UPDATED RESTORATION BLUEPRINT NEARS Sanctuary seeks to curb resource decline JIM McCARTHY

lorida Keys National Marine Sanctuary resources are under threat and facing continued deterioration. With threats of hurricanes and a stony coral tissue loss disease also came a boating boom during the COVID-19 pandemic that’s bringing more human interaction with the marine environment.

In a bid to counteract further resource decline, sanctuary officials are preparing to release an updated version of regulatory and management measures — through what’s known as the Restoration Blueprint — in June.

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council members received an update on the blueprint during a virtual meeting on April 19. Beth Dieveney, policy analyst for the sanctuary, said proposed boundaries and sanctuary-wide regulations are under review by agencies, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Offices of the National Marine Sanctuaries. Once that’s complete, a proposal will go out to the public for review and comment for a period of 90 days.

“We still do not have a definite date for release,” Dieveney said. “Our intent is to release it at a Sanctuary Advisory Council meeting.”

Sanctuary Superintendent Sarah Fangman said other agencies are reviewing the proposals relative to their own activities and regulations. She said the sanctuary is basically in a “wait-and-see” mode, but there’s hope that proposed rule changes will be released at the June 21 SAC meeting.

“They can raise questions or make suggestions.

What they do or do not choose to offer at this stage is totally out of our control,” Fangman said regarding the current review by other agencies. “That is why we are unable to be more explicit about timing. We have no idea what they may raise and what kind of consequences that could have to the timeline.”

Once updated regulations are released, sanctuary officials say they will host additional meetings, in-person and virtual — similar to a process that saw public input from the blueprint’s release in August 2019 to a public comment deadline in January 2020. There also will be opportunities to email input through regulations.gov.

In addition, Fangman said there will be some interactive tools on the sanctuary’s website to further understand what’s proposed.

Once released to the public, Fangman said nothing within the updated proposal will be changed during the feedback period.

“There’s no opportunity to slide something in while someone is out of town and not looking,” she said. “It is static and will stay exactly the same.”

Congress designated the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary on Nov. 16, 1990. Encompassing 3,800 square miles, the sanctuary protects open ocean, offshore reef tract and nearshore patch reefs, as well as seagrass meadows and fringing mangroves.

The sanctuary is also home to maritime heritage resources that encompass a broad historical period.

A 2011 condition report on the sanctuary detailed declining water quality, habitats and key species due to coastal development, overfishing, vessel groundings and marine debris, among other factors. Since that report, the Keys experienced Hurricane Irma and an increase in boaters. A recent study by Bonefish & Tarpon Trust analyzed 93 South Florida bonefish for an average of seven pharmaceuticals in their systems.

One fish had 17 pharmaceuticals.

It’s the first in-depth review of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary's regulations and marine zoning approach since they were established in 1997.

In the two decades since, the sanctuary said a lot has been learned about what management tools work and where improvements can be made.

With the release of the Restoration Blueprint in 2019 came a document with four alternatives. They proposed expanding several protected areas and revising restrictions for several others. Several new marine zones were also included in the proposals.

Concerns were relayed over some proposed regulations and boundaries following the blueprint’s release. In Key West, concerns were raised during continued on page 7

UPDATED RESTORATION BLUEPRINT NEARS an October 2019 forum regarding changes to popular recreational areas such as Snipe Point and Marvin Key. The sanctuary emphasized in an informational brochure that “NOAA is not proposing to limit access to backcountry shallows and sandbars where there is historical recreational use, such as at Snipe Point and Marvin Key.” Residential concerns were raised over proposed no-motor zones on the oceanside of Marathon, which runs from Vaca Cut to Tingler Island and is bisected by 10 channels.

In the Upper Keys, boaters expressed their displeasure during a forum over the idea of closing Carysfort and Sombrero reefs.

Fangman admitted in her presentation that the original proposal was not clear about what “limited entry” meant with regard to local access. She said the absence of that language led people to conclude that “we meant to ban local people. And that’s not what we want at all. That’s not our intention.”

In addition to regulations and boundaries, there’s the sanctuary’s non-regulatory management plan. A separate document that’s independent of the proposals relative to boundaries, zones and regulations, Fangman said, the management plan contains a suite of activities from research to stewardship. She noted, however, that the plan is dependent on resources — namely funding — to make it happen.

In her remarks to the SAC, Fangman expressed excitement over President Joe Biden’s budget proposal, which includes $86.7 million for the Office of Marine Sanctuaries. That’s up from the $61 million the office received during the current fiscal year.

“The president is recognizing that the sanctuary system has been underfunded for some time now and additional resources are needed,” she said. “It goes a long way to make up for the shortfall we’ve had for many years.”

Fangman said priorities within the management plan represent some comments they heard time and time again during public input sessions after the blueprint’s release.

They include enhancing law enforcement capabilities and tackling water quality issues.

Restoration, visitor use management, stewardship and engagement and management effectiveness were among the other priorities within the management plan.

Following comments from Fangman on the non-regulatory management plan, Capt.

Will Benson, SAC member, said the management plan reflects “some good, careful listening” from comments made in previous meetings with the public.

he April 20 meeting of the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners in Marathon saw what some expected to be a brief agenda point morph into a much larger conversation about property rights and land use.

The bulk of the meeting’s morning session was dominated by a discussion of various possible accessory uses for vacant shoreline parcels from which development rights have been removed. Such uses may include docking facilities; vehicle and trailer parking; water and electrical utilities; storage structures like sheds and garages; pools; gardens; homeowners’ parks; play structures and sitting areas; or accessory workshops, bedrooms or habitable spaces.

Under the current Land Development Code, most accessory structures may be placed on vacant lots sharing an entire property line with a principal structure such as the owner’s home (contiguous lots). However, docking facilities may also be placed on lots or parcels across the street from, or cornerto-corner with, residences (adjacent lots).

Discussion revolved around the use of vacant lots owned by residents living further down the street or on dry lots in nearby neighborhoods. The vacant lots would be used primarily for dockage, parking and storage.

“We don’t want to create situations under people’s noses who don’t own that property, but they’re next door and it detracts from their quality of life,” said Monroe County mayor David Rice. “I have far less concern about how far away a person’s home may be than what activity takes place on that property.”

Mayor Pro Tem Craig Cates suggested that accessory uses be allowed on vacant parcels within the neighborhood of a resident’s primary home, while allowing for requests for variances on a case-by-case basis.

Commissioner Holly Raschein similarly advocated a “relatively narrow” approach to initial accessory use permissions, to be broadened later as needed. “I don’t know that (a distance requirement) is unreasonable,” she said. “It is kind of a slippery slope, and I think we need to be diligent on what happens.”

The board eventually thanked and directed the county’s senior director of planning and environmental resources, Emily Schemper, to pursue a draft of changes to the Land Development Code allowing for docking facilities as well as active parking, electric and water utilities, and non-habitable storage spaces to be used for this purpose.

Under the proposed draft, the vacant lot must be located on the same island as the primary residence, clearing of habitat would not be permitted, and accessory use would only be allowed on land that is less environmentally sensitive than the lot of the primary residence.

