ebate over a redevelopment proposal for district property in Key West, as well as updates on strategic planning and standards-based grading, consumed the majority of the April 26 meeting of the Monroe County School Board. The meeting’s early workshop session saw discussion of an unsolicited proposal by SPGL LLC – the same company responsible for 42 affordable housing units available to the Monroe County Sheriff on Stock Island and in Key West – for the development of the school district’s 5.9-acre administrative headquarters on Trumbo Road in Key West and the adjacent Housing Authority parcel at 240 White St. The proposal includes 76 rental apartments, a new two-story, 20,000-square-foot administrative building, and 1.27 acres of green space. Under the initial proposal, SPGL would exclusively design, build, finance and maintain the project under a longterm ground lease. While school board chair John Dick and vice chair Andy Griffiths ultimately supported moving forward with initial stages of the proposal process, Griffiths and board members Bobby

Highsmith and Sue Woltanski suggested a direct meeting with the district’s long-standing housing task force, a clear plan for vacating the district’s current facilities on the property, and input from other proposals before taking significant steps with SPGL’s plan. “We’ve had a committee running for years now about how we’re going to redevelop, what our needs are, what needs to be going there, and we haven’t had any real feedback or a workshop with that committee,” said Highsmith. “The folks that have spent so much time and energy working on this committee, we owe it to them to hear what they have to say about this and the overall project development.” “I’d like to know where our administration is going to go and how we’re going to pay for that before we move forward,” said Woltanski. “I don’t feel like I know the long game of how the pieces are going to fit together financially.” Superintendent Theresa Axford spoke in favor of moving forward with the proposal process, adding that she had met with the task force the day before to discuss SPGL’s plan. “I think what the task force wants more than anything is to put one foot in front of the other, looking at what

comes before us and making decisions as we go along,” she said. “They were totally supportive of this conversation with you today. … The task force does feel a sense of urgency about moving forward with this.” With a split opinion, the board voted to postpone formal consideration of SPGL’s proposal until after an upcoming meeting with the housing task force. IN OTHER NEWS • In addition to a special award for the athletic and academic performance of state champion weightlifter Rylan Chapa, the district honored Marian Buccafurni, chair of the Middle Keys Future Fund, with a GEMS award for supporting the Dolphin Pride student rewards programs at Stanley Switlik Elementary and Marathon High School. • The meeting later shifted to a strategic plan update delivered by consultant Elisa Levy. Following concerns from parents that the plan’s development had not allowed room for parental input, Levy cited extensive efforts to involve parents in the data-gathering and input stages. Various avenues of input included, but were not limited to: surveys from more than 1,200 parents and teachers; more than 70 focus groups with teachers, staff and district administration; a total of five live and virtual town hall meetings with parents; and two focus groups with Spanish- and Creolespeaking families. Levy outlined a plan to accelerate learning for students by focusing on increasing reading proficiency in the third grade, increasing the percentage of students making gains in their English and language arts performance between 3rd and 10th grade, and increasing the high school acceleration rate. The plan also details efforts to foster student creativity, self-knowledge, and social and emotional intelligence through partnerships with art, theater, cultural and environmental organizations, as well as specialized curriculum to promote relationship building with teachers and peers. Parents wishing to provide further input on the strategic plan will be afforded an opportunity to do so at the school board’s May 10 meeting at Coral Shores High School. ‘WE’RE HERE TO HELP YOU’

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Good Health Clinic offers completely free healthcare for low-income and uninsured Keys residents

With their mission complete, the Friends of Old Seven can happily ride off into the sunset. ANDY NEWMAN/Florida Keys News Bureau

FRIENDS OF OLD SEVEN ANNOUNCES FINAL DONATIONS, DISSOLUTION Friends, We are extremely pleased to inform you that the long-awaited reopening of the Old Seven MileBridge commenced on Jan. 12, 2022. The Old Seven Mile Bridge – 110 years old, 2 miles long, and traversing what is considered to be the most beautiful section of the Florida Overseas Highway – needed to be significantly restored and then preserved and maintained in the future. Our organization’s long-standing mission is precisely what has been accomplished: save, restore, maintain and enhance the Old Seven Mile Bridge and adjacent areas. We are extremely proud to have been instrumental in achieving this through our volunteers, members and overall community support and hard work for the past ten years. People may now again walk, bicycle or roller blade across the newly refurbished bridge from the City of Marathon to Pigeon Key. We thank the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Monroe County, the City of Marathon, the Pigeon Key Foundation and the thousands of individuals and entities from the Florida Keys and around the world for their wonderful support in helping to make a reality of this long-held dream. Now that our mission has been accomplished, the board of the Friends of Old Seven approved a resolution to dissolve the organization, including distributing its remaining assets as follows: A check for $18,000 was presented to the city of Marathon on April 12 to be held in a trust for improvements to Sunset Park at the entrance to the Old Seven Mile Bridge. Marathon is seeking an operational lease for Sunset Park that will allow it to manage the park and build a permanent restroom

facility. If the city obtains 100% funding for the restroom facilities, it can apply the funds to other improvements in Sunset Park, including a tunnel under the Overseas Highway connecting the park and Knights Key Blvd. In the event another entity is designated to manage Sunset Park, the funds shall be transferred by the city to that entity upon completion and operational approval of a restroom facility. If a restroom facility is not constructed with operational approval by Dec. 31, 2024, the $18,000 held in trust by the city of Marathon shall be paid to the Pigeon Key Foundation as an unrestricted gift. Thus, all funds collected will be used for the enhancement of facilities for the utilization of any visitors to the Old Seven Mile Bridge. A plaque commemorating Friends of Old Seven and its board members for their contributions to the successful restoration of the Old Seven Mile Bridge will be placed at Sunset Park. Remaining assets will be used to cover any outstanding expenses, and any remaining balance will be donated to the Marathon Chamber of Commerce. On April 18, following the $18,000 donation ceremony at City Hall, board members celebrated the conclusion of our mission with a toast and farewell at the foot of the newly restored Old Seven Mile Bridge. Again, this incredible effort to “Save Old Seven” was accomplished by all of you, the Friends of Old Seven, who supported the effort, attended events, signed petitions and donated funds. We are eternally grateful for your participation in this effort. Sincerely, Bernard Spinrad, president Mike Puto, vice president Mary Cinotti, secretary Greg Lindeberg, treasurer

