FIRE CLOSES SOUTHBOUND SIDE OF STRETCH JIM McCARTHY

brush fire sparked by a vehicle that went up in a blaze on the 18-Mile Stretch on April 26 was about 20% contained by midday April 27. Roughly 150 acres of land burned in the area not far from MM 125 where a small truck caught fire, causing dry grass to spread flames to the west. The Florida Forest Service said on April 27 that ranger crews and a patrol pilot were checking the fire’s status. The southbound lane, closed after the truck caught fire at 4:30 p.m. on April 26, opened some six hours later. David Rosenbaum, public information officer with the Florida Forest Service’s Everglades division, said they received a call of a fire involving a twodoor truck. According to initial reports, smoke came from air-conditioning vents. Flames engulfed the truck not long after the driver pulled off the highway. The Florida Forest Service, Florida Highway Patrol and MetroDade Fire Rescue responded to the scene. “Burning items coming off the truck were dropped onto dry grass, and the winds were out of the east at 10 to 12 mph,” Rosenbaum said. “Once

the grass ignited, the wind pushed it to the fence area where there’s mostly grass on the shoulder.” By 5 p.m., southbound and northbound lanes remained shut down between Florida City and Key Largo as fire trucks and other equipment arrived at the scene. Motorists were diverted to Card Sound Road throughout the evening. A $1.60 toll on Card Sound Road was lifted during that time. The northbound lane eventually reopened after 6 p.m. What began as a 30-acre fire at 5 p.m. rapidly grew to 50 acres and eventually 150 acres as the evening went on. A Metro-Dade helicopter dropped buckets of water onto it, but the blaze continued to spread as the easterly winds kept blowing smoke to the west of U.S. 1. “The smoke west of both highways was blowing away from the road. It was never an issue and never obstructed visibility,” Rosenbaum said. “The southbound lane was closed because we needed the road to park equipment.” The highway’s southbound lane reopened to traffic around 10 p.m. on April 26. Overall, Rosenbaum said smoke in the vicinity of U.S. 1 can create a visibility hazard. And that can lead to a complete shutdown of the 18-Mile Stretch between Florida City and Key Largo. “We have to advise motorists that’s a possibility, especially at night,” he said. “Smoke can settle on the road at night. The road also isn’t lit that well.” No injuries were reported in the fire.

CROOKED PALM DISTILLERY COMING TO PLANTATION KEY Alcohol permit approved but not without resident concerns JIM McCARTHY jim@keysweekly.com

A

permit allowing the sale of alcohol for a new distillery on Plantation Key garnered approval via a 4-1 vote during an Islamorada Village Council meeting on April 21. Inside Founders Park Community Center, a sea of supporters packed the gallery with stickers reading “We Support Crooked Palm Distillery.” A brewery, distillery and tasting room run by Islamorada Brewery & Distillery will occupy bottom floor space at the former BB&T building at MM 90.1, bayside. The request for a permit, however, didn’t go without some concerns from residents on Gardenia Street who live close to the new distillery and Plantation Key Colony. Hank Flores, senior planner, briefed council on the permit request for on-premise consumption of alcohol in an area that contains a mix of homes and commercial buildings. The site of the new distillery isn’t far from the new 7/11 that’s open 24 hours. The Payfair grocery store, which sells alcohol, and Capt. Craig’s, which serves beer, are also close. Also close are homes on Gardenia Street. Several residents in that neighborhood took a moment to convey their concerns to the dais. One of them was Gardenia Street resident

“What we want to do is do something specific to the fact that this area is a residential area, We want to be somewhere that the families of this community will want to come and hang out. We want to provide a different space from what we already have in that area, another option that’s not a dive bar or restaurant, that’s a place to relax.”

— Larisa Baste

Angie Isalgue. She told the dais she works from home and witnesses the activity on Palm Avenue and Gardenia throughout the day, including many children stopping at the new 7/11 for a pizza or Slurpee. During weekends, she said, the area sees more pedestrian traffic during times when one would expect a brewery packed with adults consuming alcohol. With only a few Freebee vehicles in the village, Isalgue said it could mean more adults consuming alcohol and driving under the influence. “I want you to think of these children and the future children of Plantation Key Colony when considering this license to consume liquor in a pedestrian-heavy area,” she said. “Rejecting this request for the license would protect the children of Plantation Key and surrounding areas.” The new distillery is across the street from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tavernier — a staff analysis states a distance of 149 feet from the proposed use. Per code, no production, manufacture, brewing or sale of alcoholic beverages can take place within 300 feet of the church. Chris Trentine, co-owner of Islamorada Brewery & Distillery, visited the church to speak to its council regarding the plans for a distillery. With questions answered, the church wrote a letter to the village stating it wouldn’t contest the permit. “We appreciate his ‘good neighbor attitude’ in requesting a meeting with our council to address any concerns our congregation may have with his proposal and potential liquor license,” the letter reads. Larisa Baste, manager of Islamorada Brewery & Distillery at MM 82, said misconceptions are floating around over what’s proposed for the distillery. Baste said it won’t emulate the location to the south. Baste said it’s not about slamming shots, but more finding something new. “What we want to do is do something specific to the fact that this area is a residential area,” she said. “We want to be somewhere that the families of this community will want to come and hang out. We want to provide a different space from what we already have in that area, another option that’s not a dive bar or restaurant that’s a place to relax.” Jose Herrera, co-owner of Islamorada Brewery & Distillery, said they’re

already approved for a brewery. Speaking to concerned residents, Herrera said residents should expect the employees to be the “most amazing human beings.” “We have Ivy League graduates. We have master’s degrees,” he said. “We have all of these amazing men and women working for us who have grown us from zero sales. The people

who work for IBC down south will do anything and everything for Islamorada.” Councilman David Webb was the lone vote against the permit. He said the council must re-evaluate how to manage the impact of commercial areas abutting residential communities. Webb said the applicant filled all conditional squares to get the liquor license, but he took issue with a deficient noise ordinance that doesn’t address differences between “Holiday Isle Tiki Bar on the edge of the ocean and an operation right across the street from a residential neighborhood.” “I think there’s room for us to reach out to the petitioner and find some more cooperation and some more commitments,” he said. “I speak in opposition tonight under conditions presented, but encourage us to move forward to find compromise.” Webb recommended there should be a certain time that ends the loud music to give neighborhood residents peace and quiet. In response, Village Planning Director Dan Gulizio said the applicant is willing to come up with acceptable hours of operation for live music. “I’m confident we can finalize that one condition if it’s in the council’s purview to give us that discretion,” Gulizio said. The distillery would operate from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In his remarks to council, Trentine said he tried to put in seven units of housing on the building’s first floor. That wasn’t allowed, however. With seven housing units on the second floor, Trentine said he’s purchasing the building to give his employees a place to live. As to the loud music concerns, Trentine reiterated that there won’t be a DJ at 11 o'clock at night. “That’s not what we do,” he said.