All components of the proposed draft will be subject to further discussion and change as well as eventual public hearings.

In other news: • The board directed county attorney Bob Shillinger to pursue an update to the county’s Nonconsensual Private Towing Services Ordinance, increasing the rates paid to towing companies for services for the first time since 2006.

• The county was presented with a plaque to commemorate its Class 3 status in the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System. Under this status, residents of unincorporated Monroe County enjoy a 35% discount on flood insurance premiums.

• The Monroe County Fire Rescue celebrated a badge pinning and oath presentation for 27 new firefighter EMTs and firefighter paramedics.

• The board unanimously voted to observe the Juneteenth federal holiday.

HISTORIC FISHING BRIDGES FALLING DOWN SHARK CHANNEL BRIDGE CLOSED AFTER PARTIAL COLLAPSE

or 112 years, time, tide and travel have taken their toll on the 23 historic bridges that make up the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail. Once crucial to Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railway, but long closed to all vehicles, the bridges that exist alongside U.S. 1 have been used for decades by pedestrians, cyclists and fishermen.

They’re listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but they’re falling apart, quite literally.

A large chunk of the historic Shark Channel Bridge at MM 11 fell into the ocean on April 15, one day after officials had closed it and implored people to heed the barricades and stay away. Dean Richardson, a field inspector for the Florida Department of Transportation, put up the barricades and secured both ends of the bridge on April 14, after confirming reports of significant cracks in the concrete. He notified the U.S. Coast Guard, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office

and the Keys Weekly to publicize the safety alert.

The very next day, Facebook users posted photos of the bridge with a large segment of railing and bridge deck having fallen into the ocean below — damage that was not present the day before.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and its Office of Greenways and Trails manages the car-free Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail and its 23 historic bridges as part of a 2001 agreement between the state and Monroe County. The FDEP announced the closure of Shark Channel Bridge on its website Monday, April 18.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West began on April 14 issuing a broadcast notice to mariners regarding the Shark Channel Bridge, said USCG Lt. Christopher Papas, chief of the inspections division. “The notice will continue to be broadcast for the foreseeable future. Additionally, all pedestrian bridges running parallel to U.S. 1 in the area have signage warning boaters of potential falling debris. While these signs are not posted or maintained by the Coast Guard,

we encourage boaters to heed all warnings regarding hazards on the water,” Papas added.

The Keys Weekly has requested inspection reports for all 23 historic Keys bridges from the FDEP press office, but had not received them as of presstime Wednesday.

COSTLY REPAIRS In 2016, a DEP report estimated that restoring all 23 historic bridges would cost $184 million. The report said portions of deck overhangs threatened to collapse into the water, and that that already had happened to the Niles Channel Bridge in 2011.

Following the 2011 closure of Niles Channel Bridge, the FDEP in March 2014 announced the closure of four more historic fishing bridges for safety purposes: the OhioMissouri, Ohio-Bahia Honda, Missouri-Little Duck and Lower Sugarloaf.

The department noted that the bridges were part of the Florida East Coast Railway, built around the turn of the last century.

While not used for transportation, they are evaluated for safety concerns based on a 2001 memorandum between the state and Monroe County.

‘EVERYONE IS VAPING’ KEYS OFFICIALS AND PARENTS CONCERNED ABOUT HIGH TEEN USE

T

he national trend of teens vaping nicotine or marijuana has hit the Keys en masse, officials say. Monroe County children have some of the highest rates of vaping in the state. And many parents are concerned. Students as young as 10 have tried vaping, according to state statistics.

However, when Keys Weekly reached out to local parents and officials to discuss this issue, many refused to go on the record.

The high prevalence of Keys children concealing and vaping on the sly, even on school district property, is a very delicate topic.

The use of e-cigarettes is often called “vaping,” per CDC.gov. The website states that e-cigarettes may contain either nicotine or marijuana and “The use of e-cigarettes is unsafe for kids, teens, and young adults. …

(It) can harm adolescent brain development.”

Alison Kerr, public information officer for the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County, provided 2020 statistics proving the high local student vaping rate.

“In 2020, 9.8% of (Monroe County) youth used (tobacco) electronic vapors on school property,” she said. “The state’s average for this was 6.6%.”

These numbers are from the Florida Youth Tobacco Survey, which tracks tobacco use among public middle and high school students for the Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Tobacco Prevention and Control.

According to this data, Monroe County’s youth aged 11-17 scored consistently higher than the state average for the following

factors in the latest available data (2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020): youth who have ever tried electronic vaping, youth who currently use electronic vaping and youth who are exposed to secondhand electronic vapor smoke.

The 2020 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey stated that the proportion of Monroe County youth — as young as age 10 — who reported having vaped marijuana is 5.7 percent of middle schoolers and 17.5 percent of high schoolers.

A concerned mom of students who are attending schools in the Monroe County School District said — on condition of anonymity — that teens have told her, “Everybody vapes. You can tell when you go in the school bathrooms by the smell.”

“Parents are concerned,” she continued.

“And the school district is in a hard position.

They don’t know how to stop it. It’s an uphill battle.”

One of the reasons it’s an “uphill battle” for the schools is that students are able to hide their vaping very easily on school property. Amazon sells vaping paraphernalia, such as a container designed to look like a thick black Sharpie.

But Keys officials have been working on solutions for the teen vaping problem in the Keys. “Teen vaping is a deeply concerning problem for the school district,” said superintendent Theresa Axford. “We are using a three-pronged approach to combat it. First, we have installed vaping sensors in bathrooms that are used most frequently. With these sensors, we can determine how ex-

tensive vaping is and discover students who are using vapes. Next, we are giving consequences to students who are caught vaping.

Lastly, we are making education regarding the harmful effects of vaping as part of the consequence. Education of students on the hazards of vaping is the most important part of our work. Schools are also doing a public service announcement on the serious health threats that vaping causes and having a proactive stance on getting the word out that vaping is not good for anyone.”

Maureen Dunleavy, regional vice president of Monroe County’s Guidance/Care Center, said her organization is providing vaping prevention services at high schools and middle schools. “We are working with several local agencies in partnership, including the school district, Department of Health, Tobacco-free Florida and the Monroe County Coalition,” she said. “It is truly a group effort.”

Champions for Change, a drug and alcohol prevention club for students based out of Marathon High School, has gotten creative with educating parents about the issue.

The club conducted an educational event, called “Hidden in Plain Sight,” to teach where children are potentially hiding evidence of substance abuse. A typical teen bedroom was recreated at MHS, and parents were invited to look around the faux room display for clues.

Tina said her students explained to her the reason that vaping may be so popular among Keys youth. “They say they grew up in a culture where drinking, drugging, vaping and smoking is the social norm,” she said. “‘It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.’”

MARATHON SECURES FUNDS TO FIX COCO PLUM BRIDGE IMMEDIATELY

T

he City of Marathon recently secured just over $1 million from a federal fund to fix Coco Plum Bridge.