n 2022, it seems that many, if not all, health care facilities are often overrun. But for Good Health Clinic, a facility serving low-income uninsured patients in the Keys, the doors are wide open. Located in Tavernier with a satellite facility in Marathon established in 2018, the clinic is committed to providing health care to local families most in need. Uninsured patients who fall below the 200% federal poverty guideline threshold – for example, less than $2,265 per month in gross income for a single individual – are invited to apply for a year of free health care. There are no deductibles, no co-pays, and nearly 100 volunteer medical providers throughout the Keys and MiamiDade area to ensure that patients receive the care they need. “The big ones we especially pride ourselves on are patients who have been neglected or failed by the health care system,” said program and development manager Brittany Parker. Services arranged by the clinic vary widely, but the staff stands by their patients through complications ranging from basic diabetic care and assistance with prescriptions to complex cancer therapies at the Miami Cancer Institute. Funded by grants and donations, the clinic served 878 patients in 2021, with more than $3.1 million in donated medical services and more than $1.2 million in pharmaceutical donations. Still, the organization would like to see more patients walk through their doors, particularly at the Marathon clinic. “I want to make sure that people know we’re there,” said Parker, noting that the satellite office typically sees between two and eight patients a day at the moment. “We’re here to help you. Please come in.” Good Health Clinic’s services are open to Keys residents only. Potential patients may apply at thegoodhealthclinic.org/become-a-patient/. For those without income or unable to provide official tax documents, independent income affidavits are available to assist applicants as they move through the process. The Tavernier office at 91555 Overseas Hwy. is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., while the Marathon satellite clinic in the Gulfside Village Plaza is open on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Expansion of the Marathon clinic’s hours in the near future is a possibility in the works.

SERVING STUDENTS LOCAL AUTISM NONPROFIT FINDS A FITTING SPACE AT NEW SCHOOL JIM McCARTHY jim@keysweekly.com

A

utism Society of the Keys (ASK) founder Jill Campbell gazed at her new, spacious office located at the new Carrie Brazer Center for Autism in Tavernier. The journey began some 12 years ago at Campbell’s home as she began to meet with parents in search of answers and assistance regarding autism. The guidance Campbell offers to local families has grown so much that it drew her to find a larger spot in the Upper Keys to carry out critical work in getting the necessary resources into families’ hands. “It’s fitting to be in a school like this,” Campbell said. “It just made sense to have us under the same roof.” A nonprofit, ASK aims to help families affected by autism — one of the great health epidemics in the world today with roughly 136 new diagnoses each day. With parents knowing little about autism, Campbell said ASK’s goals are providing answers and educating parents on what steps they need to take. Campbell said her new office opens opportunities for meetings to educate parents and bring families together for some fun events. She hopes to emulate what she’s done in the Lower Keys out of the Basilica School of St. Mary Star of the Sea. “The school was supportive and allowed us to use their library to accommodate a craft event or a speaker. With this partnership in the

Upper Keys, we’ll be able to do more,” she said. Campbell said 1 in 10,000 children was diagnosed with autism in the 1980s. Today, 1 in 44 children has autism. If the rate continues, she said, 80% of boys could have autism by 2032. And boys are five times more likely to have autism compared to girls. At 2 1/2 years old, Campbell’s son, Craig, was diagnosed with autism. She knew very little about autism at that time. She also didn’t know how much it’d consume her everyday life. The support that Campbell and her family found among those with shared experiences, however, prompted them to form ASK as a local resource, sounding board and community education program. Craig received the therapy needed to help grow his daily life skills. Today, he drives a car, is in typical high school classes and speaks as much as anyone. Campbell said a small

classroom atmosphere, such as the one Craig was in during his days at Island Christian School, aided his progress. At the Carrie Brazer Center for Autism in Tavernier, located in the former Ocean Studies Charter School, students are receiving one-on-one attention and support. Opening a year ago, the school currently has 10 students. Carrie Brazer is a Florida-certified special education teacher who founded the Carrie Brazer Center for Autism in 1999. With a master’s degree in varying exceptionalities, Brazer’s school in Miami has served students for 22 years. With a new location in Tavernier, she said, parents can send their children to obtain the help they need locally. Brazer said the school’s individualized curriculum allows students to engage with what they’re learning through touch. “Everything that’s going on in the curriculum, they can move around on the iPad,” she said. “It follows Sunshine State Standards in Florida and modifies at their pace.” Brazer said the school accepts the Gardiner Scholarship, which provides thousands of dollars in assistance based on where children are on the spectrum. She said the school also accepts all insurance so children can receive behavior therapy, which allows students to work closely with behavioral assistants during or after school in order to reduce behavior problems and increase daily life skills. In addition, Brazer said they’re looking to open a classroom in the fall for neurotypical children. Brazer said the Gardiner scholarship gives a sibling a free scholarship to attend the school. “If there’s a neurotypical child and an autistic child, they can both come to school under the same scholarship so parents don’t have to travel to two schools,” she said. Families are invited to an open house on Saturday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to tour the school and partake in various activities. Parents will be able to walk through classrooms and meet staff while kids can enjoy hot dogs and some face painting. Visit autismsocietyofthekeys.com for more on ASK and cbc4autism.org for more on the Carrie Brazer School for Autism.

ven to those privy to the plan beforehand, the scene in front of Marathon High School on the morning of April 21 left several mental images that will be hard to forget. Sponsored by the MHS Champions for Change Club in partnership with the Monroe County Sheriff and Marathon Fire Rescue, students were called out of their classrooms to observe a staged emergency response to a drunk driving crash. With Marathon Fire Academy students participating as a training exercise, onlookers watched as the jaws of life were deployed to free injured students, an intoxicated driver was given field sobriety tests and taken into custody, and emergency responders dealt with the tragic fallout of passengers “killed” on impact and in the immediate aftermath of the crash. The club followed up the demonstration with an assembly featuring substance abuse simulations and a presentation by MCSO. AAA auto club statistics show that 39% of high school teenagers admit they or their friends will be under the influence during prom and graduation, and 87% of teens believe their peers are likely to drive impaired instead of calling an adult for a ride. Thankfully, a safe and enjoyable MHS prom followed the demonstration just two days later. — Alex Rickert