SCHOOL BOARD DISCUSSES HOUSING, STRATEGIC PLAN

HIALEAH MAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED INVOLVEMENT IN HIT-AND-RUN

ebate over a redevelopment proposal for district property in Key West, as well as updates on strategic planning and standards-based grading, consumed the majority of the April 26 meeting of the Monroe County School Board. The meeting’s early workshop session saw discussion of an unsolicited proposal by SPGL LLC – the same company responsible for 42 affordable housing units available to the Monroe County Sheriff on Stock Island and in Key West – for the development of the school district’s 5.9-acre administrative headquarters on Trumbo Road in Key West and the adjacent Housing Authority parcel at 240 White St. The proposal includes 76 rental apartments, a new two-story, 20,000-square-foot administrative building, and 1.27 acres of green space. Under the initial proposal, SPGL would exclusively design, build, finance and maintain the project under a long-term ground lease. While school board chair John Dick and vice chair Andy Griffiths ultimately supported moving forward with initial stages of the proposal process, Griffiths and board members Bobby Highsmith and Sue Woltanski suggested a direct meeting with the district’s long-standing housing task force, a clear plan for vacating the district’s current facilities on the property, and input from other proposals before taking significant steps with SPGL’s plan. “We’ve had a committee running for years now about how we’re going to redevelop, what our needs are, what needs to be going there, and we haven’t had any real feedback or a workshop with that committee,” said Highsmith. “The folks that have spent so much time and energy working on this committee, we owe it to them to hear what they have to say about this and the overall project development.” “I’d like to know where our administration is going to go and how we’re going to pay for that before we move forward,” said Woltanski. “I don’t feel like I know the long game of how the pieces are going to fit together financially.” Superintendent Theresa Axford spoke in favor of moving forward with the proposal process, adding that she had met with the task force the

day before to discuss SPGL’s plan. “I think what the task force wants more than anything is to put one foot in front of the other, looking at what comes before us and making decisions as we go along,” she said. “They were totally supportive of this conversation with you today. … The task force does feel a sense of urgency about moving forward with this.” With a split opinion, the board voted to postpone formal consideration of SPGL’s proposal until after an upcoming meeting with the housing task force. IN OTHER NEWS • The meeting later shifted to a strategic plan update delivered by consultant Elisa Levy. Following concerns from parents that the plan’s development had not allowed room for parental input, Levy cited extensive efforts to involve parents in the data-gathering and input stages. Various avenues of input included, but were not limited to: surveys from more than 1,200 parents and teachers; more than 70 focus groups with teachers, staff and district administration; a total of five live and virtual town hall meetings with parents; and two focus groups with Spanish- and Creole-speaking families. Levy outlined a plan to accelerate learning for students by focusing on increasing reading proficiency in the third grade, increasing the percentage of students making gains in their English and language arts performance between 3rd and 10th grade, and increasing the high school acceleration rate. The plan also details efforts to foster student creativity, self-knowledge, and social and emotional intelligence through partnerships with art, theater, cultural and environmental organizations, as well as specialized curriculum to promote relationship building with teachers and peers. Parents wishing to provide further input on the strategic plan will be afforded an opportunity to do so at the school board’s May 10 meeting at For more visit keysweeklycom

Hialeah man was arrested by Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation for his involvement in a reported hit-and-run boating accident at Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada on April 24. FWC said Officer Daniel Marshal received a call from dispatch regarding a hit-and-run boating accident. The witness, identified as the victim, managed to get the registration numbers from the fleeing vessel along with some cell phone video. After conducting the boating accident investigation at Robbie’s Marina, Marshal searched the area oceanside between Bud N’ Mary’s Marina and Tavernier Creek. Marshal ended his water patrol without finding the striking vessel. On his way home at the end of his shift, FWC said Marshal stopped to help the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office with a vehicle accident at MM 93 in the northbound lane. While on scene with the traffic accident, Marshal saw a vessel on a trailer heading north matching the description of the striking vessel he had been looking for earlier that day. Marshal followed the vessel in tow and found the vessel to have a faulty brake light. After running the trailer registration, Marshal found that the trailer tag was also expired. Marshal conducted a vehicle stop at MM 99 and approached the vehicle to tell the driver why he stopped him. FWC said Marshal noticed damage to the vessel consistent with the accident at Robbie’s Marina. The driver, identified as Ivan Alvarez Cachan, 38, of Hialeah, was arrested and taken to the Plantation Key Jail. — Weekly staff

SERVING STUDENTS LOCAL AUTISM NONPROFIT FINDS A FITTING SPACE AT NEW SCHOOL JIM McCARTHY

A

utism Society of the Keys (ASK) founder Jill Campbell gazed at her new, spacious office located at the new Carrie Brazer Center for Autism in Tavernier. The journey began some 12 years ago at Campbell’s home as she began to meet with parents in search of answers and assistance regarding autism. The guidance Campbell offers to local families has grown so much that it drew her to find a larger spot in the Upper Keys to carry out critical work in getting the necessary resources into families’ hands. “It’s fitting to be in a school like this,” Campbell said. “It just made sense to have us under the same roof.” A nonprofit, ASK aims to help families affected by autism — one of the great health epidemics in the world today with roughly 136 new diagnoses each day. With parents knowing little about autism, Campbell said ASK’s goals are providing answers and educating parents on what steps they need to take. Campbell said her new office opens opportunities for meetings to educate parents and bring families together for some fun events. She hopes to emulate what she’s done in the Lower Keys out of the Basilica School of St. Mary Star of the Sea. “The school was supportive and allowed us to use their library to accommodate a craft event or a speaker. With this partnership in the Upper Keys, we’ll be able to do more,” she said.

