nvasive, insatiable and largely unstoppable, monthly vacation rentals are the Burmese pythons of Key West, devouring the city’s housing inventory and devastating its workforce to the brink of extinction.

Key West city officials on May 3 unanimously blamed the much of the city’s housing crisis and worker shortage on the proliferation and profitability of vacation rentals.

But unlike pythons, vacation rentals are protected by law. The Florida Legislature won’t let cities or counties eradicate invasive vacation rentals or control their population to any meaningful degree.

At their meeting May 3, city commissioners received a harsh reminder that the state government prohibits local governments from restricting vacation rentals unless a local law was in place prior to 2011.

Key West did have such a law in place back then, but it only addresses transient, or short-term, rentals of less than a month. Rentals of a month or more were not restricted in 2011, and now they can’t be.

Years ago, officials recognized the threat of transient – including nightly and weekly – rentals to residential neighborhoods and the community fabric. So they capped the number of transient rental licenses, and refused to issue any new ones.

There are currently 851 transient rental licenses in existence, City Attorney Shawn Smith told the commission, adding that there are 2,509 monthly rental licenses.

Those rules will remain valid as long as they’re never changed in any significant way, which would invalidate them, Smith told the commission.

“What we have is what we have,” he said.

And what we have is the unchecked spread of monthly rentals and almost no authority to control them. While transient rentals disturbed full-time residents, monthly rentals displace them.

Buildings that once housed three apartments and six or eight workers have been remodeled and replaced by luxury, single-family vacation homes that now rent for $10,000 to $14,000 per month.

Monthly rentals weren’t a problem 10 or 15 years ago. But they are now.

Unlike the limited transient rental licenses, Smith reminded the commission, any property owner, anywhere in Key West, can go to City Hall, pay $21 for a business license and legally rent their house out for a month or more, whether through a real estate agent, property management company or AirBnB. There are no restrictions on monthly vacation rentals, Smith emphasized to correct the misperception that illegal rentals are the bulk of the problem. Legal, licensed monthly rentals are an equal or larger problem because of their prevalence.

Smith acknowledged that some owners are renting their places out weekly without a costly transient rental license. Those violators can

l a t n e r n o i t a Va c and should be investigated, fined and criminally prosecuted, Smith said. Others are renting by the month without the $21 city license, which is hardly an impediment and easily rectified if and when the violator is caught.

But, he said, heightened enforcement efforts and higher licensing fees could help, if not cure, the problem. Smith also said the commission would need to support additional code and police officers come budget time for these efforts to be effective.

Key West is not alone in its crisis, officials agreed. Miami Beach is working on some legislation “that we can learn from,” said Smith, who’s watching it closely.

Commissioner Jimmy Weekley wanted to know if cities could file some sort of class-action lawsuit against the state. Commissioners Sam Kaufman and Billy Wardlow, who represent New Town districts, said the vacation rental onslaught is affecting neighborhoods that have never before been affected.

Smith promised to draft a potential ordinance in the coming month or so for commissioners to consider.

Former Key West city commissioner Margaret Romero, known for her trademark hairstyle, filed paperwork on May 4 to officially enter the Key West mayor’s race.

“The time has come for the community to once again respect one another and for every voice to be heard,” Romero told the Keys Weekly on May 4.

She is the only candidate so far to challenge incumbent two-term Mayor Teri Johnston, who told the Keys Weekly she never expected to run unopposed and is not surprised by Romero’s decision. “I think you should always run in anticipation of a challenger,” said Johnston, who has raised nearly

$51,000 so far. “Our team is ready and it’s been our strategy all along to run an issue-oriented campaign.”

The mayor’s race is nonpartisan, but is closely watched and heatedly campaigned.

A native Conch, Romero challenged Johnston for mayor in 2018, when Johnston received 66% of the vote to Romero’s 34%.

Prior to being elected mayor in 2018, Johnston had served eight years as a city commissioner, then took a few years off before re-entering city politics.

Romero speaks at nearly every city commission meeting and regularly questions lawmakers and initiatives.

The general election is Nov. 8, but if one mayoral candidate receives 50% plus one vote in the August primary, the race will be determined then.

GOVERNOR OKS FUNDING FOR NEW SHELTER DESANTIS APPROVES $4.3M TO REBUILD KEYS OVERNIGHT TEMPORARY SHELTER MANDY MILES

The Keys Overnight Temporary Shelter for homeless people may have to be renamed once it’s rebuilt with $4.3M in federal funds approved for that use this week by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

When KOTS first opened in 2004 and until the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020, the shelter was only open in the evenings.

Users would check in around 6 p.m. nightly and had to leave the shelter around 7 a.m.

Since COVID, the shelter has been operating 24 hours a day rather than just overnight. County Commissioner Craig Cates noted that has led to a decrease in homeless people and panhandling in downtown Key West.

Key West city commissioner Sam Kaufman, who has long been an advocate for KOTS and the homeless, applauded the state funding announcement, telling the Keys Weekly, “The amount is close to the amount budgeted, but I’m not sure about final numbers. City approval for the new emergency homeless shelter construction on Stock Island and the $4.3 million award from the state is wonderful news. Replacing the current shelter has been a high priority for city management and now we are seeing progress. We are very pleased that construction is planned to begin in January 2023.”

The new KOTS is in the design phase and will be rebuilt as a permanent structure on land provided to the city on College Road by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, in exchange for land in Key West, where the sheriff plans to build employee housing.

When built, the new shelter will continue to operate 24 hours a day. But during construction, city and county officials are discussing preliminary plans to house the homeless at the vacant Bayshore Manor, a former assisted-living facility, just down the street on College Road. Those plans have not yet been approved by either the city or

county commission and remain in the discussion stages.

The funding for the new KOTS is included in $22 million for 15 Florida communities that the governor approved for broadband, infrastructure and workforce development programs in Florida communities.

Administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the funds are federal dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that are designed to help local governments prepare for, prevent or respond to the health and economic impacts of the pandemic, a press release from the governor’s office states.