The federal funding means the city will be able to replace the bridge immediately, rather than make temporary fixes while waiting for other funding cycles from the state Department of Transportation.

“This is wonderful news,” said John Bartus, mayor of Marathon.

Coco Plum Bridge is currently one lane only; cars alternate passage over the span.

The repairs are made possible by the $350 billion American Rescue Plan of 2021 (ARPA). After distributions to the states, approximately $130 billion is divided among cities and counties.

Eligible uses of the funds include revenue replacement for government services affected by the COVID-19 health emergency such as pay for essential municipal employees and – as is the case for the bridge – investments in infrastructure.

“The good news is that we have already started the process,” said Carlos Solis, public works director for the city of Marathon, referencing the city’s work to determine the status of the bridge. “Our consultants are already under contract.”

The federal grant will pay for the replacement of the bridge superstructure, the decking; according to recent appraisals of the bridge, the abutments (supporting structure) of the bridges are in good condition.

Solis said designs for the new bridge “deck” should be available soon and the project to start soon after. The city hopes to complete the reconstruction by the end of 2022.

Coco Plum resident Jean Tarlton thanked the council and city staff for their efforts.

“This is exciting and a big relief,” she said. “I want to thank everyone who worked on this project and moving it forward by thinking outside the box.”

The city of Marathon will install temporary signals at the bridge to ease traffic congestion during the construction.

NO NUDITY, MORE CREATIVITY KEY WEST OFFICIALS EXPECT CHANGES TO FANTASY FEST

MARATHON, STATE OF FLORIDA APPROVE NEW PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OVERSIGHT AGREEMENT

T

he city of Marathon and the state of Florida have a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) approved by the Marathon City Council at the April 12 council meeting. It delineates the information the city is required to provide the state Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) to validate planning approvals and building permits issued in Marathon.

In late February, the state rescinded its 17-year agreement with the city. The new MOU agreement requires that more types of development approvals be rendered to DEO than the original MOU. For example: • The MOU requires state review of building permits and associated plans for new residential homes and commercial projects, in addition to the conditional use permits, development agreements, and other planning type approvals that the city already provides. Such additional review would include any renovation of an existing home that expands beyond its current footprint.

• The MOU also requires review of all development right transfers, variances and determinations of vested rights.

• In addition, the MOU will require the review of all projects that were denied by the city’s Planning Commission and then subsequently approved by the Marathon City Council.

• Through the MOU, the state will also oversee permits granting accessory uses – such as building a swimming pool or a tiki hut.

• Under Florida statutes and the Administrative Code, all development orders must be submitted to the state unless otherwise specified in an MOU agreement. The city, Monroe County and other municipalities in the Keys all have slightly different MOUs with the state, as they are all part of the Florida Keys Area of Critical Concern.

Under current regulations for Marathon, all permits require 30 days before construction can begin. If, however, a permit requires state approval, that can mean a wait time of 75 days before a permit becomes effective.

There may be further mutual revision to the MOU, to limit the number and types of permits sent to the state and to minimize the overall time for permit review.

Key West’s annual Fantasy Fest is about to change.

City leaders decided at a December 2021 Leadership Retreat they want to “transform the event into a positive, clean festival enjoyed by both residents and visitors.”

More recently, at the April 5 city commission meeting, officials authorized City Manager Patti McLauchlin to negotiate a new contract with the Tourist Development Association, which produces Fantasy Fest. (The TDA is the association that produces Fantasy Fest.

It is not to be confused with the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, or TDC, a county government agency that uses bed tax dollars collected by hotels and lodging establishments to promote Key West tourism and fund large-scale projects and improvements that will benefit tourism.)

The April 5 agenda item initially directed McLauchlin to negotiate a one-year contract with the TDA, but TDA president Steve Robbins and Key West Chamber of Commerce director Robert Goltz told the commission that events the size and scale of Fantasy Fest require multi-year contracts because producers negotiate multi-year agreements with sponsors.

The commission voted unanimously on April 5 to leave the contract length up to McLauchlin.

Goltz had suggested a three-year contract with two one-year renewal options, but no details have been finalized.

Festival Director Nadene Grossman Orr met on April 12 with McLauchlin, and said the city manager understands the TDA’s need for a multi-year contract.

“There will be some changes to Fantasy Fest and we’re amenable to that,” Grossman Orr told the Keys Weekly.

“There will definitely be a parade and a Masquerade March. Canceling the street fair on Duval Street is under consideration, but has not been officially voted on yet by the TDA board.”

The street fair was canceled last year due to COVID concerns, and many Duval Street business owners said they appreciated its absence, as it tends to keep people off the sidewalks and out of their businesses while they peruse the vendor booths in the street.

As for nudity, “Nudity is illegal. We always emphasize creative costuming.

As usual, it boils down to enforcement,” Grossman Orr said, adding that there’s “an unusual perception out there” that the TDA markets Fantasy Fest as a nudity-welcome event to people who participate in such events elsewhere.

“There is zero marketing to target that market,” Grossman Orr said. “All of our materials emphasize Fantasy Fest as a creative, costumed event. We market to next-generation festival goers, and to like-minded, affluent people who like music, art and costuming events.”

She said what the event really needs in order to bring about the desired transformation is participation.

“We challenge the city and the county and any individuals, businesses and government agencies with the means and the space to build floats and participate in the parade,” she said.

Donations from local organizations and individuals have enabled the Autism Society of the Keys to provide sensory boxes to all law enforcement, fire departments, schools and day care centers in the Keys. The boxes contain items that can comfort kids and adults on the autism spectrum and help people establish a rapport with them. CONTRIBUTED

W

hen Jill Campbell first started speaking about autism to Keys community groups, only one or two people in the audience knew someone with the spectrum disorder. Today, the spectrum disorder is familiar to nearly everyone in a Rotary club or business organization, said Campbell, who founded the Autism Society of the Keys (ASK) with her husband, Craig, when their 2½-year-old son was diagnosed 17 years ago.

“We knew nothing about autism, other than the movie, ‘Rain Man,’” Campbell recalls. “The diagnosis was devastating and the prognosis was no better. We were told our son would never speak, play with other children or be potty trained. The doctor told us to be prepared for institutionalization.”

When the shock wore off and reality set in, the Campbells, who live in Tavernier, turned to prayer, research — and other parents of autistic children. The support they found among those with shared experiences prompted them to form ASK as a local resource, sounding board and community education program.

Increased awareness, research and early intervention strategies have vastly improved outcomes for millions of kids with autism. The Campbells’ son was never institution-

alized. He drives a car, is in typical high school classes, speaks as much as anyone and has a girlfriend. “Despite some hiccups and a quirkiness about him, he’s leaps and bounds ahead of everything we were told to expect,” she said.

But there’s still work to be done, and the famously generous Florida Keys community has helped, she said.

Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg’s support has been unwavering and “amazing,” said Campbell, who is partners in ASK with Key West parents Hope and Key West police detective Matt Haley, whose daughter is autistic.