Campbell said 1 in 10,000 children was diagnosed with autism in the 1980s. Today, 1 in 44 children has autism. If the rate continues, she said, 80% of boys could have autism by 2032. And boys are five times more likely to have autism compared to girls. At 2 1/2 years old, Campbell’s son, Craig, was diagnosed with autism. She knew very little about autism at that time. She also didn’t know how much it’d consume her everyday life. The support that Campbell and her family found among those with shared experiences, however, prompted them to form ASK as a local resource, sounding board and community education program. Craig received the therapy needed to help grow his daily life skills. Today, he drives a car, is in typical high school classes and speaks as much as anyone. Campbell said a small classroom atmosphere, such as the one Craig was in during his days at Island Christian School,

Students at the Carrie Brazer Center for Autism receive one-on-one care.

aided his progress. At the Carrie Brazer Center for Autism in Tavernier, located in the former Ocean Studies Charter School, students are receiving one-on-one attention and support. Opening a year ago, the school currently has 10 students. Carrie Brazer is a Florida-certified special education teacher who founded the Carrie Brazer Center for Autism in 1999. With a master’s degree in varying exceptionalities, Brazer’s school in Miami has served students for 22 years. With a new location in Tavernier, she said, parents can send their children to obtain the help they need locally. Brazer said the school’s individualized curriculum allows students to engage with what they’re learning through touch. “Everything that’s going on in the curriculum, they can move around on the iPad,” she said. “It follows Sunshine State Standards in Florida and modifies at their pace.” Brazer said the school accepts the Gardiner Scholarship, which provides thousands of dollars in assistance based on where children are on the spectrum. She said the school also accepts all insurance so children can receive behavior therapy, which allows students to work closely with behavioral assistants during or after school in order to reduce behavior problems and increase daily life skills. In addition, Brazer said they’re looking to open a classroom in the fall for neurotypical children. Brazer said the Gardiner scholarship gives a sibling a free scholarship to attend the school. “If there’s a neurotypical child and an autistic child, they can both come to school under the same scholarship so parents don’t have to travel to two schools,” she said. Families are invited to an open house on Saturday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to tour the school and partake in various activities. Parents will be able to walk through classrooms and meet staff while kids can enjoy hot dogs and some face painting. Beware of Computer scam The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was recently notified of a scam in which a resident lost $35,000 after allowing an unknown caller access to his computer. The scammer claimed he worked for a computer company sponsored by Best Buy. He stated the company accidentally sent the victim $10,000. The victim then gave the scammer access to his computer to the point the scammer was able to remotely control the victim’s mouse. The scammer then accessed the victim’s bank account and showed him an alleged transaction for $10,000. The scammer instructed the victim to drive to a

gas station and deposit $10,000 into a Bitcoin ATM using an address given by the scammer. The scammer called the victim the next day and told him to do this again. The victim then noticed the scammer removed another $15,000 from his bank account. Scammers often represent themselves as experts within the company they claim to be representing. General scam tips and reminders: • Never give access to your computer without first checking with the reported agency. • Never provide financial information to strangers over the phone. • Never pay for money demands from unknown callers over the phone with gift cards. This is a sure sign you are getting scammed. Residents should never give personal, monetary or gift card information to anyone over the phone, in a text, or an email — to anyone regardless of who they claim to be — without first checking with that person, utility, business or government agency. Anyone with information about any crimes should contact the sheriff's office at 305-292-7000. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-471-8477. If a tip leads to an arrest in the case, the caller may be eligible for a cash reward. Tips can also be submitted via social media such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using the @CrimeStoppers305 hashtag. Florida gas prices gradually decline Florida gas prices are gradually moving lower after rising 10 cents last week. Florida's state average rose from $4.01 to $4.11 per gallon. Drivers are now paying an average price of $4.10 per gallon. "The rollercoaster ride at the pump continues," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "After rising two weeks ago, gas prices should remain tied to the price of oil, which was on its way back down last week. Based on wholesale and gasoline futures trends, gas prices could decline 5-10 cents, unless oil prices rebound again." According to the EIA, the price of crude oil accounts for 55% of the price of gasoline. Last week, the U.S. price of oil fell 4 percent. Friday's closing price of $102.07 per barrel was $4.47 less than the week before, and $21.63 per barrel less than this year's high - set in early March.

WOMAN CHARGED FOR ALLEGEDLY POCKETING 60K FROM BUSINESS Evidence finds more wrongdoing from a previous arrest

Misglenia Guerra

A

42-year-old Homestead woman was arrested on April 20 for allegedly stealing nearly $60,000 from a Key Largo RV park. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Misglenia Guerra, 42, of Homestead, was charged with larceny and fraud. Guerra was previously arrested in November 2021 on fraud, grand theft and multiple counts of uttering a forged instrument from the same business — the Calusa Campground Resort & Marina, located at 325 Calusa St., Key Largo. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Guerra, a former bookkeeper at the campground, stole $13,277 by writing fraudulent checks on behalf of the campground to a cleaning business she owned in that previous case. Campground managers contacted Detective Ian Barnett following that arrest with more allegations of wrongdoing. Barnett reported finding that Guerra conducted numerous force credits over the course of several years totaling $59,774, transferring the money to several credit accounts she opened at multiple banks. A force credit, sometimes referred to as a force refund, allows one to process refunds without an offsetting sale. For instance, a customer could enter a store with an item they wish to return, but they shut down the card account they used to pay for the item. The business could provide them with a force credit, which credits the money to a different card account they have. Guerra was booked into jail on the morning of April 20. An arraignment hearing is set for May 10. — Weekly staff report

VOLLEYBALL STAR INKS SCHOLARSHIP WITH LAKESUMTER STATE COLLEGE

C

oral Shores volleyball standout Kate Johnson recently accepted an athletic scholarship to continue her playing career at Lake-Sumter State College in Leesburg. A two-time All-Monroe County player, Johnson helped the ’Canes to a district championship this past season. She chose Lake-Sumter over several other interested schools. “I picked Lake-Sumter because it checked off everything on my list,” Johnson said. “When I went up there for my visit everything just clicked, and I knew then this is where I am going. I hope to graduate and play another two years.” Johnson said she will study early education, with the goal to make a difference in kids’ lives. “Through the process of trial and error I figured out I wanted to pursue a career in teaching kindergarten,” she said. She credits many people for her success throughout her high school volleyball career that began her freshman year. She’s especially grateful to coaches Autumn Hager and Erin

Kirkland for giving her a chance to play. “After my first season of volleyball, I was hooked,” she said. “My mom sent me to volleyball camps over the summer, and I tried to take everything I learned and apply it to tryouts my sophomore year. I made varsity, and I was the starting middle blocker for my team. I still had a lot to learn. Later that year I started to play for Miami Elite volleyball club. I made new friends and learned many new skills as well as life lessons.” Head varsity coach Kathy EtsHokin described Johnson as a powerful player at the net. She said Johnson’s years of dedication, determination and hard work paid off.