MANY HELPING HANDS Collaborative community rescue effort saves manatee struck by propeller ALEX RICKERT

T

hanks to a collaborative effort and swift action by five partner organizations in a race against the sun, a critically wounded manatee is on his way to recovery. Originally stranded on grass flats south of 63rd Street Ocean in Marathon after suffering severe lacerations to the head consistent with a propeller strike, the 10-foot, 1,025-pound male manatee was found and reported on the evening of April 19 by the Weston and Christianson families vacationing in the area. Crews from Dolphin Research Center and Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters’ manatee rescue teams arrived to assess and assist the injured sea cow under the guidance of DRC veterinarian Dr. Scott Gearhart. After loading the manatee onto a foam pad and specially designed stretcher to remove him from the grass flat, FWC law enforcement officers and rescue crew members gently towed him to Sombrero Beach. The crew was able to successfully remove the manatee from the water and transfer him to a strand-

ing ambulance provided by Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder. The ambulance then rendezvoused with FWC’s manatee rescue team in Islamorada and transferred the manatee for transport up to Sea World Orlando, where he arrived at 3:30 a.m. Initial imaging at SeaWorld revealed a skull fracture, and though the facility’s veterinary teams removed some fragments of bone, the injury did not appear to penetrate the animal’s brain case. As of press time, veterinarians remain cautiously optimistic that the manatee will make a full recovery and will eventually be a candidate for release. He continues to receive antibiotics and nutritional support as SeaWorld’s rehab teams monitor him closely. SeaWorld is one of the only facilities able to accept injured manatees due to the large influx of starving animals throughout an ongoing Unusual Mortality Event. The expedited rescue was the direct result of a proper report of injured wildlife by the Weston and Christianson families. All reports of injured manatees should be directed to 888-404-FWCC.

THE QUALIFIED CAPTAIN Remembering ‘Capt’n Mike’ Barber ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com

O

n March 23, the Keys Weekly family lost one of its own, with the sudden passing of Michael “Capt’n Mike” Barber following an unexpected battle against aggressive pneumonia. A frequent columnist for the Marathon Weekly, Captain Mike was the modern-day definition of an old salt. His pieces were typically filled with reflections drawn from a life of tranquility on the water, or informative essays filled with words of boating wisdom. More often than not, his informative columns were inspired by observations of discourteous or ignorant boaters. His writing was true to form, clearly conveying the tone of his internal monologue as he watched these events unfold and formulated the thesis of a teachable moment to share with readers. In a world full of social media accounts making light of boating foibles, Mike provided the same in a more eloquent print form for Keys Weekly readers. And after decades of experience on, around and under the water, he had certainly earned that right. From anchoring to docking, from marine sanitation to outrunning storms, Captain Mike had either been there, done that, or made the mistake himself. And when he was annoyed … well, after decades of dealing with the same nonsense from fellow boaters, he had earned that right, too. His pride and joy was the sailing vessel Whensday, the longawaited fulfillment of a dream he began with his high school sweetheart, Vickie Nelson, in 1977. A long-distance relationship eventually separated the two for more than three decades, as Nelson joined the Air Force while Barber embarked on a journey as an officer with the Merchant Marines and submariner in the U.S. Navy that would take him around the globe. But after 35 years of keeping tabs on one another through their mothers, Nelson recalls making a phone call in 2012. “He answered, and I was surprised,” she said. “I said, ‘Are you single?’ He said, ‘Yup. Are you?’” Following two years of a long-distance relationship – Nelson lived in Georgia at the time, Barber in North Carolina – the couple purchased the 41-foot 1973 Gulf Star sailboat and moved to Marathon on Veterans’ Day in 2014. Barber soon became a staple in the Boot Key Harbor community, where he was known as a quintessential jack of all trades and wealth of nautical knowledge. But as Nelson can attest, his love for the water could call him away at any time. “He was known for saying, ‘I’ve got to get out of here,’ and then he’d go sail and disappear for a while,” she said. “I was his love, but the water was and always will be his mistress.” Conversations with those who knew Mike best revealed hours of stories too long to include in a single newspaper. Many of these are printed in his books “The Water: Life and Adventure,” “Irmageddon” and “Let’s Cruise, But First…” Links to the books and an extensive sailor’s blog are available at whensday.us, but for now, here are just a few excerpts from Captain Mike’s friends’ fondest memories, as told to Keys Weekly: “Mike was always a guy that wanted to go seek adventure. He was always a smart guy. I mean, the guy could do anything and make money at anything. (Vickie) learned to sail from someone who I consider one of the most competent sailors I’ve ever known.” — George Coleman, long-time friend and Cape Fear Community College classmate

Barber spent his final 10 years living out a teenage dream with his high school sweetheart Vickie Nelson. CONTRIBUTED.

“We are all here but for one purpose, and that is to be happy.”

— Capt’n Mike Barber

“Mike and Vickie outran Hurricane Irma and their engines stopped. So they had to wait for the feeder bands of the hurricane to come in to get wind to sail below Cuba. That’s Mike. That describes him perfectly. … He was a man who stood by his principles, even if people didn’t like it. He didn’t get emotionally involved in a bunch of nonsense.” — Sam Iverstine, friend “He was always honest and straightforward. He wouldn’t tell you you were good-looking if you looked ugly as hell, that sort of thing. He was very generous with his help, instruction or otherwise. That's how I view him. He could talk about any subject. … And he was old school. If all the lights went out and the GPS satellites fell into the sea, Michael would be just fine. I would trust him with anything.” — Bob Hazel, friend “Mike was a storyteller, with the stories to back up his mouth. Sometimes we would avoid (his stories) if we had ice in the dinghy, because if Mike started talking, your ice would start melting. We loved Mike, even though he wasn't for everyone. He was a grumble sometimes, very sarcastic, and had a sharp wit with a gleam in his eyes. … He loved being on the water, and we have no doubt that the ocean was his first mistress. He had really cool hats, a super cool pipe and from the day we met him we always thought he was one of the most photogenic people we’d ever met.” — Missy and Joel Sequeira, friends “One of the attributes I remember most about Mike is that he could master anything quickly. … From computers to music, sailing and mechanical work, Mike’s ability to quietly understand, adapt and master skills has really led him to vast life experiences. .. Above all, what made his skills unique is that he liked to listen and ask questions. … He felt even in the biggest piles of rubbish, there was always some information to be found.” — Matt McJunkin, assistant ports director, City of Marathon Fair winds and following seas, Capt’n Mike.