“Awarded projects must be critical to the locality and primarily benefit low- and moderate-income residents. Local governments are encouraged to include activities that benefit workforce housing, training and sustainability, as well as broadband infrastructure and planning,” it states.

“These awards will support projects including expanding broadband internet services, improvements to community centers, and small business grants,” the release says.

DeSantis “has a strong vision for Florida’s economy, and thanks to his leadership, we have made economic resiliency a priority in Florida,” said Florida DEO Secretary Dane Eagle in the release. “This funding will help meet communities’ needs as they continue to grow stronger and prepare for future crises.”

“I

’ve always said I don’t run for office; I run from office,” the Florida Keys’ newest county commissioner told the Keys Weekly on May 2.

Jim Scholl, former Key West city manager and naval aviator who commanded Naval Air Station Key West in the early 2000s, didn’t run for the office of county commissioner, but rather was appointed last week by Gov. Ron DeSantis to fulfill the term of Eddie Martinez, who resigned in December 2021 following his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence.

Martinez’s term would have ended in 2024, but because he resigned with more than 28 month remaining, Scholl’s appointment “only lasts until one week after the next general election,” Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin said, meaning the seat will be up for grabs this coming November.

Scholl said he plans to run for the seat in the coming 2022 election.

“Before I was appointed, I was already planning to run for Martinez’s seat this November as a Republican candidate,” Scholl told the Keys Weekly on May 2.

His swearing-in ceremony will take place at the May 18 county commission meeting in Key West, part of which Scholl now represents. His District 3 seat covers the western part of Key West. Commissioner Craig Cates represents District 1, which includes the eastern side of Key West, Stock Island and Key Haven.

“I certainly understand the issues, I’ve been paying attention and I know everyone involved,” Scholl said, adding that he has maintained good relationships with military leaders at NAS Key West as well as city of Key West and county officials. He lists workforce housing, sea level rise and resiliency and quality of life for residents among his top issues and priorities for the county.

“We have some serious things to figure out when it comes to sea level rise and adaptability and which projects make sense to do,”

he said. “When it comes to quality of life, investors buying up all property in the Keys obviously has a huge impact on quality of life, but of course, property owners have property rights. And our workforce housing situation is devastating to everyone,” he said.

With regard to politics in general, Scholl said, “Of course rhetoric gets stirred up in social media to exacerbate a problem that may not even exist. It’s embarrassing and disappointing that we’ve lost our sense of knowledge from history lessons. The easiest way to cause big problems is to demonize something, and social media makes that easier than ever before.”

“There’s so much information now in the public domain, but no one wants to go to the actual source or use critical thinking to evaluate those sources,” Scholl said. “We all need to work together for the greater good, not personal gain.”

OVID-19 cases are ticking upward in Monroe County, but they aren’t leading to serious illness and the need for hospitalization among the infected.

The Florida Health Department report that’s now released every two weeks reported 91 COVID-19 cases in Monroe County between April 15 and April 21. In that span, Florida reported 20,860 COVID cases.

A new case positivity rate of 8.1% in the Keys is above the state’s 6.1% average. But hospitals aren’t reporting seeing increased patients who are in need of inpatient care.

Lower Keys Medical Center reported one COVID positive patient receiving treatment as of May 2.

LKMC spokeswoman Lynn CorbettWinn said the facility hasn’t seen a significant rise in COVID hospitalizations in the past month.

Baptist Health South Florida’s hospitals in the Keys reported no patients receiving treatment at Mariners or Fishermen’s hospitals as of May 2. While the health department in Monroe County is watching the situation closely, Bob Eadie, health officer for Monroe County, said the recent COVID-19 wave isn’t causing any major concerns. Those who are vaccinated and come down with COVID are experiencing cold symptoms for a brief period before they begin to recover.

“It’s not unexpected or unusual to see the epidemic evolve and the virus evolve. But it doesn’t seem to cause serious illness, and that’s a relief as far as that goes,” he said.

Sore throat, cough, congestion and fever are among the symptoms appearing upon exposure to the virus. Symptoms may appear two to 14 days after the exposure.

Like influenza and the cold, Eadie said, experts are now saying that people will live in a world with COVID. In the northern states, waves will likely be seen during the colder months. In states like Florida, waves could be seen during the warmer months.

“We’ve learned to live with the cold and influenza. There’s no reason we can’t figure out how to live with this.”

“During colder months, you have people inside and closer together as opposed to warmer months. That would drive spikes,” he said. “With the presumption of travel, you have people coming from so many different areas of the country to the Keys. You have a constant change of people and that increases exposure to the virus.

“We’ve learned to live with the cold and influenza. There’s no reason we can’t figure out how to live with this,” he continued.

Eadie added that vaccines remain effective against the virus and the various strains. Those who are inoculated and still come down with COVID only see mild symptoms. He also urges using common sense, like staying home if sick and staying away from big crowds.

A total of 61,386, or 84% of the population, in Monroe County have received a vaccine. That’s tied for second best in Florida with Broward County.

Best advice you’ve received about motherhood? Feeding my child the “natural way” and the positive impact of a Montessori education. I was fortunate to have a very healthy baby and I attribute it to the chosen feeding method during the first year, and the Montessori education she received during her primary years continues to have an impact on her approach to learning and growing.

Best advice you would offer other mothers? In addition to the above, I would add for the parent and child to find an activity/routine/ tradition that only you and your child share.

The memories of that bond will carry into your child’s adulthood. On Sunday afternoons we would go for bike rides to visit her “Meka’s” final resting place in the cemetery, then go have crepes at Le Creperie. Whenever Devin comes home for a visit, we still make time to do this activity.

Proudest “Mom moment” so far? Devin’s first year as a 4th grade teacher in an innercity elementary school during the height of the pandemic and all learning was remote. Can you imagine? I became her guidance counselor, and as all moms would say, “I was happy to do so.”

Best advice you’ve received about motherhood? Enjoy as much time with your kids as possible. It goes by so quickly and before you know it they will be all grown up.