MUSIC TO THEIR EARS The members of Dolphin Research Center’s animal family are no strangers to music throughout the course of their days. Even still, a 10-piece live band is an unusual treat. On April 13, the dolphins, sea lions and birds were treated to a performance by Tavernier-based Ukulele Joy. Led by Susan Anderson, the group aims to spread an appreciation for ukulele music throughout the Keys. With an attentive cetacean audience, the 10 musicians performed songs including “DayO,” “What Do You Do with a Drunken Sailor,” and “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing,” before moving on to DRC’s aviary, where the facility’s parrots were more than happy to pair the beat of the music with their own dance moves. COLE GRIFFITH/Dolphin Research Center.

“She has continued to train offseason and played club for Miami Elite. Kate was a very instrumental player for our team. She was a captain, leader and team player,” Ets-Hokin said. “Kate has grown so much over the years and will continue to grow more in college. I am beyond happy for her and proud. Kate will be a great asset to Lake Sumter’s team.” Kate’s mom, Debbie, was a college student-athlete. She said she always hoped that her kids would follow her footsteps. “She is a true success story of going from knowing nothing about the sport her freshman year to being a college student-athlete by her senior year,” Debbi said. “Kate is a true leader and an example of how hard work pays off in the long run, and I couldn’t be more proud.” Rich Russell, Coral Shores athletic director, said there were moments late in the season when Johnson would take over games with her power, finesse and improved court vision. “It’s really been fun watching Kate mature; she has made amazing progress as a person and as a player during her tenure at Coral Shores,” Russell said. “I salute Coach Ets-Hokin and her entire staff for their efforts. Most importantly, I salute Kate for the model she provided for other studentathletes. She’s a testament to the value of hard work, commitment, and goal setting.” — Weekly staff

The Keys Weekly is proud to introduce local students to the Kids Weekly feature. Instead of asking about their favorite teacher or school subject, we want to know what superpower they’d most like to have, their favorite YouTube channel and the hardest part about being a kid today. We thank our future leaders and Plantation Key School for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Panthers” pride and for giving us a glimpse into their world. Phoebe Miller School: Plantation Key School Grade: First Activities: Recess. What superpower would you most like to have, and why? Invisible power. If you could make a rule for the whole world to follow, what would it be? To be nice. What makes you laugh? Funny stuff. When do you think a kid is old enough to have a cell phone? 21. What’s your favorite YouTube Channel? Ben Asler. The hardest part about being a kid is … tests. The hardest part about being an adult must be … parenting. When I grow up, I want to … be an artist.

OLDEST WATER HOLE IN THE KEYS? Caribbean Club’s story goes back to 1930s

T Caribbean Club. JERRY WILKINSON COLLECTION/Contributed

here is a bar on Islamorada’s Windley Key with a sign declaring “the oldest most established liquor license in the Keys.” Without even considering some of the older watering holes in Key West, Key Largo’s Caribbean Club could challenge the claim. According to the Key West Citizen, Tom Hanley applied for a liquor license for Rock Harbor’s Caribbean Club in 1935. It is an odd year, a premature year, as the construction of the legendary club did not begin until 1938. More generally associated with mainland developments like Miami Beach, Carl Fisher developed the property. However, broke and in poor health, he began developing the last project of his career, a private yacht club established on some property he owned on Key Largo. On July 12, 1938, Fisher was issued a “war department permit” authorizing him to build the following: a bulkhead, wharf, swimming enclosure and an aquarium. A clubhouse for the yacht club was also built, and, in a Miami News article dated Feb. 8, 1939, it was announced that Ray Harris would be the steward at “Fisher’s new fishing club down at Key Largo – the Caribbean club. It is still in the throes of being built but should soon be ready.” Harris previously worked at a private club Fisher developed in 1922 on Adams Key called the Cocolobo Club. Adams Key is one of the northern keys and is today encompassed by Biscayne National Park. In March 1939, Fisher filed a petition requesting permission to lengthen the club’s pier of “rock filled cribs of railroad ties” from 75 to 90 feet. Four months later, on July 15, 1939, Carl Fisher suffered a stomach hemorrhage and died in a hospital on Miami Beach, an island he began developing circa 1910. He was 65 years old. The Caribbean Club first opened its doors for business in January 1940, with Tom Hanley as the manager and Ray Harris working his culinary magic in the kitchen. Fisher did not own the club. It was deeded to the ownership of its esteemed directors: P.H. Arthur, Philo M. Gelatt, N. Vernon Hawthorne, John Oliver LaGorce, Daniel J. Mahoney, Hugh M. Matheson, William W. Muir, Thomas J. Pancoast, F. Lowrey Wall and C. W. Chase. P.H. Arthur was the club president, and Hugh M. Matheson the commodore.

