNNECESSARY FARCE’ OPENS AT MCT NEXT WEEK

T

here are two cops, three crooks, two rooms and eight doors. Good luck keeping track of it all. Audiences will try their best during the run of Paul Slade Smith’s “Unnecessary Farce,” Marathon Community Theatre’s newest comedy. Directed by Diane Dashevsky, the show tells the story of a hilariously bungled police sting operation set between two adjacent motel rooms. As embezzling Mayor Meekly (Jim Zimmerman) and his bodyguard Agent Frank (Craig Zabransky) prepare to meet with his accountant Karen Brown (Noelle Belden) who seemingly has a hard time keeping her clothes on, officers Billie Dwyer (Sharon Young) and Eric Sheridan (Skip Lefler) prepare to catch the encounter on tape via a hidden camera with a video feed to the room next door. Hilarity ensues as the camera catches nearly every piece of incriminating evidence the motel room has to hide – though not the ones it was intended for. The cops’ plans are soon discovered by all the wrong people and complicated by the

interference of a hired gun from the Scottish Mob. The infamous “Highland Hitman,” played by Ashley Andrews, has an unusual habit: he dresses in a full kilt and serenades his marks with the bagpipes before their untimely demise. And while his Scottish accent is thick throughout the play, it becomes nearly – and purposely – unintelligible as he gets angry with his victims. “I came in and auditioned, and I hadn’t seen the script,” recalled Andrews. “(Diane) said, ‘Can you do Scottish?’ I said, ‘Give me 10 minutes.’ I went to the car, YouTubed how to do a Scottish accent, and 10 minutes later I read five pages of the script.” “I said, ‘Part’s yours if you want it,’ right there on the spot,” said Dashevsky. “Unnecessary Farce” is MCT’s most ambitious physical comedy in recent years. With actors dashing around, doors slamming, and action constantly shifting from one room to the next, the show relies on the physical placement of its characters just as much as, if not more than, the words coming out of their mouths.

“The doors are crazy,” said Andrews. “I haven’t done anything this physical in five years.” Dashevsky describes her cast as a “director’s dream,” saying that she has enjoyed allowing the experienced actors to experiment with their own direction beyond the basic skeleton of the movements, entrances and exits laid out by Smith. “I said, ‘Look, you’re all experienced actors. Your blocking is in the script. Anything else, I want to see what you bring,” said Dashevsky. “I wanted to give them that freedom.” With only a few rehearsals left until opening night, the cast was hard at work perfecting their timing with a script that only grows more hilarious as its frantic pace increases. The group is often challenged to run two conversations that cue off of one another simultaneously in the “separate” rooms – but not make it obvious that they’re doing so. “You’re taking cues, but not from the person you’re talking to. It’s from the person in the other room,” said Zabransky. “You’re still engaged in a conversation over here, and you wait for that line, and then you continue where you’re going.” “Unnecessary Farce” runs on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. from May 12-28, with a matinee on Sunday, May 22 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $28 and available by visiting www. marathontheater.org or calling 305-7430994. Patrons are advised that the show contains adult situations and language.

An aerial of Indian Key. FLORIDA MEMORY PROJECT/Contributed

PART 1

ATTACK ON INDIAN KEY HOW IT ALL STARTED ON AUG. 7, 1840 Editor’s Note: This is the first in a four-part series on Indian Key.