Brandenburg ensures that all his officers are equipped and trained to respond effectively and sensitively to situations involving people with autism. Sheriff Rick Ramsay also fully supports ASK and ensures training for all deputies, Campbell said.

ASK has been assembling and distributing “sensory boxes” to help officers, teachers, firefighters and others establish a rapport with autistic people and calm a situation.

The boxes contain headphones to muffle loud noises and dry-erase boards so non-verbal people can communicate their name, phone number or other information. There are also fidget and squishy toys for stress relief and weighted stuffed animals known to soothe anxiety

and other items.

“The boxes can be useful for all kids and for anyone with special needs, but each item is also hand picked by ASK as a tool for autistic children,” Campbell said.

Donations by local individuals, Rotary clubs, Home Depot and other local businesses, the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, the Key West Business Guild and others have funded 250 boxes in the Florida Keys for the police department, sheriff’s office, fire departments, EMTs, schools and day care centers. A recent Key West Business Guild lunch raised enough money to sponsor 32 boxes, Campbell said.

“This community and our law enforcement are amazing. KWPD has 60 or so boxes, and I’d love to give the sheriff’s office enough boxes to ensure there’s always one in a patrol car nearby, as spread out as those deputies have to be.”

The law enforcement training teaches officers to recognize behaviors of people on the autism spectrum, which often include unexpected, repetitive movements known as stimming. Officers also learn that many autistic kids bolt to escape stressful scenarios and very often seek out water.

“Drowning is the No. 1 cause of death for kids with autism, and our island chain is surrounded by water,” Campbell said, so it’s a huge relief to know local law enforcement officers understand that tendency.

“Stimming behaviors — repetitive rocking, flailing or hitting themselves or others — can often be mistaken by police as drug-induced behavior,” Hope Haley told the Keys Weekly last year, which is why the police training is so essential and appreciated by ASK members.

Campbell recalled a police incident years ago, when an officer encountered an autistic person who kept saying he was stimming.

“Just the recognition of that one word could have de-escalated a situation,” Campbell said. “Our officers are also trained to realize that strobe lights can cause panic or even seizures in some people with autism.”

Brandenburg last year created a system in which parents can register their address and alert police to the presence of an autistic child or special-needs person at an address.

“It’s entirely voluntary,” Brandenburg said, but for parents who want to participate, the KWPD can “flag” their address in its dispatch software and include notes about a child’s triggers. “That way, if a 911 call comes for that address, the responding officers will see specific notes about the child, and the police can perhaps approach without sirens and flashing lights.”

The sheriff’s office is now offering the same service, Campbell said.

Instead, he conquered the world with passion, courage and a humble approach to his craft, and we have the interview to prove it — right before Lambert’s arrival and performance in Key West on Thursday, April 28.

A.L.: “Pardon the cliche, but it’s a dream come true. I auditioned for ‘American Idol’ with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ Then the movie got people excited again and shifted the people we have in the audience at the shows. … When I get on stage with them, in the arenas, it’s such a rush. The music is so fun to sing.”

Touring with Queen took Lambert across the globe, injecting his stardom into diverse pockets of fans spanning many ages and genres. In 2012, he and Queen performed in Kyiv, Ukraine, resulting in an estimated 400,000 fans watching live from Ukraine’s main square — a moment that has become increasingly surreal for him, given today’s events in that city and country.

A.L.: “There’s definitely a soft spot in my heart for that show and that place. … We split the bill with Elton John, and I was so nervous.

But the audience was so warm … and to see what’s going on there now, and what else has happened there, even before now, but since that show, my heart goes out to anyone who’s affected by this senseless violence. … The world is a tricky place and nothing is permanent. I hope it ends very soon and I hope we can all keep raising awareness and humanitarian aid.”

Lambert is so much more than the front man for Queen, a runner-up in “American Idol” or a 2009 Grammy nominee for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for his song, “Whataya Want from Me.” He is self-aware in the moment, able to remain grounded on the grinding wave of stardom.

His approach to his craft remains humble, which he attributes to finding commercial success later in life.

A

s if a state championship in her weight class wasn’t enough to cap off her senior season for Marathon High School weightlifter Rylan Chapa, her most recent accomplishment will certainly put an exclamation point on it.

On April 6, Chapa was announced as one of the 24 members of the Florida High School Athletic Association’s (FHSAA) 28th annual Florida Dairy Farmers Academic All-State Team.

While Marathon High School has been well-represented on recent teams, with three athletes honored in the last two years, Chapa joins a group of only six MHS students ever to earn the lofty distinction.

The Academic All-State team is made up of 12 male and 12 female graduating seniors around the state and recognizes excellence in the classroom paired with elite athletic performance. Eligible students must carry a 3.5 GPA and must earn varsity letters in a minimum of two sports over the course of their junior and senior years.

This year, the program considered 51 male nominees and 69 female nominees.

Recipients will be recognized with a $1,700 scholarship at a banquet on Monday, June 6, where one male and one female athlete will also be crowned the Ronald N. Davis ScholarAthletes of the Year. As the most prestigious honor bestowed on a Florida high school student-athlete, the award carries an additional $4,600 in scholarship funds for each winner, for a total of $6,300.

Although Chapa was tipped off about her award a bit early through her involvement in the FHSAA Student Athletic Advisory Committee, she told Keys Weekly she was still surprised and thankful for the support of her coaches, family and community on her way to such a massive accomplishment.

“The coaches here are just awesome,” said Chapa. “They’re very flexible with you in knowing that you have priorities. The teachers, the coaches, my parents, they’re all always helpful. I always sit in my coach’s classroom during study hall, and he helps me with anything I have to do.

“The Kucks at Keys Strength have also done a lot for me, and my parents definitely help me as they let me wander around and do all the things I have to do,” she added. “And of course, I know that I wouldn’t have been able to do any of it without God. I definitely lean on him for a lot of things.”

Though Chapa is modest about her achievements, her resume blows away the minimum requirements for the award. She sports a 4.0 GPA, and though she describes weightlifting and volleyball as her “main sports,” through the years she also competed on the school’s soccer, tennis, track and field and softball teams – and lettered in all of them. Outside of the weight room, she is involved in diverse clubs including the Interact Club, the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.

“She won the award for the best athlete last year as a junior, and she lettered in five sports. That’s insane,” said Lance Martin, MHS athletic director. “She’s just well-rounded, and there’s nothing else you can say. She’s a great kid.”

n April 15, the Marathon High School softball team celebrated the next step in senior Kayla Sipe’s athletic career as she signed her letter of intent with Miami’s St. Thomas University.

As a member of the softball team since sixth grade, Sipe developed into a well-rounded student athlete, posting a 3.7 GPA while serving as a leadership pillar for younger players.

“Kayla, she’s the leader of the team,” said Lance Martin, head coach and MHS athletic director. “She organizes all the team activities, and she’s done a great job of holding this together.”

Off the field, Sipe is a Monroe County Youth Coalition leader, a Monroe County Sheriff’s Explorer and Cadet, the president of the National Art Society at MHS, a National Honor Society member, and a member of the Champions for Change, Students Against Destructive Decisions organization, SAVE the Promise Club and Student Government Association.