CRANKING UP THE COMPETITION

Dolphins’ track and field teams advance 24 athletes to regionals TRACY MCDONALD www.keysweekly.com

M

arathon High School traveled to Miami to compete in the FHSAA 1A District 16 track meet held at Palmer Trinity School on April 20. At the end of the day, the boys team captured second place and the girls took third. Most importantly, two dozen runners, jumpers and throwers qualified for the regional meet in two weeks, with their sights set on a coveted invite to the state meet held in Gainesville on May 11-14. In order to qualify for regionals, athletes must place in the top four for their events, with the top three earning hardware. Boys coach Jim Murphy attributed the team’s success to the athletes’ efforts across the board. “We have had many school records broken this season in our field and hurdle events,” he said. “It shows we are becoming a more well-rounded program.” Mason Buxton led the boys team in points, medaling in three of his four events. Buxton took firsts in javelin and pole vault, sixth in the open 800, and ran a leg of the third-place 4x800 relay team. Buxton has been a part of Marathon’s elite distance squad for several years, but his field events are what set him apart. His overall win in the pole vault was a nice surprise for the Fins, considering that he picked up a pole for the first time just a week before the district meet. Fellow pole vaulter Victor Segura will also represent the Dolphins at regionals with his second-place finish.

Junior Aaron Dolton was not far behind on the points board, taking second place in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, third in the high jump, and eighth in the triple jump. In his first year on the track team, Dolton broke the school’s 300-meter hurdle record, a mark that will remain unbroken as the school transitions to run the 400-meter hurdles in 2023. He is not complacent in his progress, stating that his goal is “making it to states.” Behind Dolton but still earning a medal and a spot at regionals was Mylan Henriquez, who placed third in 110 and 300 hurdles, and jumper Fabbianho Louis Jeune, who took third in the triple jump. A trio of senior throwers took turns breaking one another’s personal bests and earned spots on the regionals roster. Rodolfo Castillo Perez took first place in shot put and fourth in discus. Sergio Morales placed fourth in shot put and third in discus, and Kymani Dixon took second place in discus. Distance runners Jakub Bursa, Vaclav Bursa, Pedro Zapata and Buxton finished in second place in the 4x800 relay and will participate at regionals as a group. Vaclav will also compete in the individual 800 after earning a third-place finish, while Zapata secured a spot in the open 1600, taking a third-place finish while running with severe shin splints. Freshman Mikail Marshall was the lone Fin to medal in a sprinting event, earning third place in the 100. His sixth-place finish in the 200 was a few hundredths of a second shy of qualifying to move on, but was good enough to earn points for the team in the meet standings.

The MHS boys track team secured multiple podium finishes on their way to a second place overall trophy. LANCE MARTIN/Contributed.

From left, the Lady Fins 4x800 team of Rain Banks, Rilynn Richards, Jordan MacDonald and Ava Merryman earned a bronze medal in the event. LANCE MARTIN/Contributed.

For the girls, relays were the name of the game, with all three squads moving on to regionals. In the 4x800, Rain Banks, Ava Merryman, Jordan MacDonald and Rilynn Richards captured third place. Also taking third was the 4x100 team of Kayesha Christian, Abrianna Marshall, Janiya Pyfrom and Caylie Globe. The 4x400 team took fourth with Banks, Christian, Merryman and MacDonald pulling double duty. Banks also managed to fit in an additional eight laps to secure a fourth place finish in the 3200 individual event. Two Lady Fins came up with individual wins, with junior Abrianna Marshall pulling off a big upset in the high jump and eighth-grader Ava Merryman winning the pole vault. The Fins dominated the vault, with fellow eighth-grader Ryleigh Garcia coming in third and freshman Ella Dunn taking fourth. Kayesha Christian took a break from her relays to secure second place in the long jump event, while fellow field competitors Nicole Merryman and Molly Prince took third and second place in the shot put and discus, respectively. The two-week hiatus in competition gives the athletes a chance to work on the nuances of their individual events, including their hurdling form, jumping marks, starting block usage and relay handoffs. It also allows a few of the Fins to heal a bit, as some are nursing minor injuries and the usual aches and pains after a long season.

CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER Marathon Dolphins baseball blazes into the postseason

The Marathon Dolphins baseball team is riding a meteoric high entering the postseason. Going into their final regular-season game on April 22, the team knew a historic opportunity was within reach: a home win on Senior Night over conference rival Westwood Christian would send the Fins into the postseason with an 8-2 conference record as the top seed in the South Florida Baseball Conference championship tournament. “We’ve been part of the conference for more than 10 years, and we’ve never been in a position to be able to lock up that number one seed,” said head coach Joey Gonzalez. Though the coaching staff had confidence in their team’s depth, Marathon’s sluggers still had to contend with talented Westwood pitcher Chris Estrada, a 6-foot-3 lefty capable of delivering fastballs over 80 mph. “He did throw the ball really well,” admitted Gonzalez. “He struck out a dozen of our guys, but at the end of the day, we put the at-bats together when we needed them most, and we were the scrappier team.” Marathon took an early lead while relying on the arm and bat of junior pitcher Ryan Yablon, who notched two hits while carrying the Fins through five innings of work on the mound before senior Ben Hiller took over for the final two frames. “We did the little things right,” said Gonzalez. “We didn’t really overpower them in terms of hitting, but we got on base and made things happen.” The final out in the top of the seventh inning found the Dolphins rushing the field, caps thrown in the air with a 6-2 win in the books as DJ Khaled’s “All I Do is Win” blared across the field. The team’s celebration was short-lived, however, as the looming conference tournament found the Fins matched up against Miami Country Day Spartans just four days later on April 26. But Marathon was more than prepared, as evidenced by a dominant 12-2 win over just five innings. Eager to avenge a shutout loss to the same team on the same field just three weeks prior, the Fins came out (literally) swinging.