The club sold in 1945 and, according to a deed made official by an indenture dated May 24, 1945, the deal was made between: “Caribbean Club (formerly named Key Largo Yacht & Fishing Club) a social club not for profit organized and existing under the laws of the State of Florida, party BRAD of the first part, and Right RevBERTELLI erend William Barry as Pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish, Miami Beach, is an author, Florida, party of the second part.” speaker, and FlorCarl Fisher donated five polo ida Keys historian. stables to William Barry and St. His latest book, Patrick’s in 1926, used for church “The Florida Keys Skunk Ape Files,” services and classrooms for its is a fun blend of school. Barry received the proptwo of his favorite erty with “all improvements in or subjects — Florida about said premises except for Keys history and the following articles of personal the Skunk Ape. property: The painting approximately eight feet in length and breadth, the stuffed fish head, the members flags, the elephant foot, and the bronze membership plate.” 1945 appeared to be a popular year for the club’s property transactions. In May 1945, it was reported that Fred Dion purchased the Caribbean Club for $25,000. In December, the club was advertised for sale in the classifieds, with Tom Hanley identified as the club’s operator. In most stories, Hanley is the owner, too. Hanley continued to develop the property and added a sixroom hotel wing. He also offered gambling during the winter tourist season – unless the police happened to be nosing around. The story everyone talks about is whether or not the Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall classic Key Largo was filmed at the Caribbean Club. According to stories written by the people involved with the movie or those writing about them, it was not. However, the Caribbean Club did play a significant role during pre-production. The film was adapted from the 1939 Maxwell Anderson play of the same name. John Huston, the director, liked the title but not the content, so he hired screenwriter Richard Brooks to rework the screenplay to better fit his vision. For inspiration, Huston brought Brooks to Key Largo, where the two men were guests of Mr. Hanley's at the Caribbean Club. Though the club was officially closed for the summer, Hanley brought in help to cook for them and keep their rooms clean. He also brought in gaming tables where Huston and Brooks spent time gambling. Before they left, Huston had allegedly lost about $25,000 playing craps and roulette, and Brooks gambled away around $6,000. On the day they left the club and drove home to the mainland, they spent a little more time at Hanley’s tables. While they gambled, a storm was building. By the time they left, both men had managed to win back a good chunk of their losses. Also, with the weather outside storming, parts of the road were underwater. Of course, the big winner was the Caribbean Club, which became world-famous and is an iconic Florida Keys roadside attraction, still.

new fundraising campaign organized by local Rotary clubs is using its connections to get supplies into the hands of Ukrainians severely affected by the ongoing war. Thanks to the work of Marathon Rotarian Keith Douglass and past Rotary District 6990 Governor Roy Gonas, a support line was formed between the Keys club, the Rotary Club of Lviv and clubs in neighboring countries. The two were able to connect with the Rotary Club of Lviv and its president, Natalia Dolinska. From there, Dolinska teamed up with clubs in nearby countries to set up a system where money could be sent to order and bring supplies into Ukraine. Now, the Upper Keys Rotary Club is jumping onboard. Donations collected will be sent to Rotary Clubs in Poland and Germany to purchase supplies for those in Ukraine. Rotarian Bette Brown said it serves a direct benefit to the people of Ukraine who remain in the country or fled to a safer place. “Instead of writing a check, we thought we would try to raise awareness,” Brown said. Rotarian John Gallant visited Ukraine roughly 10 years ago to help build a playground at an orphanage. Gallant remembers the cute, loving kids and the caring adults who took care of them. “The kids were well fed and cared for, but what was interesting about this orphanage was these kids went to school. They had college paid for and there was a plan in place to make those kids productive, full members of society,” he said. “It wasn’t just, ‘Oh, good luck.’ They actually cared.” Gallant notes that 100% of the donations collected will support Ukrainians who don’t have stores to get food and other necessities. Pulling out any kind of money in places like Lviv is a challenge now. And even if Ukrainians could pull out money, there’s no supply chain or stocked shelves in the area, Gallant said. “The neat thing about this is there is no overhead from Rotary,” he said. “We’re dealing with people on the ground who know what’s needed and how to deliver it. What we’re trying to do is produce immediate assistance at a scale needed right now.” And with supplies getting into the right hands, it’s much more than sending food and other items. Gallant said it’s a show of support to the people regardless of what they think about the war, politics and government. “This is about the five million people displaced from their country and the tens of millions who don’t have their needs met,” he said. “If you see a bombed building that has housing units, that’s hundreds of families with no place and no shelter of their own. They’re literally homeless.” Those wishing to support Ukrainians can visit www.keysrotary. world and click the “Donate now” button.

eneath the light of the full moon, magic sometimes happens. This is especially true on coral reefs, where, once a year, the lunar luminance causes corals to spawn. This is the basis of life in our Florida Keys ecosystem and an important, natural regeneration process. Now, the Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) and the Islamorada Resort Collection have launched a monthly Full Moon Yoga series to celebrate this special time of month. Part of the proceeds will benefit CRF’s coral restoration efforts in the Florida Keys. The hotel group includes Amara Cay, Pelican Cove, Postcard Inn and La Siesta Resort. “Coral Restoration Foundation is joining Amara Cay for their monthly yoga events to create connections with our community and encourage everyone to make a positive impact on the coral reef in a fun, relaxing, and empowering way,” said CRF’s Madalen Howard. “As coral scientists we think of the full moon, and we know it brings life, light and new beginnings to our oceans.” The yoga series kicked off with a celebration of the most recent full pink moon at Postcard Inn Beach Resort & Marina. Crystal Carnahan of Zenfully Aware, who led the flow, welcomed participants to inhale deeply and bloom into their fuller selves. Our bodies are 70% water, and the moon affects our cells in the same way it does the tides, she said. “With the full moon, we are able to let go of things that are holding us back,” she added. This leads to rebirth and new hope – a perfect backdrop upon which to think upon our coral reefs.

Sarah Crisafulli, complex director of marketing for the Islamorada Resort Collection, said, “At the Islamorada Resort Collection, we are passionate about creating meaningful events and activities for our guests and locals. … (W)e started thinking about ways we could take our existing beachside yoga classes and add another layer of meaning to the activity for our guests and locals.” Crisafulli and Carnahan reached out to CRF to learn about how the full moon affects coral spawning. Crisafulli said, “It was eye-opening for us and we realized it would be an impactful and educational yoga practice for our guests and locals.” Locals and resort guests can participate. The practice is complimentary for guests and $25 for locals. Zenfully Aware is donating 50% of proceeds to CRF. A limited number of yoga mats are available. After the practice, one of the participants said, “This is great. We can give nature a helping hand together.” For more information and to sign up for the next class, visit: https:// square.link/u/2r7bk5cq.