Best advice you would offer other mothers? Not to be so hard on yourself. You are doing a great job. Oftentimes we are our own worst critics and positive compliments can mean so much.

Proudest “Mom moment” so far? Bringing home my youngest child from the NICU after a two-month stay when he was born.

In a movie about your life, who would you want to play you? Mila Kunis.

But we will say, if it’s a girl, her middle name will be Carol, which was my late grandmother’s name. She was a very special woman in my life. Our family is just finding this out as they read this piece — SMILE! Any pregnancy advice you’d pass on to other expectant, new moms? Take it in. …

Everything moves so quickly. Days, hours and minutes keep moving forward. Keep a journal, document your memories, take tons of pictures, and try to live in each day to remember the journey. These will all become very special moments and memories for yourself and the little baby.

How does it feel to be an expectant mother in your 40s? I feel healthy and amazing! Having a baby in your 40s is a miracle and very special for moms-to-be. Due to advances in technology surrounding fertility, pregnancy and delivery, it is possible to safely have a baby at age 40, or older. Try to stay in shape, eat healthy and keep moving!

Best advice you’ve received about motherhood? Get off Google. You will drive yourself absolutely crazy with wanting to know and learn every single thing that happens. Know that you are doing an amazing job and lean on your family and friends for support when needed.

Biggest wish for your newborn? To be a healthy, loved and happy little baby.

Biggest fear about being a mom? Failure is a very hard thing and word, but that is my fear. Josh and I want to give this little baby the world and more.

Any bizarre pregnancy cravings? In these past four months, my body has definitely wanted more food. Topping the list would have to be Cool Ranch Doritos and a sausage, egg & cheese croissant from Dunkin Donuts.

Proudest “Mom moment” so far? That’s really tough as my kids impress me every day with what awesome people they are. I suppose I’m most proud that we all genuinely like each other and enjoy each other’s company and conversation.

Best advice you’ve received about motherhood? My dad once told me I am enough. I was having a low mommy moment and feeling anything but sufficiency. Sometimes I (and I’m guessing other moms) get so caught up in feeling like we have to be more, do more, have more for our kids. Dad reminded me that I was already enough for my kids just by being a loving mom to them. It was wonderful advice.

Best advice you would offer other mothers?

Be kind to other mommas. Parenting never gets easier, it just changes and I’m pretty sure most of us are winging it on a daily basis. While we’re doing the best we can, there’s not a lot of time to catch your breath before one phase (that you finally mastered) ends and another (that you have no clue how to handle) begins.

So be kind, because while we make it look easy, it’s a tough gig.

CONCH BASEBALL STARTS POSTSEASON WITH A SHUTOUT WIN KEY WEST BEAT MIAMI KILLIAN TWICE LAST WEEKEND

L

ast weekend, the Key West Conchs faced off against the Miami Killian Cougars, winning one game easily, and the other by a single run. Their postseason adventure started on May 3, with a 17-0 victory over the Sunset Knights.

The Conchs walked away from the April 29 game with an 11-1 victory in five innings.

Key West put the game out of reach in the third inning by scoring six runs.

Jacob Burnham started on the mound for the Conchs and gave up the only run Killian managed to score in the first inning on a sacrifice fly. Burnham continued to pitch three more innings, giving up no hits and no walks, striking out four batters. The Conchs responded in the bottom of the first, tying the game on a sacrifice fly from Jack Haggard scoring Noah Burnham, who had singled early in the inning.

Miami Killian’s pitching was wild, hitting four Conchs with pitches starting in the second inning and walking seven Key West batters. Anden Rady collected his first hit-bypitch as the first batter of the second inning.

He would go on to score after Jose Perdigon doubled on a line drive to left field.

The Conchs’ bats got fired up in the bottom of the third. Haggard started the inning with a single, followed by a walk to Kai Smith.

Rady singled to center field, scoring Haggard. Perdigon singled, scoring Smith. Jason Yarbrough walked, followed by a single from Anthony Lariz, which scored Rady.

Preston Herce homered on a ball to deep center, scoring three runs that brought the Conchs to six runs in the third inning. In the fourth inning, two Conch batters were hit by pitches, including Rady, who had to come out of the game after being hit in the face.

Killians’ pitching walked in the Conchs’ only run in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, Felix Ong came in to pitch and gave up a hit to start the inning, then came back to strike out consecutive batters.

Going into the bottom of the fifth, the Conchs needed two runs to end the game with a mercy rule, and that’s exactly what they got.

Herce started the inning with his second homer of the game to center field. The game ended after Smith singled to score Trevor Zuelch, putting the Conchs ahead by 10 runs.

Herce led the way for the Conchs, totaling four runs batted in. Herce, Haggard, Perdigon and Lariz collected two hits each for the Conchs.

On April 30, the Conchs recognized their five seniors before the start of the game: Smith, Herce, Zuelch, Yarbrough and Billy Kight, who came in as a relief pitcher for the Conchs. Saturday night’s game was a highscoring back and forth contest between the Conchs and the Cougars. Marlin Takovich started on the mound for the Conchs and lasted two innings after striking out three and giving up three hits and five runs, yet not a single one was earned. The runs started in the first inning, when the Cougars scored their first run of the game on a passed ball.

The Conchs responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Haggard gave the Conchs their first hit and run of the game when he doubled, scoring Herce. Killian walked in the next Conch run, followed by a single from Gabe Williams that scored two runs.

The Conchs gave up four runs in the top of the second, two of which came from a home run. The Conchs responded once again by scoring three runs on a collection of well-placed hits by Haggard, Smith and Sam Holland.

In the top of the third, Kight came in to pitch, giving up the lone run of the inning for the Cougars. In the top of the fourth, Ong came onto the mound, giving up two runs in the inning.

Heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Conchs were losing by one run and came out of theinning tied after Herce scored on a wild pitch.

Ong continued to pitch through the fifth and sixth innings, not giving up a run until the top of the seventh. He tallied five strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.

Herce led off the bottom of the sixth.

Getting hit by a pitch, he went on to score after Zuelch hit a hard line drive to left field.