With her senior season nearly in the books, Sipe will turn her attention to the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice as she prepares to take the field for the Bobcats.

Lady Fins edge Coral Shores in girls softball

I

n a battle of Monroe County softball rivals, the MHS Lady Fins earned a hard-fought victory on April 18, posting a 12-11 win over the Coral Shores Hurricanes.

The Dolphins took full control of the game early on, jumping out to a 7-0 lead before a furious rally by the Hurricanes put Marathon in an 11-9 hole. The unexpected lead change was short-lived, however, as the Dolphins’ bats came alive just in time for a three-run rally in the game’s final inning, capped off by a game-winning two-run triple by senior Kayla Sipe. The team’s 12 total runs also featured the first out-of-the-park home run of the season, blasted by sophomore Kylie McDaniel.

“That one inning kind of spun out of control on us, and we had a couple of injuries,” said head coach Lance Martin. “But we regrouped and won it in the last inning. I’m proud of the way the girls came back there.”

The rally was a fitting way to end Senior Night for team leaders Sipe and Carla Bacallao. With only five players on the high school squad, the team relies heavily on contributions from middle school players and leaned on the experience and leadership of Sipe and Bacallao this season as younger players developed.

“Our two seniors did a great job with leadership and teaching these girls how to play softball,” said Martin.

“Many of these younger girls haven’t played in two or three years because of COVID. We found out that some of them hadn’t seen live pitching until they came out here. (The team has) come a long way in a short period of time. We’re starting over, and the seniors are leading the way back.”

he boys weightlifting season is coming to a close. The team was lucky enough to have 13 contestants attend the district meet this year, and all advanced to regionals. Two student-athletes, Alex Perdomo and Yuni DeLeon, qualified for the state meet and will compete on Saturday, April 23 in Tallahassee.

“It’s a great honor to place in the top 20 and travel to State to go headto-head with the best lifters across our very large state,” said Perdomo. Both he and DeLeon qualified and will be participating in the snatch competition at Port St. Joe High School in the panhandle.

“The boys’ season was a blur compared to the girls’ season,” said head coach Jessie Schubert. Several of the boys made large improvements this year, and all team members learned the snatch lift for the first time. “This year was a first for the snatch movement, and the boys earned a runnerup finish in the event at the district meet, which is both surprising and encouraging,” said Schubert. The team also earned runner-up in the traditional lifts category, which has only happened once in the previous six years.

Seniors Victor Segura and Charles Vaughn are the only lifters who will be leaving the young team after this season. Next year’s squad will be led by returning lifters Sean Hale, Thomas Eubanks, Malachi Hawkins, Aaron Dolton, Brody Vandervoort, Tanner Ross, Perdomo and DeLeon. “These guys have had years of experience training and competing, and the expectations will be high for this group in the coming seasons,” said Schubert. “If their work ethic continues throughout the offseason, there’s no reason that they can’t have a championship season next year.”

CLARE MERRYMAN is a senior at Marathon High School who dedicates the majority of her time to chasing her next article, working out with her teams, and swinging at a tennis ball. She’s known for making long to-do lists to keep her OCD in check.

BASEBALL

VARSITY The varsity baseball team currently holds a 10-9 record. Friday, April 22 will mark the last regular-season game of the year as the team takes on Westwood Christian at home at 5:30 p.m.

Graduating seniors Cole McDaniel, Delvin Solis, Ben Hiller and Corbin Neller will all be recognized for Senior Night before the first pitch. A win for the Fins will secure the top ranking in the South Florida Baseball Conference.

TENNIS “The team competed hard in the district playoffs in Kendall this past week,” said head coach Kevin Freeman.

Two Lady Fins advanced to the second round, as Lilian Guo and Malena Rocafort won their opening matchups, but the team’s run ended there.

Even with a sudden end to the season, Freeman spoke glowingly of his four graduating seniors. “Rylan Chapa is a natural athlete, so it was inevitable that she would become a tough opponent. She worked hard in every practice and played hard for every point. Lilian Guo was an asset to the team and had another great year, going undefeated in the Keys.

Additionally, she served as a terrific assistant coach as I learned the ropes as a first-year tennis coach. Clare Merryman definitely would win the most improved award. She really got into tennis her senior year and it showed as she finished off the season with a five-game win streak. Finally, Mikele Rocafort came out for the team in his senior year and settled right in as the number two player for the boys.

Throughout the season, he and Adrien Holdinga played very well together as doubles partners. They have impressive communication skills on the court, which consistently pushed them ahead of other pairs.”

SIMPLE STEPS TO HELP YOU EAT BETTER

sliced apple versus a slice of apple pie. If it were a healthy choice contest, fresh fruit would certainly win. But many of us may find it hard to resist that sweet treat. To help you eat better, try the following simple steps: In your home Remember the old adage “out of sight, out of mind.” It may well work for food. You may be less likely to eat something if you don’t see it, and vice versa. So make healthy foods convenient to consume. Here’s how: Keep foods such as fruits and vegetables in easy reach. Place perishable produce on a center refrigerator shelf, where it can be easily seen and picked up. You can apply the same idea to foods you store in cabinets.

Dress it up. Place healthy foods in an attractive bowl. They will be more tempting to eat.

Cut it up. Sliced apples or baby carrots are easy to grab and snack on.

Store food only in the kitchen. One study found people who stored more food throughout their homes, such as in an extra refrigerator, were more likely to be overweight or obese.

Before going shopping When you go grocery shopping, it’s the best time to bring healthy food into your home. Perhaps your most handy tool: a shopping list. Research shows that people who use one tend to eat better and weigh less. Try these grocery shopping tips: Map out your meals for the week. Deciding what you want to eat in advance can help you create a more concise list.

Use what you already have at home. Check your refrigerator, freezer and cabinets for ingredients to save money and time.

Try some new healthy recipes. Schedule easier meals for busy days. Reserve ones that take longer for days when you’ll have more time to cook.

Eat a healthy snack before shopping. It may help you stick to the list. Plus, it may prompt you to buy a greater amount of healthier fare. Consider this finding: In one study, people who snacked on an apple instead of a cookie before shopping bought more fruits and vegetables overall.

Eating out It can be a challenge to eat healthy when dining out. Restaurants may not always list calorie counts and other nutritional information on their menus. Try these strategies: Scan the menu for healthier items. Generally, low-fat or lowcalorie foods are grilled or steamed instead of fried.

Watch your portion size. To cut back on how much you eat, share an entrée with a friend. Or eat half and take home the rest for later.

Eat slowly. Your body will have more time to digest the food. You will feel full sooner and eat less overall.

Stay away from super-sized drinks. The sugar in soft drinks can add hundreds of unneeded calories to your meal. Water with lemon is a great way to stay hydrated without a bunch of added sugar.

MELT DOWN, BUT DON’T BURN OUT

Tips for exercise consistency and success

A

re you new to exercise, or has it been a while since you put on those exercise clothes? Do those clothes even fit any more?