The generous $25,000 donation by WorldWide Sportsman to I.CARE will help bring local divers out for free to plant, monitor and maintain endangered corals. TIFFANY DUONG/ Keys Weekly

TIFFANY DUONG tiffany@keysweekly.com

“E

veryone here relies on coral reefs for jobs and tourism and all of it. We know it’s important.” This is what Scott Liebert, the general manager of Islamorada’s WorldWide Sportsman, told the Weekly about why his store is proud to be donating $25,000 to I.CARE. The latter is a local coral restoration non-profit focused specifically on rehabilitating Islamorada’s precious reefs. Coral reefs are the lifeblood of the Keys, supporting not just the natural ecosystems beneath the surface but also the local economy. Notably, I.CARE draws much of its funding from local businesses like WorldWide Sportsman that donate to the effort. The non-profit recruits much of its “workforce” from local divers who donate their time and energy to physically plant endangered corals on the reef. They take pride in being by locals, for locals, with locals. “The success of I.CARE’s mission is critical to our future and we applaud all who lend their voice and their support and practical assistance,” Liebert said. No reef, no fish. No fish, no economy, no communities that rely on this beautiful ecosystem, he added. “Without (the reef), we don’t have anything,” he said. The $25,000 check came from the Outdoor Fund set up by parent company Bass Pro. The fund grows when customers round up to the nearest dollar on their sales. The Bass Pro

corporate national office then matches those funds. How well a store does in terms of local round-up determines how much money they receive to donate back to their local community. “We are usually in the top 10,” Liebert beamed. “It’s truly locals donating to support local causes.” WorldWide Sportsman has previously donated to the Wild Bird Sanctuary, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, The Turtle Hospital in Marathon and more. “This is home grown,” emphasized Mike Goldberg, co-founder of I.CARE. He, along with co-founder, Kylie Smith and the entire I.CARE team, were all smiles and hugs as they received the bigger than life check from Liebert in front of the Islamorada store. “This is the best. We are so grateful for this,” Smith added. The donation will be used largely to train local divers in I.CARE’s monitoring, maintenance and planting techniques and to bring them diving for free. These dives will alternate among Key Dives, Islamorada Dive Center and Conch Republic Divers. They will take place every Friday and Saturday, and the third Sunday of each month. Because of Bass Pro/WorldWide Sportsman’s donation, the program will continue through April 2024. Goldberg concluded, “We can’t do this alone. We need everyone to care and do their part. Together, the impossible becomes one step closer to reality.” More information is at icareaboutcoral.org.

f there’s one thing people love, it’s a good food truck. The one in Key Largo called One Grind specializes mainly in breakfast, offering a variety of gourmet, hand-crafted coffees and teas plus burritos, tacos and bagel sandwiches. Located in the median at MM 98, near Ballyhoos, try a cappuccino, an iced hot chocolate, or a flat white. Espresso drinks are made from whole beans ground to order that are selected with deep, rich taste in mind. Then finish off with cheesy skillet fried potatoes or avocado toast. All drink orders can be customized and they also offer the flavorings that we all know and love, such as caramel and hazelnut. As if this all didn’t sound delicious enough, everything is fresh and made to order daily. That’s right, nothing is frozen. One Grind is yet another COVID-19 baby. The owners, Rosemary and Christine, are both local and retired. During the pandemic they took the opportunity to blend their passion for breakfast and coffee with helping animals in need. All of their tips go to the local humane society, and a portion of every sale of their “Rescue Collab Coffee,” called the Foxy Brown, goes to the Pawsitive Beginnings Fox Rescue. The foxes even visit the food truck every

now and then for some treats. The owners are also proud sponsors of the Florida Keys Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. One Grind also offers a breakfast catering option for small gatherings (6-8 people) such as celebrations, family reunions or office meetings. And for the regulars, they offer punch cards so that after a certain number of visits, you can get a reward in the form of the delicious food you keep coming back for. In the near future they plan to have weekly ice cream socials on Fridays, to give the community a spot to enjoy the weekend and each other. Their current hours are from 7 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday (closed on Wednesdays), and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and Sundays. This food truck is yet another reminder that the Keys community is full of kind and caring people, wanting to make a difference and add quality to the local scene. Visit onegrindkl.com or search One Grind CritelliCooper on Facebook for more information.

CONSERVATION TIP

HAMMER TIME!

Sharks are super important to our ecosystem. We need to protect certain species that are threatened. To get more involved, take a PADI Shark Aware class to become a shark ambassador.

Rare shark sightings delight divers THIS WEEK’S DIVE REPORT Conditions were okay. The insane winds came down enough to start running trips again. Still, all that energy from the winds and waves takes awhile to calm down. So, even though we could run, there were still decent waves, and the visibility was still a little off. Maybe hammerhead sharks like those conditions, because we saw so many last week. I think we saw four different sharks on separate occasions. This is really ERIC rare. BILLIPS Sharks are an obsession of mine, and we do as much as possible to raise awareness about the imporis the owner, tance of sharks. They’re apex predators that keep our captain and oceans healthy and balanced. instructor at Islamorada Dive Whenever we get to interact with them in the wild, Center and Florida it's an extra special treat. The great hammerhead is Keys Dive Center. my favorite species. It has very distinct characteristics. He specializes in scuba, rebreather, For example, its “hammer” gives it superior vision and aids in capturing prey. The great hammerhead’s dorsal spearfishing and captaining in the fin is also very tall and sickle shaped. Furthermore, Florida Keys. hammerheads can tan. That’s right – research shows that hammerheads can tan from light brown to almost black because they spend so much time on the surface. Interestingly, no cases of cancer have been detected in this shark species, which has led researchers to see if there’s a link between this shark and the prevention and treatment of melanoma.

NEXT WEEK’S DIVE REPORT The wind is finally going to lay down this week and we should get our famous visibility back – just in time for summer. CONSERVATION UPDATE I.CARE will be finally getting back out there Saturday to plant corals after being grounded by the wind for a couple weeks. Key Dives will be conducting the outplantings. Don’t forget that locals can dive free to help I.CARE plant, monitor and maintain endangered corals. Call us for more details!