A series of walks loaded the bases for Perdigon, who singled to score Zuelch, giving the Conchs the cushion they needed going into the seventh. Haggard came in to close out the game for the Conchs in the middle of the seventh, striking out the last two batters of the game.

The Conchs took the hard-fought victory against the Cougars 10-9. The Conchs ended their regular season with two wins, sending them into the postseason at 19-6. Following their first postseason win over the Sunset Knights, their record improved to 20-6.

A PERFECT MUSICAL FIT FOR KEY WEST

Fans of Queen, Adam Lambert and Kristen “KMAC” McNamara poured into Key West’s Coffee Butler Amphitheater on April 28 to hear songs by all three.

Adam Lambert, who is currently touring with Queen on lead vocals that were formerly the role of Freddie Mercury, performed a solo show in Key West that included five or so Queen songs.

Lambert, who is also enjoying a meteoric rise in his solo career with two Top 100 albums, also treated the crowd to his own songs and a few universally loved covers.

Lambert took the stage following a great set by Kristen McNamara.

After discovering Key West through the Key West Songwriters Festival in 2010, McNamara fell in love with the people and heartbeat of the island and made it her home. She wrote a popular song called “Duval Street” and fits in with the locals as she walks her dog Truffles and rides her bike to gigs.

MOTHER’S DAY ISN’T ALWAYS A JOY KEY WEST MOM SHEDS LIGHT ON PARENTAL ALIENATION

W

hile the second Sunday in May brings love, flowers, handmade cards and heartfelt thanks to millions of mothers across the world, it can be a bittersweet reminder for children of all ages who have lost their mothers. It can also be unbearable for mothers who have endured the anguish of burying a child, or who have lost the love of a child due to parental alienation.

A relatively recent term that has gained awareness and legal attention in the past 15 or so years, parental alienation occurs when a parent, or an adult a child trusts, criticizes the child’s other parent in an effort to turn the child against them, often using their influence to make the child believe falsehoods about the targeted parent.

Common examples include a father or mother telling a child the other parent doesn’t love them, doesn’t want them, won’t protect them or is an alcoholic or addict.

Most prevalent in cases of divorce and contested custody, parental alienation can be mild and temporary, or extreme and ongoing.

“Most researchers believe that any alienation of a child against a parent is harmful to the child’s emotional and mental health,” states the National Parental Alienation Awareness website. “Extreme, obsessive, and ongoing parental alienation can cause terrible psychological damage to children extending well into adulthood.”

Parents targeted by parental alienation join forces each year on April 25 to raise awareness of the issue that destroys a child’s most important relationships with both of their parents.

Jenn Stefanacci Portier, a Key West mother and business owner, who is currently the target of parental alienation by the father of her son, spent April 25 walking 11.4 miles around Key West with her husband, Grant Portier, in honor of her 11.4-year-old son, who she says has been “brainwashed” by his father against her to the point that he refused to spend his designated weekends with her despite Stefanacci Portier having joint custody and visitation rights outlined by the family courts.

“A lot of people automatically think that for a kid not to be living with the mom, the mom must have done something egregious, but it’s the complete opposite with me,” she said. “Everyone for generations has known that the mom gets the kid, but nobody really understands what goes with parental alienation.”

Despite the court allowing her son’s father to move away from Key West with their son, Stefanacci Portier spent countless weekends on the mainland with her son for years, attending his baseball games and taking part in various activities with him. Then, suddenly and without explanation, her son refused to see her and his father refused to compel him.

When police were called to intervene due to violations of custody and visitation arrangements, they told the mother that it was a civil issue and they could not help, Stefanacci Portier said, adding that she has taken the father to court, and has nearly been bankrupted by legal fees that amount to $140,000 so far.

In preparation for April 25, she and her husband, Grant Portier, attended a parental alienation retreat at the Family Resolution Center in Jacksonville, where they realized how pervasive the problem has become.

“The fact that there was even a need for a parental alienation retreat means this is way bigger and affects way more parents, grandparents, and families then we imagined,” she said. “For a while, I believed only a few were going through this nightmare and even less understood it.

Over the past year, I have slowly spoken out about PA. I was afraid of retribution and embarrassed to explain my situation. How could a loving child who adored his mom for 10 years completely cut off all communication to her, her extended family, and his father’s side of the family as well?”

Stefanacci Portier is now an outspoken advocate for raising awareness and changing family court processes so officials are more vigilant about its potential.

“One of the largest studies into the incidence and prevalence of parental alienation was conducted … in 1991 over a 12-year period,” according to the National Center for State Courts. The researchers found that in 86% of the 1,000 cases they studied “there was some element of parental programming and brainwashing in an effort to implant false and negative ideas about the other parent, with the intention of turning the child against that other parent.”

If more people know about how parental alienation works, and how damaging these behaviors are to children, then more people can help deal with the problem, Stefanacci Portier said.

When I got there, the team had been sold by Les Harrison a year earlier and recreated as the Cincinnati Royals (later the Kansas City Royals and now the Sacramento Kings).

To satisfy what few pro-basketball fans were still left in Rochester, the Cincinnati Royals were still playing a few games there, I suppose against each of the other league teams. So, covering the games wasn’t a major assignment. Give it to the new kid.

I loved it. Unlike today, I could wander into the dressing rooms and interview coaches and players as I wished. I had been told about Maurice Stokes. He had been Rookie of the Year and set the league rebounding record when the team was in Rochester. He continued to be a leading player when the team moved to Cincinnati. However, at a road game, he fell and without a trainer or doctor, was sent back into the game having suffered a concussion.

On the flight back to Rochester, Stokes suffered an attack that paralyzed him. Jack Twyman was the leading Royals player and at those later games that I covered in Rochester, I would always interview Twyman to get an update on Mo Stokes.

There was never anything new. Stokes was still paralyzed, bedridden in Cincinnati. Except he needed someone to step up and take care of his medical and financial bills. Twyman, his teammate and still in his 20s, did just that, becoming his guardian. So, it was to Twyman I always went and he was always obliging.