Here are a few exercise tips to get you started on your weight loss journey: • Start out slowly with any exercise practice. Going too fast and trying to do too much too soon can lead to injuries and giving up.

• Create small, doable goals. It’s recommended that adults work up to 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. Read that again: work up to 150 minutes. It’s not all at once. It may sound good to exercise five days a week for 30 minutes each time, but is that reasonable or doable for you? Try three days a week for 15 to 20 minutes each. As your comfort grows, you can increase the length of time, the number of days or the intensity. You can even break up the exercise session throughout the day – 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at lunchtime and 10 minutes in the afternoon. It all adds up.

• Add reminders to your daily routine to help “push” you toward exercise. Leave your exercise clothes out so you have to see them when you get home after work. Maybe choose to go straight to the gym after work before heading home.

• Choose exercise that you really enjoy. It sounds simple, but sometimes we choose to do what others tell us we “should” do or “need” to do. Choose fun, enjoyable activities and you’ll have a greater chance of staying the course and accomplishing your goals.

• Reward yourself. We know you’re thinking of French fries, but not for this. Beyond using exercise for better sleep, improved health and weight loss, which are long term benefits, try for immediate perks such as a great cup of coffee or a manicure.

• Finally, think about your inspiration for exercising. Is it your family, friends, co-workers, overall health, weight loss (to fit into your pre-pandemic clothes?) or the Marathon Meltdown? Be clear about your intentions and go for it.

The school year is winding down and summer is just over the horizon.

From making flippered friends and exploring a private island to taking the stage for a theatrical production, there’s no shortage of activities in Marathon when school lets out. Here is information to help parents and kids come up with a summer plan. Please note that as most organizations are finalizing their camps, details are subject to change. DOLPHIN DAY CAMP What is it? Dolphin Day Camp is a fun-filled, active five-day program that introduces children ages 7-10 to the amazing world of dolphins. Campers meet DRC's resident dolphin family, getting to know and respect each dolphin as an individual. DRC puts them up close to observe the dolphins in action so they can learn more about each dolphin's unique behaviors and physical characteristics. With hands-on activities, group discussions, games, crafts and more, their days will prove that learning is fun.

MCT’S CHILDREN’S SUMMER THEATRE PROGRAM What is it? MCT’s Children’s Summer Theatre activities touch on theatre basics, including stage direction, terminology, auditioning, the production process and much more. Programming is designed for the beginner as

All activities are designed to develop imagination, concentration, character, professionalism and technique and to strengthen the student’s command of his or her body and voice. All participants will be placed in the cast or crew of the 2022 Children’s Summer Theatre production.

PIGEON KEY MARINE SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP What is it? Campers will learn reef fish identification, invertebrate collection, snorkel at Sombrero Reef and around Pigeon Key, participate in dissections, fish, play field games and relay races, and enjoy their own private island.

MIDDLE KEYS SAILING YOUTH CAMP What is it? Learn to harness the power of the wind and waves with the Middle Keys Sailing Youth Camp.

Where is it? Marathon Yacht Club, 33rd St. Gulf, Marathon When is it? Beginner, intermediate and advanced sessions run for one or two weeks between the end of May and end of July. On Mondays through Thursdays, ages 7-9 sail in the mornings and ages 10-16 sail in the afternoons. All ages sail together full days on Fridays. A Keys-wide regatta is scheduled for June 26.

What’s the age requirement?

Cost: Tuition is $160 per week. Financial assistance is available for those in need.

JUST FOR FUN CAMP What is it? Join St. Columba Episcopal Church for a day camp featuring field trips, arts and crafts and games.

ASK THE BIRD GEEK: IMPORTANT READER QUESTIONS ANSWERED WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO ATTRACT HUMMINGBIRDS IN THE KEYS? — Ethel’s Friend There’s only ever been one hummingbird species recorded in the Keys – the ruby-throated hummingbird. They are the one species that breeds regularly east of the Mississippi, but they don’t breed here. They winter here. You can see them any time from September to early May. (The ones here now will be heading north in the coming weeks.)

Oddly, though, they show absolutely no interest in MARK feeders while they’re here. WHY DO BIRDS SUDDENLY APPEAR? — Mr. Big Year Just like me, they long to be. Also, it may be that long trail of breadcrumbs that falls out of your pant leg wherever you go.

WHICH BIRDS ARE MONOGAMOUS? — Jane, the Golden Retriever Lady I don’t want to get all Bill Clinton about it, but it depends on how you define monogamous. Monogamy in the bird world is not the same as monogamy in the human world. Bird monogamy is closer to human serial monogamy. Think of the song “Summer Nights” from “Grease.” Though instead of “Summer fling / don’t mean a thing” it’s “Summer fling / means our genetic material is carried on to breed future generations and to share the workload of raising young in the immediate future…” (Is this the wrong time to point out that the line from that song, “Tell me more, tell me more / did she put up a fight?” has not aged well?) But basically, there is a lot of monogamy in the bird world, just of the serial sort.

That being said, some bird species do, in fact, mate for life. Swans are famous for it, and most species of swans do breed for life. Also bald eagles, black vultures, Atlantic puffins and scarlet macaws. But keep in mind that after, say, a failed breeding season, a lot of bird couples will break up and seek new partners. And there is a lot of extra pair copulation, or what the Eagles (the band, not the birds) refer to as “headin’ for the cheatin’ side of town.”

Also, lifetime monogamous species are usually only together in their breeding territories during the breeding season. The rest of the year they go their separate ways. And if a mate doesn’t return in time come spring, they will often tip their cap at another bird pretty quickly.

HOW FAR NORTH DO THE CUBAN FINCHES MIGRATE? — Anonymous at NAS Knock it off, Danette.

Have you ever seen baby hummingbirds? I have a strong memory of once seeing them, like a cluster of beaky bumblebees, when swimming in a pond in rural Northern California.

However, I had just emerged from a sweat lodge, and was wholly tripping, and never spotted them again despite living lots of places since then with regular hummingbird sightings.

Baby birds can basically be divided into two categories: precocial and altricial. Precocial chicks can walk or swim almost as soon as they hatch. They also tend to have a thick layer of downy feathers already. They are born toddlers. Precocial species tend to build their nests on the ground in open spaces, making them vulnerable to predators, so the ability to move and find shelter is crucial to the chicks’ survival.

Altricial species generally hatch their young in what we humans tend to think of as traditional nests: cups of sticks hidden away in the tree canopy. The chicks are born blind, featherless and helpless. Unless you’re good at climbing trees or figuring out where their nests are, or unless the bird parents decide to forgo stealth and build their nest in a manmade structure or a more exposed tree, you generally won’t see them until they are full grown and ready to fly. Other than plumage patterns, the young look much like adults. (In a lot of cases, especially with passerines, juveniles look very similar to females.)

There is a bit of a spectrum among the world’s 10,000 bird species between precocial and altricial, but all hummingbird species fall heavily into the altricial camp. They are born tiny and nearly bald with translucent bluish to pinkish skin and stubby, inelegant bills. They don’t look like the gleaming metallic micro-gods that they are until they are fully grown. So, sorry, it’s unlikely you saw a cluster of baby hummingbirds.