Come visit I.CARE at Anglers Reef on Sunday. They’ll have a booth at the 3rd annual Jeff Leonia Reel & Steel tournament weigh in and party. This tournament raises funds for a kids sea camp that will certify less fortunate kids in scuba.

i friends! Reef the fox here with your weekly “Reef’s Report.” So how about that storm in Key Largo last week, huh? Pretty wild. I was outside playing and all of a sudden the temperature dropped a bunch and stuff was flying around. I heard a tornado touched down close to us and boy oh boy, I am glad it didn’t blow this foxy boy away. Jasper and Penny got the memo about hiding REEF under the bed in case of emergency. I must have THE FOX skipped that part in fox school. “Go to ground” or something like that. Needless to say, there were Reef is a red fox leaves and branches everywhere — and those rethat was saved from a fur farm. ally hard seeds that sound like bombs when they He now lives in hit the roof. Mom had fun cleaning it up. I tried to Key Largo with help her use the leaf blower but she said I was no his human, Nicole help at all. Jasper the fox got to go on a big adventure down to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center on April 21. Our friends there let our veterinarian, Dr. Claudio, use their X-ray machine so he wouldn’t have to go all the way to his office in Miami. How cool is that? Some of you may know that Jasper spent the longest time on the fur farm and as a result has some pretty serious neurological and physical issues, including arthritis. Jasper receives laser acupuncture once a month but mom really wants to be able to purchase our own laser device so she can treat Jasper more often. Those lasers aren’t cheap; the one the vet uses costs $10,000. We don’t need one that fancy, of course. Mom has started asking for donations, which are all tax-deductible, so if you want to help out Jasper, you can always mail a check to P.O. Box 1165, Tavernier, FL 33070. I know Mom would be super happy if we could get this laser. A fun event happening this weekend is the Indian Key Celebration on the grounds of the Islander Resort. This Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. head on down and celebrate the storied history of Indian Key with the Friends Islamorada State Parks and the Florida Keys History and Discovery Center. Enjoy all types of informative exhibits, demonstrations and speakers. There will be food trucks with all sorts of culinary treats. Anywho, That’s all for this week. Check us out at pawsitivebeginnings.org to keep up with all our social media posts. Until next time, Reef, over and out.

MaiTai is a lab/shepherd mixed breed that’s mostly black to brindle in color. This pretty girl is growing quickly. She is almost 4 months old now and is just the sweetest baby. She is starting to learn basic commands like "sit" and is slowly working on potty training. MaiTai has been through a lot since she was rescued, including losing her sweet little sister Cosmo shortly after they were found. Recently, she was in a house fire and had to be saved by a firefighter. This girl is a survivor. She is still just a little timid around new people, but warms up quickly and will be easy to socialize with. She's fortunate to be in a great temporary home with her rescuers who have shown her so much love. But, this baby girl is looking for her furever family. If you would like to meet sweet MaiTai, please complete an application at www.mprescues.org/adoption-application.

TWO ISLAMORADA RESORTS SOLD

The inaugural Swim Across America in the Florida Keys on April 9 saw a number of swimmers participating to benefit cancer research. A total of 70 swimming for the cause at Founders Park raised more than $130,000. All proceeds support early-stage cancer research at Miami Cancer Institute. “What an incredible event to be part of with the support from our local community, Founders Park, the SAA personnel, the Olympic champions, amazing volunteers, cancer survivors, MCI and Baptist Health personnel, donors and wonderful swimmers,” said Susan Latham, race organizer. The next race will take place April 15, 2023. — Jim McCarthy

pair of recently renovated boutique oceanfront hotels in Islamorada have sold. Fisher Inn Resort & Marina contains 37 guestrooms, of which 17 were newly constructed in 2020. The resort also has an outdoor pool and marina that provides easy access to the Atlantic Ocean and world-renowned fishing. Hadley House Resort has 37 guestrooms, a leased marina and watersports operation and an outdoor pool. Hadley House was named for the first wife of author Ernest Hemingway, who lived in Key West in the 1930s and worked on several of his bestknown novels during that era. The sister properties are located on Overseas Highway just minutes apart in Islamorada. The resorts were sold by Songy Highroads, which is headquartered in Atlanta. “The Florida Keys area is consistently one of the top travel destinations in the nation, and Fisher Inn and Hadley House are unique premium boutique resort hotels with marina access right on the ocean in a highly restrictive market,” said Todd W. Nocerini, president and chief operating officer at SHR. Strict development rules create a high barrier to entry in the Florida Keys lodging market. The properties included a valuable residential Rate of Growth Ordinance (ROGO) allocation for future development. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. — Contributed

udiences can celebrate world music in the Florida Keys during the annual Afro Roots Fest with a 2022 season that includes multi-artist showcases in Key West and Islamorada. The award-winning festival will take center stage in Key West

Thursday through Saturday, April 28-30, and over Memorial Day weekend in Islamorada, with shows scheduled Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29. Key West fans will gather at 9 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at the Green Parrot Bar, 601 Whitehead St., for an evening of music by Cortadito, renowned for performing Cuban standards from the early 20th century. The band will be joined onstage by Latin Grammy Award nominee Tomás Diaz, who has performed with musicians ranging from Celia Cruz to Bruce Springsteen. There is no cover charge.

The following two evenings showcase the Everglades Songbook Suite, starring Jose Elias playing selections from his compositions and soundscapes that commemorate the otherworldly beauty of South Florida’s Everglades National Park. The Everglades Songbook Suite blends acoustic stylings and natural sounds recorded in the park to create an immersive experience that celebrates its unique ecosystem, flora and fauna. Both performances begin at 8 p.m. at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton St. Friday’s show is set for the facility’s Helmerich Theater, while Saturday’s is an open-air experience at the rooftop Hugh’s View. Tickets are available online at bit.ly/ARFKW2022. “I’m looking forward to sharing the Everglades Songbook Suite with our audiences in Key West for the first time,” said Elias, the Afro Roots Fest founder as well as a featured musician. “As a resident of the Upper Keys, it’s gratifying to see how the festival has evolved over the course of the last four years and how festival patrons continue to embrace it.” The Memorial Day weekend concerts in Islamorada are to take place at the Florida Keys Brewing Co., 81611 Old Highway. Attendees can expect craft beer and melodic offerings from some of Florida’s top world-music talents. Saturday evening’s show, beginning at 6 p.m. at the popular brewery, will spotlight the Caribbean-influenced world beat mastery of Johnny Dread, paired with the Latininfused rhythms of Javier García. Sunday’s musical schedule begins at 4 p.m. Audiences can sway to the sounds of the nine-piece Latin funk band Suenalo, a critically acclaimed South Florida favorite, and the funky New Orleans style of the Bad Apples Brass Band. Both shows will be in the beer garden and admission is free. Afro Roots Fest is staged by Community Arts and Culture, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing understanding through the cultivation, preservation and presentation of cultural music and arts programs and experiences. — Contributed