“That didn’t sit well with us these last three weeks … and the switch that flipped yesterday was a switch that I’d never really seen before,” said Gonzalez. “The fire that was in these guys’ eyes was just amazing, and it translated from the very first pitch.” Though the two teams’ previous contests this year were decided by a total of three runs, the Fins put the Spartans away early on Tuesday, with Marathon’s leadoff trio of Yablon, Hiller and sophomore Dylan Ziels going 10 for 10 in their first at-bats en route to a team total of 15 hits against only one error. The Fins again split time on the mound, with Yablon throwing the first four innings before allowing Ziels to use the fifth frame as a tune-up. “Dylan has kind of been our workhorse all year, and we knew the long-term goal was to be able to have him on the hill in the championship if we were to make that game,” said Gonzalez. “All three of our main guys will be fully ready to go for Friday night’s championship.” The lone obstacle standing in the way of a historic conference championship for Marathon is second-seeded Ransom Everglades. Marathon split its previous two matchups with the Raiders, with each team claiming a road win in the season series. Though a win would go down in the record books for Marathon, the team’s season has already been a resounding success. “It’s been a dream come true. It’s been everything for us, and we couldn’t have scripted it any better,” said Gonzalez, heaping praise on his assistant coaching staff for a well-rounded approach to the season. “Our end goal was to get to this conference championship game, and it’s been such a relief for me knowing that I have such a knowledgeable group of guys around me to help.” Dolphins fans can cheer the team on in person at Miami Country Day School on Friday, April 29. A tournament awards presentation and all-conference team announcements will begin at 5:45 p.m., with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. For fans unable to catch the game in person, a live streaming link will be posted to the Marathon Dolphins Athletics Facebook page. FM 98.7 Conch Country will have a live broadcast of the game. Go Fins.

The Fins kept the score close through eight innings before Coral Shores’ bats awakened in the final frame, driving in 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning for a final score of 15-6. Eager to avenge the loss, the team used the added motivation to secure its first ever regularseason conference championship with a 6-2 win over the Westwood Christian Warriors just two days later. Head baseball coach Joey Gonzalez calls Ricardo Melendez, left, and Lincy Montenegro ‘staples of the baseball team.’

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Alex Perdomo, left, and Yuni DeLeon represented MHS well at the Florida High School State Weightlifting Championship. CONTRIBUTED.

WEIGHTLIFTING On the weekend of April 23, two of Marathon’s top weightlifters, Yuni DeLeon and Alex Perdomo, traveled up to Port St. Joe’s High School in the panhandle to compete in the 2022 Florida High School State Weightlifting Championship. Both qualified to compete in the snatch motion, rather than the traditional bench and clean and jerk motions. Now in its second year as a state championship event, the objective of the snatch motion is to lift a barbell from the ground to an overhead position in one continuous motion. Perdomo lifted in the 139-pound weight class, but unfortunately had a rough morning after experiencing early success with lighter weights. Competing in the 199-pound weight class, DeLeon began by lifting 155 pounds, progressing to a 165-pound lift and finally setting a personal record with a successful 175-pound attempt. Entering the competition as the 19th-ranked lifter in the event, DeLeon ended the day as the 9th place lifter in his weight class.

Ricardo Melendez and Lincy Montenegro have been a part of the Marathon varsity baseball family all throughout high school, but this year they accepted a special role. “We came to the first game of the season ready to work the concession stand. Just before the game started, coach Joey (Gonzalez) approached us and asked if we would be willing to play music over the loudspeakers,” said Melendez. “Of course he knew that we had the best taste in music, and so we accepted the position.” The pair continued as team managers after the first game because they loved the energy brought each night under the stadium lights. Seeing the motivation and passion of such a strong team, Melendez and Montenegro wanted to be a part of a group that carried that same energy into everything they do. “They are both really hard-working students and very responsible,” said Gonzalez. “They stepped up and filled the role for our team. They were big additions to the atmosphere of all our home games, and their shoes will be hard to fill.” Those close to the two managers often refer to them as the “dynamic duo.” They can always be found together. Ricardo and Lincy said that their friendship hasn't always been the easiest, but that's what makes it so strong and unique. The pair jokingly claim they “didn’t even originally like each other.” But after several classes together with mutual friends, they were soon inseparable. “If one of us is sad, we are sad together,” they said. “If one of us is sick, we are sick together.” Next year, the pair will look to take their friendship into the college world as they begin general studies together at the College of the Florida Keys in Key West.

A NATIONAL TALENT

XAVIER MCKNIGHT’S ACTING SKILLS ARE NO LONGER A KEYS SECRET

X

avier McKnight is a member of a small yet distinguished crowd: a true Conch cast in a nationally touring musical. McKnight was born in Key West, raised in Marathon, and is now acting in New York City. He started acting for Coral Shores High School at the age of 14, and initially planned to go into music education after graduation. However, his band director convinced him to go to New York in pursuit of a musical theater career. Fresh off a successful run as the Minstrel in “Something Rotten” at Key West’s Waterfront Playhouse, his credits today include the national tour of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical” as well as several other regional shows across New York and the Keys. McKnight was kind enough to sit down with Keys Weekly after the conclusion of “Something Rotten” to share a bit more about his story: Full name? Xavier Ryan McKnight What’s your favorite thing about Marathon? The beach! I love Sombrero beach; I think it’s the best beach in the Keys.

1

2

Do you have an “only in the Keys” moment? I was in Key West watching the Conch Republic parade, and everyone barely decorated, but they all had their boats in the parade. It was just a bunch of boats going down Duval Street. And an “only in New York” moment? You get live entertainment that you don’t want, as people just randomly put on shows in the subway and force you to watch. And then they expect you to tip them, when you didn’t ask to watch the show! What is your proudest accomplishment so far? I was the first black actor to play the role of young Max in the national tour of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and that was a lot. I was very stressed, and I wanted to do a good job and inspire all the little black and queer kids who are trying to get into theater. And I think I did … fine (laughs).