A half dozen years later, I moved on to the Dayton Daily News in Ohio, this time as executive sports editor. My main boss at the paper was Chuck Glover, who was a sports nut. He knew a lot of people in sports. And he knew Jack Twyman, then of the Cincinnati Royals.

I learned through Glover that Stokes had learned to type by holding a pen in his mouth and had typed his thoughts as he lay in his hospital bed. I told Glover I wanted a copy of Stokes’ writings and, through Twyman, I got it, with the promise that I would not use it before Stokes died.

From Stokes’ account, I wrote a lengthy story, which I stored until April 6, 1970, the date on which Stokes died from a heart attack. He was 36 years old.

My story, which was mainly Stokes’ story, appeared in the Dayton Daily News the day following his death. It was placed across the top of page 1A, entered in the annual basketball feature writing contest and won first place nationally. I received a cash prize of a few hundred dollars, but more importantly, I received a plaque that has since had a favored place on the walls of my various homes.

I’m very proud of that honor. Yet, I could not have written that story without the words of a man who managed to type them with a pen clasped between his teeth. When the Jan. 11, 1966, NBA All-Star game was held in Cincinnati, I attended as a paying customer and spotted Stokes from afar in a wheelchair. It’s the only time I saw him.

There were several coincidences that led to my writing his story: Having my journalism professor at Ohio Wesleyan University, Verne Edwards, land me a job out of college at the Times-Union, where I could cover the pro basketball team. Moving on to Dayton, 50-some miles from Cincinnati, from where I could renew my acquaintance with Jack Twyman, working for a person, Chuck Glover, who was a sports buff, who also knew Twyman. And. of course, obtain the writing of Mo Stokes from which I could write my story from his story.

Those and a few more are all part of my story. It takes more than a writer with some kernels of information to compose a story. I was lucky.

LARRY BAEDER A MUSICAL LEGEND LIVING IN KEY WEST

A

t age 15, Larry Baeder put the violin down to focus on guitar, a deciBEN sion that would affect SOLOVE the lives of countless musicians and fans. ... is a local radio Baeder’s father personality and music promoter was attending college who loves to share in Philadelphia when his passion for Larry was born. The music. family moved back to Kansas City shortly thereafter. Larry is one of those special individuals who was born with the natural ability to grasp and understand music. At age 5, he began learning to play the violin. His parents were quite strict and encouraged him to practice three times daily and to focus on his gift. By age 16, Baeder was playing guitar professionally.

“I’m very fortunate in that I have never made money doing anything but playing or teaching music,” Baeder says.

“I wouldn’t even know what else to do if I had to.”

At 17, one of Larry’s mentors, the legendary Diane “Mama” Ray, spent an entire afternoon persuading Baeder’s parents to allow him to go on tour with her as her guitar player. That summer they took off for El Paso, Texas and toured several cities before returning to Kansas City.

When Larry turned 19, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career.

“I really did learn a lot about music and life in L.A.,” he recalls. “I had many great teachers there and was able to play with so many exceptional musicians. I enjoyed my time there, but being a young man, I found myself a bit homesick.”

He returned home and then received a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts, where he studied guitar and composition.

“I was actually a classical composition major,” he says. “I already knew the basics of reading music, but really expanded my ability to do so while at Berklee. Reading music is an especially important skill that has led to much of my success.”

Not long after graduation, Baeder ended up in New York City and formed a trio with two now-legendary musicians, drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez and bassist Charlie Torres. The trio played all over the city, including a place called Red Lion, where a young guitarist and singer/songwriter named John Mayer would often open for them.

Baeder eventually hooked up with bluesman and harmonica legend James Montgomery, who asked him to join his band. Baeder spent a good part of the next six years touring with the James Montgomery Band under the Capricorn Record label. They toured the world, often opening for acts like Bonnie Raitt, James Cotton, the Allman Brothers Band and Junior Wells.

Well-known producer Jimmy Miller eventually hired Baeder to do quite a bit of session recording, including playing guitar on a Buddy Guy album. Session work connected Baeder with some of the top recording artists on the scene.

He eventually helped form a band called East Coast Funk Busters, which included the great James Taylor, his brother Alex Taylor, actor/musician Dan Aykroyd and Baeder. They played the grand opening of the Hard Rock Café in Dallas with an all-star band that featured both Taylor brothers, Matt Murphy, Duck Dunn, Steve Cropper, James Montgomery, Chris Clifton and Baeder. The headliner for that show was the great Chuck Berry, with whom Baeder played on stage a dozen times in his career.

Baeder’s career has allowed him to play and tour with renowned bluesmen Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley and Junior Wells.

Over his career, Baeder had made multiple trips to Key West to play the Hog’s Breath, Green Parrot and other venues with various bands. In the early 2000s, as Baeder was set to become a father, he decided to move to Key West, where he knew he could continue to make a living playing music while being present to raise his twins.

“The scene here in Key West is simply fantastic.” Baeder said. “There are so many opportunities to play solo or alongside many talented musicians.”

Over the past two decades, Baeder has become an icon of the Key West scene. From his solo performances to his performances with his band the Muse Gurus to his work with legendary vocalist Terri White, to his unforgettable duo performances with the great Bill Blue, Baeder has become a fan favorite in Key West.

“What an honor it has been to play with so many great musicians here in Key West. All of them have had a profound impact on my life.” Baeder said. “Bill Blue really stands out to me. Bill is as deep a bluesman as anyone I have ever played with. He is absolutely the real deal, a true legend.”

Larry has stayed busy in 2022, having taken only a few days off since January.

He continues to play regularly and has begun writing music again. He plans to record at least one more album in the near future.

His involvement in mentoring and teaching young musicians would require another full column. Baeder won the Iggy Award for Mentor of the Year at the inaugural Key West Music Awards in January.

It was an honor to interview Larry Baeder, and I did my best to summarize his career and commitment in this column. But sharing his entire story, which should absolutely be done, would require an entire book.

he historic Waterfront Playhouse on Mallory Square will present the David Mamet comedy, “A Life in the Theatre,” opening Thursday, May 5 and playing until May 21.