T

hose first few dark hours of Friday, Aug. 7, 1840, altered the history of the Florida Keys. The gibbous moon was growing fatter in the sky – it would appear fully engorged in six nights. Moonlight flickered across the Atlantic Ocean, causing twinkles of light to glint off the crescents of the BRAD gentle waves. On the small island just offshore of the Matecumbe keys, the chirr of cicadas wound up to a BERTELLI shrill calling only to stop as if an orchestra conductor is an author, had waved his wand. speaker, and FlorThe small, 11-acre island grew preternaturally ida Keys historian. quiet. The shingles of the warehouses, the tallest His latest book, structures in the wrecking village, eclipsed the tree line “The Florida Keys at the eastern edge of the island. Moonbeams pushed Skunk Ape Files,” is a fun blend of the dark silhouette of a picket fence against the ground two of his favorite in the town square. A single lantern glowed through subjects — Florida the dirty window of a two-room wooden shack on the Keys history and western edge of the island. the Skunk Ape. It was August in sub-tropical Florida, hot and muggy, even at 2 a.m. One of the island’s carpenters, a man named Glass, was miserable in his sweat-soaked bed. Unable to sleep, he rose from his bed and stepped outside in hopes of finding cool relief. Standing on the coral dust pathway, he listened as the wind rustled through buttonwood leaves and over coconut fronds. Glass took a deep breath and filled his lungs with the night air. He stretched his arms over his head as if reaching for the stars.

Taking in another deep breath, Glass began to look around. His eyes adjusted to the moonlight; trees began to define themselves. A rat scurried across the path and up the trunk of a buttonwood tree – its long branches stretched out over the water. Glass looked at the tree. Something was out of the ordinary, something out of place caught in the corner of his eye. It took a second and then another second for what he was seeing to register as the dark outlines of canoes pulled up onto the island’s limestone edge came into focus. They were Indian canoes. His heart thundered as he pointed his finger and counted – one, two, three, eight, 10, 12. The carpenter quickly turned and walked to the cottage next door, where he rapped gently on the door with a single, soft knuckle. Pushing the door open, it slowly creaked. “Beiglett,” he whispered. “Beiglett, wake up.” “How many times do I have to…” “Quiet, quiet. There’s Indians out there.” Beiglett spoke quietly. “What are you saying?’ “Get your shotgun. We need to go warn the captain.” Captain Housman lived in a two-story house facing east out over the water. To reach him, the two men would have to cross the town square in the middle of the island. Glass and Beiglett left the cottage but stayed close to its side as they worked their way cautiously toward the back of the house. With their backs against the wooden planks, they could make out the picket fence and the town square ahead. Beyond the square, Captain Housman’s house was off to the left on the other side of the island, and the warehouses stood to the right. Beiglett gripped his shotgun in his hands as the two men crept toward the picket fence. Hidden within the mix of light and shadow, the two men did not see the Indians. When they stumbled upon them, the melee began. One of the Indians raised his rifle and aimed it, but when he squeezed his finger against the trigger, the gun flashed but failed to burn enough to fire its ball. In what must have been a mutual reaction, Beiglett raised the muzzle of his shotgun and screamed as he pulled the trigger and fired in the direction of the Indians. Hearing Beiglett’s yell and thinking he had been shot, Glass ran off just as fast as possible. Unscathed, Beiglett ran, too. Initially, he ran across the town square and past the warehouse until he reached the pier at the island’s edge. He stooped down, crawled underneath, and hid. He was not the only one. A boy had been sleeping on the warehouse piazza. He was startled awake by the gunfire, if not the shrieks, and ran away from the warehouse to hide underneath the pier, too. Soon after, a third man crawled underneath to join them. The three of them huddled together, hiding beneath the narrow space separating the island from the deck of the wharf as the Indians began to ravage the island. Someone among them decided that it might be safer to abandon the wharf and run for the warehouses. Beneath the first floor of the second warehouse was a large cistern carved into the limestone by a mason. They crawled out from under the wharf and, one-by-one, stole across the path and up to the warehouse where a trap door led to the cistern. The two men and the boy slipped through the trap door and into the dark cistern’s chest-deep water. The door was lowered behind them. As the sun began to rise, light slipped between the cracks of the building. Curious about what was transpiring around them, Beiglett crept out of the cistern, into the warehouse, up the stairs, and into the cupola. From the third-story vantage point, he could see across the island. The Indians were everywhere.