We’ve seen you on stage, and we’re certain that “fine” is not the descriptor. Okay, I think I did a good job. There we go. I think I did good, I’ll just say it! If you could change one thing about the theater world, what would it be? I would make it more inclusive. It’s called “The Great White Way” for a reason. Yes, they’re trying to do more colorblind casting, but I also feel like it might not last. Because of the protests and the marches that happened in 2020, they’re trying to seem

like they’re being more inclusive, but we have to see if they’ll stick to it. I would love to see more queer stories, more black stories, more black writers, more women of color. Any advice for people wanting to get on stage? Like Nike says: just do it! You will never know until you try it, and I’m sure you’ll like it. And if you have stage fright, try karaoke first. Get up there, sing some songs, have a drink or two and just let your hair down. What’s a great introductory show for people who “don’t like theater?” “Wicked.” It’s a spectacle; you get to see a bunch of witches flying around and floating in bubbles. Musicals turned into movies: good or bad? It depends. There are some that have been done well, and there are some that have been ruined. I think the “Mamma Mia” adaptation was really good, I think the “Hairspray” adaptation was really good, but I think the “Les Mis” one was terrible! If you could have any musical artist’s works turned into a musical, who would it be? Beyoncé. A Beyoncé musical. We need it. Who do you consider a role model? My mother, Cindy McKnight. She is such an inspiration to me. Everyone always asked me growing up, “What is it like having a blind mom?” I’m like, “It’s the same as having a mom who can see, except my mom can’t drive.” That is literally the only thing she can’t do. She’s an amazing cook, she’s been at the same job for 30 years and she knows everyone in town. She’s one of the most popular women I have ever met in my life. She’s always in the paper, always doing something, always helping someone.

he Florida Keys are known for many weekends of flat calm on the water, ideal for fishing, diving and nearly all aquatic activities. The weekend of April 22-23 was not one of them. Undeterred, 17 boats loaded with 89 anglers battled four- to eightfoot seas, hoping to take home top honors in the inaugural Marathon Premier Sailfish Tournament. The event was the first to feature a sailfish competition in Marathon since the closing of the Leon Shell Memorial Sailfish Tournament. By the time “lines out” was called on April 23, anglers had reported a total of 17 sails caught and released. Team Ofishal took home the win in the inaugural tournament with four caught and released sailfish, while Robert “Reggie” Hiro and Alexis Bowcock ended the weekend as the top male and female anglers, respectively. “We had some amazing, very tough anglers in this tournament,” said tournament founder Katie Lewis. “The one thing I couldn’t control was, of course, the most insane, but everything else went smoothly. I was just really excited that everyone was so receptive to bringing a sailfish tournament back to Marathon.” A reception at Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters, catered by Brutus Restaurant and Seafood Market and Keys Rotisserie, followed the tournament. Trophies donated by Gray Taxidermy were waiting for the winners, while numerous local fishing guides and artists donated items for a silent auction. Proceeds from the charity event will benefit Mission Fishin’, an organization dedicated to providing memorable fishing trips and other marine adventures for special needs children, foster children and their families who would not otherwise be afforded these opportunities. OLDEST WATER HOLE IN THE KEYS? Caribbean Club’s story goes back to 1930s

T Caribbean Club. JERRY WILKINSON COLLECTION/Contributed

here is a bar on Islamorada’s Windley Key with a sign declaring “the oldest most established liquor license in the Keys.” Without even considering some of the older watering holes in Key West, Key Largo’s Caribbean Club could challenge the claim. According to the Key West Citizen, Tom Hanley applied for a liquor license for Rock Harbor’s Caribbean Club in 1935. It is an odd year, a premature year, as the construction of the legendary club did not begin until 1938. More generally associated with mainland developments like Miami Beach, Carl Fisher developed the property. However, broke and in poor health, he began developing the last project of his career, a private yacht club established on some property he owned on Key Largo. On July 12, 1938, Fisher was issued a “war department permit” authorizing him to build the following: a bulkhead, wharf, swimming enclosure and an aquarium. A clubhouse for the yacht club was also built, and, in a Miami News article dated Feb. 8, 1939, it was announced that Ray Harris would be the steward at “Fisher’s new fishing club down at Key Largo – the Caribbean club. It is still in the throes of being built but should soon be ready.” Harris previously worked at a private club Fisher developed in 1922 on Adams Key called the Cocolobo Club. Adams Key is one of the northern keys and is today encompassed by Biscayne National Park. In March 1939, Fisher filed a petition requesting permission to lengthen the club’s pier of “rock filled cribs of railroad ties” from 75 to 90 feet. Four months later, on July 15, 1939, Carl Fisher suffered a stomach hemorrhage and died in a hospital on Miami Beach, an island he began developing circa 1910. He was 65 years old. The Caribbean Club first opened its doors for business in January 1940, with Tom Hanley as the manager and Ray Harris working his culinary magic in the kitchen. Fisher did not own the club. It was deeded to the ownership of its esteemed directors: P.H. Arthur, Philo M. Gelatt, N. Vernon Hawthorne, John Oliver LaGorce, Daniel J. Mahoney, Hugh M. Matheson, William W. Muir, Thomas J. Pancoast, F. Lowrey Wall and C. W. Chase. P.H. Arthur was the club president, and Hugh M. Matheson the commodore.