TL;DR: You were tripping balls.

HOW MUCH HOOPS IS TOO MUCH HOOPS?

T

here were four NBA playoff games on Easter Sunday. Some people would say that’s one, two, three or four games too many. Others, like me, would say that’s just about right. I didn’t watch every minute of every game. But I did watch a lot of each game.

In the first game, Atlanta at Miami, much to my pleasure, the Heat beat up on the Hawks to the tune of 115-95. Only at the very beginning was it close.

Then Duncan Robinson came in off the Heat bench and went to work on three-point shots, making 8 of 9 for a point total of 27 and was joined by five of his teammates beyond the arc: Jimmy Buffett made 1 of 2 three pointers and scored 21 points; P.J. Tucker, 4 of 4 and 16 points; Kyle Lowry, 2 of 4 and 10; Gabe Vincent, 2 of 7 and 8; and Max Strus, 1 of 5 and 9. The usually reliable Tyler Herro missed all four of his three-point attempts.

Miami’s largest margin was 32 points. Atlanta’s was 3.

Atlanta played again at 7:30 p.m. April 19 at Miami, the Heat winning again, 115-105. The two teams will play at 7 p.m. Friday and Sunday at Atlanta. The first team to win four games will advance to the next round.

The next game on Easter was Brooklyn at Boston and by that time I was dining out. With the score very close and the game near its conclusion, our hostess gave the call for dinner to be pleasantly served outdoors – and away from televisions. My host made the brilliant suggestion that we turn off the TV, but tape the end of the game for later viewing so as not to miss the ending.

We were busy eating a delicious meal and congratulating ourselves on being so smart when another guest, who had not been a part of our master plan, spoke up after checking his phone.

The host and I did watch the taped finish so we caught Jayson Tatum driving to the basket and scoring two points just as the game ended and the Celtics the 115-114 winners. It was still exciting even if we knew how the game would conclude.

Two more games were to be played Sunday evening. Milwaukee defeated Chicago, 93-86, and Phoenix beat New Orleans, 11699. And we were only halfway through day two of the tournament, which will take 16 games to determine a champion.

That’s a lot of basketball, though not enough for some of us.

HISTORY: THE MORE YOU LEARN, THE LESS YOU KNOW One island doesn’t contain the whole story

moved to the Florida Keys in 2001, so I could live on an island, sip rum and finish my great Florida novel. It seems like a lifetime ago.

When I was researching my first book, “Snorkeling Florida,” every dive captain had their own story about how this reef or that reef was named.

Curious about the facts and the real stories, I began doing a little research, which became the catalyst that forked the road down which I had been traveling. Except for last year’s “The Florida Keys Skunk Ape Files,” my world has been history, history, history ever BRAD since.

Because of these conduits, these links that connect one island, one community, and one family to another, it is difficult to tell a Key West, Marathon, Islamorada, Key Largo, or even Elliott Key story without telling a larger Florida Keys story.

As someone who spends an excessive amount of time researching, reading and learning about these islands, what becomes clear over and over again is that the more I learn, the less I know about the local history. The legendary pirate Black Caesar has become the latest example.

I knew nothing but the usual stories often told between sips of rum or other adult beverages 10 years ago. Black Caesar was an escaped slave who used Elliott Key as his pirate lair, and that is why Caesars Creek is still called Caesars Creek on modern charts. I have learned that the Black Caesar legend is bigger and more fantastic than I could have ever imagined. In fact, I have been working on a new book called “The Black Caesar Files” to make sense of all the stories about his remarkable life.

Like every other great Florida Keys story, a single island cannot contain the legend of Black Caesar. While his story is primarily focused on Elliott Key, it extends as far down the island chain as Key West and as far west as the barrier islands of Southwest Florida.

According to the article “Pirates and Treasure Trove of South Florida,” written by David O. True and published in Tequesta Number VI, 1946: “Caesar was an escaped negro slave, half Scotch from his father and a negro mother. Escaped and joined the pirates, and worked himself up. He moved to San Carlos Bay on the west coast when settlers began to settle along the east coast. Was finally whipped and captured and taken to Key West

by U.S. Sailors where he was burned to death tied to a tree, fire lit by the widow of the preacher from Baltimore whose eyes he had burned out and who engineered his capture on Sanibel Island.”

No matter what the author wrote, none of it is true. Even though it is entirely legend, the Black Caesar story is fascinating and deserves more attention, and it has also become one of my favorites. At this point, I might know more about the many lives of Black Caesar than just about anyone.

When I moved to the Florida Keys in 2001, I had never heard of him. Now, I consider myself an expert. Still, I am continually surprised by new historical facts revealed about him. Included in this is the fact that five Black Caesars have been identified so far, and who knows what tomorrow might reveal?

Thankfully, I moved to the Florida Keys in 2001, so I could live on an island and write.

I never thought I would be writing my own column for a newspaper or books about the local history, especially pirates, but then sometimes roads fork, and instead of going left, you go right. Fortunately, nothing goes better with a legendary pirate story than rum.

For more than 100 years, beloved English author Agatha Christie has filled us with thrills and chills. Over her successful career she wrote 75 novels, 28 collections, three poems, 16 plays, seven radio broadcasts and two autobiographies. She even lived a mystery of her own.

THE MYSTERY OF MRS. CHRISTIE

By Marie Benedict In 1926, Agatha Christie is a 36-yearold mystery writer on the cusp of becoming a household name. Things with her husband Archie are extremely tenuous, and against Agatha’s wishes, he announces that they are to spend the weekend apart. Late on this freezing December night, Agatha kisses her 7-year-old daughter Rosalind and gets behind the wheel of her fancy new car. The following day, the car is found abandoned by a gloomy lake with Agatha’s things in the back seat, but Agatha is nowhere to be found. The woman who would one day become the world’s most famous mystery writer becomes the focus of her very own 11-day mystery. Only a few months after releasing her latest novel, Agatha has disappeared. She returns with absolutely no memory of the time that has just passed, wondering why everyone is in such a panic. “The Mystery of Mrs. Christie” is narrated in alternate timelines by Agatha before her disappearance, and her husband Archie’s view after she goes missing.

Ingenious author Marie Benedict reimagines what might have happened during this puzzling real-life unsolved mystery with gripping and exquisite detail.

THE CHRISTIE AFFAIR

By Nina de Gramont On Dec. 3, 1926, famed mystery writer Agatha Christie is told by her husband Archie that he is in love with another woman. The couple quarrels terribly after he makes this devastating announcement and leaves to spend the weekend with his mistress. Later that evening, Agatha, devastated by the news, packs a few things and leaves their estate in her precious sports car. She is not seen or heard from for 11 days. During this time, Archie appears shocked while the household staff is thoroughly investigated. His girlfriend quietly leaves town. The police begin a massive search for the famed author.