ASK THE BIRD GEEK II: AVIAN BOOGALOO

A northern mockingbird, the official state bird of Florida. MARK HEDDEN/Keys Weekly

MARK HEDDEN

What should the Florida state bird be? – Nan From The Block Oh, man, I have opinions on this. Currently Flori... is a photograda’s state bird is the northern mockingbird. And while pher, writer, and it’s a damn fine species, nothing about it is particularly semi-professional birdwatcher. He Floridian. Its range spreads across 38 of the lower 48 has lived in Key states. Plus the northern mockingbird is also the state West for more than 25 years and bird for Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. It seems pretty daft to have the same state bird may no longer as four other states. Especially when there are so be employable in the real world. He many candidates that make more sense. The Ameriis also executive can flamingo would be a great state bird, as they are director of the Florida Keys Audu- already synonymous with the state of Florida. The argument against them is that, until recently, they bon Society. were officially considered extirpated from the state, and there actually aren’t that many of them, and none is known to have bred here for over well a century. The roseate spoonbill, Florida’s other pink bird, also would be a great candidate. There is a decent population of them in Florida, and who doesn’t love a spoonbill? I mean, there are people put off by the fact that its beak is shaped like an implement designed to eat cereal or soup, and the species does occur in the four other Gulf Coast states, but other than that it’s a great candidate. And no one else has chosen it as a state bird. There is a strong case to be made that a state bird should be one you can’t see anywhere else. And here in Florida, we currently only have one recognized endemic species – the Florida scrub-jay. Scrub-jays are friendly, curious birds, not particularly afraid of humans – they will sometimes land on your head for fun – and not inclined to wander more than a few miles away from where they were hatched. Their name comes from their extremely limited habitat – sandy xeromorphic shrub communities dominated by several species of diminutive oak trees, a.k.a. scrub habitat. But the chamber of commerce types, they don’t want no scrubs. Scrub jays are birds that can’t get no love from the legislature. It’s the name, which they think is unattractive. (As if a bird named for teasing and laughing at people in a scornful way is somehow better.) Also, there is the fact that the species is threatened, largely because most of their habitat has been converted into orange groves or housing tracts, which highlights Florida’s less-than-great record of protecting its wildlife. I am far from the only person who thinks the northern mockingbird is not really well suited to the state bird role. And there have been efforts to change it. In 1999 10,000 school children signed a petition asking that the Florida state bird be changed to the Florida scrub-jay. And an attempt to change it was made in the legislature, but the bill failed, largely due to the efforts of highly powerful National Rifle Association lobbyist Marion Hammer, who believed that since scrub-jays would occasionally take a peanut from someone’s hand, they were lazy and suffered from a “welfare mentality.” (I am not making that up.) In 2009 the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission surveyed 77,000 school kids and asked them what they thought the state bird should be. The clear winner was the osprey, with 20,000 votes. Efforts were made in the 2009 and 2010 to change the state bird to the osprey in the legislature, but both efforts failed, largely due to the efforts of Hammer.

In 2021 two bills were proposed – one to rescind the northern mockingbird’s state bird status, and one to name the Florida scrubjay to the role. Both were proposed, indefinitely postponed, then died in committee. Hammer again led the charge. I guess Florida scrub-jay would be my choice. But I’d be good with osprey or roseate spoonbill. Anything but the deeply uninspired choice of northern mockingbird. Not that I expect the folks in Tallahassee to embrace the will of the people over the influence of lobbyists any time soon. Do birds see me when I wave to them? – The Aptly Named Joy I mean, probably. Depends on the species. Hawks, definitely. From very far away. They could read your text messages from across a parking lot if they could read. So they would definitely see you wave. Songbirds like warblers and such could also see you, but you’d probably have to be closer. Sometimes I’ll be sitting very still on the back porch and a dove will come into the feeder and I’ll watch them for a while, then I’ll scratch my nose or something without thinking about it and the dove will take off in a panic. So doves would definitely see you wave. The question is, what does a person waving, presumably from a non-threatening distance, mean to a bird? (This is one of the many questions that will probably never be answered by science because of the stingy incuriosity of the people who dole out research grants.) To us a wave is a gesture of goodwill, of acknowledging the presence of others, of saying a low-key hello. But to them? How would they sort the meaning of that from all the other crazy things we do? Or, maybe they do understand what it means, and they’re like me, and can never remember anyone’s name, at least not right off the bat. And they kind of feel like jerks about it, so they maybe sometimes pretend they didn’t see the wave just so they could avoid an awkward situation. Or maybe they just haven’t figured out they should wave back. Either way, I think you should keep waving. There’s nothing wrong with waving (again, from a safe distance). The world could use a lot more people inclined to give a friendly wave. Got a question about birds that you’re dying to ask? Ask the Bird Geek at mark@boneisland.com.