The club sold in 1945 and, according to a deed made official by an indenture dated May 24, 1945, the deal was made between: “Caribbean Club (formerly named Key Largo Yacht & Fishing Club) a social club not for profit organized and existing under the laws of the State of Florida, party BRAD of the first part, and Right RevBERTELLI erend William Barry as Pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish, Miami Beach, is an author, Florida, party of the second part.” speaker, and FlorCarl Fisher donated five polo ida Keys historian. stables to William Barry and St. His latest book, Patrick’s in 1926, used for church “The Florida Keys Skunk Ape Files,” services and classrooms for its is a fun blend of school. Barry received the proptwo of his favorite erty with “all improvements in or subjects — Florida about said premises except for Keys history and the following articles of personal the Skunk Ape. property: The painting approximately eight feet in length and breadth, the stuffed fish head, the members flags, the elephant foot, and the bronze membership plate.” 1945 appeared to be a popular year for the club’s property transactions. In May 1945, it was reported that Fred Dion purchased the Caribbean Club for $25,000. In December, the club was advertised for sale in the classifieds, with Tom Hanley identified as the club’s operator. In most stories, Hanley is the owner, too. Hanley continued to develop the property and added a sixroom hotel wing. He also offered gambling during the winter tourist season – unless the police happened to be nosing around. The story everyone talks about is whether or not the Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall classic Key Largo was filmed at the Caribbean Club. According to stories written by the people involved with the movie or those writing about them, it was not. However, the Caribbean Club did play a significant role during pre-production. The film was adapted from the 1939 Maxwell Anderson play of the same name. John Huston, the director, liked the title but not the content, so he hired screenwriter Richard Brooks to rework the screenplay to better fit his vision. For inspiration, Huston brought Brooks to Key Largo, where the two men were guests of Mr. Hanley's at the Caribbean Club. Though the club was officially closed for the summer, Hanley brought in help to cook for them and keep their rooms clean. He also brought in gaming tables where Huston and Brooks spent time gambling. Before they left, Huston had allegedly lost about $25,000 playing craps and roulette, and Brooks gambled away around $6,000. On the day they left the club and drove home to the mainland, they spent a little more time at Hanley’s tables. While they gambled, a storm was building. By the time they left, both men had managed to win back a good chunk of their losses. Also, with the weather outside storming, parts of the road were underwater. Of course, the big winner was the Caribbean Club, which became world-famous and is an iconic Florida Keys roadside attraction, still.

PHYSICAL GRAFFITI I see the writing on the wall…

W

hile performing a certain bodily function within the confines of a men’s restroom, I couldn’t help but notice, right before my eyes, inscribed within a hastily-drawn heart on the wall above the urinal for all to see: “Dave & Dawn ’03.” I couldn’t help but wonder at how much love this man Dave must have felt for his beloved Dawn. So much love, that while performing a certain bodily function, he was compelled to take pen in hand (the other hand) and scrawl his message so that other guys performing that same bodily function would read of his unending devotion to Dawn. I was moved. I could also sense that there had been other movements in that same room, although I’m sure that not all of them were related. Dave’s labor of love reminded me of other bathroom graffiti I have seen in the past. In addition to the usual “For a good time, call...” there have been some quite clever inscriptions, some of which I’ll share with you here. Next to the hand blow dryer: “Push button for 2-minute speech by Richard Nixon.” And above the toilet: “Bill Gates downloads here.” Sign in a swimming pool restroom: “We don’t swim in your toilet. Please don’t pee in our pool.” Sign above a toilet: “We aim to please. You aim too, please!” Written on the condom machine: “Don’t buy this gum – it tastes like rubber.” Sign on the inside of a toilet stall: “Patrons are requested to remain seated for the entire performance.” And, “Gentlemen: stand closer. It’s not as long as you think.” And a sign over a local restroom sink: “Employees must wash hands. If employees are unavailable, please wash your own hands.” Written on the interior of a toilet stall door: “Congratulations! You’ve won a free game of Toilet Tennis! Look left!” Written on the left stall wall: “Look right!” Written on the right stall wall: “Look left!” You may want to try and actually visualize this happening to someone. Written on a since-remodeled local restroom wall: “Dyslexics of the world: Untie!” This one seen in a school restroom: “Flush twice – this has to go all the way to the cafeteria!” Written in a restroom years ago: “Question authority.” And right beneath it: “Why?” In a convenience store restroom: “To some, it’s a six-pack. To me, it’s a support group.” And in a public restroom stall: “I feel so strongly

about bathroom graffiti, I signed a partition.” Above a urinal in a local restroom: “Rehab is for quiters.” Right beneath it: “And for bad spelers.” I swear I am JOHN not making this up. BARTUS Here is some more actual bathis the Mayor of room graffiti from the City of Maraaround this great thon. He also is nation of ours. a musician who performs around From a men’s room town. For more in Arizona: “To do is see johnbartus. to be. –Descartes. com To be is to do. – Voltaire. Do be do be do. –Frank Sinatra.” And this from another Arizona location: “It’s hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere.” And from Armand’s Pizza in Washington, D.C.: “If life is a waste of time and time is a waste of life, then let’s all get wasted together and have the time of our lives.” The battle of the sexes is always a hot topic on restroom walls. Consider this gem found over a women’s restroom mirror: “You’re too good for him.” And this from the women’s room in (I swear) Dick’s Last Resort in Dallas: “If it has tires or testicles, you’re going to have trouble with it.” Men, don’t feel slighted. Here are some slightly abridged words of wisdom from Linda’s Bar & Grill in North Carolina: “No matter how good she looks, some other guy is sick and tired of putting up with her crap.” And one to which both sexes can relate, from a women’s restroom in Montana: “Make love, not war. Hell, do both – get married!” None of us here at Keys Disease Central actually suggests that anyone reading this column go out and start defacing restroom walls with a Sharpie. Besides, many public restrooms have come a long way in terms of cleanliness, appearance, fixtures and those few automated motion-sensing paper towel dispensers that actually dispense enough paper towel footage to dry one’s hands. When it comes to bathroom graffiti, it is far better to read than deface. Just write your message on the paper towels instead. - John’s Perpetual Island Tour will be on hiatus until June; please find John’s music on Apple Music/iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Rhapsody, Pandora, etc. www. johnbartus.com