SCHOOL THEATER RETURNS IN DRAMATIC FASHION

Drama Club prepares to dazzle audiences, Key Largo School receives funding to start a new drama program KELLIE BUTLER FARRELL www.keysweekly.com

T

he bright lights of live theater will soon shine down on Coral Shores High School as actors prepare for their first production in two years. COVID-19 abruptly dropped the curtain on performances in 2020, leaving many aspiring thespians struggling to fill the void. "Theater is kind of an escape for me, a home, so not having that along with the companions that come with theater, it's been really hard to just keep on keeping on," said CSHS senior Gabi Rivera. Rivera and 13 other actors are busy rehearsing for the Harry Potter-inspired comedy, “Puffs.” "I'm really excited because my freshman year the production we were doing got canceled because of COVID, as well as our state competition, so this kind of feels like it's risen from the ashes and it's a revival of the program," said junior Aleisa Crumb. Crumb also serves as the student director for the play. The play involves a lot of improvisation, with actors having to think on their feet. Coral Shores drama and musical director Suzanne Gagliardini says that aspect will add to the excitement. "On the night of, I don't know what story they're going to come up with. It's very, very exciting. They entertain me. There's so much talent, it's extraordinary," said Gagliardini. As Coral Shores prepares for opening night on Friday, May 13, Key Largo School learned it received two grants, totaling $21,750, to start a drama program. The extracurricular program will be led by Michele Zofchak, who was instrumental in developing the Coral Shores drama program before taking a job at KLS. "The kids really need something to keep them happy and involved and connected to the school and theater has so many opportunities," said Zofchak, “not just for the extroverts who want to be on stage, but for the kids who want to be backstage and do makeup, hair and costumes and build sets and be stage managers.” She plans to start the drama program at the beginning of the next school year at KLS. The Keys Children's Foundation gave $11,750 to KLS for the drama program and $10,000 was awarded by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) in collaboration with the Key Players.

"The kids really need something to keep them happy and involved and connected to the school and theater has so many opportunities, not just for the extroverts who want to be on stage, but for the kids who want to be backstage and do makeup, hair and costumes and build sets and be stage managers.” — Michele Zofchak

"We're going to give them support as far as helping them with production, helping them with publicity, basically whatever she needs," said Jonelle Kop, president of the Key Players. Kop has volunteered with the community, non-profit theater group for 21 years and says this grant money will be well spent. "Today's day and age the kids are on their phones constantly” said Kop, “and having interpersonal communication with people and being able to speak in front of a bunch of people as an art form is getting lost and the theater brings that out." Kop said the Key Players are thrilled to help KLS with this new theater endeavor even as they work to find a new venue for their productions. Their former home, the Lions Club, recently sold. The Murray Nelson Center is an option, but Kop said performing at the government center is now more costly. Kop is looking for other rehearsal and performance locations and urges anyone with a possible venue to give her a call at (305) 942-4339. “Puffs” runs Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 at 7 p.m. A matinee performance will take place on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. Monroe County students attend for free. General admission is $10 at the door and advance tickets can be purchased at Coral Shores High School. “Puffs” take place inside the CSHS Performing Arts Center at MM 89.9.

XAY LIFTS ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP

Hurricanes weightlifting program gets first state champ JIM McCARTHY

jim@keysweekly.com

T

here’s a state champion roaming the halls of Coral Shores High School. His name? Xayver Arrington. He’s a 5-foot-10-inch junior and a member of the varsity boy’s weightlifting team and the track and field squad this season. Last weekend, Arrington competed at the 2022 state championships for weightlifting at Port St. Joe High School. He competed in the Class 1A snatch, which sees competitors lifting a barbell from the floor to arm's length overhead in a single, continuous, explosive movement. Lifting in the unlimited division, his first successful snatch was at 225 pounds. “It was a comfortable weight for him,” said coach Erin Hamilton. His second snatch? A whopping 235 pounds. It was enough to beat out second-place Brendan Black of The Bolles School. “I just told him, ‘Xay, you are one, when push comes to shove and it’s “He finished and I time to make it happen, never celebrate until you make it happen.’ I see what the judges He puts everything out say because you never of his head and knows what he needs to do and know what they see. just does it. It just comes When he got those second nature for him.” three white lights, I Arrington said started screaming. He Hamilton was adamant just fell to his knees.” on working on the little — Erin Hamilton things, as “small details make the most difference and keeping calm.” Arrington said becoming a state champion is a feeling like no other. He also placed sixth in the traditional at states. “It gives me something to defend going into next year, which is awesome because I love competition,” he said. Hamilton said the team went into the weekend prepared and knowing that Xay wasn’t only a contender, but that it was potentially his to lose. “Every meet is its own day. It can basically be won or lost in just one lift,” she said. “The other competitor had to hit 230 to qualify. His third lift he cleared it. Xay had his second lift at 235 and it was basically perfect. It was the best lift he’s done.

“He finished and I never celebrate until I see what the judges say because you never know what they see,” Hamilton continued. “When he got those three white lights, I started screaming. He just fell to his knees. We were just so excited.” Arrington is the first state champion in the Hurricanes weight lifting program, which launched four years ago. Hamilton said she’s particularly proud of the 14 weightlifters that made up the varsity boy’s program this year. Thirteen of them competed at districts. The team won district for snatch and traditional, which consists of bench press and clean-and-jerk. The team took fourth in the traditional during regionals. “This group is just so hardworking. They put in the time and effort,” she said. “It was such a focused group.” Joining Arrington at states was senior Orlando Pera. He competed in snatch in the 154-weight class. He placed 10th. “That was another huge accomplishment for him,” Hamilton said. “Top 10 in the state is wonderful.” With Arrington’s success, Hamilton said she hopes the boys weightlifting grows in the years to come. She said she knows many male athletes out there that could win champions. With many weightlifters participating in other sports, Hamilton said the program allows them to increase their overall strength, speed and other abilities. “Any kind of these Olympic movements we’ve been doing translate into athleticism on and off the field and court,” she said.

Xayver Arrington stands atop the podium as the Class 1A snatch state champion in the unlimited weight division during the state championship at Port St. Joe High School last weekend.

From left, Xayver Arrington, Class 1A snatch state champion in the unlimited weight division, weightlifting coach Erin Hamilton, and Orlando Pera, Coral Shores weightlifter who finished 10th in 154-pound, Class 1A snatch.