FRONTIER FOLLIES By Ree Drummond Ree Drummond lives on a family-owned, 433,000-acre cattle ranch in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. While her life is unimaginably busy helping on the ranch – not to be mistaken for a farm – raising her four children, running a successful blog and business and her own cooking show, this woman miraculously finds time to share her hilarious, heartfelt and often wise essays about marriage and motherhood. After college, Ree, who grew up in a more metropolitan lifestyle, married her blue-eyed dreamy cowboy, Ladd. The day begins early on the Drummond Ranch, and it took time for Ree to consider waking in the dark “morning.” With more than an hour’s drive to any store, Ree had to quickly learn bulk buying, time management and a way to extract humor in the daily mishaps of ranch life. Always putting family first, this dynamic woman never failed to bring laughter to a tired table. While supporting the business and her children’s many endeavors, Ree found a way to build The Pioneer Woman company, never dreaming it could reach the success it has today. Written with great finesse, Ree manages to smooth the bumps of everyday life into a continuous and grateful celebration of family.

WORK, FAMILY AND TRADITION, THREE GREAT STORIES CELEBRATING THE WOMEN IN OUR LIVES.

THE BOOK WOMAN’S DAUGHTER By Kim Michele Richardson The packhorse librarians hold a special place in the heart of the majestic Kentucky mountains. Cussy Lovett, one of the Blue People of Kentucky, was one of the first women to enter these hills and spread the love of literacy to simple folks who had few luxuries. Backbreaking work in the mines and hunting in these remote hollows left the women taking care of children in ramshackle homes, while elderly relatives were left with little income. Honey Lovett, Cussy’s daughter, is 16 years old when her beloved parents are arrested for miscegenation. They are imprisoned and Honey struggles to find freedom and carry on her mother’s legacy as a packhorse librarian. Always ready to help a neighbor, Honey carries the same deep beliefs and honor as her mother. She knows that learning to read and write unquestionably changes lives. Befriending Pearl, the new female forestry fire-watcher, Honey learns firsthand how deeply prejudices and suppression run against Blues and women in general. Finding strength through newfound sisterhood and books, the two women attempt to establish their valuable place in the community. This wonderful sequel to The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek can easily stand alone. What a joy to climb back into the Appalachian Mountains and characters of Troublesome Creek.

ONE ITALIAN SUMMER By Rebecca Serle Katy’s entire life has fallen apart. She has lost taste, cannot sleep and no longer knows if she is meant to be married to Eric. The horrible illness and passing of her beloved mother has left her devoid of any feelings except utter sadness. On a whim, she decides to take the trip she had always dreamed of going on together: retracing her mother’s memorable summer in Positano, Italy. Katy is immediately swept away with sunshine and her mother’s memories, described in breathtaking detail over the years. One day, a woman at the front desk is mailing a package. By some magical twist of fate, it is Katy’s mother, Carol. Strangely, Carol is only 30 years old, and she is healthy and beautiful. Utterly shocked but grateful, the two become fast friends. While enjoying the idyllic surroundings and mouth-watering food, Katy sees her mother in a new light as an independent woman who dares to dream. As the days speed by, Katy is desperate to figure out her own reality. Come adore this enchanting armchair journey to the alluring town of Positano folded between the pages of a mother-daughter love story.