OBITUARY

NANCY JULIA COLETTI 1931-2022 Nancy Julia Coletti, 90, of Simpsonville, South Carolina passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 18 with family by her side. She was born to the late John and Lillian Creighton on Nov. 6, 1931 in Long Island, New York. When Nancy was 9, her family purchased Hamilton Farms #1 and moved to Oneonta, New York. She graduated from Oneonta High School in 1949 and attended Oneonta State University. In 1949 her mother and Uncle Murray also opened the Oneonta Dress Factory. Nancy went on to work for the family business. She married the love of her life, the late “Sal” Coletti, on June 14, 1952. Nancy is survived by their four children: Sal (Tonya) Coletti Jr. , Marie Masson (Avery Lanier), Steve (Deborah) Coletti and Robert (Rebecca) Coletti. She had seven grandchildren: Christine (J. Ross) Renew, Joseph Coletti, Deanna (David) Acosta, Nicole Coletti, the late Toni Coletti, Steven Coletti (Chelsey Perry) and Jamie Hayes. She also had 13 great-grandchildren: Madison, Lily, Kendall, Samuel, Landon, Cameron, Emilia, Carson, Ashton, Benjamin, Charlotte, Areina and Kayla. She is also survived by her sister Madeline (Frank) Bagnardi, brother Joseph (Marianna) Creighton and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Sal and Nancy both worked for Oneonta Dress Company until 1973 until deciding to semi-retire and purchase the Seahorse Motel in Marathon. Their dream of semi-retiring was short-lived when they found motel work was 24/7 and they both worked harder. In addition, Nancy became very active in the community, serving on the board of directors at Fishermen’s Hospital and as the president of the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation. In 1982, they sold the motel and built their dream home. Nancy was a Realtor for five years until her love and best friend Sal passed away on March 29, 1987. She then went on to be an office manager and bookkeeper for the Marathon Yacht Club until she fully retired and moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where she continued to live with her son Steve and daughter-in-law Debbie. Aside from her family, her biggest love was traveling. She had seen much of the world with visits to nearly all the states and many countries. She had a deep devotion to God and was a eucharistic minister in the Catholic Church as well as a member of the San Pablo Catholic Church Ladies Auxiliary. When she was not busy cooking in the kitchen for her family and friends, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, Sudoku, hanging out at the Senior Center, playing cards with her friends, and knitting blankets and clothes for her great grandchildren. Services will be held on Saturday, April 30 at San Pablo Catholic Church. A reception with light refreshments will begin at 10:30 a.m., with visitation at 11:30 a.m. and a funeral mass at noon. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Big Pine Key. Condolences may be offered at cannonbyrd.com. In lieu of flowers, please donate in honor of Nancy to the American Cancer Society, to Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys, or your favorite charity.

DOLPHIN CONNECTION EARNS AMERICAN HUMANE CERTIFIED SEAL FOR EXCEPTIONAL ANIMAL WELFARE

A

merican Humane, the country’s first national humane organization and the world’s largest certifier of animal welfare practices, has announced that Dolphin Connection on Duck Key earned the American Humane Certified seal, demonstrating the exceptional welfare and treatment provided to animals in its care. The facility passed rigorous expert third-party audits to join a growing number of leading zoological institutions that have earned the American Humane Certified designation. “All animals, including those being cared for in our zoos, aquariums and conservation parks, are entitled to humane treatment,” said Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane. “The Humane Certified seal of approval assures zoo and aquarium visitors that the facility meets the highest standards of animal care. Animals enrich our planet and our lives, and humanity has a moral obligation to treat them with the respect they deserve. We commend Dolphin Connection for this great achievement.” The Humane Conservation program is the first certification effort solely dedicated to helping verify the welfare and demonstrably humane treatment of animals living in zoos, aquariums and conservation centers across the globe. The program enforces rigorous, science-based and comprehensive criteria for animal welfare, developed by an independent scientific advisory committee of worldrenowned leaders in the fields of animal science, animal behavior and animal ethics. American Humane’s certification process verifies many dimensions of animal welfare, with areas of evaluation including: excellent health and housing; positive social interactions within groups of animals, as well as between animals and handlers; safe and stimulating environments with concern for factors such as appropriate lighting, sound

levels, air quality and thermoregulation; and evidence of thorough preparation and protocols established to prevent and manage medical or operational emergencies. "Above the fog of the pandemic is a great future that shines brightly and at Dolphin Connection we are thrilled to embark upon the responsibility and honor of becoming American Humane Certified. The care and welfare of the marvelous dolphins in our care is our number one priority," said Travis Burke, executive director of The Dolphin Company North America. "The certification is a testament to the selfless dedication and hard work of our specialists, educators, vets, support team and our general manager as they strive to educate our guests on a daily basis and share the wonders of the marine world. Becoming American Humane Certified reflects the commitment we have, throughout our organization, to ensure the animals in our care are provided the best care and welfare possible. This certification is a vital cornerstone in supporting our strategic vision as a conservation-based aquarium dedicated to protecting species from extinction, educating the public, and exemplifying the highest levels of animal care and welfare.” Dolphin Connection, owned by The Dolphin Company, provides an opportunity for guests to have direct contact with marine mammals, providing awareness and encouraging positive change on behalf of the environment, oceans and marine life. Located at Hawks Cay Resort, in the heart of the Florida Keys, Dolphin Connection provides opportunities for resort and non-resort guests alike to live out their dreams by meeting dolphins in the water or on the dry docks. Through education and interaction, the facility can inspire a new generation to care about dolphins and marine mammal conservation. — Contributed

The scammer claimed he worked for a computer company sponsored by Best Buy. ttendees at the April 13 Marathon Chamber of Commerce After Hours event were treated to more than an evening of socializing. Hosted by the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, guests soon found themselves in the middle of a flash mob to the tune of Blanco Brown’s “The Git Up,” led by none other than Turtle Hospital mascot Tina the Turtle. The members of Dolphin Research Center’s animal family are no strangers to music throughout the course of their days. Even still, a 10-piece live band is an unusual treat. On April 13, the dolphins, sea lions and birds were treated to a performance by Tavernier-based Ukulele Joy. Led by Susan Anderson, the group aims to spread an appreciation for ukulele music throughout the Keys. With an attentive cetacean audience, the 10 musicians performed songs including “DayO,” “What Do You Do with a Drunken Sailor,” and “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing,” before moving on to DRC’s aviary, where the facility’s parrots were more than happy to pair the beat of the music with their own dance moves.