One of Mamet’s earliest and gentlest plays, “A Life in the Theatre,” portrays the changing relationship of John and Robert, two actors — one older and experienced, the other a young up-and-comer — working together in a repertory company.

Robert, the older man, feels he has a great deal to teach John, and, as they work together in a series of shows, he passes on his wisdom.

John, the novice, hangs on Robert’s every word at first, knowing that he has a lot to learn. As time goes on, though, Robert becomes resentful of John’s success, and John tires of Robert’s cliche advice.

This sardonic love letter to theater follows the shifting power balance between two actors as they engage in backstage banter and play parodic scenes: a sub-Chekhovian comedy, a shipwreck melodrama, and a revolutionary epic, satirizing a vanished world. Mamet’s play examines our changing roles in life through the metaphor of the theater’s never-ending demand for new roles.

The play is directed by Tom Thayer, Waterfront artistic director, with set design by Michael Boyer, lighting design by Kris Hodge and stage managed by Trish Manley with Andrew Theede assisting.

This production will star John McDonald and Mathias Maloff.

McDonald attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts with a scholarship from the American Broadcasting Company.

His Broadway acting credits include New York Shakespeare Festival (“Macbeth” with James Earl Jones). On television, he had roles on “Love of Life,” “Guiding Light “and “Search for Tomorrow.”

In 1964 he was awarded Best Actor for his portrayal of Shylock, a role he recently portrayed in the Waterfront Playhouse’s “Something Rotten!” His Waterfront Playhouse roles have included “Clue,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Inspecting Carol,” and “1776 the Musical” at the Waterfront Playhouse.

Maloff will direct the reading of Ernest Hemingway’s “The Fifth Column” to be performed at the Waterfront. This season alone, Mathias has appeared in “All is Calm,” “Matilda the Musical,” “Clue” and, most recently, “Something Rotten.”

LOWER KEYS MEDICAL CENTER HAS BROAD IMPACT ON COMMUNITY

O

ver the course of a year, Lower Keys Medical Center makes a meaningful impact in the community, as the skilled and compassionate hands of physicians, nurses and other team members deliver safe, quality care around the clock every day.

Beyond clinical care, the hospital is a major employer and regularly invests resources to expand and enhance the services available locally. The overall community benefit totaled more than $87 million in 2021.

Last year, the hospital and Keys Medical Group providers delivered care during more than 128,000 patient visits as the pandemic heightened the need for medical attention. The hospital has supported more than 400 COVID inpatients since March 2020 while sustaining all of its other medical services. To help protect the community from the COVID-19 virus, more than 350 outpatients were treated with monoclonal antibodies, helping them avoid serious symptoms and hospitalization.

“While our team at Lower Keys Medical Center cared for patients with COVID-19, we continued to provide emergency and routine care and treatment for patients with a variety of conditions,” said David Clay, chief executive officer for Lower Keys Medical Center. “I am so honored to work with this resilient and committed family of clinicians and caregivers who make a difference for so many patients each day.”

Employees and medical staff brought their skills and compassion to support more than 23,000 emergency department visits, more than 3,000 inpatients and perform more than 3,000 surgeries. Over 99,000 patients received care across the hospital’s imaging centers, laboratory, physical, occupational and speech therapy clinics and the Keys Medical Group physician clinics. The hospital also delivered joy to local families as more than 400 babies were born.

Lower Keys Medical Center continues to grow and evolve as resources are directed toward increased medical services, facility improvements and technologies that are important to patients. These include the addition of four new Keys Medical Group providers in orthopedics, obstetrics and psychiatry, implementation of a cardiac catheterization call team, upgraded robotic surgery equipment, purchase of a cardiac MRI, replacement of flooring throughout the main campus, and the start of patient room renovations.

As Lower Keys Medical Center works to meet patients’ needs, it also gives back to the Lower Keys region. The hospital provided over $21 million in charity and uncompensated care for the community’s most vulnerable. And the $3 million paid in property, sales and GRT taxes helps support civic resources and services.

Lower Keys Medical Center also works with local charitable and community organizations such as Boys and Girls Club of the Keys, Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Keys, and the Key West Police Love Fund, which received donations in honor of the medical staff on Doctors’ Day last year.

The hospital’s payroll of more than $47.9 million ripples across the local economy as employees buy goods and services.

The hospital also made capital improvements totaling more than $2.4 million.

“We are part of this community and are committed to doing all we can to provide quality health care services to help our residents live healthier lives,” Clay added.

Working with the College of the Florida Keys, Lower Keys Medical Center is helping to develop the next generation of clinicians.

A new scholarship fund will also help local students discover their passion for health care.

rtist Jeff Sundheim had seen his large, arcing sundial sculpture called “Wave Henge” when it was installed in New York City’s Riverside Park. He had not seen its permanent installation at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park until last week, and he was thrilled.

The sculpture, which Sundheim created with Damon Hamm, acts as a sundial and was installed in Key West in September 2020 as the southernmost stop on the Florida Keys Sculpture Trail. Four times a year, the Wave Henge shadow will fall on one of the included benches, during the winter and summer solstice and the spring and fall equinox.

Local arts patron and philanthropist John Padget and his late partner Jacob Dekker gave the dozen sculptures to form the trail to the Florida Keys.

The sculptures were created by artists participating in the prestigious Art Students League of New York’s “Model to Monument” program.

The works’ relocation and placement in the Keys is a collaborative effort involving the Florida Keys Council of the Arts and the Monroe County Art in Public Places Committee.

The sculpture trail stretches from MM 81 in Islamorada to the Truman Waterfront Park.

Padget last week hosted a dinner for Sundheim at Salute on the Beach with the Florida Keys Arts Council director Liz Young, council president and schools superintendent Theresa Axford, as well as Tricia Eables of the Monroe County Art in Public Places committee and the Keys Weekly.

While in town from New York, Sundheim also met with about 50 local high school students from Somerset Island Prep charter high school.