Was this news story fodder for her latest book release? A public relations scandal to hold onto a crumbling marriage? The Christie Affair is cleverly narrated by Nan O’Dea, Archie’s mistress. Nan has her own agenda and questionable past. When Nan’s backstory crosses paths with the present search party, she can no longer deny her unexpected role in Christie’s life.

This fictionalized account of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries is positively mesmerizing. A novel not unlike one of Agatha’s own creations.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

By Agatha Christie A fully booked luxurious train, with a murderer among the passegers, is traveling from Istanbul to London. Forced to a standstill due to the snowy weather, it is up to private detective Hercule Poirot, a retired Belgian police officer, to solve the case before panic ensues. The deceased is an American tycoon named Ratchett, found dead in his compartment after he was stabbed 12 times. His door is suspiciously locked from the inside. Only the day before, this curious character had offered Poirot a large sum of money to protect him, which the detective declined.

It turns out that Ratchett was a dangerous gangster with a criminal history. As is his nature, Poirot has already quietly assessed each and every person he met.

He meets with the conductor in the dining car to investigate each clue and every passenger to try to solve the murder on the famous Orient Express. Published in 1934, this classic crime whodunit was one of Agatha Christie’s greatest, later becoming an award-winning film.

FAN TIP: The phenomenal movie “Death on the Nile,” originally filmed in 1978, was recently remade with an all-star cast and is now streaming on HBO Max and Hulu.

ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY Marathon is just freakin’ awesome

T

his past weekend was further reinforcement about just how special a place our Florida Keys home really is. We all know and love the natural wonders that surround us — the beautiful waters, sunny blue skies, a living coral reef and some amazing flora and fauna. One additional aspect of Keys life that deserves our attention is how awesome the people in our community are.

Let’s start with last Friday night. My Take Stock in Children student, Dakota Mertyris, had a nice part in the musical “Newsies” — so we went to cheer him on. The Marathon Middle and High School Drama Club staged this production and put in nearly nine months of rehearsal to pull off an incredible show full of song and dance. More than 30 MMHS students were in the cast, along with more than 20 crew members, also mostly students. There were contributions from many community members, and all those months of preparation came to fruition as the lights went down in the auditorium.

The production was absolutely amazing. It’s hard to imagine all the work that went into getting the cast to sing all the songs, some of them with intricate harmonies — all while they were dancing, cartwheeling, and even tap dancing. Choreographer Cami Holdinga started dance lessons with the cast members last August, and the result was spellbinding. Even when the school district’s I.T. department shut down all school computers countywide during Friday night’s show, the actors and singers carried on, performing complicated song and dance numbers flawlessly without any musical accompaniment.

My only regret is that “Newsies” was only performed for two nights.

I wish more people could have seen these students shine under the spotlight. It was a short run, but a magnificent one, indeed.

The next morning, the Rotary Club of Marathon hosted our traditional Easter Egg Hunt for the kiddos at Rotary Field of Dreams Park. Event chair Leigha Fox was finally able to empty her closet of the 4,000 eggs she’s held on to since the pandemic canceled the last two hunts. A group of Rotarians and local volunteers (thank you Brayden Brabenec, Bryson Seligson and Synthia Robles) assembled at 9 a.m. and took about an hour to stage the party and hide the eggs. It then took the kids about 10 minutes to pick the park clean.

The Easter Bunny was on hand to pose for photos and complete the kids’ holiday experience — thanks, Cara! It

was a great sendoff event for Rotary Park, as it is going to be completely rebuilt! The Easter com Bunny’s work was not done, however, as he made another appearance at the Adult Easter Egg Hunt at Havana Jack’s (thanks, Joaquin). Presents in Paradise put on this fun event at Havana Jack’s, and so many people came out to buy Easter Eggs that all had some cool prizes hidden inside. Presents got a nice bunch of donations from some of our fantastic local business owners, and the staff at Havana Jack’s and Glunz Ocean Beach Resort took such good care of us — their support for Presents In Paradise has helped so many local families during the holiday season.

t may have taken hours to pack and hide the 4,000 eggs hidden around Rotary Park for the Marathon Rotary Club’s annual Easter egg hunt on April 17. But for the dozens of children in attendance, it took mere minutes to clear every nook and cranny.

With the Easter Bunny on hand to help hide eggs, greet children and pose for pictures, the hunt served as a happy farewell to the old Rotary Park, closed the next day for demolition and an eventual complete rebuild.

Community Park Fitness Court to hold grand opening The City of Marathon will host a grand opening of its Fitness Court on Friday, April 22 at 11 a.m. at the Marathon Community Park. The opening will feature demonstrations of the court’s many workout stations and welcoming remarks from local dignitaries.

The court was constructed as part of the National Fitness Campaign, established in 1979. For more than 40 years, the campaign has been dedicated to helping communities fund and build a free outdoor Fitness Court within a 10-minute bike ride of every American.

The Rotary Club of Marathon recently completed donations to local and international causes totaling $42,000. Among the recipients were AHEC, which received $10,000 for its dental program; Crane Point Hammock, which received $7,500 for classroom and summer camp scholarships; the Marathon Rec Center, which received $4,500 for new equipment plus a grant (applied for) that would provide another $2,500; Pigeon Key Foundation, which will receive $5,000 a year for the next three years; and the Autism Society of the Keys, which received a $5,000 donation.

Additionally, the Rotary Club of Marathon has donated $10,000 to relief efforts in Ukraine through the Lviv International Rotary Club in Lviv. And with scholarship season coming up, the Rotary Club will donate $45,000 to local students, including one full-ride scholarship through Take Stock in Children.

Rotary President Duane Webster, along with his board of directors, approved these donations as part of the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”

ay 1 marks the opening of hogfish and grouper fishing season here in the Florida Keys. For the last two years, it’s also been the date of the Jeff Leonia Reel & Steel Classic, a fishing tournament dedicated to a local captain lost too soon.

Leonia grew up on Marco Island in Naples and spent his weekends, summers and holidays in the Keys. In our waters, he found his home, his friends and his community. As an adult, he chose to make the Keys his permanent home, moving to Islamorada to dive, spearfish, captain and live a life immersed in the sea.

On Nov. 18, 2019, Leonia passed away suddenly in a car accident. He was just 24. Since then, the Keys community that welcomed him has grieved for him, remembered him and honored him by “living like Jeff.” To those who knew Leonia best, that phrase means living each day to the fullest, helping everyone you can and enjoying every possible moment on our beautiful waters.

In 2020, Leonia’s good friend and fellow captain Tony Young created a fishing tournament to make good on his mission to embody his fallen friend’s spirit. The annual event falls on hogfish and grouper opening day because it was always one of Leonia’s favorites.

“Grouper/hogfish opener is a busy day on the water,” Young said. “Jeff loved this day. Everyone looks forward to hunting these fish on the season opening day.

My best advice is to get out early and set up where you want to fish or dive.”

You can fish by scuba, freediving or fishing rod/reel.

There are different categories of prizes for each, as there are for men vs. women and for each fish type. Prizes are awarded for 1st through 3rd. Registration is $200.