The students and Sundheim met at the sculpture in the park for a discussion, Q&A and photos of the sculpture.

ATTACK ON INDIAN KEY HOW IT ALL STARTED ON AUG. 7, 1840

Editor’s Note: This is the first in a four-part series on Indian Key.

Unable to sleep, he rose from his bed and stepped outside in hopes of finding cool relief. Standing on the coral dust pathway, he listened as the wind rustled through buttonwood leaves and over coconut fronds. Glass took a deep breath and filled his lungs with the night air. He stretched his arms over his head as if reaching for the stars.

Taking in another deep breath, Glass began to look around.

His eyes adjusted to the moonlight; trees began to define themselves. A rat scurried across the path and up the trunk of a buttonwood tree – its long branches stretched out over the water.

Glass looked at the tree. Something was out of the ordinary, something out of place caught in the corner of his eye.

It took a second and then another second for what he was seeing to register as the dark outlines of canoes pulled up onto the island’s limestone edge came into focus. They were Indian canoes. His heart thundered as he pointed his finger and counted – one, two, three, eight, 10, 12. The carpenter quickly turned and walked to the cottage next door, where he rapped gently on the door with a single, soft knuckle. Pushing the door open, it slowly creaked. “Beiglett,” he whispered. “Beiglett, wake up.”

“How many times do I have to…”

“Quiet, quiet. There’s Indians out there.”

Beiglett spoke quietly. “What are you saying?’

“Get your shotgun. We need to go warn the captain.”

Captain Housman lived in a two-story house facing east out over the water. To reach him, the two men would have to cross the town square in the middle of the island. Glass and Beiglett left the cottage but stayed close to its side as they worked their way cautiously toward the back of the house. With their backs against the wooden planks, they could make out the picket fence and the town square ahead. Beyond the square, Captain Housman’s house was off to the left on the other side of the island, and the warehouses stood to the right.

Beiglett gripped his shotgun in his hands as the two men crept toward the picket fence. Hidden within the mix of light and shadow, the two men did not see the Indians. When they stumbled upon them, the melee began. One of the Indians raised his rifle and aimed it, but when he squeezed his finger against the trigger, the gun flashed but failed to burn enough to fire its ball.

In what must have been a mutual reaction, Beiglett raised the muzzle of his shotgun and screamed as he pulled the trigger and fired in the direction of the Indians.

Hearing Beiglett’s yell and thinking he had been shot, Glass ran off just as fast as possible. Unscathed, Beiglett ran, too.

Initially, he ran across the town square and past the warehouse until he reached the pier at the island’s edge. He stooped down, crawled underneath, and hid. He was not the only one. A boy had been sleeping on the warehouse piazza. He was startled awake by the gunfire, if not the shrieks, and ran away from the warehouse to hide underneath the pier, too. Soon after, a third man crawled underneath to join them.

The three of them huddled together, hiding beneath the narrow space separating the island from the deck of the wharf as the Indians began to ravage the island. Someone among them decided that it might be safer to abandon the wharf and run for the warehouses. Beneath the first floor of the second warehouse was a large cistern carved into the limestone by a mason.

They crawled out from under the wharf and, one-by-one, stole across the path and up to the warehouse where a trap door led to the cistern. The two men and the boy slipped through the trap door and into the dark cistern’s chest-deep water. The door was lowered behind them.

As the sun began to rise, light slipped between the cracks of the building. Curious about what was transpiring around them, Beiglett crept out of the cistern, into the warehouse, up the stairs, and into the cupola. From the third-story vantage point, he could see across the island. The Indians were everywhere.

ov. Ron DeSantis recently signed two Monroe County-related bills into law, a vessel anchoring bill and a land authority bill.

Monroe County worked with state Rep. Jim Mooney and state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez to tackle derelict vessels in Florida Keys waters. Last session, the legislature passed a bill enacting new 90-day anchoring limits in the waters of the Florida Keys, including implementing 300 new moorings. The county worked this session to modify that requirement. This year’s Senate Bill 1432 lowers the required new moorings to 100 and applies the new anchoring limits only to stored vessels, and will not apply to liveaboard vessels until the new required moorings are placed.

“We are pleased the governor signed this bill and are proud the county led this effort thanks to the help of Rep. Mooney and Sen. Rodriguez,” said Monroe County Mayor Pro Tem Craig Cates, who helped lead the local efforts. “This bill will lead to safer and cleaner waters around the Florida Keys, which is the core of our community in so many ways.”

Monroe County also led the successful passage of

Senate Bill 442, allowing the Monroe County Land Authority to assist the board of county commissioners in enhancing the resilience and mitigation of residential properties. The bill enables the land authority to assist private property owners in grant applications to mitigate flood impacts, such as elevating homes, demolishing older homes below minimum flood elevation and rebuilding the home, or buying out properties in low-lying areas from willing sellers. This is in addition to the public lands the Land Authority purchases and manages. The bill adds to Monroe County’s comprehensive efforts to increase overall resilience in the Florida Keys by complimenting the County’s efforts to rebuild infrastructure like roads, drainage, and other vital public facilities.

“We are excited to see the governor’s signature on this bill. The passing of this bill adds another tool to our toolbox to make the Florida Keys more resilient to climate change,” said Monroe County Mayor David Rice, who is also the chairman of the land authority board.

What should the Florida state bird be?

The roseate spoonbill, Florida’s other pink bird, also would be a great candidate. There is a decent population of them in Florida, and who doesn’t love a spoonbill? I mean, there are people put off by the fact that its beak is shaped like an implement designed to eat cereal or soup, and the species does occur in the four other Gulf Coast states, but other than that it’s a great candidate. And no one else has chosen it as a state bird.

There is a strong case to be made that a state bird should be one you can’t see anywhere else.

And here in Florida, we currently only have one recognized endemic species – the Florida scrub-jay. Scrub-jays are friendly, curious birds, not particularly afraid of humans – they will sometimes land on your head for fun – and not inclined to wander more than a few miles away from where they were hatched.

Their name comes from their extremely limited habitat – sandy xeromorphic shrub communities dominated by several species of diminutive oak trees, a.k.a. scrub habitat. But the chamber of commerce types, they don’t want no scrubs. Scrub jays are birds that can’t get no love from the legislature. It’s the name, which they think is unattractive. (As if a bird named for teasing and laughing at people in a scornful way is somehow better.)

Also, there is the fact that the species is threatened, largely because most of their habitat has been converted into orange groves or housing tracts, which highlights Florida’s less-than-great record of protecting its wildlife.

I am far from the only person who thinks the northern mockingbird is not really well suited to the state bird role. And there have been efforts to change it.

In 1999 10,000 school children signed a petition asking that the Florida state bird be changed to the Florida scrub-jay. And an attempt to change it was made in the legislature, but the bill failed, largely due to the efforts of highly powerful National Rifle Association lobbyist Marion Hammer, who believed that since scrub-jays would occasionally take a peanut from someone’s hand, they were lazy and suffered from a “welfare mentality.” (I am not making that up.)

In 2009 the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission surveyed 77,000 school kids and asked them what they thought the state bird should be. The clear winner was the osprey, with 20,000 votes. Efforts were made in the 2009 and 2010 to change the state bird to the osprey in the legislature, but both efforts failed, largely due to the efforts of Hammer.

In 2021 two bills were proposed – one to rescind the northern mockingbird’s state bird status, and one to name the Florida scrubjay to the role. Both were proposed, indefinitely postponed, then died in committee. Hammer again led the charge.

I guess Florida scrub-jay would be my choice. But I’d be good with osprey or roseate spoonbill. Anything but the deeply uninspired choice of northern mockingbird. Not that I expect the folks in Tallahassee to embrace the will of the people over the influence of lobbyists any time soon.

Do birds see me when I wave to them?

– The Aptly Named Joy I mean, probably. Depends on the species. Hawks, definitely.

From very far away. They could read your text messages from across a parking lot if they could read. So they would definitely see you wave. Songbirds like warblers and such could also see you, but you’d probably have to be closer. Sometimes I’ll be sitting very still on the back porch and a dove will come into the feeder and I’ll watch them for a while, then I’ll scratch my nose or something without thinking about it and the dove will take off in a panic. So doves would definitely see you wave.

The question is, what does a person waving, presumably from a non-threatening distance, mean to a bird? (This is one of the many questions that will probably never be answered by science because of the stingy incuriosity of the people who dole out research grants.) To us a wave is a gesture of goodwill, of acknowledging the presence of others, of saying a low-key hello. But to them? How would they sort the meaning of that from all the other crazy things we do?

Or, maybe they do understand what it means, and they’re like me, and can never remember anyone’s name, at least not right off the bat. And they kind of feel like jerks about it, so they maybe sometimes pretend they didn’t see the wave just so they could avoid an awkward situation. Or maybe they just haven’t figured out they should wave back.

Either way, I think you should keep waving. There’s nothing wrong with waving (again, from a safe distance). The world could use a lot more people inclined to give a friendly wave.

ampaign season officially began on April 28 for County Commissioner Michelle Coldiron, who hosted a kickoff party that drew dozens of supporters to Boondocks Grille and Drafthouse. Coldiron is the incumbent and is so far the only candidate for the District 2 seat, which covers from Boca Chica Key through the 7 Mile Bridge, plus the north side of U.S. 1 up to 63rd Court in Marathon.

“I certainly appreciated seeing everyone at my campaign kickoff and sharing my vision and goals for Monroe County,” said Coldiron. “I look forward to continuing to serve all the residents of the Keys for another four years.”

For the first time ever, a former student of Literacy Volunteers of America in Monroe County has become the local organization’s president.

Viktor Slavov, who used LVA’s tutoring services to become proficient in English, recently acquired the presidential gavel from longtime president and LVA supporter Judge Peary Fowler.

“We’ve never had one of our clients rise to such a position and he is a really interesting, funny guy,” said LVA executive director Mary Casanova.

In the Florida Keys, LVA has three sites to cover the Lower, Middle and Upper Keys, with its main office in Key West, 2405 N. Roosevelt Blvd.

“There are LVA tutors and students everywhere in between: Islamorada, Big Pine, Cudjoe and more. Last year, 114 volunteer tutors assisted 326 students countywide, helping them achieve personal goals through increased literacy skills. We believe the ability to read, write and communicate in English is critical to personal freedom,” the organization’s website states.

Literacy Volunteers of America began in Monroe County in 1984 under the auspices of Friends of the Library. Since then, LVA Monroe has helped more than 5,897

students obtain personal goals through increased literacy skills.

LVA offers free, confidential, one-on-one and small group literacy training by a trained LVA volunteer. Services are available to Monroe County residents who desire to improve reading, writing and English communication skills.

Its core programs are basic reading and English as a Second Language.

Volunteer tutors are always needed, and there is no need to speak another language. Volunteers receive official training from LVA. “If you can read and write and can spare two hours a week, you can be a tutor,” Casanova said.

ne hour a week makes a huge difference, and volunteers are always welcome every Friday morning, when teams clean up a designated area of the island.

A yellow garbage can has been designated for cigarette butt recycling in the parking lot behind Key West City Hall. Commissioner Greg Davila demonstrates the dropoff spot that enables the city of Key West to recycle cigarette butts through a company called TerraCycle, which recycles the butts into raw materials used in plastics such as outdoor furniture, plastic shipping pallets, storage containers and other items. Nine volunteers collected 27.5 pounds of trash, four pounds of recycling, and 1.5 gallons of cigarette butts in one hour.

It is not just the large items you can see easily when you are walking, but the smaller items such as bottle caps and cigarette butts that are collected by the volunteers that make the biggest difference and keep them out of the ocean.

Remember, every day is Earth Day, so please do your part to help keep our island clean.

The ploggers are always looking for volunteers every Friday morning.

All are invited to join the Friday morning cleanups from 8 to 9 a.m. Parking is provided and all volunteers receive a 24hour bus pass in exchange for their time.
